Hatsune Miku is a decent workout game

Typing this with sweat streaming down my face, I can confirm Fitness Boxing Hatsune Miku game ?gives you a pretty strenuous and enjoyable workout. The problem is if this game will keep you coming back regularly as it gets repetitive too quickly.

Upbeat, yet monotonous workouts

When you play a Hatsune Miku game, you expect upbeat, sometimes fast-paced music mixed with rhythm elements. You get that with one side of this Fitness Boxing game, but the majority of it has you jabbing and uppercutting to unlicensed music. You see, the music of Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku comprises mostly original music ??and some inclusions of Miku songs you know and love. Thankfully, the original music doesn't sound like a track from a boring infomercial and is engaging to move your body to.

Fitness Boxing Hatsune Miku game gives you a good sweat.
Image via Aksys Games

The game itself has you stringing together jabs, uppercuts, straights, and other boxing moves together. As the workout proceeds, it will slowly layer in a combination of strikes to keep you moving. You'll have a Hatsune Miku character like Kagamine Len acting as your mirror while there's a coach directing you through the routine. Sometimes Len or Miku chime in to say you're doing a good job, and thankfully, their movements accurately portray each move you have to perform. The animation is well-impl??emented.

The game's routines often move at a glacial pace for the first half of the workout, making the process somewhat boring to play. However, as the action picks up, Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku gets more engaging to play. It's a good respite and alternative from Ring Fit Adventure, which desperately needs a sequel, by the way. Overall, it can be fun in short bursts, but don't expect Fitness Boxing to keep you entertained every day. Mix it up with other titles like Just Dance or the aforementioned Ring Fit.

Overly long routines

Some of the routines, however, feel overly long, sometimes lasting between 10 to 15 minutes, revolving around the same type of move like an uppercut. It would be better for the daily workouts to include shorter bursts of original routines from Fitness Boxing and implement more Piapro songs that fe??el sparse in comparison.

When a Piapro song is playing, the game gets far more exciting. The punches are flying and sometimes go too fast for you to catch up. It might be my large frame or the game itself, but the punch timing doesn't seem consistent enough when the action is faster. Additionally, when you have to swerve to the left and the right, the Joycon doesn't seem to pick up this motion?? well enough.

//youtu.be/iq2NiLcXcwk

Lots of stats to keep track of

Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku tracks a lot of data for you to look back at. Ther?e are graphs with your estimated calorie burn, and you can keep inputting your weight, so you can see your progression on-screen. It shows your BMI, punches thrown, the number of times certain body parts are trained and all sorts of information by day, week, and month.

Not enough unlockables

One thing that the developer of Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku missed out on the unlockables. You have three characters to unlock with Hatsune Miku, and a few?? costumes to unlock for each, including their original outfits. They each start with a fitness get-up at the beginning. There are only three costumes per character, with a fourth coming for Miku via DLC.

It feels like a missed opportunity to add more outfits by completing your fitness goals. Sega's Project Diva series has many to collect during a playthrough, and it would have been great to get additional styles for the characters to wear in Fitness Boxing. The silver lining, on the other hand, is that th??ere are a bunch of songs to unlock by using the in-game currency you earn b?y working out.

Overall, Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku is a decent alternative to the likes of Ring Fit Adventure. I??t acts as a great detour from your usual wor??kout routine, but there's not enough substance to make it a daily fix.

The strategy RPG is making its way to Nintendo's portable console

Tactics fans keep getting more games, and that now includes a surprising port from Aksys Games. Record of Agarest War is making its w??ay to Nintendo Switch in March 2023.

This strategy RPG originally released in 2007 in Japan, eventually making a western debut on the? PlayStation 3 in 2009. It's since been ported to many other platforms and now, years and years later, it pops up again on Nintendo Switch.

You can check out the trailer here:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjCvtrHq0kM

N??o details have been listed yet about?? whether this will have any new enhancements or features.

Generations of war

If you're unfamiliar with Record of Agarest War, it's a strategy RPG with a dating twist. Developed as a collaboration between Compile Heart, Red Entertainment, and Ide?a Factory, you play as severa??l different protagonists embroiled in conflict.

But the ??way you navigate through the plot is, well, through generations. As the first protagonist, you can romance and marry one of several party members. Then, your child goes on to be protagonist number 2. This plays out across several generations, with the chosen bride affecting the next hero's stats and aspects of their appearance.

So yes, fans of Fire Emblem: Awakening's child-unit min-maxing might want to take note. This is a bit of a surprise, as Agarest War has been a more niche series in the pantheon of SRPG discussion. But the genre has been surging, with both new titles and remasters of old classics. It looks like Aksys wasn't going to let Agarest War sit on the sideli??nes for this tactical resurgence.

The news arrived as part of an Aksys announcement stream, alongside several other game announcements. Cuddly Forest Friends is set to arrive on Switch in 2023, Spooky Spirit Shooting Gallery heads to Switch in summer 2023, and Tengoku Struggle -Strayside- is set for Switch in 2024.

It's not quite a relaxing island vacation

Developer Dreamloop Games and publisher Aksys are teaming up for a new social thriller. Inescapable is a new adventure game, directly inspired by Danganronpa, about how far some might go for cash and clout.

Described as a social thriller / ontological mystery game, Inescapable was revealed over the weekend as part of Aksys Games' Anime Expo 2022 panel. It?? seems to wear its inspiration on its sleeve, though it has a few twists of its own.

Inescapable follows Harrison, one of 11 contestants who are kidnapped and made to take part in a reality TV show. At the end of their stay, the co?ntestants get $500,000. But there are no rules, and no escape.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZIuIlh0dlc

No way home

It seems likely that, given time, some suspicion and murder might begin to take place. Much of it seems to be about mistrust, so I'm curious what the motivation would be to turn these contestant??s on each othe??r.

Considering the last Danganronpa game (or at least the last mystery-focused one) was in 2017, I'm intrigued by what's being put together here. It's got similar vibes to the second Danganronpa and its ??summer vacation setting, with some style all its own. I dig the plastic standees used in the world here, for example.

So far, we've just seen some dialogue windows and cutscenes. I'm curious what the actual mystery and, if inspired by Danganronpa, murder side of Inescapable looks like.

Dreamloop has been steadily building up work though, partnering for technical support on several games. Its last collaboration with Aksys was on 2018's Switch release of Stardust Galaxy Warriors: Stellar Climax.

Now, it's tackling the thriller and suspicion of an island vacation gone awry. We'll see how it comes together when Inescapable launches f?or PlayStation,?? Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC sometime in 2023.

