The Eve Online Doctor Who collab starts on January 13

Developer CCP is no stranger to Eve Online events, but this one is going to turn some heads. The Eve Online Doctor Who crossover starts this month on January 13.

Referred to as the "Interstellar Convergence," you'll square off against Daleks and explore space for Time War items. Here's an official rundown of the event, and what it'll actu??ally entail:

"EVE Online x Doctor Who introduces new, Gallifrey-themed space where pl?ayers will search for artifacts from Doctor Who’s Great Time War. The artifacts will provide players with clues to track down the infamous Daleks and face them in an interstellar battle of the ages. Players who survive the fight will reap unique rewards that they can tak??e back to New Eden. Additionally, a login campaign with skill points and Doctor Who-themed items will be available to all players throughout the duration of the event."

It's not going to run for a long time, either! Once it kicks off on January 13, it'll actually leave the game on February 1. And in true MMO fashion, unless CCP decides to bring it back, it's gone. You can check out the trailer for the event here.

Perhaps this is a start of the true power and money now-parent-company Pearl Abyss brings to the table? As a reminder, the plan is to return to an in-person EVE Online Fanfest in the heart of Iceland this year, so it's going to be a big 2022 for CCP.

EVE Academy has been in beta for a bit

EVE Online is incredibly daunting. So much so that over the years I've heard countless tales of people quitting because of how overwhelming it is. No one expects the amount of math and dedication EVE requires, after all! Enter EVE Academy.

Announced today at the PC Gaming Show, EVE Academy will be fully rolled out today, beyond the beta version that players could see for t?he past several weeks. Here's the gist of what CCP hopes to achieve with the system

  • Get Started: With information on character creation, the onboard AI “Auraâ€? and the available career paths.
  • Find a Path: Outlines four distinct career paths, each offering a different experience for Capsuleers.
  • Jump into Activities: Whether pilots are looking to get involved in the massive player-vs-player battles, explore New Eden’s 8,000 solar systems, build an industrial corporation, or join one of the NPC empires; Capsuleers have a place to start their journey across the stars.
  • Set Goals and Aspirations: A variety of achievable goals to those who are looking for guidance. With EVE Academy, players of all skill levels can explore new paths and quickly master the game’s intricate systems.

CCP has been focused on EVE Online's NPE (new player experience) for many, many years. This is just another way the team is aiming to really bring in new players rather than focus entirely on veteran retention. CCP Creative director Bergur Finnbogason had this to say about the change: "It’s no secret that EVE Online is a complex game, and its unmatched freedom has a lot to offer players who are hungry for adventure. We’ve learned that players who have goals they want to accomplish in EVE Online get more enjoyment out of the game. Everyone has to start somewhere???, and EVE Academy gives us an opportunity to help new Capsuleers learn the ropes and set their own goals."

What's next? The players will decide

One of the most enduring aspects of EVE Online is just how impactful the playerbase is on the day-to-day goings-on of the game. Although developer CCP Games guides players along it's ultimately up to them to shape the future of the world; whether it's through meta analysis or plain ?old brute force.

So far, the Triglavian Invasion (read: a mysterious new force with wicked technology that players can steal) storyline has been one of the more riveting recent arcs for the game, purely from a narrative perspective. When it was revealed in mid-2018 fans reacted wi??th a roaring applause at the Harpa centre in Reykjavík, Iceland, but all MMO storylines must come to ??an end.

As revealed today by a cryptic and persona-filled video log, CCP plans to sunset the Triglavian influence with an upcoming "final" chapter. Once again player choice is at the forefront, as CCP intends to let players side with the Triglavian Collective or remain loyal to EDENCOM (in high and low sec). While the Triglavian storyline will play out for some time, EVE is getting its Forsaken Fortress update (which focuses on player-built structures?) on May 26: which should lead to some organic story shenanigans.

