Though its time in the spotlight has long since passed, the 3DS is still a great place to play some incredible games. It was a particularly strong console if you loved RPGs and puzzle games. But the 3DS did a g??reat job of bringing 3D action games into the portable ??realm. Overall, it's an incredible little system with a killer library to enjoy.

Some of the games will be harder to get your hands on, especially those only purchasable from the now defunct eShop. But if you can get some time with these gam?es, it'll be absolutely worth the hassle. To avoid any ranking issues, these games are in alphabetical order. We've also included some honorable mentions at the end for remakes and ports.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Animal Crossing New Leaf Title Screen

Not only is it one of the best 3DS games, Animal Crossing: New Leaf easily has the most hours spent on a 3DS game for a lot of people. It was a tremendous showing for the series when it launched in 2012. Becoming the mayor of your town and having a lot more control over how it looked really resonated with players. While nobody was really backing the amiibo part of the Welcome Amiibo! update, the massive boost in content helped cement this game as a must-have for all 3DS owners. Many people consider this the definitive Animal Crossing to this day.

Attack of the Friday Monsters!

Attack of the Friday Monsters

One of the 3DS's strengths was being home for a lot of great, smaller games. The eShop allowed for digital distribution and cheaper price points, which attracted a lot of more niche projects. One such game was the Level 5 published Attack of the Friday Monsters! It's a very cutesy tale of kaiju attacking a small Japanese town. Its very Ghibli-esque ??in the presentation of this fantastic journey. The charming presentation proves that quality and scale are matters of perspecti?ve.

Azure Striker Gunvolt

One of the biggest breakout stars of the 3DS was the studio Inti Creates Co. They managed to bring a lot of unique twists to retro ideas for truly engaging games. One of their best was the Azure Striker Gunvolt series. The name is a bit of a mouthful, but the gameplay is as smooth as it gets. It's like a juiced up Mega Man X style platformer with some unique mechanics. Fortunately, the s?eri??es isn't bound to the 3DS anymore, so you can enjoy these games on other places like Steam.

Bravely Second

Bravely Second title screen

Sometimes, it's easy to go with the flow. You don't always have to reinvent the wheel when making a game, especially RPGs. Bravely Default, and it's sequel, established that there's still plenty of room to explore the JRPG genre. Turn based combat has rarely felt this fun and engaging. The Job System allows characters to switch classes with a snap. It lets you build the party how you want. If you've ever enjoyed a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, you owe it to yourself to check this s??eries out.

Etrian Odyssey Nexus

Etrian Odyssey title screen

We picked Etrian Odyssey Nexus because it's sort of a 'best of' for the series. It's the most recent, and probably one of the most feature complete. If you've only got time for one of these massive dungeon-crawling RPGs, this is probably your best bet. However, the general series lacks a lot of typical storytelling. There's more of a focus on the party customization and mapping features. If you're into games with a more direct story, we would recommend one of the Etrian Odyssey Untold games. These are remakes of the first two titles, originally on DS, that add more of a through-line narrative. These games can be as tough as JRPGs get, though later entries allow for plenty of difficulty customization. Frankly, there's not a bad game in the series. The origi?nal 3 DS games were remade for Switch and Steam recently if you want another avenue to check these games out. But top notch visuals and fully orchestrated music on 3DS are hard to beat. Plus, making your own maps on the 3DS screen is just fun!

Fire Emblem Awakening

Fire Emblem title screen

The Fire Emblem series always felt like a fairly niche one, not even making it stateside until the Game Boy Advance. Even then, it wasn't terribly common to find people who knew about them. That all changed with Fire Emblem Awakening. The game found a hell of a stride with its gameplay, storytelling, presentation, and mechanics. The amount of customization over your roster and the interactions with party members gave players something more to invest in. The newly added difficulty settings probably also helped the game find a broader audience. Several other Fire Emblem games came out for 3DS, and while they're good, none of them are quite as great as Awakening. That said, check out Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Velentia for a cool, different take on the series.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Kirby Planet Robobot title screen

Kirby started on handheld and always felt a bit more at home there than on consoles. But, the pink puff put in the work on 3DS. Kirby: Triple Deluxe was great, and there are a ton of fun spin-off games. However, nothing compares to the platforming perfection of Planet Robobot. Even now, this might be Kirby's best 2D platforming game. It's almost upsetting that they decided to remake Return to Dreamland for Switch before this. ?But, in any case, it's a delightful game with one of the best sound?tracks.

Zelda: Link Between Worlds title Screen

When Nintendo stated they were toying around with remaking A Link to the Past in 3D, it was exciting. That's one of the best video games ever, at least to a lot of people. Then, they suddenly announced that it had grown into a new game. It was hard to tell just how effective the new wall-merging mechanic would be at first. Once you got your hands on the game, however, it all became clear. This wasn't just a silly, slapped-on gimmick. The wall-merging was a truly awesome ability that played with the perspective of the traditionally 2D game in fun, new ways. On top of that, A Link Between Worlds was a solid Zelda adventure. It featured a more open-ended approach to world design that let players pick and choose their destinations, which would become a series staple ?for?? the next decade.

Mario Kart 7

Mario Kart 7 title screen

It didn't feel quite as exciting as when Mario Kart DS came out, but the 3DS title proved to be a new standard for the series. It introduced the concept of customizable karts to the series, allowing players to fine-tune their playstyle. It looked great, played better, and would only by surpassed by the unbelievably awesome Mario Kart 8.

