GTA modder makes playable GTA 6 map and clashes with Take-Two after surprise takedown

Modder Dark Space received a YouTube strike for his map video and is now done with GTA.

We know Rockstar is keeping almost everything about GTA 6 a secret, except for the first official trailer. But now, they seem focused on taking down fan speculation as wellജ.

Recently, a creator named Dark Space was creating a GTA 5 map to look like a playable, speculated GTA 6 map using details from the trailer and unconfirmed leaks about the upcoming game. The mod was intended to be completely free and involved collaboration with other modders to have a playable version ready before GTA 6’s official release this fall.

However, a video that DarkSpace posted showing the map and interviewing other modders was taken down with a copyright strike by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company.

In a new video, Dark Space explained that he believed his original video was taken down because his map was becoming too accurate, which made Take-Two feel threatened. However, he mentioned his main issue wasn’t just the takedown itself, but the method used.

“I literally went into [the map project] accepting they most likely would not want it up, because the project is too on-the-nose using leak coordinate data,” Dark Space said.

“I do, however, have a problem with them using the YouTube strike system against my channel. That’s my livelihood. You go after that, you’re going after not just after my mod, but you’re going after my family. These lawyers couldn’t even send a simple email first?”

Dark Space says he primarily earns money through YouTube videos, not from mods, and that his plan with the mod was to bui💙ld something for the GTA community while monetizing his videos about it, not by monetizing the mod.

“I literally have no complaints about them saying they don’t want me to make that map, it’s how they go about it that’s disrespectful,” Dark Space added. “While legally fine, how about morally? This kind of reaction kills the creativity and passion that makes GTA’s community what it is.”

Rockstar has a history of going after GTA modders

Dark Space isn’t officially connected to Rockstar, so his work wasn’t actually based on real GTA 6 files — it was simply an educated guess from available footage a𒐪nd leaks. He was just skilled enough to create a convincing and playabl🍸e version using his modding expertise.

Rockstar likely took action because the mod became too realistic and accurate. This isn’t the first time Rockstar has aggressively protected the GTA franchise by targeting fan-created mods. The company shut down the massive Liberty City mod, and years ago it already reportedly sent private investigators to a modder’s house.
