Timewalking dungeons in World of Warcraft and roulettes in Final Fantasy XIV are a wonderful way to keep old content relevant. WoW Dragonflight is bringing? back the system, and there are some significant rewards attached to it this time around. Here's how to find Timewalking dungeons, and t??he weekly quest associates with them.

What are Timewalking dungeons?

Simply put, Timewalking is a mode that allows players to take on past dungeons, while "scaling down" players (power-wise) to force them t?o actually deal with more dungeon mechanics, instead of bypassing them with higher end gear.

It kicked off during the Warlords of Draenor expansion (which fit with the whole time t??ra?veling theme), and it stuck.

How to earn Timewalking/Timewarped badges in WoW Dragonflight

Badges can be earned by completing Timewalking dungeons (10), as well as de??feating indiv?idual bosses (five each). You'll get a bonus of 10 badges for doing a random dungeon.

Where to find World of Warcraft's Timewalking badge vendors

Legion - Dalaran (Aridormi, 68.5, 48.6)

Draenor - Ashran (Kronnus [Horde],? 43.5, 55.2 | Tempra [Alliance] 37.5, 72)

Pandaria - Timeless Isle (Mistweaver Xia, 43, 55)

Cataclysm - Orgrimmar (Kiatke [Hord?e] 52.2, 41.5) | Stormwind (Kiatke [Alliance], 75.2, 19.5)

Wrath - Crystalsong Forest (Auzin, 50.2, 45.3)

Burning Crusade - Shattrath (Cupri, 54.5, 39)

Where to find Timewalking dungeons, and the weekly Savage Path Through Time questline

To queue up for Timewalking dungeons in Dragonflight, open the group finder menu ("I" by default), then go to ??the regular d??ungeon finder tab, and select "random Timewalking dungeon."

Before you do anything, make sure you pick up the "A Savage Path Through Time" quest in Valdrakken, which is a weekly activity (complete 5/5 Timewalking dungeons). The NPC you'll want to speak to is Kazra (coordinates 49, 60), the Drakonid that's lifting wei??ghts in the square near the fountain. You'll get a Cache of Vault Treasures out of it, amid the regular rewards.

How to get the Cache of Vault Treasures in WoW Dragonflight

Com?pleting the weekly quest will net you a cache of vault treasures, which "rewards a piece of equipment for your loot specialization."

Translation: you'??ll get a piece of gear from the Vault of the Incarnates raid (no tiered gear).

Check out all of our updated Dragonflight coverage

We have a ton of current Dragonflight (2024) coverage available as we wait for the next expansionThere's our updated Grand Hunts guideinfo on Plunderstorm, and a breakdown of the concluded Hearthstone event.

Suffice it to say, World of Warcraft is only getting more hype leading into The War Within, which should hopefully give us some great lore beats that potentially undo some of the recent contentious narrative dips and dives. The world of Warcraft continues ever on, and now, one of its founding fathers, Chris Metzen, is ??back at the helm.

Given that it feels like thousands of games are released every single month on platforms like Steam and mobile devices, things can slip by, to say the least.

One such game I missed was Corn Kidz 64: an homage to Nintendo's influential era of '90s gaming. It came out on Steam on October 17, 2023, and has developed a cult following of sorts, with overwhelmingly positive reviews to boot. So what's new with Corn Kidz? Well, it's getting a Switch port on April 19, at the same? price as the Steam version: $6.99.

Corn Kidz 64 is coming to Switch, with N64 controller support

This news comes from the Diplodocus Games social account, which notes that the Switch version is nearly here, and will still offer an "authentic Nintendo 64 experience." The best part? It's been confirmed that the po?rt will offer N64 controller support, by way of a "unique control scheme" that will be available at launch. You can find the full Switch eShop listing fo??r Corn ??Kidz 64 here.

As a mascot platformer player at heart, I will always be there for any modern mascot romp, from Kao the Kangaroo to Penny's Big Breakaway. And I know what you're thinking: yes, I was technically there for Balan Wonderworld (which I still call Balan Wonderland): I just didn't enjoy it. Totally counts!

[Thanks Jeff!]

Hogwarts Legacy adds more combat challenges as you pick up more?? spells, and at some point, it kind of hits critical mass. One such challenge is "flip a Troll's club," which is incredibly vague. Here's how to do it and how to complete the similarly cryptic "hit a Troll with its own boulder" challenge.

How do you flip a Troll's club in Hogwarts Legacy?

To flip a Troll's club, you must use the quite literal Flipendo spell. You'll acquire Flipendo through Professor Garlick's second assignment after you complete the initial tut??orial for the herbolog?y class in the main story. There are, however, timing considerations.

Battling a Troll in Hogwarts Legacy
Screenshot by Destructoid

To actually get the club to flip into the Troll's face, you'll need to wait until it slams its club on the ground. Dodge (instead of using Protego), and cast ??Flipendo when the club is on the ground. It'll "flip" back up and smack the Troll in its face. Challenge completed!

After you've acquainted y?ourself with the timing, it's a?????????????????????????? helpful way to take down Trolls quickly for resources.

How to hit a Troll with its own boulder

The other Troll-centric challenge doesn't need a spell at all. Instead, you'll be throwing a boulder (an object the Troll creates itself) with the Ancient Magic Throw when the timing is right. Run far away from the Troll ?to coax out its boulder attack. Then, when it raises the boulder (which the game will telegraph as a Protego block), you'll need to throw it back at them like you would any barrel or crate.

To ensure you have time to actually pick the boulder up before it hits the ground and becomes non-interactable, just tap the Triangle (Y on Xbox, Q for PC, and X for Nintendo Swi?tch) button to cast a short Protego block.

