We’re friends, right? I can be honest with you. I know it. I was going to follow up my earlier list, 10 bad games you should play, with a similar list around the same time of year. However, I don’t have a kusoge chambe?red for today, so Im bumping it to a?? year-end list.

Do you know how difficult it is to play a bad game every week? Not just finding, playing through, and then writing up while also covering other responsibilities, but the mental toll it takes on a person. So, even though the column is informally called “Weekly Kusoge?(not related to Hardcore Gaming 101’s “Your Weekly Kusoge?, I skip a week wh??enever playing?? bad games just isn’t enough motivation to get out of bed.

With that in mind, I did 36 Weekly Kusoge articles in 2023. Here ??are the 10?? “best?games I covered this year.

Castlevania Legacy of Darkness Henry

Award for At Least Being Interesting - Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness

I covered Castlevania 64 and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness back-to-back to show some love for the series?more maligned attempts at 3D translation. And really, I can understand why they haven’t been ported, but their reputation as blotches on the series?record is maybe not as apt. At the very least, they’re more interesting than, say, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Legacy of Darkness is sort of the updated version of the vanilla N64 Castlevania. It includes the narrative campaigns of the earlier game, improving some things, but cutting a few features due to space. Personally, I think it’s still better??, but there are some who prefer the original or, alternatively, suggest you should play both. That latter point, I can agree with.

Award for Kusoge that I Love - Paperboy (64)

Going into the article, I already knew that I liked the N64’s 1999 revisit to Midway’s Paperboy series. You shouldn’t be ashamed that a bad game can click with you. It’s not a matter of whethe??r or not you can recognize the flaws alongside the strengths. Kusoge can be meaningful. Behind all the broken mechanics and unfulfilled ambitions, there is still human expression that can be connected with.

For the 3D update, Paperboy captures the bizarrely dark world presented in the arcade original and g?ives it a unique??ly lo-fi art style and weirdly enjoyable music, then dumps a bunch of technical limitations on them. But all the fog and audio compression in the world could stop it from being an infectiously bright experience.

Guns in Final Fight

Award for Biggest Dumb - Final Fight: Streetwise

A sad swansong to Capcom Studio 8, Final Fight: Streetwise was reportedly mired in development difficulties before being released in a poor state. The developer originally had a more vibrant game planned that would be more t?rue to the classic arcade original, but marketing allegedly wanted something more marketable. Ergo, a game that was like what was popular at the time: gritty and edgy.

The result is something that is just so, so dumb. As I described it, “an edgy teenager’s take on Yakuza.?The story has Kyle Travers trying to save his brother, Cody (from the original), from drug addiction. The enemies? They’re also addicts, but the inhuman kind, I guess, so they can eat buckshot. It’s that sort of daftness that makes Final Fight: Streetwise constantly entertaining, even when t??he gameplay is a letdown.

Tecmo's Deception Wizbone

Award for Most Brilliant Kusoge - Tecmo’s Deception

There were a few commenters who were ardently offended that I referred to Tecmo’s Deception as kusoge, ?even though it’s one that I really enjoyed. Listen, I’m sorry if it upsets y??ou, but the game is just an endless parade of “good enough fixes?and blatant failures. Being entertaining doesn’t stop it from being an oversimplification of complex ambitions.

On the other hand, it does feature some great atmosphere and a wizard named Wizbone. There’s a lot in Tecmo’s Deception that I wish was built upon, fixed, and refined for the sequels, but instead, the developers went in a mostly different direction. I’m not saying the sequels are bad (I hav??en’t played them), but the spots of brilliance in otherwise bad games are still worth preserving.

DinoRex mealtime

Award for Most Lovable Train Wreck - DinoRex

DinoRex is like Primal Rage if it were acted out in a playground sandbox using bargain-bin toys. It has dinosaurs fighting each other, but they appear more like toothless pugs fighti??ng over a hotdog. Incredible. Just incredible.

It plays horribly, with unresponsive cont?rols, bad hit detection, and a senseless lack of depth. But then it gives you a bonus round where your portly pal gets to march through a modern city, and all is forgiven.

The Genji and the Heike Clans little mode

Award for Most Compelling Torture - The Genji and the Heike Clans

You and I could sit down with The Genji and the Heike Clans (Genpei Toma Den as it’s called in Japan) and j??ust rattle off all the things about the game that just doesn’t work. It has major issues like its sloppy “big mode,?cobbled-together platforming, and its horribly unfriendly difficulty curve. Despite this, it is a somewhat-be??loved game in its home country of Japan.

I’m really not sure I get why. I don’t think this is like Spelunker where it’s considered kusoge, but still sells well. I don’t think Genpei Toma Den is considered kusoge over there at all. And yet, I can’t see it as anything but. Yet, despite that, I find it intensely charming. It’s very unique in its hostility, and the culture shock of its themes based on Japanese history and folklore just highlight that. Forget that it isn’t much fun to pl??ay. There just isn’t much like it.

Mad Panic Coaster after Crash

Award for Artistic Merit - Mad Panic Coaster

I described Mad Panic Coaster as a cross between F-Zero and a rail shooter. You play as a pair of children who are strapped into a per??ilous roller coaster, and you have to keep them on track while also eliminating h??azards in front of you by throwing bombs. It’s madness. It’s way too fast for its own good, and I had a lot of trouble putting it down.

What was most compelling for me, however, was that it seemed to have come from nowhere before just disappearing into obscurity. The company that supposedly developed it was an advertising business that very briefly touched on video games. Yet, Mad Panic Coaster isn’t an advertisem??ent. Instead, it’s an aesthetically well-executed and strangely fun game that is built on a nauseatingly unique premise. It’s not the best game (it’s on this list, after all), but the tangible passion behind its creation makes it worth playing.

Super Monkey Daibouken - Fight Scene

The Kyuukyoku no Kusoge Award - Ganso Saiyuuki Super Monkey Daibouken

Sometimes referred to as the “kyuukyoku no kusoge?or “ultimate crappy game,?Ganso Saiyuuki Super Monkey Daibouken was something I had to play for myself ever since it was featured in GameCenter CX’s “Ring Ring Tactics?segment. It’s a game that is so ineptly designed that it defies comprehension. To challenge myself, I played through it using only the tips that callers had given host Shinya Arino in GameCenter CX.

I did wind up completing it, which just consummated my love of kusoge. This year, I felt something snap in my brain that gave me the ability to just unironically love bad games. Super Monkey Daibouken is probabl??y what caused me t?o break inside. It has elevated me to a higher plane of thought. Or a lower one.

