How to complete Help the Cursed Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3

Laughter is not, in this case, the best medicine.

There are all kinds of magical items in Baldur’s Gate 3, but only one amulet seems to follow you from one end of Faerûn to another. Here’s how to help out a very Cursed Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3 find some solace (or not).

You can first stumble upon this side quest in Act 1, through the Adamantine Forge. While you might pick it up here, you’ll have to cover said item all the way to Baldur’s Gate in Act 3, where you can finally help the amulet’s inhabitant find closure.

Where to find the Sentient Amulet in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can♏ discover the Sentient Amulet in the Adamantine Forge on the Grymforge map, part of the Underdark section of Act 1. A patrolling Lava Elemental 🅷will cause a lot of trouble for you, so I recommend using some ranged spells to poke and prod at it from the safe, high ground.

After taking out the Elemental, have one party member make their way across, either hopping or using Misty Step. You’ll find the Sentient Amulet among the treasures located in the center of the lava pool.

Once you pick it up, you’ll initiate a conversation with the cursed monk inside this strange Baldur’s Gate 3 accessory. He’s been cursed to a lifetime of laughter, has basically become the Ghost Joker, and needs your help. Resist his infectious laughter and agree to help him reach a certain Shirra Clarwen in Baldur’s Gate.

Where to deliver the Sentient Amulet

Once you reach Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 and can access the Open Hand Temple in Rivington, you can finish the quest. Head down into the crypt, where you might already be headed for another quest, and you’ll find Shirra’s body in a sarcophagus.

Open it, as the amulet bids you to, and the spirit will leap out of the talisman and into the body. (Note: We’ve seen some anecdotes of people having issues with this interaction. If you can’t get the ghost to go into Shirra’s body, try reloading your game.)

The cursed monk wanted to pass off his laughter, it seems, in order to appease Shirra’s god of choice Ilmater. Without the predestined target, the monk sets his sights on you. Get ready for a tussle with some dead bodies.

This should be a pretty easy fight for you, at this stage in the game. It’s four zombies with relatively low firepower, compared to all the enemies you’ve just recently fought on the way to Baldur’s Gate. Take them out, and you’re left with a choice; inherit the Tasha’s Hideous Laughter skill at the cost of your stats, or deny it. I chose the latter, but the option’s here either way.

Now that the cursed monk is delivered, you’re all done with this Baldur’s Gate 3 side quest spanning several acts.
