The Steam Deck has been something of a revelation for PC gaming. This powerful device allows you to play your PC games on a portable screen, allo??wing for an experience more akin to something like the Nintendo Switch.

This is all well and good, but some PC games require the pinpoint precision of mouse-and-keyboard input. Th??at's why we're taking a look at the 15 best Steam Deck games, so you know which titles are worth playing on your portable PC device. All of the following games are marked "Steam Deck Verified," meaning you can guarantee a solid experience with these selections.

15. Phasmophobia

Hunting ghosts with friends, what could be more fun? Despite still technically being in Early Access, Phasmophobia is arguably the bes??t g??ame in its genre. You're placed on a map, which can be as small as a suburban house or as large as an entire prison, haunted by a ghost.

There are 24 different ghost types, each offering up three types of evidence to help you and your friends decipher what they are. You find this evidence using various types of ghost-hunting equipment, from spirit boxes to EMF readers. It's not entirely that simple, as these ghosts will drain your sanity before hunting and killing you. Phasmophobia is a blast, and we recommend playing?? with friends.

14. Diablo 4

Blizzard's long-awaited follow-up in its iconic ARPG series was worth the wait. Diablo 4 follows the same genera??l gameplay loop as previous?? iterations, defeating powerful enemies throughout dungeons while collecting hordes of loot to upgrade your build.

While technically an RPG, Diablo 4's quests and storyline play second fiddle to the game's unique brand of chaotic action. There's nothing quite like melting swarms of demons while finding a rare item that takes the havoc up a notch. Some might recommend a mouse and keyboard for Diablo 4,?? but you can definitely do just fine on a Steam Deck.

13. Balatro

Balatro

Balatro isn't your standard card game. There's almost too much complexity to sum up in a few sentences, but the gist of it is this: it's a roguelike deck-builder where you must score points by playin?g poker hands against blinds. With these points, you can upgrade your deck and buy joker cards, which affect the game in various ways. It's absurdly addictive and puts an impressiv?e spin on a classic card game.

Given the nature of Balatro's controls, it really doesn't matter whether you play on a regular PC or on a Steam Deck. It plays very well on Valve's portable devices, so if you're looking for a more laid-back Balatro, Steam Deck is the way to go.

12. Portal 2

Portal 2 might be well over a decade old at this point, but it can still kick it with any modern release on the market. With sharp humor, challenging puzzles, and an endlessly replayable co-op mode, Portal 2 remains one of the best video games ever made.

Valve gets so much mileage out of one simple concept: you have a porta??l gun that you can use to open portals around the game world. You must use these portals to solve puzzles throughout each level, most of which are physics-?based. Luckily, these puzzles don't require pinpoint mouse precision, which is why this is perfect for chilled-out Steam Deck play.

11. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 had its troubles upon its 2020 release, disappointing almost everyone. In the years since, CD Projekt Red has remained committed to making it the best game it can be via countless patches and the sublime 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty.

At long last, Cyberpunk 2077 is (almost) everything it was hyped up to be, and it runs great on the Steam Deck. With engaging characters, powerful RPG choices, and the staggeringly beautiful open world of Night City, Cyberpunk 2077 is a game you can really sink your teeth into?? nowadays.

10. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

best Steam Deck games

If The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth isn't the best roguelike ever, then I don't know what is. Straight from the brain of Super Meat Boy developer Edmund McMillen, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth sees you fight through procedurally-generated dungeons aga??inst some of the most terrifyingly-designed monsters you'll ever s??ee in a video game.

As you progress, you collect items on each floor. This contributes to your build, but not every item complements one another. This means you're constantly making important choices about what to pick up and what to? leave behind. Each run is permadeath, resetting you right to the start if you die while progressing through the floors. Because of the randomized floors and items, it might be one of the most replayable games ever made.

9. Dave the Diver

best Steam Deck games

How many games do you know that can blend the action-adventure and restaurant simulator genres seamlessly? There's not many, let me tell you that much. Dave the Diver is one such title, and? it's undoubtedly one of the best games o?n the Steam Deck.

Dave the Diver is split into two gameplay sections. During the day, you dive into the sea, collecting ingredients from the ocean floor while fighting sealife with your harpoon gun. Later in the evening, you use these ingredients to run a sushi restaurant, improving its reputation through goo??d food and service. All of this is complemented by a gorgeous pixel art style, resulting in a game unlike anything you'll have played before.

8. Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4: Leon Kennedy at nighttime looking at rundown shack.
Image via Capcom/Steam.