Big Gorilla and Ray

The So Bad, It's Good Award - Escape from Bug Island

Speaking of being broken inside, Escape from Bug Island ??is a game that has been living in?? my head since the early days of the Wii. The only thing I knew about it was it was apparently a very bad game, so I had to circle back and play it.

What?? I didn’t expect was such a hilariously bad set of characters going through an absolutely terrible narrative. I also didn’t expect such sexy lizard ladies, so that was a bonus. However, Ray, the lady friend he single-mindedly drool over, and his shotgun-phile friend all won my heart. I just can’t believe this is a real game. Simply captivating.

Cool Riders Cool Jump

The Actually Awesome Kusoge Award - Cool Riders

Cool Riders is like Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game: it looks like kusoge, but it’s built over the bones of a great game, so it manages to be fun to play. But while the bizarrely composed assembly of photo-manipulated actors and scenery make the game look like it was ??pulled? from the murky depths of a bargain bin, it comes together in a hilarious and fascinating way.

In what is essentially Outrunners on various motorcycles, you cruise across a world that resembles a travel magazine after it has been eaten by a camel. The world whips by you at light speed, but it’s impossible to look away as you might miss some of the bizarre scenery. It looks like the dumbest game imagina??ble, but when you actually accept it into your heart, it w??ill block up all your blood vessels and drag you down inside to spend eternity. I mean, you should play it.

Wrap it up

Maybe it's just my brainworms talking, but I definitely think you should play bad games. Video games are a lot like cheese. A lot of people ?most people, probably ?will stick to the cheddars and swiss of the world, and maybe if they're feeling adventurous, they'll try a gouda. Some are even happy just eating pre-packaged American cheeses. Anything wi??th a recognized brand, probably one that is mass-produced, and that's as far as they'll go.

But if you really want to connect with cheese ?if you're truly a lover of cheese ?you expl?ore. You try artisan cheeses, aged cheese, and cheese from animals aside from cows. You eat the moldy kinds, the smelly stuff, and every once in a while, it can be extremely unpleasant. Eventually, the unpleasantness doesn't matter because it's not about eating cheese, but exploring the complexity of its flavor. Normal cheese becomes boring to you, but at that point, it doesn't matter. The passion you've built and discovered is more fulfilling and meaningful, and your life is enriched because of it.

Playing kusoge gives you perspective. It enhances your connection with the medium and lends it depth and meaning. You most certainly can stick to the supermarket cheese aisle and eat out of bags of pre-grated chedda?r, or you can travel outside your comfort zone and gain a true appreciation of cheese. I mean video games. I'm hungry.

PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch have had their 2023 year-in-reviews go live ?apps that tell you just how much time you’ve spent engulfed in the gelatinous mass that is video games ?now it’s Steam’s turn. Through the Steam application or by signing into the website, you can get a write-up of your year spent on the?? p??latform.

Except it won’t? tell you your overall time played.

No. What it will tell you is how much of your mysterious overall time h??as been spent in each game. It will also tell? you what your preferred genres are, how many achievements you unlocked, and how much time was spent using a mouse versus a keyboard.

But enough about you, let’s talk about me.

This year, Steam has me clocked at having played 167 games, with 121 of them being new. To me, it’s surprising that Baldur’s Gate 3 is my highest-played game, considering I don’t feel like I’m very far into it. Following that is Against the Storm and Draft of Darkness, so at least? my playtime is focused on my favorite games of the year. My lo?ngest streak of days playing on the platform was 27.

Steam 2023 year in review Zoey Adzuken

The year-in-review also compares you against the median for people on the platform. Considering that Steam is also used by “normal?people who can pay for their own insurance, the median is laughably far below what I “achieved.?/p>

The spider graph showing my favorite genres is most fascinating to me. Roguelike Deckbuilders and Open World Survival Crafting are at the top, which is funny, because I don’t particularly like those genres. Vampire and cyberpunk make more sense. However, combat racing and naval warfare are oddly specific. Naval warfare was probably Waves of Steel, but what combat racing? My Summer Car?

So let me know what yours looks like. Did you do some exploration into the PC’s back catalog, or did you stick with the popular new releases? Was your time spread across a pile of games, or did you spend it all with a few favorites? Did you make it past Act One in Baldur's Gate 3?

If you are interested in knowing how much time you’ve spent this year on Steam, there are third-party sites that will dive into your stats. While Steamtime.info will only tell you your overall time, I believe mysteamgauge.com will allow you to drill down further. I’d confirm this, but the site is more or less unresponsive to me right now, possibly because of all the year-end shenanigans going on?? right no??w.

This year brings multiplayer, new characters, and more

Disney's Dreamlight Valley has taken over my free time. I was looking for a cozy new simulator to play, and so far this title has ticked all the boxes for me. I found it to be a bummer that I was nearing the end of all of the content released as of now, so I was waiting with bated breath to hear any news about what's to come. My prayers have finally been answered, because Gameloft just laid out their plans for their free updates in 2023, as reported by GameSpot. This year has a ton in store for the game, including a multiplayer mode, ne??w characters, realms, clothing, motifs, decorations, and furniture.

First up in February, the game will be welcoming two new villagers: Mirabel from Encanto and Olaf from Frozen. We'll also be able to "discover the secrets of the Frosted Heights biome," which likely means that we'll get some more quests surrounding the Vall??ey itself that will reveal more details about the Forgetting. The Star Path event in February will also celebrate Disney's 100th anniversary.

[caption id="attachment_359723" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Gameloft[/caption]

The April announcement teases a new realm, some new characters, and "more surprises," and features a picture of the beloved Lion King protagonist, Simba. ??April's Star Path will be celebrating Disney Parks ?not really sure what this means but I'm down for it. Early summer promises a big story event, and a new princess' arrival to the Valley. For the rest of the year, we can look forward to the addition of multiplayer, as well as the rest of the aforementioned content like clothes and furniture. Some bug fixes and quality-of-life changes have also been announced, like further streamlining recipe and inventory systems, and sprinklers to help water your crops.

Finally, when the game's lead producer Manea Castet was asked if we'll be seeing any Star Wars or Marvel characters coming to the Valley anytime soon, apparently he dodged the question. I don't know, I'm getting the sense that my prediction is correct, and eventually we will see familiar faces from the extended Disney universe making their way into Dreamlight Valley. We w??on't know for sure until Gameloft makes an official announcement, but it's ?fun to speculate for now.

