The first act of Arcane's second and final season is coming to Netflix on November 9, 2024. Riot Games, in celebration of Arcane's end and the beginning of their League of Legends expanded universe, dropped a cracked trailer rec?ounting the events that led us to this epic finale.

Arcane Season 2's latest trailer is a well-edited, neon-dipped love letter to the series' colossal fandom. It reminds us why the first season is so beloved while building hype for the ?last emotional chapter of Violet and Jinx's story.

Arcane Season 2's new trailer recounts the tragic tale of Violet and Powder

The latest teaser for Arcane's second season knifes at the heartstrings right out the gate, bringing us back to where the series began. Through some top-shelf editing, the trailer ebbs and flows between past and? future, reminding us ??of who each key player in Arcane was before they, or the world, made the decisions that transformed them into the people they are. As has always been the case, though, everything in the trailer rolls back to Violet and Powder.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpQOtc-YgUY

Arcane has always been about Violet and the girl once known as Powder. The fiery tragedy that first tore these once-loving sisters apart remains one of the most traumatic scenes I've ever watched, and the events that unfolded after the first season's six-year time skip systematically carved up any hope I and millions of other Netflix viewers had that they could ever mend their relationship. Cities clashed, magic spiraled out of control, and a fandom ship set sail before Arcane Season ??1 closed, but the story? always found its way back to Violet, Jinx, and the shattered bond that once tied them together.

Based on what we've seen from its trailers, Arcane Season 2 will pick up where the first season left off. In case it's gotten hazy over the last two years, Arcane Season 1 ended with Jinx launching a Hextech-powered rocket into the Council of Piltover's chambers, presumably killing everyone inside and plunging the city into war with its subterranean neighbor, Zaun. This explosive finale left plenty of ?lingering plot threads d?rifting in the wind, and it looks like this season aims to tie them up.

From Heimerdinger's new alliance with Ekko and the Firelights to the all-but-confirmed revelation that Violet and Powder's foster father, Vander, has become LoL's Warwick, Arcane Season 2 isn't short on exciting directions its story could go in. I'm just as interested to see what the writers will do with Violet's re??lationship with Caitlyn, personally.

Arcane Season 2's creative t??eam is spli?tting the season into three acts for reasons that will hopefully make sense once they arrive on Netflix. Each act will come out on a different date, one week apart. Act 2 will drop on November 16, 2024, while Act 3 will go live on November 23, 2024.

Netflix just dropped the latest trailer for Arcane Season 2, and I'm not sure I'm ready for it. The first season of this fantasy-steampunk was my favorite watch of 2022, and it looks like the seco??nd will be just as beautiful, thrilling, and heartbreak?ing as its predecessor.

Arcane Season 2 puts Vi and Jinx on a colorful collision course

Clocking in at two minutes and twenty sec??onds, the trailer doesn't leave much room for you to breathe.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsffPST-x1k

Arcane Season 2 picks up where the first season's explosive cliffhanger left off, with the cities of Piltover and Zaun plunging into an all-out civil war. With their resp??ective stakes firmly in the ground and their sisterly bond shattered, Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee?? Steinfeld) are all but destined to lead their respective factions into battle. Oh, and the magic that powers both cities' technology is apparently "waking," so the world may be on the verge of an arcane apocalypse.

Arcane Season 2 is already a work of art.

Arcane's first season gave me many reasons to love it, but I fell hard for its incredible animation. The team at Fortiche Productions, helmed by directors Pascal Charrue and Arnaud Delord, produced one of the most beautifully animated television series ever drawn. Colorful and textured, Arcane's art style is objectively gorgeous, but it also contributes to the story, helping to tell the tragic tale of the estranged sisterhood at Arcane's center.

Based on the trailer clips, Arcane Season 2's animators are dialing everything up to eleven. Colors pop with even greater intensity than in the first season, with Jinx's iconic powder bombs painting Piltover in rainbow hues during one scene. The all-black Hot Topic-adjacent outfit I saw Vi sporting at one point tells me that darkness will cut deeper this season??. In a series revolving around class unrest, a con??trast in the color scheme speaks loudly without uttering a word.

Vi staring into the mirror in her new, dark outfit, bloodied and angry.

Arcane Season 2's animation will also continue the first season's habit of hiding blink-and-you'll-miss-it bits of foreshadowing between frames. Fans on Reddit already have caught one particularly grim hint towards the potential fate of Heimerdinger, a character we g??ot to see in action during a sneak preview we got back in July.?? I'm still combing through the trailer for plot details, and I expect fans will find more in the coming weeks.

We've known from the moment its first trailer dropped that Season 2 will be Arcane's last, and as much as it breaks my heart to see the series go, I'm glad it's going out with such a bang. When the war between Piltover and Zuan starts on Novembe?r 2nd, I know exactly where I'll be.

The League Of Legends YouTube channel has recently released the first teaser trailer for the hit Arcane Netflix TV series. While some of season 2's new addition??s are pretty clear, some are of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it sort. Let's look at every cool element we were able to spot ahead of the season's release.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-6g2uEjF1s

What's new in Arcane season 2

Set in the world of Riot's MOBA League of Legends, Arcane Season 1 told the story of two sisters, Vi and Powder, who see their relation??ship get to?rn apart by the conflict between Piltover and Zaun.

