The Z Fighters are ready for Battle!

Bandai Namco released the latest update of Dra??gon Ball FighterZ earlier this week. Version 1.38 sees major changes to both character balance? and universal system mechanics.

The new balance patch is DBFZ's first in over a year and comes nearly seven months after the game received a long-awaited rollback?? netcode update on February 28. The patch was handled by Bandai Namco ??and the developer Arc System Works in a team effort.

Version 1.38 focuses on increasing player options and game speed b??y buffing character damage and pressure sequences, and decreasing the effectiveness of over-centralizing mechanics. Other changes include buffs to anti-air attacks, invincible super moves, and the speed?? of normal attacks.

Overview of Changes

Z Assist (C Type)

C Type assists received a universal nerf b??y having their cooldown time increased. The move retains its ability to gener?ate huge advantages and mixup opportunities but will no longer be the highly abusable tactic it has been in previous patches.

Sparking Blast

Players can now Super Dash or perform Special Moves out of any Special Move while Sparking Blast's effect is active. This change boosts the overall power level of all characters and allows players to have greatly ?increased freedom of expression when attacking or juggling their opponent.

Anti Air Attacks

Certain invincible moves that could only be stopped with crouching heavy attacks now have increased vulnerability to anti-air attacks, increasing player options for dea??ling with approaching opponents.

Super Moves

The invincibility of Super Moves for each character sta??rts faster, giving them increased utili??ty.

Special Moves

Light, medium, and hea?vy variations of Special Moves now count as separate attacks towa?rds the Z combo limit. This change gives players enhanced freedom of expression in their combo routes.

Normal Moves

Many normal attacks are now faster and remain active for a longer period of time. Some characters received new attack extensions o???r the ability to extend attacks even after missing the opponent.

Fatal Fury is back and fans?? could not be more excited to return to South Town and see —after multiple crosso??versTerry Bogard and Rock Howard back in the leading roles.

But with the exception of the duo, which characters are set to be featured in the game's main roster? Here are all the characters confirmed to be present in Fatal Fury City of the Wolves.

All Fatal Fury City of the Wolves confirmed characters

Apart from Terry and Rock, B. Jenet, Preecha, Vox Reaper, Marco Rodrigues, Hotaru Futaba, Tizoc, Kevin Rian, Billy Kane, and Mai Shiranui are confirmed to be part of the Fatal Fury City of the Wolves main roster. According to SNK, the game will have a total of 17 playable characters at launch, with five ??more already confirmed to be released during its first DLC season. You can check out an o??verview of each of the confirmed characters, as well as their trailers below.

Rock Howard

Image via SNK Corporation

Terry's protegee and Geese Howard's son, City of the Wolves marks Rock's second outing as the series' co-protagonist. Like in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, he seems to be a rushdown character capable of excelling by both keeping opponents in check and closing the distance fast. As you can see below, he still retains his ori?ginal moves, as well as the ones learned from Terry and inherited through his blood.

Terry Bogard

Image via SNK Corporation

It wouldn't be a Fatal Fury title without the Hungry Wolf, am I right? Not much is known about Terry's story within the game, except for the fact that he spent years fighting after he? and his disciple went their separate ways in the previous entry. As you can see below, he seems to continue his streak as the ideal all-rounder, being able to fit both aggressive and more reactive playstyles.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOgqzwzzn4o

Preecha

Image via SNK Corporation

Making her debut in the franchise, Preecha is both a talented scientist and Joe Higashi's pupil. She makes use of an adapted form of Muay Thai in co?mbat and as we could expect, seems to play similarly to how her master does. You can check out her gameplay in the trailer below:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-goMmeKMvA

Hotaru Futaba

Image via SNK Corporation

One of the best characters among the Mark of the Wolves roster, Hotaru Futaba returns, this time set to once and for all get her older brother back. As their stories are deeply intertwined, her summary all but confirms Gato as part of the game's main roster. You can c?heck out Futaba's move?set in the trailer below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CUNSBLopqw

Tizoc

Image via SNK Corporation

A soon-to-be main for many of the King and Zangief players we all love to face, Tizoc also returns in CoTW. Now back i?nto the ring for good, The Griffen Mask joins the newly announced KOF tournament to lift the spirits of one of his fans. You can see a glimpse of his moveset in the trailer below:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaDGhdfTJgk

Marco Rodrigues

Image via SNK Corporation

City of the Wolves marks Marco's first appearance in any SNK game since 2006's SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash DS. Once more making use of Kyokugen Karate, the Brazilian sensei enters ?the new KOF tournament in the hopes of both recovering his stolen Dojo sign and spreading the word about his fighting style.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TfQQ1jde5g

B. Jenet

Image via SNK Corporation

A fan favorite since her debut in Mark of the Wolves, it was clear that B. Jenet would return on CoTW. This time, the captain of the Lillien Knights joins the KOF?? tournament for a chance to face both Grant and Kai again. As you can see in the trail??er below, she seems to have access to most of her previous moves. But she won't be limited to them, as showcased by the counter that took the internet by storm since her reveal.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv61rOpOYlU

Vox Reaper

Image via SNK Corporation

An assassin for hire, who is taken under Grant's wing after failing to kill Mark of the Wolves' villain Kain R. Heinlein, Vox Reaper features what I can only call a caffeine-infused version of his master's playstyle. His motivation in the game seems to be to both honor Gr?ant's wishes and see Kai's ambitions fulfilled?.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRHPunjhqGM&t=30s

Kevin Rian

Image via SNK Corporation

A MoTW top-tier whose fighting style mixes grabs, heavy hits, and a lot of explosions, Kevin Rian returns in City of the Wolves. His goal? To find Freeman —the man responsible for the death of his best fr?iend. Like with Gato and Futaba, his summary heavily hints at his rival's presence within the game's main roster.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekd2XTPAx48

Billy Kane

Image via SNK Corporation

After being left out of the previo??us entry, Billy Kane and his bo staff are back. Now the ?leader of the Howard Connection and carrying the responsibility of keeping his master's empire alive, Billy joins the tournament for one reason above all, to hunt the Legendary Hungry Wolf.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-XEdURwdeU

Mai Shiranui

Image via SNK Corporation

The heir to the Shiranui-style ninjutsu, Mai returns to the Fatal Fury franchise after her unexpected exclusion from Mark of the Wolves. Now donning a new look and using an even more refined version of her explosive fighting style, she arrives in South Town after following an important tip-off from Sokaku Mochizuki. Although their stories have been deeply intertwined since Mai's debut, it's still unknown if Andy will b?e featured as part of the ?game's base roster.

When is Fatal Fury CoTW being released?

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be released on April 24, 2025. The game will be available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. If you cannot wait, those who preorder the title will be able to play it three days early. Doing so will also get you access to a Fatal Fury 2 DLC costume for Terry.

With Dr. Doom the focal point of the current Fortnite season, players will have to confront one of the better-known antagonists from Marvel Comics. However, those with a keen eye who play fighting games may notice that Doom has an attack hearkening back to his Marvel vs. Capcom (MvC) days.

Players partaking in the new Absolute Doom season are feeling the wrath of the very notorious "foot dive" move he performs in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. On Twitter, user CaptainGalxy highlighted Dr. Doom's signature hit as it appears in Fortnite and it looks like plenty of ?fol?ks have nostalgia for it.

//twitter.com/CaptainGalxy/status/1824423928154165386

It seems like Victor von Doom leaps into the air, charges up with a glowing green aura, and announces his attack with an insult-to-injury "you're beneath me" quip. Take the hit or move out of the way, as it won't kill you, but it will disorient you from its pushback. This has to be an intentional nod to the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting game franchise.

With the resurgence of the Marvel fighting games, namely the first two, this obvious nod to the franchise is just what we need to keep the momentum going. What better way is there to build hype than to possibly reenact the iconic moments between characters who appear in these older titles and who are now in Fortnite?

As someone who puts dozens of hours a month into fighting games, this crossover, especially with its detailed fan-service additions, make the new season of Fortnite that much more enticing to hop back into. This really is the “New Age of Heroesâ€?in a different coat of paint. Hopefully, some of these collaborations bring those who aren’t even into Fortnite out, at least to see how far it has evolved s??ince the “OGâ€?d??ays.

One of the most highly anticipated fighting game releases outside of the big three, 2XKO will allow players to take control of their favorite League of Legends cha??mpions in 2v2 battles where team synergy and mastery are the keys to suc?cess.

But given how League's roster is composed of more than 160+ playable characters, it's a given that the large majority of them won't be featured in the spinoff. So that you can see if any of your favorites made the cut, here are all of the champions and skins confirmed to be present in 2XKO.

All 2XKO confirmed champions and skins

The 2XKO roster is currently composed of Ahri, Yasuo, Darius, Ekko, Illaoi, and Braum, with the Hero of Freljord being its latest addition. It's also worth mentioning that Jinx is a??ll but confirmed to join the above, as glimpses of her early gameplay can be seen in a?? few Riot Games videos focused on the title. You can check out more on each of the confirmed characters below, which includes a look at all of their skins.

Ahri

Ahri, one of the playable champions in 2XKO.
Image via Riot Games

One of the first champions ot join the 2XKO roster and an absolute fan favorite, Ahri is a rush-down character who excels at applying pressure from both close and mid-range. She als??o has in her projectiles the right tools to keep opponents in check and open them up for highly damaging mixups on both the ground and the air.

All 2XKO Ahri skins

The only announced skin for the nine-tailed fox in 2XKO is Dynasty Ahri. Like in the original game and as you can see below, apart from her overall look, the skin also changes the color of both her Foxfire orbs and effects to bright pink. Like with each champion's default look, all skins in 2XKO also have color variants.

Ahri's Dynasty Ahri skin, as showcased in 2XKO.

Yasuo

Image via Riot Games

Equally beloved and hated by the game's community, Yasuo is a character who excels at neutral given his ability to deflect projectiles by performing Wind Wall and the range of his norma?ls/specials. His biggest tool, however, lies in his Calm stance, which enables long-range attacks and can be canceled from any of his specials for extended combos and highl?y damaging mix-ups.

All 2XKO Yasuo skins

Bladesong Yasuo is the only Yasuo skin revealed for 2XKO. Featuring a look that led to many Varus comparisons upon its reveal, the skin was —like Dynasty Ahrimade available for the first time during the game's August?? 2024 Alpha Lab test. No skins apart from Dynasty Ahri and Bladesong Yasuo were revealed at the time of writing.

Darius

Image via Riot Games

Featured as part of the game's roster since the world first learned about what would become 2XKO, Darius is a mid-range heavy hitter capable of keeping opponents locked in place through both range and might. That is further amplified by his ability to apply the Wound effect to targets, which boosts your duo's block (or chip) damage against them. But be careful, as the effect will end and need to be reapplied after any member of your team takes damag?e.

Ekko

Image via Riot Games

A mix-up machine and one of the game's most technical but rewarding characters, Ekko excels through his ability to perform unthinkable reversals and cross-ups by activating his Z-Drive, which allows him to pl?ace afterimages in the field and then rewind to their position at will. As we can expect of a prodigy, he also has in his Attempt #37 Ultimate a great tool, as it can be performed as a counter to either escape tricky situations or finish a match with style.

