Koei Tecmo and Gust have announced the next game in the long-running and prolific Atelier series: Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian. It’s coming to PC, PS4,? PS5, and Switch in 2025.

I’m only realizing now that we skipped a year in this often-annual series. Unless you count the mobile-focused, free-to-play Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. I don’t, because I prefer to push knowledge of that sector of video games out of my brain, but I suppose Koei Tecmo and Gust do since The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian is set in the same world.

We don’t know much about it at this point beyond the short teaser trailer. It’s also going to be a paid, single-player, console-focused, offline game. Beyond that, the press release says, “this new Atelier title will embark players on a magical adventure, featuring a new protagonist.�The “magical adventure�part can be applied to every Atelier game, bu?t I gue??ss the “new protagonist�part tells us something.

This is somewhat surprising since Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land was previously announced and is also aiming for a 2025 release. It’s bold to release two titles? of these games in the same year since they’re invariably 40-50 hours long.

For a short while, I reviewed the yearly Atelier titles here at Destructoid, but I fell off with Atelier Ryza 3. By “fell off,�I mean I was practically writhing in agony at the thought of doing another. Don’t get me wrong, they’re enjoyable games. They’re often very similar but commonly come with new features and different mechanics. However, it’s 40-50 hours of microprogression-laden gameplay. Smacking res??ource nodes, filling your pockets, crafting shit. Over and over and over. It was like a targeted attack on my personality; a way of priming me for a life of boring office work.

So, my recommendation is to play at your own pace and don’t just pick up every new release, but that’s just based on my personal preferences and expe??rience.

Ryza's on the ryze

Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Gust have just announced another milestone for the Atelier Ryza series. Atel??ier Ryza: Ever Da??rkness & the Secret Hideout, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy, and Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key ??have surpassed a total of two million uni??ts shipped.

The last report came on March 17, announcing that the series had shipped 1.6 million units. This means that the Atelier Ryza series has moved over 400,000 more units in a period filled with massive attention-stealers such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Street Fighter VI, and Diablo IV. Now that's quite the feat.

To celebrate the series' success, Koei Tecmo has announced that they're willing to give out some goodies to fans; too bad that only applies to fans living in Japan.

Are you just hearing about the Atelier series for the first time? Then you'll probably be surprised to learn that this series has existed since '97. (That's older than Metal Gear Solid.) Atelier is a popular RPG series that began on Sony consoles, then gradually made its way to most other platforms. The Ryza games in the series follow Reisalin "Ryza" Stout. Ryza is an adventurer who travel??s the world looking? for recipes to further her studies in the field of alchemy.

You can play either of the three newest games in the series on PS5, Xbox X|S, Switch, and Steam. The success of Atelier Ryza will likely not slow down anytime soon either, as an anime TV adaptation will come out this summer.

Premieres in Japan this summer

Wonderful news for fans of the Atelier series, as Koei Tecmo has revealed that a new anime adaptation of Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout is c??urrently in production inc collaboration with Aniplex. The new TV series is expected to premiere in Japan this coming summer.

Not much was offered in ?the way of detail about the anime, but it is confirmed to be a straight adaptation of the 2019 video game, which saw young hero Reisalin St??out �more commonly known as "Ryza", embark upon a country-crossing series of adventures with her friends, where they become embroiled in a world of magic, alchemy, and monsters. The anime is being produced by studio Liden Films, who have a proven pedigree in adapting games and manga to the medium of animation.

Koei Tecmo and Aniplex announced that more details about the series will be revealed at the dramatically titled "Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key Launch and Anime Adapation!" event, which is scheduled to take place this Sunday at the Anime Japan 2023 expo. As you can see from the teaser trailer above, the new anime features some wonderful lineart and animation, even if the camera is a tad on th?e shame??less side.

It's a very promising look at what will no doubt be an eagerly anticipated show for the Atelier faithful.

Toil and trouble await in Salburg

Koei Tecmo has locked in a launch date for its remake of the first Atelier game. Atelier Marie Remake: Alchemist of Salburg is set to hit Switch, PlayStation 5, PS4, and PC via Ste??am on July 13, 2023.

