Team Reptile has been hard at work on their latest title, a spiritual successor in gameplay and style to Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk's sleek cel-shaded, Dreamcast-esque graphics are just the start. Team Repti??le wants to bring the wh?ole shebang together with music from Hideki Naganuma, the man behind the original. Now, their latest trailer shows a whole lot of what's to come, and for more platforms.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was already locked in for Nintendo Switch and PC, but Team Reptile has confirmed it will also launch on Xbox and PlayStation, albeit a little later. Xbox and PlayStation owners will be able to check out the Jet Set successor on September 1, a few weeks after its A??ugust 18 release for PC and ??Switch.

The Latest Bomb Rush Cyberfunk Trailer

The trailer still keeps the?? mystery of what's going on i?n the game, as Team Reptile has been very tight-lipped about what Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is going to actually be about. However, the ??latest trailer teases a bit more. For one, much like it's spiritual predecessor, players will have the choice of choosing between multiple characters. There also styles including BMX, skating, and skateboarding.

We also get a look at some drone enemies, which may take the antagonistic role, like the T??okyo-to Police? in JSR. There's also a strange monochromatic environment. Although what it means is still up in the air.

Alongside all there, there are other gangs, antagonistic presences, and many other forces at work in the city. None of it's clear just yet, but we'll probably find? out more at launch. There's also another excellent track in the trailer, "Operator" by GRRL.

The truth will be reveal??ed when Bomb Rush Cyberfunk releases on September 1st for Playstation, Xbox, and PC, and August 18 for Nintendo Switch

A little look at what's new for indies this year

Nintendo aired a new Indi?e World Showcase today, spotlighting what's to come for? independent games on the Switch. Clocking in at roughly 20 minutes, it's a neat little look at what indies have in store amid the coming months.

Really, it was a strange show. The games shown were neat, but this showcase felt a little slim when it came to firm updates. Several projects popped up that we've known about, and a lot of windows we?re confirmed, but there was less in the way of hard dates.

Still, there were some surprises, as always. And even a few "out later today" appearances, which are always a highlight. I'll also just pre-emptively say this now: sorry Silksong sickos, but no news.

Without further ado, let's get into the recap.

Everything shown at the Nintendo Indie World Showcase for April 2023

  • The show kicks off with Mineko's Night Market, a charming shop sim with absolutely gorgeous graphics. I love the vibes here, and the minigames combined with running the stall make it seem like this could be a pleasant little slice-of-life game with some rural, spiritual vibes. That's out on September 26, 2023.

  • Farming and mining game My Time at Sandrock, the follow-up from the My Time at Portia team, is slated for a Switch port in summer 2023.
  • Chaotic co-op restaurant game Plate Up! is already a blast on PC, but Switch players will get to hop into the ever-evolving sim later this year. It's aiming to hit Nintendo Switch sometime in October 2023.
  • Quilts and Cats of Calico is adapted from real-life tabletop game Calico. It also simulates a very real reality of cats walking all over your tabletop games. Still, fans of feline friends and Clubhouse Games may find something to enjoy here. That arrives sometime in fall 2023.
  • Rift of the Necrodancer was a not-so-surprising hit from my time at PAX East 2023, and we got some looks at the different musical bouts and mechanics coming to the rhythm game sometime this year.

[caption id="attachment_341528" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Brace Yourself Games[/caption]

  • We're kicking off a DLC addition-specific section with A Little to the Left DLC coming in June. The premium DLC will add 25 new messes to the game, and it looks to be a little more tactile.
  • Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon gets the Puzzler's Pack DLC for free this spring, with some new characters and hats.
  • Cult of the Lamb ushers in the Relics of the Old Faith DLC on April 24. I played a little of this at PAX East, and it certainly offers more of what Cult of the Lamb does: creepy-cute animals and intense combat, with a hearty side of base-building.
  • YouTube's Dunkey arrives to introduce Animal Well, an indie project under his Bigmode publishing label that's aiming for early 2024. Even before the pickup, this curious puzzler was on my radar, so I'm looking forward to seeing what mysteries the final version holds.

[caption id="attachment_374416" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Nintendo / Shared Memory[/caption]

  • The surprise hit of the showcase for me is Crime O'Clock, a game that's a little hard to discern from gameplay alone. It seems like you travel through different areas and times, attempting to solve mysteries. Both the art style and general concept intrigue me, and I'm curious to see how it all comes together on June 30.
  • Both Teslagrad 2 and a remastered version of Teslagrad are out today, for those who want some immediate exploration in their lives.
  • Shadows Over Loathing has a digital version out today, with a physical version planned for the fall.
  • The dark and grim sequel Blasphemous 2 is looking to hack, slash, rip and tear this summer.