Metroid: Samus Returns

Yes, Metroid: Samus Returns is technically a remake of the original Metroid 2 GameBoy Game. But it's such a vast reimagining, and such an incredible game, that it deserves to be on the main list anyway. It was an incredible return to a long dormant franchise. The innovations to combat featuring a more melee-focused counter system helped to create engaging new layers for the standard Metroid combat. If not for Samus Returns, we wouldn't have seen the eventual realization of Metroid Dread.

Persona Q 2: New Cinema Labyrinth

Persona Q 2 title screen

Nintendo fans may not have been used to Persona games, so bringing spin-offs to 3DS seemed weird. But any Persona fan can tell you that the Q games are fantastic. They're similar in structure to the Etrian Odyssey games, featuring a focus on dungeon crawling. However, they have all the customizable combat and killer music you'd expect from the Persona franchise. The Persona Q2 specifically has the rosters of Persona 3, 4, and 5 mixed together. These games are simply to??o good to pass by.

Picross 3D Round Two

Puzzle fans may have fallen in love with the Picross series at some point, but the Picross 3D games on DS and 3DS are incredible. If you're into any kind of number puzzle games like Sudoku, we highly recommend checking this one out. You use numbers and logic to break away at a large block until you form a 3D object. It's fun, immensely satisfying, and a great game for the pick up/put down nature of the 3DS. If you're into more 2D Picross games, check out the Picross e series by Jupiter,?? th?ey're all great. There's a ton of them on Switch, too.

Pocket Card Jockey

Horse racing has never been so engaging! Who knew that all it was missing was some solitaire! It may sound ridiculous, but it's immensely engaging. Not until Balatro would t??here be a card game that steals?? so much of our sleep away from us.

Project X Zone 2

Project x zone 2

Namco, Sega, Capcom, and Nintendo characters all mashed into one tactics game. What more could anybody possibly want? These two great games, developed by Monolith Soft, feature a massive collection of characters from all sorts of your favorite franchises dueling together on a grid. Project X Zone's tile-based combat is engaging, even if the story is a little... nonsensical. Still, it's another great strategy game with a fun cast to work with. We never knew how badly we wanted to see KOS-MOS, Jill Valentine, and Tron Bonne team up before these games. And, in Project X Zone 2, Fire Emblem characters join in for an even crazier mash-up.

Pushmo

The main character grabs the platform in the background to pull it forward. The platform is shaped like a duck.

Sure, this game isn't going to revolutionize the way you think about video games as an artform. But sometimes, all you need is a great puzzle game. Pushmo is all about moving around blocks to create platforms to climb to the top of the structure you're on. It sounds simple, but it can be a real head scratcher at times. The ??charming presentation makes this a wonderful little package overall.

Shin Megami Tensei IV

Shin Megami Tensei IV title screen

Shin Megami Tensei IV is a standalone game, you don't need to have played the previous games to understand it. It's basically a perfect game RPG. It might not be reinventing the genre like Bravely Default, but it proves that you can still make a hell of a great game with a "standard" formula. The atmosphere, story, and gameplay are some of the all-time best of any Japanese RPGs. The sequel, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, might be off-putting for some due to its much stranger story and more punishing mechanics.?? But if that doesn't sound bad to you, then we whole-heartedly recommend that as well.

Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight title screen

While this has certainly appeared on every platform under the sun, it's original release on 3DS was a monumental success. In some ways, that's still the best version of the game. It made a strong case for the 3D slider with it's strong presentation. Shovel Knight is a pixel perfect platformer that combines the best ideas of? the NES generation into a solid, modern game. There has since been a ton of new campaigns and content added to it, as well as a few spinoffs, but it's hard to beat that original game.

Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land story

We're still amazed how easy it is to go back and pick this game up and have fun. It never fails. There's a ton of brilliant levels that seem to combine design elements of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Galaxy into one of the best 3D platformers out there. It was eventually followed up by Super Mario 3D World on Wii U and Switch, but there's still something charming about the scope of the 3DS title. It's easily one of Mario's best 3D?? games.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars

A screenshot of Tom Clancy Shadow Wars

This game kind of came out of nowhere. It feels like a Tom Clancy game in name only. It's actually a tactical RPG like Advance Wars. In fact, since Advance Wars never touched the 3DS, this is the best way for you to scratch that itch. It's an incredibly well designed tactics game, even if you're not normally someone who's very into the "Clancy-verse." The story leans very hard into more science-fiction territory, imagining future tools of war like camouflage ??cloaks and crazy weapons.

VVVVVV

A screenshot of VVVVVV featuring the player character upside down surrounded by Yes Men

This oddly-named indie title is a tough-a??s-spikes platformer that will have you screaming "I've got this!" over and over until you're pulling your hair out. Then you'll actually make the impossible series of jumps, and find something even more i?nsane on the next screen. It's tough, but satisfying gameplay will be off-putting for some, but we think a lot of people will find this game an absolute blast. Fortunately, it's not just locked to the 3DS these days.

Honorable Mentions for Remakes and Ports

  • Digital Devil Survivor 1 and 2: Originally, these were both DS games. Atlus gave them a fresh update for the 3DS, adding new content and improved mechanics. They're a unique mixture of the Shin Megami Tensei formula with grid-based tactics gameplay. The results are highly enjoyable, replayable RPGs about the surviving the end of the world.
  • Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn: A port of the Wii game, this is an excellent platformer with a deceptively cute exterior. While it's a game where you can't die, the real trick is finding all the secrets and making it to the end of the level with all your collected gems. This approach of easy-to-play, difficult-to-master design makes for a game that is as engaging as it is ruthlessly adorable.

