If you're looking for the Ice Axe in DayZ Frostline: Sakhal, simply finding it on the ground will be your best bet. So, where exactly does it spawn? To find out, we can take a look at the game's loot economy files on the game's official GitHub.

This reveals some interesting information. The Ice Axe spawns in anything marked as a town or village?? by the game, and there's a minimum of nine on the map at any given time. This means you'll need to head into your nearest town and get looting, as you won't just fi?nd the Ice Axe out in the wilderness!

With this i???nformation in mind, it's also worth mentioning that you can always loot the Ice Axe from another dead player, who you may or may not have killed.

Finding the Ice Axe in the Scientific Briefcase

If you're struggling to find the Ice Axe around Sakhal, it's 100% guaranteed to appear in a Scientific Briefcase. These briefcases have a random chance to appear next to dead scientists anywhere on the map but are locked by default. Because of the random nature of Scientific Briefcases, we wouldn't be counting on this to appear. Still, it's worth knowing about if you want to get the Ice Axe in DayZ Frostline: Sakhal.

How to use the Ice Axe in DayZ Frostline: Sakhal

So, you've got yourself an Ice Axe. What now? Strangely, DayZ Frostline doesn't add any new functionality to the weapon-tool hybrid, but it's as useful as?? ever. Equip it by dragging it from your inventory to your hotbar along t?he bottom of your screen, where you can use it for any of the following things:

• Opening cans, although it spills 20-40% of the food.
• Mining rocks to get Large Stones.
• Digging up worms from the ground to get fishing bait.
• Removing constraints from players.
• Attacking zombies and players as a melee weapon.
• Building Fences and Watchtowers.
• Dismantling player-built bases.
• Creating plots for fruits and vegetables.

Anyt?hing is possible in the future, so hopefully, Bohemia Interactive will give the Ice Axe more uses specific to Sakhal. An Ice Axe for an icy map -- it just ma?kes sense.

Bohemia Interactive revealed today that the second-ever expansion for DayZ, titled DayZ Frostline will be headed?? to Steam this fall. The frosty-themed expansion brings pla??yers to the icy Sakhal archipelago, a snowy landscape that offers both beauty and danger.

DayZ Frostline spans a map over 80 km2, featuring thick forests, frozen lakes, and a landscape blanketed in snow. Alongside the wintery terrain, Frostline also introduces new su??rvival mechanics requiring players to find warmth while managing their resources. Players will have to explore structures and landmarks to scavenge for supplies to survive while also uncovering the secrets of the archipelago.

Other new environmental hazards will threaten players as they try to create a life near warmer volcanic areas around the archipelago, which creates a unique challenge. Players familiar with the existing form of DayZ will also?? notice new diseases that must be dealt with as well as an enhanced fishing mechanic to assist with food supplies.

Noted at the FTC hearings

If you have a hankering for zombie action, it appears Bohemia Interactive's survival game DayZ will recieve a sequel. That reveal comes courtesy of documents seen during the recent court case between Micros?oft and th??e Federal Trade Commission.

According to a report from IGN, documents submitted as evidence during the hearings show that DayZ 2 is currently being worked on by Bohemia, along with Arma 4 and Arma Reforged. While details remain scarce, the slide does state that DayZ "remains one of ?the one of ??the most played PC console games to this day."

A Bohemia Interactive spokesperson told IGN that while the company is "expanding [its] focus regarding the possibilities of the DayZ game, brand, and team itself," it's not offering more details at this time. The spokespe??rson continued, saying there are numerous projects in development, and the publisher will make announcements "when & only after" it feels the time is right.

Dayz of our lives

Though it began as a modification for Arma 2 back in 2013, DayZ eventually turned into a standalone game. It challenges players to survive in a harsh European locale during the aftermath of a zombie infestation. To succeed, you must g?ather supplies (including food and water) while dealing with the undead that come at you.

Like any tough survival game, you have more than enemy NPCs to worry about. Other players are as keen to stay alive as you, even if that means ambushing other humans to steal supplies. It's a pretty unforgiving experience, one on par with other releases in the genre, such as Facepunch Studios' Rust.

DayZ's last update launched in May of 2023, so for now, it looks like the plan is to continue supporting the original game. Given that the document in question merely states that Dayz 2 is in development without additional details, we can only guess how far along development is. We'll certainly learn more if and when Bohemia Interactive officially announces DayZ 2.

