Homecoming

After the massive legal battle between Vince Zampella and Jason West of Infinity Ward and Activision, a bunch of former Call of Duty developers left the company to form Respawn Entertainment. Their first new IP, a joint operation with EA, was the critically acclaimed Titanfall, which failed to even make a dent in Call of Duty's massive success. The sequel, Titanfall 2, failed even worse and was basi??cally sent ou??t to die by EA.

Now, though, it seems that a bunch of former developers from Infinity Ward are returning to the company. This is mostly coming from Reddit users digging around on LinkedIn to check resumes, but more than a few ex-Infinity Ward and Call of Duty devs are now back with the company. This exodus of talent seems to have started happening in mid-2017, before EA acquired Respawn for $455 million in November.

What this means for the future of Titanfall is uncertain. With most of the talent leaving Respawn and a Titanfall sequel already being confirmed, who's to say that EA's sequel will retain the same quality standards as before? Along with that, does this mean that the next Call of Duty will be more of a return to form than WW2 was? A ??lot of this is just ??speculation, but it raises a lot more questions than answers.

Doin' hand stuff

This weekend (and this weekend only), Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare players have the option of dropping the guns and raining down death through more unconventional means. Their hands are suddenly just as effect?ive as bullets.

With a new mode that's running from September 22 through September 25, Infinity Ward has introduced "Gesture Warfare" to Infinite Warfare multiplayer playlists. Through a randomly cycling rotation of gestures, players take aim and try to kill each other with hand movements. The trailer probably ??best demonstrates how it works. There's a lot of vaporizing unsuspecting enemies. It's part magical and part ridiculous.

A sliver of traditional Call of Duty combat remains, though. Infinity Ward has opted to retain throwing knives in Gesture Warfare. Th?e developer explains it's so "you'll still be able to be effective when you get caught in surprise combat situations." But everything else is about hand signals.

Gesture Warfare is quirky, different, and limited-time. Sounds like a nice and fun? change of ?pace for the regular players.

Mistress of the Dark is locked n' loaded

Whilst others wrestling with pubert??y chose Cindy Crawford or Claudia Schiffer, Elvira was the first girl I had a poster of on my wall. The flirt?atious horror-host has been a sharp, beloved and funny-as-hell scream queen for decades and is now set to make her first video game appearance since her '90s DOS adventures.

And the sardonic temptress will be making her return in, of all franchises, Call of Duty.

Next month sees the launch of Absolution, an expansion pack for Infinite Warfare. Alongside four new multiplayer maps, included for all your buddy-shooting enjoyment, Absolution features a new chapter for the popular 'Zombies'? mode.

Attack of the Radioactive Thing will see four players fight off legions of the undead in a kitsch '50s horror environment, reminiscent of the 'creature features' of the day. Our girl Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) will be on hand to guide players to safety, offering tips, side-quests, and encourage??ment in her trademark risque manner.

Infinite Warfare: Absolution will drop?? on PS4 on July 6. PC and Xbox releases a?re expected at a later date.

Unpleasant dreeeeams..

'Avengers' like universe

With how popular Call of Duty is among children, you'd think Activision would want to capitalize on that success with some films. If Michael Bay can repeat the same made up military nonsense for all of his movies, why not take the gaming equivalent and blow it up on the big screen? It looks like our nightmares are about to become real?, as Activision Blizzard Studios has announced that they have plans to expand the franchise beyond gaming.

Speaking with The Guardian, the co-presidents of Activision Blizzard (Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk) detailed that they would like to start their plan with a single film to gauge success. If that movie proves profitable, then follow-ups can be made. They "have plotted out many years" of Call of Duty films; I feel sick even typing this.

As Sher notes, "We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert oper?ations, while a public operation is going on."

Van Dyk adds, "It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope ... a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie." As the article notes, Van Dyk was one of the key players in Disney's acquisition of Marvel and Star Wars and helped push plans for future development of those fra?nchises forwa??rd, so he obviously knows what he is doing.

As with anything popular, there are inevitably copycats who will try to repeat it. Marvel found wild success with their "Cinematic Universe," so now most Hollywood studios are trying the same thing. More power to people who actually enjoy The Fast and the Furious, but I was never clamoring to have those films all linked together. I also don't care about Universal Monsters or any??thing DC Comics is doing.

I also don't know how Call of Duty can even work as a film. Sure, big budget spectacle is always a thing that is good for a laugh, but the reason interconnected universes work is because there is something to care about. People don't watch a Marvel film solely for the action (mostly because it sucks); they come to see the drama between Iron Man and Captain America and how it is impacting the characters they've grown to love. Call of Duty has none of that personal involvement.

If you're interested in reading more about this new Call of Duty film series, you can check out the interview on The Guardian. There is also talk of a TV series (like Marvel has with Netflix) and the overseas success of Warcraft's film adaptation.

Out April 18

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare continues its quest for wacky DLC, which is just as well, as the main game could have used some of the ??same char?m. Following a Kevin Smith-helmed riff on Jason and the camp counselor motif, the next add-on, Continuum, is going to '70s era New York to take on disco.

The zombie map is called "Shaolin Shuffle," and will continue the narrative of the original zombies cast as new characters. Yep, Paul Reubens, Seth Green, Ike Barinholtz, Jay Pharoah, and Sasheer Zamata return, this time joined by Pam Grier, who will fulfill the overlord role that The Hoff and Smith did previously. Naturally four maps will accompany the pack, including Excess, which is a remake of Rust from Modern Warfare 2 (the center setpiece cou?ld make for some fun skirmishes, but they're really reaching when it come??s to picking Infinity Ward-led maps to remake here).

