When it comes to having a cheek??y gaming session, the Wii U might not be your first choice in terms of chosen platform. How??ever, just because it’s an older platform, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a huge number of absolutely incredible games to play on it.

I have?? fond memories of my Wii U, although sadly, it died a child’s drink spillage-related death a few years ago. It’s been a while since I picked one up, but I can still vividly remember playing on it for hours. Most of those hours were pumped into a select few games, so with that knowledge, here are my 10 favorite titles on the Wii U, in no particular order.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2

Nintendo is often considered to be the most family-friendly of all gaming platforms, so the fact that Bayonetta 2 (and the first game) exists on? the platform is still something that I can’t quite wrap my head around. It’s filled with expletives right from the very beginning, is filled to the brim with fan service animations that do nothing to progress the story, and is as far from family-friendly as you can possibly get.

However, it does exist, and it’s incredibly fun to play. The hack-and-slash gameplay is weirdly addictive, and if you look past the astonishing amount of jiggle physics, you might even enjoy the story. Or, you know, if you’re into that kind of thing, then you might not eve?n need to pay attention to the story. To each their own.

ZombiU

ZombiU
Image via Ubisoft

Look, I know, zombies and games involving them have been done to death (no pun intended, but I’ll take all the puns I can get). However, ZombiU has stood the test of time in terms of anxiety induction, and there’s something it has that can’t be said about many other ??human-eating-walking-corpse titles â€?pe?rmadeath.

Waking up in a London filled with flesh-chomping undead creepers is bad enough, but progressing through the story only to die and wake up as someone entirely different ?is definitely a frustration. Not to mention the fact that if you want to get your stuff back from your former self, you’ll probably have to kill them, which isn’t ideal if you become attached to who you once were.

Yoshi’s Woolly World

Yoshi's Woolly World
Image via Good-Feel

There has alwa??ys been something undeniably cute and comforting about Yoshi. He’s a dinosaur with huge eyes and a bright, happy smile. Now take that cuteness and convert it into crochet, and everyone’s favorite dino becomes infinitely more adorable.

Everything in Yoshi’s Woolly World has a touch of arts and crafts to it, with springy tree trunks, knitted backdrops, and, of course, Yoshi in all his crocheted glory. The aim of the game is to retrieve the stolen yarn pieces from Kamek, who rather handily has dropped a bunch of pieces while making his escape, in order to ?knit your friends back together.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I think it would be almost criminal to write up a list of the best Wii U games and not include a Zelda game, and Breath of the Wild is definitely the stand-out title that was released for? the platform. Some of you might not even know that it wasn’t a Switch exclusive release because I’d forgotten un??til looking into what to include here.

Breath of the Wild is often heralded as the best Zelda game to date, and for good reason. It was the first fully open-world title and is filled with beautiful areas to explore, collectibles to discover, and quests to complete. If you’re looking for a Zelda game to play on the Wii U, then this would definitely be my first recomme?ndation.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

Xenoblade Chronicles X

If you’re struggling to wait for the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X on Nintendo Switch next year, then you can fork out for a Wii U (unless you already have your old one; how very forward-thinking of you) and play Xenoblade Chronicles X on it.

Xenoblade Chronicles X allows you to explore the expansive open world of Mira, consisting of five wildly different continents that are unlocked as you progress and complete quests alongside a party of fellow BLADE members. And, if exploration and quest completion weren’t enough to make you want to play, there’s also a number of Skell mechs that can be purchased and upgraded in the latter half of ??a playthrough.

Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart 8
Image via Nintendo

Mario Kart 8 is either a fond memory or a frustrating experience that you never want to r?epeat again, depending on your skill level and whether or not you chose to play with the people who claim to love you yet throw every power-up possible in your direction. As you can tell, I fall into the “frustrating experiencecamp on this one.

With that said, there’s no denying that Mario Kart 8 is incredibly fun to play solo or with friends who might go a little easier on you than mine did. You can choose your difficulty, pick your driver and vehicle, and then try to come first. It’s not limited to characters from just the Mario universe, either. You can race as characters from other franchises like The Legend of Zelda or Splatoon or even go in as your own Mii.

Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin's Creed III
Image via Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed III was released on multiple platforms back in 2012, including the Wii U. It centered around Ratonhnaké ton (or Connor, if you want to make things easier on yourself), an assassin in Colonial America at around the time of the American Revolution. As a bit of a history nerd, this is the kind of Assassin’s Creed that sparks a huge amount of joy in me.