Majora's Mask title screen

  • Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D: It's Majora's Mask with improved features and graphics. Of course we also recommend Ocarina of Time 3D as well. Some of us have a stronger fondness for the weirder, offbeat tones of the sequel, though.
  • Poochy &Yoshi's Wooly World: While it lost some of the charm of Wooly World's visuals on Wii U, the gameplay is still top notch. If you're a fan of Yoshi's Island, this is easily the best anyone has come to replicating that, and maybe even improving it.
  • Rhythm Heaven Megamix: It's a crime we haven't had a new Rhythm Heaven in so long, because it's a great series. Even this was more of a "Best of" compilation of re-made songs and games. If you've never played one of these whacky rhythm games, you should absolutely seek this out.
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux: Another DS game that Atlus gave a huge update for the 3DS. It's another dungeon crawler, like Etrian Odyssey, but focuses more on puzzle solving than mapping. The sci-fi trappings are also a unique touch for the standard demon-hunting series. The combat can be punishing, so this is not a game for the feint of heart.
  • WarioWare Gold: Similar to Rhythm Heaven Megamix, this was a best-of collection of the micro-game series. And just like Rhythem Heaven Megamix, you absolutely should have this game in your collection.

Having a large library of game adaptations can be considered one of the biggest testaments to a franchise's success. In this regard, only a few can rival One Piece.

But surprisingly, for the flagship of the Shonen demographic, the games based on the series can vary from sleeping hits to entries even die-hard fans struggle to love. Here are all One Piece games, ranked.

All One Piece Games, Ranked From Worst to Best

To be fair in our rankings, we decided to only focus on games that made it to the West officially with an English localization. We also won't be including crossovers such as J-Stars Victory Vs+ and Jump Force.

Image via Bandai Namco

But although both will involve battles, you won't be able to jump into the fray directly. Instead, you will be in charge of operating a canon to face either a Kraken or stop a Marine attack. A short experience that offers very little, Grand Cruise feels like a missed opportunity.

Images via MobyGames

  • Available on: Nintendo 3DS
  • Released on: 2011 (SP) / 2012 (SP2)

One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP and SP2 are localizations released after the debut of SP's Japanese version. Each game features half of the title's story, as well as some exclusive features. Among them, we have the Marineford Episodes. The mode adapts the arc it's named after and brings many of its protagonists as playable characters. Unfortunately, that is overshadowed by how both SP and SP2 feature considerable downgrades when compared to the original Unlimited Cruise episodes.

19. One Piece: Thousand Storm

Image via DeNA

  • Released for mobile devices
  • Released on: 2016

A gacha action RPG, One Piece Treasure Cruise won the hearts of many through its simplistic gameplay and F2P-friendly approach. The latter is seen in how the game did not have a character-pulling system. Instead, players could pull for Cards, which could then be equipped to characters to provide buffs or skills. Treasure Cruise was discontinued in January 2024.

18. One Piece: Grand Battle!

Image via MobyGames

  • Platforms: PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube
  • Released on: 2005 / Released in Japan as One Piece: Grand Battle! Rush

Grand Battle! was the first title in the series to debut ??in North America and features 16 playable characters.

17. One Piece Gigant Battle

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: Nintendo DS

Here, you can take any characters from its roster of 20 to the field and join up to 4v4 battles. You can also use dozens of supports to get the upper hand. The title was the only game in the Gigant Battle series to be released outside of Japan.

16. One Piece: Romance Dawn

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: Nintendo 3DS (also PSP in Japan)
  • Released on: 2012 (PSP) / 2014 (3DS)

A turn-based RPG, One Pìece: Romance Dawn allows you to follow Luffy from the beginning of the OP story to the heartbreaking end of the Marineford Arc. The title features solid combat mechanics, but it's hurt by its map designs and lack of side content. Nonetheless, One Piece: Romance Dawn offers a unique experience sure to at least entertain fans??.

15. One Piece: Pirates' Carnival

Image via MobyGames

  • Available on: PS2 and GameCube
  • Released on: 2005 (Japan) / 2006 (United States)

Any successful manga/anime is guaranteed to receive a minigame-centric title at one point. In One Piece's case, that's Pirates' Carnival. The game allows up to 4 players to participate in 40+ minigames. All of which can be played either as standalone experiences or as part of its Board Game mode. A casual experience that follows the formula made famous by the Mario Party franchise, One Piece: Pirates' Carnival brings a niche but fun experience to all.

14. One Piece: Grand Adventure

Image via MobyGames

  • Available on: PS2 and GameCube
  • Released on: 2006

An open-world action RPG featuring an original storyline and set after the events of Enies Lobby. One Piece: Unlimited Adventure follows the Star Hats after t?hey come into contact with a glowing orb. The game brings a good degree of exploration to players. Being able to play as all Straw Hats is also a plus.

Apart from the above, Unlimited Adventure also relies heavily on crafting and building. Both of which would become staples for the series. Fo??r fans of fighting games, you can also take control of more than 40 characters in up to 7v7 versus battles here.

In it, you are tasked with capturing treasures on the battlefield and then guarding their areas from your opponents. A feat you can accomplish by performing explosive combos and characteristic attacks. Bounty Rush a??lso boasts a roster of more than 250 characters going from East Blue to Egghead.

9. One Piece Pirate Warriors (PS3)

Image via MobyGames

  • Available on: PS3
  • Release Year: 2012

Pirate Warriors is the title responsible for starting what many believe to be the greatest One Piece game series of all time. Developed by Omega Force, the game features the musou style made famous by the developer's Destiny Warriors franchise. On it, you can take a multitude of characters and battle against hordes of hundreds. This was a match made in heaven, as One Piece's larger-than-life att?acks were a perfect fit for the genr?e.