2023's Resident Evil 4 might be the best remake in the series to da??te, and that's a high bar to clear. The game sees the return of Leon K??ennedy, who is tasked with rescuing the president's daughter, Ashley. You're faced with hordes of the undead throughout your adventure, which tops the 2005 original in just about every way.

Its graphics? Stunning. Its controls? Modern. The story? It has a tighter pacing this time around. And that's before we even get to the atmosphere, which is the real star of the show in the Resident Evil 4 remake. It's absolutely dripping with tension, which carries over even on the small screen of the St??eam Deck.

7. Skyrim

Skyrim: The Dragonborn casually walking through Riverwood.
Image via Bethesda/Steam.

13 years after its launch, and there's still nothing that quite evokes the same feelings as Skyrim. It's a classic RPG in every sense of the word, with one of the most detailed open worlds you'll ever explore, even after all this time. Interesting que?stlines and memorable characters are the tip of the iceberg in Bethesda's magnum opus.

On PC, Skyrim modding takes things to another level. Nexus Mods has almost 100,000 mods to download for the game, so the question is: can you mod Skyrim on Steam Deck? Yes! It's a bit more hassle, but it's certainly possible, meaning you can bring Skyrim up to modern standards on your handheld device.

6. RimWorld

A scene from Rimworld, once of the best Steam Deck video games.
Image via Ludeon Studios

Ludeon Studios' RimWorld is a far deeper game than it seems on the surface. At first glance, it appears to be just another construction and management simulator. Simply put, it isn't. RimWorld gives you numerous s??tarting scenarios, where you must attempt to survive and escape from a procedurally g?enerated planet.

To make every playthrough unique, it employs the use of an AI storyteller, which can make decisions on the fly to affect proceedings. You can choose from various storytellers, each of which will change its behavior based on various parameters. Want something intense? Go with Randy Random. Want a more traditional narrative? Cassandra Classic will make that happen. The third is Phoebe Chillax, which offers a more laid-back experience. It's this storyteller feature alone that elevates RimWorld above every other game in the genre.

5. God of War

A scene from God of War for the Steam Deck
Image via PlayStation

2018's God of War finally arrived on PC in 2022, breaking?? Santa Monica Studio's masterpiece free from its PS4 restraints. The game tells a powerful story between Kratos and his young son, Atreus, and their journey to spread?? the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, at the highest peak in Jötunheim.

Its hack-and-slash gameplay is similar to previous God of War games, yet the combat still manages to feel distinctly modern. That's an achievement in itself. Just everything, from the impeccable score from Bear McCreary to the awesome world design, comes together as a full package to make God of War one of the best Steam Deck games.

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Geralt in a pub with some people sat nearby on a table.

How will CD Projekt Red ever top The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? The culmination of an epic trilogy, this title is an extraordinary RPG, with impactful choices to be made even in the smallest of moments. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features some of the most well-written side-quests you'll ever see, as well as two fantastic expansions in Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

For a 2015 release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds up extremely well from both a visual and gameplay perspective. The combat still feels very fluid, which is why it remains one ?of the best Steam Deck games you can play after almost a dec??ade.

3. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley: a character stand by the train station as a steam train trundles through.
Image via ConcernedApe/Steam.

There's a reason life-simulation fans are still returning to Stardew Valley almost nine years after its release. ConcernedApe'??s game strips the formula back to basics but does everything it attempts just about per??fectly.

There's farming, fishing, building, mining, socializing, romancing, and even combat - it's a pretty simple life in Stardew Valley. If you enjoy life-simulators, there's a good chance you've already played this game. If you haven't, there's a good chance Stardew Valley will convert you to the genre.

2. Elden Ring

Elden Ring player character riding mount jumping in the air

Elden Ring is not for the impatient gamers out there. This open-world RPG by FromSoftware will test the limits of your patience, punishing you with sweet, sweet death over and over again. It's a classic Souls-like, defined by nigh-impossible bosses and frustratingly infrequent checkpoints, but with a bigger scale than anything the studio has ever attempted before. The satisfaction from victory in Elden Ring will have you jumping for joy.

Given that many would recommend Elden Ring with a controller anyway, I feel safe saying the game works great with the Steam Deck joysticks.? Go forth and explore the Lands Between from the comfort of your own couch.

1. Baldur's Gate 3

A scene of a town in Baldur's Gate 3, a great Steam Deck game.
Image via Larian Studios

Top spot was only ever going to Baldur's Gate 3. Larian's 2023 CRPG is an instant classic. With deep customization, fun combat, brilliant companions, and a gripping narrative, Baldur's Gate 3 is a game we'll all be playing for many years to come. I could wax further lyrical abo?ut its epic world, engaging quests, and a staggering level of freedom, but I reckon you get the picture.