The cup runneth over for visual novel and otome fans

There may have been way too man?y people trying to get into this year's Anime Expo in Los Angeles this year, but I can sympathize with them. After all, two straight years of online-only events has a lot of us jonesing to get back out there and be around those who share our interest in Japanese entertainment. Not only is the expo the place to see all the upcoming toys you'll be buying and shows you'll be watching, but it's also a great source of game announcements.? Case in point: Aksys Games and its Anime Expo reveals.

The specialty publisher announced seven games it's localizing in the west in 2023. Most of the games will release exclusively for Nin??tendo Switch, but a few will also make ??appearances on other hardware.

Inescapable Screenshot

Inescapable

Of the games announced, the one I'm most interested in is Inescapable from Dreamloop Games. This social survival game casts players as a contestant on a reality television show where 11 strangers are dropped on an island?? with absolutely no rules. Anybody who makes it to the end ?of the show walks away with $500,000. The game is said to explore the depths of human desire and what pushes people to lust after clout, wealth, and their desires.

In other words, it's Westworld!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZIuIlh0dlc

That one is going on my radar, but the six other games are worth keeping an eye on as well if you've enjoy??ed  Aksys's past output. Tho??se titles include:

Shuuen no Virche ~ErroR: Salvation

The English title is pending on this one, but ErroR: Salvation covers a country possessed by the god of death where people are cursed to die by the age of 23. A young woman named Ceres, who has a knack for hastening the deaths of those she meets, puts a pause on her plans to commit suicide when she meets a stranger named the "Watchman of Death." ErroR: Salvation will release next year excl?usively for Nintendo Switch.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II

The sequel to 2018's Death Mark: Death Mark will release next year for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The trailer is one of those "age-restricted" YouTube videos, so click here to give it a watch. Coincidentally, Spirit Hunter: Death Mark and its sequel, Spirit Hunter: NG, are both on sale right now in the eShop.

Norn9: Var Commons & Norn9: Last Era

Norn9: Var Commons was originally released back in 2014 for the PlayStation Vita. Aksys Games localized the game for western audiences the next year, and in 2023, it's porting the game to Switch along with its fan disc sequel, Norn9: Last Era, which is being localized for the very first time. Norn9 features the adventures of a young prodigy named Sorata Suzuhara who is thrust back in time to 1919 aboard the ship known as Norn9. The first game covers Sorata's interactions with 11 others as they explore the secrets in Norn. Last Era features a continuation of their adventures in three parts. Both Norn9: Var Commons and Norn9: Last Era will release exclusively for Switch.

Radiant Tale

In Radiant Tale, players will take control of Tifalia, an innkeeper who's given the chance of a lifetime when a strange group calling themselves CIRCUS ask her to be their new producer. I going to assume that amusing antics and passionate romance await Tifalia on her journey. Radiant Tale w??ill release next year exclusively for ??Nintendo Switch.

Pups & Purrs Pet Shop

Last but not least is Pups & Purrs Pet Shop, which is easily the cutest game of the? bunch. As you might expect, this game will give players control over their own pet shop where they can wo??rk and play with adorable animals. Look for it next year on Nintendo Switch.

Fly the Anthro Airlines

Chocks away, my furry friends, AkSys Games has released its cute, anthropomorphic shmup Horgihugh and Friends on Switch, bringing its challenging? but totes-adorbs sky fighting action to the Nintendo platform. It is available to download from the eShop today, priced at around $3??0.

You can check out a trailer for the fun-looking arcade blaster below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbFFTZ706ew

In the aftermath of a brutal world war, a fantastical, furry take on the planet has fully disarmed itself of all weapons in order to prevent?? such an atrocity from taking place again. Unfortunately, the skies are now under siege from an invading intergalactic force, The Gozareans, and with nowhere else left to turn, it is up to a party of retired pilots to take to the air in their vintage battle planes, squaring up against the inv??aders despite being both outmanned and severely outgunned.

Horgihugh and Friends boasts cheerful, cartoonish artwork by industry veteran Kou (Shantae, Mega Man X2) and a rousing soundtrack composed by Motoaki Furukawa (Metal Gear, Policenauts). As animalkind's last hope, players will blast their way through six stages of pew-pew action, gathering power-ups, swiftly dodging a skyful of projectiles, and taking on a seemingly endless army ??of drones, captained by no less tha??n 13 unique boss characters.

I'd been hoping to get to this release for review, but the relentlessness of the Not-E3 news season h??as unfortunately prevented me from doing so. Nevertheless, I'll be sure to check it out. Chocks Away!

Rock the Dragons

Notice this, senpai! As if the race for 2022's Game of the Year was not hot enough, Aksys Games has finally announced that baffling titled anime shmup Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath is officially ?headed west, and will launch on PS?4 and Nintendo Switch this summer.

Developed by Kaminari Games, Burst Forth!! will see our favorite posse of hard-working scaly maidens take to the skies on a mission to escape *checks notes* an evil, sentient, video game program. Let's fucking go. Tohru, Kanna, and Elma will be forced to use their res??pective abilities in perfect synergy as they battle their way through stage after stage of bullet hell mayhem, guided by Miss Kobayashi hersel?f.

//youtu.be/WsKsExhjduM

Each character will harness their own unique long-range, melee, and screen-clearing "Choro-gon Breath" powers, laying waste to waves of malevolent minions and big-screen baddies. As players battle through each stage, they will unlock a gallery of illustrations and concept art created especially for the game by a host of artists pulled from the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid manga and anime series.

While I think it's fair to raise an eyebrow at the above footage, which doesn't exactly recall the energy and intensity of, say, a Cave classic, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath still looks like a colorful and fun time for both fans of the Miss Kobayashi franchise and shmup fans in general. I'll be sure to check it out when it hits ??the skies? later this summer.

After all, we wouldn't want to upset Kanna, would we? We aren't monsters.

Fly the furry skies

Thursday's NGPX presentation brought with it a selection of reveals, release dates, and localization windows for a slew of pint-sized Japanese releases. Among the many super-cute titles added to the calendar was an official western release date for the delightfully titled anthro shmup Horgihugh and Friends, which will take to?? th??e skies on Nintendo Switch June 16.

Set in a colorful fantasy universe Horgihugh and Friends focuses on a population of cute critters who decided to fully disarm their countries in the aftermath of a miserable and lengthy world war. Unfortunately, sometime later, the world is invaded by a strange unknown entity known as the Gozareans. In this newly weaponless society, it is up to retired ace pilots Hugh and Figaro ??to dust off their vintage hobby planes and take to t??he skies, outnumbered and overpowered, in a last-ditch effort to save civilization.