Except for Skypea and Thriller Bark, players can experience all of the arcs up to Return to Sabaody in Pirate Warriors. Its sma?ll roster, however, might cause it to become repetitive relatively fas?t.

8. One Piece: Unlimited World Red

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: 3DS, PS3, Vita, Nintendo Wii U, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PC
  • Release Year: 2013

The latest game in the Unlimited series, One Piece: Unlimited World Red features huge visual upgrades when compared to previous titles. ??The game?? also features another original non-canonical story, this time situated between Punk Hazard and Dressrosa.

Overall, the core of the Unlimited experience remains almost the same here. Although Unlimited World Red shakes things up by focusing way more on combat. The latter of which is still as straightforward as it was in the Wii installments. The franchise's building and crafting mechani?cs are also taken to anothe?r level. Now, you can upgrade a whole town.

7. One Piece (GBA)

Image via MobyGames, assembled by Destructoid

  • Available on: Game Boy Advance
  • Release Year: 2005

Sometimes less is more. An action platformer developed by Dimps and released exclusively in North America, One Piece allows players to follow through the events of the East Blue saga.?? Featuring a solid but simple beat 'em-up combat and well-made sprites, this game is a bl??ast. Honestly, the only downsides here are its length and how you cannot battle with any Straw Hat apart from Luffy.

6. One Piece Pirate Warriors 2

Image via MobyGames

  • Available on: PS3 and PSVita
  • Release Year: 2013

One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 further polishes the combat system featured in the original game while also increasing its roster to 37 characters. The former is not an understatement, as the game feels faster, more consistent, and way more responsive. The title also removed QTEs and the divisive platform sections players came to hate in Pirate Warriors. On the other hand, Pirate Warriors 2's most debatable point lies in its main story, where you don't play through the series' arcs. Instead, the game features an alternat?ive What If original scenario.

5. One Piece Treasure Cruise

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: Mobile
  • Release Year: 2014

One Piece Treasure Cruise is a gacha turn-based RPG that allows you to revisit the whole ?story of the franchise. The title also allows you to take more than 200 characters to the field in various modes. Most of the characters must be pulled in true gacha fashion.

The game's biggest differential, however, lies in its combo mechanic. When in battle, the mechanic will allow you to perform sequential attacks by tapping. You can also find a deep te??am-building system here. This can be see?n in how players, more often than not, need to completely rework their teams based on the opposition.

4. One Piece: Burning Blood

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: PS5, PS4, PSVita, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
  • Release Year: 2016

One Piece: Burning Blood is an arena fighter that allows you to take part in up to 3v3 battles. The game won the hearts of fans by featuring a straightforward but still entertaining combat system. Here, understanding how to efficiently counter your opponent will be key. Another huge highlight lies in its roster. The version released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC offers 44 playable characters and 50 supports. That helps make up for the fact that Burning Blood features an extremely compact m?ain story (covering only the Marineford Arc).

3. One Piece Pirate Warriors 3

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: PS3, PS4, PS5, PSVita, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Release Year: 2016

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 goes all out by featuring huge combat and graphical upgrades when compared to 2. Differently from the latter, however, the game's story mode covers the canon of the series until the Dressrosa Arc. As the arc was still ongoing when the game was released, PW3 features an origina??l non-canonical ending for it.

There are very few things not to love?? here, as the added mechanics —such as the Kizuna Rush and Overdrive?made the ga??me as fun as it can be. Its 46-character-long roster also helped.

2. One Piece Pirate Warriors 4

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Release Year: 2020

Although not featuring a massive jump when compared to 3, One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 builds upon it ??by offering a massive roster of more than 60 characters. You can find some wild names here, such as Big Mom, Kaido, and Gear 5 Luffy —the latter available via a DLC. T?he game also made significant changes to combat. Among the tweaks, the biggest one lies in how players can now perform aerial combos.

Pirate Warriors 4 also features a bulky story mode. In it, you can go through the Alabasta, Enies Lobby, Marineford, New World, Whole Cake, and Wano arcs. Like PW3 with Dressrosa, t?he game features a unique non-canon story for Wano.

1. One Piece: Odyssey

Image via Bandai Namco

  • Available on: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Release Year: 2023

In One Piece: Odyssey, you follow the Straw Hats after they shipwreck on the island of Watford. The game brings players a true-to-form RPG experience that takes place between the Whole ?Cake and Wano arcs. Among its highlights, we have a huge amount of explorable areas and activities. If you weren’t paying attention, Nintendo shut down the online services for 3DS and Wii U, because the future is forward, baby. Unfortunately, this means that gamers with principles had to step in to preserve what Nintendo was burying with its digital store closures, and one of those things was the Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past DLC maps.

Twitter user Sackchief had a plan to preserve those 56 DLC maps for anyone who wa??nts to experience them after the shutdown in the best way possible, too. There seemed to be no takers on the endeavour until Gronya, stuck in bed and recovering from bowel ulcers, decided to take on t??he difficult task of grinding for the cleanest save file.

//youtu.be/Z8mkaeoJujc?feature=shared

Gronya lays out the entire agonizing process in the embedded video. It i??nvolves keeping the two main protagonists dead while temporary party member Kiefer grinds his way to invulnerability to get to the point where the DLC Tablets could be obta??ined.

I’m going to be real with you: I don’t know enough about Dragon Quest VII and its DLC to know why this was necessary. I didn't get into the series until about 2014 or 2015 when I was sad and lonely and my only escape was sprawling myself across the couch watching GameCenter CX and playing Japanese games.