Illaoi

Image via Riot Games

Even if having in her high-damaging no?rmals and more straightforward specials a great source of damage, Illaoi has in her ability to spam tentacles in the field her biggest differential, as they can either automatically attack opponents or perform follow-ups. That allows the Truth Bearer of Nagakabouros to excel at controlling the tide of battle, all while also being capable of performing extended combos. Just keep in mind that the tentacles can be easily destroyed by a single hit.

Braum

Image via Riot Games

A heavy-hitter capable of freezing opponents on the spot, Braun is a character that mixes utility with a solid defense, the latter a fruit of his ability to shield himself and his ally by perfor?ming Stand Behind Me. He can also acquire Unbreakable by ??performing certain moves, which will provide armor. Unbreakable can also be spent to power up many of his specials, such as The Heart of the Freljord, as well as his assists.

When will 2XKO be released?

2XKO is set to be released in 2025 for both PC and current-gen consoles —PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. As you wait for the game to be released, don't forget to also check out our League of Legends Swarm Tier List.

Broken characters are not a st?range concept for fighting game fans, as even the most cherished and acclaimed franchises within the genre have a few within their mix.

But which among this wide array of infamous faces can be considered the strongest, or for some, most unfair? For all looking to see where their worst nightmare??s sit at the table, here are the 10 most broken fighting game characters in history.

10. Phoenix/Dark Phoenix (Marvel Vs Capcom 3)

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbwwWA6PXlc

Although one of the most fragile members of its roster, Phoenix opens our list for one reason above all, she has a boss-like second phase. To be more specific, Phoenix can turn into Dark Phoenix and recover all of her HP in all MvC3 versions if defeated while having five-meter bars. But like most bosses, she does not simply rise from the ashes, as the health regen is paired with a full-??screen Hyper, a 20% All DMG boost, and the ability to perform enhanced versions of all of her already upper-tier moves.

As a statement of how good the character is, even after being heavily nerfed with the release of Marvel Vs Capcom Ultimate, Phoenix is still one of the most broken members of its? ros??ter to this day.

9. Hilde (SoulCalibur IV)

Image via Bandai Namco

One of the most straightforward characters here, Soulcalibur IV's Hilde terrorized the community in the game??'s heyday given her long-range and known Doom Combo, which allows her to either get a guarantee ring??-out from almost anywhere in most stages or start a massively damaging loop by chaining set charged attacks.

To no one's surprise, that caused her to be eventually banned from multiple tournaments, as matches i??nvolving her would often end a??s soon as she managed to score a hit.

8. Bayonetta (Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS)

Image via Nintendo

In 2016, Nintendo decided to stay true to a fraction of Bayonetta's true power for her debut as the final DLC of Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS (or 4), which resulted in the Umbra Witch?? being able to zero-to-death targets no matter her placement by performing Witch Twist mixups. But wait, what if you beat her to the punch? In this case, she can, to this day, lock you in place by performing Witch Time for a guaranteed combo as well as stop you on your tracks from a distance by using a wide array of different projectiles that, if hit, will open you for a TOD.

Even if nerfed heavily since her debut, it's no surprise why many still dread meeting Bayonetta when returning to SSB4?? on either its native platforms or on the ?Nintendo Switch.

7. Pet Shop (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future)

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyGeRVWioK4

One of the most well-known broken characters in fighting game history and a highlight in a game famous for its unbalance, Heritage for the Future's Pet Shop is the definition of a frustrating matchup, as apart from being able to automatically avoid lows and flying to create distance, he can also? make use of homing projectiles and hit you at all times by dropping stalagmites with his Icicle Break Special.

The latter is what segments his spot here, as his ability to use the ability while being attacked and freely ac?t while his projectiles are on the screen allows Pet Shop to perform multiple unblockable mixups, many known to lead to TODs.

6. Sailor Uranus (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S: Jougai Rantou!? Shuyaku Soudatsusen)

Image via Arc System Works and Bandai

Arc System Works's Sailor Moon S is, for many, the most broken fighting game ever released, given its over-the-top damage calculations and easy TODs, but no member of its roster comes close to Sailor Uranus. The reason for that does not lie in her damage or the various applications of one of her specials. Instead, it's all about her broken Shadow Dash move, which a??llows Uranus to traverse almost the entire screen at unmatched speed and becomes invincible if perfor??med as a reversal when on the player 2 side.

The above allows her to both avoid most attacks and perform easy punishers, which? can lead to her TODs and a few highly damaging special moves. Like most characters here, Uranus is currently banned from many competitions.

5. Lab Coat Android 21 (Dragon Ball FighterZ)

Image via Bandai Namco

Lab Coat Android 21 is both Dragon Ball FighterZ 's last DLC character and one of the most recent personifications of DLC-meta. The reason? She was in a league of her own at launch by having both no noticeable weaknesses and the ability to lower the DMG of enemies by 21% while also increasing her Special DMG by the same amount through her Photon Pulse command grab —wh?ich, of course, could be easily performed mid-combo for a guaranteed hit.

The above led to the character being slightly nerfed a few months post its release, as well as banned from multiple tournaments. Today, Lab Coat 21?? is still considered a top tier, even if she is no longer alone at the top.

4. Meta Knight (Super Smash Bros Brawl)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl's version of Meta Knight is considered by many as the most broken character the Smash franchise has ever produced, a title he earned in part given his phenomenal mobility, omnidirectional moves, and ability to juggle opponents to oblivion through his?? Shuttle Loop attack. The biggest reason, however, lies in his ability to stall, as Meta Knight players can force time-out wins by both planking and then siz-zagging (or scrooging) below the arena or by performing his vanishing move Dimensional Cape before making a series of key inputs to trigger a glitch and stop him from rea?ppearing.

As a surprise to no one, the above saw Kirby's rival being ban??ned from multiple competiti??ons, while those who still consider him legal decided to apply specific rules to guarantee fair play.

3. Gill (Street Fighter 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike)

Image via Capcom

Another character capable of resurrecting, Gill is infamously considered the most broken character in the Street Fighter 3 series, which says a lot considering the series' other great surprises, such as 2nd Impact's Ibuki.

Available for the first time in the home console port of 2nd Impact, Gill brings to the field all you can expect of a boss character ??by pairing his already-mentioned ability to come back at full life with unblockable AoE suppers and the ability to deal massive amounts of chip damage, the latter which can cause you to ??be defeated without him having to land a single clear hit. To top it all off, he can also perform TODs.

2. Akuma (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo)

Image via Capcom

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo's Akuma is both one of the most ruthless bosses in fighting game history and one of its most broken fighters. Showcasing what I can only assume to be a lore-accurate description of the Destroyer of the Heavens, Akuma can send off extremely fast projectiles, has access to an unbelievable on-air fireball, and can perform improved versions of all of Ryu ?and Ken's moves. That is then paired with the highest da?mage in the game and an ability to —like Pet Shopperform unblockable mixups at will.

1. Ivan Ooze (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition)

Original image via Moby Games

The most infamous face when the subject is broken characters and by far the most unfair to ever be featured in a fighting game, MMPR: The Fighting Edition's Ivan Ooze is a nightmare capable of per??forming a wide array of spammable and multi-hit homing moves, most of which possess invincible variants. Also, did I mention that he is immune to throws, is the only character in the game capable of flying, and makes his inability to block meaningless through the way all of his m??oves —that's right, all of themcan lead to TODs?

Now that you know who are the most broken characters to ever debut in a fighting game, don't forget to also check out the 10 best fighting games that aren't Street Fighter, Tekken, or MK.

An incredibly underrated fighting game, DNF Duel, is currently ??free-to-own on the Epic Games Store right now. It may not have many players ??now, but I still think it is worth playing.

It is being offered alongside CYGNI: All Guns Blazing, a visually intriguing shoot 'em up, and the Conduit Free Unlock Bundle for Apex Legends, which grants you t??he Legend Conduit for free, plus a skin. T?hey are all free-to-own forever, as long as you claim them before August 15 at 4 pm BST / 11 am ET/ 8 am PT.

But why should you play DNF Duel (besi?des that it's free)? Sit down and let me tell you.

It's actually published by Arc System Works, makers of Guilty Gear, so of course it has an awesome anime art style with a deep fighting system. I enjoy ArcSys games, so I picked it up back when it came out in 2022 and loved th??e heck out of it.

One of the main mechanics of the game is being able to use simple direction inputs for moves think Super Smash Bros. However, if you prefer traditional fighting game controls, those are available as well, and will even reward you with more damage. It's an input style that's become more popular in recent years, expanding across a bunch of different fighting games including Street Fighter 6.

We here ?at Destructoid thought it was an easy-to-learn hard-to-master fighting game, but worried ab??out its longevity. And while its online servers aren’t super populated right now, it still has a niche community and had a community tournament at EVO 2024.

I still highly recommend trying it out if you are a newcomer to fighting games. Maybe just find a Discord or group that plays together, if you are planning on playing online. Plus, if you enjoy it, there are fiv?e DLC chara??cters that are also on sale for 50% right now to expand the roster.

Riot Games has begun inviting players to participate in its 2XKO Alpha Lab test. If you're interested and want to join the action, here's how you can secure your spot in t??he test.

How to join the 2XKO Alpha Lab

For now, there are ??on?ly two methods to join the ongoing 2XKO Alpha Lab test, and unfortunately, both rely on a degree of luck.

Receive an Invitation

The simplest way is to have Riot Games directly invite you. To be considered, though, you must have a Riot Account and sign up for the test on the official 2XKO website, if you haven't already. Make sure your account is using a verified e-mail, otherwise you won't be able to complete the n??ext step.

2XKO Alpha Lab instructions
Image via Riot Games

Once you register for the 2XKO Alpha Lab t?est, you'll receive an int??erest survey in the e-mail you used. This survey must be completed to be considered for the test. When you're done, the final step is to wait for Riot to invite you. Should you receive an invite, it will also come in the registered e-mail, providing you the opportunity to choose your preferred platform to participate.

Recieve a Friend Referral

The other way you can join the 2XKO test is by friend referral. Some of those who were invited to the 2XKO test also received a referral invite they could use to bring someone else into the test. If one of these players sends you a referral, you can play in the 2XKO Alpha Lab test without a Riot invitation. To be clear, this referral is not a key. It is a literal link you must click on. Only those with a Riot Account can use it ?to download and play in the test.

Unfortunately, there are no other known methods for joining the 2XKO Alpha Lab test, so you'll probably need to wait for an invite from Riot to get a chance to play it. The Alpha Lab test officially began on August 8 and will run until August 19. Currently, the test is only available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and? Windows PC.

It's almost time to start training as the Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact characters feature a wide move set and an astonishingly different range of heights all around. From Gon ?and his powerful punches to the massive Uvogin, there's likely a character for you in this anime fighting game.

Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact characters list

There is a mix of heroes and villains within the Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact characters list. Some star in the beginning of the anime while others a??re some of the fiercest foes that Gon and his friends face towards the end.

//youtu.be/ddlhWJWmfHk

Here are all of the Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact characters currently shown off, as of the ??time of writing:

  • Gon
  • Killua
  • Leorio
  • Kurapika
  • Hisoka
  • Netero
  • Uvogin
  • Biscuit Krueger
  • Chrollo
  • Feitan
  • Razor
  • Kite
  • Morel
  • Meruem
  • Genthru

All of these characters show their faces during the intro of the game, marking them as part of the base roster. Some notable exceptions so far include Ging Freecss (Gon's father), Il??lumi Zoldyck (Killua's terrifying brother), and Canary. There is definitely an opportunity for DLC in the future.

How does Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact play?

Hunter x Hunter Nen Impact is a 3v3 fighter that definitely takes inspiration Marvel vs. Capcom series. You're switching out characters mid-combo and resting allies so they can build health. Kurapika's chains make him a long-range fighter,?? while Gon is in everyone's face, striking with his fists. The protagonist, however, does have som??e ranged potential. Killua, meanwhile, has electrical powers he can use to stun his opponents.

Hisoka is a scary fighter to go against, as he has a mixture of physical and ranged attacks. He can also pull in foes for a sticky situation with his Bungee Gum power. Leorio is a surprisingly strong fighter, as shown in the Evo Exhibition tournament. He can strike the ground and hit his foes with projectiles from underneath; he's certainly unconvent?ion??al.

The fearsome Uvogin from the Phantom Troupe has a ton of armor possibilitie?s and he can be tough to face against. Established fighting game player Justin Wong during the Exhibition tournament stream said whiff-punishing Uvogin's slow attacks will help you a lot with countering him.

Tekken is a franchise widely known for giving players a high degree of freedom when the subject is customization. That, of course, remains true in Tekken 8, which results in the debut of both novel crossovers and cu??rsed cr?eations.

But did you know that it is possible to make high-quality custom characters while only using F2P items/options? To help you add even more personality to your main, here are 10 great custom characters/ outfits you can make for free in Tekken 8, as well as how to make them.

Ryu and Ken (Street Fighter)

To start with two of the most popular customizations in the game, you can fight while dressed as both Ryu and Ken in Tekken 8 by using the simple Gi and headband combinations below. If you w??ant to go beyond and fully embody the world's most famous shoto duo, equip the Shareen Short Hair on your Ryu and a blonde Lee Short Center Part Haircut on Ken.

  • Head (Ryu only): Japanese Headband (Short) - Red. You can also use a white Japanese Headband (Long) for that Street Fighter Alpha look.
  • Upper Body: Karate Top (Gloves) - Use a white Gi for Ryu and a red one for Ken. Keep in mind that Ryu wears red gloves while Ken favors black ones.
  • Lower Body: Ripped Karate Bottoms - White for Ryu and a red pair for Ken.
  • Shoes: No shoes.

2B (NieR)

For all Nier fans looking to showcase their love, you can dress Alisa, Lily, and Asuka as 2B by first equipping their Tek??ken 7, Tekken 8 Style [P1], and Tekken 8 Style [Lili P1] outfits, respectiv??ely. After doing that, simply paint your chosen outfit completely black and equip the below:

  • Hair: Short Bob and Bangs - White.
  • Glasses: Blindfold.
  • Accessory (Optional): Naginata. If you have purchased the Ninja Pack DLC, use the Ninja Katana to equip a weapon resembling 2B's signature Virtuous Contract.

Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil)

One of the most known custom characters in the game, made famous by Reddit user shmick28, you can turn any male character into Leon by equipping them with the Short Curtain Haircut, a brown Aviator Jacket, a pair of black Slacks, and the Nicklas Boots. To finish the look, many also enjoy giving him the Shotgun Accessory. To recap, here's how to make Leon's signature Resident Evil 4 Remake look in Tekken 8:

  • Hair: Short Curtain Haircut (Light brown). Make sure to change the color of your character's eyebrows as well.
  • Upper Body: Aviator Jacket - Brown.
  • Lower Body: Slacks - Black.
  • Shoes: Nicklas Boots - Black.
  • Accessory: Shotgun (Optional).

Ada Wong (Resident Evil)

As she is the only character in the game who wears a dress similar to Ada's, you can only replicate the latter's classic Resident Evil 4 look while using Nina. To do that, equip Nin??????????????????????????a with her Tekken 8 Style [Alternative A] or [Alternative B] outfits before changing the color of your chosen dress to red. After doing that, just equip her with the Asuka Short Hair and change the color of her eyebrows and hair to black.

If you are not a Nina main, you can also cosplay as Ada with any other female character by pairing the Asuka Short Hair with t?he assemble below:

  • Glasses: Nina Sunglasses - Black.
  • Upper Body: Trench Coat or the Detective Coat - Light brown.
  • Lower Body: Slacks - Black.
  • Shoes: Nina High Boots (Stockings).

Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury/KOF)

Terry is everywhere, so why not bring him to Tekken? Taking inspiration from Reddit user bitboydz, you can make the Legendary Hungry Wolf by first changing your chosen character's hair and eyebrow colors to blonde (if needed) and equipping a red Baseball Cap. Now, go to Accessories and pl??ace a Straight Hair Extension B on the back of their head to simulate Terry's long hair before equipping the below:

  • Upper Body: Biker Vest - Red vest, white shirt, and black gloves.
  • Lower Body: Jeans - Any shade of blue.
  • Shoes: High Top Sneakers - Red and white.

Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)

You can make two distinct versions of Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo in Tekken 8, one featuring his The Battle of the Strongest outfit and one boasting his Hidden Inventory look. We will be focus??ing on the former, which can be made by selecting any character and then equipping them with the follow?ing:

  • Hair: Leo Short Hair - White. Make sure to also change your character's eyebrow color.
  • Eyes: Beast.
  • Upper Body: T-shirt - Black.
  • Lower Body: Karate Bottoms - White pants with a black belt. If using a female character or Leo, use either a white pair of Checkered Slacks or a white pair of Wide Jeans.
  • Shoes: A black pair of Letter Shoes when using a male character / Loafers (Socks) when using a female character or Leo.

Power (Chainsaw Man)

You can make Chainsaw Man's Power in Tekken 8 by first equipping your chosen character with the Alisson Summer Medium Hair and then changing its color to match the character's. To make her ho?rns, we will then use two Single Horns placed at the center of her head. Once you are done with the above, simply add the following to the mix:

  • Eyes: Sunflower (Use Justify if you have acquired it as a paid-tier Tekken Fighter Pass reward).
  • Upper Body: 3/4 Sleeve Shirt (Necktie) - Black necktie.
  • Lower Body: Checkered Pants - Black.
  • Shoes: Steve Snickers. Make sure to paint all of its colored portions with pink.

Sanji (One Piece)

The first custom character I ever made in the game, you can turn any male Tekken 8 character into Sanji by dressing them up with a Formal Jacket, a pair of Stripped Slacks, and a pair of Leader Shoes. Although no hairstyle in the game can come close to his, the Leo Short Hair, the Short Curtain Haircut, and the Asuka Short Hair will provide a similar look. If using a female character, pair your chosen hairstyle with a Blazer, a pair of Checkered Pants, and with the ?Loafers (Socks).

To recap, here are the items needed to make One Piece's Sanji in Tekken 8:

  • Hair: Leo Short Hair / Short Curtain Haircut / Asuka Short Hair - Blonde.
  • Upper Body: Formal Jacket / Blazer - Black with a golden dress shirt and a black tie.
  • Lower Body: Stripped Slacks / Checkered Pants - Black.
  • Shoes: Leader Shoes / Loafers (Socks) - Black.

Trunks (Dragon Ball)

Even if not as popular as the Super Saiyan Goku and Badman Vegeta custom outfits, Tekken 8 allows you to make a spot-on recreation of Future Trunks (also known as the best version of the character). You can make Trunks in Tekken 8 by equipping the following:

  • Hair: Short Curtain Haircut - Light Purple
  • Upper Body: Motorcycle Jacket - Matte purple
  • Lower Body: Slacks - Black pants featuring a golden or yellow belt
  • Shoes: Boots / Steve's Boxing Shoes - Golden

As revealed by Youtuber reinanuoni, you can also make a jacketless version of Tru??nks by pairing the Jeans with Chain with a Tank Top, as using the latter will cause the top to be tucked in.

Now that you how to dress your favorites as your well, favorites, don't forget to also check out our updated Tekken 8 v1.06 tier list.

It is not an understatement to say that Tekken 8 features one of the most balanced rosters within the franchise, a?s ??new patches are constantly released to address unintended behaviors and provide buffs and nerfs in equal measure (in most cases).

But no matter how balanced a game might be, it is unavoidable that some characters will perform better than others. To help you be ready for the next battle, here's an updated tier list featuring all of the playable characters in Tekken 8.

  • Before we start, keep in mind that a character's placement here should not discourage you from trying them out, as mastering your main and understanding the opposition will give you a fair chance no matter who you face.

Tekken 8 Tier List

Side-stepping away from the usual S to C format, we decided to divide our Tekken 8 tier list into six tiers, going from S+ to B —the latter given how I don't believe any member of the game's roster is bad enough to be considered C-Tier. You can check out our tier list below and a deeper dive into each ti??er by heading further down.

Tier Characters
S+ Dragunov, Nina, Jin Kazama, Feng Wei
S Ling Xiaoyu, King, Claudio, Yoshimitsu, Reina, Marshall Law, Alisa
A Shaheen, Kazuya Mishima, Jack-8, Leroy Smith, Azucena, Steve Fox, Lee, Leo, Paul Phoenix, Hwoarang, Kuma, Victor, Lili, Bryan, Lidia
B+ Lars Alexanderson, Asuka Kazama, Jun Kazama, Panda, Devil Jin
B Eddy, Raven, Zafina,

In the S+tier we have characters with no (or very few) bad matchups, courtesy of their versatility and ability to keep tabs on yo???u at all times. Among them, Dragonov stands in a class of his own, as even if we argue that Nina's amazing pokes and Jin's mix-up potential set them on equal footing, they pale in comparison to the suffocating pressure the White Angel of Death can apply on both mid and close range. His ability to crouch cancel also adds another layer to his already-filled toolkit.

In the S-tier, we have what I like to call S+ characters with weaknesses. That means that using them will demand taking a few risks, even if some cases —like King'swill produce a massive payo?ff. That also makes them considerably easier to punish when compared to our top tiers. An exampl?e of that can be seen in Alisa, who can be easily countered with well-timed sidesteps.

In the A-tier, we have characters that are just as dangerous, but have way clearer strengths and weaknesses when compared to the above, which ?limits them to a certain degree and translates to a higher amount of bad matchups. The home? of most of the game's cast, you will also find a good mix of technical (such as Lili, Steve, and Kazuya) and easy-to-pick-up characters here.

As the game's newest addition, it's important to highlight Lidia here, who earns a spot thanks to her ability to quickly close the distance (especially with her excellent →→2 and running + 1) and perfo??rm a good array of mix-ups.