As you likely know by now, season one finished in a literally explosive cliffhanger after Jinx finally uses her ult super mega death rocket on the Piltover council, a building filled with very important characters. That event will likely serve as the catalyst for everything taking place in Arcane season 2. While we don't know the exact result of the attack, there are lines in the new trailer claiming that the council is dead, and that Piltover will respond with wrath. So, we at least know that the big ending we got wasn't a mere fake-out intended to raise hype for? season 2.

Piltover Wrath

The first important change, which probably comes as a response to the attack, is that Vi will put her outlaw days behind her to join Caitlyn's Piltover police department. This piece of news disappointed the fans who only know of LoL via the show, but that's not a surprise to fans of the game, where Vi has always be?en an enforcer.

//twitter.com/HexWreck/status/1798917877380378626

Two other interesting additions com??e from Zaun, the faction at war with Piltover. They are Warwick and Singed, who?'d been teased in season 2's first look:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9GeSbz9478

We get a rather clear glimpse of Singed, but, again, we don't see much of Warwick in this teaser. Still, I'm betting thi?s can only be one character:

Warwick in Arcane
Screenshot via Destructoid

Most ??important of all, however, is the reveal that Season 2 ??will actually be the final season. The show is likely to culminate with the final showdown between Vi, now with her famous gauntlets, and the former Powder, who Vi finally acknowledges as Jinx.

Vi vs Jinx
Screenshot via Destructoid

O?n top of Vi's Hextech gauntlets, we also get to see Caitly??n making use of her Hextech rifle to charge up and fire her ultimate.

Cait charging up her ult.
Screenshtot via Destructoid

If you're familiar with the game, you'll know that one particularity of Cait's ultimate is that even though it locks on to an enemy target, its projectile can be blo?cked by another member of the enemy team who gets in the way. Will we see Vi bravely blocking the projectile meant to kill her sister? We'll see.

Though cool Hextech gadgets seem to be a big focus of season 2, Viktor and Jayce, two of the bigge??st masters of Hextech in the game remain to be seen. No way such important characters would'??ve just perished in the previous series finale, right? That'd be really strange especially when considering that game Viktor's whole thing is coming back as a cyborg.

And on top of all the cool things that fans of the game? can already identify, there are also a bunch of shots that are just as mysterious as they're beautiful:

And if you feel sad for learning that season 2 will mark the end of Arcane, I'm happy to tell you that you need not fret too much. Series co-creator Christian Linke has already assured fans that Arcane is and has always been the mere starting point for many stories to be told by Riot Games and Fortiche's partnership in the future. If the final season of Arcane manages to live up to the very high standard put up by the first season, there's no doubt that the future of Riot Games' future in animat??ion looks very bright.

Season 2 of Arcane will hit Netflix on November 24.

Netflix's hit League of Legends show, Arcane, is expected to release its second season this November. To bide the time until then, Riot Games and Netflix released a small yet intriguing Arcane Season 2 teaser as part of League of Legends' 2024 roadmap that may tease a fan-favorite arrival.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=NF4sdChD0eQ

In this 45-second teaser, we're treated to a haunting look at what appears to be a blood transfusion. Giving his blood seems to be Silco's doctor acquaintance, Singed. While it isn't said who or what is being given blood outside of the gigantic beast, some fans are quick to specu??late. In fact, one of the main theories from last season may help decipher who that hanging abomination may be.

My Enemy

I'll start by saying my knowledge of League of Legends starts and ends with Arcane. So, with this new Arcane teaser, I had to do some digging to find some answers. Looking through the YouTube comments of the video (as dangerous as it may be), I came across a few people bringing up a name: Warwick. One Goog?le search later and, lo and behold, there it is! The many green vials upon the engineered beast's back and the creature-like physique are spot-on.

As for what created Warwick, one can turn to the last episode of season one, "The Monster You Created". During the episode, we see Singed take the body of a Shimmer-infected Vander to his lab. Vander, for those who need a refresher, was the guardian of Vi and Jinx as well as the respected protec??tor of the underground.

Screenshot via Netflix YouTube

When we last saw him in Arcane, he took Shimmer and changed into a monster. He proceeds to save Vi and t??hey jump out of a collapsing building. It would make sense that Singed would use Vander's body, dead or alive, for experiments and create the perfect monster. If Vander is indeed Warwick, it seems our heroes' battle will hit a lot more close to home.

Arcane, released in 2021, follows Vi and Jinx, two separated sisters, as they try to reunite with each other in an ever-evolving world of chaos and invention. The show was lauded upon release for its spectacular animation, loaded voice cast, and incredible story. It even won Outstanding Animated Program at the Primetim??e Emmys and Best Adaptation at The Game Awards. As one of my favorite shows of 2021, it's safe to say a lot of people are looking forward to Arcane's second season's release in November.

As part of today’s Netflix Geeked event, the streamer confirmed that Arcane Season 2 will be out in November 2024. In?? the 15-second long teaser, we can see Jinx solemnly walking towards what appears to be the Bridge of Progress in Piltover, but it’s surrounded in an ominous shade of crimson.

//twitter.com/netflix/status/1722721473612140629

In the teaser, we can hear Jinx hum??ming the melody line from “The Bridge,â€?which is featured in the score for the first season. Behind that, her footsteps echo and what could be the environment catching aflame and chaos ensuing can be heard. It’s bound to be an exciting continuation, based on this alone.