Horgihugh and Friends is a retro-style horizontal shmup th?at tasks one or two players with taking down the Gozarean invaders. The title boasts six challenging stages, punctuated by 13 intense boss battles, unique power-up mechanics, multiple difficulty settings, and an exciting cast of critters to meet and befriend. All of this action ??is stylized in classic pixel visuals, with artwork by Mega Man and Shantae veteran Kou and a score composed by Motoaki Furukawa of Gradius II and Policenauts fame.

Hogihugh and Friends will launch in the west on Nintendo Switch June 16. The Japanese version is also available right now on PC via Steam.

Old-school showdown

During last night's "All Aksys" presentation, Aksys Games announced that its cool-looking fighter Blazing Strike, will be launching this fall on PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch platforms. The publisher?? released two new gameplay videos, showing scraps between characters Shinsuke and Jake.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBG4nWyix8w

First revealed during the summer of 2021, Blazing Strike is a 2D fighting game that hopes the replicate the pixel-based visuals and deep, engaging combat of arcade smash hits such as Capcom's Street Fighter III and SNK's The King of Fighters. The title will utilize a four-button system for attacking alongside seve?ral defensive mechanics, including blocking, parries, and "guard". Additionally, a "Rush" ??mechanic will allow fighters to spend meter to dish out a flurry of attacks, at the risk of entering a groggy state.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=L05kCqh1Dtw

From this early footage, we can certainly see the early-SNK influence, right down to the Art of Fighting-style screen zoom. There's no denying that it is entering an incredibly crowded and competitive market, but with so many titles going the 3D or 2.5D route, perhaps there is still room for classic pixel-based pugilism. (And lots of melodramatic anime games)

Niche publisher Aksys Games has announced that it will be holding a special livestream presentation to spotlight its upcoming selection of video games, visual novels, and other wares. Set to broadcast on February 17, the "All Aksys" stream will spotlight a number of incoming releases, with perhaps the brightest light shining on the rad-looking 2D fighter, Blazing Strike.

As we have previously reported, Aksys' Blazing Strike is a slick-looking smack-'em-up inspired by the Capcom and SNK classics of the '90s. With colorful, stylized pixel visuals, a rocking soundtrack, and a deep and complex fighting system, Blazing Strike hopes to recall grand memories of King of Fighters '98, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, lines of quarters on arcade cabinets, and cigarette butts stubbed into garish carpets. It's loo??king pre?tty special, and I'm definitely keeping an out for this release.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ldsWPI_48A

There will be several other titles showcased during the stream, all of which are for Nintendo Switch, and all of which hope to tweak the joy handles of anime and visual novel fans. Aksys will be offering up gameplay and details for several releases including Variable Barricade, Lover Pretend, Paradigm Paradox, Piofiore: Episodio 1926, and the yet-to-be-localized Kimi wa Yukima ni Koinegau. So even if you're a lover,?? rather than a fighter, it will be worth your time and effort to tune into the stream.

The All Aksys Showcase will be broadcast February 17 at 09:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 18:00 BST. You can check out the action over on Aksys Games official Twitch channel. And, of course, we'll be sure to bring you any partic?ularly exciting details, trailers, or updates here on Destructoid.

Be there for Pups & Purrs Animal Hospital

Ja??panese?? publisher and reliable localizer Aksys Games has announced it will hold a live stream presentation on August 6. The creatively titled "All Aksys" presentation will feature new updates, fresh reveals, and personable chats with various developers, as the publisher shows off its upcoming wares head to PC and consoles in the near future.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s8VckEQ4gU

Among the titles set to make an appearance during the stream are spooky-psychic adventure Daikoru: Agents of Sakuratani, Numskull Games' gang-busting shooter RICO London, Otomate's home-wrecking Otome title Variable Barricade, and the sweet 'n' fuzzy veterinarian simulator Pups & Purrs Animal Hospital. Perhaps the jewel in the All Aksys crown will be a brand new update on the slick-looking 2D fighting title Blazing Strike, which? turned the heads of many old-school fight fans heads when it first sh?owed up back in May.

Along with the above release, Aksys Games hints that there will also be a few new reveals and surprises. While perhaps not the biggest or most anticipated live stream on the block, the Aksys presentation has some pretty neat releases in its line-up, and will probably be worth a look for anyone who likes their games a little on the esoteric side. The All Aksys stream will kick off August 6 at 09:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 17:00 BST live on the official Aksys Games Twitch channel. Of course, we ??will ?be sure to bring you all the news and reveals right here on Destructoid.

Scanline Slugfest

Publisher AkSys Games is feeling the 1990s with the announcement of its brand new fighting title, Blazing Strike. Taking the genre back to its roots, Blazing Strike promises heavy-hitting, 2?D, pixel-based throwdowns when it launches on PC and consoles next year.

"I was always fond of classic fighting games and I wanted to make a fun fighting game with an emphasis on mobility," said Mark Chung, founder of Blazing Strike developer RareBreed Makes Games. "Our goal is to create an homage to the classic pixel art-based 2D fi?ghters, but with updated game mechanics that not only will bring nostalgia to 90’s arcade kids but will offer something new and entertaining to all gamers, regardless of whether they have played fighting games before."

The footage below is taken from the title's failed 2019 Kickstarter. As such, it might be unrepresentative of AkSys' revitalized project, but it still offers an example of Blazing Strike's old-school style.

Blazing Strike features an audio/visual design that recalls the heady days of queues in arcades, quarters on counters, and 100 MEG SHOCKS! Blazing Strike will be a four-button fighter and will feature multiple forms of defense — including parries — as well as a "Rush" meter that must be smartly managed in order to pull off flashy combos. In addition, Blazing Strike will feature Arcade and Story modes, as well?? as top-notch online play powered by GGPO technology.

No one can deny that the fighting market is particularly crowded at this moment in time, with plenty of new mid-tier releases already on the horizon. But as the industry pushes further toward the 2.5D/3D model aesthetic, perhaps the rawness of a true 2D, pixel-based fighter will help Blazing Strike find an audience among the Tekkens and Mortal Kombats of the world. Hell, you still see tournaments on titles such as 1998's Breakers' Revenge — and Super Street Fighter II Turbo tourneys never went out of fashion — so I'm all-in for Blazing Strike, I hope it finds its audience come clob?berin' time.