It's set for an April 18 release on PS4, with PC and Xbox One t?o follow a month ?after.

Also 'Ghost' from Modern Warfare 2, if you care

Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare is going to be around for a while longer as Activision still has three more DLC packs to drop. In between those Season Pass offerings is a b?unch of other add-ons, including a set of voice packs that are dropping later today for both consoles, and at a later date on PC.

For $3.99 you can grab the Method Man announcer pack, which offers Wu-Tang inspired killstreak announcements among other vocal stylings. For those of you who really dug Modern Warfare 2 (I didn't) you can also get the "Ghost" voice pack, which, if ?you didn't ??remember (you probably don't) morphs the announcer into a "tough-talking British Soldier." Thankfully that one is free.

It's going to be hard to beat the Snoop Pack from Ghosts, but Method Man will try. Respect to Method, but I'd kill(ah) for a Ghost Fa??ce or RZA pack.

PC version only

If you're a broke gamer, such as myself, and want to try out the latest Call of Duty title, then this weekend on Steam will be your dream come true. From now until February 26 at 1 PM PST, the multiplayer portion of Infinite Warfare will be free with no level cap limita?tions. You'll be stuck to the base maps and won't have access to zombies mode, but you can go prestige if you're crazy enough.

Alongside this free weekend comes a sale on Steam. You can grab the base game for $29.99 (50% off), the Legacy edition for $53.59 (33% off and includes Modern Warfare Remastered), or the Digital Deluxe edition for $74.99 (25% off and includes the Season Pass along MWR)?. Oddly, the season pass itself i??s not on sale, so you're out of luck if you already own the game.

Anyone interested might as well queue up the download now as the gam??e sits at a pretty 50,600 MB. I guess we'll all convene after dinn??er, then?

The 90s can never die

I may not be a fan of his films as his nepotism resulted in Yoga Hosers, hands down the worst film of 2016, but I have always appreciated how big of a nerd Kevin Smith is. Along with fighting to direct episodes of shows he loves like The Flash and Supergirl, he also cameos in the dumbest things. Case in point, the new Sabotage DLC map pack for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Along with four new maps -- Noir, Neon, Renaissance, and Dominion, which is a remake of Modern Warfare 2's Afghan map -- Sabotage includes a new expansion to the zombie co-op mode, Rave in the Redwoods.

Set in the 90s and dripping in neon coolness, the new map includes the previously mentioned Smith cameo, the returning stars of Zombies in Spaceland (voiced by Seth Green, Sasheer Zamata, Jay Pharo??ah and Ike Barinholtz), and a new enemy named The Slasher. It's looking pretty damn neat.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's Sabotage DLC will release for Playstation 4 on January 31st, with an Xbox One and PC release to follow at a later date. It's included in the $50 USD season pass, but can also be purchased ??on its own for $15 USD.

For some, that's the only way they'll play it

If you didn't buy Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare yet, I understand. Not only did it come out shortly after the arguably superior Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, but it came out in the same year as Doom and Overwatch, two outstanding and obvious game-of-the-year contenders that you're probably still playing. Hell, if I played shooters, I'd much rather spend my time with something like Overwatch given Blizzard's tendency to support i??ts g?ames for years at a time.

If you haven't dropped a couple of Andrew Jacksons on Infinite Warfare yet??, Activision is letting you try is out for free this week. From December 15 through December 20, you'll have access to the campaign, online multiplayer, and zombies mode.

The free trial will be available for both Xbox One and PS4, and any progress you make in the game can be carried over if you decide to buy. The download for the trial is 60GB and Modern Warfare Remastered is not included.

Is this the untimely end of CoD?

According to a report from CNBC, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare sold fewer physical copies than its predecessor, Black Ops III. This news comes as little surprise, considering the tepid critical and fan reaction to Infinite Warfare.&?nbsp;Day-one impressions were primarily negative, with the conversation surrounding the game only getting worse since its release earlier last month.

Sales dropped almost 50% from last year, falling "17% shy of expectations," according to Doug Creutz, a gaming analyst from the Cowen Group. This was corroborated by a second, anonymous Wall Street source. "[According to the source,] November's NPD Call of Duty unit sales were down 51 year over year," writes CNBC's Tae Kim. Although this news comes from Amer?ican sales data, the UK also saw a 48% sales drop.

The report comes from the privately released November 2016 NPD sales data, which tracks sell-through information; not copies shipped to stores, but rather copies purchased by consumers. However, NPD data does not currently track digital sales, so it's possible that people are finally beginning to embrace the all-digital future. After all, brick-and-mortar retailers are struggling. But if Call of Duty was so white-hot on the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores, you can b??et Activision would've put that in a press release already.

The disappointing sales of Infinite Warfare, coupled with a drop in Activision stock, could motivate the company to give the series a break, à la Assassin's Creed. If next year's Call of Duty turns out to be really good, will that be enough to reverse the franchise's downward trend? I doubt it -- the most interesting part of this year's package was Modern Warfare Remastered, which probably doesn't bode well.

Activision did not return CNBC's reques??ts for comment, so I doubt they'll get back to us either. We'll ask anywa?y, though.

See ya later, WWE 2K17

Looks like GameStop has an abundance of stock on a game nobody really wants. Either that, or it really needs stock of better games, because a new trade offer can net you Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare for one dollar. This deal, which runs on November 22 and 23, also extends to the Legacy Edition, otherwise known?? as the version with a good game included, but that obviously raises the price a bit.