It seems as though this was done not because it was the only way to preserve the content but the best way. Gronya even says that this could have been done in 10 hours wi?thout Super-Kiefer. Obviously, this was done for a reason, otherwise Gronya (and another user named DaniPhoFani) wouldn’t have gone to such lengths.

However, I admire the effort. It probably would have been better if Nintendo had just kept the infrastructure or designed it with more perpetuity in mind. Maybe Square Enix will one day port Dragon Quest VII again with the DLC either intact or just recreated?. We can’t count on that. So, for now, we have the hard-fought save file available on the Internet Arc??????????????????????????hive.

After it was revealed that one of the final Super Mario Maker levels on 3DS and Wii U ??that had never been beaten was cheated, Team 0% went ahead and beat it anyway.

Nintendo announced last year that it would shut down all 3DS and Wii U online servers on April 8, 2024. Since then, Team 0% has been working tirelessly to complete every Super Mario Maker level before those servers go down and the game is unplayable. A month or so ago?, they were left with one level to go, Trimming the Herbs, but it was then revealed that the l??evel was cheated and illegitimate. But that didn't stop the group from completing it.

Trimming the Herbs has been completed without the use of cheats in Super Mario Maker

A couple of weeks ago, Team 0% reached the point where there was just one Super Mario Maker left for it to complete: Trimming the Herbs. The group has been tracking this with a website anyone can check. After Trimming the Herbs gained traction on social media, the original creator, Ahoyoo, published a series of posts explaining how t??hey'd used speedrunning tech to help them complete it and get it uploaded.

For those who don't know, Super Mario Maker levels can't be ??uploaded unless the creator can complete them to avoid any impossible levels hitting the servers. Ahoyoo claims they made this level for competition and intentionally used speedrunning technology, informing the judges of the competition ahead of time, but it was uploaded regardless.

With this win, Team 0% has completed its goal: successfully finishing every user-generated Super Mario Maker level. Whether in some fit of madness or stubbornness, user sanyx91smm2 took it upon themselves to keep trying and finally completed Trimming the Herbs two days before the server shutdown. Their video reaction is priceless and exactly how I'd sound ?in this si??tuation.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7yvVJbji0U

As a result, Team 0%'s website now has a 101% completion rate because, against all odds, it has also added a cheated level to those it completed. This is a true world first becau??se not even this level's creator could finish it, and I can't think of a more fitting end to this quest.

Furthermore, if the bounties on this level, which grew greatly before it was revealed to be cheated, are upheld, sanyx91smm2 stands to be paid $2,500 in cash and $1,100 in gift cards alongside a selection of other promise?d rewards for a human completion of Trimming the Herbs. After months of pushing to finish every Super Mario Maker 1 level before 3DS and Wii U servers close forever, the final one has been cleared, though it's on a technicality? instead of s??kill.

Team 0%, a group of Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 players dedicated to clearing every level in both games, has been working for weeks to complete the final few levels from the first game before servers make it impossible to play. Nintendo announced last year that it would shut down all 3DS and ??Wii U servers in early ??April 2024. This spurred Team?? 0% on to complete every level sooner, but its final win has come more as a wet fart than a bang.

Super Mario Maker 1's Trimming the Herbs level was cheated

trimming the herbs super mario maker

For the last week or so, the only level Team ?0% hadn't managed to comp?lete was Trimming the Herbs. This level is incredibly challenging, and as of yesterday, it was revealed that it was actually somehow cheated. For context, you have to complete any level you make in Super Mario Maker before it can be uploaded because the servers would be flooded with impossible levels and ruin t??he fun otherwise.

//twitter.com/Ahoyoo_Twitch/status/1771286931994780106

The level's creator, Ahoyo, owned up to the fact that Trimming the Herbs is an illegitimate level and was still uploaded to the Super Mario Maker 1 servers. There's a lot of lingo in the thread t??hey've used to explain what happened that makes the situation seem more confusing than it is, so I'll simplify it for ??you.

Trimming the Herbs was created and uploaded in 2017. Ahoyo planned to raise awareness of it as a super difficult level and then reveal that TAS (tool-assisted speedruns) existed for Super Mario Maker 1. Ho???wever, not all went as planned, and Trimming the Herbs flew under the radar until this year, when Team 0% popularized it in its effort to complete it before early April.

So why didn't this cause a huge amount of backlash for Ahoyo? Well, over the past week. It seems to have done just that. I'm not exactly sure why the level wasn't flagged sooner. Allegedly, it was shown during the competition it was made for, and the TAS?? exploit was revealed to the judges ??ahead of their viewing, so it should have been caught then.

Ahoyo has apologized for causing havoc but I don't think the blame lies entirely with them. Other illegitimate levels have been uploaded to Super Mario Maker and disqualified by Team 0% in its efforts before, so this is nothing new. What it means is that Team 0% completed its mammoth task with its clearance of?? The Last Dance??, and that should be recognized ??as a huge achievement.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=siz4oB4CGKo&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fjbsgame.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title

Fans aren't actually that angry about Trimming the Herbs using tools. The fact that it was uploaded at all is impressive and shows that Nintendo's system for the game is flawed. I think the best way to look at this is as a complete record of Super Mario Maker 1. A group of players took it upon themselves to explor??e every legitimate level before the game was lost forever due to its server dependence, and that's amazing.

Trimming the Herbs is a fun footnote in the archive of levels T??eam 0% has put together. It's a positive outcome t??hat goes even further than what this community was aiming to do because it's uncovered a drama, heist, or mystery that no one actually knew existed. While many of us would obviously rather Nintendo didn't shut down servers and kill games in this way, that act has brought people together and created a fantastic story intrinsically linked to those servers. In one way, they'll never truly die because this story can live on forever.