Where to find Trolls in Hogwarts Legacy

In Hogwarts Legacy, you can find Trolls at Troll Lairs and the Battle Arena. Battle Arena frequently showcases Troll battles, which can be found in the North Hogwarts Region, North Ford ?Bog, and Feldcroft Region. I found this creature just after starting the first round in the Feldcroft R??egion Battle Arena:

Troll Lair locations

If you don't want to go through the hassle of fighting en??emy waves, travel to Troll Lairs. They'll be marked with a cave-like symbol in the following areas:

  • Feldcroft Region
  • Forbidden Forest
  • Manor Cape
  • Poidsear Coast

Not all symbols will fe??ature a Troll since Mongrel and Inferi share the same i?cons. So, make sure it is labeled as "Troll Lair." You can use what you've learned with the Troll's club and boulder to eliminate them instantly.

Where to find Troll Bogeys

Troll Bogeys are a mucus substance used in the Invisibility Potion recipe. You can get them by killing Trolls or buying them from J Pippin's Potions. You'll likely acquire a ton of them during the challenges mentioned above. However, the shop in Hogsmeade can provide them instantly for 100 gold each.

Purchasing Troll Bogeys in Hogwarts Legacy

The Invisibility Potion requires Troll Bogeys, Leaping Toadstool Caps, and Knotgrass Sprig. While the Leaping Toadstool Caps can be found in forested areas, the Knotgrass Sprig seeds can be purchased at The Magic Neep for 350 gold. With all the ingredients collected, go to the Room of Requirement and sta??rt brewing the Invisibility Potion at the Potions Station.

The world map in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is fascinating because the game leaves a good chunk of it out for the critical path. It's one of the reasons why people have gravitated toward this long-awaited Breath of the Wild follow-up, and why folks are still talking about it weeks after laun??ch. Here's where to fi??nd the Highland Stable, which may or may not be a non-critical location that's, shall we say...a trek.

Where to find the Highland Stable

The Highland Stable is south of Central Hyrule, deep into the Faron region, near the edge of the map, in the Fural Plain. The exact location of the Highland Stable can be found at coordinates 0523, -3431, 0047 and on the above map.

How to get to the Highland Stable

To get to Highland stable, your best bet is through Lookout Landing, where you can catapult yourself south and glide down to the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower. Shoot out of that tower and continue your journey south. Unlike another stable in Faron, this one is easy to see at a glance from the sky. The Utsushok Shrine is just a jog away to the northeast, up on a hill.

As an aside, we recommend that you don't try and visit fringe locations really early into the game unless you have the Vow of Tulin. It'll mak??e finding these far-off spots that much easier.

Quests involving Highland Stable (TotK)

Highland Stable is a central location for a number of ??quests. Sin?ce you're in the area, you may want to consider these before moving on.

Beedle at Highland Stable (TotK)

Here are all the items Bee?dle sells at the Highland Stable in Tot??K:

  • Arrow (singular) - (20 stock, 6 rupees each)
  • Arrows (5-pack) - (1 stock, 30 rupees each)
  • Ice fruit - (3 stock, 10 rupees each)
  • Sunset firefly - (3 stock, 10 rupees each)
  • Hearty lizard - (1 stock, 100 rupees)
  • Octo balloon - (5 stock, 20 rupees each)

There are a few!

So Tactics Ogre: Reborn is out on multiple platforms, including Switch. Thankfully, some folks (like solwhitehorn on Reddit) have tinkered around with it, and found that it has mouse and k??eyboard support: yep, on the Nintendo Switch!

T??hat got me thinking: it would be great to ha??ve a list!

Here are all of the Nintendo Switch games with mouse and keyboard support

  • Tactics Ogre: Reborn
  • Doom 1 and 2
  • FUZE4
  • Hypnospace Outlaw
  • Factorio
  • Monster Hunter Rise (text input only)
  • Game Builder Garage
  • Quake
  • Undertale
  • Wargroove
  • The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker (keyboard only)

Mouse and keyboard support has been a thing for generations of consoles now, and the most notable games I can think of that helped usher it into the mainstream spotlight were Phantasy Star Online for Xbox, and Shadowrun 2007 (the shooter). The latter was a really interesting experiment that pitted PC and Xbox players t?ogether via cross-play, ages before it became a ma??jor thing in the console market.

In any case, one of my favorite ??things about the Switch is the ability to swap to different control schemes. The Wii in particular was very inflexible, with many games forcing a singular type of control; and while the Wii U was better with a lot of titles allowing for Pro Controller support, the Switch has improved things even further.

I haven't been this inspired to bust out a keyboard on a console (beyond Final Fantasy XIV chat) since the Dreamcast era!

How to use keyboard and mouse on the Nintendo Switch

To utilize a keyboard and mouse on the Nintendo Switch, all you need to do is physically connect it to the Switch dock via USB. Note that Bluetooth mice and keyboards will have? detection issues on said dock: so you may want to get a converter or small USB hub if you? lack the ability to easily plug your devices in.

Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS didn't get the recognition it deserved in 2005. It sits there pa?tiently on my shelf for the next person to ask about it, but in the me?antime, I've been waiting for a new true Peach-centric follow-up.

It's finally here in the form of Princess Peach: Showtime, and this one is ??a lot less risky? but far more palatable as a result.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Princess Peach: Showtime (Switch)
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo

Released: March 22, 2024
MSRP: $59.99

Like any good Mario-adjacent game, it takes roughly five minutes (if that!) for Princess Peach: Showtime to get started. There is practically no nonsense or filler here: Peach is attending a play at a massive theater, and her plans are dashed by sorceress Grape and the Sour Bunch. It's up to Peach to enter an array of themed levels, and don outfits like Swordfighter, Detective, and Cowgirl to save the day with the hel??p of Stella: a cute star-li??ke creature.