Warming up the Switch this autumn

Aksys Games is one of the more unpredictable publishers to take part in the New Game+ Expo. You never know quite what you're going to get from it. Over the past few years, it's published everything from Little Dragon's Café to Deadly Premonition Origins to the not-at-all confusingly named Under Night In-Brith EXE:Late[cl-r]. For the New Game+ Expo, however, it played up its collection ?of upcoming visual novels.

For the New Game+ Expo, Aksys went with some pretty obscure upcoming games, including Piofiore: Fated MemoriesTin & Kuna and Pretty Princess Party, as well as a really brief look at something called Escape from Asura. However, the reveal really speaking to me is Café Enchanté. Developed by Idea Factory, it casts pl?ayers in the role of Kotone, who inherits her grandfather's café and discovers it serves a clientele of demons, angels, and other mythical creatures.

If this sounds a bit like this year's Coffee Talk, know the art style here is very different. I'm talking eight-pack abs on shirtless demons. Aksys is promising an uplifting tale when Café Enchanté launches on Nintendo Switch this fall.

It's the stream that lets you keep all your equipment from the last one

With no E3 this ye??ar, the gaming community has had to make do with a hodgepodge of different s?treams, surprise reveals, and sudden announcements that have kept the writing staff of Destructoid on its toes. Some shows have been worth the wait, others not so much. We still have several more to go, but for my money, the New Game+ Expo stream has me the most excited. NIS America, Atlus, Spike Chunsoft, Inti Creates; these are some of my favorite publishers/developers, and to have them all in one show is worth taking a vacation day from my actual job to enjoy.

The organizers are promising new reveals, announcements, and updates for upcoming projects. With the ??variety of publishers participating, there's no telling what is in store.

So sit back, relax, and find out the games some of Japan's finest gaming companies are bringing our way. And if anything catches your eye, be sure to stay tuned after the showcase for a full day of streams featuring some of t?he games and pub?lishers featured in the show.

A whole day of games

The summer of gaming streams is going full steam as we head?? toward the back half of June. There are still many big presentatio?ns to come, including shows from Ubisoft, EA, CD Projekt Red, and more. Of course, the one I'm most looking forward to features none of those publishers and most of the Japanese developers I love.

New Game+ Expo is happening next week, and today, organizers revealed the streaming? schedule for the June 23 show. It kicks off at 8:00 am PST with a showcase featuring games from Sega, Inti Creates, Idea Factory, and more before switching over to streams from several publishers.

New Game+ Expo

Now, if you're wondering which games will be shown, the official list of reveals and trai??lers is still under wraps. Ho?wever, this show teaser put out earlier this week should give you an idea of which publishers are bringing new games, which are updating fans on existing titles, and which of them have surprises in store for viewers.

The entire New Game+ Expo showcase ??and post-showcase streams will be available to watch on the event's official Twitch Channel.

Grasshopper will be there too

With E3 calling in sick for 2020, developers and publishers around the world are scrambling to find ways to get the word out about their upcoming games. Some, like Ubisoft, are prepping their own individual events. Others, like Nintendo, seem to be content just drip-feeding announcem??ents to fans.

Those strategies are fine, but there's something to be said about having a great big show that brings together some of the finest developers and publishers from around the world. That's why I'm happy Sega, NIS America, Spike Chunsoft, and more have teamed up for New Game+ Expo, or NGPX. Sixteen publishers and developers from Japan and North America will join forces for a day of streaming on Twitch, revealing new games and giving new information on ??previously announced titles. While the game lineup is currently unknown, the list of companies participating is impressive.

New Game+ Expo

I don't know which of those logos excites me more. On the one hand, I won't say no to another dope-as-hell trailer for No More Heroes 3. On the other, the possibility of a new Shin Megami Tensei V trailer, however farfetched, is pretty damn enticing. Plus, I really want to see what Harvest Moon: One World is all about.

NGPX will go live on the front page of Twitch starting at 8:00 am PDT on June 23. The showcase broadcast will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm PDT and will include first looks at new titles?, trailers, live demos, Q&A, and more. The entire presentation will then be made available on the NGPX YouTube page.

VR version also on the cards

Blooming Japanese developer Mikage LLC has announced that it has signed with publisher Aksys Games to work on a mystery project for the upcoming PlayStation 5 platform, along with ports for PS4, P?C, Nintendo Switch and VR.

Mikage is the developer formed by Ryohei Mikage, the former President of Imageepoch, who were the developer behind anime franchises such as Luminous Arc, 7th Dragon, Arc Rise Fantasia and Criminal Girls. Aksys as a publisher are also renown for the love of anime, having published games in the Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart and BlazBlue series, as well as goofy shooter School Girl/Zombie Hunter.

There are no further details regarding this ??new venture, but a full reveal is expected at An??ime Expo 2020, which will take place in Los Angeles in July 2020. Brings a new meaning to parade float

AkSys Games has announced a release date for Ghost Parade, a spooky-cute metroidvania adventure from Indonesian studio Lent??ara. Fittingly, this tale of a haunted woodland will arrive on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch on October 31, Halloween.

Ghost Parade is the tale of a young girl, Suri, who finds herself lost in the woods while taking an ill-advised shortcut. While trying to find her way back home, Suri meets and befriends a menagerie of mystical characters, whose woodland home is threatened by deforestation plans. Teaming with her new groovy ghoulies, Sur??i must find?? her way out of the woods in order to put a stop her fellow humans' plans to destroy the ghost's habitat.

In development since 2015, Ghost Parade draws upon Indonesian folklore for its roster of spectres, imps and other mythical beings, with some 70 characters in all to be discovered and befriended. Lentara hopes that players will also take note of the game's pro-ecological message, while connecting with its charming art and character design. But the studio warns that despite its cute appearance, Ghost Parade is no walk in the park (or stroll through the woods), with gameplay designed to challenge even t??he mos??t ardent platform game fans.

To find out more about this intriguing new title, check out PlayStation Blog, where you can also hear two tracks from the game's OST. Ghost Parade launches Oct??ober 31 on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Generous gift from cute anime title

Aksys Games has announced that they are donating $10,000 from the profits of adventure game Little Dragons Café to children's charity Extra Life.

"In Little Dragons Café, the twins are working with a ragtag group of f??riends to save their mother from a mysteri?ous illness," said Aksus CEO and founder Akibo Shieh. "We wanted to partner with Extra Life because their campaign to mobilize the gaming industry to work together has raised millions of dollars in the past 10 years for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and helped to heal thousands of kids."