Of course, Assassin’s Creed III was filled with freerunning and parkour adventures, but it also introduced something new naval gameplay. Connor becomes the captain of the Aquila, and it can be upgraded and improved with new weapons, armor, and crew. Admittedly, the ship part of Assassin’s Creed III was my least favorite part of the game, but I’ve come to lea?rn that I might be in the minority on that fr??ont.

Pikmin 3

Pikmin 3
Image via Nintendo

As with all Pikmin games, the third in the series is filled with fights, puzzles, and an endless grind of resource gat?hering. The cuteness of the Pikmin is ever-present, and there’s something incredibly addictive about this one, which would explain why I’ve replayed it about five times in the last decade.

Along with the well-loved Red, Yellow, and Blue Pikmins, Pikmin 3 introduces a couple of new ?colors with their own skills - Grey Pikmin, which can destroy barriers and are immune to crush damage, and pink Winged Pikmin, which can attack from the skies and also soar through them over obstacles that would otherwise be impassable.

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros.
Image via Nintendo

There are two types of people when it comes to playing Super Smash Bros. - those who memorize the combinations and inevitably win every battle, and those who button mash as if their life depends on it and while they may lose the battle, they enjoy the therapeutic process of trying to stay on the platform??s.

One of the best things about Super Smash Bros. is the number of characters from different franchises. There are playable characters from Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Xenoblade Chronicles, Duck Hunt, and even Wii Fit of all things. And these are just in the base game, never mind downloadable characters like Cloud Strife and Sega from Bayonetta. There’s endless fun to be had with Super Smash Bros., and possibly some arguments, so ?try not to take it too seriously.

Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends
Image via Ubisoft

Rayman Legends is another title that has been released on various platforms, including the Wii U. It’s a local co-op platformer that is ca?pable of inciting a huge amount of frustration. However, regardless of how frustrated it might make you, you forgive it because it’s addictive, and getting through each level leav?es you feeling accomplished.

Events in Rayman Legends take place a whole century after those of Rayman Origins, and you’ll need to travel across worlds and defeat world bosses in order t??o complete the story. Collecting Teensies unlocks ne?w worlds, and there are new playable characters to unlock along the way, such as Barbara the Barbarian Princess and her various family members.

'Oh Boy! Assassin's Creed III' - No one ever

Look, I'm going to be honest with you guys. I hate Assassin's Creed III. I understand some people feel it is a great game and it does have a very interesting setting, but it was easily one of the worst titles of 2012. I didn't even play it until years later (2014) and on PC, bu??t the game still had a bunch of issues. That final chase scene was one of the worst bits of gameplay I've ever dealt with; I don't know why Connor likes running up invisible walls or can't jump over fire, but I guess Ubisoft wants me to experience their grand finale in a highly scripted manner.

Regardless, I wouldn't consider next month's line-up of Games with Gold bad if Assassin's Creed III was the only questionable title. For whatever reason, Microsoft has deemed Xbox One owners should get Watch_Dogs, so now I really have to wonder if Ubisoft made some kind of deal to ruin Xbox Gamers' June. At least the other two games are good, even if Dragon Age is eight years old.

For Xbox One users, you'll be able to grab Speedrunners (finally) from June 1 to the 30th and pass over Watch Dogs from June 16 - July 15. Xbox 360 users can forget Assassin's Creed III from June 1 - June 15 and nab Dragon Age: Origins from June 16 - June 30. Microsoft is also throwing in a freebie of some Phantom Dust DLC, which should work on Xbox One and PC (the game is an Xbox Play ??Anywhere title).

It should also be noted that all 360 titles offered on Games with Gold are backward compatible, so if you feel the need to destroy your soul, you can relive the horror of Assassin's Creed III on your Xbox One. If you actually do enjoy the game, then more power to you. I wish I could see what you ?find so appealing.

Why wasn't it IV?

Ubisoft has been going all in for the celebration of its 30th anniversary. For the past six months, it has given out some pretty excellent titles from the history of the studio. Sadly, the final month of the year won't be anything noteworthy, as instead of gifting out a decent game in the series, Ubisoft is opting for Assassin's Creed III.