In the B+ tier, we have characters that albeit solid, lack versatility. That causes them to quickly become predictable, as most of their out-of-the-box options and mix-ups won't offer a decent payoff. Some will? also have gimmicks that can do more harm than good in certain instances or have in their large majority risky moves, such as Jun and Devil Jin respectively.

On B-Tier, we have characters that can still deplete your health bar in seconds but are considerably easier to punish even if the player decides to shift its pace, which can make them feel one-dimensional and cause them to be easily countered when faced with high-level players. The biggest example of this is Eddy, who although one of the biggest nightmares for new and intermediate players given his long strings and unhol??y lows, needs to dance ?over eggshells when faced with most matchups at a high level.

Now that you know in which tier your favorite character is, don't forget to also check out how to successfully read combos online in Tekken 8.

One of the biggest pieces of news coming out of Evo 2024 was the announcement that Heihachi would be coming back to Tekken 8. This rules because it's both the return of the series' most iconic villain, but also because this particular update might change the way the story of Tekken progresses going forward.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWDIKKvNrc

What's so special about Heihachi in Tekken 8?

Tekken 8, like most modern fighting games, is no stranger to DLC characters. It had previously added Eddy Gordo, the fan-favorite capoeira fighter introduced way back in Tekken 3, and is about to introduce Tekken 7's Lidia, the I kid you not Karate-fighting Prime Minister of Poland.

Heihachi, however, will be the first DLC character in Tekken history to feature a return powerful enough to push the plot forward. That's right, even though Tekken 8 had seemingly concluded in the most epic way imaginable for a fighting game, that's actually far from the ending of the game's story. With Kazuya out of ??the picture (for now), Heihachi wants back in.

How is Heihachi even back?

Despite its extremely over-the-top plot, the Tekken series has yet to feature an instance of actual resurrection. A bunch of Iron Fist Tournament contenders such as Armor King, Jun, and Baek, have already seemingly died in past games, only to just come back a few games later with vague explanations similar to "I actually wasn't all that dead. Also, I'm here to do battle, why? are you asking me all these questions?" I totally get that, because why would you throw away a beloved character that already fits the highly precise gameplay ecosystem of the game?

In? regards to Heihachi's return, well, I just don't know whether he's actually coming back from the dead, or if he'd just been enjoying a nice little restorative nap inside a volcano. Also, I'm fine with whatever explanation, and I think most fans will be as well. Serving the plot is important, but the main driving force of a fighting game will always be its gameplay.

Heihachi had seemingly died at the hands of Kazuya at the canon ending of the original Tekken, then supposedly once again right at the start of Tekken 5. Heihachi survivin??g against all odds is no?? surprise to anyone who's been with the series for a while.

Please enjoy the beautiful moment below of a panel where series head Katsuhiro Harada states that Heihachi is "completely dead". Nobody is able to take him seriously, and I'm pretty sure the man himself had to use all of his strength to avoid breaking cha?racter:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWCF4_xqmxo

Harada then even had the gall to come to Twitte??r and rub it on hour faces that he'd been playing us like a fiddle all along. And we're all just absolutely here for i??t, because is it even a lie if we'd been on it the entire time?

//twitter.com/Harada_TEKKEN/status/1815167483881607385

What's new about Heihachi?

The most important question, probably, is what will Heihachi be attempting to do in Tekken 8? Are we about to see a more back-to-basics approach as Jin and Heihachi go for a more realistic battle at the end of the extended campaign, or has Heihachi finally unlocked a super power of his own? I mean, he mustn't have survived falling into a volcano just out of sheer luck. Personally, I'd love to see a DLC campaign that reminds me of the more grounded days of, say, Tekken 3. And, given the more personal nature of the very final battle seen in Tekken 8, I'd argue that it's not co?m?pletely out of the cards.

Whatever Heihachi's revenge plan might be, I like the idea of an evolving plot inside a fighting game. Tekken 7 was the best-selling and most-enduring game in the series, and if Tekken 8 wants to do even better, this is a smart way to keep players engaged. I wasn't originally too hot on the plot of Tekken 8; I believed the series had gone off the rails plot-wise a long time ago, but I actually enjoyed seeing all the hard work put into the massive scope of Tekken 8's campaign mode.

It remains to be seen whether Heihachi's DLC will feature such grandiose action setpieces as Tekken 8's campaign, but the idea of seeing the plot advance with at least some of the DLCs is definitely a welcome one. Heichachi will be the penultimate programmed DLC character to release for Tekken 8, so it remains to be seen whether the supposed final DLC will offer yet another explosive conclusion to the story of Tekken 8.

Evo is the biggest fighting game event in the world, but it's something that might've flown under your radar if you don't care for them. Still, even if you’re a stranger to the genre, you’re likely to have already watched “Offic?ial EVO moment #37" somewhere. That's the name of a clip from an early iteration of the tournament in which Daigo Umehara has an unbelievable comeback after seeing his HP reduced to a point that it becomes invisible. Yesterday, on the second day of Evo 2024, we witnessed what many fighting game experts are already heralding as Official Evo moment #38.

In short, long time pro and legend Hayao likely made the best use of Hugo in the history of Street Fighter to seal the win against FrankieBGF's Ken.

//twitter.com/Evo/status/1814877953597067298

But there's way more to it than just that. We cannot resort to Evo's knowled??ge, as the tournament's own Twitter account was flabbergasted when it made the tweet, so let's try to break it down with the help of history.

What made Evo #37 moment special was something that immediately became known as the Daigo Parry. If you're to rewatch the original clip, you'll see that Daigo has no HP left, and he's up against Chun-Li's special. Dodging isn't a possibility, and neither is blocking, as even blocking will let damage in. So, Daigo resorts to parrying, which means he had to perfectly time moving forward for every single one of the 17 moves that comprised Chun-Li's special. At that time, n??ot even most pros - certainly not Wong, the man up against Daigo - knew that could be done.

What happened yesterday wasn't a dethroning moment for #37, but at least a worthy new addition to the legendary moments of the tournament. Hayao managed to us??e Hugo, arguably a much weaker character than Ken, to pull off another legend-worthy comeback. This time, instead of pulling off a perfect parry, Hayao successfully uses what most thought was a completely useless move to dodge Ken's ultimate and get the win.

And that’s just the cherry on top of the cake, as Hayao also made the round??s for his ab?solutely hilarious pop-offs:

//twitter.com/JWonggg/status/1814968261915955515

And masterful pre-match routines:

//twitter.com/Furious_blog/status/1814877383327183077

Let me remind you that this man is in his 40s. I say that not to shame you for being unable to pull off the splits - at least statistically - but because Hayao has been a tremendous player and a fantastic showman to watch for so long. Hayao ended up in fourth place in the Street Fighter Third Strike tournament, with MOV claiming the final victory, ?but It's just really cool to see Hayao finally getting his deserved time in the spotlight.

Out of all the new characters to be announced for Guilty Gear Strive at EVO 2024, I don’t think Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was on anyone’s bingo card.

In a now private video, Arc System Works revealed a new three-versus-three mode, new stages, and four new characters including fan favorites Dizzy and Venom as well as Unika from the upcoming Guilty Gear Strive anime. But mo?st surprising of all is a guest character: Lucy.

We here at Destructoid love Edgerunners it has a gripping story that expands the Cyberpunk world in whole new directions and just has some phenomenal characters. Lucy is an odd addition to the world of Guilty Gear, but in the grand scheme of things it i???sn’t all that weird.

Guilty Gear has similar themes and visuals to the world of Edgerunners, with bombastic over-the-top artwork and individualist ideas. Both Arc System Works and Studio Trigger are known for their flashy action, so I think Lucy will fit well into the ?roster.

We won’t see Lucy playable until 2?025, so we’ll have to wait a while until we get to see her in action and how she fits.

In a move so many hoped would be made, Universal and DreamWorks have announced that a fifth Shrek movie is on its way to theaters. The long-awaited film aims to release on July 1, 2026, giving fans ample time to get dust off their Shrek nostalgia goggles and embrace all things green and swampy. Of course, this means a bunch of Shrek franchise rewatches are likely to unfold in the coming months, but that's not all those deep in the Shrek fandom are up to in preparation for the sequel.

While he's best-known for his big screen adventures, Shrek (Mike Myers) is a multimedia icon. In addition to movies, shorts, and boatloads of merchandise, the ogre is no stranger to the gaming scene. He has appeared in tons of titles over the years, from the video game adaptations of the Shrek movies to more off-beat endeavors like Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing and Shrek Super Party, leaving fans with plenty of play throughs to enjoy between now and the release of Shrek 5.

Speaking of odd, non-movie-related Shrek video games, perhaps none are as fascinating and fun as Shrek SuperSlam. Courtesy of publisher Activision and developer Shaba Games, this 2005 release is a wacky platform brawler featuring numerous Shrek franchise favor??ite characters, locations new and familiar, and a ha?ndful of engaging game modes to take for a spin. Overall, it's an absolutely bonkers game that, unfortunately, many have forgotten as the years have wore on, yet still retains a devoted following.

Thus, not only does Shrek SuperSlam deserve a second look almost 20 y??ears after it hit store shelves, but it's overdue for a remake, and now is as good a time as any to make it ??happen.

A Shrek SuperSlam remake can capitalize on mounting Shrek nostalgia

Image via MobyGames

Even though the Shrek film franchise came to fruition almost 25 years ago as of publication, and a new big screen entry in the saga hasn't release in almost a decade and a half, Shrek has hardly faded from the public eye. Through memes, streaming services, and the character's enduring marketability, he and his entire supporting cast have remained relevant to some degree. They may not be at the forefront of popular culture currently, but that is about to change in a big way with Shrek 5 on the way.

It stands to reason that Universal and DreamWorks are cooking up all kinds of merchandise and brand deals for Shrek and his companions with their next film in progress. In the 2020s, the movie tie-in game is no longer a thing as it was in the 1990s and into the 2010s, but that's the beauty of a Shrek SuperSlam remake. It doesn't have to directly follow the plot of the new film. It can simply give fans a nostalgia trip as they duke it out with longtime favorites in famous locales. Fans of the original will be intrigued by the idea, and those unfamiliar with the first release might be enticed by the nostalgic nature of Shrek alone.

Additionally, remakes rooted in nostalgia for beloved TV shows and movies have generated all kinds of positivity. Look no further than the critically successful SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated and the excitement surrounding the forthcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Considering the responses to these titles and others, Universal and DreamWorks would be foolish to leave the customer goodwill and, of course, money, in a Shrek SuperSlam remake on the table.

Shrek SuperSlam needs a facelift in more ways than one

Image via MobyGames

Of course, the question you're likely asking, dear reader, is why Shrek SuperSlam? Of all the Shre??k games to remake, why that one specifically?