It’s not exactly news that Arcane is getting a second season. Shortly after the first season concluded on November 20, 2021, the powers that be at Riot Games made the announcement that a second season was “in production.It’s not even news that the series would be returning at the end of 2024, thanks to an investor presentation given by Tencent in September 2023, which revealed it’d be coming during Q4.

But, we now know for certain that Arcane will be returning in November 2024. I am not at all sure why we’re being told now, with a year left to wait for more of the League of Legends story, but some of t?he recent strikes in Hollywood that may have put a pause on production.

I suppose we’ve already waited two y??ears, what’s one?? more? In the meantime, I’ll just be over here, with “Enemyby Imagine Dragons and JID playing on perpetual repeat.

Hollywood has oftentimes tried to capt??ure the magic of video games on film, and the most fun audiences have ever gotten out of it was seeing it fail stupendously pretty much every time. Still, you cannot say the same about game-to-tv-show adaptations, as those have already provided us with actual top-tier entertainment. Let's take a look at the best of the bunch.

[caption id="attachment_385596" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Witcher Netflix Image By Netflix[/caption]

06. The Witcher

Okay, It's very important to establish that Netflix's The Witcher is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's books, and not of the games Just kidding. It's pretty obvious that Henry Cavill is emulating video game Geralt because this series only exists due to the success of the games. Yes, I know damn well that the only people watching this are the millions of Witcher 3 fans out there.

It's also important to mention that the entire show (so far) is very uneven, hence landing at number six in this ranking. Still, the show does many things right the fight choreography is awesome, and so is the costume and set design. Production-wise, this feels closer to the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy than to The Hobbit ??trilogy. Sadly that's not a given these days when they usually just use CGI for everything. It's great to see a video game adaptati?on putting so much work in.

Also, it's clear that th?e heart is there. Cavill is awesome, the same goes for Ciri, Yennefer, and Jaskier, obviously. The only real problem here is the story's awkward progression, but you can always come back to the first season to enjoy some fun and uncompromising episodic monster-of-the-week action.

Oh, and that song about throwing money at Witchers is an instant classic.

05. The Last Of Us

Please don't get angry for seeing The Last Of Us merely at number five in a ranking about the best things of a spe?cific kind ever made.

It’s definitely ?good??, competent, and very ugly or beautiful whenever it wants to be. Just like the game, it picked the perfect couple of actors to give life to the characters that could carry the massive weight of both the game's drama and the hopes that more video games could get prestige TV treatment in the future.

But is it really that big of an achievement? It feels like a very safe adaptation of a game that already played like a movie in the first place. HBO's The Last Of Us is good, but you know what else is good? Watching a video compilation of the cutscenes from the first game on YouTube. I wish we co?uld see a future season starring a new group of main characters on a completely different adventure. Perhaps you can get Henry Cavill to star in it. I heard he likes games.

"The

04. Sonic Boom

Sonic Boom, the game, is one of the worst games ever made. Its TV show, also called Sonic Boom, would deserve prai?se even?? if it were just a smidge above an unwatchable mess filled with inexplicable animation errors, but nope, it's a genuinely good kid's show.

Many Sonic fans are aware that good Sonic games are a rarity these days, but good Sonic TV shows have always been rare. Remember that show where Sonic had a rock band? The kids of today don't have to suffer through that just to get their Sonic fix an??ymore.

The Sonic Boom animated series gives the world ?of Sonic and its characters a makeover, and ties it all up with some pretty funny dialogue if you're in the?? age range of people they made this for, at least.

[caption id="attachment_234605" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Dracula in Castlevania Image by Netflix[/caption]

03. Castlevania

Netflix's Castlevania is probably the first truly-great video game-based TV show, and legitimately one of the best animes of? recent times.

It d??oes a great job of fleshing out the entire Belmont clan, as well as making Dracula go from just that meme who asks "What is a man?!" into a real flesh and cold-blood character with real motivation. Also, the action is unsurprisingly great.

It succeeds in all the parts where The Witcher TV show fumbled, as whereas most of the people who care about the Witcher TV show were already fans of the games, Castlevania actually brought in a lot of new fans who likely weren't e??ven born by the time the first game in the series came out.

The only possible problem stemming out of this show is how the demise of the game series might lead future generations to think of Castlevania as something that began as an anime, and ??not as one of the best 2D games?? of all time.

[caption id="attachment_344945" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Cyberpunk Edgerunners Netflix Image by Netflix[/caption]

02. Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Even though the Cyberpunk 2077 game we have today is miles better than what we got upon release, I think it's safe to say that Edgerunners, its neat Netflix anime tie-in, still bea?ts it by a wide margin.

Instead of trying to retell the events of the game via some beautiful but ultra-expensive CGI, Edgerunners gives us what I wanted out of The Last Of Us TV show.

It uses the world of the game to tell a completely new story featuring a bunch of instantly lovable new characters, a decision that ultimately enriches both the anime and the game by helping populate such a huge but otherwise empty city. No, I'm not taking a dig at how the PS4 version of Cyberpunk featured a comically low number of NPCs on the streets of Night City I'm talking about how seeing more characters living out their stories brings life and soul to the world of Cyberpun?k —/em>and this world will never have too m?uch of that.