I can sort of understand why some people might dig this one. The setting is quite well realized and the beginning of the game is actually pretty cool. I?? love that you start off as a Templar (without realizing it) and the story does a lot to try and blur the lines between good and evil, instead of painting everything as black and white. Still, the general gameplay, the tired scenarios, and the lac??k of polish hurt this title.

I also can't get around the "Forrest Gump"-style feeling the narrative evokes. I know this is supposed to be historical fiction, but I take so many issues with Paul Revere becoming a glorified GPS. I also can't stand how Connor is present at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, since that is just plain stupid. At least the series rebounded with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

You will be a?ble to grab this game through Uplay on December 7??. Don't even bother trying the multiplayer on PC as not a single soul is playing it. I trudged through this game two years ago and I couldn't even pretend to get into the multiplayer. Maybe this promotion will increase the player population.

Also, do yourself a favor and ignore the DLC. It is completely w??orthless.

How the hell did I miss this?

The downloadable content for Assassin's Creed III has more than a despotic King Washingto??n going for it. It also grants new abilities to Connor, and you can see probably the most terrifying of? them in this new trailer.

The "Power of the Wolf" is one thing, allowing Connor to become invisible, but Ubisoft took things too far with the "Wolf Pack" power. When activated, as you might expect from the name, this ability summons a pack of wolves which will attack enemies. What I didn't expect is that the wolves are invisible too.

Great. I'm not going to sleep for weeks now thinking that there could be a pack of translucent wolves waiting around any corner to tear my throat out. Meanwhile, the next chapter of the Tyranny of King Washington DLC for Assassin's Creed III, releases on March 19.

The "Washington Edition" collects all of the DLC

Assassin's Creed III: Washington Edition was spotted by a couple of German news sites (n2gmedia and Gamestrust). What essentially boils down to a "Game of the Year" edition, t??he collection will include the game, and a all of the downloadable content packs that have been released:

  • The Hidden Secrets pack: Three new missions including the Mayan Ruins content, two new outfits, and two multiplayer characters
  • The Battle Hardened pack: three new multiplayer characters, new maps
  • The Tyranny of King Washington: The three additional alternate reality pieces of single-player content that sees you transforming into a bear, eagle, and wolf. And also summoning invisible wolves because videogames.

The Washington Edition will be out in Europe on March 28 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with prices listed at 69,95 € for? the consoles, and 54,95 € for the PC. We've reached out to Ubisoft to see if other territories will also being getting this collection of cont?ent.

King Washington will have to wait a bit

[Update: people across th??e net are reporting the DLC is now accessible, after not appearing this morning.]

In preparation for my upcoming impressions of the new Assassin's Creed III King Washington DLC (800 MSP, $9.99), I booted up my 360 this morning to grab the download. I found that it was readily available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for all to see -- but not for me, a Season Pass holder.

Odds are the DLC will be up later today through the in-game Season Pass menu, but this is just yet another consequence of the system itself. Many Assassin's Creed fans, some of who took off of work, are understandably frustrated at the ina?bility to access the content they ??paid for at the same time as everyone else.

If you're su?ffering from this issue on the 360, PS3, or PC, just know you're not alone, and sit tight. There's still no word on a Wii U release date for this D??LC.

Toys will include codes for the games too

McFarlane Toys and Ubisoft are teaming up to produce a ton of Assassin's Creed action figures. Some of the first toys will be based on Haytham Kenway, and Connor from Assassin's Creed III. We can expect two Connor variants in fact, one based on his main look and another based on his new upcoming outfit from the Tyranny of King George storyline.

The figures will come in at six inches tall, feature 25?? points of articulation, and they'll all include unlock codes for stuff in the actual games. The figures be available at pretty much every major retailer around the world this Summer, and will run for around $14.99 - $16.99.

Finally, the silence is broken

For weeks now, Ubisoft has remained tight-lipped in regards to Assassin's Creed III DLC on the Wii U. We knew it was confirmed, but we had no dates or confirmation of which pieces would be coming.

As of now, the Hidden Secrets (single player, $4.99) and Battle Hardened (multiplayer, $9.99) DLCs are available for purchase on the Wii U eShop. The Tyranny of King Washington campaign is also confirmed straight from Ubisoft. Sadly, it looks like Wii U owners are left out in the cold in regards to the Season Pass, which would have saved you a few bucks.