Little Dragons Café launched on PS4 and Nintendo Switch in August, and tells the story of twins who must cure their ailing mother while maintaining the upkeep of the family's Café, helping out a string of customers with their own personal problems. If you're anything like me, you've noticed your life has an alarming dearth of charming, heartfe?lt games where intimate stories play out over the backdrop of a tiny cafe that you're in charge of running. Also, if you're anything like me, you'd want to win a copy of said game, because you're the type to buy used underwear instead of new underwear, because it's cheaper, and you yourself are a very cheap person, indeed.

I think we're new best friends now. How's about we celebrate with some free keys of Little Dragons Café?

In Little Dragons Café, a series of unfortunate events leads to you tending to both a café, which you must both staff and o?perate, and a dragon, for whom you must care and nurture. By day you'll run things at the shop, serving customers and helping them with their problems, and by night you'll gather resources with your dragon friend as you str??engthen the bond between man and beast.

Renowned Parisian mime CJ Andriessen reviewed the game for Destructoid, saying, "Little Dragons Café is the type of game I walk away from feeling more hopeful in the world. Each chapter ends on such an?? earnest note that it raises my spirits." Doesn't that just sound delightful?

For your chance to win, comment below, including your platform of choice and a descri??ption of the signature dish that you and your dragon buddy would make at your café. Me and my dragon, Emma, made a really, ??really big bowl of cereal. We're a hit!

Our keys are for North American PS Store and eShop accounts only. Please make sure you comment from a Dtoid account that has your current email address on file. If I can't contact you, I can't visit your café. I'??m hungry, please don't turn me away.

Little Dragons Café is available now on PlayStation 4 and Switch.

Dragon poop for the soul

??Very recently, a co-worker of mine passed away. His death was sudden. Though he struggled with h??is health in the past, he recovered and was looking forward to his retirement at the end of the year. I’ve only been at my current job for around 18 months, so while I didn’t have a deep connection with him, he was a person I saw every day at work, who I talked with and helped whenever he needed my assistance. We got along well and I think that’s part of the reason I’ve struggled a bit with his passing. I’ve never known anyone who I interacted with on a near daily basis who died, so I didn’t quite know how to process it.

For several days I was absolutely down in the dumps, trying to placate these glum feelings with food. It wasn’t until I opened up to friends and co-workers that I started to heal. With their help, I was able to confront my feelings head-on, and I’ve since been able to pull myself out of the lull his passing put me in. The experience taught me to not face my problems alone, to look for and accept the help others generously offer. It’s the exact same lesson I learned playing through Little Dragons Café.

Little Dragons Cafe review

Little Dragons Café (Switch [reviewed], PS4)
Developer: TOYBOX Inc.
Publisher: Aksys Games
Released: August 24, 2018 (US), August 30, 2018 (Japan), September 21, 2018 (EU)
MSRP: $59.99

The core narrative of Little Dragons Café can best be summed? up by Juli?a Michaels’s hit single “Issues:”

‘Cause I got issues
But you got ‘em too
So give ‘em all to me
And I’ll give mine to you…

I play as one half of a set of twins dealing with an issue t?hat’s the catalyst for the story. Their mother has fallen into a coma after her human blood began to mix with her dragon blood. For as many questions as I instantly have about how cardiovascular systems work in this game, I’m far more intrigued by the potential cure for her ailment. After she falls ill, a strange man named Pappy arrives at the café with a dragon egg, instructing the siblings to raise the creature as it’s the key to their mother’s well-being.

They also have a ca??fé to run, but while the raising of the dragon falls largely on me as the player, saving the restaurant is a group effort. Very quickly in the story, the twins are joined by a trio of oddballs to help keep the business afloat. There’s Billy, the slacker who tries to dine & dash; Ipanema, the feisty woman who seems to think plates grow on trees; and Luccola, the flamboyant orc who wants nothing more than to be a renowned chef. All three come to the café with issues of their own, issues that not only play into how well the café operates but also how we go about helping the weary travelers who come to our place of business in need of assistance, whether they ?want to admit it or not.

It’s important to note the story is the main draw of Little Dragons Café. Creator Yasuhiro Wada basically said as much when I interviewed him last month, noting that he created the characters, story, and art style first before figuring out what kind of game it would be. At its core, it’s an adventure game with light simulation aspects. The addictive micro-management found in Mr. Wada’s previous titles is nowhere to be found here. Rather, the gameplay ?loop revolves around the cast: a new character arrives at my café with a problem, over the next few days we get to the root of their issue, the group has a revelation, and I try to solve the issue with food. Then we send them on their merry way as we await the next arrival. Story segments are pretty brief, so I spend most of my time exploring the land, gathering ingredients, helping out at the café, and cooking food for my ever-present dragon friend who I name Rick.

The plot is divided into different chapters, giving the game an episodic feel reminiscent of the Japanese dramas that inspired it. There’s even a bit a narrative text that bookends each new character arrival, written in a folksy manner my subconscious reads to me in the voice of Waylon Jennings, narrator of The Dukes of Hazzard.

Exploring the island is a restricted experience in the early chapters. I’m limited basically by where my dragon can ?go. When it’s just a tyke, there is only a small smattering of land I can traverse. As it grows, it gains the strength to push rocks and clear debris, opening up more places for me to survey. Scattered throughout the world are bushes I can pick all sorts of different vegetables out of, as well as fruit trees to shake, mystical plants that give me everything from curry to crème, caves to send Rick into, and fishing spots to catch some seafood. I also have a garden that can grow any type of food I’ve found in the wild and a fishing net that can catch any type of fish I’ve caught with my pole. Unfortunately, I don’t really get a say in what is found in my garden or the net.

Little Dragons Cafe review

There’s no combat to worry about as I travel, but there are beasts that can attack me. When Rick is small my only option is to run from them. If one hits me, it eats a dish in my inventory. As my dragon grows, he can fight back and turn these beasts into ingredients for my café. They’re really no trouble at all and even if I am hit, it’s not like the game has a health bar. I just need to make sure my dragon is well fed so he doesn’t become exhausted. By far the biggest adversaries I face in the Little Dragons Café are the in-game clock and my co-workers at the café ??who just can’?t help slacking off.

Most expeditions around the island are cut short by warnings the café staff isn’t doing their job. No matter where I am on the island, I can press the minus button to send me back there. If they’re slacking, I t?alk to them so they’ll get back to work. As the café grows in popularity, keeping the staff on task is crucial to achieving positive feedback from our customers. If push comes to shove, I can get my hands dirty as well. No matter how busy or slow the café gets, I can lend a hand taking orders, bringing out food, and clearing away dishes.