It's that time of year again

With the New Year ahead of us, and everyone's 2022 GOTY awards locked in, we're looking forward to the incredible lineup of games that will be releasing in 2023. We've set our sights on what the next year has in store, not just for our normal lives, but for the games industry as well, and there's some awesome stuff on the horizon. Whether they're sequels to our favorite franchises, or new properties altogether, it's all there, and it's gonna be tough to choose what we want to play first. I'll admit that it'll be a bit sad to say goodbye to the year that included the unadulterated joy surrounding Trombone Champ or the mind-boggling beauty of Immortality, but a?ll good things must come to an end, I guess.

As we do every year, we've rounded up our writers to ask which games they're most anticipating in 2023. One of the things I love most about Destructoid is that everyone on our site runs of the gambit of different backgrounds and tastes, so for posts like these, we get a huge variety of genres and vibes represented. If you're looking for any recommendations for the coming months, or simply want to see if any of us share in the excitement for your favorite upcoming release, check out this list ?we've got pretty much all of the bases covered! ?Noelle Warner

Hades II

Noelle Warner: Hades II

My highlight of all the Game Awards announcements in December was absolutely Supergiant's reveal of Hades IIHades is still one of my favorite and most-played games of all time, because it was one of those games that feels like it was made for me. The Greek mythology setting, the chara??cter art, the colors, the music ?it felt like they tapped into my brain and figured out exactly what I wanted. It's also been an influential title for me when it comes to how I approach gameplay because it was the first time I really challenged myself and invested a lot of time and effort to mechanically get a lot better at the game. I ended up beating 32 heat before signing off at around 350 hours, but it's a game I still think about years later.

Hence my overwhelming enthusiasm when I saw the Supergiant logo come up on the screen. While the game will maintain the Greek myth setting that we know and love, we're getting a whole new cast of characters, including a new protagonist: Melinoë, who is actually Zagreus' sister. I'm looking forward to seeing what t??he developers carry over from the first game, and what they add on to enhance the experience. Either way, this is the first time Supergiant has ever made a sequel to one of their games, and if they're willing to start now, I have to believe that it's for a good reason.

Baldur's Gate 3

Eric Van Allen: Baldur's Gate 3

This is a legitimately difficult question because next year looks stacked. We have a new Zelda, a new Bethesda RPG, a new Final Fantasy, and even more. But all of that has paled in comparison thanks to Baldur's Gate 3.

In some ways, I'm really glad I didn't hold off on the Early Access for Baldur's Gate 3. The pedigree is certainly there, as Larian has proven itself a few times over with the Divinity series. With Baldur's Gate 3, though, the studio is firing on all cylinders. There's a fantastic party of companions, a malleable and strategic battle system, and some solid story beats already present in the first chunks of Act 1. The actual role-playing is engaging, too; as virtual RPGs have been incorporating more and more ideas from their tabletop counterparts, Baldur's Gate 3 is capturing all the grandeur of a deep, intense campaign and giving the player a ton of?? ways to manipulate it. Pushing the plot off a cliff feels fantastic.

Picking up the torch of one of the most well-remembered series in western RPG history can't be easy. But Larian isn't pulling back on the bat with this one, and I'm hoping we see it knocked out of the park when Baldur's Gate 3 lands sometime next August.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

CJ Andreissen: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Honestly, I feel kind of bad going with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. As a writer for a gaming website, we get a lot of emails from publishers and developers asking us to include their games on lists like these. And really, the last thing a mega AAA title like this needs is more free publicity from the jackwagons like me. I should be using this space to write about Loop 8 or Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord or Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2, which was originally going to be my pick. But I’d be fooling myself if I wrote about any other title in this spot. Because following Final Fantasy VII Remake, there is nothing I want more in the world than to see where this reimagining of Final Fantasy VII goes.

Brett Medlock: The Wolf Among Us 2

It’s kind of a miracle The Wolf Among Us 2 is even in development. As I’m sure you know, the original Telltale Games doesn’t exist anymore. A brand new team under the same name took over the reins of this fan-favorite IP. That alone is scary, but I’m happy they’re taking a swing at it. The Wolf Among Us 1 was in??????????????????????????credible and ended ??on such a major cliffhanger; I’d rather a new team continue the story than get nothing at all.

Thankfully, the first official trailer for the sequel that Telltale shared earlier this year did not disappoint. The art direction retains the exquisite comic book style but offers much more detail in the environments and character models. Not to mention the fact that the performance looked silky smooth in the trailer, an area previous Telltale games lacked in. Adam Harrington is also back as Bigby Wolf. So far, on all accounts, the new Telltale looks to be respecting the original game on all fronts, while also showcasing some exciting new elements.

I can’t wait to see how Snow and Bigby’s relationship is handled in The Wolf Among Us 2. For now, there’s no release window aside from a big? ol??023? Let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later!

Timothy Monbleau: Final Fantasy XVI

Once upon a time, Final Fantasy set the standard for all console RPGs. When a new game in the series came out, anyone making RPGs took notes to copy its success. This trend tapered off after Final Fantasy X, and now the series is in a full-blown identity crisis. Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels were massively divisive. Final Fantasy XIV was so bad at launch that its remnants still haunt it years later. And Final Fantasy XV wasn’t even originally intended as a numbered Final Fantasy!

For me, Final Fantasy XVI is a do-or-die moment for the series. Naoki Yoshida and Creative Business Unit III hold nearly all the goodwill this series has, and they have a lot riding on this title. Optimistically, this is the team to get Final Fantasy back on track. Final Fantasy XIV has successfully intertwined nostalgia for the classic games with fresh new ideas, and this approach could make Final Fantasy XVI a trendsetter we haven’t seen since the PS2. Pessimistically, Square Enix is a mess. Between multiple live service failures and a ridiculous fixation with NFTs, it’s like the company is trying to speedrun its own demise so Sony can buy them out o?f pit??y.

I don’t know if Final Fantasy XVI will be my favorite game of next year, but I’m deeply curious to see how it’ll turn out. I’ve had an incredible time playing Final Fantasy XIV, so I want to believe Final Fantasy XVI will be the one to get me excited for single-player Final Fantasy games again. If Creative Business Unit III isn’t just an MMO one-trick pony and upper management can get out of its own way, I think Final Fantasy XVI can pull it off. Otherwise?well, maybe they can get Tomoya Asano to rebrand the next Bravely Default as Final Fantasy XVII.

Pikmin 4

Zoey Handley: Pikmin 4

At this point, I've been anticipating Pikmin 4 for so long, I don't feel I could rightly choose anything else. It was first announced back during the Wii U days, where we were told it was totally ?almost done. Then we were later told that, yeah, Nintendo was just waiting for the right time. Now we're deep into Switch territory, and finally, we're being told that it's going to drop.