[caption id="attachment_398034" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Arcane's cast of characters Image by Netflix[/caption]

01. Arcane

There was no way this would ever end anywhere other than in the top spot. The animation alone is so unique and marvelous it makes me believe that even if its story made as little sense as the game's lore, and even if the characters were as toxic as the overall League Of Legends community, I'd still feel tempted to rank it near the top. Luckily, I don't have to deal with that as Arcane avoids?? all of the known video game adaptati??on pitfalls and then some.

Instead of fitting the popular game in its plot in an inevitably contrived way, Arcane had the guts to create a completely new story that ignores the Summoner's Rift competition altogether, opting instead to give long-deserved depth and pathos to many of the game's popular characters. The result is an astounding success on all levels. I hope more adaptations could learn from it and risk going for something new instead of trying to repeat its video game beats those which famously work for video games, but n?ot necessarily in the audiovisual format.

Not bad for a show ?whose intro features a song by Imag??ine Dragons, huh?

It's a real-life Fishbones!

Jinx was already one of the most well-loved and recognizable characters on the League of Legends roster, but after the release of Netflix's Arcane, her popularity has launched into the stratosphere. That kind of mainstream recognition usually means there are some awesome collabs on the way, which is definitely true in this case. This time around, Riot teamed up with Nerf to create a life-sized replica of Jinx's classic blaster known as Fishbones, which was also featured in Arcane, as fans will remember.

Jinx's Fishbones is available for pre-order now (pre-orders close January 1, 2023, and will be shipping on December 31, 2022. The gun is a gargantuan 35 inches long, and features jaws that open and close as you shoot. It holds 18 total darts, shooting out a three round burst every time you pull the trigger. Fishbones also comes with a Jinx-inspired stand and "display-worthy packaging" for those who want to show it off for everyone to see. The NERF LMTD League of Legends Jinx Fishbones blaster retails for $169.99, and is available for pre-order on Amazon or directly from Nerf.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC_BXWllD5k

The Jinx Fishbones collaboration is part of NERF LMTD, a " premium, special edition, fan-focused line from the Nerf brand brings you some of the most iconic items from movies, video games, and entertainment with premium features and packaging." Other franchises that have been honored with a Nerf collab include Star Wars, Halo, Star Trek, Aliens, and G.I. Joe, just to name a few.

This has seriously got to be one of the coolest gaming merchandise crossovers I think I've ever seen, and absolutely something I wish I had when I was a kid. I've only touched League of Legends once in my life (that's a whole st??ory for another day), but the second Nerf releases something from a game I play, I might just have to splurge and treat my inner child.

The animated series gets a nod right out of the gate

[Update: Arcane walked away with four trophies on the first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. It took home the award for Outstanding Animated Program, beating Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, and Marvel's What If...? It was also awarded three jury prizes in Outstanding Individual? Achievement in Animation.]

Riot Games and Fortiche Productions' Arcane has been nominated for?? two categories in the 2022 Emmy awards. The animated series has nominations fo?r both sound editing and outstanding animated program of the year.

The nominations, announced this morning, put two more award nominations on Arcane's resume. Arcane is in the Outstanding Animated Program - 2022 category and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Com?edy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And An??imation - 2022.

Both cite the episode "When These Walls Come Tumbling Down," the sixth episode of Arcane season one.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Svs_hl897c

Arcane does have some competition in the animation category, though. Marvel's What If...? short series was also nominated, as was Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty, and The Simpsons.

The sound editing category, meanwhile, also includes Barry, Cobra Kai, Love Death + Robots, Ted Lasso, and What We Do In The Shadows.

Don't Jinx it

The League of Legends animated series did make a pretty big splash on Netflix, though. Impressions of the show were positive, my own included, and a second season is already in production. Heck, Riot Games even purchased some significant equity in the animation studio, Fortiche.

Safe to say that whether Arcane goes home with a trophy or not, it's still a big success for League in the streaming world. It's not even the only streaming series covering League of Legends right now; Paramount+ has been hosting Players, a fictional series about a pro League team competing in the LCS from the creators behind American Vandal. Making good art ain't easy

We've seen a lot of video game adaptations over the past few years, but none of them have been quite as successful as Riot's League of Legends TV show Arcane. The Netflix series was praised by critics and fans alike, has already won multiple awards ahead of the 2022 Emmys, and Season 2 of the show has been confirmed for quite a while. Plenty of people are curious as to how Riot managed to pull off creating one of the best game-to-TV adaptations of all time, myself included, and now the studio is giving us a glimpse into their process of creating Arcane with a brand new docuseries.

This morning Riot released a trailer for the five-part docuseries called Arcane: Bridging the Rift, which will c?over the series' development from the writers' room all the way up to its release. We'll get interviews from all stages of development writers, artists, animators, and more.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiKYlBMlHcw

The trailer also lays out just how high the stakes were for the team behind Arcane, who up to that point had only produced some League of Legends-inspired music videos.

Creat??ing a show of this scale and scope was a huge leap, especially because it centered around a game that's not exactly known for its story, and it looks like we're ??going to see just how difficult it was to get the series made internally.

Not gonna lie, I'm really looking forward to watching an Arcane docuseries. I love seeing behind-the-scenes footage, and I especially love to hear passionate, creative people talking about the process behind their art. Sounds like we'??ll be getting a lot of that, both from the team at Riot and the Paris-based animation studio Fortiche Productions.

