Talking Time!

1bitHeart is a visual novel that was originally released for free by a mysterious individual known as Miwashiba (aka ○□×). There isn’t much known about them outside of their work as an illustrator and game developer. Nobody knows who they are. Maybe we never will. All anyone can really judge them by is the body of work that they’ve presented, and that’s a little refreshing in this day and age. Their games Alicemare and LiEat have both garnered positive reviews on Steam, but I haven’t yet dived that far into their catalogue. The one game I have played, 1bitHeart, is surprisingly good though.

The story revolves around a boy named Nanashi who is basically just your average socially-inept, teenage shut-in who doesn’t even bother going to school anymore. He not only has trouble forming? relationships but keeping them as well. Then one day he goes to his room and finds an adorable, blue-haired, amnesiac woman who insists that he goes out into the world and make some damn friends. Seriously, that is pretty much the premise that starts everything. That is the one major overarching theme here. Don’t be a loser. Go make friends. It, against all odds, works pretty well too.

1bitHeart (PC)
Developer: △○□× (Miwashiba)
Publisher: AGM Playism
Released: August 28, 2017
MSRP: $2.99

One of the things that took me off guard at first was the, more or less, complete lack of fan service throughout the game. Considering that it starts off with a cute girl who remembers almost nothing lying in your bed, I was pleasantly surprised. Don’t get me wrong now. I love goofy, hornball humor, but it is nice to have something different every once in a while. The whole game ends up being a lot more adorable as a re??sult.

The vast majority of the cast are fairly disposable, but all the major players do a wonderful job of bringing you into the story. In fact, that’s probably my biggest gripe. It’s structured like a total rip-off of both the Danganronpa and later Persona series in that you are supposed to build relationships between chapters. These exchanges are, by far, the weakest part of the entire game. They’re already somewhat shallow encounters, but the only way to further these friendships is by purchasing items and gifting them to ?individuals. That eventually opens up dialogue into streamlined events that you have no real impact on whatsoever as a player. You’re just left hitting spacebar and reading text until you’re forced to cough up some more gifts in order to keep the conversation going. Like I said earlier, it’s a very shallow system that actually ends?? up detracting from the overall theme.

Luckily, the main story is pretty fucking cool. Basically, everyone exists within the realm of something known as The Master Program. Every character has a device called a Bitphone, which functions similarly to a modern-day smartphone, that’s strapped to the side of their head. The main conflict revolves around a group of hackers who are manipulating users’ Bitphones and attempting to alter The Master Program. Victims are left without any memories of what they've done during this time, and they're used to carry out various tasks to aid the villains in their nefarious plans. How can you stop all of this? Who cares? Yo??u should go out and make some friends and stop being such a loser! As much as I disliked the act of making the friends during my free time, I found it really difficult to not end up becoming endeared to the game’s commitment to the concept. Once again, it’s pretty adorable.

The biggest major gameplay element comes in a form taken straight from Danganronpa. During the main story, you’re forced into segments referred to as “Talking Time.” At the be??ginning, you’ll review all of your available clues. Then you are presented with three options at different points in a conversation: keep the conversation going, ask more about a particular topic, or “wait a? sec!” where you confront them about inaccuracies in their statements. If you answer incorrectly, you'll lose points off of your HP meter and restart from the last checkpoint during your interrogation. The whole system is incredibly forgiving though, and you’d be hard-pressed to actually see a game-over screen.

The artwork is minimal, but it works well within the context. Each area you unlock exhibits some new style that fits the characters who hang out there too. The soundtrack is, on the other hand, absolutely fucking phenomenal. There were exactly two songs that I wasn’t crazy about when I started the game, but I grew to love them over the course of my seven-hour playthrough. I’d even find myself humming them against my will wh??ile at work or out walking my dog.

In the end, 1bitHeart is a bit of a mixed bag. It does a whole lot really well, but there are definitely areas where it’s, undeniably, lacking. Considering the price of admission, however, it&r??squo;s difficult to not recommend it.

