During the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, Microsoft revealed a brand new trailer for Age of Mythology: Retold, the remake of the classic mythology-based RTS title. The trailer contains some stunning gameplay that's been brought up to modern standards, an?d includes glimpses of the game's epic expansion: The Titans.

We've known Age of Mythology was getting a remake for a while now, but only during this showcase has it been confirmed that we'll be able to play it on September 4, 2024. Not only that, it's coming to Game Pass on day one, and for me, that makes it an easy game to justify your subscript??ion for the month with. The original was a fantastic RTS game that allowed you to explore all sorts of mythologies and use the power of the gods to help ?your civilization prosper while crushing others.

Age of Mythology: Retold revitalizes entire mythological planes and thrusts you into the action at the heart of its RTS gameplay

The gameplay that stood out to me most in this trailer is that which features Titans. These gigantic monsters are creatures you had to work for hours to summon. Once you did, they'd crush everything on the battlefield o??r clash with those your enemies had summoned. The expansion took everything the base game did so well and took it up to eleven, and I'm so glad to see that it will be included in this remake.

Age of Mythology was initially released in 2002. All my friends had been playing Age of Empires, but I'd only just gotten a PC capable of running games when this dropped, so I jumped in. As a huge RTS enthusiast and fan of ancient mythologies, this game was heaven for me, and everything that made it feel great back then has been pre??served for modern audiences in this remake.

In it, you'll take control of a civilization that, much like Kratos in the God of War series, moves between mythologies, w??orking w??ith the gods they encompass to build powerful settlements and fight back against the powers of evil.

You get buffs, superpowers, and units that are all themed around the god you're worshipping at the time. Mixing and matching is possible, meaning you can ??craft a settlement that can knock anyone back to the stone age.

The Titans expansion added colossal beings to the game th?at completely changed the way you played. I believe that the remake is going to change everything again, inviting new players to the community to master base building and war between not just factions of humans, but the gods as well.

Xbox Game Studios is currently hosting a New Year, New Age live stream to celebrate everything Age of Empires and reveal updates about its future. However, it's not all about Age of Empires. After being teased in 2022, Age of Mythology: Retold has been revealed. A definitive edition of the original classic RTS Age of Mythology, Retold will release on PC and Xbox Se??rise X|S later th??is year.

A bit more mystical

If you've never played the original Age of Mythology but are a fan of RTS like Age of Empires, you are in for quite a treat. Mythology takes the foundation of Age of Empires but adds a mystical twist to it, allowing players to call upon various gods to help them in combat. Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atlantean pantheons are all options in Age of Mythology.

As great as Age of Empires is, there has always been something special to me about Age of Mythology. Being able to summon Nidhogg or call in a massive thunderstorm not only felt fun but felt like it ad??ded a unique element to the RTS genre.

Age of Mythology: Retold i??s primarily a graphical upgrade to the original, mixing its classic gameplay elements with modernized visuals. It will include the 50-mission campaign as well as an all-new Arena of the Gods feature that allows you to complete all new trials either solo or co-op with friends as you take on challenges as the gods themselves battle it out.

While no specific release date was given, Microsoft Game Studios did indicate Age of Mythology: Retold will be released later this year on PC, Xbox ?Series X|S, and be available Day One on Game Pass.