Of course, despite the protracted development period, the only information we have to go on is that there will be a new camera angle. You know what? That's a good start. I'm not a fan of the top-down perspective. I think having it lower to the ground can only increase the wonderment of being a tiny being in a big world. As for what ??I'm hoping for; I'd like to see co-op make a return. I also want to see the purple Pikmin back with more prominence in your ranks.

Now whether or not it actually makes the 2023 release period is up in the air. Nintendo can be kind of hit-and-miss with these things, and, again, all we've seen are a teaser and? a screenshot.

Sam Arthurs: The Last Case of Benedict Fox

I cannot wait? to play The Last Case of Benedict Fox. Maybe it isn’t the most anticipated game of the year for the gaming world, but it has  everything that draws me to a game. So m?uch so that it kind of feels like someone asked what my favorite game elements are and then made a one out of them.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a ??Lovecraftian Metroidvania that follows the unofficial detective, Benedict Fox, and his demon companion. The two solve murders by visiting the memories of the victims, slipping between deminsions and collecting clues. They will also have to fight off monsters and cult members.

As usual, the art draws me in first. The electric purple, red, and black of the demon and monsters give it a dark, otherworldly feel, but then it’s grounded by the Gothic style of the house and Benedict’s outfit. It looks like dark academia but warped. The Gothic manor looks overly large, but even that seems to add to the appeal for me, as the mansion seems foreboding. Then the alternate dimension Benedict explores is surreal and teeming with Lovec??raftian monsters. I d??ig it so much.

I’m also a fan of Metroidvanias and murder mysteries. While I completely understand why people enjoy open worlds, when there’s a story invol??????????????????????????ved, I like how a Metroidvania will lead you through it. It’s this nonlinear but purpose-driven “find the clues and fight the bad guys?style that will be more likely to keep me in my seat for hours. And I’m really looking forward to exploring that big house.

Finally, I’m a fan of the Lovecraft-inspired weirdness. I have a friend who likes to listen to Lovecraft audiobooks while we draw or color, and it’s honestly one of the?? most fun hangouts I look forward to. And I’m really looking forward to this game too!

Sorrel Kerr-Jung: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a very special game ?in fact, it’s one of my favorite AAA titles of the last several years. I love Final Fantasy VII, I love stories about stories, and I love the works of Tetsuya Nomura, so it was always going to connect with me. I have basically no idea what Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is going to be, but I’m a??long for the ride n?o matter what.

2022’s Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion really sold me on Zac?k Fair, and I’m especially fond of his relationship with both Aerith and Cloud. The first trailer for Rebirth suggests that it’ll dive a little deeper i?nto Zack’s character and those dynamics, so I’m pumped to see what happens there.

I also can’t wait to see a little more of the world of Final Fantasy VII. Midgar is great, but we’ve been returning to Midgar for a while, and I’m ready? to revisit spots like Wutai and the G?old Saucer. I’d also be down to finally catch a chocobo, if Square Enix would be so kind.

Mostly, though, I’m just excited to spend more time with the Final Fantasy VII Remake party. I think the first game has some truly incredible character writing, both adapting and elevating the already phenomenal Final Fantasy VII crew, and I can’t wait to just settle in and spend a few dozen more hours with them. I’m particularly fond of what they’ve done with Barret, whose brazen eco-terrorist streak has taken center stage, but I also love emo nice guy Cloud, certified homie Tifa, and Aerith, who is always great. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll get some more Yuffie and a bit o?f Vincent this time around. Part of me is already dreading the third game. I don’t want to say goodbye to thes??e folks!

Anthony Marzano: Like a Dragon: Ishin

Like many others, I used Yakuza 0 as my entry point into the long-running titular series. Even though it took me almost two years to beat, it converted me into a fan of the series. Its amazing ability to jump from searing crime drama to a lighthearted slice of life made it a go-to for me when I needed some joy while also getting the grit I craved. So when I, a lifelong fan of jidaigeki saw that we were getting a remake of what is essentially Yakuza: Samurai, I was over the moon. Doubly so since Sony refuses to bring Ghost of Tsushima to PC, leaving me in a barren ??wasteland with no interactive samurai kino.

It's also nice that we got the exciting announcement nary a few months before the planned release. Only have to make it halfway through a long Midwest winter, then it's comfy time as I slice through dishonorable men. While I'm not expecting Kurosawa levels of storytelling here, just the ability to roam around a late Edo period hub-world is enough to make Ishin my most anticipated game o?f the year. Still waiting on word about if we'll have any type of management mini-game in it though...

resident evil 4 most anticipated

Jonathan Holmes: Resident Evil 4 Remake

Horror games are all about building anticipation and then releasing that pent-up energy with a big intense moment. The Resident Evil 4 remake has already done a great job of instilling that feeling of anticipation in players, and it’s not even out yet. The original game is one of the most respected, and successfully re-released games of all time, having been ported to every major console of the past 20 years. People already know it and love it. The highly successful Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes used it as a blueprint, as did the Resident Evil Revelations side games in the franchise, so for fans of the franchise, the game is practically a religious text. And for this writer, a 46-year-old man who aged out of the target demographic for AAA games about 15 years ago, Resident Evil 4 was t??he last AAA game that I felt was?? truly made for me.

So will Capcom be able to bring me back into the AAA fold with this loving reimagining of my all-time favorite Survival Horror title? Like Leon cautiously walking forward in a decrepit European Village adorned with bear traps and insect-infected farm hands, I’m both dreading and delighting at the possibilities of what lies around the corner. My cold, calloused hands haven’t felt much from a big blockbuster game in almost two decades (unless you could count well-known but not well-played niche franchises like Bayonetta and No More Heroes) but if things go my way, the Resident Evil 4 remake will blow minds with new content while still sticking to?? script enough to feel like a sweet homecoming.

most anticipated 2023 sf6

Chris Moyse: Street Fighter 6

Anyone frequenting Destructoid this past year will react with zero surprise to my entry. I first approached Capcom's mysterious announcement of a new Street Fighter with understandable trepidation, given the juggling of management behind the scenes and with the terrible launch of Street Fighter V still fresh in my mind. But, with each new trailer, announcement, and sneaky leaky, I became more and more intrigued ?convinced that ??pe??rhaps the veteran developer had learned from its past mistakes.

And then I go??t my hands on the title, (and, importantly, on my gurl Juri) and th??at intrigue turned to raw excitement.