The offer is to trade a single game and get the standard edition of Infinite Warfare for one Washington. Not content to only sell the standard version, the offer also extends to the Legacy and Legacy Pro Editions. A single game and $21 will g??et you the Legacy Edition or $61 will get you the Legacy Pro Edition.

So if you really want to get Modern Warfare Remastered on the cheap before the end of 2016, this seems to be your best bet. I don't think many people are going to care about getting the season pass, so I doubt the Legacy Pro Edition will sell out. Then again, extra zombie maps for the base price of the game and Call of Duty 4 sounds decent.

Oddly, there is no mention of platform. I know this probably applies to both Xbox One and PS4, but I'd really like to get the PC version of Modern Warfare Remastered for $21. That would be super nice.

They're offering refunds

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare runs just fine on consoles, but PC users, specifically Windows 10 users, are having major issues with the game. Most notably, the Windows 10 edition doesn't work with the Steam version, leaving players with ghost town servers and no one to?? play with.

Fingers have been pointed in the direction of Activision, which includes a Micro??soft customer service rep, and multiple reports of refunds being granted. According to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson noted that "they support cross-play for partners who enable it," and that Activision opted to not provide that support.

This seems like a really odd move since Infinite Warfare isn't doing so hot on PC right now. If you'r?e interested, I'd strongly consider getting it on consoles.

Is this the end for Call of Duty?

That's right, Farming Simulator 17, a game about being a modern farmer and driving expensive tractors is currently destroying the just-released Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on Steam, at least numbers wise. According to Steam's own stats, Farming Simulator 17 is number 23 on the top 100 games list (at the time of writing) with 26,044 players today, while Infinite Warfare is number 36 with over 10,000 less at 15,436 players. Obviously not a terrible debut for most games, but pretty bad for one of the world's most popular series, a?t least on PC.

While some may rush to celebrate this being the death knell for CoD, there are a few potential reasons for this. For one, Farming Simulator has been out for nearly two weeks and costs $25 less. Infinite Warfare is also for sale on the Windows 10 Store, which can't play with the Steam version of the game for some reason.

Reviews for Farming Simulator 17 are "very positive" with over 1600 reviews on Steam, meanwhile CoD: IW is mixed with over 2500 reviews with ~1400 of them positive and ~1200 of them negative. Perhaps consumers are just starting to trust user reviews a bit more than critics at this point? I mean, CoD has a metacritic rating of 81 versus the 70 rating for Farming Simulator.  Or maybe people jumped ship for one of EA's arguably superior recent offerings of Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, both? of which were critically acclaimed. Hard to tell.

There have been complaints from PC players for some time saying that Call of Duty is catering to console gamers now, with features missing from recent iterations. Seems like CoD fans have finally followed through with their threats to boycott the series, unlike the last time they threatened that.

The only other thing I can think of is that farming is real?ly fucking fun. I mean, it is important enough to fuck up my sleep schedule twice a year with daylight savings time, so there must be something to it, right? (Jeditor's note: Fuck daylight savings time, farmers have lights on their tractors, it's doing them no favors.)

Personally? I'd rather be playing Owlboy again. It is so fucking good guys. So fucking good.

Haha, what?!

[Update: According to Microsoft, this problem falls entirely on Activision. Microsoft allows the possibility of cross-play with UWP apps and CD Projekt Red's upcoming GWENT even has the feature. I'm guessing Activision just wants the game on as many platforms as possible, though limiting such a crucial feature of Call of Duty makes li??t??tle sense. The original story is contained below.]

In some not so shocking news, the Windows Store version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will not support cross-play between the Steam (or retail) version of the game. This also affects Modern Warfare Remastered, which I'm surprised to learn is even hitt??ing the digital store.

I'm not sure what Microsoft's long term goals are for the Windows Store, but not allowing play between t??he same hardware is a bizarre choice. At the very least, since UWP is an Xbox platform, allow play between Xbox One and PC; that is also not supported, though (??the game is not an Xbox Play Anywhere title).

I feel sorry for anyone who decides to buy this version of the game. I doubt that performance will be poor (though past Call of Duty PC ports have been shoddy), but no one is going to be playing these versions. Getting to the top of the leaderboards should be a breeze for the five people who end up with these ??versions.

Infinity Ward is fairly finite these days

When something hits that zeitgeist nerve, it creates an "us versus them" mentality where participants who haven't even experienced something take sides. To avoid the stampede of rote "why [x government] is like Hogwarts or Westeros" think-pieces, people shut down and revolt against the mere idea of something -- hence, the mass dislikes of the inaugural trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Call of Duty 4 planted that seed, and annual iterations allowed that rancor to bloom. Hell, people were even angry at World at War redoing the whole World War II shtick, and it hit critical mass with Infinity Ward's Ghosts, which was arguably the worst Call of Duty yet.

I don't see Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare winning anyone over with its far-future tech and space battles, but it's a step up from Ghosts for sure.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4 [reviewed], Xbox One)
Developer: Infinity Ward
Publisher: Activision
Released: November 4, 2016
MSRP: $59.99

Whereas Battlefield 1 went back to basics this year and soared, Call of Duty attempts to push the envelope even more with its bombastic Hollywood approach to sci-f??i. You can probably tell where this is going.