I loved my time spent in this goofy, sci-fi world. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a wonderful way to waste a few hours. If Miwashiba ever decides to grace us with any more ?of these delightfully odd little experiences in ??the future, you can bet your ass that I intend to play them.

[This review is based on a retail build of the game purchased by the reviewer.]

I bet you thought we forgot about you. For a whole pile of reasons (all of which can probably be blamed on me somehow) it has been a very, very long time since there has been an episode of Bit Transmission. We're sorry about that but w??e're excited to be back in the saddle with a brand new episode.

The bulk of the show is centered around the ??????????????????????????3DS, as each ??member of the cast was in a different state of 3DS ownership at the time of recording. We also talk about the earthquakes in Japan and how unfathomably thoughtless people can be, plus a brief roundup of cool iDevice games.

You can download the new episode below. You can also subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, Zune or RSS.

Time again for another episode of Bit Transmission. We actually have a full hour of content for you in this one, which may or may n?ot be a good thing.

What can you expect in our thirteenth step to the plate? I'm hooked on Recettear, Colette's obsession with Earth Defense Force is in full effect and Holmes is his typical, charming self. We also chat a bit about some of the games we saw at ??PAX and how conducive the show is to getting the word out about indie games.

You can download the episode a???t the link below, with show notes just a little further down from there.

What, exactly, do you think is goingon inside Jo?nathan Holmes' head up there? I invite you to speculate wildly on this.

It's time for another episode of Bit Transmission. We spend a considerable portion of the show talking about Catherine, the trailer and what we hope will come of all of this. But that's not all you get. There's also discussion of, shall we say, passionate review comments and a chat about the demo-like nature of Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. The day after I posted the Scott Pilgrim movie review, I attended a round-table interview with the film's director (Edgar Wright) and three of its stars (Michael Cera, Jason Schwartzman, ??and Anna Kendrick). They didn't let me bring a video camera in, so I could only capture audio of the event. Don't worry though, I still got you covere?d, at least where visuals are concerned. When it comes to questions, well, I only got one out before I became mortified to the point where I could no longer speak.

Don't let me spoil it for you though. Watch the video for yourself, and for those of you who've now seen the movie, tell me now; do you think that Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is the first true videogame film?

We talk a lot about Puzzle Quest 2 in this episode. That's about the only part of the conversation where I don't seem inexplicably angry. Later topics in the show include Metal Slug XX an?d a discussion about game series which have outlived themselves.

This video by Guncannon pleased us mightily. While there's certainly no animosity twixt Bit Transmission and the lovely Electric Hydra, I do rather like the idea of Topher ?Cantler as a supervillain and hope he pursues that career path.

3D Bit Hero

P-Dude dropped this lovely little number in our laps. We're definitely going to need a copy of the save file containing Jonathan Holmes in 3D Dot Heroes

Bit Winner

Last, but certainly not least, is this beautiful piece f?rom Manic Maverick. I was so taken aback by this that I still haven't found the words for it. How abou??t we just send you a prize and call it even?

Congratulations to Guncannon??, P-Dude and Manic Maverick! Send us an e-mail or PM me directly and we'll get your prize packs out to you.

AXE.

We're going to record an episode of Bit Transmission this weekend. I can confirm that we will be talking about Puzzle Quest 2 in some capacity. Also, I fully intend to force a discussion about sprite-based games getting "HD" visual upgrades, which should be no trouble at all. Should be a good show. If there's anything you'd like us to talk about, mention it in t??he comments below.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I also wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we're having a contest around our recently released Bit Transmission Sprite Pack #1. The Sprite Pack contains the sprites used to represent the cast (and some guests) in the header images which accompany each post. We want you to take ?those sprites and make all manner of new images with them.