From demos played at trade shows, to two betas in the comfort of my own home, I am incredibly confident in Capcom's handling of Street Fighter 6. From its dazzling visuals and smooth movement, (thank you, RE Engine) to its excellent online functionality, and plethora of promised modes, features, and side activities, Capcom appears to have taken all of the vitriol rightly directed at SFV's launch to heart, and seems determined to prove exactly why Street Fighter is, after all of these years, still the title to defines the genre. Surrounded by so much ??positivity it seems Capcom's game to lose. Stay the Course.

Happy New Year!

Oh my god it's 2023 and it's time for Whatcha Been Playing! I'd like to wish all of you a very, very happy new year, and I hope that this fresh turn on the merry-go-round of life opens up a world of excitement, happiness, and possibility for you all. Even if it actually ends up being a little more low-key than usual, then I still wa?nt you to ?receive all of the simple pleasures and small joys that you deserve.

It must be said that we've all really been up against it in the early years of th??e new decade, w??ith a lot of challenges that, frankly, nobody saw coming. But I think you've handled it marvelously. You've figured it out and made it work ?as you always have ?And I'm hoping that 2023 responds kindly by offering you good health, good opportunity, and good company.

And, seeing as you ar?e here with us this fine morning, you already have the latter nailed.

2020Free

I'm a tad under the weather in brain and body this week. As such, I haven't been up to a whole lot of gaming. I have been jamming my way through the 1990s joy of Breakers Collection, and you can expect a full review of that particular title to kick off the coming week. I also dived back into Skullgirls for the first time in a year, eagerly awaiting the coming of the deadly Black Dahlia!

Oh, and I also sat and stared at a basketful of games on PSN... Do I really need those games? Haven't I got enough games? Equall??y, have I even got enough time for them? I mean, there's work to do, AGDQ to wa?tch, movies to catch up on, and an already extensive backlog of missed gems...

Ack. New Year, Same Old Problems!

Let's Get Started!

And with that, I'm? already letting all y'all run free into this first weekend of 2023. I hope that you all make it a good one and that the weekend kicks your years off in a pleasing manner. Oh, but before you jog on, please jump into the comments below and let us all know Whatcha Been Playing? I'd really like to see the first edition of this year hit a home run in the comment count, so please take the time to share your current gaming obsessions with us, and maybe converse with your f?ellow community members. And I hope, sincerely, that this year will bring you joy, comfort, good health, and success.

H?ave a wonderful weeken?d, from all of us at Destructoid.

Start the year off with new Switch games

The Nintendo eShop is celebrating the start of the ?year with some sales on Switch games. The new Year Sale is live right now, with decent cut??s into a chunk of the Nintendo Switch's catalog.

This year's sale runs from January 5 to January 15, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Purch??ases here goes towards Gold Points too, so it's easy to rack up some extra spending cash.

Some highlights of this sale are actually some surprisingly recent games. For those looking to dump many, many hours into the Nintendo Switch at the start of the year, you don't need to look much further than Persona 5 Royal. The massive RPG finally made its way to Nintendo Switch last year, and the 30% cut drop????s the price tag down to $41.99.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is also on sale, albeit only for its Gold Edition. While the 22% cut takes it down to roughly $70, just a hair above the base game's price, it also include the Season Pass. And if you want a solid tactics game with some surprising and inventive takes on the genre, you can't really go wrong with Sparks of Hope.

Heck, even Sonic Frontiers is seeing a 30% price cut, and AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative has al?so dropped by 30% for the sale too. This is a solid way to catch up on some games you might have missed at the end of last year.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuTcBAkyNL4

The Switch sales carry on

My personal pick from the sale is Celeste, the incredible 2018 platformer which is dropped to a mere $5 for this sale. Seriously, if you haven't played Celeste, it is well worth your time.

Some other price cuts have been popping up on the eShop too, as noted by social media sales aggregator Wario64. So if you're still looking to get a slightly obscure 3DS game like Culdcept Revolt for a low, low price, now's the time to do so.

What am I, made of PSN cards?

A heads-up for all of you shopaholics that Sony Interactive Entertainment has refreshed its ongoing PlayStation Holiday Sale, adding thousands of titles with discounts up ?to a huge 75%??. The sale, which began at the tail-end of December will now run until Wednesday, January 18.

Obviously, there's little point in me picking out specific titles, but a huge breadth of genres and releases are covered here, from retro classics to some of 2022's finest. Deluxe Editions and DLC are also up for grabs, along with a wide variety of indie hits and Japanese obscurities. I'm in no doubt that you might have? already burned out your bank accounts over the past fortnight, but that's why the stagger the additions this way. Pret?ty sneaky, sis.

He?re is the full list of titles added to the PlayStation Sale. Sorry 'bout yer scroll finger.

Look forward to something, somewhere, at somepoint

Happy new year folks! Here's to another fine year of this fine pastime of video gaming, and it seems that many of Japan's biggest developers and publishers are all ready and r??aring to bring fun new adventures your way in 2023... They just aren't exactly ready to come forward with any titles, release dates, platforms, or trailers...

As part ?of the myriad Happy New Year messages dropped by multiple studios, a lot of titles were certainly teased ?in as much as it was revealed that they exist, somewhere, in somebody's desk.

[Thanks to Gematsu and Famitsu for the translations of the studios' messages.]

Konami led the charge, teasing "??power-ups", (whatever the hell that means), and "new developments?? for familiar series" while also "quietly progressing on new projects". So, look forward to all of that. Especially the power-ups!!

Persona publisher Atlus also joined the cryptic crew, noting that it is "preparing several unannounced titles" while also asking fans to check out the incoming ports of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, which hit PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms on January 19. They'll be? here before you know it ?ready and raring for their 14th playthrough.

Spike Chunsoft ?of Danganronpa and AI: The Somnium Files ?also noted that it was "preparing unannounced large-scale title(s)" with some form of reveal to be expected "in the not-so-distant future". Spike Chunsoft is also preparing Master Detective Archives: Rain Code for its upcoming Switch release, and will also be handling the long-awaited PS5 edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition.

Koei Tecmo was a little more specific with its new year plans, announcing new RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant for PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch platforms. Fans can expect the new title at some point in 2023. Developers Omega Force and Kou Shibusawa, and Aniplex released a short teaser trailer. You can also check out a brand-new website right here.

So there you have it. Plenty of studios are plann??ing to release something, at some point. Let's go!

It's the children who are wrong

Square Enix has kicked off its 2023 with a reaffirmation of its commitment to controversial and fragile blockchain gaming sector. As noted by Eurogamer, the company's annual New Year's letter, sees president Yosuke Matsuda reiterate that t??he publisher aims to release multiple blockchain-based games in th?e future.

