Japanese result oust Ryu from the top spot

Capcom held a poll last month asking us who our favorite characters are from the series. Results are in, and boringly enough, Ryu came in 1st, followed by Ken, Akuma, Chun-Li, Cammy, an♉d 🌊Sakura on the global results.

From there, things get a touch more interesting. Karin (who hasn’t been seen in a Capcom Fighter game since the Alpha days) came in 7th on the global poll, right behind Sakura. On the Japanese scoreboard, Karin actually came in 1st, knocking Ryu into 2nd place. Cammy’s in 3rd, Ingrid (really?) is 4th, R. Mika is 5th, and we finally see Sakura in 6th.

Some of you are sure to chalk this up to Otaku culture’s fascination with school girls, but if that’s the case, why did Sakura come in behind R. Mika? Others may chalk it up to Anglophilia, but if that’s the case, why did Ken come in 9th?

Whatever the reason behind Karin’s presumed popularity in Japan, I hope it leads to seeing more of her in the future. She’s a great character, attractive but not sexualized, interesting but not gimmicky, formidable but not cheap. I’d be totally happy with it if she and Sakura headlined Street Fighter V, with K𝕴en and Ryu relegated to secret character status.