To that end, we're giving away surprise bundles 'o fun for the three best (as determined by the cast) submissions you lot can muster. You only have until 11:59 pm on Friday, July 2nd to enter, so hurry! Check out the contest thread in the forums for compl??ete rules an?d to submit your entries. Good luck!

Ten episodes. That's how many ?it took for ?me to get one up late. The week after E3 was not the best time to attempt getting a show together. We've learned a valuable lesson today.

This is really short notice, I realize, but there was a little thing going on this week which drained a lot of our time and resources. Bit Transmission will be recording a new episode this weekend. It'll be our tenth, which mig?ht be perceived in some w??ay as a landmark. We'll be celebrating next week when the show releases, for certain.

But that's next week. Right now we have to focus on the present, which means having Edmund McMillen of Team Meat on the show. We??'ll discuss difficulty in games and probably refer to people as being "wussies" or something equally pejorative. And, yes, some of us will be unable to contain excitement over things announced at E3.

If you would like to see?? something addressed in the episode, or have a question for Edmund, put it in the comments below and we may very well satisfy your burning desires.

You may have noticed that we released the eighth episode of Bit Transmission only two days ago. The ??next episode isn't scheduled to drop into your eager laps until June 9th. Yet we're going to record this weekend? How can this be?

A few reasons, all of which have to do with me not being around to record the podcast on our usual days that week. So, we're doing it now. More important, it's a much-asked for discussion on the Shin Megami Tensei series. And who better to get on this show than Dtoid's resident J-RPG fanatic, Dale North? Probably some people, but none o??f them would have talked to us and we didn't ask them to.

Got something you're itching to have the gang dis??cuss? Put it in the comments below and perhaps it will be discussed.

It's that time again.

On this episode of the show, we're going to discuss videogames. Specifically, we'll spend some time talking about Fragile Dreams, a little Alan Wake and a few other spooky-type games we've been playing. There will also no doubt be some discussion on poorly naming games beca?use Jonathan seems hyped up about that for some reason.

Anything you think we should be addressing? Put it in the comments below and we m??ay just talk about it.

OK, it's a little late, but here's a sneak preview of last week's Bit Transmission with Alex Neuse from Gaijin Games. Alex was willing to divulge a lot of crazy stuff on the show, but my favorite bit was when he confirmed that my theory about the meaning of the Bit.Trip games was at least somewhat accurate. I've long thought that the Bit.Trip series depicts the formation of a human life, including the part with the sperm and the egg. Though Alex wouldn't tell me exactly when it happens, he did confirm that at one point or another, when you're looking at the Bit.Trip games, you're looking at sperm.

Looks like the Bit.Trip series and that weird in-vagina XBLA game may be the start of a new genre; the sex-education-in-ute??ro-action-thriller.

Other highlights from the show include confirmation that "Nether" and other aspects of previous Bit.Trip titles that are absent from Bit.Trip Runner will appear in future Bit.Trip games, a progress report on Bit.Trip 5, the current status of Anthony's lawsuit (and Gaijin's counter suit) over the Runner trademark, a tentative release date for the Tron-like Lilt Line, and more.

Finally, if you have Wario Ware D.I.Y. Showcase, and you haven't traded codes with the guys at Gaijin, you're missing out. They're giving out microgames that you can't get anywhere else. Sign up for free games here, and if you've got the guts, and check out the full podcast here.

Episode 7 of Bit Transmission is now available for your listening pleasure. Joining us for the show is Gaijin Games CEO, Alex Neuse. We talk about their highly epic Bit.Trip series, something Jonathan Holmes has worked up an extensive theory on. Plus some discussion on the trials and tribulations of being an independent developer and we touch briefly on the games as a??rt debate.

That's to??tally Commander Video up there. He is just so big and we are so small*.

The reason for this post is to alert you that we will be recording another episode of Bit Transmission. The event will transpire later this afternoon and will feature Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games. They do the Bit.Trip series of WiiWare tit?les, which I do sincerely ??hope you've played.