"Our Group has mu??ltiple blockchain games based on original IPs under development, some of which we announced last year, and we are undertaking preparations that will enable us to unveil even more titles this year," writes Matsuda. "We are also engaged in global sourcing from an investment perspective and will continue to take stakes in promising businesses whether we f?ind them in Japan or abroad."

While the blockchain and NFT market was incredibly turbulent over the past year, resulting in enormous losses for investors as well as receiving constant blowback from players within the gaming sphere, Matsuda suggests that all the negative publicity not only didn't faze his company's plans but, he ??writes, might actually be beneficial for the fu??ture of the cryptocurrency market.

"Blockchain has been an object of exhilar??ation and a source of turmoil, but with that in the rearview mirror, we hope that blockchain games will transition to a new stage of growth in 2023," continues Matsuda. "If this [controversy] proves to have been a step in a process that leads to the creation of rules and a more transparent business enviro??nment, it will definitely have been for the good of the growth of blockchain entertainment."

"As I said in last year's New Year's letter, if we consider traditional gaming to have been centralized, then blockchain gaming?? must operate bas?ed on a self-sustaining decentralized model. It is that concept, that philosophy that I see to be key."

Elsewhere in the letter, Matsuda reiterates plans to shut down titles Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, (January 11) and Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights (February 28). In addition, Chocobo Racing GP will not receive any further major updates, with season 5 bei?ng the title's final updated season.

"We would like to express our sincere grat??itude to our customers for their patronage and s??incerely apologize for this announcement." says Matsuda of these game closures.

Still, at least you have all those s?weet blockchain games to look forward to.

Reveal will be unrelated to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

2023 is underway, and, like clockwork, all of the studios and publishers are taking to the airwaves to offer non-descript teases for their new year's wares ?Perhaps the most notable of these has come from Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase, who has teased a "big announcement" concerning the legendary Final Fantasy franchise.

Interestingly, however, Kitase notes that the announcement is unrelated to the ongoing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth project, which Kitase is helming alongside the team at SE's Creative Business Unit I. While it is believed that the second chapter of the epic remake series is schedul?ed to launch in the winter of this year, the mystery announcement seemingly concerns an entire?ly different project.

"Development is picking up speed on the title I’m producing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth," said Kitase in the short New Year's message. "I’m sure many of your collective imaginations are running wild trying to picture how we’ll recreate some of the game’s most iconic scenes, and we’ll have more to share about that when the time is right.??"

"There’s also another big announcement unrelated to Final Fantasy VII that I can’t say anything about just yet. Rest assured we’r?e working hard to make sure 2023 is the most exciting year yet."

Given that 2023 is the "Year of th?e The Rabbit", Kitase's message was also accompanied by cute artwork featuring our lop-eared pals from the FF universe, daubed by Rokuma Saito

Intriguing news. Time will tell whether we're looking at another remake announcement, a wholly new title from Kitase and co. or some other multimedia project entirely. I'd say "it looks like this year is going to be a big year for Final Fantasy fans", but, quite honestly, when was the last time a year didn't bring us a slew of new titles, remasters, DLC, ports, mobile releases, or updates for games set within the most recognizable RPG series of all time? Every year is a big year for Final Fantasy fans.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is schedu?led to launch winter 2023, e?xclusively on PS5.

Setting my goals for 2023

At this point, I think we all have a pretty good idea of what a great year it was for game releases, but now I'm interested in focusing the conversation a bit more on how this year in gaming went for us individually. After all, it's the time of year when a lot of us will set new year's resolutions to help us introspect and change our habits as the cloc??k ticks over into 2023, and I want to do the same when it comes to my favorite hobby. I'm someone who benefits a lot from structure in my life, so anything I can do to create expectations and goals for myself I think will help me be more of the gamer that I want to be in 2023. So, here are my gaming resolutions for next year.

Pick up the controller

This first one seems a bit obvious, but it's a big one for?? me: play more games. After dealing with some gnarly mental health issues that have knocked me on my ass over the past few years, I had trouble getting myself to do anything, let alone work up the energy to start a new game I had never played before. Thankfully I have help now and things have slowly been improving for me, which means I played way more games in 2022 than I have in ages -- and I actually got lost in the games I loved this year for a change.

Another little goal I'm setting for myself is to finish at least one open world game this year. I did QA for a third person action game a few years ago, and ever since then I've a ton of trouble sitting down and playing for more than about an hour at a time, especially when the gameplay is similar to that of the game I worked on. That's one of the big reasons indie games were my focus this year (aside from the fact that indies are always my favorite). I missed out on games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok because it all felt like too much for me right now, but I am determ?ined to break through that mindset this year.

[caption id="attachment_281227" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Horizon Forbidden West Image via Guerrilla Games[/caption]

Finish what you started

I don't know what it is, but I have a hard time finishing things that I've started, whether it's a book, show, movie, or of course a game. Sometimes it's because I?? lose interest, sometimes it's because I'm enjoying something so much I just don't want it to end, and a lot of the time I have no idea why I do what I do. It's a weird habit I have, but it needs to stop in the new year. Since I'm trying to play more games in general in 2023, and actually rolling credits on the games I start should help with that.

The other issue that arises with this habit is that I won't leave just?? one or two games unfinished that I've started, but four, five, six at a time. I forget which games I've even begun, or (this one's the worst) I'll let a save file sit too long and I know it's going to be a whole chore to try to remember the controls and where I was in the story, but I've invested too much time already to want to start over. Why am I l??ike this?

Platformers, anyone?

I've conquered a lot of genres I thought I'd never enjoy as a baby gamer, but one category of games continues to elude me entirely: platformers. The precision required to not even excel at the genre, but to simply make it through a title is something that I severely lack to the point that I had to quit Gris because of a platforming jump I couldn't make. Gris.

My platforming resolution this year is to pick a game to try out, and just stick with it until I get it. It'll take a lot of patience and focus, but I really think I can do it. I was always interested in playing Celeste anyway on account of it being an amazing game, and I also heard recently that it's a game that will simultaneously teach you platforming and make you fall in love with the genre similar to what Hades did for hack-and-sla?sh gameplay, and that's all I needed to hear. I'm not expecting to become a platforming speedrunner or any??thing, but if I can get good enough to make it through a game without rage quitting, I'll be content.

