Overwatch 2 adds yet another currency, this time for Mythic skins

Currencies: 6. Campaigns: 0.

A sixth currency is being added to Overwatch 2. Alongside Credits, Coins, League Tokens, Competitive Points, and Legacy Competitive points, we now have Mythic Prisms. Much like the heralding of a new playable hero, Mythic Prisms have joined the game’s growing roster of convoluted currency.

The cost of Mythic Prisms

This new currency is earnable in-game through the $10 Premium track of the Battle Pass and are spent on, predictably, Mythic Skins and their upgrades. You may already know that unlocking a Mythic Skin for a hero is just the start – if you want all the juicy customizations you’ll need to upgrade it as well. Every Mythic Skin has four upgrade levels, and Mythic Prisms translate to these unlocks as follows:

If you play throughout the season, you will earn exactly enough Prisms through the Battle Pass to fully buy and level one Mythic Skin (that being 80 Mythic Prisms, unlocked from Tier 8 – 78). Unlike before, you won’t be restricted to whatever Mythic Skin the current season has you unlocking, and you’re free to spend these as you choose. The catch, of course, is that if you want more than one skin in a season, you’re going to have to either wait or fork up a pretty penny. Let’s look at the, frankly absurd, exchange rates:

Mythic PrismsRetail Price
10$9.99 USD
50$39.99 USD
100$79.99 USD

So, to unlock a fully leveled Mythic Skin, you’re looking at spending $79.99 for enough Prisms, or about $64 for the exact amount needed (if we want to get pedantic). That’s enough to make the Diablo 4 in-game shop blush. This is all without mentioning that the current Mythic Skin (Mercy, this season), is only available during the season, and will then rotate out for the following two seasons. Even this brand-new system has built in FOMO!

So, you can earn 80 Prisms from the $10 Premium Battle Pass, use them, then do it all again next season. But for those of us who don’t play each season and may want to fill out our collection, we’re always going to be running behind, earning enough to get one skin per season but never enough to fill out a backlog. If you missed out on multiple seasons, your options are to whip out your credit card or kick rocks. They’re only cosmetics, sure, but fighting FOMO with finance never feels good.