When Super Mario Maker was initially released for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in 2015, it's hard to say if Nintendo knew exactly what it was setting itself up for. Opening up the opportunity for fans to creat??e their own Mario levels and upload them for the community to play is a fun concept, and everyone was able to fi?nd something they loved about it.

However, as we draw closer to Nintendo's server shutdown, players are racing to complete as many levels as possible before they're taken away. In fact, one group is taking this so far that they're just one level away from having completed every level in Super Mario Maker. This level, "Trimming? the Herbs," may just be the toughest in the game's?? history.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=siz4oB4CGKo

Why do players want to complete every Super Mario Maker level?

There are a ridiculous number of levels in Super Mario Maker, ??made by both die-hard players and professional game devs alike. ?While the sequel may have drawn most players away, there's been a dedicated group continuing to make and play levels in the original release.

Late last year, Nintendo announced it would be ending server support for the 3DS and Wii U on April 9, 2024, at 9 AM JST. This means that all games with online elements will become unplayable, including Super Mario Maker. With just under a month to go, a small community is working together to complete every level. You can actually che?ck out the progress they've made on their official website.

At the time of writing, 99.99% of all levels have been completed. The only one that remains is called "Trimming the Herbs," and it's an absolute nightmare.

I was never good at Mario platformers, but even I can understand that this level is pretty much impossible. In order to upload a level for others to play in Super Mario Maker, you ?had to complete it yourself. That's what makes this so inf??uriating for those trying to get through it. The level is clearly possible, but it requires such frame-perfect play that you almost need the blueprint of where to go and when to get through it.

There's some discussion out there about the level having clears registered on it. However, those have been detected as cheats because there's some??thing in the results that gives them away. Those results show that a user simply changed the code to tell the game the player has completed them.

That being said,? the community seems confident "Trimming the Herbs" will be completed before Nintendo shuts down the 3DS and Wii U servers forever. It feels like this group is one discovery away from making a major breakthrough, and it really is, depending on how you look at it. Humans have always had an intrinsic need to explore, uncover mysteries, and map out their surroundings. That's exactly?? what's happening here, just with the user-created levels of an incredibly popular Mario title.

Time marches forward, and with it, gaming must also keep itself relevant. A few months back, we talked about how Nintendo was ending online support for two of its now-defunct consoles. A recent update from the company has since narrowed down exactly ??when t?hat's going to be happening.

As of April 8 ?at exactly 4 p.m. PDT ?most online services for the 3DS and Wii U will be shut down for good. That's according to a recent Twitter post, which leads to a customer support page that goes into more detail.

//twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1749963072998166670

The information says the discontinuation will be for the following: New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL, 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, Wii U Deluxe, and Wii U Basic. This will affect "online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution." A second tweet says it's possible to "merge your unused Nintendo eShop balance to your Nintendo Account" for use on the Switch. Details about that can be found here.

A number of caveats

While the servers themselves are being turned off, Nintendo does say that players "will still be able to use features and game modes that do not requi??re online communication." It also won't be ending the StreetPass feature for now, as that uses local communication and do?esn't require online connectivity.

For the time being, you will still be able to update and redownload purchased games, and the service shutdown won't have an immediate impact on Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter. People ?should still be able to download update data and redownload purchased software and DLC from the eShop. Again, that can all change in the future.

I was honestly surprised online was still supported for the Wii U and 3DS. The latter was discontinued in 2020, while the former's lifecycle was ended back ?in 2017, almost seven years ago. Shows how much I have my finger on the pulse of outdated Nintendo consoles.

Stop reading this article and consider picking up Super Mario RPG on Switch.

I'll make the same pitch I made decades ago when I came across it on the SNES: it's an all-comers RPG. No matter how much you ??might dislike the genre or Mario as a concept, it has plenty of ways to win you over. It's also perfect for folks newer to RPGs as a whole and there are enough hooks present for veterans.

If you're already on board or can't be swayed, there's plenty of other stuff to sift through too. Persona 5 Tactica and Bluey: The Videogame both arrive on November 17; and Howl, Backpack Hero, Passpartout 2: The Lost Artist, and Enjoy the Diner all came out as a result of the recent Indie World Showcase.

Hogwarts Legacy kind of came and went earlier this year (twice, if you count the PS4/Xbox One ports), and now it's about to release a third time: on Switch. It's due out on November 14, and depending on who you ask, the below debut game trailer is either miraculous or messy. It really depends on your taste in Switch ports. The real test is going to be how it plays and if it can maintain a consistent framerate.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will offer some counterprogramming. Described as a "chaotic rhythm adventure," this single-system multiplayer game looks promising. It's out on November 14. Plus, a bunch of other games are out between now and the next week, so check th??em all out below!

Every so often, I think of how crazy Sega's Dreamcast era was. It came out with a huge bang, then fizzled so hard that Sega got out of the console game completely. Given that I still play my Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD, and Dreamcast in my spare time, it's like it never died: but it did! That's why it's so amazing to me that the Sonic franchise has not only endured but is constantly debuting on a system run by its former competitor, Nintendo. All that to say: Sonic Superstars is the main eS??hop game coming out this week, and will be out on? October 17.