As someone who only plays Riot games on rare occasions, nothing gets me hype? for a studio like som??e good behind-the-scenes footage.

We don't have an exact release date yet for Arcane: Bridging the Rift, but we do know that it's coming out ?sometime in August.

It's coming for us all

It's no secret that superhero movies have dominated the box office for over a decade now. It's also not a secret that a lot of people out there, myself included, have suffered from superhero movie burnout. Things have been winding down in the MCU after Endgame, and DC never really got much of a start to begin with. Now, it seems like Hollywood is running out of comic book material to mine, so they're moving on to another action-oriente?d ma?rket they haven't fully tapped into yet: the video game movie.

It seems like a new video game movie or show is being announced just about every day, and this trend is showing no signs of slowing down. Games are the natural next step after comic books they're usually packed full of exciting fi?ght sequences, and often center around the same fantasy or sci-fi tropes that audiences love. Plus there's the added bonus of the automatic audience of people who already love the IPs that they're adapting. It's the obvious ??safe choice, something filmmakers gravitate towards every time.

[caption id="attachment_308971" align="alignnone" width="1200"] [Image Source: Polygon][/caption]

Working against the past

But there's just one problem video game movies in the past have been notoriously bad, because for whatever reason filmmakers can't quite seem to hit their stride in translating interactive content to a more linear format. Of course, there have been a few exceptions over the years. The Sonic series has been doing well on the silver screen, but for every success, there are dozens of other failed game-to-film projects. The World of Warcrafts, Assassin's Creeds, and most recently, Uncharteds of the world have already telegraphed to the public that? video game movies are almost always a letdown.

On the other hand, we have shows like The Witcher and Arcane th?at have done exceptionally well, which provide a little bit more hope. I'm a staunch believer that games should have always been adapted in a serialized format anyway, especially if the creators are going for a 1:1 translation of the story that was originally from the game.

Games already tell their stories in a much longer form than films, so if yo??u want to cut it down to a two-hour runtime rather than a fifteen- to thirty-hour one, creators will need to make a lot of changes.

Arcane

I'm all for changes, though, when they can add to the experience. Arcane was set in the world of League of Legends, but expanded upon that world in a way that players and viewers hadn't seen before. Trying to make an exact TV version of League of Legends would have been kind of ridiculous given that it's not a story-driven game, but the end result of Arcane is a good case study in how taking an idea and transforming it into something new (aka the whole point of adapting s??omething to a new medium) is what will make the project shine the mo?st.

Putting a new spin on the classics

This is especially true of games where the performances are their most iconic feature. It's what makes me most hesitant about HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson are Joel and Ellie. They put so much of themselves into those characters, which means the new cast has some big shoes to fill. Those story moments are punctuated with such specific emotional beats from the actors, which were so perfectly captured by the animation just try and tell me that the last shot of Ellie's face when she says "okay" isn't one of the?? most iconic and? recognizable in all of gaming.

For me, the only way that the Last of Us show can see success is if those in charge of crea?ting it lean into Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey's respective takes on Joel, Ellie, and?? the relationship between them rather than trying to perfectly recreate moments from the game.

Ellie from The Last of Us

Netflix's newly confirmed BioShock movie will have a similar problem; it also contains some of the most iconic performances in games history. It also has the additional problem of using more gaming conventions to convey its narrative than The Last of Us does, specifically through the radio. Having the player receive so much of ??the game's story content through a radio that plays as they explore was a smart way to keep the player engaged in the narrative, and although it's not impossible, I think it will be pretty difficult to keep the viewer engaged in the same way while also not giving up the twist right away.

I think the thing I find most frustrating about all of these adaptations is that they mostly just don't need to happen, not really. In theory, it's really cool to think of seeing some of my favorite stories in a new light the abstract, nebulous idea of seeing a stylized, well-produced new take on BioShock or Portal is something I'm ravenous for.

If you're gonna do it, do it right

I can't know for s??ure why Hollywood keeps ?getting this stuff wrong, but my guess is that they don't understand how the interactivity of games makes them unique. It's an entirely different set of rules of how you tell a story, and that can be much more difficult to understand when one doesn't have a grasp on the medium in the first place. Any old film executive understands how a book works, but I can bet that plenty of them have never even played a video game before.

My only hope is that these studios continue to incorporate lots of people from the games industry who can help bridge that gap, and that they tr??y to capture the spirit of what made the original fun rather than just copy and pasting story beats.

For now I will remain skeptical, so that when a good video game movie does come out, I can be pleasantly surprised, ra?ther than let down yet again.

It doesn't end with Arcane

Like everyone else in the world, I finished watching Arcane, Netflix and Riot Gamesshow tied to the League of Legends universe. Admittedly, I don’t really enjoy playing League, but, like with most games, I still really enjoy the lore. So despite not having an especially personal connection to the source material, I found the star relationship of Arcane, the now undeniably?? canon one between Vi and her sist??er Jinx, to be compelling.