We're going to be talking a fair bit about Gaijin's next game, Bit.Trip Runner. Jonathan has this... theory ab??out the games whic??h will no doubt come up at some point. Lord only knows where we might go from there.

Perhaps you have something you'd like to know more abou?t? Maybe there's a topic of discussion you would like to hear addressed? Post them in the comments below!

*If you'd be so kind, please go back and read this sentence again but do it in the voice of Dr. Janosz Poha from Ghostbusters II because that's the voice I hear when I'm typing it and? I wouldn't want there to be any confusion.

Honestly, we should just call this episode, "The Jonathan Holmes Show" because that's really what it is. Listening to Holmes' passion for all things Capcom pretty much struck me dumb as he consistently managed to ask every question I cou??ld think of before I'd even really though??t about it. It's a good interview and will no doubt sate much of the lust for everyone's favorite Wii fan that we've been hearing about.

Lots of really great stuff in here. Marvel at how Capcom managed to go through all sorts of licensing issues to bring you a new fighting game (see what I did there?). And listen as bonus guest Topher Cantler repeatedly makes the case for Rival Schools.

Poor Seth Killian, In this week's Bit Transmission podcast (to be posted tomorrow), I mercilessly pummeled the guy with Marvel Vs Capcom 3 questions. I wanted to know everything about the game; how the game would play, how many characters would be in the final roster, how long the game's been in the works, and most importantly, when would I be playing it.

Seth did his best to answer my questions, and in doing so, he let me know that "there's a chance that the game will playable at E3." That's less than two months away. Score one for the videogame? journalists.

Hit the jump for a few of Mr Killian's choice responses to questions regarding the current state of Marvel Vs Capcom 3, and how it compares to its predecessors, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

On Marvel Vs Capcom 3's fighting engine, you could just sense that Seth wanted to tell us more t???han he was allowed to-

We'll be getting into one of the key things that makes Marvel (Vs Capcom) 3 totally different, or you know, a unique experience from Marvel (Vs Capcom) 2... I shouldn't say that it's (Marvel Vs Capcom 3) is totally different. Fans of Marvel (Vs Capcom) 2 are not going to be alienated by (Marvel Vs Capcom) 3.

After that he just sort of changed the subject. So yeah, he's forced to waffle a bit th?ere, but he's totally clear a?bout this next bit-

Yeah, I've played a lot of the game. Right now, there are about 30 characters (in Marvel Vs Capcom 3). I get upset because I keep hearing people say 'Oh, so there's 30 characters in the game?' Well, yes, but they're also going to keep adding characters until we're done with the game... There are 30 characters right now. They're not all done. They're at various stages. Som?e are pretty far along, some have a long way to go.

On how closely Marvel Vs Capcom 3 may end up resembling the Wii exclusive Tatsunoko Vs Capcom-

We're definitely not evacuating Tatsuonoko [Vs. Capcom]. They're quite different games. You're not going to have everything you liked about Tatsunoko Vs Capcom sucked out and put on another platform.

And finally, on the topic of Tatsunoko Vs Capcom's sales-

[Tatsunoko Vs Capcom] cer??tainly beat the initial expectations. It didn't set any land speed records, but it was a success. And that's really saying something considering th?at we're talking about a game that was not only never coming out, but has a title that most people can't even pronounce.

It's nice to hear a developer own up to the notion that when their games don't set any "land speed" sales records on the Wii, it's not necessarily the fault of the Wii and/or its audience. Games that start with the word Tatsunoko, ultra-violent, black-and-white beat 'em ups, FPSs with no online play; no matter how great these games may be, publishers should e??xpect them to sell in the millions, not on the Wii, not on any platform.

Notice how many games these days feature an inappropriate appearance from Dead Rising's Frank West? Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Lost Planet 2, probably Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Left 4 Dead 2... and that's all just in the past year. Though Frank may not be starring in Dead Rising 2, this forever-limping, wars-covering (y'know), penis-?nosed journalist with the zombi??e curse and a heart of gold is clearly here to stay.