Farewell to Arma

Bohemia Interactive has revealed a brand new title in its military shooter franchise, Arma. Now in Early Access on PC and Xbox Series X, Arma Reforger will serve as a "stepping stone" of sorts to the upcoming Arma 4, which is also cu?rrently in development at the Czech gaming studio.

Arma Reforger will serve two purposes for both the developer and the Arma community. Firstly, it will provide a standalone, open-world adventure with which to lay both the background, mood, and gameplay of the next mainline sequel. Secondly, it will all??ow players, modders, and the developer itself to get to grips with the all-?new Enfusion engine, which hopes to provide the series with its tightest, most immersive, and most thrilling experience to date.

Players will return to the mid-Atlantic island of Everon, which fans will recognize from Arma: Cold War Assault. Players can engage in epic multiplayer battles as Allied or Soviet forces, or use the Game Master mode to create their own unique scenarios, missions, and events �which can then be played out by invited parties or by your good self. Arma Reforger will offer up intense war-torn combat, complete with side obj?ectives, a heavy arsenal of weapons and vehic?les, and a variety of atmospheric battlefields.

An important part of the Arma universe, Bohemia Interactive hopes to ensure that community workshopping is better than ever before, with players creating all manner of custom content on both PC and Xbox platforms. Arma Reforger's Workshop and Workbench modes will provide players with the very too??ls used to make the game itself, giving fans the opportunity to get to grips with modding the series' powerful new Enfusion Engine. Of course, your content can then be shared with the community.

Arma Reforger looks to be a training ground of sorts for Arma 4, not just from a visual and gameplay stance but also from a technical and community-focused one. It's hardly a demo �Arma Reforger will contain enough content to be considered its own game �but it will allow both Bohemia Interactive and the pla?yerbase to get to grips wi??th the future of this expansive and tightly-held franchise.

Arma Reforger is currently in Early Access on PC (via Steam) and Xbox Series X, priced at around $30.

Epic Games Store has announced the next titles being offered up for its users absolutely free of charge �as of today, EGS users will be able to bag themselves the bloodthirsty multiplayer horror title Dead by Daylight and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, the esoteric and stylistic puzzler while True: learn(). while True: learn() is a quiet and unassuming puzzler developed by Luden.io and released on PC and consoles in 2019. Themed around the concept of artificial intelligence, the player sits at the desk of a brilliant scientist with an even-more-brilliant cat companion. The goal of this super-science duo is to create a cat-to-human translation device, solving all manner of complex logic puzzles, tricky number networks, and building algorithms in order to cross the ultimate line of communication. As you progress, you will be rewarded with money with which to further your experiments and reward your feline friend. Interestingly, while True: learn() also offers an insight into the genuine science of A.I.? systems. So there's a little education in there. Don't let that put you off!

Both Dead by Daylight and While True: learn() are claimable at the Epic Games Store until December 9, at which point next week's offerings, Godfall: Challenger Edition and Prison Architect, will tag in.

Genuinely, honest-to-goodness free

Arma studio Bohemia Interactive is cooking up a tactical five-on-five first-person shooter called Argo. In and of itself, that isn't unexpected or even all that noteworthy, but the fact that it's free-to-play without microtran?sations or "any other form of pay??ment to play the game" compels me to bring it up.

Here's a look at one of the three comp?etitive modes, Clash:

The extras sound nice, too. Combat Patrol mode "enables up to 10 players to team up and fight against AI in an open-world setting. Due to its randomized objectives and procedural generation of enemy forces, combined with Malden's 62 km² sandbox terrain, each session of Combat Patrol presents new challenges. To round out the package, Argo also includes a trimmed down version of the 3D Scenario Editor found in Arma 3, which makes it?? possible to create your own scenarios in just a few simple steps."

The game has been playable in prototype form under the "Project Argo" moniker since last year, and after a round of updates, it'll see a final release on June 22, 2017 through Steam and the Bohemia Store. It strikes me as a slightly easier way to get into the harsh world of Arma and its ilk.

While Argo is free, there will of course be ?an option to give a little somethin' back with the Argo Supporter's Pack. "As the development team's way of saying than??ks, the Supporter's Pack comes with a few special rewards: 14 exclusive animations for the MVP screen at the end of each match, a bundle of 22 unique apparel items, the ability to use vehicles in the 3D Scenario Editor, access to premium Argo Supporter servers, and the names of supporters will be highlighted on the leaderboards."