Well, as established, strict movie adaptation games really aren't all the rage these days, and, truth be told, the bulk of the Shrek games aren't that great. A lot of them are pretty bare bones and not super fun to play. Shrek SuperSlam brings the fun factor, there's gameplay variety, unlockables worth chasing, and it serves as an excellent translation of Shrek's world into video game form. Not to mention, platform brawlers are still adored, as evidenced by the Super Smash Bros. franchise remaining a powerhouse and the likes of MultiVersus and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl finding niche followings.

It should also be said that Shrek SuperSlam is dated, to put it lightly. The game mechanics are clunky, with hit detection and targeting being pretty hit or miss, and the graphics aren't great by modern standards. So, graphical and gameplay overhauls would be nice, especially if the minds behind?? it studied some of the aforementioned games, determining wha??t works for them and what doesn't. An online mode wouldn't be a bad addition either, as the original game released prior to the popularization of such gaming.

Continuing the improvement wishlist, it would also be wonderful to see inclusions from projects released post-Shrek SuperSlam. Playable characters like Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), and J?ack Horner (John Mulaney) and stages like Worcestershire Academy, Rumpel's Far, Far Away palace, and San Ricardo would be awesome to see join the fray, and would beckon those on the fence about spending the money to give the remake a try.

Image via MobyGames

The fan demand for a new take on the game is ogrewhelming

As if these reasons weren't compelling enough to build a case for a Shrek SuperSlam remake, to further drive the point home, one can look to the people. Suffice to say, Shrek fans new and old alike harbor a lot of love for this bizarre yet endearing fighting game. For proof of this, look no further than the r/ShrekSuperSlam Reddit community, where thousands of users have come together to share all things related to the game. A scroll through th??e homepage brings up everything fr?om recent social media posts about the game to tips and tricks for new players to memes.

Not only are Shrek SuperSlam fans eager to chat about the game itself, but some have even taken their interest in it to another level. For example, back in 2021, one fan known simply as Victor took it upon himself to basically single-handedly remaster the game. Despite not having much of a background in game development, his love for Shrek SuperSlam helped him to push through the project, remastering characters, stages, HUDs, menus, and more. “Just like the Shrek movies are a parody of fairy tale movies, Shrek SuperSlam is a parody of fighting games. But even though they are parodies, Shrek is still a great fairy tale movie, and Shrek SuperSlam is still a great fighting game,he told Fanbyte.

Evidently, we're in the perfect storm for a Shrek SuperSlam remake. Love for the Shrek saga is high, as is the love for the 2005 game, and platform brawlers are currently a hot commodity in the gaming world. Time will tell if such a project will become a playable reality, or if fans will have to rely on the existing copies out there as well as other fans updating the original to get their Shrek SuperSlam on.

Although Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat are seen as the symbols of the fighting game? genre, their styles are not guaranteed hits, with many preferring to venture toward other IPs for their daily dose of adrenaline.

But diving into a new fighting game is not a trivial matter, after all, no one wants to fall in love with a title only to find either a bare-bones experience or no one else playing it. Here are the best fighting games to play right now that are not part of the Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat franchises.

10. Killer Instinct

Image via Iron Galaxy Studios

  • Release date: November 22, 2013
  • Available on: PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X
  • Developed by: Double Helix Games (At launch) / Iron Galaxy Studios
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

To start with a well-placed Wind Kick, we have Killer Instinct. Released in 2013 as a reboot, KI earned praise for its action-packed gameplay but divided many given its small roster? and content approach. Fast forward 10 years and 20 characters later, and the ??game has grown to be an unquestionable success.

Looking a little more into its combat, Killer Instinct offers an easy-to-pick-up but highly technical approach that revolves around the ability to Combo Break. To put it on as few words as possible, the mechanic allows you to interrupt your opponent's offense through a well?-timed input. Get the timing w??rong, however, and you will be in for one hell of a time.

9. Brawlhalla

Image via Blue Mammoth Games

  • Release date: October 17, 2017
  • Available on: Mobile, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch
  • Developed by: Blue Mammoth Games
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

Brawlhalla is a live-service platform fighter that plays just like you would expect, you pick a character and then battle your foes until they either fall or are propelled out of the screen. Given its free-to-play status and?? cross-play/progression features, the game can be seen as the ideal pick for those looking to play online with fri?ends new to the genre.

Brawhalla is also widely known for its crossover characters. ?But don't worry, as to avoid turning a F2P game into a pay-to-win experience, all of them (except Rayman) are presented as skins to already existing and free-to-obtain units.

8. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (2016)

  • Release date: December 16, 2016 (PS4) / March 7, 2017 (PC / Xbox One)
  • Available on: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Series S/X
  • Developed by: CAPCOM
  • Does it have rollback netcode? No

An enhanced version of the title of the same name, now running at 60fps, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 allows players to pick from a roster of 50 signature characters as they take part in 3v3 battles. In true MvC fashi??on, air combos are the norm here, and a well-timed assist can change everything.

If you can, I recommend playing the game's PC version, as even if its base roster alread??y packs quite a punch, its community has done a phenomenal job by producing a wide array of extra characters.

7. UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes

Image via French Bread and Arc System Works

  • Release date: January 24, 2024
  • Available on: PS5, PS4, PC, and Switch
  • Developed by: French Bread
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

The latest installment in the series and a direct sequel to Exe:Late[cl-r], UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes takes a natural step forward by smoothing its predecessor's edges and ??adding new mechanics to the mix. True to the franchise's fame, the title also features one of t??he most diverse rosters in the market.

It's important to point out that, even if visually similar to other sprite-based series like BlazBlue and even its older sibling Melty Blood, UNDER NIGHT is a completely different beast. The reason? The way its Grind Grid system awards control, all while penalizing backpedaling?? and pus?hing you to be as efficient as possible.

6. Soulcalibur VI

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Release date: October 19, 2018
  • Available on: PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X
  • Developed by: Bandai Namco
  • Does it have rollback netcode? No

After the mixed reception of Soulcalibur V, Project Soul decided to bet all of their remaining chips in Soulcalibur VI, a soft reboot of the franchise taking place in a new ?timeline.

But although the game ended up failing to meet its publisher's expectations, SC6 succeeded in presenting the most polished version of the franchise's signature combat, now featuring improved animations and getting a breath of fresh air through new mechanics. In true Soulcalibur fashion, you will also find a good amount of single-?player content here, be it from?? its in-depth character creation system or its Soul Chronicle and Libra of Soul modes.

5. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

Image via Arc System Works

  • Release date: December 11, 2023
  • Available on: PS5, PS4, and PC
  • Developed by: Arc System Works
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

An updated version of Granblue Fantasy Versus, now featuring new mechanics, improved visuals, and the more than welcome addition of rollback netcode, GBVS RIsing's ability to blend standard fighting and RPG elements makes it one of Ark System Works's most distinct games.

Apar??t from its story mode bosses, that can be seen in the game's cooldown mechanic. Also featured in the vanilla version, the mechanic does exactly what you might expect and adds different cooldowns to Special Moves/abilities, thus forcing players to plan their every move to maximize their damage and options.

4. Dragon Ball FighterZ

Image via Arc System Works

  • Release date: January 26, 2018 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) / September 27, 2018 (Nintendo Switch)
  • Available on: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Series S/X, and Switch
  • Developed by: Arc System Works
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

The game responsible for raising the bar when it comes to anime/manga-based titles, Dragon Ball FighterZ takes the already over-the-top approach of most tag fighters and turns it up to 8000 by allowing players to both fly across the screen and make use of all?? of the planet-destroying moves they w??ish to come out on top.

The above is then paired with a roster featuring faces going from the classic Dragon Ball Z anime adaptation (and its many non-canon movies) to Super and even GT. In other words, no matter which season is your favorite, you are sure to meet a re?presentative here.

3. The King of Fighters XV

Image via SNK Corporation

  • Release date: February 17, 2022
  • Available on: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Series S/X
  • Developed by: SNK Corporation
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

Even if it hurts not seeing KOF as part of the big three, The King of Fighters XV is considered by many as the franchise's best entry point since XIII. After all, long gone are the days when your execut??ion needed to be pitch-perfect to land damaging combos.

The game also showcases significant improvements in presentation when compared to XIV, as well as a few new mechanics that premiered both at launch and later in the game's cycle (I'm lookin??g at you, Advance Strike). T?he roster also doesn't disappoint and features a total of 59 characters at the time of writing.

2. Guilty Gear Strive

Image via Arc System Works

  • Release date: June 11, 2021
  • Available on: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X
  • Developed by: Arc System Works
  • Does it have rollback netcode? Yes

The first Guilty Gear game to go mainstream, Guilty Gear Strive is the seemingly final chapter in the Soul Badguy story and the most inviting title in the franchise. Truly, what ArcSys managed to accomplish deserves commendation, as they succeeded in giving the series an overhaul ??while keeping its soul intact.

But that was not achieved without its losses, as many see the removal of certain moves/mechanics as a tone-down. For me, although I believe GG Strive excelled in?? adjusting its scope to make sure everything would be up to par, I can't say that I don't miss the wild Dragon Install Sol combos featured in the older entri?es.

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Image via Nintendo

  • Release date: December 7, 2018
  • Available on: Nintendo Switch
  • Developed by: Bandai Namco and Sora Ltd
  • Does it have rollback netcode? No

The latest in the series that helped coin the term platform fighter, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes the first spot in our list given ho??w its easy-to-pick-up mechanics and welcoming presentation make the game a guaranteed fit for all, no matter if they are newcomers looking to have fun or seasoned players.

Another huge difference between the game and pretty much all other fighting games in the market lies in its star-filled roster of 82, which features both Nintendo s?taples and wild crossover characters. Have you ever imagined having Bayonetta and Samus fare off against Joker and Sora? Well, w?onder no more.

On January 1, 2019, the professional wrestling world was shaken up with the introduction of a new promotion: All Elite Wres??tling. The company, spearheaded by Tony Khan, promised audiences an alternative to the longstanding WWE, with top-notch production, a stacked talent roster, engaging storylines, and, of course, world-class in-ring competition.

Of course, along with all of this, plans were in place for AE??W to merchandise itself. First came a litany of t-shirts, followed by a partnership with Jazwares to produce AEW action figures, and, at long last, a video game.

AEW: Fight Forever, from developer Yukes and publisher THQ Nordic, was announced in 2020, promising gamers an experience similar to beloved titles like 2000's WWF No Mercy. The game eventually made it to s?tore shelves on June 29, 2023, but did it manage to ??live up to such a high standard?

Upon release, Fight Forever proved a mixed bag. It earned praise for its fast-paced, fun-focused style, which was a welcomed contrast to WWE's slower, simulation-based 2K games. Fans also loved its strong roster and unique match types. Still, Fight Forever left a lot to be desired. Character customization is limited, and the story mode, Road to Elite, lacks depth. The graphics (chiefly wrestler likenesses) are hit-or-miss and, li??ke seemingly every new game these days, there were some gameplay bugs in need of patches. Overall, though, it seemed a solid first outing fo??r AEW in the gaming realm.

With the one-year anniversary of the release of Fight Forever right around the ?corner, one has to ask, is the game still worth playing all this time later? Here's the breakdown.