Hardened, hehe

The second downloadable content pack for Assassin's Creed III is now out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with the PC version set to arrive on January 15. The ?Battle Hardened Pack adds to the multiplayer, bringing three new playable characters named the Gov??ernor, Highlander, and Coyote Man. There will also be three new maps, Charlestown, Fort St-Mathieu, and Saint Pierre.

The new DLC will run $9.99, and won't cost extra for those that have the Season Pass (duh.) As for future content, The Tyranny of King Washington should be on the way soon. You'll have to fantasize about George Washington not saving the British children for just a little longer.

Also, go look at the sick Assassin's Creed China fan art!

Tomahawks!

I love cosplay. A lot. It's always a blast seeing people go all out to dress up as characters they love and strut their stuff at conventions like Dragon*Con, PAX, Comic-Con, and way more. One of my favorite cosplayers to follow is Jessica Nigri, who most of you will know from her work on Lollipop Chainsaw.

Jessica's latest sees her taking on the role of Connor Kenway from Assassin's Creed III. Her Facebook fan page features several shots, such as this one where's she about to tomahawk someone in the face. Or this one where she's reflecting on how awesome it was to smash a tomahawk into? someone's face?.

My favorite from her photoshoot? Oh it's eas??ily this o?ne:

Following word that Assassin's Creed III had accrued 3.5 million sales within its first week, Ubisoft is reporting that the game is the "fastest-selling in the company's history." In terms of total worldwide? s??ell-through, we're looking at 7 million units and counting.

??Other figures revealed include three billion in-game assassinations and 82 centuries of game time played to date. The statistic I'm waiting to hear Ubisoft report, however, is how many dogs were petted. Surely they have the technology to track suc??h things, right?

Ubisoft is working on a fix

The new Hidden Secrets downloadable content for Assassin's Creed III has an issue which can cause players to lose their in-game progress. Users have reported the nasty bug on the Ubisoft forums and, thankfully, the company has reproduced the problem and is work?ing to address it.

"From what we can tell, this problem se?ems to be rare?? and should generally only affect a very small number of players," wrote a representative. "That said, we're taking the speedy and complete resolution of this very seriously."

Ubisoft did have some advice for how to avoid this mess: "Do not load your saved AC3 game while the DLC is downloading in the background. This appears to be the key trigger for this bug. You can do anythin?g else you want to do, just don't load up your saved game and play it while the DLC is downloading." Better safe than sorry.

Prepare to scroll

Following Ubisoft's hefty day-one patch for Assassin's Creed III, the company has another update in the works that is even more significant. Due ?out by the end of next week, this "Thanksgiving Patch" will work to improve a number of issues in both the single-player and multiplayer.

While watching Conrad play the game for review prior to full release, I was eager to get my hands on a retail copy, but haven't yet had the opportunity to do so. Between all of these fixes, maybe that's not such a bad thing after ??all. Some of these bugs sound rather nasty.

Multiplayer

- Players are now granted Abstergo points normally even if one or several players get the idle state at the e??nd of the session (The idle players do not get a??ny Abstergo points)

Hang together, or hang separately

Assassin's Creed III is likely to be one of the most massive titles of 2012. As vast ?as the American frontier it portrays and able to consume quite a few dozen hours with its single-player content alone, it is ambitious, visually stunning and packed with things to do.

Whether or not many of? ??these things are enjoyable depends on how much you like busywork.

Assassin's Creed III (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed], Wii U)
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Released: October 30, 2012 (PS3, 360) / November 18, 2012 (Wii U) / November 20, 2012 (PC)
MSRP: $59.99

Following the messages hidden within his geneti??c memory, series protagonist Desmond and the team of Assassins supporting him have found the location of ruins left behind by the precursor race which once held dominion over the Earth. Now, they are in a desperate search to learn the secrets of this place, hoping to discover what happened to that lost race and if what they left behind might save humanity from an impending solar event threatening to destroy the world as we know it. But to reach the central chamber of these ruins, Desmond will need a key: an amulet lost hundreds of years ago, hidden by one of his ancestors, the location once again stored in Desmond's DNA and to be discovered through the power of the Animus (a device which places its user into a simulation, allowing them to experience the lives of their ancestors).