While recording the latest episode of Dtoid's Bit Transmission podcast, Capcom's Seth Killian volunteered h??is insight on the mindset behind the Fran?k West overload of late.

For better or for worse, (Capcom?? of) Japan has understood that 'the West' likes Frank. So maybe that's why he's called Frank West? I don't know... Rightly or wrongly (Capcom of) Japan is convinced that Joe Six pack here in America love God d*mn Frank West. He will be making appearances in as many games as they can get him into.

Seth went on to (jokingly?) tease that Frank is sure to be in the next Puzzle Fighter, which caused dear Topher to immediately melt into a puddle of sweat and desire. Tune into the show tomorrow to hear for yourself. It's quite a treat, listening to the sound of ??a human being melting.

Street Fighter IV has been lauded as one of the best 2D fighters made in recent memory, but we could have seen a very different scenario play out. In our conversation with Seth Killian for the next episode of Bit Transmission, we received some insight into how the game managed to use 3D polygons while still retaining the accuracy players expect from a Street Fighter title.

When we first started out with Street Fighter IV [...] it was soft. It was lacking some of that pixel-perfect stuff that you want. But I just wanted to testify and say that you can actually get it done with 3D models. You just have to fudge it a bit. Which is, you don't actually have to use the models as the collision. You can do collision?? apart from the models. You can fudge it with the way collision works and use 2D collision systems even with 3D models.

Initially, it played wrong. That's all I can say. It didn't feel like a Street Fighter and the collision boxes were all mapped to the 3D models and that chang?ed. So, we pushed reboot in the middle and went back to the ??2D hit boxes. I think it's a lot of what preserved the Street Fighter feeling.

Makes perfect sense to me. If you want to preserve a feeling of ?a classic fighter, why not make use of the tools and techniques that create that feeling? It's always good to hear ??when developers don't abandon concepts in pursuit of the newfangled.

Make ??sure to come?? back on Wednesday to listen to our entire interview with Capcom's Seth Killian on episode six of Bit Transmission.

Mega Man has really run the gamut when it comes to the wide variety of games which have come out based on the franchise. Apparently, the well has not yet run dry, as Capcom is currently developing a Mega Man concept that could be an unexpected surprise??.

In the upcoming sixth episode of our Bit Transmission podcast, we asked Capcom's Seth Killian what might be next for t??he series. In response, he gave us a delightful tease, saying that the series still has, "some surprises in store for everybody."

It's good. I don't want to say nobody has seen it coming. Somebody may have seen it coming. But it excited me and when I heard about the project, I wa?s like, 'Holy crap. That's rad.' I actually haven't seen anyt??hing that's going on with the project right now but the idea was exciting.

This is still kicking around as a concept. But there are exciting ideas in the Mega Man space.

You'll be able to hear our complete interview with Seth when Bit Transmission releases on Wednesday. In the meantime, we demand your wild speculation. What could Capcom be up to with Mega Man?

Much to do, l??ittle time to accomplish it in. So, help us to focus our efforts. What would you like us to be asking about?

I let the produc?tion schedule get away from me on this episode and, for that, I sincerely apologize. Especially that header. Just not exciting enough for me, b?ut it's what we have to work with this week.

Speakin??g of this week, we talked about digital distribution systems, for the most part. There's also a segment where the gang talks about their favorite consoles from past generations and the current one.

And then there's a discussion about this thing. In that conversation, I say some words that are inappr??opriate even in impolite company. I hope that the context shows through and I'm not simply deemed offensive, because I do think that the? issue raised is an important one and I'd hate for people to misinterpret.

Anyway, here it is. Hope you enjoy it.

Wow. Four episodes. Why, it seems like only a couple of months ago when we debuted Bit Transmission. It's been a wild and crazy ride so far, that much is certain. ?My goodness, though! Four episo??des!