Beyond that, Fotnite, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Overwatch 2, Fall Guys, and Apex Legends are all running Halloween events, w??hich you can read about below:

  • Fortnite–During Fortnitemares 2023, it’s time to call in a vampire hunter ?you! Match the stakes of Kado Thorne’s threat with the new Wood Stake Shotgun. Don’t stop at just vampire hunting ?jump into the Horde Rush limited-time experience, complete quests for in-game rewards and more! Fortnitemares 2023 runs until Nov. 3 at 2 a.m. ET.
  • Disney Dreamlight Valley–Prepare for plenty of frights and delights in this season’s new Haunted Holiday Star Path! Trick and treat yourself to various items and cosmetics inspired by Disney’s Hocus PocusPirates of the CaribbeanTim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Disneyland’s The Haunted Mansion. Additionally, from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1, the seasonal candy event is returning to the Valley! Search your Plaza for colorful candy buckets to unlock Dreamlight duties and prizes.
  • Overwatch 2–Starting Oct. 10, team up with Pharah as she leads the forces of light against Moira and her allies of darkness. Defeat powerful bosses and level up your hero in the new Trials of Sanctuary game mode. Travel to a tropical paradise with the new Samoa map, try out Sombra’s new ability kit and look out for Roadhog’s rework later in the season. Explore seasonal cosmetics in the shop or earn them with the Battle Pass!
  • Fall Guys–On Oct. 17, the Trick or Yeet Fame Pass will help pack the Blunderdome with fanciful, fearsome fancy dress. Highlights include the gnawsome Bat-Tastic Costume for bitey Beans and the Buff Guy Costume that adds insta-muscles without the workout. Scary never looked cuter than the Bad Beast or Pawly Repaired Costumes.
  • Apex Legends–Until Oct. 31, embrace your dark side in Tricks N?Treats Trios, where you’ll find candy that boosts your EVO level and Ultimate charge, plus Copycat Kits that grant extra Legend abilities. Drop into After Dark versions of Olympus, Kings Canyon and World’s Edge. Unlock 24 limited-time items before the event ends and automatically receive Revenant’s Prestige Skin “Apex Nightmare.?!-- wp:list -->

It's a fairly big week for the Nintendo eShop, as Mortal Kombat 1 is hitting the figurative stands, and is technically available now in early access with the typically-WB exclusive Shang Tsung character. Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster are out today, and Gloomhaven launches on Switch on September 18.

The latter is a really interesting release, as it's a port of the digitized version of Gloomhaven proper: a massively successful board game Kickstarter that launched in 2017. Having played through the entire campaign I can attest to?? how fun it is with the right group, and while? the digital version doesn't quite hit the same for me, it's fun to play through bite-sized missions on the go.

It's a great week for indies on the Nintendo eShop, as Fae Farm (September 8) headlines a pretty impressive set of games that will be arriving through September 13. Super Bomberman R 2 and Gunbrella are dropping on that exact day, with MythForce (that Saturday morning cartoon-inspired game) launching just a day earlier on September 13.

In what is decidedly not an indie release, NBA 2K24 rounds out the week on September 8. Hey, variety is the spice of life! You can find the rest of the lineup below, including Escape Academy: The Complete Edition, which was a ton of fun on othe?r platforms (the Switch port quality is still ?TBD, so keep that in mind).

Rune Factory 3, which debuted in 2009 on DS (wow!), is getting the remaster treatment for Switch. It's out on September 5, and will bring the farming/combat hybrid series back into the fray. So what's new? Well, there's a "newlywed mode," which entails standalone quests based on the 11 people you can marry in the game; as well as a "hell difficulty" setting. Given how much there is to do in the game already, that's not a bad deal. Chants of Sennaar is also out, which has?? a wild premise and an interesting art styl??e.

You can find the rest of the eSho??p offerings below! It's a pretty standard week on that? front.

Remember Samba de Amigo? No longer relegated to serving as a racing game cameo who was once prominently featured in a fra??nchise of old: the monkey with attitude re??turns in Samba de Amigo: Party Central on Switch.

Sea of Stars is also out on August 29, and fascinatingly, serves as a prequel to Sabotage Studio's wild 2018 project The Messenger. Blasphemous 2 (which we reviewed!) is out today, rounding out a pret??ty strong showing for the Switch eShop, with three brand new games this week. That explains why the rest of the lineup is smaller (relative to other weeks).

We knew that Red Dead Redemption II would be coming to Switch, and now it's finally here! Whether it's actually worth the (checks notes) $50 Rockstar is charging for it is one thing: but at least it comes with the Undead Nightmare DLC, which is one of the silliest romps t??he studio ?has ever created.

In other Switch eShop news, Quake II was surprised-released, and we even reviewed it (on PC)! This classic still holds up, but if you want something newer, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is out on August 18. Here's the gist of this extremely Jet Set Radio-looking game: "Red is a graffiti writer who lost his head and instead has an AI robohe?ad. In search of his roots, he joins the Bomb Rush Crew, Tryce and Bel, who are aiming to go All City. Togethe??r they discover who it was that cut off his head and how deeply Red’s human side is linked to the graffiti world."

If none ??of those catch your interest, there's, as usual, a ton of other stuff to sift through.

In a bizarre move, Red Dead Redemption will be available on Nintendo Switch for $49.99 on August 17, and uh, the reaction to that price has been "mixed," to put it lightly! I mean, I guess it does have the Undead Nightmare DLC and the Game of the Year bonus content, but you can get all of that and more for much cheaper on other platforms. The Switch version (alongside t?he upcoming PS4 edition) also does not include multiplayer capabilities. In any case, the choice is yours.

Moving Out 2 is the other major release, and that's out on August 15. This is ??a day-and-date release with other platforms, which is always nice to see. Oh, and there are tons of other things out if you want to comb through the below list!

WrestleQuest is the big game on offer this week for Nintendo Switch, which provides an RPG-like format for arcade wrestling action. I just recently replayed some WWE games and let me tell you: I'm in the mood for a good brawler! Brotato is another featured game from Nintendo coming your way and features some classic Robotron/modern Vampire Survivors horde-style action.