[caption id="attachment_242189" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot via Maddy Makes Games[/caption]

Mods... mods everywhere

One of my favorite news articles to write is about whatever awesome mod the community has come up with. I've been a casual admirer of the modding community for a good while, and the only real mod I've ever worked with was jailbreaking my Quest so I could play K-pop songs on Beat Saber. I don't think I'm quite ready to try and start creating my own mods at this po??int, but in the new year I'd love to simply try out more mods for games that I love.

That's already a ch??allenge enough for my non-existent technical skills, plus it's nice to put a new spin on some of my favorite games.

Let's love on the little guys

I've made my love of the indie scene more than clear at this point, but the indies I play are still some of the most well-loved games of the year. My roommate is really great at digging into the depths of the internet and finding the coolest stuff from the tiniest dev teams imaginable (like Hypnospace Outlaw for example, pictured bel?ow), and I want to emulate that energy in 2023.

I'm lu?cky enough to have a platform in the games space, and I'd love nothing more than to use it to highlight the?? smallest game devs out there who are really paving the way, especially shining a light on marginalized communities.

[caption id="attachment_356273" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot via No More Robots[/caption]

What about you?

So, those are my gaming ?resolutions for the new year, but I wanna know -- what are yours? Are you trying to broaden your horizons in terms of genre? Are you looking to hone your skills in your favorite title? Maybe you're looking to get a loved one in on the action with a kick-ass co-op game.

I want to hear what goals you're setting for yourself next year when it comes to games, so let me know your plans down in the comments??!

Don't lose your way (finder)

Airship Syndicate is teaming up with the studio behind Warframe for a new multiplayer title. Wayfinder is a co-op action RP?G that mixes fantasy and tech for some co-op action RPG adventures.

Revealed at tonight's Game Awards 2022, Wayfinder is a new action RPG for PC and consoles, aiming for 2023. Creative director Joe "Mad" Madureira, of Battle Chasers fame, is at the helm with Airship Syndicate. Digital Extremes, the company behind Warframe, is publishing.

Wayfinder is set in the world of Evenor, which is gradually being consumed by Gloom. Wayfinders (the players) take up the mantle an??d fight the Gloom, working to fight back against its spread together.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYFU7jrMAIM

Eac??h Wayfinder has their own unique story to explore and play style to utilize. You can collect and craft gear to improve your loadout, while also boosting up your character themselves. Runs can be customized with unique modifiers and challenges to offer special hunting and gathering chan?ces.

The draw is multiplayer, ??and it looks like you can set out with a pretty decently sized party. Alongside fighting the Gloom, there's also an?? at-home customization element with the player's Apartment.

Finding a way forward

While Airship Syndicate and Digital Extremes are aiming for 2023 on PC and console, you'll potentially be able to play Wayfinder before the year's out. A closed playtest is being held for Wayfinder starting on Tuesday, December 13. If you want to try it out, you can head over to the Wayfinder PC playtest sign-ups here. Meanwhile, PlayStation playte??sts will be ?held in January.

Then, in spring 2023, the duo of Airship and Extremes aims to launch Wayfinder into Early Access on PC and PlayStation. A free-to-play full?? launch is expected to follow in fall 2023, and embrace Digital Extremes' "free-and-fair" monetization policy, according to a pres??s release.

Amnesia gets a gun

The next Amnesia from Frictional Games has been announced, and it's descending into a twisted manmade horror. Amnesia: The Bunker is a new entry in the horror series, arr?iving on PC and console??s in March 2023.

Frictional showed off a short clip of the new Amnesia today, spotlighting what terror may lurk in its darkest corners. Amnesia: The Bunker is set in a decrepit World War? I-era bunker??, where something has quite plainly gone wrong.

There are horrors that lurk out of sight, and for that, you will have a gun in Amnesia: The Bunker. The problem is, it looks ?like Fric?tional's only giving you one bullet.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxLSsDmtj-U

The mechanical nature of the light and pocketwatch are already two major draws. As someone who loved the tactile feel of tools in games like the Metro series, that's right up my alley.

And a gun might have felt like a strange addition to Amnesia, which is usually more in the run-and-hide realm of horror compared to something like Resident Evil. Yet as we can? see in the trailer, and in the description, that gun starts with one bulle?t. Genius.

A more active Amnesia

Sadly, it does seem like you can craft more weapons and tools to deal with the nightmares of the bunker. (Yes, I wa??s hoping that you'd only have ??one bullet, for the whole game.)

Amnesia: The Bunker takes place in a semi-open world, accordin??g to Frictional, where you'll need to explore and test things out to find a way out. There's also a dynamic and "ever-present" monster that responds to your actions.

Overall, it feels like Frictional tackling the Alien: Isolation brand of horror, and I'm interested in that. Frictional Games has been putting together horror games for?? some time, and while combat isn't usually at the forefront of their games, I'm interested to see what they do with it.

Amnesia: The Bunker arrives in March 2023 for PC and consoles. You can wishlist it on Steam over here.

Plenty of world premieres to go around

Summer Game Fest is locking in its 2023? plans, and they involve a live studio audience. The kickoff of Summer Game Fest 2023 will take place on June 8, 2023.

The show will air on live streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. And this time around, it'll have an audience in attendance. The Summer Game Fest kickoff show will have a live audience, a first for the SGF. It'll take plac??e at the YouTube Theater a?t Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California.

Tickets will go on sale, if you want to be there, sometime in early 2023. You can keep an eye on the happenings and sign up for updates here.

//twitter.com/summergamef??est/status/1598361294234689536

The full lineup for the Summer Game Fest, including more participants and activities, will be announced sometime in the future. Show host ??and organizer Geoff Keighley said in a press release that SGF will also highlight other publisher digital events, as well as demos and "more surprises" to be announced.

The summer looms in the distance

We're still working our way towar??ds the end of 2022, but this summer is shaping up to be an interesting one for gaming news. The pandemic put a hold on a lot of the usual events, including the arguably largest show in E3.

But E3 is returning in 2023 with help from PAX organizer ReedPop, with plans to host industry and consumer days. The E3 2023 action will run from June 13 throu?gh 16, with digital showcases starting on June 11.

Summer Game Fest was originally conceived as an answer to the pandemic shutdowns and lockdowns. The digital-only festival has become a recurring staple of summers since, and has ?also blanketed the summer's usual bout of gaming news and announcements.

With a live audience now in tow, it looks like this year will see shows trying to return to the way things were. I'm a bit curious to see how it all shakes out now, after year?s of digitally focused events.

There are still world premieres in our near future though, as The Game Awards 2022 kicks off a week from today.