It's almost impossible to discuss the story elements of Assassin's Creed III without spoiling it to some degree, and to go much further than this would risk ruining a numbe??r of the cleverer twists and turns in the 10-12 hour primary quest line. While there are always risks in an open-world game of disrupting the pace of a story, it feels easy to drop in and out of the main quest line without feeling like some?thing has been missed. A tome's worth of supplemental material (provided in-character by the modern Assassin team's researcher) can bring players up to speed quickly in an entertaining fashion should any confusion arise.

While the tale does a?? fine job of engagement, for the most part, what is happening outside of the Animus simulation often feels more urgent and interesting than examining the role of Assassins and Templars in the American War of Independence. The fate of the Precursors and their efforts to avoid that fate are uncovered by exploring the ruins further, and the player is provided several opportunities to go deeper in this pursuit as the game progresses. Inside the simulation, the story makes an effort toward having the player question the philosophical differences between two organizations and whether "freedom" as a concept is merely a matter of perception. However, most of the cast are only lightly developed and the character of Connor (whom the player will spend most of their time controlling) is almost annoying in his blind, obstinate adherence to the idea of all mankind desiring and having a right to freedom.

Connor himself is a bit disappointing as a character. Whereas other heroes of the series experience a process of learning about the Creed and what it means for them and their time in history, this is largely disregarded for Connor, who (despite all the extraordinary things which he experiences) doesn't exhibit significant development through the course of? the plot and rarely demonstrates any emotional range except when it's appropriate for him to display seething disgust, puzzled confusion or general disapproval. While the approach of resolute determination even in the face of death works brilliantly for the villainous Templars, putting them among the best enemies in videogames, it's less effective for Connor, whose simplis??tic perspective often comes across as naive.

What Connor lacks i?n terms of engagement from a character perspective, he makes up for with physicality. Free-running has been dramatically improved in this installment, granting a greater sense of empowerment while reducing frequency of instances where the character jumps in an unintended direction because the game misinterprets the player's intent. Spotting traversal lines through environments becomes second nature quickly, even in dense forest regions, a credit to their design. At the same time, control has been simplified to a single button to engage free-running and the game does a generally excellent job of providing a wide enough range in acceptable player input to ensure that characters go exactly where desired. It isn't perfect and will occasionally fail the player, which is still annoying, but the problem is rare enough at this point to be mostly forgivable.

Connor is an almost unstoppable force in a combat situation, due in no small part to furthe?r simplification of the me?chanics established in past games. Differences between melee weapons seem marginal at best and all th?at seems to be required to overcome any enemy is a small degree of patience in waiting for their inevitable attack so that it can be blocked and countered, opening the opportunity for instant kills of additional enemies. The window to block attacks is wide open and pressing the block button will interrupt nearly any of Connor's attack animations, making the vast majority of enemies total pushovers. Later foes can resist this "block then stab" technique, requiring instead that they be blocked by pressing one button, have their defenses eliminated by a second and then killed, but that's about as hard as it ever gets (save a few specific exceptions), making the employment of other methods (such as rope arrows, trip mines and smoke bombs) more a matter of ?personal preference and experimentation than practical application.

Not only are the enemies significantly less competent fighters than Connor, they're also pretty terrible at ?chasing him down when you don't feel like fighting. Most of this is down to how easy it has become to hide from enemies with the advent of new hiding spots (such as tall grass and shrubbery), the improved free-running controls, and changes to the blending mechanics which no longer require set groupings of people to constitute a crowd but merely need a couple of NPCs near the player's position to blend in. Both of these types of hiding spots require no delay in their execution, no special animations which could give an enemy enough time to round a corner and spot Connor, and enemies aren't particularly dogged in their pursuit once you've secured a hiding place, making it far easier to escape than in past games.

There's more to do in the American frontier than in any prior installment, and players will spend more than half of the game's main campaign missions discovering more activities to engage in. Collection goals remain a major component, with chests, feathers and pages from various editions of Benjamin Franklin's almanacs dotting the landscape, waiting to be discovered. Hunting lodges ask for the player to kill animals in the frontier with a variety of techniques, while districts of the game's two major city regions (Boston and New York) feature their own shopping list quests for the player to complete and a collection of "trinket" items progresses a seperate quest to discover the lost treasure of Captain Kidd. Other legends weave their way into these secondary quests, told as campfire tales between frontiersman, and the pla??yer will discover answers ??to Bigfoot and other American myths by exploring these quest lines.

