The Making of Karateka feels like an evolution in re-releasing older games. While Karateka itself might be a tough sell in today’s market, Digital Eclipse contextualized it using a tonne of behind-the-scenes footage, documents, and interviews. With this added context, it’s a lot easier to appreciate the game in the spotlight. Beyond that, it also provides great insight into not just the rigors of game development but the business a𒈔s it was at the time.

The Making of Karateka was advertised as the first in their Gold Master Series (though it followed the foundation they set with Atari 50). No other titles have been officially revealed. I can definitely think of more than a few that I’d like to le🌟arn more about.

The𒐪 developer was recently acquired by Atari, who has seemingly pivoted to the business of game preservation and has suggested an eagerness to work with Digital Eclipse on similar projects. The chances that the subject this time will be a game from Atari’s history is definitely greater than zero. At the same time, it might not be.

We’ll have to wait and see at Day of the𒉰 Devs 💃The Game Awards Edition on December 6, 2023.