The story serves its purpose and is very much playing out in the background. In fact, the entire framework of Showtime is extremely Kirby-like. If you rush through and don't attempt to get all of the collectibles in each stage, you can complete it in about five hours. It's breezy in that way, mostly to its advantage, a??s stages don't overstay their welcome and frequently oscillate in length. Some levels might be a short but quick high-octane race, and others are more traditional platforming/beat 'em-up hybrids.

This focus on variability is all due to the costume system. When Peach enters each stage, she dons a specific outfit for the occasion, which completely changes the way you appr??oach your path to the goal. Nintendo can't resist crafting most of them as action romps, but a few stray far off the beaten path into microgame territory.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Again, there's a lot of variance involved, directly tied to the format of the? stage itself and the actual out?fit you're using. Some folks might be down on the lower-energy bake-offs with the chef costume (technically referred to as Patissiere Peach), or the slow nature of the Detective levels, which task you with "accusing/investigating" certain objects or persons (at the cost of health for wrong guesses). Some of you out there might rave about them.

Other concepts are more stealth-oriented like Ninja Peach's gimmick, or entirely action-oriented, like the Swordfighter and Mighty (read: sci-fi) areas. Interestingly enough, this subversive approach to traditional platforming even extends to at least one boss, who is not foiled as a result of a direct battle. While not everything in Showtime hit as well as it could have, I was co??nstantly guessing what would happen next, or how the team would even approach frequently-used outfit gimmicks in a different light. It's a variety show in video game form.

It helps that Nintendo keeps things simple. Peach is mostly controlled via two buttons: action and jump. These are practically universal barring?? a few outfits, and help keep the focus on the action and platforming itself without having to sift through menus cons??tantly. Actually, tutorials are cleverly dispensed through an optional button press prompt: ensuring that said text isn't dominating the screen every time you encounter a new outfit.

One thing I'd be remiss not to mention is the game's entire presentation: folks, it is charming. Little horses are held up by string like a puppet show, enemies flourish and egg you on as a hammy theater villain would, and environments weave in and out of the background like tiny little stagehands are manipulating them. While screenshots will show off just how vibrant the game is, you need to see it in motion to appreciate the craft involved here. We need more games that look like Tearaway, Black Knight Sword, and Puppeteer: they are too far between.

Screenshot by Destructoid

There are a ton of secrets to discover in each stage, typically hidden behind a fake wall or through the game's spotlight/taunt button, which activate?s conspicuous environmental objects and transports Pea??ch to a bonus zone. After you've finished the core story mode and cleaned up the theater, you're able to jump back into every stage and go for every collectible, with a few secrets in tow that I won't spoil here. If you're a completionist, you'll have a lot to do before moving on from this one.

I was pleasantly surprised by Princess Peach: Showtime, and the aforementioned unpredictability is a huge reason why it will likely remain in my permanent rotation of Mario games going forward. I'd love to see ?Nintendo give more m?ascots a showcase like this, with a similar go-for-broke variety format. Keep 'em coming!

When I saw that Final Fantasy 7 Remake came out in 2020, I had to do a triple-take. Really? It was out on PS4, four years ago? No way!

Alas, time makes fools of us all, and the second part of that remake, not-confusingly-at-all-named Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is here. If you were sorta-kinda on the fence about this whole thing after the fi??rst entry, you'd?? probably love this one.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (PS5)
Developer: Square Enix Creative Business Unit I
Publisher: Square Enix
Released: February 29, 2024
MSRP: $69.99

Rebirth takes us out of the gloomy city of Midgar and out into the broader world. Well, it's more like a collection of massive regions spanning interconnected sandboxes making up that world, to be precise, as this is a different beast entirely. Square?? Enix has collectively add?ressed numerous aspects of the original, both in and out of combat. We'll get to that, but suffice it to say that things get rolling very quickly (as is the case with most middle entries of a trilogy).

For a "part two" of a massive JRPG collection, it's fantastically paced. We're in the thick of it immediately, with Cloud revealing a rather large tale from his past, tying in the looming threat of big bad Sepiroth, and re-familiarizing us with the current party. I was "in" right away, far sooner than Remake grabbed me. That might be all you need to hear. If so, that's great! For the rest of you, let's talk about why Rebirth is so successful at what it does.

Rebirth, somehow, is equally interested in letting you run wild with weird sidequests (including a fully-fledged card game with booster packs, a worldwide ranking, and even a celebratory cruise event) and doling out mountains of lore. It's a perfect combo for folks who are extremely into FF7 or might even be jumping straight into Rebirth after watching a YouTube summary of Remake.

The FF7 Rebirth party as they ride across the open world on Chocobos.
Screenshot by Destructoid

I appreciate all of the extra context we get from Rebirth outside of the confines of Midgar. The world seems so much bigger now, and lore nuts are going to go wild for some of the extra details sprinkled in. The mad lads and ladies of Square Enix also added in friendship bonds, which are boosted by talking wit??h teammates (as well as saying the right things), and impact a few light s??toryline events, as well as combat synergy. It does a fantastic job of letting the entire party come alive, not just your personal favorites. That shines through with nearly every voiceover performance.

There are a ton of unique moments in Rebirth that really pop, with scenes like Barret and Red XIII going through the Mithril Mines together and bantering stealing the spotlight as a favorite. Nearly every chapter has sequences that play out between characters you didn't really get to see interact in the original PS1 version, and the earlier inclusion of Yuffie fits so brilliantly that you'd be forgiven if you thought that's how it always worked. As with any good remake, many things are played straight, but there's a he??althy mix of original, altered ideas too. While I'm going to refrain from making any comments on the meta-story that was introduced in Remake, there are a ton of surprises to discover and talk about in the years to come.

