Nintendo Switch 2’s mystery C button is a Discord-like chat feature in your console

Get ready for that 10fps game streaming.

Ever since Nintendo teased the Switch 2, there’s been a lot of speculation over the mysterious C button on the right Joy-Con. Well, we finally know what it is, and it ain’t pretty.

As it turns out, the C button stands for Chat, and it allows you to access a new Game Chat feature on the Switch 2. By pressing it, you can hop into a chat with up to four other friends and play games together. This doesn’t just apply to multiplayer games. During the Direct, we saw how players could also share their screens, allowing everyone to see what you’re doing in-game at the same time.

The interface itself looks very similar to Discord’s own server streaming feature, where multiple users can hop into a voice channel and share their screens simultaneously. It’s worth noting, however, that the Direct footage absolutely did not do Game Chat any favors. The gameplay from the other players looked really choppy, likely because streaming your game to others on the Switch 2 requires a stable internet connection. And if you’re doing it over Wi-Fi instead of a wired/LAN connection, the results probably aren’t gonna be all that great.

For the concerned parents out there, rest assured that Game Chat will also come with parental controls. You can use the Nintendo Switch mobile app to control who you talk to on Game Chat, and you can set it such that the app will always require your permission before you actually start talking. Conversely, it’s also possible to set permissions for specific users so you don’t have to jump through the same hoops every time you want to hop into a Game Chat session with them.

Finally, Nintendo also announced a first-party microphone that you can connect to the top USB-C port for better mic and voice quality. In addition to that, the Switch 2’s new Pro Controller will also come with the C button for easy access to Game Chat.

Overall, Game Chat is a great feature that helps the Switch 2 be a more social and multiplayer-friendly console. I’d probably stick with just voice chat and pass on the actual game streaming feature, though.