Cooking is left to Luccola, but the menu is up to me. I start out with a f??ew basic recipes and add more collected through the story or by gathering various recipe fragments scattered around the world. There are a limited number of menu spaces, so getting a good variety is key as is the quality of the dish. In order for a meal to be added to the menu, I must first create it with a simple and quite colorful rhythm mini-game. The music in making these dishes isn’t exactly tailor-made for a rhythm game, but gosh darn it if they ain’t all catchy as sin. The &ldqu??o;doo-wops” of the salad song are a particular favorite of mine.

Once a dish? is added to the menu, I just need to make sure the café keeps all the necessary supplies in stock. It’s easy to do for most recipes but becomes more involved as I spice up my dishes with higher-quality ingredients. Every type of food collected in the wild, in my garden, and in the fishing net has a number of different levels of quality. The most basic level for each food type is common across the island, but I can grow or find high-grade ingredients using the magical dragon poop Rick leaves in his bed every morning.

Little Dragons Cafe review

Morning is actually my preferred time of day in the Little Dragons Cafe. Though it doesn’t last long -- the in-game clock moves a bit faster than it should -- the magic hour of dawn offers breathtaking views of the island and the fantastic elements that make it up. From the character design to the scenery to the decision to mix 3D models with 2D images, Little Dragons Café is an absolute work of art. The real-time lighting and weather effects create spectacular shots around?? the island, even if they occasionally exaggerate the shadows.

For as beautiful as the environment surrounding the café is, the inside of the building itself is on a level of its own. The hand-drawn artwork is full of whimsy and every piece o??f it, from the detailed wall of the kitchen to the nook on the second floor, looks like it fell out of a work by Richard Scarry. The game is ??a classic, children’s picture book brought to life, its beauty only blemished by various technical difficulties.

In interviews leading up to its release, Mr. Wada has said there are been certain sacrifices made to get the game running on Switch. I did not receive a copy of the PlayStation 4 version, so I can’t compare them, but I will say without a doubt the two biggest issues Little Dragons Café has are its framerate and loading screens. The early hours are almost comical with how many loading screens there are. There is a loading screen to load another loading screen at the top of the game.? Every story segment is preceded by a loading screen and many of these seg?ments have multiple short ones to sit through.

Going outside of my café also requires a lengthy load screen and it’s where the framerate will tak??e a hit. The game never really keeps a consistent 30 frames per second and in spaces with a lot of elegant design, it can actually slow down how quickly I can turn the camera. I didn’t come into this game expecting any technical wonders, but you should know these issue?s are persistent.

There are smaller problems as well. Pop-in is quite prevalent, button cues during the cooking rhythm games can actually pause and then jump ahead causing me to miss, and the prompt to interact with people and objects in the world is quite touchy. There is one night at my café where, when trying to get my sister to stop sweeping and get back to work, I actually exit the restau??rant three times in error. It can be frustrating, but with how quaint, positive, and lively the rest of the experience is, it’s impossible to stay mad at it.

Little Dragons Café is the type of game I walk away from feeling more hopeful in the world. Each chapter ends on such an earnest note that it raises my spirits. Sure, it doesn’t have the deepest mechanics, and it’s not the most polished title I’ll play this year. But it has a soul and a kind heart that uplifts the basic gameplay to a place that makes Little Dragons Café? an easy recommendation to anyone looking for a s??oupcon of positivity in their life.

Game is totally cute with personality to boot

“Pe??rsonally, I love fighting games, and shooters, and viol?ent games in general.”

That wasn’t exactly what I thought I’d hear from Yasuhiro Wada when I asked him what types of games he enjoys playing. Friday afternoon, just outside of San Francisco’s Financial District, I sat down with him, along with Akibo Shieh, founder and CEO of Aksys Games, to discuss Little Dragons Café. The gam??e, releasing later this summer, is a lifestyle-shop sim where players control one half of a set of twins as they try to keep a café in business while raising a dragon that is the key to waking their mother from a deep slumber. That may sound outlandish, but it's par the course for one of gaming's most resilient creators.

I didn’t appreciate the brilliance of Mr. Wada until I was in my 20s. Growing up, my hands firmly planted in an SNES control from the moment I finished my homework to the moment it was time for bed, I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that farming in Harvest Moon could be fun. “Farming was for hicks,” I’d tell myself, not realizing until years later I grew up in a small town full of hicks that’s now full of meth but that has nothing to do with this story. To me, having fun was about saving princesses with Link, gunning down Aliens in Contra, and hitting home runs with HGH-addled baseball players in Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball. Farming? Pfft, farming is dumb.

It wasn’t until 2009 that I really gave the franchise a shot. Wada had long moved on from the series at this point, and the title that convinced me to give it a go had nothing to do with the main series. It was Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming, my favorite puzzle game on the Nintendo DS. The absolute joy that game filed me with convinced me to really give the mainline franchise a go with its next entry, Harvest Moon DS: Grand Bazaar.

Even though Wada wasn’t a part of the development team on this title, it followed the formula he established more than a decade ago; a formula that found a new generation of fans not too long ago with Stardew Valley. Frantic Farming and Grand Bazaar showed me how much fun a mor??e laid-back gaming experience can be, experiences Wada continued to produce with his Toybox Inc??. development company.

Sure, Hometown Story was a swing and a miss, but last year’s Birthdays the Beginning -- re-released on Switch this year as Happy Birthdays -- is one of the most unique titles I’ve ever played. Again, like with Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Bokujo Monogatari, Birthdays is an engrossing experience that engages people through meaningful activities that promote harmonious ideas??; the polar opposite of the types of games Wada himself plays.

“I play a lot of open-world RPGs. Like Fallout 3 and Skyrim. There are fighting and shooting elements in those games,” he explained. “But if all developers were to make only those types of games, I don’t think the gaming industry would last. There are a lot of people out there who are gamers without hav?ing played those violent games. Th??ey enjoy something else, so I feel I have to make something other than those genres to reach them.”

That philosophy has guided his career from Harvest Moon to Little Dragons Café and every title in-between. For Harvest Moon, a farming sim simply was?n’t a genre of game. Now, it’s ubiquitous within the industry. What’s changed for Mr. Wada is how he approached the development process of his new title.

“Until now, the way I have been making games is to make the game system first, and then add in characters and all the meat of the game afterward,” he said. “For Little Dragons Café, I worked on this backwar??d where we thought of the characters and the story and the art style first, and then decided how to turn all that into a game.”

The characters and art direction are a collaboration between Mr. Wada and the artist behind the original Harvest Moon. The two are working together for the first time in a decade, ??transforming their love of Japanese television dramas into a game people around the world can enjoy.