I really need to clarify that this isn't a fully open-world game, but I bought into that fairly quickly. As chapters progress, you'll gain access to new regions, of which there are six (amid other smaller zones to explore). Those are six legit sandboxes to roam around in, with land-based vehicles or Chocobos, primed with sidequests and other secrets. It's not quite as grand as getting an airship and going hog-wild around the globe, but there's plenty packed into Rebirth to keep you going past the 100-??hour mark??: especially if you poke around all of the minigames on offer.

Rufus, as he appears in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Screenshot by Destructoid

Some of you might be reading this review just to see if they half-assed the Gold Saucer: Final Fantasy 7's famous Chuck E. Cheese/casino. Nope! In fact, it's expanded compared to the original rendition and is a fully-fledged hub with t?ons of goodies to unlock and earn long-term. I found myself spending multiple hours in it just roaming around aimlessly, and I still have plenty left to do. And, sp?eaking of random time-filling minigames, we have got to talk about Queen's Blood specifically.

Even as a big tabletop fan, I resisted the siren's song of this in-universe card game for several chapters before I gave in. Once I started, I couldn't stop. With simple Othello-like placement rules, Queen's Blood is very easy to learn, but there's a considerable amount of depth to it. As you progress you'll earn more cards, which in turn can introduce new keywords, just like a future set release in Magic: The Gathering. I went from ?ignoring Queen's Blood NPC icons to actively seeking them out, expanding my card collection all?? the while.

Another thing that I'd be remiss to leave out of this assessment is the soundtrack. It sounds hyperbolic, but FF7 Rebirth has one of the best Final Fantasy scores of all time. I mean there are a lot of them at this point, and I've heard them all, but the combination of new music plus some masterful reworks of a handful of classic tracks really pu??ts this near the top for me. Again, I'd love to just spoil a few here and talk about them at length, but you'll see a few of the stando??uts for yourself either in-game or on YouTube. People will be sharing them!

Combat, on the other hand, is not going to radically sway folks who didn't dig it in the original. It's still very much in line with the core system Square Enix created for Remake, and it's likely to continue on throughout the trilogy. Dodging and blocking are still a major focus, as are ability and [materia-based] magic commands, and mashing an attack button to gain Active Time Battle (ATB) gauges to actually fire off said bombs. It is a little flashier though, with an enhanced focus on perfect-timing parrying, as well as synergis??tic team attacks.

Screenshot by Destructoid

How engaging you'll find combat is severely tied to the complexity of the encounter, which ebbs and flows throughout the game. Bosses tend to be more involved, asking players to mix up their tactics (beyond just exploiting weaknesses) by targeting vulnerable points and reacting quickly to big attacks. The "stagger" system returns (in which enemies are momentarily open to harder hits a?fter depleting their stamina meter), which can feel both rote and extremely exciting in the same encounter.

Like Final Fantasy XIV, the more flashy a fight is, the more fun you'll have. Many bosses have several phases, complete with silly transition seq?uences, a booming score, and constant strategic mixups. There are enough of these peppered into the game (including new ones) to keep things spicy, between all of the lower-stakes trash cleanup.

You also have what I call "customization satisfaction." With a simplistic skill tree system taking over the orbital sphere track of Remake, you'll still be able to choose your specializations on top of mastering weapon skills and, naturally, slotting in tons of m?aterial to?? your heart's content.

Screenshot by Destructoid

One huge thing to note is that not everything has been fixed when it comes to a few underlying issues. For one, the menus can be a nightmare, with party sorting options frequently obfuscated behind multiple clicks??. More party members means more problems, more material and equipment to slot, and more abilities to micromanage. It's not particularly difficult or heady, mind, it's just occasionally annoying. It's also mostly an endgame problem (which?? is when you acquire most of the equipment that has myriad material slots), but it's still an issue.

The hard "chapter-based" system works when you're telling the story the first time, but like Remake, it's extremely ri?gid on re-tellings, and when you'?re ready for endgame cleanup. For the sake of transparency, I had one hard crash in Chapter 3, but after loading an auto-save and missing no progress, it never happened again. That's the only real technical issue I had the entire time in my 50+ hour completion journey.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth somehow manages to spin multiple plates without smashing any of them. It's over-the-top serious when it wants to be, and it's utterly absurd in the next moment. Great Final Fantasy games have always managed t??o walk this line, and it's a testament to how the brand has stayed relevant for decades on en??d.

The original set of Tomb Raider games turned heads back in the day, and now, they're returning to Switch (and several other platforms) in the form of Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft. Yes, that's the real title, thanks for clearing up the st??arring role!

For real though it's been a long time since these games were released (28, 27, and 26 years respectively), so I can see why people would be rusty. Regardless of how well this Asypr set turns out, it'll be interesting to see old-school Tomb Raider talk flowing again. If you haven't run around like an idiot in Croft Man??or with Lara's butler yet, now is your chance.

Ah, publisher surveys. Yo??u gotta love 'em. Sometimes they'll press certain companies into reviving age-old properties, and what better company to dig up old c?hestnuts than Capcom.

The? latest survey co?mes by way of the Japanese site Capcom Town, which is currently hosting a "super elec??tion" with 10 simple questions ?to answer. There are nominal rewards involved for reaching certain participation milestones, but the rule rub lies within the content of the questions themselves.

Let's take a look at ??what could be cooking at Capcom in the next?? decade or so.