Image via THQ

Fight Forever still has a lot to offer one year in

As a whole, there's still a lot to love about Fight Forever, especially if you're loo?king for a fun wrestling game to play with friends. Though the combat is simple, it's easy to pick up and makes for an enjoyable in-match experience. The match types present are all solid, with unique ones like the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch making Fight Forever a must-play.

Thankfully, through the power of patches, most of the big issues plaguing the game around launch time have since been taken care of. Throughout its year in existence, Fight Forever has been greatly enhanced through post-launch content, too. First and foremost is the Stadium Stampede mode, where up to 30 players can wreak havoc in a massive arena in a battle royale-style experience. Other mini-games and the fighting game-esque Beat the Elite mode have also ad?ded replay value.

Then there are all of the roster additions that make the game feel a bit more current, as much of the base roster feels stuck in the 2020-2022 timeframe. Popular names like Samoa Joe, FTR, Swerve Strickland, Toni Storm, and Adam Copeland have joined the game, as have a host of others through paid DLC. New ?skins, arenas, customization options, and more have also come?? along.

Though it's unfortunate that it had to come through paid DLC, Fight Forever has become a more well-rounded, replayable package in its first year. There are more game modes and wrestlers to try out than at launch, assuming you want to pay for them, and patches have enhanced the overall quality of each playthrough. A year in, Fight Forever is more than worth picking up and playing, but it still has room t??o improve.

Image via THQ

How Fight Forever can improve in year two and beyond

Despite all this, Fight Forever isn't perfect. The Road to Elite story mode is still a short, shallow affair, and the online player base has dropped significantly, especially on Steam, so online play is a challenge for most players. This makes it particularly difficult to enjoy St??adium Stampede, as without players around t??o fill out those lobbies, wait times skyrocket, assuming you can find a game at all.

Of course, with AEW constantly making new talent acquisitions there are some major names still missing from the roster, including Will Ospreay and Mercedes Moné. Preexisting Fight Forever characters like Toni Storm and the Young Bucks ??could also use new looks to match their current on-screen gimmicks.

So, with all of that said, what should the folks behind Fight Forever focus on in the game's second year and beyond? Adding onto Road to Elite in some way, or adding another story mode through DLC, would be a major plus. The same could be said for keeping up with the roster additions to keep the game feeling as fresh a??nd current as possible.

Sadly, the developer cannot do much about the diminished online player counts aside from trying to entice players to pick up the game again. However, adding bots to Stadium Stampede to fill out lobbies ?could be smart, if?? for no other reason than to keep the mode playable for those who want it.

At the end of the day, Fight Forever still has a lot to offer gamers a year after its release. It has improved in more ways than one, amounting to one of the most fun modern wrestling games on the market. If you haven't played it in a while or haven't yet given it a shot, if you're a wrestling fan, you owe it to yourself to get in on it. At the same time, there's still plenty the minds behind it can improve upon. Should they do so, Fight Forever can and will go from great to truly elite.

It was unclear whether Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, the upcoming fighting game, would include local multiplayer. Those rumors have?? now been seeming??ly laid to bed, as the local multiplayer gameplay functionality was spotted by Twitter/X user SLOplays on the updated PS Store listing of the game.

The rumors about local multiplayer’s absence arose when the PlayStation and Steam pages listed it as a single-player game only with no mention of offline multiplayer. It was also reported earlier that game producer Jun Furutani said that local split-screen will not be present due to “issues relating to Sony and Microsoft./p>

If the store page is believed, it looks like local multiplayer will be in the ca?rds. Local multiplayer has been a staple mode in fighting games, and its absence would have been felt among fans.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a highly anticipated title among fighting games and Dragon Ball fans. The game has a packed roster, with many already confirmed as ?playable characters. It's even more exciting that many of the characters are yet to be announced.

The relaunch of Multiversus has already been a fairly divisive affair, but fans took note that the game was missing some fea??tures. However, the dev assures the game is bringing those features back.

Several feat??ures that were available in what PlayerFirst and the communit?y are generously calling the Beta were missing, which obviously rubbed fans the wrong way.

But Tony Huynh, the co-founder ??of Player 1st Games, took to social media to assure fans that those features would be restored ??soon.

//twitter.com/Tony_Huynh/status/1796903398920581259

"Many of these features are currently implemented and are in testing and we had planned, but were left out due to time as we had to rebuild every screen and feature again to support our new netcode and Unreal Engine 5 switch." Huynh revealed on his Twitter/X account.

When Multiversus finally returned after its long hiatus, fans were quick to note features were missing that had added to the game's online multiplayer. These components included leaderboards, match stats, a co-op vs AI mode, and a Smash Bros-like free-for-all mode that added random items.

Also missing was the ability to play as an unowned character in train?ing mode. Without this option, players are left with no means of test-driving a new character without unlocking them.

In their place was a brand new season pass with unlockables and a new single-player driven "Rift" mode. The reception to the new Multiversus has been fairly mixed, but hopefully this is just a smal?l bump? for this already controversial game.

Now that the beta has been offline for a while, the platform fighter Multiversus has returned for its 1.0 launch. You'll get the chance to play as many characters on the roster, all spanning from beloved TV shows, films, and comics. Here's what you need to know about Multiversus: A release dat??e, roster, free-to-play avail??ability, and more.

When does Multiversus 1.0 come out?

According to the game's FAQ pageMultiversus will be released on May 28, 2024. The exact time has yet to be set, but we'll update this guide once more informa??tion is announced. Pre-loads may also be available as the release date approaches.

If you have already downloaded Multiversus from the beta, you can play its 'offline access mode' in the Lab training room. This mode allows you to practice your moves, test out different c?haracters, and explore the game's mechanics without an internet connection. However, its availability will change with the full rel?ease.

What platforms can you play Multiversus on?

With Multiversus, you're not limited to a single platform. It's available to play on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or PC. And for those who like to switch between devices, Multiversus offers the convenience of cross-play and cro??ss-progression features. That means your progress is safe and sound, no m??atter where you play.

Multiversus roster: All playable characters

Like any fighter game, the roster is one of the most significant selling points. Check out the confirmed list of playable characters in Multiversus:

All characters mentioned above were confirmed from the official Multiversus roster. However, the only one not listed there is the Joker, who was introduced in the Send in the Clowns! gameplay trailer.

We've s???een a few snippets of Joker causing mayhem with his partner-in-crime, Harley Quinn. He harnesses multiple moves, including his Joker, Baby! dash attack and Dirty Dealer! long-range strike.

Aside from the Joker, Adventure Time's Banana Guard has been announced for the Multiversus roster. The snippet presents the characte??r's unique fighting style, using its spear to damage enem??ies.

//twitter.com/multiversus/status/1791514032932814886

Three characters from the Adventure Time series will make their mark, but we'll have to see if more of them are included. Jason Voorhees and Agent Smith have also been included in the roster, depicted in the official launch trailer.

Will Multiversus still be free?

Fortunately, Multiversus will still be free-to-play. Although there is a premium Battle Pass, you can take advantage of its free optio??n by playing many rounds??. It will take some time, but hey, at least it won't require any money.

Will progress and past purchases carry over to Multiversus 1.0?

As long as you made purchases before June 25, 2023, everything should carry over to Multiversus 1.0. This includes Battle Pass tokens, Gleamium, character tickets, and cosmet?ics. However, progress and purc??hased content made after this date will not transfer to the full release.

Ever since I started following Yoshihiro Togashi's fantastic series Hunter x Hunter, I've wanted it to get the Dragon Ball FighterZ treatment. Now, in 2024, developer Eighting is showing off its take on a HxH tag fighter in Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact. It's a little different than what ?I expected, but still has my absolute attention.

Eighting, for those who don't follow fighting games as closely as others, has been behind some notable cult-classic entries in the genre. The team worked on Fate/unlimited codes, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and notably, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. The tag DNA of MvC3 is apparent in Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact, which isn't just a three-on-three tag-team fighting game, but should look pretty familiar to anyone who's spent time with the Vs. series or games they've inspired.

Japanese esports organization CAG Osaka posted a video today (thanks, Gematsu) showcasing the Hunter x Hunter fighter. Nen Impact will be playable for the first time at Evo Japan this weekend, but before that, players from CAG—including GO1, a face you'll recognize from high-level DBFZ play—ran?? some ??matches for their YouTube. You can watch the footage below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiNemXQuEcM

The power of Nen

Immediately, Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact has some familiar framework. There are three fighters on each team, with one out front and the other two able to hop in for assists or tag them out. A Super bar in the corner can be cashed in for big attacks. "Overgear" seems to be this game's version of X-Factor, a powerful mechanic that can enhance your on-screen fighter and grows in power as you lose teammates??.

What I'm really digging are the kits and styles of each character we're seeing so far. The roster is just six fairly safe picks right now: Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, Hisoka, and Netero. Gon's got some big hits with his Rock-Paper-Scissors strikes, Killua's fast as heck, and Hisoka can pull off some tricks with his sticky gum. Kurapika, my personal favorite character, has some sick moves with his chains that remind me of Axl from Guilty Gear.

That's the good. On the flipside, animations are still looking a bit rough. Granted, it's early; Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact has not even locked in a release date yet, and we're looking at a six-fighter demo version. I had a similar wariness about early 2XKO footage, only to see it improve with new showings. Still, I hope Eighting is fine-tuning some of the presentation. Arc System Works set a really high bar for 3v3 anime tag fighters in Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Nen Impact will invariably get measured against it.

Right now, Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact gives me MvC3 vibes and, by extension, reminds me of Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, an underrated gem of a tag fighter. Hopefully this take makes a real impact when it arrives. And if Eighting is taking any fighter requests for ??all those unfilled roster slots, I'm hoping for some Chimera Ants like Neferpitou or Meruem.

If you're looking fo?r a new Cammy statue for your collection, Prime 1 Studios has you covered with its latest? tease.

Prime 1 Studios is known for its truly breathtaking, almost terrifyingly realistic statues (seriously, this T-1000 would terrify me if it was in the corner of my apartment).

Prime 1 also makes a fair number of premium gaming statues, including simply gorgeous lines based on Bloodborne and Devil May Cry. It's al??so working hard on Street Fighter statues, including an upcoming Cammy statue, which the studio revea??led a first look at on Twitter.

//twitter.com/mamegyorai_jp/status/1781561582063116579

Cammy is the latest in a line that already includes Ryu, Akuma, and Chun-Li. The statue, which depicts Cammy in her modern Street Fighter 6 costume, is crazy gorgeous, though.

For the statue, Cammy is in her traditional victory pose, with her back turned and giving the viewer a steely gaze. The photos show off an incredible level of detail, from the texture of the jacket to the incredibl?e face sculpt. The statue also gets a cameo from Cammy's cat, which makes perfect sense to anyone who knows just how much she loves her feline friends.

The Prime 1 Studios Cammy 1/4 scale statue doesn't yet have a price point or release date, or details on included accessories, though details should be announced soon. Looking at the other releases in the line, fans can likely expect multiple head portraits to be included--as well as a price?? upwards of $1,000.