In terms of future plans for growth following their wholesale shift out of VR and into the arms of Pearl Abyss, their new owners, wide-eyed CCP CEO Hilmar V. Pétursson says he has a plan. He reminds us that EVE is 17 years old this year, and just recently relaunched in China and got a Korean localization. The future of EVE is looking bri??ght, a?nd with a new daddy at the helm and a single focus on what made the franchise so appealing in the first place, CCP can continue to stay the course.

Naturally, they'll always have their side projects: it just wouldn't be CCP without 'em.

After it was already on hiatus last year

As studios pull out of PAX East and GDC left and right, one fur?ther-out industry event has now been canc??eled due to coronavirus concerns: EVE Fanfest.

Held in Iceland nearly every year for nearly a decade, CCP's EVE Online celebration has officially given notice that the event that was scheduled to run from April 2-4 will no longer happen: "In light of the ongoing global developments regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic and increasing health concerns, it is with a heavy heart that we have made the decision to cancel EVE? Fanfest."

With CCP Shangha?i becoming a large part of CCP's operations in recent years, and with their parent company, Pearl Abyss, stationed in South Korea, this move makes a whole lot of sense. A lot of k?ey players outside of the home team in Iceland wouldn't be able to make it, amid the standard health concerns that a large gathering like Fanfest would bring.

Even so, this is a bold move for the company, as CCP opted to skip EVE Fanfest last year in favor of several smaller gatherings spread out across the globe. 2020 was supposed to be a huge coming home party for the company: but fans will have to settle for the new 2020 venues in Europe and North America.

And starts a new one

Try as it may, it seems as though EVE Online developer CCP cannot get a first-person shooter to stick. In 2016, it canceled PS3-exclusive Dust 514 after an underwhelming run. Later, it canned Project Legion before it left the prototyping phase.

Add another one to the pile. Four years after being announced (but before it ever actually launched), CCP has shut down class-based shooter Project Nova. This attempt at an EVE Online FPS was set in the popular space MMOs world but didn't share a synchronous world the way Dust 514 did. CCP parent company Pearl Abyss confirmed the cancellation of Project Nova in an earnings call over the weekend.

In true EVE shooter fashion, something new is rising from the ashes of Project Nova. CCP's London studio is now dedicated entirely to developing a new multiplayer shooter that uses Project Nova's framework. CCP head of PR George Kellion said "It is very common for games in active development to evolve over time, often substantially. We remain committed to offering a rock-solid, action-oriented gameplay experience with stellar visuals, but due to significant changes in the scope and direction of our sci-fi multiplayer shooter game concept, it also made sense to update how we refer to this project internally. So, we are no longer using the codename Project Nova for this game concept."

Understandably, CCP isn't going to be ready to formally unveil this new project for a long time. And who knows if it'll ever actually come to fruition. With EVE Online shooters, we're in "fo??ol me once..." territory, and then you have to count on a bunch of fingers.

Starting from square one

There's a reason you've seen so many EVE Online stories this past decade and change: the entire game is player-driven. If a war starts?? and someone loses items that amount to scores of time and money, that? matters. If players are literally too afraid to enter certain areas for fear of PVP, that changes the entire scope of the game.

All of that is colored by EVE's 16-year history and is constantly evolving. But when EVE Echoes enters the scene on mobile devices, none of that direct mechanical history is being carried over. The economy will start completely fresh, the meta is brand new and no one really knows what to expect, not even the studios behind it (C??CP and mobil?e partner NetEase).

I had the chance to speak to multiple members of the EVE Echoes team at EVE Vegas this past week, and although there are a lot of lingering questions that won't be answered from now until the e?ventual 2020 release, thing?s look very hopeful.

You may have heard the name NetEase pop up before. Far removed from their scrappy early mobile days, NetEase is now an industry titan, partnering with companies like Microsoft, Blizzard, Bungie (as a minority investor), Marvel and now Icelandic EVE Online creator CCP. I had the chance to speak with two of their members (Bing Xi, general manager, CCP Shanghai and Wei Su, producer, EVE Echoes, NetEase) as well as EVE Echoes brand manager at CCP Ragnar Örn Kormá?;ksson, to see how things are going and where they're headed to.