Baldur's Gate 3 feels made for the Steam Deck in many ways. The turn-based combat lends itself well to the joystick controls, and the slow-paced gameplay in general makes it perfec??t for kicking back on the couch and playing at your own pace.

We've been dealt yet another radical, multiplying hand as a release date has been revealed for Balatro Mobile. The iOS and Android version of LocalThunk's widely-acclaimed poker roguelike launches via the App ??Store, Google Play, and Apple Arcade on September 26, 2024.

Watch as Jimbo ominou?sly introduces the new ports in the release date trailer:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7ZHIxRe66Q

Already a hit on portable platforms like Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck â€?as well as PC and all other major consoles â€?taking Balatro on the go just makes sense. Balatro Mobile has been further tweaked to sui??t its new platforms, including the addition of remastered controls for touchscreen devices.

Beyond that, the rest of Balatro Mobile appears to be exactly what it should be: Balatro. You've got an abundance of Jokers with special powers you can us?e with your decks, Campaign Mode and Challenge Mode, and the one-more-??run card-dealing madness that remains an utter delight.

If you're already well-versed in Balatro, or just want some further insight into where the whole thing came from, then boy, do I have a podcast for you. The excellent Eggplant: The Secret Lives of Games podcast had LocalThunk on back in April, and it's absolutely worth?? a listen, whether you're into the game itself ??or just love game dev chat.

Balatro was already a brutal time vampire, doing its best to magically whittle away h??ours before our very eyes. With the game even more accessible to everyone, all I can recommend is that you all go ahead and kiss your free time goodbye.

Much of Balatro's charm comes from how playing cards change with various buffs and peculiar jokers you can unlock as you discover new poker hands. With multiple collaborations ongoing between different games, you can take this charm a step further by making your playing cards look like The Witcher, Dave the Diver, or even Vampire Survivors characters.

How to turn on collab decks in Balatro

You can change the appearance of your Balatro deck by ?heading into Options, followed by Customize Deck. Here, you'll find categories for each suit, options for high-contrast colors, and arrows to pick between ??collaboration decks.

Balatro customize deck
Screenshot by Destructoid

You can find the same option in your pause menu?? if you're already mid-run and want to customize your deck. That way, you won't have to leave the game and potentially mess up your current round.

Currently, Balatro has collab decks with four other games:

  • The Witcher
  • Among Us
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Dave the Diver

Since they're split by suit, you can choose?? which card types to stay the same and which to swap out. In short, if you love one game but don't have an opinion on the others, you can have one or two enabled and keep the rest off.

Unlike decks you unlock through winning runs, using crossover ones won't impact your interest, hands, or discards in any way. T??hey're purely cosmetic, and you can think of them like skins for your decks. You can also use them on any deck type, so you're not limited to using specific ones to see the ?cards.

We're getting ever closer to Steam's big Summer Sale 2024. We're still a few weeks away, admittedly, but there are a couple m?ore events until then to keep us in the mood, and one of them is ongoing for the next few days.

Yesterday, Steam kicked off its Endless Replayability Fest, a sales event that celebrates those games that just seem to go on forever. But, you know, in a good way. Essentially, if it's something you can play over and over again without A) getting bored, or B) having the exact same experience as the first time, then it's p??robably here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=raIxJEFtgrA

We've got discounts on a bunch of games, with a few being teased in the above trailer, such as Don't Starve, Dead Cells, Mortal Sin, and Risk of Rain 2. As alwa?ys with these events, it goes on for a week, so this one will be ending Monday, May ??20 at 10am PT.

Endless fun (wait...did I say that already?)

You can see everything that's in the Endless Replayability Fest by visiting the Steam page. I'm seeing a few titles already that have grabbed my attention, including Stellaris, which recently experienced a boon in popularity thanks to its Machine Age DLC.

There's also Balatro, LocalThunk's "poker roguelike" that hit the scene back in February, and has been enjoying a decent amount of success these past few months. It's currently at "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam, so it must be doing something right.

There are also a couple of newer games that have been listed, including Hades 2 and Manor Lords, but these aren't discounted. They've just been included as part of the event. Personally, I've got my eye on Dwarf Fortress, which is 20%?? off at the moment. Always fancied getting?? lost in this simulation, because I've got nothing else going on.

This June marks the return of a summer speedrunning staple, as Summer Games Done Quick prepares to kick off another weeklong stream of incredible gaming feats. It all starts on June 30, and ahead of that the full list of games has been revealed.