Players will also be given an opportunity to rebuild the Assassin's Guild in the Americas with Homestead and District Liberation quests. The Homestead quests practically constitute their own separate campaign from the main story, as Connor plays shepherd to a variety of characters displaced by the conflict around them and provides a place to start their lives anew. Each of these characters contributes to the homestead by making resources available for sale and completing later quests to improve their lives also improves the range of goods they offer. These resources can be sold to trading posts for cash by sending convoys or used in the creation of new items through a crafting system which allows players to make items based upon discovered recipes or experiment ??with resources and artisans to create new items without such guidance.

In the cities, the player will discover opportunities to rescue people from the oppression of English forces and turn them to Connor's cause. Once enough have been rescued, a final mission opens for the district which will allow a new Assassin to be recruited. Recruited assassins can be used to provide distraction, protection or just outright elimination, each liberated district p??roviding a new technique with the completion of its quest and an additional use of these abilities. In addition, guild recruits can be sent on missions throughout the colonies to liberate them from Templar control, earning money, resources and experience levels for the Assassin sent.

One particularly smart and ambitious change to the cities of Assassin's Creed III lies in the unlocking of new fast travel locations. In prior games, these locations were discovered on the overworld and would put the player through an exploration of a closed environment to connect it with other fast travel locations. Here, Ubisoft has instead decided to create an entire underground maze beneath each of the two cities where these locations can be found. Instead of finding entrances to a (never clea?rly defined) network of passages, the player instead explores the actual route the fast travel system represents to find the exits, which can then be accessed through the map screen and instantly returned to. It's a great change and quite satisfying to explore and one of the few optional objectives with any real impact on the larger game.

In terms of being downright fun to play, however, few thing??s found in the game can top the naval battles. Accessed by speaking with a harbormaster, these missions put you at the wheel of a ship, giving? orders to the crew to raise or lower sails and target enemies with cannons. Combat is frenzied, owing in part to the camera's semi-locked perspective behind the player, as well as the pressure of waiting for weapons to aim and reload. These battles require some quick thinking and execution to complete and its highly enjoyable to watch enemy ships swallowed by the ocean after firing a barrage of cannons upon them.

Those who glean great satisfaction from completing a checklist will be in heaven, as Assassin's Creed III is lousy with them. But if there is a desire to have these secondary elements contribute to the completion of the game's primary objectives, it seemingly isn't held by the developer, as the optional quests tend to only make it easier to complete more optional quests. Some of this is simply a result of not wanting to force the player to pursue activities they don't enjoy, a pitfall of the open-world game design, but the rewards for completing the objectives aren't commensurate with the effort required to accomplish them and are rarely meaningful in terms of enhancing play. Assassin Guild assignments, for example, reward with money and items but the experience levels earned by recruits only serve to facilitate completion of further assignments, making the whole thing a largely busywork affair with nary any payoff. Chests usually contain some cash and ??the recipes needed to make items which fulfill shopping list quests, and the artisans in the homestead are discovered and improved in order to produce these items. And while consumable items can also be produced by the artisans (as well as items which increase maximum capacity of these consumables), there's little reason to do so other than the saving of a few sheckels, hardly worth the effort of going through a repetitive series of menus.

Menus themselves are a source of occasional frustration because of their organization. Four separate menus exist but none of them are unified and there's no easy hop from one menu to the ?next without resuming the game should you accidentally make the wrong choice. Two individual menus exist for selecting equipment and the abilities of your Guild recruits when they very easily could have been reduced to one, and the latter is the only way to access the submenu for sending recruits on their missions. Likewise, the map screen contains lists of objectives and allows for th??e tracking of quest lines, but a separate top-level menu for the Animus is where you find research entries with expository material and other options. It's not unnavigable, but annoys nonetheless.

Although many of the quest-oriented bits of secondary content can be a bit tir??esome, there are other fun activities to engage in. There are a number of games of skill which can be played against the game's AI for cash, with skill levels varying from one location to the next. Few things break up the process of collecting objects better than a round of bocce with George W??ashington.

The series' beloved multiplayer mode returns in Assassin's Creed III and is just as much fun as it has been in prior installments. The gameplay in this portion of the title is similar to that of its predecessors, where players must track down and eliminate a specific targets or complete other objectives without drawing attention to themselves in a variety of modes based on concepts of deathmatch, "capture-the-flag," and "King of the Hill." Players earn points for successful kills (receiving bonuses for doing so stealthily), as well as for successfully preventing attempts on their own li?ves and escaping pursuers. Points earned through play are applied as experience and reaching new levels unlocks new abilities, customization options and stories based on the various playable characters.