Yep, Infinite tackles the concept of the fall of man with a galactic-scale conflict that escalates quickly, but signifies little by the time the credits roll. You'll move outside of the scope of the Earth into the final frontier of space, and slam into a near re-telling of your favorite Gundam story, with a faction beyond Earth that strays too far from the planet's principles, and becomes a non-nuanced "bad guy" (they're red so you know they're bad!). Their leader comes in the form of Kit Harrington (of Jon Snow fame), and like anything he does, including his comedic work, he's...sufficient. While he has a lot of room to improve and a long career ahead of him, nothing about his performance?? really excited me from start to finish.

That situation kind of sums up the average nature of the campaign. It's a series of tunnels again, but without Kevin Spacey, the newness of "the future" (that kind of wore off sometime around 2006 with Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter), or Treyarch's unsettling Jacob's Ladder-esque approach backing it. There's several cool instant foot-to-space-combat transitions and at least one low-key recreation of the No Russian mission that no one really cares about anymore, but those are fleeting, as the ground sequences comprise the typical Call of Duty feel of past games. It doesn't quite sell the future feel beyond what Black Ops III and Advanced Warfare have already done? outside of ?? giving you "more space," either.

Throwing an anti-gravity grenade or a spider seeking mine is only novel for so long, and gimmicks like that work far better within the context of multiplayer -- especially when a ton of different concepts are coming together at once. If you really dig Mass Effect and other sci-fi tales you'll probably be swayed, and the AI construct named Ethan who sounds kind of like a wisecracking Tommy Lee Jones did ??his part to sway me a tad as well. The Speciali??st (body-specific damage) or permadeath modes didn't entice me to play the campaign a second time though.

As mentioned, multiplayer is roughly on par with the past few [good] Call of Duty titles, and Infinity Ward was able to crawl out of the funk of Ghosts. There's 12 maps at launch, several of which play to Infinite's strengths like the indoor space station of Frontier, and others are impressive on a technical level (even if they lack ingenuity) like Precinct, a?? take on future Shibuya, Japan. The new "RIG" system is a good way to cement the halfsies class-based warfare Actvision has been toying with for a while, and creates more combinations beyond the "pick" loadouts that typically feature guns, equipment, perks, and killstreaks. I'm not big on the salvage crafting system, but you can ultimately ignore it as everything is there -- all eyes are on Inf??inity Ward to ensure that the "prototype" weapons (like one gun that has a tactical nuke killstreak attached to it) are balanced, but nothing stands out right now as it's early yet.

Now you can run around as a goofy Metal Gear Solid wolf-thing, shoot ricochet shots out of a giant claw gun, or walk around as a hulking menace with defensive shielding powers. It adds a layer to team play as you can complement each other's strengths and weaknesses nicely. While there isn't much in the way of new modes (Defender is essentially Oddball, the same mode you've played in Halo for over a decade), the old ones work just fine with the good map diversity ??and the aforementioned RIG?? mechanical mixup.

As is the case for many, Zombies in Spaceland is the main event and takes Infinite Warfare to a higher plane. It's one of the most fun themes yet, and the voice talents of David Hasselhoff, Paul Ruebens, Jay Pharoah, Seth Green, Sasheer Zamata, and Ike Barinholtz are perfectly cast. Ruebens' character Willard Wyler is basically the Call of Duty universe's John Waters, and the intro is straight out of a Saturday morning Hanna-??Barbera cartoon.

I love it, and not just from a "this was a thing when I was a kid!" type of way, mostly because it's the most justified zombies mode to date, sending players into an '80s film by way of a blood ritual. It's a great break from the crew we've seen since 2008's World at War, and I really hope Infinity Ward brings them back or introduces a new crew with each map pack (there's hope, as "select film" on the main menu hints that future levels will be themed ?around Wyler's creations).

It goes full crazy right away, with psychic powers, killer clowns, rollercoaster minigames, and David Hasselhoff playing himself. Secrets will be uncovered for weeks on end just like previous maps, but there's far more incentive to keep playing with card upgrades (read: special powers that you can customize) and weapon unlocks to earn over time. Plus, it's the most welcoming zombies to date with a comprehensive and interactive tutorial for solo play. Oh, and if you're playing on PS4, there's a PSVR bonus game that basically amounts to an arcadey 10-minute space shootout gallery. It wasn't live during my test session, but I was able to play it at th?e Call of Duty XP event.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare does just enough to stay above the curve and somewhat make up for the appropriately soulless Ghosts. The zombies team did an incredible job with Spaceland, and the multiplayer still ticks all of the right boxes with an ample locomotion system that has since been surpassed by Titanfall. But if you were expecting anything totally new, including the non-inventive space campaign, look elsewhere. Or, look directly to the inside of your slipcase and enter the code for Modern Warfare Remastered.

So it begins

It's just the beginning of November, but we're starting to see the sort of price slashing and product bundling that typically comes closer to Thanksgiving. A good example comes from Amazon i?n the form of a new piece of hardware and a new piece of software.

Amazon is offering a new PlayStation 4 Slim with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare for $299.99. There's an extra pack-in too, as the PS4 ships with a copy of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The PS4 Slim usually retails for $299.99 so this ostensibly means a free copy of Infinite Warfare.

There's a slightly more expensive version of this bundle too. For $319.99, it'll come with the Legacy Edition of Infinite Warfare instead of the standard one. That means that you get the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare remaster with it. That's a reasonable markup for those people who balk at the idea of spending $80 for the Legacy Edition and have no real interest in Infinite Warfare.