If you're aren't busy messing with Battlegrounds, this might be worth looking into next month.

We Bought a Tank

Arma and DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive has bought itself a a decommissioned T-72 main battle tank. While the developer is doing incredibly well with zombie survival game DayZ, it's mostly known for its hardcore war games like Arma.

"A massive tanks goes out to everyone who has supported the studio and its games throughout the past 16 yea?rs. Your enthusiasm and support have been astonishing," Bohemia stated in a press release. 

Bohemia just announced its current Arma 3 plans in a blog post.

They're being sold as DLC

I have a real love-hate relationship with April Fools' Day. I love the creativity on display, but hate that most of the cool things "announced" on that day are often just videos. Sometimes, the gags are real, and the results are terrific. Bohemia Interactive made a video featuring go karts in its military first-person shooter Arma 3 and now that stuff is real, playable DLC.

Arma 3 Karts is available now on Steam for $1.99, with a portion of? proceeds going to the Czech Red Cross. A fun add-on, to be sure, but t?here's plenty more serious content on the way too.

Players will want to read up on Bohemia's strategy for not segmenting the multiplayer community with paid content, as detailed in this blog post. Essentially, premium DLC can be experienced even if players don't "own" it, though there will be some restrictions in place as far as single-player scenarios go, and there are notifications. It's the studio's way of continuing to support Arma 3 and treat fans well given ?the "realit??ies of running a business and the costs of quality development."

No player info compromised

Rely on Horror spotted a thread on game hacking forum Unknown Che??ats which suggests user DevDomo gained access to developer Bohemia's servers. DevDomo's proof came in the form of some images which are alleged ?source code files and their method of getting into Bohemia's servers.

Bohemia confirmed it "detected an attack" on some of its servers and that "the precise nature and scope of this attack is currently being extensively investigated." No user data was compromised and development hasn't been affected, but this could result in more user hacks and exploits popping up in DayZ. As if ??people robbing and killing you legi??timately wasn't enough of a worry.

Look, I've come to terms with not trusting people in DayZ, but now you're telling me there are jerks doing bad things IRL? This is just too much.

'DayZ's development will continue to move full-steam ahead,' says studio

DayZ designer Dean Hall plans to leave Bohemia Interactive by the end of this year and return home to start his own studio in New Zealand, reports Eurogamer.

"I have a specific use," he said. "I'm really good at risk-taking and making other people take risks, I've always been good at that in my life ... But eventually, that's the bad person to have. Eventually, you don't want the guy telling you to go ove??r the top and get through. So at some point I'll be a disaster for the project, at least in a leaders??hip role."

For a game that's still far away from resembling anything close to complete, Hall's departure might be worrisome. Still, I'm happy we at least got a heads up. "I would extend my involvement here as long as Bohemia wanted -- needed -- me," he explained. "I have to be on the project as long as it's important to. Whether that role is as the leader, whether that ro??le is in a more creative sense... But at a certain point there will be diminishing returns."

As for his next project, Hall wants to make his so-called perfect multiplayer game. Speaking about possible game ideas, he said "A lot of them have similar DNA [to DayZ]."

Curate personalized experiences for other players

Taking a cue from Dungeons & Dragons, the free Zeus DLC planned for Arma 3 in Q2 2014 will give players the opportunity to become GMs across existing game modes and a new one called Zeus Game Master. It's here that they have the real freedom to dictate objectives, spawn units, and more. And since this is Arma, the Zeus system will be open to modders.

"The best thing about Arma 3 Zeus is how naturally it fits within the game," said design lead Karel Moricky. "Dynamic combat, massive islands, and editing features -- it was ??all there. But now we've added an interface which gives players full control over the multiplayer experience."

This DLC is something which sounds intriguing in the unexpected context of a game like Arma III but also slightly terrifying -- I'd surely stick with b??eing a mere pawn in the grand scheme of things. For a certain type of player, though, the role of GM will ??be a blast.

Free stuff is always welcome

Arma 3 came out a while ago, but without any single-player campaign. Bohemia Interactive decided to release the campaign after launch as free downloadable content. The first of the three planned campaign DLCs is out now, and it's already installed for you through the magic of Steam if you have Arma 3 installed.

The campaign story is filled with exciting military things like NATO, civil war, flashpoints, task forces, and a soldi??er named Ben Kerry. Even if the campaign doesn't sound exciti?ng to you, it adds more content to the multiplayer and mission creator tools.