For fans looking for more, rest assured, Cammy is not the end of the line. Teases for statues of Marisa and Juri are already floating around on the Prime 1 website.

Katsuhiro Harada has been flooded with all sorts of requests to add things to Tekken 8. From character and crossover requests, his mentions are now being swarmed by requests?? for a Waffle House to be part of the game’s lineup of stages.

After being unable to dodge this request, Harada-san had to finally put his foot down and ask why people wanted this place to be a playable stage in Tekken 8. So, people ??broke down why exactly this should be in the game.

//twitter.com/Harada_TEKKEN/status/1774023083764199566

An ?X (formerly Twitter) user, Brian Smawley, or @ChefLuBu_ATL perfectly broke down why this iconic landmark should be in Bandai Namco’s latest fighting game. In a set of Tweets, he said the following:

  • 1. As many have noted it is a place where many many fights happen
  • 2. It's an iconic southern American diner, it's open for business 24/7 and that includes holidays. It is one of the most iconic businesses in the South.
  • 3. The staff there have to deal with a lot, including drunk people coming in after the bar or club and getting into fights, often those fights are recorded by bystanders.
  • 4. Sometimes people try to fight the staff and those people ALWAYS LOSE. Waffle House staff are hard.
  • 5. A waffle house stage can be anywhere in 50% of America. It lets you have a stage in America without tying it down to a specific state.
  • 6. The food is incredible, Harada-san

Brian Smawley

As someone who unfortunately does not live in a state where a Waffle House resides, some establishments are s??imilar to what this user described. I’ve been to places that fit into the aforementioned descriptors of a Waffle House.

Being a Southern California native, specifically in South Central Los Angeles, the kinds of Waffle Houses we have her??e are certain 24-hour diners, some chain fast food restaurants, or streetside Mexican food vendors who are out until 2 in the morning. They may not have your typical breakfast foods,?? but they sure do hit the spot.

Let me tell you, something alwa??ys goes down at night at these places. It starts with belligerent yelli??ng, followed by some physical altercation, and a decently high chance of a weapon being brandished and possibly used.

There are in fact, drunk patrons, or those on a bender w?ho need something cheap and quick to soak up all the heavy drinking to keep them going. The staff do have to deal with a lot but usually have a tight-knit community backing them in the case that they get involved in a physical altercation with disgruntled, overly inebriated customers, or people just looking for trouble.

And yes, the food is immaculate. I’m not entirely sure if it’s because I’ve had a long night out and any nourishment will be incredible or if it’s because I’m truly s??avoring food that might be my last meal (because of safety reasons).

But, if this stage were to become a reality in Tekken 8, it has to only be at night. Waffle Houses ?and other equivalent e?stablishments don’t become an anything-goes fighting ring until the dark hours of the day.

It would be a culturally hi??larious meme for Western folks who have heard the stories and lived to tell the tale of these dingy, yet iconic landmarks.

Though, with Harada now understanding what a Waffle House is, he did deliver some most likely unfortunate news. He goes on ?to say that the restaurant owns the trademark and rights to the name and image of the establishment. So, even if he proposes the idea of implementing this area in Tekken 8, it can be shot down if they don't accept it.

2023 was a hell of a year for fighting games, with Street Fighter 6, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and Mortal Kombat 1 all releasing. Now Tekken 8 is imminent, and that means it's time for the marketing to ??ramp ?up.

New character trailers have been dropping weekly, culminating in the 2023 Tekken World Tour, w?hich saw ??the opening for the upcoming Bandai Namco fighter released. However, it also announced the first wave of DLC, including a huge surprise character rejoining the ranks.

Eddy Gordo confirmed as Tekken 8's first DLC character

Announced at the end of the Tekken 8 opening movie, which was released on the Bandai Namco YouTube channel,? ?Tekken 3's Eddy Gordo will be the first round of Tekken 8 content.

Eddy is slated for a Spring 2024 release. Three other characters are also being teased for Tekk?en 8 Season 1. The names and?? specific release dates of those characters have yet to be announced.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzqvmFrV46c

Eddy is a fan-favorite who was one of the marquee characters of 1997's Tekken 3. He's a capoeira master who was falsely imprisoned for the murder of his father. Eddy breaks out of?? prison to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament to convince the Mishima Zaibatsu to help his quest for revenge, but he eventually learns Kazuya Mishima is his father's killer.

Since Tekken 3, Eddy has appeared in every game, though his appearances in Tekken 4 and 5 were limited to being a hidden character. For those games, Christi??e Monteiro was the resident capoeira fighter.

Eddy would return as a full-fledged fighter in Tekken 6, working alongside the Tekken Force with Kazuya's son, J??in Kazama. In Tekken 7, Eddy remains on the hunt for Kazuya, though his story mode sees him contending with Lucky Chloe instead.

For fans, Eddy's appearance is ??a welcome inclusion. Many had taken note in the months leading up to release that while Tekken 3 mainstays like Jin, Hwoarang, and Xiaoyu were in the g??ame, Eddy was missing.

Developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Tekken 8 is set six months after Tekken 7. The game promises to be the conclusion of the ongoing Mishima narrative, as it focuses on a final battle be??tween Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama.

Tekken 8 releases ??January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, an?d PC.

The folks at NetherRealm Studio showed up for the Brazilian CCXP expo, and they brought their first look at Quan-Chi. The sinister sorcerer is joining the Mortal Kombat 1? roster this year after being the co-big bad of the game's story mode.

Much like the Omni-Man trailer, Quan-Chi also shows off an upcoming Kameo, but a?? more literal cameo at the trailer's end may be the biggest surprise.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMQOKRhpc_s

Mortal Kombat 1 unleashes first Quan-Chi trailer, Peacemaker first look

The trailer shows off Quan-Chi in all his glory, including a particularly nasty fatality ??involving glass panes. The gameplay is as brutal as you would expect, but some of the shine is rubbed off by Quan-Chi's presence in the game's story mode.

Joining Quan-Chi is Khameleon, who is an interesting pick for longtime MK fans. Her last appearance was in the Nintendo Switch port of Mortal Kombat Armageddon, a game heavily referenced in Mortal Kombat 1's story mode. Khameleon made her debut as a hidden character in the N64 port of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Mortal Kombat 1 will mark her first appearance on a non-Nintendo console, as other versions of both MK Trilogy and MK Armageddon used the male-presenting Chameleon instead.

But the biggest surprise is the surprise cameo of Peacemaker at the end, teasing his imminent arrival as the next guest character. The short teaser also reveals the first of John Cena's voice acting for the role. Cena reprises the role from 2021's The Suicide Squad and the 2022 Max series Peacemaker.

Unfortunately, it's not all great news, as this will be another staggered release. Quan-Chi will be available in early access beginning December 14, 2023, while Khameleon won't be available until January 2024. Peacemaker has yet to receive an official date, but ?was previously announced to release in Winter 2023/2024.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Destructoid's own Steven Mills gave the game an 8/10, and we definite??ly think it's a game you should play, though it has been ??plagued with controversy surrounding its microtransactions practices.

With Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 releasing digitally in just a week, GameMill Entertainment has pulled back the curtain to reveal the title's overhauled campaign mode. In a newly launched trailer for the game, the single-player story is intriguingly called "??an epic roguelike campaign."

The crux of the campaign's story revolves around Danny Phantom's Vlad Plasimus as the villain "wreaks havoc across the Nickelodeon universe." To progress through the adventure, you'll have the option to choose different paths at key?? moments. Successful bouts lead you toward unlocking new characters and power-ups to aid you further along.

Outside of the campaign, we also got a glimpse at some other additions to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2's single-player content. A new Pop the Slime Balloons game is shown off which looks like an homage to Super Smash Bros.'s Break the Targets. There's also a Whack-a-bot mode that seems similar to Smash Bros.'s 100-Man Smash.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 will also feature a boss rush mode, with the trailer teasing numerous villains including SpongeBob SquarePants' Flying Dutchman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Shredder. Each of the single-player modes mentioned will have a speedrun optio???n as well so that players can compete for the fastest times.

With today's news, GameMill Entertainment also confirmed what's in store for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 DLC. The platform fig??hter will come equipped with 25 fighters at launch (14 returning, 11 new). But for those who need more, a $24.99 Season Pass will feature a four additional combat??ants.

The future DLC newcomers include Mr. Krabs, Rocksteady, Zuko, and Iroh, with Mr. Krabs planned to appear first in early 2024. There's also a Costume Pack that players can purchase for $19.??99 that includes a brand-new outfit for each character. Furthermore, GameMill notes that players can purchase "future individual DLC brawlers" with three costumes included for $6.99.

Due to the game's delay, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 will debut digitally on November 7 for Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Meanwhile, physical copies of the game will launch December 1. That said, note that the developers confirmed that the Nintendo Switch physical versio??n is just a co??de in a box.

The first Mortal Kombat 1?? DLC characters have fina??lly been showcased in a brand-new trailer.

While series creator Ed Boon had coyly stated they wouldn't be showing an Omni-Man gameplay trailer at New York Comic-Con, that didn't stop them from dropping the trailer online.

//twitter.com/MortalKombat/status/1713247980470599787

The trailer reveals Omni-Man, voiced by J.K. Simmons, confronting Liu Kang. Liu threatens Omni-Man to kick things off, promising that while Omni-Man has destroyed worlds, he has erased whole timelines.

That ??doesn't seem to phase Omni-Man, though, who gladly spends the trailer beating the absolute snot out of Liu Kang and Scorpion.

Omni-Man's release coincides with the return of Invincible to Amazon Prime Video, as well as the 20th anniversary of the Invincible comic. I??n the original story, Omni-Man is presented as a Superman pastiche whose son develops superpowers, taking the name Invincible. However, Omni-Man reveals he is actually on Earth to conquer it and hopes to do so with his son at his side.

There are, in fact, multiple nods to the comic included, especially his two fatalities, which reference him holding Invincible up to an oncoming train and Omni-Man's crushing of Red Rush's skull when he murdered Invincible's version of the Justice League.

In addition to Omni-Man, the trailer reveals the first DLC Kameo, Tremor. Originally debuting in the spin-off title Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, Tremor is now best known for his incredible redesign in Mortal Kombat X.

Omni-Man is slated for a November 2023 release. Future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC for the game includes The Boys' Homelander, Peacemaker, Quan-Chi, Ermac, and Takeda. Mortal Kombat 1 is available right now. We gave it an 8/10, so it's pretty safe to say you should check it ou??t.

Feng Wei first made his way into the Tekken series in 2005's Tekken 5. He's been playable in every subsequent ??entry, and now he's looking for a vengeful second shot at Leroy Smith. He suffered a major defeat at the hands of Leroy in the previous tournament. To make up for that loss, Nina Williams has offered Feng another op?portunity in exchange for his support of G Corp.

Trial by combat

For those interesting in trying out Feng Wei and Tekken 8, registrations are now open for the new Closed Beta Test. 19 characters will be available during the test, including the newly-announced Feng Wei. Players will get a chance to dig into cross-platform online matches, and will be among the first to try the new Tekken Fight Lounge.