There are a ton of classics being revisited this time around, and there's also the typical mix of new games getting their very first run in the spotlight. Chief among them is the PlayStation 5 version of Alan Wake 2. Speedrunner suavepeanut has an "Alan%" run â€?meaning just the Alan-centric Initiation chapters f??rom Remedy's celebrated sequel â€?planned, aiming for roughly an hour and some change.

Developer LocalThunk's poker roguelike Balatro is also in the mix for the first time as a Bonus Game. These games are typically inserted into the schedule after a specific fundraising incentive has been met. Folks who donate to the cause, which is once again humanitarian medical nonprofit Doctors Without Borders, can decide which goal they want to contribute toward. Keep that in mind if you're dying to see a "3 Deck Random Seed, Skipless" run of Balatro

While no one has tossed in the sprawling Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth into the mix yet, tapioca is cooking up a 90-minute any% run of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Happybythree will throw their hat into the heist-pulling ring with an Any% PlayStyle A run of Turnip Boy Robs a Bank. The week typically closes with a lengthy role-player, and this time it's the Nintendo Switch remake of Super Mario RPG from runner V0oid. There'??s no better way to bring the house down than to bring Smithy down LIVE.

Still goin' fast

If you're familiar with the Games Done Quick streams, you'll see plenty of familiar titles this time around, from a handful of Mega Man games Mega Man 4, Mega Man 9, and Mega Man X5, specifically to a Super Metroid race. There are welcome oddities in there, too. Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain will have TheShadedMaster going for 100% in roughly 15 minutes. There's also the Silly Games Done Quick block, which features the likes of Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, Barbie on NES, Birds Aren't Real: The Game, Mad Panic Coaster, and more.

Most importantly, there's a Chibi-Robo! race on the way, pitting Jaxler and Kobazzco against one another in the 1v1 Lockout Bingo category. It all goes down June 30 - July 6 at the Hilton Minneapolis Downtown in Minnesota, streaming live on Twitch and the official site. If you see my productivity dropping that week, you know what's up.???

While playing the poker roguelike Balatro, you may come across a mysterious blank voucher. The card’s description says it does nothing. Is this true, or does it actually do something? Here’s what the Blank Voucher really does in Balatro.

Buy the Blank Voucher ten times

The first time you buy the Blank Voucher, it will do nothing, just like it says in its description. Nothing will happen the next few times you buy the Blank Voucher, too. Keep being stubborn though, and on your tenth purchase, you will unlock the Antimatter Voucher.

The Vouchers that appear in your shop are random, and individual Vouchers can only appear once per run. This means that you might not get a Blank Voucher every run. If you try to unlock the Antimatter Voucher with normal gameplay, this can mean playing through way more than ten runs of Balatro

Screenshot by Destructoid

Antimatter Voucher

The Antimatter Voucher is unlocked by purchasing the Blank Voucher ten times. The Antimatter Voucher gives you one free Joker slot, with no drawbacks. This is an incredibly powerful effect, especially in t?he later stages of a run. An extra Joker can make or break a run by adding more score Mults or enabling you to play special hands.

There are actually three different ways to?? unlock the Antimatter Voucher:

  1. Keep playing more runs of Balatro. Continue playing normally and keep buying the Blank Voucher when you see it in your shop.
  2. When you see the Blank Voucher in your shop, buy it, and then exit to the main menu. Continue your run, and your shop should have the Blank Voucher and your money back. Repeat until the game registers that you’ve bought the Blank Voucher ten times.
  3. Unlock everything in your player profile. In the main menu, select your player profile in the bottom left and select “Unlock All.This will unlock the entire collection of cards for you, but it will also disable achievements for that profile.

Once you unlock the Antimatter Voucher, it has a chance of showing up in the shop during subsequent round?s. You need to buy the Bl??ank Voucher during a run for the Antimatter Voucher to appear during subsequent rounds in the same run. Like getting the Blank Voucher, the appearance of the Antimatter Voucher is also random, so you may need to play several runs before you find what you need.

Playstack, the publisher of popular roguelike deckbuilder Balatro confirmed on Twitter that the game has been temporarily removed from some digital storefronts due to a sudden rating change. Apparently, the UK rating board PEGI changed the rating from 3+ to 18+ overnight due to "prominent gambling imagery" which prompted the sudden delistings. The problem here is that there is literally no gambling in Balatro.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgrv9giaNO8

According to Playstack, they specifically addressed this topic with PEGI back in October after it was originally rated 18+. And, after some communication, PEGI changed the rating to 3+. PEGI even went as far as to assure Playstack that "we have reviewed your product and determined that the disclosure of gambling themes was unwarranted." Playstack says that the content in Balatro has not changed since that di??scourse took ??place, so it doesn't make much sense.