Fans with wads of cash

According to the Steam Store in the US, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's Deluxe Edition has been out selling Infinite Warfare's Sta??ndard Edition in the past few days (squarely at #4 while Standard was at #10). That's a $100 version of the game out??selling the $60 version.

The Deluxe Edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare includes the base game, Season Pass, and of course the infamous copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered.  The only two options to get Modern Warfare Remastered  is to either buy the $80 Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition, or the $100 Deluxe Edition, and sales charts are showing Delu?xe is on top (or was anyways till Steam Store murk things up a bit).

This means people are electing not only to get Modern Warfare Remastered, but also springing $20 more to get the Season Pass for Infinite Warfare. The Season Pass includes release day perk on November 4th such as 10 Rare Supply Drops and 1,000 bonus Salvage Credits to craft new prototy?pe weapons. Given the Season Pass is a $50 purchase separately, people are probably opting for the $30 "savings."

If you're debating on Deluxe vs Legacy, you can pick up up a copy with a more reasonable discount of 15% off at GMG for the PC Steam copy. This makes the Deluxe $84.??99 - essentially $5 more ??than list price of Legacy Edition.

Infinite Warfare Deluxe, Legacy, and Standard Steam Deals

Update: Legacy sold out, but you can still get an additional 6% off with code COD6

Note that the same 15% savings also applies to the Legacy and Standard Editions of Infinite Warfare, reducing both those prices as well. If you don't care about the Infinite Warfare Season Pass, buying Legacy for $68 is probably the better bet to also receive that copy of Modern Warfare Remastered.

Probably the latter, right?

The time has come -- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is arriving on November 4, just a few days away -- at which point we can finally either forget about it, or enjoy it depending on w??hat side of the fence you're on.

Of course some folks will probably refer to it as "the demo disc that comes with a copy of Modern Warfare Remastered," the actual crown jewel for a lot of old school fans who couldn't care less about the new direction the series is headed. This sentiment is nothing new, as I grew up with packed-in demo discs, most famously the Metal Gear Solid 2 disc that came with Zone of the Enders (which was actually good!).

But now that all of the facts are out on the table and the beta has passed, I want to know what version you're plunking down the cash for. If you loathe Call of Duty you can abstain, as we already had a poll for that!

Buy Modern Warfare Remastered, get 'free' Infinite Warfare

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare won't be making headlines this week compared to its Battlefield 1 competition releasing on Friday. That said, you may want to buy it soon as a new offer has cropped up at GMG. If you were looking to pick up the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition (you know, the edition where you get a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered plus a free copy of Infinite Warfare), there's a 15% drop to $67.99 on tap.

The deals were triggered by GMG's new semi-promoted No Tricks, Just Treats sale. Like an Easter egg hunt, you can look on its site for games with a pump?kin added to their image. Add said games to your cart and extra savings will be reflected magically. Hint: we've rounded up all the titles with extra savings, and they're all recent or upcoming releases that ar??e hard to find deals on.

No Tricks, Just Treats Promotion

Note: Must add game to cart to see discount.

Use coupon COD6 for 6% off Infinite Warfare.

We're not sure when this promotion ends, but with the Halloween theme going, it surely will end before the month is up. In fact it may possibly close sooner, as we've come to learn through the ??years, publishers love to clamp down on retailers offering promotions on their flagship titles before release. Those killjoys.

And five that don't

The Combat Rigs system is the way that Call of Duty 2016 introduces its most substantial multiplayer shake-up. Rather than a pool of players who are defined by their weapons loadout, these players are essentially separated into classes -- a divide that looks to be more nuanced than Call of Duty 2015's "Specialist" system.

And, one of those classes runs like an idiot puppy who hasn't quite yet learned how to move its legs in perfect rhythm. All its limbs flailing about awkwardly as the death machine steamrolls toward an opponent. The video makes it look like an skilled killer (at the 1:19 mark), but look at this screencap. Its leg is above its head and that seems anything but efficient. Awkward and efficient are usually mu?tually exclusive for a reason.

The rest of this video details the other five non-lumbering classes in Call of Duty 2016's multiplayer. The beta goes live this weekend for PS4 players, and three of the classes are available during that. You could either get to know those or watch some videos of humans running on all fours

Or both...probably both

"We like to keep it simple: Kill or be killed." That's how Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's comm?ander guy bluntly explains the battlezone fray, and, by extension, the game's multiplaye??r happenings.

This trailer for the upcoming multiplayer beta maybe couldn't have picked a better slogan. "Kill or be killed" is the way that many people play these games. Several of the modes have objectives, and those objectives are often summarily dismissed in favor of chasing a kill count. The only way that motto would be more accurate is if it were "kill and be killed," because the bulk of players see deaths at the same rapid clip that kills come? at.

The first look at Infinite Warfare's kill, die, respawn, kill multiplayer loop is only a few days away, hence the occasion for this trailer. The beta is halved with PlayStation 4 pre-orders getting exclusive access fro?m October 14 through October 17, and?? both PS4 and Xbox One players joining from October 21 through October 24. The beta will not be available on PC.

There's a bit of variety on display during the beta, ?too. Three maps, five? modes, and three of the game's six combat rigs will be available. Maybe it's the shake-up you crave for the killing you know. Bullets still fly and explosions still explode, but maybe it's kind of different now. Four days until we know for sure.