Capcom yet again asks fans about the viability of reviving old IP

Once you register, you'll gain access to the survey. To sate your curiosity, here?? are all of the questions:

  1. Which Capcom game do you like the best?
  2. Who is your favorite Capcom character?
  3. What do you look for in Capcom games?
  4. What image do you have of Capcom?
  5. Are there any Capcom game series (including spinoff games) that you would like to see get a sequel or new game?
  6. Is there a game you'd like to see completely remade with the latest technology, including character designs and story direction?
  7. What was the first Capcom game you played?
  8. Which Capcom game has influenced you the most?
  9. Do you have a complaint you would like to share with Capcom?
  10. We welcome all your support for Capcom (the answers include yes, no, and it depends on how Capcom acts)

Notably, as part of?? question five, the?? options include:

  • Darkstalkers
  • Okami
  • Onimusha
  • Ace Attorney
  • Street Fighter
  • Sengoku Basara
  • Dino Crisis
  • Dead Rising
  • Devil May Cry
  • Dragon's Dogma
  • Toraware No Paruma
  • Vs. Capcom
  • Resident Evil
  • Final Fight
  • Breath of Fire
  • Ghosts 'n Goblins
  • Monster Hunter
  • Lost Planet
  • Mega Man
  • 1942

As is the case with Capcom at any given moment, several of these franchises have gotten a few refreshes over the years (even Ghosts 'n Goblins), and some of them are currently undergoing a lengthy hiatus. But the ones that stick out like a sore thumb include Onimusha (which hasn't gotten a mainline title since 2006, but did see a remaster in 2018, and an anime in 2023), and Dino Crisis: which has been as dead as a dinosaur since 2003 (some would say even before tha??t).

This is F-Zero-level dormancy here (granted, that one at least got a snazzy "99" battle roy??ale spinoff). Maybe one day some of these forgotten stories will be retold. Hey Capcom, where's the Asura's Wrath option?

In a blink or you'll miss it moment at the end of the January 2024 PlayStation State of Play ?stream, Hideo Kojima confirmed that he was working on a new "stealth espionage" game, due after Death Stranding 2. I know!

All the Physint details we can muster

Sony isolated the announcement with the brief view below from their YouTube channel, and most of it just involves talking about the reveal.

We did get a bit of PR that we can glean some additional information from, even though it's slim pickings. Kojima Productions has announced that the project will be "in partnership" with Sony Interactive Entertainment, and that "preparations are underway" for its development, which will "begin in earnest after Death Stranding 2."

Curiously, Kojima specifically notes that he has been collaborating with Sony for some time (dating back to the Metal Gear Solid/PS1 era) and that Sony "also produce[s] music and films, and this will definitely be a strong collaboration." Kojima boasts that this project will use "cutting-edge technology" and will sport a "stellar cast." He mentions that this title will be the "culmination of his work" (nothing to r??ead into from that phrase!), and calls it "an interactive game, but...also a movie at the same time."

The video then zooms out to show an aerial view of Columbia Pictures studios, with the Physint logo emblazoned on the marquee sign. Sony seems to be sinking a lot of cash into this production, which is insane given that Death Stranding 2 already looks like a marvel based on an early trailer. Expect lots of Hollywood shine, from audio ?to video quality.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEpK67JDLu8

Is Kojima just going to make a Konami-free Metal Gear Solid?

So with all of the? major motion picture hubbub and the Columbia Pictures tease, it's obvious that Kojima will continue to hire Hollywood actors for this next project. The real question is: Does he just convince Kurt Russel to finally come aboard and make the true-to-life inspiration for Solid Snake?

We likely won't hear more about this project until after Death Stranding ships (in 2025!), but for now, Kojima is up to his old tricks,?? building hype.

So we haven't done one of our "where is our review" posts in a while, because frankly, we generally get copies of AAA games on time. Although there have been bumps in the road every so often, most gaming publishers want people to try ou?t their games early, from the press to content creators, to any number of other folks in this modern media landscape.

So why does no one seem to have Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? I don't rea????lly need to spell it out, but just in case: consider waiting on reviews for this one (from whoever you get your opinions from).

The lack of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League codes is not only worrying, but strange

In the weeks leading up to the game's February 2, 2024 release date (hey, that's soon!), we've heard more and more about how press outlets are not getting code. We typically have issues with sorting WB due to our historical criticism of the publisher's handling of...well, you name it...but it seems like every other major outlet also does not? have access to the game in any capacity.

IGN's Destin Legarie even shared his frustrations this past ??weekend, noting that his negative preview (you and practically everyone else's!) could have led to a lack of access, but it goes deeper than that. Legarie contends that the game's sponsored stream over at IGN had major quality control issues (like characters straight-up not showing up in cutscenes), and alleges that community managers (CMs) deleted comments critical of the game. Many of my peers are in the same boat, and no one I personally know has had access to the game prior to the early access launch. We went through a similar process with Gotham Knights.

//twitter.com/suicidesquadRS/status/1751938662093263232

Well, the worrying was warranted!

So I've described the confusion leading up to launch, but said launch isn't going swimmingly either. The official Suicide Squad game social accounts have shared that "a number of players are currently experiencing an issue" where "full story completion" is granted after logging in. Great start! An emergency maintenance period is already underway, and folks are reporting that even the offline version of the game is impacted.

While we're perfectly content waiting this out and playing the game alongside everyone else, it just goes to show the importance of early access. It allows folks t?o be the canary in the coal mine, providing a watchdog-esque role so people don't buy a $60 (or more) broken pile of code, with context for questions such as "Is there offline play?" and the like.

Naturally, WB will get the game back in a workable state (to avoid a lawsuit at the very le??ast), but how worka??????????????????????????ble will it end up being? Stay tuned!

Back in December, the social deduction phenomenon Among Us crossed over with Vampire Survivors. The result was a surprisingly fun (and cheap) DLC called Emergency Meeting that launched on every available platform??....except Switch.

Thankfully, that's changed as of this week.

Poncle confirms that the Among Us DLC and Adventures are now live on Switch

Thanks to a tweet from developer poncle, we have full co?nfirmation that Emergency Meeting and Adventures?? are live on Switch.

So I mentioned that the Among Us DLC was cheap. How cheap? Try $2.50, with a 10% discount through the rest of the month (January 29 at 2:59AM ET to be exact). Note, however, that you may need to search for the Emergency Meeting DLC directly on the eShop, as the official shop page doesn't list it yet.