I have a sister (our relationship involves 100% less bombings than Vi’s), and seeing Arcane take an emotional look at this sometimes infuriating, mostly fulfilling familial bond that girls have was a nice surprise from games media. It made me think, though, that most game siblings are brothers or brother and sister. And often, when sisters are depicted, they’re presented as ultra-sexy rivals , something that League the game does, too, which is undoubtedly more about gameplay (and appealing ??to male eyes!) than sist??ers themselves.

So, I came up with four of my favorite sisters in video games that provide alternatives to those conventions with lore or less conventional gameplay. Let me know your favorite video game siblings in the comments!

Quelaag and Quelaag’s Sister, Dark Souls

Quelaag and Quelaag’s Sister are probably my favorite video game sisters their story makes me so sad! Blind and sick, Quelaag’s Sister is only able to talk to fellow Daughter of Chaos Quelaag, who provides her comfort and care despite their disagreements over how to rule. Their sisterhood is more core to them than any disagreement.

[caption id="attachment_300577" align="alignnone" width="1366"]Quelaag and Quelaag’s Sister are probably my favorite video game sisters [Source: Dark Souls Wiki][/caption]

Giana and Maria, The Great Giana Sisters

Although this 1987 game was an obvious Super Mario Bros. knockoff (and the loading screen is so insanely, unnecessarily sexual “lol , I think the story is sweet. Little sleeping Giana ends up in a dangerous dreamworld and fights her way through it to return to Maria. It’s nice to have girls looking out for girls in games, and Nintendo eventually got over the whole copyright infringement thing.

The Great Giana Sisters

Furies, Hades

The Furies are technically more a Greek mythology landmark than beacons in video game history, but they make for a fun boss fight. I like the idea of these three sisters sticking together to try to pummel your ass, and although not necessarily central to the game’s lore, the Furiesinclusion as a boss is a nice alternative to games that put sisters on the sidelines.

Megaera, Alecto, and Tisiphone from Hades

Witch Sisters, Witch SistersSugary Dreams

Okay, I mainly picked this arcade-style game because it’s incredibly cute, but sisterhood can be cute, too! This game?? is about tiny witch sisters, Keet and Kat, who team up for a noble quest: regaining their stolen candy. I highly recommend playing with a younger sister, especially if she’s not typically into video games, but usually into candy.

It made for a fun watch, though

I've only ever played League of Legends once in my life. Story?? time: I was working a small event where they were holding a tournament, but they didn't have enough people to play, so I got roped in even though I had never touched the game in my life (I had at this point played a bit of Heroes of the Storm after my friends insisted a few months prior, and decided that MOBAs weren't really my thing). I climbed up onto the stage and literally set up my League account right there, and then we were underway.

I truly had no idea what I was doing, and kind of started just clicking randomly. Somehow we won because the other team neglected to kill any of our minions, so their base got overrun. Afterwards, my friend who was hosting the event informed me that the game was actually streamed to the front page of Twitch, where the commentators decid?ed to roast my obvious lack of knowledge for everyone to see.

[caption id="attachment_298479" align="alignnone" width="900"] [Image Source: Gamespedition][/caption]It was somewhat of a traumatic introduction to the beloved MOBA, but honestly, I probably wouldn't want to play League regardless. At this point it's pretty obvious that story-focused games are my absolute favorite, and while the world of League of Legends is full of some pretty cool lore, it's just not enough to pull my attention.

In comes Arcane, and here I was thinking that it was going to completely change my mind about wanting to play the game. Part of me dreaded it because I knew I didn't have the free time to spare to learn and then play a bunch of League. Turns out I had nothing to worry about.

Don't get me wrong, I had a blast watching Arcane. The visuals, the music, and the worldbuilding were all fantastic, and I hope that future shows and films can take note of all the unique things the show is doing to push visual storytelling forward. Its polish and production quality are unmatched, and it deserves all the praise it's getting in that regard. I think using the characters from your games that players already know and love and letting us go along on a journey with them is a really smart idea, and I look forward to seeing how Riot continues to prove that game properties can flourish as other types of media.

The crux of the Arcane, though, was supposed to be its characters. Most of the marketing I've seen has been focused on the relationship between sisters Jinx and Violet, which in theory is the emotional centerpiece of Arcane. After watching, I was disappo??inted in the lack of more full character development from pretty much the entire cast of characters the motivations were often muddled, and I found myself wondering why someone was acting a certain way rather than understanding it as the next natural step in their arc.

Plot-wise, there were so ??many different topics introduced, like the contrast between those who are privileged and the people they exploit, the dehumanization of drug addicts who are victims of a system stacked against them, the ethical dangers of letting scientific advances get out of hand, or hell, even what it means to be a family, an idea that had more screen time than any others. The show does a good job of setting everything up (I had a lot of hope after the first three episodes), but it lost me with its failure to say anything conclusive about its themes.

I can't pretend to know exactly why Arcane was made in the first place. I want to believe that it was because Riot was so p??assionate about the story they wanted to tell, but the jaded part of me that lives in the real world knows that it's at least in part because they wanted to promote their games.

The biggest reason that's holding me back from giving Riot's games a chance is their lack of focus on narrative-driven entries to their catalogue. It's not like there's a problem with that it's entirely their prerogative to make whatever the hell kind of games they want. I know for a fact that the stuff they make is awesome if you're a fan of the given genre. But for me, Arcane doesn't work as motivation to go and try League, because th?e experience of watching it is so vastly different to playing the game.