The most enticing aspect of the multiplayer is the new Wolfpack mode. This cooperative game for up to four players pits?? assassins as a team against increasingly capable AI opponents. Operating under a time limit, making kills awards more time in addition to points, allowing players to progress through the twenty-five sta??ges necessary to complete a round. This spin on team-based play is tremendously enjoyable in a group and coordinating to hunt down targets highly satisfying. As an added bonus, players can attempt the mode alone if they can't find others to support their efforts or wish to truly challenge themselves.

Ubisoft has chosen to implement their uPlay Passport system to limit -- but not prevent -- player access to multiplayer in Assassin's Creed III. While a uPlay Passport (included with all new copies) is required to enjoy most of the elements of the mode, including much of the customization option?s, players without one will still be able to experience multiplayer up to a level cap.

When it comes right down to it, cohesion (or lack thereof) is the main issue with Assassin's Creed III. There are dozens of secondary elements which make up the content of the game, but they offer little in terms of reward and rarely contribute anything to the Assassin/Templar conflict. While the game is often quite fun, beautiful to look at and empowering to the player, it doesn't offer much challenge beyond the endurance necessary to complete all of the single-player campaign elements. That said, it does offer answers to many of the questions players have in terms of the series' plot up to now and is easy to become absorbed in. Fans of Assassin's Creed should be am??ply?? satisfied by these aspects, but some of the shallowness found might be displeasing to lovers of other open-world titles which do a better job of making player investment feel meaningful.

Assassin's Creed III releases in stores tomorrow and, as you m??ight expect, Ubisoft is celebrating with a promotional trailer. That's how publishers get down, you know, and this one is full of fire, violence and one really pissed-off Native Ame?rican.

We'll have our review of Assassin's Creed III tomorrow morning! Are you hyped?

God bless America

Look at this beast of a limited edition box for Assassin's Creed III. It's so big that I c??ouldn't even get it all in the shot. You'll see me do my best to show off the innards of this collection, which includes:

  • a copy of Assassin's Creed III
  • a 9.4 inch statue of Connor
  • an Assassin's Creed colonial-style flag kind of like the one I put on my dog
  • a metal belt buckle
  • George Washington's notebook

GameStop has this big ol' sucker available for $119.99.

Assassin's Creed III drops October 30?. Are you getting this limited edition? Or just the standard?

Doubled Revelations pre-orders already

Assassin's Creed III takes the hatchet to previous Ubisoft pre-order records to become the most pre-ordered game in the company's history. They say that the count is already more than double that of Assassin's Creed Revelations, the previous record holder.

GameStop says that it's nearly 100 percent higher than last year. I don't know how it's doing exactly at Amazon, but it's topping the charts there. Maybe that has something to do with their bonus that gives an exclu??sive axe weapon and a $5 video credit.

If you aim to get in on this record number, you still have time before the ;October?? 30 Xbox 360 or PS3 launch. Or, if you pl??an to play on Wii U, November 18.

Have you pre-ordered Assassin's Creed III? If not, do you plan to?

Forget Squall and his candy-ass gunblade

Hot on the heels of Corridor Digital's Assassin's Creed III short film is this rock arrangement by Warialasky -- consider it a spiritual follow-up to the Skyrim cover from earlier this year. With all this Ass Creed love lately, you'd think there was a new gam?e around the corner or s??omething.

The song is great and all, but t??he star of the show is the ingenious amalgamation of musket and tomahawk that I hereby dub "muskethawk." The muskethawk is a versatile instrument, able to embed itself in a man's torso then fire off a round for extra lethality. That Ubisoft didn't think of this first and put it in the game ought to be grounds for major point ?deductions.

It'??s alright, Ubi. Add it as DLC later and all will be forgiven.

Benedict Arnold can't catch a break

It was briefly announced back at gamescom that PlayStation 3 users would be getting some exclusive downloadable content for Assassin's Creed III??. These sorts of deals aren't always the most interesting in execution, though I have to admit that Ubisoft has me intrigued with this one.