Adventures are the other big addition to the Switch version and include extra quests and challenges (which are essentially remixed versions of existing content). Adventures are free on all platforms, but you will need to?? own the appropriate DLC to play the DLC portions.

Interestingly enough, all versions of the game (Steam, Switch, Xbox, iOS, and Android) now have feature parity...except the bizarre Tesla edition of the game, which just got the wintery Whiteout update several weeks ago.

In case you missed it, two new amiibo have a street date of today, January 19, 2024. I know, these things pop up unexpectedly! Those two additions are Noah and Mio, two of the primary protagonists from 2022's Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Yes, it's been nearly two years since that game came out, but 2023's Future Redeemed DLC helped keep it fresh in our minds. Well, the DLC and the aforementioned amiibo drop, of course. Those two amiibo come with special outfits, which can be unlocked instantly by scanning the figures in: we have a full guide here if you need help.

Can you get the Noah and Mio amiibo rewards without the amiibo figures?

Note that you can acquire the amiibo outfits through other means, but it's not going to be easy, unless you have an endgame save file handy. Requirements range from defeating a superboss (Seraphic Ceratinia) to spending several hundred Nopon Coins at the Nopon Coin X??-change at the Sage's Domicil?e.

You can find the full patch notes below.

Latest update: Ver. 2.2.0 (Released January 18, 2024) [Full notes]

Additional Functionality

  • Now compatible with “Noah?and “Mio?amiibo. By scanning the amiibo in “System?> “amiibo?in the Menu Screen, you will be able to use the following special clothing items.

    • Noah amiiboYou can acquire the “N’s Consul Suit?outfit for Noah. You can also get variations without Noah, Lanz, or Euni’s jacket.
    • Mio amiiboYou can acquire the “M’s Consul Suit?outfit for Mio. You can also get variations without Mio, Sena, or Taion’s jacket.

  • Fulfill certain conditions and talk to the NPC Miibomii at Llyn Nyddwr Camp in the Fornis region to receive rewards identical to what would be received with the Noah or Mio amiibo.

Things are starting to pick up for the Switch eShop, as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Another Code: Recollection are both launching on the same day. Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is another pretty fun addition, which we have a review for ??if you're interested.

Although we haven't gotten any first-party heavy-hitters yet, it's just January, and the eShop has a decent selection of both old and new games to peruse (that includes the instant drop of two Golden Sun games!). I have a good feeling about 2024!

In case you're wondering, the first upcoming Nintendo game will drop on February 16, 2024, as the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong series returns to the fray. Then there's Princess Peach: Showtime in March. It'll be a quiet January for now!

There are very few years that aren't "winners" for Nintendo. You can set your watch to the publisher putting out at least one Game of the?? Year nominee annually. Now, it's time to decide the be?st of 2023.

Zelda in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Obviously, all eyes are going to be on Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As a follow-up to Breath of the Wild, it was expected to deliver: But I don't think anyone could have anticipated just how much it would iterate upon the fantastic framework we already got with the launch of the Switch in 2017. People may have been worried that Tears would operate like an "expansion pack" to the 2017 modern clas??sic, but those fears were completely un?founded.

We also got a new Fire Emblem game, another Pikmin entry (which might be the best one to date), a slick remaster of a great Kirby title, a killer Xenoblade Chronicles DLC, and Paranormasight. 2023 was packed and succeeded in hitting us acr??oss the head with a steady stream of prior-delayed games at once.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is an amazing family game for the Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been called "the best Mario game since Super Mario World" by many and is the perfect prescription for folks who have been burned by the constant deluge of the "New" subseries series. Although most Mario games are s?hoo-ins for nominations?, this one feels different.

Image via Intelligent Systems

Fire Emblem Engage

Any given Fire Emblem game is going to appeal to certain types of people, but this one grabbed me really early on. It helped that the DLC leaned into the w??hole "all-stars" angle, and brough??t multiple generations of the series together in one bright and accessible entry.

Pikmin 4

I can't say enough nice things about Pikmin 4. When I was playing it, I couldn't stop. There's so much to do and explore, and just when you think it's ove??r, the game completely opens up. Oh, and it's still incredibly cute.

Paranormasight

You can always count on Square Enix to surprise us, sometimes in the most unlikely way possible. One month I looked up and realized "wow, there are multiple Square-backed RPGs coming out this month, and I haven't heard about any of them for weeks." Paranorm??asight crept up on a lot of us but managed to leave an impact on most of the staff. Once this game gets running, it doesn't let up.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland

Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe

Kirby's Return to Dreamland is low-key one of my favorite Kirby games, and I was happy to see it return, with some bells and whistles, in 2023. There's not much to say about Kirby that hasn't already been said: it's comfort food at worst, and in the case of Dreamland Deluxe, it's a high bar that hearkens back to the era of Kirby Super Star.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed

I have an entire room of my house that's littered with just Xenoblade pictures, and I really need to up my game and get some Xenoblade Chronicles 3 scenes in there. Future Redeemed was a ??fanta??stic bit of DLC that both continues the story of the third core entry and ties the entire universe together.

Check out the ??nominees below, and come back next week for our full reveal!

Here are the nominees for Destructoid’s Best Switch Game of 2023:

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder
  • Pikmin 4
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Paranormasight
  • Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe
  • Fire Emblem Engage
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed

Our final results will go live next week, starting on December 18 with the winner of Best Indie. Stay tuned throughout thi??s week for the rest of our nominees, as we build up to the Overall Game of the Year award on December 22!

It's time for one of the last Nintendo Downloads of 2023. The 21st and 28th will likely be light on games, as most of the major releases (including the new Pokemon Scarlet & Violet DLC) are already out.