With Arcane's release and subsequent success, I can't help but think of the other intellectual property that has become a pop culture monolith with its game-to-TV adaptation that also happens to be on Netflix: The Witcher. The games we?re already insanely popular, but the show is really what push??ed it over the edge of becoming a household name to more mainstream audiences.

The Witcher is a bit of a different case to Arcane, because the IP actually started out as ??novels first, then went to games, then TV. The focus on storytelling was always there from the beginning, and each incarnation provided a new interpretation of its world and characters. I actually think the way the series has done adaptations is real??ly smart with each medium telegraphing its narrative in its own unique way, I like that they allowed the different versions to do what was best suited to how the story was being told.

Having started as a game, and a non-narrative game at that, Arcane had a different set of challenges. They had to build the story from the ground up, and while there's a limitless amount of potential there, it's also lacking the inherent structure that The Witcher had the luxury of working off of as a starting point. That structure is exactly what I think Arcane would have benefited from the most.

The fight scenes in the show were bombastic and dynamic, and definitely evocative of the source material, but all I could think was, "man, this would have felt even cooler if any of these emotional beats were landing." It was a bit jarring to have a character gleefully mowing down enemies with a giant hammer/gun combo one second, only for them to be horrified by their actions the next. You c??an't have it ??both ways.

While The Witcher's show, novels, and games feel like close siblings, Arcane and League feel like distantly related cousins who see each other once every few years at a wedding or funeral. I guess it was silly of me to think that Arcane's story could change my mind. No matter how interested in the characters I may or may not be af?ter watching, the game is always going to be part of a genre that I just can't quite get into.

I'll be watching you

One of the best parts of The Game Awards every year, in my opinion, is finding out which musical guest will be performing at the show. It can sometimes be jarring to see beloved bands like CHVRCHES or Green Day inserted in the middle of such a meme-worthy event, but it can still make for some pretty awesome performances, plus it helps? break up the monotony of the award presentations after ??a few hours. As Geoff Keighley just announced on Twitter, this year's special guest will be none other than 17-time Grammy Award-winning rock legend Sting.

Before going solo, Sting served as the frontman for The Police, best known for tracks like "Roxanne," "Every Breath You Take," and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." He will be performing his song "What Could Have Been," which is an original track from the soundtrack of Arcane, a Netflix animated series based on the lore of League of Legends.

//twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/?14657281?76722628608

The show's soundtrack is chock-full of songs from really talented, established artists, such as Bea Miller, Woodkid, and Pusha T just to name?? a few and who could ?forget that banger of a main theme by none other than Imagine Dragons. "What Could Have Been," which also features artist Ray Chen, can be heard in the show during Episode 9, the final episode of the season.

Arcane has been a huge success on pretty much every front, so it comes as a surprise to no one that the show has already been greenlit for a second season. I've personally really enjoyed having a way into the world of League of Legends that I otherwise wouldn't have, and the music that comes along with i?t is well-deserving of the praise it's receiving.

Sting is only one of the featured musical acts that ??will be present at the event this year, as more are slated to be announced in the coming weeks. The Game Awards will take place on Thursday, December 9th at 8pm ET / 5pm PT, and will be available to stream on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and more.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda

Arcane, Riot's new Netflix show based on the lore of the League of Legends universe, has been nothing short of a hit since its release a few weeks ago. It's garnered nearly universal praise across the internet, and is currently sitting with a 9.5 on Metacritic. Just when we thought we had heard everyone's take on the show, though, none other than famed game developer Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to let us know about his feelings on Arcane.

//twitt?er.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN??/status/1465105498873626625

There's certainly nothing ambiguous about saying "This is awesome! It's great!" At this point, Kojima is best known as one of the greatest storytel??lers in games, so this is tremendously high prais?e coming from him. I just know the folks over at Riot have to be stoked to see this.

The real kicker from this tweet, though, is that Kojima didn't just let us in on his opinion of the show he also divulged the fact that he was invited to a preview of Arcane before it aired, but decided to pass on it at the?? time, and now regrets that decision. It wouldn't surprise me if he was just too busy to go, but I'm sure the positive attention the show has gotten on social media helped bring it to Kojima's attention??.

A poster for the Netflix series Arcane

In another tweet in the same thread, he goes on to call the show a "digital video achievement between realism and art," likening it to other animated shows and movies such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Love, Death & Robots, and Witness.

I can't help but agree with Kojima here, not only because I am also a proponent of highly stylized animation, but also because I was reluctant to try Arcane and ended up really, really enjoying it. My own hesitancy came from the fact that I had only ever played League of Legends once and wasn't familiar with any of the lore, so I assumed that I wouldn't be interested in the world of the show. There's no way to kno?w what Kojima's reasoning was for not turning up to that preview, but I'm glad we were both able to overcome our reluctance and give the show a fair shot.

As my mom used to say, you reap what you sow

No one likes coming to terms with the fact that many of our heroes are monsters, but hey, here we are. Turns out one of the most beloved game studios of all time so beloved, in fact, that they have their own convention every year is home to some bad people. If only the women working t?here had been trying to tell us this for years, maybe this all could have been avoided.

Now it's not just the victims of these bad players' actions who are speaking up, but almost the entirety of Blizzard's staff, as well as heads of other huge game companies like PlayStation and Xbox. Unl??ike other studios' allegations and lawsuits that could be more easily swept under the rug, the skeletons in Blizzard's closet are on full display for the world to see, and it has me wondering whether it means things are actually going to change for once.