The solo developer of Balatro, LocalThunk, also res??ponded to the rating board issue.

"I do not condone gambling (staking something personally valuable on an uncertain event) nor do I believe that Balatro contains gambling. I did add risk/reward mechanics and RNG to Balatro, but these are core mec??hanics to the genre at large."

- LocalThunk, Solo Developer of Balatro

One platform not affected by this travesty is Steam, which does not carry any sort of age rati??ng based on rating boards.

I haven't had a chance to play just yet simply due to lack of free time at the moment, but our own Eric "The Cardmaster" Van Allen can attest that even a cursory five minutes in the world of Balatro makes it clear: this is not a game about gambling, whatsoever. This seems like a classic case of someone just glancing at a screenshot from Balatro and seeing that standard card decks are used, and there is a currency, and automatically ass??ociating it with gambling. Not a g??ood look, PEGI.

Balatro, which has no gambling mechanics whatsoever, is currently available on PC via Steam, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch depen?ding on your region.

I realized a long time ago I was probably never going to be good at poker. It's not that I'm bad at assessing risk; worse, I just don't care. When I used to play casual games in-between classes in school, I'd go all-in on bad hands. I'd swap cards for a flush that probably wouldn't show up. So imagine my surprise when Balatro, a de?ckbuilding poker roguelite, asked me t?o lean into those bad habits.

Developed by LocalThunk and published by Playstack, Balatro made a bit of a splash during the ??recent Steam Next Fest. So when people started talking it up in the full release on February 20, I had a feeling I should put this on what I call my "temperature check" radar: dip a toe in, play a few rounds, and see if the hype is real. So I booted it up, expecting a bit of card-counting fun.

Hours passed. I was still sitting there. I'd just lost a run to a bad discard, but I was so close; I'd made it to a high ante! Next one's a winner, for sure. To be clear, this is not a gambling game; no real money is being exchanged. Balatro's poker is all about scoring, where you play poker hands from a deck. It has as much in common with the likes of euchre or cribbage, in my eyes, as it does the game it draws its scori??ng rubric from.

Each? round, you can take on a blind and try t??o beat a score. Draw cards, then play the best poker hand you can. Score is determined by the numerical value of cards (chips) and the multiplier a combination offers. To make this simple for now, a pair won't get you many points, but a flush or a straight will see your score climb high.

What gets interesting is that the deck is highly? modifiable. You start with a basic deck of 52, with a normal allocation. Shops let you start to modify this, though. Some of these are simple: add a card, like a 5 of Clubs, to the deck, or make a card accrue more chips. But they can get weirder, oh so much weirder.

On an early run, I thought I was brilliant: what's better than four-of-a-kind? With four discards to play with, and enough hands, I could mill through cards until I got a four-of-a-kind and handily clear whatever number they put in front of me. It worked really well at first, and I climbed up through the Antes—tiers of progression, in Balatro terms—just milling through and dropping f??our??-of-a-kind.

But soon, t?he boss blinds started to throw wrenches at me. Some made all cards of a single suit not count, and another demanded I play five cards every time I tried to score a hand. The rule that did me in? One fewer card in-hand. That's it. A meager restriction, but when my entire plan was built around milling a deck, that probability meant a lot.

And that's why I brought up my penchant for bad risk assessment, because Balatro encourages the player to really try and optimize a deck for the most cheater-riffic poker hands you can make. I've tried to convert an entire fistful of cards into one suit; I've grabbed cards that can delete other ones, narrowing the possibility of what I can draw to only what I want to draw.

The allure of Balatro means I could always have a better deck, though. Keep a card marked with a blue seal in my hand at the end of the round, and it'll spawn a Planet, which will randomly upgrade the multipliers of the kinds of poker hands I can score. ??I've barely touched on the Jokers, which are wild cards with even wilder effects. My favorite would boost my multiplier every time I discarded cards of a certain suit; as someone who loves to mill through his deck looking for one card, it enabled those bad habits quite well.

All of this is presented in a throwback, almost pseudo-video poker presentation. I say this genuinely: I would play a Balatro machine. Granted, I know most games of chance are meant to part me from my hard-earned cash, and even in Balatro, the house wins more often than not.

Similar to how Dicey Dungeons expands the idea of dice-rolling games out into an entire roguelite, Balatro simply and effectively turns poker into an absolutely splendid deckbuilder. I might not be clever enough to take on poker pros at a table in Vegas, but I'd much rather lose hours of my impending weekend to Balatro.

You can find Balatro on Steam here.