“Both the artist and I, we like these Japanese dramas, different Japanese dramas, where the theme was almost a run-down inn or restaurant that’s ready to go bankrupt and it was revived by customers. So that was the inspiration on that side of the game. The similarities of the dramas we were watching, basically everyone helping run these businesses were misfits or losers. Normally you’d think all these misfits getting together would not create a successful business. But even with all these misfits, one person with a weakness, when you have several people working together, they’d be able to overcome a lot of difficulties. That’s sort of what Little Dragons Café is all about.”

The café is just one of the aspects players will experience. There is also the little dragon they have to raise from hatchling to full-grown flier. Mr. Wad??a said its inclusion was chosen because of how the medium usually depicts dr?agons.

“I like dragons. Actually, I love dragons,” he said. “Usually dragons are depicted as enemies in video games where you have to basically kill them or attack them. So rather than doing that, I wanted to implement a dragon where it&?rsquo;s there alongside you to be ?your buddy as you explore the land.”

Nowhere is this love of dragons more evident than with a simple gameplay element I found in my hands-on session with the title. Little Dragon Café is an AA title through and through. It may lack the production values of its more expensive siblings, but it has a chasm of charm that just might sweep players off their feet. I onl??y had around 25 minutes to spend with the game and a great chunk of that was a cutscene introducing the feisty Ipanema, ?the second addition to the café crew.

The small sampling of actual gameplay I experienced fit right in with my expectations. Cooking up recipes for café customers is presented as a rhythm micro-ga??me. When I finish a recipe, the item is added to the menu and is rewarded with stars based on how well I do. I can always retry a recipe if I screw it up, and while earl?y rhythm games are simple, they will grow more complicated later in the game.

The controls of the mini-game are tight, which is something I can’t say about general character movement. It’s a bit slippery and while exploring the island gathering recipes strewn about like Hansel and Gretel passed through, but instead of leaving breadcrumbs they dropped pages of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking – there were a few instances where I’d position myself for a button prompt only to move an inch too far and lose it, forcing me to wiggle ?my character back to the right spot. There was also some pop-in on the PlayStation 4 and those dreaded invisible barriers that take some of the fun out of exploration. But the island is full of character, and that simple gameplay element I mentioned earlier absolutely seals it for me: Little Dragons Café has a dragon petting button. Much like the hug button from A Boy and his Blob, I sat there for three minutes just petting my little d?ragon. Hardcore adorable.

The game i??s still a few weeks away from release, but Wada is already thinking about the future. He confirmed during our interview his team is already at work on his next project. It’s difficult to say what kind of game his next title will be based on his recent output, but one thing we can guarantee is it won’t be free-to-play.

“As a game creator, I don’t think about which platform I ??want to develop for. I just want to make good content, whether it’s on mobile or consoles, it doesn’t really matter to me. The one thing I don’t want to make is a free-to-play game. Whether you’re downloading or actually buying physical, so long as you’re paying money and playing the game, there’s no difference if it’s on mobile or console. What I don’t like about free-to-play is it’s a free game that’s basically a monetizing machine where you have items to buy. That’s what I want to avoid. To me, that’s not creative. I don’t want to make something that’s not creative. I want to make start to end games as one whole product. Even as a consumer, spending five to ten dollars to play a game from start to end, doesn’t that make you feel comfortable?”

Yes, Mr. Wada, yes it does. Little Dragons Café launc????????????????????????????hes August 24, 2018, for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

A real class act

This is a game that knows exactly what it is. Even the title doesn’t leave a hell of a lot to the imagination. You’ve got school girls, and you’ve got zombies. These high school ladies don’t appear to be too worried about getting bitten though. In fact, they’re constantly throwing their clothes and used underwear into the hordes of undead enemies. They don’t give a fuck about common sense or the practicality of covering yourself up when surrounded by things that are trying to bite you. Welcome to School Girl/Zombie Hunter

The story focuses around five ladies as they battle their way through, the adorably named, zom-zoms. The best parts have almost nothing to do with any overarching plot, it’s the inane dialogue exchanges where it really shines. I touched upon it a bit during my review in progress a few days ago, but everything is presented in a deliriously fashioned B-movie sheen. The cast is split between generic, shy types and ultra-vain, over-the-top badasses. The one thing all of them have in common is their desire to escape the school where?? they’re stranded. Also, that they really don’t like wearing clothes.

School Girl/Zombie Hunter (PS4)
Developer: Tamsoft
Publisher: Aksys Games
Release: November 17, 2017
MSRP: $39.99

The combat is comprised of third-person, Earth Defense Force-styled gunplay, a one-button melee attack, and the ability to use various items like grenades and tripwires. It’s incredibly bare bones,? but it’s also very functional. The missions each offer different objectives, but they all amount to th?e same basic premise: Kill a bunch of zom-zoms.

If you ever find yourself overwhelmed by enemies, you can tear off your clothes and throw them as a distraction. This is never not fu??nny. You only get to do?? this once per mission though, and your character will be running around in their underwear until you reach the end. Watching all five of the lingerie-clad leading ladies prance around rotting corpses while shooting rocket launchers and automatic weapons is just as hilarious as it sounds.

Another thing that I spoke about during my previous report was how the game never really feels all that “sexy.” It almost seems like the developers are mocking their target demographic to a degree. However, as I found out once the game launched on PSN, that’s because they locked all of the truly skimpy outfits away as paid DLC. They’re only $0.99 a piece, but it’s something to consider. They range from different colored thongs to one that is literally just cherry tomatoes covering their nipples and a single, small l??eaf of lettuce between the legs. I can’t help but wonder how exactly those tiny pieces of produce are staying in place, but I suppose the game was never meant to be realistic.

I did have the chance to test out the online component, and it’s safe to say that it’s a total mess. Zom-zoms will go sliding sideways across the floor like a drunkard attempting to impersonate Tom Cruise in Risky Business, and?? the lag is genuinely, all around, pretty terrible. Still, I had a good time running through it with my roommate and three other strangers. There are only ten levels to choos?e from, but it was fun while it lasted. Unfortunately, split-screen local play isn’t an option. If you want to play with a friend, it’ll have to be over an internet connection on separate consoles.

The thrill of just how batshit insane everything was started to wear a bit thin by the time I got to the last chapter of the game, and the ending was way too serious. It’s mostly fine but extremely anti-climactic. I’d have loved to see them kick things up a notch and get really weird but, instead, it ?all fe??lt a bit uneven and rushed.