The zombies might eat your brains soon

The Escapist has dug up a recently added entry to the Steam Database for the upcoming standalone version of DayZ. The entry just shows the name being added as "DayZ Early Access", and that's about it for right now. It's enough to make a good guess that we will in fact see the first-per??son zombie game come out soon as an Early Access game on Steam.

This isn't terribly surprising, but it does mean that a release is getting closer. Since it will be an Early Access game, we'll be able to shoot each other for cans of beans before the game is fully finished. I think this will work really well for DayZ since the original mod was built with a lot of community input. Makes sense that the standal?one versions would launc?h as a beta.

Three DLC episodes in all

Bohemia Interactive plans on releasing Arma III's campaign in three free episodic downloadable content releases. The first episode is called Survive, and will be released within a month of the main game's actual release. The following two episodes, Adapt and Win, will come out a few months later.

“This was not a decision we made lightly," project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land stated. "As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the del?ay. After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package – a splendid kick off for the Arma III experience.”

I feel like most fans of the Arma series are mainly interested in the multiplayer anyway. It's certainly a smarter decision doing it like this rather than pulling a Battlefield 3 with its horribly rushed campaign.

Also next gen fish AI, beating CoD: Ghosts to the punch

Arma 3 is officially in beta, with four new showcase missions, two new multiplayer missions, and a bunch of new vehicles -- helicopters, transport trucks, minisubs -- in tow. Full beta details follow after the break. The extra realistic military shooter/simulator is available through Steam and its own store. Purchases give you access to the?? present beta as well as the eventual full release.

My favorite addition over the alpha is the nighttime solo mission that tasks you with wreaking havoc and then slipping away, mostly because when I fail miserably I don't have to worry about the enemies seeing the look of em?barrassm?ent on my face.

I'm quite terrible at Arma 3, but I definitely appreciate the nods towards realism and higher stakes it carries. There's natural pacing in the running around and doing military things between actual engagements, chronicles by some amusingly stilted voice acting, and cowering behind a rock for ages is a welcomed strategy. Plus on one mission your squad mate keeps addressing a "Nichols," but it totally sounds like he's saying "pickles." I laughed?? every time. This is why I wasn't allowed in the military.

We could always use more of those

Bohemia Interactive, the developer behind the Arma series and the popular DayZ mod, have announced that they are working on a Mars Rover sim called Take On Mars. Players will be able drive around the surface of the red planet exploring and doing scien?tific missions.

The terrain will all be based on satellite images of Mars and built using the same Engine as Arma, so it's going to be crazy detailed. It will also have a destruction system so your Rover will break over time if you drive like an insane person. It will have full mod support, just like Arma, and players will be able to create and share their own missions. Ideally someone will cross this with DayZ and we?'ll? get to fight zombies on Mars.

Bohemia Interactive, the development studio behind Arma III and DayZ, will be hosting a couple of livestreams to showcase Arma III befo??re E3 2013. Both sess??ions will be taking place at 12PM Eastern on June 1 and June 8.

On June 1, mission designer Thomas Ryan and others from? the team will give a basic tutorial in scenario editing. On June 8, we'll get to see a playthrough of the brand new Combined Arms showcase mission.

Each stream will last around an hour, and fans will b?e able to ask the team questions via the Twitch chat room or through Twitter.

Hey look at that. Developer Bohemia Interactive worked with a fan to produce some player guides. It's like Bohemia actually cares about their players! Seriously, it's awesome to see a studio ??work so closely with their fans in order to allow everyone to have a fun experience. 

In this particular guide we get some tips on ?ho??w to be a good team player. Essentially, it breaks down to actually communicating with your allies. You can't just go around being a lone wolf, you need to work together here.

Developer has chatted with Sony

Over the past year especially, we've seen a significant amount of crossover between consoles and PC. It's been exciting to watch smaller console titles finally garner financial success after making the transition to Steam and the like, as well as hits like Minecraft and Terraria move from PC over to consoles for an even larger audience. It's entirely possible that DayZ Standalone could follow the latter path.

"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word 'f*ck up,' the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain," designer Dean Hall told The Escapist. "I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I don't think it necessarily has to hurt things."

Without getting too ahead of ourselves, I'll calmly point out that discussions about a port have been had externally. "It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to ??wait and see," said Hall. "We've talked and met with Sony, and they're very -- you know, they're obviously interested."