[caption id="attachment_374417" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Nintendo / The Game Kitchen[/caption]

  • Oxenfree II: Lost Signals resurfaces with a firm release date of July 12, 2023. Easily one of my most anticipated indie launches this year.
  • And now we're into the montage. The pretty game Paper Trail leads off with an August 2023 window.
  • The adorably named Little Kitty, Big City continues the virtual cat trend sometime in 2024.
  • I couldn't glean much from the trailer for Chants of Sennaar, but I was pretty intrigued by it. That's arriving on September 5.
  • The action-heavy Brotato will hit Switch sometime in 2023.
  • Escape Academy: The Complete Edition brings virtual escape rooms to the handheld system in fall 2023.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is available later today, for those who want their animatronic scares on the go.
  • Lastly, a surprise date for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk closes out the montage portion. Maybe I'm biased, as someone very much looking forward to Team Reptile's title, but this August 18 release date felt like it deserved more fanfare.

The stealthiest confirmation of the Indie World Showcase

The short but sweet Nintendo Indie World Showcase gave us a deeper look at a small selection of Indie titles. Titles like Rift of the NecroDancer and the Dunkey-published Animal Well were featured, but neither received specific release dates. This makes it incredibly humorous that one of the most anticipated Indie titles of the year did get a con?firmed release dateas part of the e??nding montage.

That’s right, if you kept your eyes glued to the end, you might have seen Bomb Rush Cyberfunk get a brief shoutout. Except instead of showing a “Q3release date, the launch was confirmed for August 18, 2023. I have absolutely zero idea why Bomb Rush Cyberfunk didn’t warrant a prominent feature during the Direct with this information. Everything shown looked good, but this is news, dang i??t. Confirmation t?hat we’ll get to play it this August is a big deal!

Making the situation even more humorous, Team Reptile uploaded a new trailer for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk following the Indie showcase. This would have been a perfectly exciting way to end the stream, but at least we have the foot??age now to enjoy.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAwGzZ-x3H0

Quibbles about the handling of the announcement aside, I'm glad to see a release date nailed down here. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk immediately turned heads with its Jet Set Radio influence, which we happen to like a lot around here. Considering the Indie in question already faced a delay, hard confirmation shows the game’s development is right on track. I can't wait to try this title, especially if the final product lives up to the footage we’ve seen.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk? ??will release on PC, Mac, Linux, and the Nintendo Switch.

The Jet Set successor needs more time to get it right

Team Reptile is taking a little more time on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The quest to paint the t??own, challenge crews, and more will now be aiming for summer 2023.

In a post to social media, the developer says it needs more time in order to realize its vision for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

"About the release: We are convinced that releasing the game this year will not take it to a level where we would be personally satisfied with. To create a fulfilling and unique game we are extending the development time of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to summer 2023."

But that's not the only bit of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk news this week. Team Reptile says it will be dumping "a lot more visuals" this we?ek, to sh?ow how the action-sports hybrid is shaping up.

Rise and grind

There's already been one drop today, highlighting the boostpacks players can use to do tricks. In the video example, Team Reptile shows off a Boost Trick, a 1080 spin. Landing this into a manual can keep the combo going, and comi?ng at it from higher ground and landi?ng in a manual boosts your speed.

While it's a bummer we won't be seeing Bomb Rush Cyberfunk this year after all, it's good that Team Reptile is taking its time. The Lethal League developer has impressed me with just about every showing of Cyberfunk so far.

It's got the right style, and it's got great moves across the different styles of traversal. While a Jet Set style game might go for skates, Team Reptile has also shown off skateboards and BMX bikes too. Tack on some fantastic music and ?purported battles for turf, and yeah, ?I'm keen to see Team Reptile fully realize their vision.

We'll see what the team has in store for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk next summer.

Go beyond rollerblading

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has been circling around on my radar for a while now. This stylish action sports game with serious Jet Set Radio vibes made a big splash with its debut, and its l?atest trailer just adds even more on top.

Lethal League developer Team Reptile debuted Bomb Rush Cyberfunk with the kind of activities you'd expect out of it: skating, dancing, and graffiti tagging. It all looks incredible, with action sports that look smooth as silk, a world and characters that pop off the screen, and all the features you'd want out of a ?game with graffiti and extreme sports.

So what does the latest trailer add? Two new ways to traverse the town.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-cE0PK9TeQ

Team Reptile's latest teaser shows off both skateboarding and BMX cycling, as two additional ways you can get around the city. In a message included with the trailer, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk game director Dion Koster says the game is a "big street culture symphony," ??building on that feeling of going to the local skatepark or hanging out at the mall.

Getting around in style will be im??portant, as Koster says that many secrets are found through points and combos done throughout th??e stage. And with a skateboard, BMX bike, inline skates, and your own two feet, there are a lot of ways to move in style.

I try to keep expectations in check for trailers and previews, but man, it's hard to deny that the trailer above has me really, really interested in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It really looks like Team Reptile is setting itself apart from the Jet Set Radio series, doing their own thing and building up a stylish world of turf wars and sick moves. It'll be one to watch for when it drops sometime this year. You can wishlist it on Steam here.