Blizzard has been a tentpole of the games industry for decades, but now, they're at an impasse, and their next move will determine the gaming landscape for years to come. Right now the biggest call to action is the remo?val of Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, which would really be the bare minimum at this point, but definitely a step in the right direction.

The Orc statue outside of Blizzard's campus in Irvine

This is the best chance Blizzard has at showing their company and the public that they actually care about making a change. I'm not a business-minded person in the slightest, so I don't know the nuance of how any of this works, but the way I see it is that anything other than getting rid of Kotick would be the final nail in the coffin for Blizzard. Maybe it's that they've had plenty of senior developers jumping ship, or that they're scared of a potential takeover, but at this point, there is no excuse.

The way I see it, there are two options either Activision Blizzard removes Kotick at the very least, and hopefully continues to evaluate how the company is run and take out anyone else who is causing harm??, or theydo nothing, I guess? It's hard to believe that this could actually be the case considering the outcry and it being a generally terrible situation that needs to be amended, but unfortunately we've been let down before.

It's just that if Blizza?rd refuses to make significant changes, I think it's over for them. Admitting that they're wrong and doing everything they can to fix the company culture they've created is the only way forward. Because those senior staff have been leaving huge projects in droves, without any sort of substantial change, I can't see any other veteran game devs worth their salt wanting to jump in to take their spots anytime soon. Without that experienced staff, their games will suffer, simple as that.

This won't just be a matter of public opinion of Blizzard, but a crumbling of the projects tha??t have made the company successful to begin with, as well as? potentially successful in the future.

A crowd of gamers at BlizzCon

It's interesting looking back at Riot after the exposé about their workplace mistreatment went public in the summer of 2018. At first, there was some apprehension about whether any action was really taken, but from what I can understand as of now in 2021, the company has made huge strides to prevent the locker-room-bro culture from continuing, building up their female developers, and diversifying their teams quite a bit. From what I've heard from friends that work there, it's not perfect but it's a ??genuinely nice place to work where they feel supported and heard.

And just look at how Riot is doing now. They now have multiple franchises that are absolutely killing it with some of the most popular games in the world, and now they've successfully broken into other types of media as well, like television. Correlation does not mean causation, but part of me has to wonder whether they've been able to excel so much over the past few years because they placed a greater focus on their employees' well??being.

I want this same future for Blizzard. Saying that I want every game employee to be happy and healthy and feeling fulfil??led by the work they're doing should not have to feel like something out of a fairytale, but here we are. They have a choice to make, and an easy one from where I'm standing, but it's only a matter of time before we see what path they've chosen, for better or for worse.

Legends of Runeterra, a card game that shares its world of Runeterra with League of Legends, has officially revealed its new single-player mode. The Path of Champions is a new way to play PvE in Legends of Runeterra, and the key difference between this and other single-player offerings from LoR is all in the story.

The mode goes live on Nov. 10, but we got ??a chance to check ??out some of the content ahead of time. You progress along a path of branching nodes, choosing different routes that might offer upgrades, boons, or unique encounters.

As part of the launch, Riot is celebrating the release of the Arcane series on Netflix with a sto?ry-based narrative set in Piltover and Zaun. This was the area we got to check out, as I piloted a Jinx deck through the under??world and up into Piltover.

One big takeaway from this special campaign was the incorporation of story, which made it stand out not just from Runterra's other offerings like the Lab of Legends, but many other run-based deckbuilders. If you like the world of League of Legends and Run??eterra in general, Path of Champions real??ly showcases it all in a new light with animated comics and voiceovers.

There are even branching narrative choices, which can result in different endings for your run depending on what you choose. As a fan of the Jinx and Vi-focused narrative that Arcane is zooming in on, it worked pretty well for me.

It may be contingent on whether you enjoy playing the base game of Legends of Runeterra, but the nice part is that Riot's card game is free-to-play. If the idea of a branching run-based mode with lots of League of Legends lore sou??nds appealing, it's?? free to download and try out.

A bevy of new content arrives alongside Path of Champions, including a new Mega Event Pass with emotes, guardians, and card backs, as well as some Gilded skins for Arcane-related cards lik?e Vi, Jinx, Caitlyn, Ekko??, and Jayce.

Legends of Runeterra wil?l launch its Path? of Champions mode on Nov. 10, 2021.

It'll be a Riot

It won't be too long before League of Legends has its own Netflix series alongside the many other video game adaptations on the service. A new teaser today announced that Arcane will arrive this fall.

Announced during Riot's 10-year anniversary stream, Arcane is a new animated series that is about two "iconic League champions," and the power that will eventually tear them apart. Following a delay last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, today we got confirmation that Arcane is coming to Netflix and a glimpse of the action, including what looks like current League of Legends champions Jinx and Vi.

Netflix has had no shortage of video game adaptations making their way to the service. Dota: Dragon's Blood has already been locked in for a second season, Castlevania is gearing up for its final season this month (though more could be on the way), and a CGI Resident Evil arrives later this year.

With the world of Runeterra soon joining them, there's plenty of streaming series to go around. Hopefully a firm date's on the way for League's foray into the world of animated series.