Despite it’s many, many flaws, School Girl/Zombie Hunter was a solid, camp-drenched romp, and it left me craving more. It may be a bit pricey for a budget title, but I found myself smiling constantly throughout the experience. It’s all so obscenely trashy and tongue-in-cheek that it’s hard not to wonder how the developers plan to follow this up. It never quite reaches the glory promised in the first half of the game, but this spin-off of the Onechanbara franchise definitely has potential.

Zom zom galaxy

I’ve never played any “sexy" Japanese games before, so School Girl/Zombie Hunter signifies the very first time that I’ve dipped my toes into the genre. Needless to say, these impressions, as well?? as the inevitable followup review, are coming from the perspective of a total novice.

I’m fairly close to finis?hing my first playthrough of the game on normal difficulty, but I’d like to take it through the paces a bit on a harder difficulty as well as try out the online co-op before I make a final verdict.

So far, I’m surprised at just how much I’ve enjoyed it. It’s dumb. It’s extremely dumb. We’re talking about a game where you play as a high school girl who throws their used panties at hordes of zombies (aka “zom zoms”) to distract them. Surprisingly, however, there’s a pretty severe lack of “sexy” on offer here. It also more closely resembles the gameplay of Earth Defense Force than its hack and slash origins in the Onechanbara series, where it spawns from.

This whole damn thing is hilarious. Without going too far into details, a few of these characters are terrible fucking people. The exaggerated shallowness ?of them has really highlighted just how off-the-rails this whole game is. It’s like an old, 70’s exploitation flick where all of the characters are portrayed as almost cart??oonish in their personalities. It’s all or none with these ladies.

Outside of the story, the game is definitely lacking a bit. The combat feels quite dated, and, honestly, the whole game does too. This could have easily released in the early stages of the Xbox 360’s lif??e cycle. This is a budget title designed for an extremely niche audience (you know who you are).

As I touched on earlier, School Girl Zombie Hunter doesn’t offer as much fan service as I initially expected. In fact, it almost feels like it’s mocking its target demographic at times. Instead, what you get is a goofy delivery that has more in common with the movies Samurai Cop and Miami Connection than your typical zombie fare. Everything is presented as tongue-in-chee?k to the max.

I’m at a point right now where I’m trying to decide if it’s “so bad it’s good” or leaning towards the former half of that phrase. There’s definitely some promise here, but it remains to be seen if it can deliver throughout. After I spend a bit more time with the content on offer, I&rsquo??;ll get back to you with a concrete verdict. Until t??hen, I’m going to get back to killing zom zoms.

Spoopid

When Paranormal Activity became an international blockbuster it ushered in a highly profitable era of B horror films. Since then cineplexes have been inundated with cheaply produced, easily marketable and quickly forgotten horror films. Blumhouse Productions is at the forefront of the industry, producing such hits as Insidious, Sinister and the far better than it had any right to be Oculus.

With budgets as low as $100,000, seemingly anybody can make a mint with a quick and easy horror film. If Creeping Terror were a movie I could easily see it joining the ranks of such films as It Follows, Goodnight Mommy or The Babadook. As a 3?DS game? Eh, it’s a toss-away title.

Creeping Terror (Nintendo 3DS [reviewed], PC)
Developer: Mebius
Publisher: Aksys Games
Released: October 31, 2017
MSRP: $8.99

Creeping Terror has all the makings of a great Blumhouse Productions movie. The setting is a dilapidated mansion where local teens have seen a mysterious figure rumma??ging about. Some high school students have apparently gone missing at the mansion, a fact the four main characters — the playable Arisa and her friends Bob, Ken and Emily — literally don’t give a shit about. They’re just there to make a sensationalist?? news piece for Bob’s web series. As soon as they go inside, Arisa is quickly separated from them and my adventure begins.

With slight influences from the SNES classic Clock Tower, my goal is to get Arisa and her friends out of the house before it’s too late. Hot on my tail is the Shovel Man, a hulking man that jumps?? into the scene when he’s least wanted and chases me around until I can find a good hiding spot. The Shovel Man is supposed to be scary. He is not. Once I discover how easy it is to subdue him — a single rock will stun him — he ceases to be frightful. Instead, as I wander around the mansion collecting keys, documents, and supplies??, he and the other two monsters I meet are more of an annoyance. Whenever they show up I just throw some shit at them and I’m on my way.

If they do catch me, a rapid tapping of the A button will push them off. It’s almost comically easy to get away taking no damage. There is a point halfway through the game where the Shovel Man is chasing me. I go through a do?or where there are no hiding spots so he should just come and grab me. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is programmed to go into that area because I sit there for five minutes and he doesn't bother showing up. The chase music is still playing so he is still after me, but for whatever reason, he will not go into that part of the mansion.

Creeping Terror tries hard to make these chase sequences heart?-pounding. There is a stamina meter that only activates when they chase me, but it’s not hard to keep ahead of them. There is also the flashlight on my cell phone that could be problematic. The battery drains over the course of my journey but instant refills are scattered everywhere.

The music and sound effects don’t really pull their weight in attempting to make this a cree??py experience. Mostly I’m just hearing Arisa’s footsteps loudly blaring through every hallway and bedroom. Early on the music is unsettling but it quickly becomes background noise that is easily ignored. The backstory of this mansion I discover through scattered documents is predictable and something I’m sure we have all seen over and over again.

What’s missing here, the one thing that could make this a worthwhile title, is adjustable difficulty. It’s too easy and there is no unlockable hard mode I can find. I clear my first run with a 91% collection rate in les?s than three hours. I’m not sure what I miss but I know exactly where I'll find it should I ever bother another playthrough. Whatever it is must not be too important because I end with what seems to be the best ending on my initial run. With four unlockable endings, there is some replay value though I would argue the primary gameplay isn’t something I value much at all.

Creeping Terror is a short, serviceable title that pays tribute to a bygone era ??of horror gaming. ??That sentence is probably the nicest thing I can say about it.

Onechanbara spin-off coming in November

Corpse-killing blast-a-thon School Girl / Zombie Hunter, which was released for the PS4 in Japan last January, will be resurrected in the United States on November 17, courtesy of ?Aksys ??????????????????????????Games.

The "Zombie Panic shooting Action" title sees five teenage girls, all with t?he exact same face and soulless eyes, fighting off waves of the undead who have t?aken over their private school. The girls can utilise individual special skills and an an ever-increasing arsenal of weaponry, from baseball bats to bazookas, to wage war on the infected attackers.

When the shit really hits the fan, the girls can distract the zombies by taking their clothes off, because of course they can. The game features a story campaign alongside multiplayer action and a host of side modes to test your speed, endurance and sharpshooting skills.

School Girl / Zombie Hunter launches on PS4 in North America on November 17.