I don't need PlayStation VR

[Update: An Activision rep has further clarified that the combined space for both games is a "high-end estimate," which includes "day one updates as well as the Modern Warfare Remastered maps that are due before the end of the year. Their official FAQ has been updated with this information.]

Call of Duty fansite Charlie Intel has grabbed some pre-release box art from the French release of Infinite Warfare and noted the install size. For any purchases of the Legacy Edition, you're going to need at least 1/5th of the original PS4's hard drive space ava??ilable.

According to a short video uploaded to the site, Infinite Warfare comprises around 90 GB of that install size with Modern Warfare Remastered making up the other 40 GB. While I'm not too surprised at the install size, this is kind of?? troubling news for ?owners of older PS4 models.

While I'm not faulting Activision or Infinity Ward for this, I'm struggling to understand how publishers see an all digital market as t?he future. Physical media allows gamers to ha??ve a library of titles that can push the limits of storage capacity, but we're never going to get a hard drive that is unlimited.

Even if you have a one terabyte drive, Infinite Warfare is still taking up a tenth of the space available. We're going into the thi?rd year of these next-gen consoles, so so much space can really be left? Are we going to see next-gen consoles la?unch with a petabyte variation?

The Xbox One version wasn't mentioned, but I don't think installation sizes have drastically differed between the two consoles. If anythin?g, it would be a few less gigabytes due to Xbox One typically rendering games at a slightly lower resol??ution.

The next Call of Duty, YouTube dislikes and all, launch?es in November, but you'll be able to try it out for yourself soon enough.

For folks that have pre-ordered Infinite Warfare the PS4 beta starts on October 14 at 10AM PT. Beyond that both PS4 and Xbox O??ne players can get in on October 21, 10AM PT until October 24 at the same time. So in essence, PS4 players get a 10-day beta, and Xbox One players get three days.

The exact details for the session haven't come to light, but in all likelihood it's going to be the multiplayer build shown off at Call of Duty XP recently. The first zombies map is also basic??ally done, so that could make an appearance too.

PS4 users get it first

Last year, Activision announced that customers who pre-ordered Call of Duty: Black Ops III would be able to access the game's multiplayer beta, with PlayStation 4 users receiving first access. This trend is set to continue this year, as Activision has announced on the PlayStation Blog that beta access for the up-and-coming instalment in the Call of Duty franchise, Infinite Warfare, will be both a pre-order bonus and a timed exclusive for PlayS??tation 4 users.

There is currently no confirmation as to how long the beta period will last, only that it will run for at least three days, according to the official beta registration site. PlayStatio??n 4 users will be able to access it from October 14, with an Xbox One beta occurring at a later date. Activision has also confirmed that there will be no beta access for PC users.

In a way, this kind of feels like a missed opportunity. After all, Activision could have used free multiplayer beta access as a means to advertise their game, and to potentially placate Call of Duty fans who are dissatisfied with the route t??he franchise is taking. Although if you consider the popularity of the franchise in question, it's very likely that the "Infinite" in "Infinite Warfare" is actually a reference?? to the ga??me's sales predictions.

Activision also unveiled a new multiplayer trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which you can view below:

'It's entirely our project, but Treyarch is there if we need them'

Zombies in an Infinity Ward game? I was skepti??cal.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare had one of the worst reveals in recent history, but it's only gone up from there. People seemed to be jazzed about the unveiling of the multiplayer element yesterday at the XP event, and having played the new "Zombies in Spaceland" mode, I was pleasantly surprised.

I als?o got the chance to speak to Infinity Ward's lead zombie designer Lee Ross about what m??akes this subfranchise tick, and how much input Treyarch (the creator of zombies) has in their project.

The thing is, Infinity Ward has had some experience with zombies already (kinda) with Ghost's (great) Extinction mode -- it just subs out aliens instead of the walking dead. As it turns out Ross was actually the creator of that gametype, and used that bit of knowledge to lead into the revelation that they have a lot of autonomy? on their take on zombies. "This is all being done on our own," he said. "We certainly appreciate Treyarch's legacy and we can talk to them whenever we want, but we wanted to figure this out on our own terms."

From there I dived into a lot of the unique elements I noticed that backed up that claim, from the weird melees (a slap, a punch, breaking a beer bottle) to the actual zombie models themselves, and Ross was able to shed a little light on why they decided to go in a different direction. "This is entirely a community driven mode," he stated. "We didn't leave any idea off the table, and our core concept was 'how can we make this fun while still turning the idea of zombies on its head' and went from there. In the end, we were most inspired by films like Shaun of the Dead...media that took something as di??re like a zombie apocalypse but splice?d in more levity as well."

The one concept that the team kept coming back to was a theme park like Disneyland. They actually took multiple reference trips to parks, as well as haunted re??model variants last fall. Ross says they "knew they wanted to travel through time," and eventually settled on the 1980's because of how revolutionary it was. He states, "you know, you have such a rich cultural revolution going on. You have guys wearing makeup, you have the colorful clothing, pop culture movies that endure to this day. We had to be a part of th??at." That commitment to the period is exemplified in none other than David Hasselhoff, who will be playing a version of himself, trapped inside of the park and providing hints to the player while attempting to escape.

In case you were worried, Ross claims that there will be "more Easter eggs than ever" strewn about Zombies in Spaceland. I was able to find and assemble the challenge robot that periodically spits out new objectives to complete during my playthrough, but Ross also teased the return of Pack-a-Punch, a way to "reach a weapon's true potential," a token system with "souvenir" equipment rewards, and the ticketin??g mechanic that you can exchange for ultra weapons.