Previously confirmed for a summer 2023 window during the recent Nintendo Direct in Japan, Atelier Marie Remake will "reintroduce" players ?to Marie, a struggling student at the Royal Academy of?? Magic. Marie's goal? Make an item within five years that will appease her teacher. But that's easier said than done.

Gathering and collecting alchemy materials, and then synthesizing them into items, is a core part of the story. You can fulfill requests for those in the town, upgrade ??your atelier, and hire little helpers to assist. On top of this, there are some RPG battles to undertake, potentially leadin?g to encounters with legendary monsters. Turns out magic school is pretty rough.

Atelier Marie Remake is playable with either the story-imposed five-year time limit, or with an "Unlimited Mode" which turns off the time crunch??. Either way, Gust's RPG gets a fresh look and a bevy of new platforms to play it on.

Stirring the pot

As the Atelier series grows in popularity, it's cool to see this piece of history get a refresh for modern systems. All the life sim elements may even seem more appealing to players now, who may have put a fair number of hours into games like Stardew Valley and are looking for a new RPG with similar vibes.

In other Atelier news, Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key is due out on March 24, 2023 after taking a one-month delay to work on the game. Even with the delay, though, the upcoming spring and summer looks to have plenty for armchair alchemists to dig ?into.

An older Atelier entry gets a modern update

One of the earlier entries in the Atelier series is getting remade for current systems. Atelier Marie Remake reimagines the original Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg, and it arrives for Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC this su??mmer.

The news arrived yesterday during the Japanese broadcast of the Nintendo Direct. While it wasn't shown in the English-language Direct, Koei Tecmo America has launched a site saying that the remake will arrive this s?ummer. We reached out and a Koei Tecmo representative confirmed that this summer is ??the worldwide release window.

The original Atelier Marie was the first in the now long-running Atelier series. First released in 1997 for the PlayStation, then later ported to Sega Saturn and Windows, i??t is the origin of the series. It follows Marie's quest to create something outs??tanding, to stand out in her class.

Back to the origin

With the Atelier series seeming to pick up steam in the west with each new entry, it's neat to see Koei Tecmo return to its roots. While Atelier Marie has seen many ports over the years, this starting slice of the series hasn't seen an of?ficial North American release yet.

For fans of the workshop-driven RPG series, this could be a good chance to see how it all started, but with a fresh update and look that adheres closer to recent entries like Ryza and Sophie.

Meanwhile, Atelier Ryza 3 was originally slated to arrive this month. But the team recently announced it's taking a one-month delay and pushing the third entry in Ry??za's adventure back to ??March 24.

The alchemy will take a bit longer

The next installment in the Atelier Ryza series is taking just a little bit more time to get it right. Koei Tecmo and the Atelier team are pushing the launch date of Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key back one month.

This moves the Atelier Ryza 3 launch to March 24, 2023, just one month removed from its previous February 24 date. In a statement on the shift, producer Junzo Hosoi says that in order to make this a "fitting finale" for Ryza and friends, the team has taken on challenges like a vast op??en field and more expressive graphics.

"Our te??am will take this additional time to fine-tune the final touches so that we can deliver to all of you who have been following the series for the best possible experience in this culminati?on of Ryza and her friend's adventures," said Hosoi. "We are making the game even better to make it worth your wait, so we appreciate your patience for just a little bit more until the game's release."

Atelier Ryza 3 will cap off the Ryza series, with a note on the site saying this is Ryza's "final summer adventure" with one final secret. It seems like the Ateli?er team wants to make sure the ending com??es together well.

After the summer is gone

One m??onth is not much in the grand scheme of things, and certainly not much compared to other game delays. And if the extra time means the Atelier studio can get everything right, that's a good thing.

The one troublesome note is that Atelier Ryza 3 now launches on the same day as the remake of Resident Evil 4. But its previous date was also in contention with another game, and inside its own genre at that, with Octopath Traveler II. Really, there's little chance of having a big week to yourself in 2023, as a bunch of games are already slated to launch in the first quarter of the ?year.
