This is Battle Slots, a new title from Phantom EFX releasing for PC April 19th and making its way to consoles sometime later. The game appears to be taking a page from the Puzzle Quest playbook in that it’s using a casual game concept and applying RPG elements to it.
What I rather like is that there’s no pretense of skill shown here in the spinning of the reels. I’m sure there is a ton of strategy involved in character growth and equipment management. But, unlike in Puzzle Quest, the random nature of combat isn’t disguised by a game mechanic where you’re given some measure of input that, at best, still winds up dependent on whatever the game decides to drop in the playfield next.
It just seems more honest this way. I wonder if it’s as much fun.