I also had a chance to express my disappointment with the fact that a similarly amazing cast was introduced in Black Ops III's initial zombie level, and was subsequently abandoned for the original World at War crew -- asking if this new Spaceland collective would suffer the sam??e fate. Ross only stated "the fans will have to dictate that." Well, I think I can read between the lines, but at the very least we'll have one awesome adventure in Spaceland come November.

'Zombies in Spaceland'

At the Cal??l of Duty XP event, one fixture stands out ??the most -- Zombies in Spaceland.

Not only does it house demo stations for the upcoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare minigame, but a full-on laser tag arena as ?well. It's almost like...Activision knows that its ?zombie mode is huge or something.

Since Actvision shut down any requests to capture footage for Zombies in Spaceland, you're going to have to deal with good old fashioned writeups for a little while outside of the reveal trailer above -- which you should totally watch for context. Done? Well, somehow this is even wackier than putting Jeff Goldblum into a Cthulhuian world, as David Hasselhoff and Paul Reubens serve as the hosts of sorts, with Seth Green, Ike Barinholtz, Jay Pharoah, and Asheer Zamata in the role of the four playable char?acters.

Spaceland is doubling down on the weirdness, starting up with a "Let's all go to the Lobby" cartoon playing during the ready-up screen and culminating in a ton of that classic esoteric Easter egg goodness that usually plagues the zombie mode these days. One thing that really stands out though is the atmosphere. The demonic theme was a pretty steadfast trope from World at War on, but this is the first time it truly feels different. It's not just the neon signs or the dialogue, but everything inside and out, ??from the soundtrack that plays songs like Run DMCs "King of Rock" to the new melee animations (including a punch or a slap instead of the knife), to the substituti??on of clowns instead of dogs as minibosses.

The addition of supers is fun too (initiated by pressing L1+R1 on PS4), as several of them impact your team directly, like a Team Fortress 2 style beam th?at protects players you're in close proximity too. They aren't?? just boring one-off abilities either, as they're tied directly into a deck of cards that you can mix and match, or pay cash in-game during a round to re-shuffle. I thankfully had time to play several matches, and managed to discover new things each time. One of the standout activities is the roller coaster, which you can embark upon with other teammates, shooting other targets and enemy zombies while riding.

I didn't really connect with any of the characters outside of Seth Green's over-the-top "geek" archetype (he's the one with the slap melee), but Paul Ruebens does an excellent job as the host (probably the best so far), and The Hoff, well, he's The Hoff, and plays some kicking tunes, so he's cool too. It's a minor complaint, but since the enemies were so much brighter (which is generally gre?at) I did have some issues identifying my teammates at times.

Don't get it twisted though -- Zombies in Spaceland is still zombies. Infinity Ward didn't exactly re-invent the wheel, they just took Treyarch's tires and fastened them on their own vehicle, but it works. There still ?seem to be a ton of secrets to find, and even with my roughly hour long play session (which consisted of several roun??ds on a timer for a special demo build) I was still locating new mechanics like basketball carnival games to play and tokens and tickets to turn in for new items.

I just really hope that Infinity Ward continues the adventures of this gang with future DLC, and doesn't go the route of Black Ops III, introducing an awesome new Hollywood cast and subsequently going back to the same World at War crew we've seen since 2008.

Sorry, 'Rig-based'

Overwatch was far from the first game to use the "class-based" setup, but it sure is popularizing it. With the advent of franchises like Quake and Gears of War&nb??sp;a??dopting it, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

As it turns out, Activision announced at the Call of Duty XP event this weekend that the upcoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare would be the next title to follow suit.

As "meh" as that sounds, I got the chance to play Infinite Warfare's multiplayer for the first time ever, and I have to say, it's good thing. You see Black Ops III already had classes to a degree and they worked fine, but Infinite is going all out on them in a new way.

Now you have "Rigs," which basically amount to suits that each character can wear to augment their abilities. Playable Rigs include: the Phantom (sniper, pins enemies to wall with Ballista EM3, armored shield on back), the Synaptic (run and gun, can squat into all fours and melee like Crying Wolf from Metal Gear Solid IV),?????????????????????????? the Warfighter (mid-range standard archetype, sports a r??icochet shot, persistent score streaks), the Stryker (area denial, micro turret, drone that takes a grenade), the FTL (experimental, hit and run, edges of HUD show enemies), and the Merc (defense-oriented, infusion health restoration trait). You can get a better look at several of them in the gallery below.

Whereas the classes from Black Ops III mostly centered around their supers, the Infinite ones have multiple "Payloads" (read: abilities) they can take, which either retread on previous supers from the last game (like limited-use weapons), provide something new entirely (like the Synaptic), or completely change your playstyle in general, providing general statistical enhancements. There are also four "Mission Teams" this time around that the player can choose from to get new themed challenges with their own unique cosmetic rewards. In sho?rt, it's a way for hardcore people to get more mileage than just Prestige-ing over and over.

In my games I gravitated towards the Warfighter, the "standard" baseline character who has a gun that can shoot around corners with ricochet shots, and a perk that lets you keep scorestreaks beyond death. That's on top of the "pick 10" system, which has returned, and allows players to customize their main weapon, sidearm, attachments, perks, and equipment as usual. Since you can swap Rigs mid-fight, you're going to see a lot of different styles being played at any given time. This is where Infinite Warfare feels t??he most?? familiar, but the team did manage to mix things up quite a bit with the equipment.