You have plenty of ?t??hings to choose from! It's a good week for indie variety on the eShop.

The time has come once again for another fabled third party Switch exclusive to hit the eShop, and this time, we're getting Disney Ilusion Island. We actually have a full review up for it, so if you're?? interested, check it out!?? It's a particularly interesting game in that it offers up four player co-op with difficulty sliders for individual players. In other words, ??it's made for the whole family.

Other bigger releases include Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons (which we also have a review for!), as well as Venba (w?hich is described as a "wholesome narrative cooking game set in the 1980s," which is going to ignite a lot of interes?t).

The time has come for another big fanfare-filled first-party release week! Nintendo is dropping Pikmin 4 on July 21, and there's quite a bit of ruckus being made compared to prior entries. Nintendo is going all-out for this one, with tons of merch, promotions, and advertising. And given our?? review, it wasn't all in vain!

As a bit of counterprogramming, EA Sports FC 24 is also out, along with all of the games below. The eShop is on fire this week! It's about time given some recen?t slow periods, and the storm of Q3 is imminent.

Also, Mario Kart 8 DLC

Manic Mechanics is the marquee game showcased by Nintendo this week, and it's coming to the Nintendo Switch eShop today. It's part of a long series of "chaotic co-op" titles, where you'll need to repair vehicles for points while dealing with explosions, animal stampedes, and more wacky hazards. So far, it sounds decent! Nintendo managed to get their paws in the door on the eShop this week too, as they've just released the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Wave 5 DLC. Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is out on several platforms (Switch included!) on July 12, and it's definitely the big dog on campus this coming week. If you don't remember Oxenfree, it's a critical darling adventure game that came out in early 2016 and swept a ton of award shows. Now, it's back! The gist is ??that the sequel is set five years after the original, with a new protagonist (Riley).

While we wait for Pikmin 4 in a few weeks, the rest of the eShop is crawling along slowly. There are 24 additional games coming out this week, which sounds like a lot, but it's fairly low for t?he 30-40-on-the-regular s?torefront: which is becoming increasingly crowded.

During this post-Tears of the Kingdom slump, the Nintendo Switch eShop is seemingly back on track again, with a release that's...technically first-party, but might just confuse some people. It's none other than Everybody 1-2 Switch, the follow-up to the bizarre March 2017 party game 1-2 Switch. Yes, it? was developed and published by Nintendo??, and it's out today.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is also on the docket, as is Crime O' Clock, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, and the Lara Croft Collection (which contains two isometri?c combat/puzzler spinoffs).

In case you missed it, Pikmin 1 and 2 HD have been re-released on Switch. It was all done in the form of a surprise announcement in a June 2023 Nintendo Direct, as Nintendo tends to do! This is a great day for preservation, as you can pick up Pikmin 1-4 on Switch by the time the latest iteration arrives on July 21. The 3DS sequel/spinoff Hey! Pikmin remains on the outside, but who knows: Nintendo will probably get around to? porting it one day.

Oh, and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is out too, which our own CJ Andriessen enjoyed quite a bit. Between these two titles and a Super Meat Boy puzzle spinoff (Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine), it's an interesting week for the Nintend??o eShop. Variety is the spice of life.

It's another slowish week, as the main games Nintendo is highlighting this we?ek are of the live service variety.

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3 dropped recently with its Optimus Prime-flavored season pass, and there are more updates for Disney Dreamlight Valley (The Remembering), Rocket League (Season 11), Overwatch (Season 5), and Disney Speedstorm (Season 2). Wait, Disney Speedstorm just dropped Season 2?

It really is the "early summer of live service" so far, post-Zelda. One of the next big releases is Final Fantasy XVI on June 22 on PS5, which will end the streak. In terms of Switch games from AAA publishers, Crash Team Rumble is next on the slate on June 20.

It's a bright day fo??r the Ninte?ndo eShop, and I don't just mean that figuratively: like, the marquee games on offer are literally bright and in your face!

One of the most gleaning video game franchises of all time, Katamari Damacy, is getting a remaster this week in the form of We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie. It's a re-release of We Love Katamari with extras, including the ability to play as a "young King of All Cosmos" in challenges, and a selfie photo mode. Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is o?ut as well, and the art style alone is worth checking out.

The rest of the week is a bit less packed than normal, but that's great actually! We could use a breather after the $70 Tears of the Kingdom and the flood of other releases.

Also, Maquette

It's an indie week on the Nintendo eShop, with the highly anticipated Cassette Beasts launching on the Switch. In a nutshell, you'll record monster abilities on retro cassette tapes. Yep, it's just as unique as it sounds! Maquette is also coming out today, which is described ?as a "first-person recursive puzzle game" where "objects are simultaneously tiny and staggeringly huge." Consider me interested.

Also, Convergence: A League of Legends Story

We're back on for a hoppin' eShop week everyone! Following Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and...pretty much nothing else, two marquee games are featured this week, including LEGO 2K Drive (which we'll have a review of shortly!), plus Convergence: A League of Legends Story.

Of course, some of these game titles just beg to be followed up on, and this week it's "911 Cannibal." Here's the elevator pitch: "In this horror game you are a kidnapped teenager. Maniac - cannibal keeps you in his creepy house. Hide and search items that can help you find a way out of the scary place and survive the nightmare. Solve puzzles to get to inaccessible places. And do not forget about attentiveness - you need to carefully cover up your tracks so that the maniac does not suspect anything." It's four bucks, and has decent Steam reviews. It wins the "weird pick of the week" award!