For now, you can enjoy Harvest Moon 64, 1080 Snowboarding, and Jet Force Gemini on the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service: as well as Palia. I've been playing a ton of Stardew Valley again on Switch, so Harvest Moon and Palia sound like really great follow-ups once I've exhausted everything (again) in Stardew.

Fa?ir warning, there's a bunch of stuff out thi??s week yet again! Check it all out below.

We're nearing ??the end of the year folks: this is it!

Beyond the Avatar game the industry at large is settling down, as all of the gift cards and presents are lined up for the holidays. This week's big release is Batman: Arkham Trilogy, and your guess is as good as mine in terms of whether or not WB actually got this compilation up to code before launch. Given their track record, all signs point to "?" That's coming out on December 1, if you somehow haven't played this series at all yet. As a reminder, the trilogy comes with Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight - and the latter dropped in 2015. Yep, it's been a while since we've gotten a proper Arkham game.

The other main release this coming week is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, which is out on that same day.

The Switch eShop has been bombarded with late-comer indies, AAA releases, and first party Nintendo games for weeks.

Now, there's a calm before the final holiday push, and Nintendo isn't even headlining anything this week in particular. Instead, Nintendo is reminding folks to check out their holida?y sales, and that's not a bad idea! Stop reading this article and consider picking up Super Mario RPG on Switch.

I'll make the same pitch I made decades ago when I came across it on the SNES: it's an all-c??omers RPG. No matter how much you might dislike the genre or Mario as a concept, it has plenty of ways to win you over. It's also perfect for folks newer to RPGs as a whole and th??ere are enough hooks present for veterans.

If you're already on board or can't be swayed, there's plenty of other stuff to sift through too. Persona 5 Tactica and Bluey: The Videogame both arrive on November 17; and Howl, Backpack Hero, Passpartout 2: The Lost Artist, and Enjoy the Diner all came out as a result of the recent Indie World Showcase.

Warcraft Rumble has a?...lot going on that hampers the overa??ll player experience, but one late-to-endgame design choice really takes the cake. Make sure you pick up one of each leader if you intend to progress in Warcraft Rumble in any meaningful way.?? Or, you can stop playing, that's fine too.

Endgame is predicated on having one leader of each type

Up until sigil level 75 (sigils essentially serve as your account level/progression marker), the easiest way to progress with the game is to clear every new stage as it is unlocked. Once you get to level 75 (a process we go over ex?tensively in this late game guide), things slow to a crawl, new levels stop opening up, and things get murkier.

From here on out, you'll need to clear each old stage on heroic mode (read: levels are harder with new twists), with a leader from each faction. So that's five clears for any given old stage for one sigil. It sounds grindy, but in theory, since each round only takes a few minutes, you'll be able to g?rind those sigils out quickly...right? Well, it depends.

As a reminder, here are the different faction types in Warcraft Rumble:

  • Alliance
  • Beast
  • Blackrock
  • Horde
  • Undead

In case you were wondering: Yes, Blizzard can absolutely lock you out of earning more leaders, and prospective players (fairly easily I may add) can "accidentally" lock themselves out of progressing b??ecause they picked multiple leaders in the same faction. Again, you'll need one of each to earn a sigil for those heroic levels: partial progress gives you absolutely nothing sigil-wise.

To make matters worse, earning leaders through the G.R.I.D. (one of the ??other randomized free-to-play barriers in the game) is tough because they're "family-locked" each week. Meaning, you can only earn Blackrock leaders for a full week, then it'll swap to Horde, and so on.

If the intention was to get people coming back to the game to progress, this system is a failure. Folks are more likely to just uninstall it entirely than put up with it. But if you are intent on playing throug?h it and potentially earning 100 Sigils to unlock Onyxia's Lair (the final endgame stage at launch), keep this PSA in mind!

Fallout 76 was released on ?November 14, 2018 in a wretched state, and I absolutely cannot believe it's been five years since then. While most publishers would have buried it and moved on, the?? creative team got to work and the funding arrived to salvage the game. To celebrate, in-game events are on the way.

Fallout 76 5-year anniversary event details

We're not getting a massive quality of life overhaul or DLC per se, but there will be a streaming event on Twitch on Tuesday November 14 at 3PM ET, as well as a birthday event from now through Nove??m??ber 21 at 12PM ET.

Here is the full rundown ?of the stream from Bethesda:

"Organized by our friends at Fallout for Hope, we have over 40 floats, live music, Atom giveaways and more! Did we also mention that Adrienne Barbeau, who you know as the voice of the Overseer, will be doing a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. introductio??n speech? And who better to narrate the parade than Wes Johnson himself? Wes Johnson who you know as the voice of?well?all our favorite robots! Protectrons, Fasnacht Paraders, Nuka-World's Dr. Del Walsh, and many more! (No, seriously, look him up we love his voice!)"

Fallout 76 is in good company, alongside No Man's Sky and Final Fantasy XIV (1.0)

While there was no excuse for the state it was launched in, Fallout 76 gets high marks on its report card in the BUG (bring-up-grades) section. The team actually committed to making the game better, and while it took nearly two years to add NPCs (the turning point for 76), they came all the same. It sounds rediculous, adding in content that seems standard for open world games, but such was the early state of Fallout 76.

Hogwarts Legacy kind of came and went earlier this year (twice, if you count the PS4/Xbox One ports), and now it's about to release a third time: on Switch. It's due out on November 14, and depending on who you ask, the below debut game trailer is either miraculous or messy. It really depends on your taste in Switch ports. The real test is going to be how it plays and if it can maintain a consistent framerate.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will offer some counterprogramming. Described as a "chaotic rhythm adventure," this single-system multiplayer game looks promising. It's out on November 14. Plus, a bunch of oth??er games are out between now and the next?? week, so check them all out below!