There's more headed to the Frontiers

Sega has outlined the 2023 content road map ahead for Sonic Frontiers. New playable characters, a photo mode, challenges, and more are all in store for Sonic Frontiers in 2023.

The DLC roadmap was laid out today on the Sonic social accounts. Three big updates are planned for 2023, and they're set to be free for all Sonic Frontiers owners. The content and nam??es of said content are subject t??o change, Sega notes.

Update 1 will consist of a juke box for all those excellent tunes, as well as a photo mode. So yes, you'll be able to take some S?onic Selfies. Those two pieces are joined by new challenge modes to tackle, which may include the golden Super Sonic.

Sonic frontiers roadmap

In Update 2, it's So??nic's birthday! Plus, an Open Zone Challenge and new Koco. I am definitely cur?ious to see what a Sonic birthday party looks like.

Then, the heavy hitters arrive in Update 3. Playable characters and new story are both due out in Update 3, and it looks like a doozy. We have a teaser of the Frontiers villain, as well as portraits for Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. The implication seems to be that the Sonic crew will b?e playable in some way, ??but we'll doubtless learn more in the new year.

Now it's a party

How those different characters, who often have pretty distinct playstyles from Sonic, will fit into the world of Sonic Frontiers will be interesting to see if that's how it pans out. Knuck?les and Amy can definitely handle some combat, and flying around as Tails in a big, open space could be f?un.

We'll find out more of what's in store as we get closer to the launch of these new updates. In the meantime, Sonic Frontiers is still a fairly fresh game, so this might be the sign for holdouts to try it out if they want to check out all the extra conte??nt later.

It has a big retro-future vibe, in the same vein as Deathloop and the upcoming Rollerdrome. It's also got some notable industry names attached to its developer?, Embark ??Studios.

Embark is headed up by former DICE CEO Patrick Söderlund, so it could have some similar ideas. And honestly, a co-op PvE game with a mix of outer-space and tinge of Battlefield sounds pretty alright to me.

We haven't seen too much of ARC Raiders yet though, aside from what was shown at last year's Game Awards. It's third-person, and seems to have a pretty hefty amount of gunfire and explosions, as well as some fearsome and massive robots to take down. It's some borderline Earth Defense Force vibes, which I'll be honest, I'm here for! Big?? ??robots versus small soldiers sounds like a good time.

We'll see how the project comes together as Embark continues to work on it and show off more. Until then, we'll have to wait for the new year to see more of ARC Raiders.

Next year will be the "most exciting" in Dead Cells' history

Time rolls on, and so does Dead Cells. Today, the team at Motion Twin shared an updated roadmap for the future of Dead Cells, which?? is set to carry into 2023 and contain??s some big things.

The team says this update is specifically to combat the belief that, after the latest DLC, Dead Cells is at or near the end of its lifespan.

Currently planned for 2022 is the panchaku update and flame head outfit, as well as some rebalancing and reworking. Then this fall, Motion Twin plans to launch a Boss Rush mode for Dead Cells.

More updates are set for winter as well.?? Keep in mind these are all rough estimates, and nothing's quite set in stone.

Dead Cells roadmap

Then, in 2023, the team is advertising the "most exciting year" in Dead Cells' history. Motion Twin says it will be the biggest year since the Dead Cells 1.0 launch.

"What we're getting at here is that we're very much in the mid-life of Dead Cells. We're not sneaking? out at night to get drunk on street corners anymore, but we've still got plenty of life in us before our knees start to give in, so prepare yourselves for more Dead Cells content."

Not quite dead after all

To its credit, the Dead Cells team has been steadily rolling out update after update over the years. Even though the action roguelike is roughly four years old at this point, Motion Twin and its spin-off studio Evil Empire have kept on delivering new content.

So, even though The Queen and The Sea DLC went live earlier this year, rumors of Dead Cells fading out o??f the pict?ure seem to be greatly exaggerated. As for what Motion Twin and Evil Empire have planned for 2023, we'll have to see in the new year.

The Ukrainian team is continuing development as the invasion continues

Today's Xbox Games Extended Showcase closed out with a sobering reminder of the current realities for GSC Game World. The Ukrainian studio has been public about the effect the Russian invasion has had on development. Today the team opened up about it, sharing an emotional update as it confirmed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is moving to 2023.

While the studio shared a new video about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 itself, which you can find here, GSC Game World also shared a dev diary about its current status. Th?e three-minute video ??is powerful and a heavy watch, just so you know.

The video shows the toll that the invasion has taken on its developers and where they live. While some have been able to get out, others have not been able to, or opted to volunteer or even serve in the armed forces. The video shows develop??ers living in small hallways, rushing for bomb shelters, and walking around in destroyed city blocks. One describes how he's unsure whether some of his loved ones are safe or not. It is a heavy reminder of the real toll the Russian invasion has taken on average people in Ukraine.

During the update, GSC Game World confirms that it has pushed the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl into 2023.

Development during wartime

The Russian invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022 and has continued for 111 days. It's taken its toll on many Ukrainian citizens including those at GSC Game World and more, as detailed in a report from IGN in May. Many other developers and publishers have called for aid and action in response to the invasion, including withholding their games and services from Russia and Belarus.

Our hearts go out to the GSC Game World team. The studio has shared a link at which you can help provide aid.

See you next year, space cowboy

Electronic Arts and Motive have set a target window for their upcoming remake of Dead Space. The Dead Space remake will be targeting an early 2023 window for launch.

The news came today, alongside a developer live stream showing gameplay of the updated sci-fi survival horror classic. It's a pretty lengthy watch, but worth it if you want to see where Motive is currently at with their take on Dead Space.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMQOkpZO5eM

Today's livestream focused on audio in particular. The USG Ishimura is looking to be even creepier than before, thanks to the way sounds can morph to the environment. Also, Motive is using the "A.L.I.V.E." system to chan??ge how Isaac delivers dialogue, depending on his current state. It's pretty cool audio tech.

The news of an early 2023 window pushes it out from a reported target of October 2022. It seems like EA Motive is taking some extra time to ensure it gets the scares and atmosphere of Dead Space just right.

Considering the bar set for survival horror remakes by games like Resident Evil 2, it's no surprise Electronic Arts and Motive want to get this right from the get-go. Dead Space may have laid dormant for a few years, but it's a memorable franchise that fans have certain??ly been eager to see revived.

Hopefully the time to polish and fine-tune the scares works out for the best. In the meantime, it's not like we're wanting for games in 2022 anyways. I'm pretty sure I'll be playing Elden Ring for at leas?t the next few months. We'll see what Mo??tive has in store for Isaac in the new year.