This is essentially a lobby where players can interact, create custom avatars, set up matchmaking, and more. Among the spots you'll find within it are the Battle Area, Customization Shop, Tekken Dojo, and Beach. Tekken 3's ridiculous Tekken Ball mini-game is also back for anyone who wants to braw??l dodgeball-style.

You can check out the schedule and sign up here ahead of the test's October 20 kickoff. Tekken 8 is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, a?nd PC on January 26, 2024.

The release of Mortal Kombat 1 is nearly upon us! And, just in time for that, the official launch trailer has well, launched! Included in this most recent trailer is a special focus on historic fighters Reiko (who was introduced in Mortal Kombat 4) in addition to Shang Tsung, who is, interestingly, a pre-order bonus.

As the trailer begins, we hear narration from presumably Liu Kang, who has replaced Raiden as a god of the new timeline. He then utters the most ironic phrase I have ever heard in a game trailer, explaining that he “was free to craft a new era of peace,?followed by about three? minutes and forty-five seconds of pure, unbridled evisceration.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYa7L4jp11E

In the trailer, we are shown a preview of the carnage that Reiko can dish out. Taking advantage of the new Kameo Fighters system, he takes a step back while the Kameo Fighter dishes out a boatload of pain. Then, only after brutally shattering the enemy fighter’s leg, Reiko re-enters the fray by sending a giant spear through their chest, pulling it out, only to send it right into their skull. Era of peace? Riiight.

Shang Tsung, on the other hand, seems just as lethal â€?if not moreso. In addition to showing off his devastating combos against Liu Kang, the trailer seems to suggest he’s up to his usual shenanigans and will be a significant force against the characters of this franchise-wise universe reset. To reiterate, it’d seem despite his presence in the game’s story, Shang Tsung will only be playable for those who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1, which releases on September 14 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Ni??ntendo Switch.

I remember when Mortal Kombat launched in 1992, or rather, I remember when it was ported to consoles in 1993. I was six at the time, but it was impossible to avoid the media fervor around its ultra-violence. My parents didn’t bat an eye when I rented it. My mother’s reaction to seeing me play it was to just ask if it was tha?t game everyone was talking about. The??n she continued with her day.

That would normally be an extremely weak way to start talking about Mortal Kombat 1. The original Mortal Kombat (which we can no longer refer to as Mortal Kombat 1) was 11 Mortal Kombats ago.

Yet Mortal Kombat 1 seems somewhat keen to tap into nostalgia for the 0s, and there’s nothing I have more abundance of than 0s nostalgia. It seems aimed at lapsed fans and dilettantes like myself. Through the Kameo Fighters, we get to see some of the Kombatants as the??y appeared in the original trilogy. However, this grab for nostalgia proved rather confusing to my thumbs, which tried to throw combos from muscle memor??y, only to have them not work in the new system.

Those were $500 sunglasses

The beta weekend provided a decent way to get my feet wet with Mortal Kombat 1. It was enough to show my I’ve got a long way to go before I can compete at even the ?basest level. There’s a single-player tower mode, as well as a simple online versus. No practice mode, however. That really threw me.

It messed me up mostly because Mortal Kombat 1 doesn’t use a genre-typical combo system. In something like Street Fighter II, it’s mostly just a matter of finding out which moves flow best into each other. In Mortal Kombat 1, you need to dial-a-combo. You can view each combo in the movelist, which is helpful, but it means that if you fail a combo input, your character will throw a punch, then pau??se and wait for the studio audience to stop applauding before they’re primed to throw another.

This might be how it worked in the last couple of Mortal Kombat titles, but I only briefly played Mortal Kombat 11, so my memory is pretty hazy. It just felt extremely gluey to me, at first. If my mind ever wandered from keying in the inputs, I’d quickly be reminded of that by a sudden pummeling. It’s, uh, going to take some getting used to, I guess. Both online and offline, it started feeling like a sort of tug-of-war. One person would have the upper hand and would cycle through various moves and combos until they messed up an input or a combo breaker or a perfect block interrupted the??m.

Pajama day

The Kameo Fighters are kind of dopey in terms of implementation. In theory, they represent an entirely n??ew moveset, with you being able to change the attack by using direction input or charging. I guess this is something else I need practice on because, more often than not, my Kameo Character would rush in and either miss their attack or get interrupted by my fighter getting poked. They’d then stand awkwardly for a moment. They would look slightly embarrassed like they missed their cue. Then they’d just turn and run back offscreen.

Mostly, they served to add a little personality to grabs and Fatal Blows. And then they also pose with your fighter at the end, which is also a little strange when it co?mes to the original trilogy characters. Your fighter is in their overdesigned, color-coordinated outfit, while the Kameo wears their best pajama??s and hockey gear. Not that I really mind since I’m kind of happy to see a bit of self-aware ridiculousness alongside all the gore.

Big flex

The beta provides a handful of playable fighters and a?nother smal??l set of Kameos. I started off with my familiar main of Sub-Zero, but after a playthrough where I discovered he lacks a classic uppercut, I wound up trying out Li Mei. Likewise, I started off playing with the Kameo of Frost, but changed to Jax because I like his cigar-chomping style.

The single-player towers were no problem for me, even on their harder difficulty. However, my win/loss ratio online was dismal. I got a few successes under my belt, but it often felt like I was the only person on the internet who was unable to internalize the dial-a-combo system. I often fell back on the special moves and grabs, which obviously didn’t work out all that well. That’s not necessarily a condemnation of Mortal Kombat 1, at all. But I do have a long way to go t??o co??mpete.

A few people I’ve spoken with about the game have said they mostly play Mortal Kombat games for the story. Unfo??rtunately, it’s not real?ly shown off in the beta. A few fighters, some Kameos, and a couple of levels. Not really surprising, but worth mentioning.

Konsider this

On??line worked fine, though. I didn’t get much opportunity to scrutinize it too hard, but I didn’t really get any visible lag, and the matchmaking worked quickly.

As it stands, however, I’m neither more nor less excited for Mortal Kombat 1. The biggest blow to my enthusiasm was finding out that Sheeva probably isn’t going to be in the launch roster. Otherwise, I didn’t really expect it to re-invent the fighting genre or push Mortal Kombat into a new era. Mostly, I expected it to compete with current forerunners, like Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter 6, and the upcoming Tekken 8. Sure, I can see it doing that.

If there’s one thing I wish, it would be that it would find a more unique aesthetic. Its gore-covered Hollywood blockbuster look is fine, but since we’re already bringing back the 0s look of some fighters, that could have been pushed hard. Why is there a flatscreen on the wall of the tea house? That should be a CRT. And maybe put an original Mortal Kombat arcade machine in the background of Johnny Cage’s penthouse. Liu Kang remade the entire universe. He should have transported it back to the most magical time of all?. I’m an easy target.

The best stages of fighting games transport us to an exciting arena. It could be a stunning wilderness, a ruckus crowd, or?? an ancient temple. What's most important is how they set the tone of the fight and if the intractable nature of the stage is well suited to a fighting game.? Let's hear the roar of the crowd and get stuck in on what makes an exciting fighting game stage.

The stunning setting from stages of fighting games

Arguably, the most important element is the graphics of each stage. There's always a balance between being too simple and too distracting. For example, I hate it when pro fighting game players always pick the plain white training stages during EVO or local meetups that take me out of the experience. On the other side of the coin, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Des?tination has way too much going i??n the background that keeps me off focus.

The best fighting game stages have enough flair to be entertaining but not too still to the point of boredom. Duomo di Sirio is one of my favorites from Tekken 7, for example. There's not a ?lot going on in the background, but there's an elegance to the European-inspired setting. There are sculptures in the background and illustrative architectural touches that make it stand out. As the battle continues, you can punch your foe off the balcony, giving a more dynamic feel to the fight. The stage's music is also exhilarating.

Bustling or serene, fighting game stages can fit different qualities

Additionally, the best stages show the environment's culture perfectly. Street Fighter 2's Shopping District depicts a bustling Chinese market. There's a cyclist rolling down beside the fight as a chicken flaps its wings inside a cage, a woman is washing her hands in a bowl, and meat is hung up by hooks. To give a more recent example, Street Fighter 6's Fete Foraine presents a stunning Parisian night. The Eiffel Tower ??is glowing in the background of a market filled with a clown, food stalls, and a spinning ride. There are also people enjoying their food on red and white cloth tables. Capcom does a great job of detailing its stages with all sorts of references and cultural reflections of each environment.

If you want a stage that's more serene, take a look at Genbu Temple, also in Street Fighter 6. It's not populated with onlookers to the?? fight, but the slight monochromatic styling of the stage next to the pink blossom trees is so striking. Awesome stages can take different forms.

Cinematic stages

NetherRealm's recent fighting game output has provided interactive stages. They're cool because your environment presents a new layer of strategy to each bout. In Injustice: Gods Among Us, you're able to bounce off a car's hood to get out of the corner or ride a motorcycle into your opponent in Wayne Manor. There's even the option to smash The Joker's face into the car. You can also launch your opponent out of the arena with an impressively detailed c??inematic cutscene.

Meanwhile, Dragon Ball FighterZ impresses anime and fighting game fans alike with its thrilling animations that seem ripped straight from t?he show. One critical element of the stages in this game is how they can crumble around you. If you use a powerful ability, the environment is wiped out, adding believability to the intense cutscenes that play beforehand.

The music

While some games focus more on the character themes nowadays, each stage's music is important in capturing excitement in a fanbase. While Jin and Heihachi are simply fighting o?n a shallow ocean floor and nothing else, the "Infinite Azure" track is spectacular. The beats are addicting and maintain an intense tempo, but there remains a calm tranquil tone that's refreshing to listen to. It features a few surprises in the composition, like a heavier emphasis on the pe?rcussion mid-song. Without this music, it would be a dull yet beautiful stage to fight in.

Going back to Dragon Ball FighterZ, "West City" retains the upbeat yet heavy sta??kes of battle. The deep bass, strings-focused melody, and then the horns all make for an epic theme while you're fighting against the likes of Tien, Cell, and Goku. While the environments show an accurate recreation of West City from the anime, the music truly makes it a fantastic stage I go back to over and over again.

You cannot talk about great fighting game stage music without mentioning "Jazzy NYC" from Street Fighter III: Third Strike. The deeper cymbal section at the beginning represents a hip-hop energy as you enter New York City. The theme is lively and has you bobbing your head up and down. The jazzy saxophone-like MIDI has an amazing solo in the middle of the song that just exudes energy. It's one of, if not the, most popular stage theme in Street Fighter history. If the music is right, it will e?mphasize the stage's vibe perfectly.

What are your favorite fighting games stages?

There are so many fantastic fighting game stages out there. I personally have a soft spot for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale's novelty approach to mixing two games into one area, like God of War and Ratchet & Clank in Metropolis. There's also the majesty of Tekken 5's Moonlit Wilderness with its gorgeous mo?onlit sky and flowers that glow from it??s light; it has an epic theme with it, making this stage the ultimate package. What are your favorite fighting game stages?