PS3 copies of the game will include a voucher good for four missions which involve West Point and, by extension, Benedict Arnold. PlayStation Blog has quoted scriptwriter Matt Turner as saying this content is not like the King George DLC.

"We have some scenes that have the actual words spoken by key players in the events at West Point, according to the records from the cou?rt proceedings following what happened. On the other side of things," says Turner, "we needed to inject it with some gameplay so there are some liberties in ? terms of the action. But who was there, what they did, and what happened to them is as precise as the history books would allow."

This would have made grade-school history classes decidedly more interesting. While I'll be missing out on the content, I have a feeling there will be plenty to see and do in ACIII as it stands. Then again, I've always been down with resorting to YouTube to s?ee what's what.

The British are f*cked.

Based on the upcoming Assassin's Creed III, this short film by special ef?fects video team Corridor Digital finds a band of British s??oldiers dealing with a young lad who had made an attempt on the commanding officer's life. It's all fun and games until Connor appears and goes full beast.

All the better to stab you with

Or slice, crush, pierce, and generally murder. Assassin's Creed III's Connor appears to be even less subtle than his ancestors and not exactly what I would ?consi??der assassin material. He seems to make it work, however, so more power to him.

Guns, bows, swords, axes, daggers, and rope -- it's quite the arsenal. I can't wait to try and hang an entire army. We'll ??all be able to do so come October 30 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and on November 20 on PC.

Dibs on the Native American girl!

I never realized before my hands-on time with Assassin's Creed III's multiplayer just how much fun the mode is. So much fun that it's easily going to be in my multiplayer rotation this year along side Black Ops II, Halo 4, and Hawken.

This trailer goes over the modes, abilities, and gives a great overview on what you need to know in general. It's also brutal as hell. Ubisoft stepped up the violence factor all over Assassin's Creed III like whoa.

Earlier, we heard about the Assassin's Creed III Season Pass, which provides access to? five downloadable content packs for $29.99, a 25 percent discount versus buying the add-ons individually. If you had written this off already, you'll want to hear what some of this content will be about before committing.

As far as single-player content goes, there will be three episodic packs that delve into alternate history with George Washington. The basic premise here is that, post-American Revolution, Washington "succumbs to the temptation of infinite power." It's up to you to dethrone the new tyrannical King. Uh, yes -- I would like to do that, thank you very much.

"While Assassin's Creed III concentrates on history as it happens, we wanted to take some liberties with this DLC and tell you how thin?gs 'could have happened,'" says executive producer Sebastien Puel.

There's some art to go along with these details as well; I'm suddenly feeling anxious to put extra cash aside for this stuff, a complete turnaround from this morning. The content itself will be playable across all versions of ACIII, including Wii U.

The trailers for Assassin's Creed III keep coming but they aren't getting any better. This latest effort gives a history lesson on the Boston Tea Party, where a simple misunderstanding about taxation and representation resulted in the tragic loss of a whole lot of tea (and probably some local marine wildlife; that can't have had a positive effect on the region). But there were secret events unfolding all?? around? them and those were much more important.

If you want to skip past the elementary lesson (??and the snooty voice delivering it)??, gameplay footage appears at 1:25. For, like, twelve seconds.

Just show us the game, Ubisoft. We're Amer?icans. We don't have enough history to care about, nor the wisdom to acknowledge its value. Pretty pictures, though.

Drown in the delightful smug

The concept of the developer diary has always struck me as egotistical and self-aggrandizing, but Ubisoft's "Inside Assassin's Creed III" series may be the most gloriously arrogant video series yet. Watch the video above and bask in the shameles?s pomposity.

So dramatic! So flashy! So ... a bunch of talking heads saying things nowhere near interesting enough to justify ?all that movie trai?ler music.

Of course, I say this in good fun ... and because I am envious. My job is to be egotistical and I'm not this good at it.

Ubisoft have put up the first of four planned Assassin's Creed III developer diaries, with this one focusing on the setting and the protagonist, Conner. It's hilariously dramatic and looks like something one might watch on your funny History Channel, right down?? to their choice of "historical experts". You know you've got a historically accurate game when a cosplayer and a Navy SEAL tell you that.

Regardless, I'm still pumped. However, I will surely shed tears every time I murder a poor, innocent Redcoat just for doing his job. Assassin's Creed III is launching on October 30 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and November 20 for ??PC.