Actually, that's not really all that impressive now that I?? give it some serious thought. I suppose the only thing to do would be to record more shows, which is exactly what we intend to work on this weekend. We'll be talking about digital distribution systems, what they're like now and what we'd like them to be in future. We also have a whole bunch of other, smaller topics to discuss.

Real quick, I have to talk about that header image. I asked Holmes to see?? about making the portrait of Ashley Davis seen in the above dialog box. Of course, he's much smarter than I am and thought about actually asking her for it instead. Thirty minutes later, I have it in my inbox. That may not impress some of you, but it floored me.

This week?'s episode had some trials and tribulations associated with it. Between the ??PAX weekend and the Passover holiday going on, things were already going to be crazy. So, of course, this is the week where static electricity caused us to lose the entire episode while recording. There's no excuse for us sounding a little bored or tired -- if that's how you think we come off -- but it's at least a reason.

The show is all about Cave Story, really. We chatted a bit about WarioWare DIY and the 3DS, but almost all of this is devoted to Pixel's masterpiece. We hope you enjoy it. Show notes reside be??low the fo?ld.

??We're lucky to be recording at all, to be honest. Colette is traveling?? this weekend, so she was unavailable. And Jonathan, well, he has PAX East literally on his doorstep. I'm lucky he's even talking to me with all that action going down.

Filling the cavernous gap left by Colette's absence will be the endlessly delightful Ashley Davis. We could think of no person we'd rather have around to talk about Cave Story?. We'll probably also meander arou??nd the Nintendo 3DS announcement or some topic of Earth-shattering import.

Maybe you have something in mind for us to discuss? ??Put it? in the comments.

Who is that gorgeous, ripped figure standing there? I do believe it is none other than the effusive C??had Concelmo, which can mean only one thing: Someone is g?etting naked on this podcast.

Chad's with us to talk Mega Man 10, but that's not all you're going to hear in episode 3. Other topics include linearity in Final Fantasy, the brilliance of Deadly Premonition and ??we gi??ve some impressions on the recent news about Playstation Move.

If you haven't subscribed to Bit Transmission yet, you should do that via iTunes or standard RSS. Or, you could b??e less efficient with your time and download from the direct link below. Notes for this episode follow the jump.

Third time's the charm, so I'm told. So, if it doesn't work this time, we're just going to give up and torture you with deliberat??ions on polka. Don't make us go there.

This episode of Bit Transmission really is going to have a lot of discussion about Mega Man 10, but that's not all. Oh, no sir. We're also going to talk about other things. Really important things. And we might let Colette go on about Final Fantasy XIII&n?bsp;for a bit. Maybe. Or GDC stuff we didn't get to chec??k out for ourselves.

Okay, look, I spent a lot of time putting together that header image. Then I had a really good idea for it. Then I ran out of time to write this post. We'll get through this together. Ask questions, make comments, we'll include in the show. That's how ??this goes. Begin.

And pay no attention to the masked man.

Episode 2 of ???Bit Transmission is available for your perusal.

This one did not exactly go according to plan. Mostly because I'm an idiot and suggested that we should talk about a game the weekend before it releases, knowing full well t?hat our speculations on it wouldn't be available until two days after all doubt would have been laid to rest. That doesn't mean we didn't talk about it, just that it's not the conversation we'd had in mind.

That said, there are some highlights to this episode. We did, in fact, discuss Natal and responded to some of the great questions and comments that were sent in. Though uncredited in the episode itself, the entirety of the Mega Man 10 conte?nt in this episode was due to a co??nversation between Tascar and Tubatic. So, thanks for that.

Judge for yourself. Show notes reside after the jump. We're still not on iTunes -- not legitimately, at any rate -- but there is an RSS feed for the show at this link. You can e-mail us at "bits (at) bittransmission (dot) com" and you may want to follow us on Twitter (@bittransmission). Just saying.