Before that conversation I did get a lengthy hands-on with the game, and I have to say: my first thought is that it looks and sounds like EVE. Given that EVE Online isn't the most action-oriented game in the first place (combat is tactical, and much of it is exploration or resource-based) a touch-screen interface feels right at home, and the ability to pinch zoom in/out to admire your ship/the galaxy is a natural inclination. Menus (which EVE Online and Echoes are full of) are similarly easy to navigate. While there is work to do (some commands, like ship speed, aren't as intuitive, but they are implemented), I'm shocked that Echoes looks t?his good in what is ostensibly an Alpha s??tate.

Su explained that the goal is to basically be a different flavor of EVE on mobile devices, but still maintain the spirit of the original. "It takes place in a different universe," he told me, "but will keep the same principles." Su's vision seems inline with CCP's original take on EVE's place in the MMO universe, where "everything is open to player domination, while still preserving EVE's complexity."

Domination is the right term, because Echoes, like its PC-daddy, is going to have a player-driven economy on a single shard (server). It's a lofty goal for sure, but a decidedly EVE-based one, and is by far the most alluring aspect of Echoes. After all, as a casual EVE player I'll be able to get into Echoes day one before all of the corporations are established: before the meta forms. Given that this has never happened in EVE Online&nbs??p;since 2003, it's a shockingly enticing prospect. Su agrees.

When asked about whether or not Echoes will cannibalize EVE proper with players flocking to the new hotness, Su replied, "Our goal is two-fold. What we want to do is bring in new players, but also bring back returning EVE players who may have fallen off. We want to expand the EVE community with the same setting, and the same EVE feel." Speaking to Kormáksson later in the day, he believes that it will cause a "halo effect," with players swapping back and forth between both games. But what about the crossover potential? While NetEase isn't qui?te ready to talk about it, it's on everyone's mind. "It is a paralle?l universe, so there's potential there," Xi says. "Be sure that it'll happen at some point, we just don't know how yet."

The question on everyone's mind (especially those who have played NetEase games) is monetization, and based on the reaction of the team, they're still figuring things out and don't want to piss off the current EVE userbase. "It's early stages yet, but we're inspired by how EVE has done it. We're listening to the community, and want to do this right. We don't want a pay-to-win scheme." It's vague for sure, but hopefully they'll stick to that plan: because right now EVE is still chugging with its current model, and if Echoes wants any chance at succeeding in the west long term, it w?ill need to avoid fleecing its core base.

EVE Echoes is aiming for an open beta period by December (after which point the data will be wiped). From there they'll listen to player feedback and fine-tune the game for an eventual "2020" (no window) release. For now things are looking good. I only hope they can stick the landing with the monetization of the game and manage to capture new EVE universe hopefuls while wrangling in lapsed players or current EVE masterminds. The more people ??contributing to this crazy experiment, the better it'll fare down? the line.

After all: complete player-dependency comes with a price. CCP has both soared and paid for it at some?? point in their two decade plus history.

EVE Online: Invasion Chapter 2

I remember the fan response when EVE Online first?? introduced the Triglavian faction into the fold, and the success of the new storyline has been overwhelmin?g. CCP has been smart to keep riding those good vibes over the past year and change, and now that train is going to keep running.

On November 26 EVE Online: Invasion Chapter 2 will be released, continuing the core campaign while introducing a ton of new features. Shareable bookmarks is the big one (kind of like a Google Maps feature for EVE, for sharing player locations), and the Zirnitra dreadnought will be added into the mix, packing an Entropic Disintegrator. CCP has also been hard at wor?k with their new player experience (NPE), hell-bent on making this arduous game much more manageable for the masses. CCP will talk more specifically about those changes this week, while still focusing on the "universe changing events" the series is known for to help keep old players interested.