After a week of nearly nonstop play, I hit a wall with Warcraft Rumble and the gr?ind is in sig??ht. Here's how it all went!

Warcraft Rumble (Android, iOS [reviewed on an iPhone 13])
Developer: Blizzard
Publisher: Blizzard
Released: November 3, 2023
MSRP: Free-to-play (with microtransactions)

The core game is fun, but it needs some economy tweaks

Warcraft Rumble is a 1v1 tap-to-deploy lane-based battler that asks you to send units off to micro-wars to take down an opposing headquarters. Your job? To march and destroy the opposite base before your opponent takes out your own, through clever countering and smart resource management. Each unit is associated with a cost (typically dependent on power level), and while your unit coffers rec?harge automatically, Kobolds can be deployed to mine ore on the map for more resources.

Although there are a lot of nuances involved, air units generally counter ground units, ranged units counter aerial, and so on. Look, Blizzard basically took Clash Royale and Blizzified it. Now instead of sending out knights and wizards, you're throwing Alliance soldiers and Horde Shamans. Tomato tomatoe.

The thing is, it's really fun, and Blizzard—the masterminds that they are—prey on nostalgia. Units will spout famous phrases from Warcraft lore, and all your favorites are here, including leaders like Tirion Fordring, Sylvanas Windrunner, and more. The animations are full of life, and the art team did an incredible job of recreating some of the more iconic bits of Warcraft history in this ostensibly silly, vibrant world that exists inside of the Hearthstone universe.

The core systems are good too. Starting off countering is intuitive, then it becomes a tapestry of strategy as you're attempting to divine o??ut how to become the most efficient tower-killer machine possible. Some units have very unique abilities, and others are hybrids of multiple unit types. You'll also be able ??to play around with "Unbound" units, which can be summoned anywhere on the map at will (and are typically balanced by higher troop prices, or weaker stats).

Nearly every match is engaging as a result of everything coming together so splendidly. It's easy to assume that you can rest on your laurels as your army marches into enemy territory, but a few quick summons could completely wipe your board and turn the tide. If you lose?, it's no biggie; just start again and either keep the same loadout, or swap to something else.

There's a lot to do until you hit a wall

Warcraft Rumble progress is tracked by "sigils," which are essentially account levels (I got up to 68 before I felt fatigued). More features will u??nlock the more you earn sigils by completing stor??y levels, which in turn leads to more units, more leaders, and more options.

Gi??ven that matches only last a few minutes on average, it allows for a wide array of experimentation. Want to try a new leader and a completely different loadout? Easy! If it sucks, you just re-arrange it until you're happy. I've done this many times and eventually came up with a few arrangements that I really vibed with, and ended up doing exceedingly well in PVP. Coming up with those combos and figuring that puzzle out was a rush.

It helps that leaders all have different core abilities, and buff specific units when used in tandem with that leader. So Horde leaders often provide bonuses to Horde units, and so on down the line. Since the game doesn't restrict you in any? way (it just nudges you toward synergy), there are a ton of possibilities to sift through. It's meaty.

Here are all the things you can do beyond playing ??through the core story:

  • Play through dungeons (a series of three levels)
  • Rise the PVP ranks with scaled units
  • Join a guild and collectively earn more rewards like additional leaders
  • Replay old levels on heroic mode for added twists (many of which are fantastic) once you reach 50 sigils

The core loop grabbed me ??immediately, then slowly but surely be??gan to annoy me.

Monetization starts out innocuous, then it gets more insidious

It sounds like I'm having fun with Warcraft Rumble right? Well, I am! But it also takes a turn. Most of you are probably reading this review to see if Warcraft Rumble eventually becomes one of those mobile games, and it does.

Starting off, and all the way to the mid-game, you likely won't be s?wayed to spend any money at all. Rewards flow freely, and you'l?l be able to acquire a hefty army full of leader options very quickly. I was actually surprised at how much water that typically stingy hose spat out, and having tons of leaders is especially useful for army testing and PVP.

The thing is, eventually, those units do need to level up to take on s??ome of the tougher stages (which really kick into gear around 5?0 sigils, about halfway through the story); and your means of doing so are very slim. While grinding dungeons to upgrade your leaders is actually viable and painless, leveling your units is much more obfuscated, and is done in a way to drive you to microtransactions.

The game boasts a "quest" system that allows you to level up units, but it's pai??nfully slow and centered around individual boosts rather than large swaths of army leveling. Then there's the G.R.I.D., which is a randomized table for upgrading your unit's rarity (which in turn grants them game-changing powerful abilities, like polymorphing the first unit shot by the S.A.F.E. Pilot). To upgrade those units, players need to acquire stars (another leveling currency beyond XP), Arc Energy, and cores; the latter two of which are the main upgr?ade currencies. Confused yet? Well, it was designed to be confusing, and it really puts a damper on widespread meaningful progress.

The more units you have the more options that the game will pull from for randomized XP boosts, making it extremely hard to actually build a core loadout. You might have a really high XP unit that isn't rare or higher, or a rare or higher unit that isn't very strong/is low level. We know why it's being done this way ?($$$), but it's incredibly ob??tuse and will ensure that many players stop playing, uninstall, and never go back (until the inevitable currency grace patch comes in the future, when the player base needs a kickstart).

It's a shame, because the team only needs to tweak a few things and combine a few currencies, and the game would become instantly smoo?ther and less predatory. Having to deal with bugs that soft and hard crash the game doesn't help.

Try out Warcraft Rumble, or don't - that's OK too

Putting this many roadblocks in Warcraft Rumble, after Blizzard has al?ready stumbled enough, takes guts. Hopefully, Blizzard doesn't squander their potential audience because of it, as the design team deserves better. Given the state of many free-to-play games though, the monetization is likely working as intended. If that's the case, maybe we'll get a microtransaction-free Apple Arcade version down the line.