Because they're able to commit to the far future setting more than ever before, some of the weapons are wacky. There's an assault rifle that you can rip in two (almost instantly) by holding the switch weapon button that morphs into two akimbo rifles for close-range combat. There's a giant focused laser blast gun that serves as an alternative to the rocket launcher. In fact the energy-based weapons are a whole new subclass in Infinite, with a battery system? that re?charges over time as opposed to a traditional "clip" ammo mechanic.

The maps are a tad sillier too (which is good), and Activision showcased some of the more unique ones like a zero-gravity space station, maps that take place on a planet's moon, and even a "traditional" feeling map called "Throwback" that recreates old Earth buildings on a giant rotating ring, Halo style. I have a feeling t?hat the DLC is going to be even weirder, and I'm looking for??ward to it.

There is a dark side though, in the "Salvage" system. Described carefully in a way that doesn't explicitly scream "microtransactions" but hints at them, salvage is a new mechanic that allows players to craft their own weapons. While innocent in theory, topics were touched upon like a gun that has a built-in 25-kill tactical nuke ability (read: something that instantly wins a match, but is tough to do -- this one got a big reaction from the keynote presentation crowd), or a gun that has a blade that instantly kills folks with its melee attack. These are referred to as legendaries, and it looks like Activision is trying to add in an element of Destiny to keep people engaged. I didn't get a chance to see? this system up close so I can't comment on it, but I'm definitely going to be keeping a??n eye on it near launch.

Other than the whole idea of Salvage, I'm pretty pleasantly surprised by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. I don't think it breaks the mold quite as much as some past games, but the Rig concept is better than anything Infinity Ward did with Ghosts. Everything is better than Ghosts so far, actually, and a lot of that is owed to the fact that Infinite borrows so much from Black Ops III, from its class system to its wall-running and jetpacks (which were in turn borrowed from Advanced Warfighter).

You c?an get ?a look at a full match I played in the above video if you want to see more.

Just like Modern Warfare or Black Ops

Through the years, Call of Duty has had plenty of titles that have served different roles. Some, like the Modern Warfare and Black Ops games, are individual installments in a sub-series of the Call of Duty franchise. Others, like World at War and Ghosts, are just one-offs that fill the gaps from year to year. If Infinity Ward's forecast is correct, Infinite Warfare will firmly be in the former group.

Speaking with Polygon, narrative director Taylor Kurosaki says that the developer see Infinite Warfare as the start of a new sub-series. "We want to establish our own new sub-franchise, our own new branch of the Call of Duty tree. What we are developing here could c?ertainly support multiple games. We're trying to develop a very rich wo??rld that we're not even close to exhausting," he said.

Kurosaki also commented "Everyone was interested in this setting. It afforded us a lot to do from ?a gameplay perspective. The setting was something we?? as a team were all united behind. Brian and I and Jacob Minkoff --  the design director at Infinity Ward -- the three of us set about looking to tell a classic story set against this more futuristic backdrop."

He's right. Space is an interesting setting for this kind of game, but it's also a huge tonal shift for what players are used to -- and it's already not sitting well with a lot of people. Kurosaki equates this to the change between Call of Duty 3 and the first Modern Warfare. "I'm sure that the Infinity Ward team felt the same kind of tremendous burden when they went from World War II to modern warfare. It's an entire world with new weapons, vehicles, AI, unde?r-the-hood stuff. We're doing the exact same stuff here. This is as much of a sea change," he explained.

Infinite Warfare might be the beginning of a new sub-series in Call of Duty, but it's going to have to prove itself right off the bat. If this is received as poorly as the reveal trailer was (and, most importantly, if it fails to hit s?ales projections), Activision might very well reverse course. It needs to make a splash or else the studio might not ever get the chance to explore this rich world that Kurosaki envisions.

Relax

Back in May, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's reveal was met with an outcry of disapproval as militant fans waged a war to click the dislike button on YouTube as many times as?? possible. (It's currently the second-most disliked video in YouTube history -- a significant feat considering how many Justin Beiber songs exist.)

Call of Duty's take on Zombies looks set to be more well-received than Infinite Warfare proper. Zombies mode won't take the game to space, it'll just take it to Spaceland. Preserving the futuristic bent but turning the clock back a bit, this version of Zombies is se?t in a space-themed amusement park in? the '80s. The trailer's entertaining, which is mostly all that you can ask for at this point.

The cast plays strongly into '80s ?archetypes, as it features a jock, a nerd, a valley girl, and a rapper. Seth Green, Ike Barinholtz, Jay Pharoah, and Sasheer Zamata vo?ice the characters. Also, David Hasselhoff plays the theme park DJ. Can't ever have too much Hoff.

E??njoy having Frankie Goes to Hollywood stuck in?? your head for the rest of the day.

At least it's not Nuketown again

I like Nuketown well enough, but if it was going to be yet another pre-order bonus outside of Treyarch's line of Call of Duty games somehow, I'd be pretty pissed. Nope, it's a Terminal remake from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- you know, the one that mirrored the campaign missio?n that wa??s mired in controversy? That one.

Any pre-orders across all plaforms and editions of Infinite Warfare will nab the map, and this time...it's on the moon (cue wacky phrases)!. In all seriousness it was a pretty good arena, and the new mock-up above (which isn't in-game) looks great. If you still aren't in, you can watch the "???Black Sky" campaign mission below.

I was never big on Infinity Ward outside of Call of Duty 4, but this looks way better than Ghosts.