As a reminder, the keynote Fanfest in Iceland was broken up this year into multiple 'fests: one of which is happening this week in Las Vegas. CCP shared a new clip today showcasing that initiative and the success they've had uniting developers and fans. CCP has also confirmed that there will be a Reykjavík, Iceland event in 20?20, welcoming players back to the ?homeland of the studio.

As someone who has attended most of the major EVE? gatherings in the past three years or so, I can attest to the developer-fan connection. There are no guarded walls or ivory towers protecting CCP: they're mingling with the crowds all event long.

Here's some new footage

CCP games might have backed off on VR, but they're still as experimental a?s ever.

Not only do they have a first-person shooter in the works (Project NOVA), but they're always looking to push EVE Online in different ways, including the previously announced Aether Wars project in conjunction with UK-based tech company Hadean. CCP describes Aether Wars as an "ongoing research and?? development initiative to push the boundaries of large-scale multiplayer experiences and explore the possibilities of cloud gaming.

In other words it's not directly benefiting EVE users right now, but it could very well help push the game into a new era. CCP initially declared their lofty goal over 10,000 players at once, which was met at GDC 2019 with 14,274 "connected clients in a single-instanced, multi-region game world." The next phase of this project will begin soon, CCP says, stating at EVE Vegas today that the?y "want to push the technology even further," by "testing the limits of virtual worlds." More details will be shared later today, and the big world record "single multiplayer PVP videogame battle" ??attempt will come during EVE's London meetup on November 23 at London's O2 Arena.

Fo??r now, you can get a glimpse of the concept below.

Although CCP skipped out on the main Reykjavik, Iceland (the home of their headquarters!) fan? fest event this year, they're still?? moving full steam ahead on the flagship event of 2019: EVE Vegas.

The festivities will kick off this Friday through Sunday at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will mostly deal with EVE Online and the mobile project EVE Echoes (sadly, the highlight of the event for me last year, Project Nova, is not on the schedule). Instead, there's plenty of talks in store for EVE Online, including panels hosted by the big dogs at CCP and community members like the Space Pope (Max Singularity).

The Triglavians keep coming

Last year CCP introduced the Triglavian Collective faction into the mix, and it seems like the fans have spoken: they want more. CCP ??is happy to acquiesce, as the new expansion, "Invasion," is doubling down on their threat.

It's coming on May 28, and will put the Triglavians on the forefront of New Eden rather than relegating them to the shadows. CCP promises that it will "change the EVE universe forever," and teases that the Triglavians will be a major presence in the game through the rest of the year. They'll bring new tech too, like their Frigate, Destroyer, and Cruiser-class ships. The interesting Mutaplasmid system from last year (in ?which players can essentially gamble for better upgrades or end up with worse ones) is here to stay.

I attended both major E?VE events in 2018 and the fan reaction on-site and in the coming weeks was positive for the Triglavians: it makes perfect sense why CCP would want to give the players what they want.

As usual, Invasion will be a free expansion for current EVE players when it arrives later this month.

Tickets are on sale now

A lot has happened with EVE Online studio CCP in this past year. The company was bought out by South Korean conglomerate Pearl Abyss, VR development winded down s??ignificantly, and of course, the flagship Icelandic event EVE Fanfest is skipping a year in favor of smaller occasions across the world.

For US fans EVE Vegas is one of the highlights, and CCP has announced that tickets are now on sale for the fan-centric event, which will run from October 25-27. If you've never been to one before it's ??basically a mini press conference, series of symposiums, hands-on sessions, and parties all wrapped into one. This year it will be held at The Flamingo, whereas the last several events have been at The Linq.

To r??ecap the new process CCP is using for 2019, EVEsterdam in Amsterdam kicked off the world tour last month. Next up is EVE Russia in St. Petersburg on May 4, then EVE Down Under in Sydney Australia on August 23, then G-Fleet in Berlin on September 13-14, with EVE Vegas on October 25-27, and EVE London capping it all off on November 23.

Instead of the proper Iceland Fanfest

CCP has completely changed its game plan in the past year. After announcing that VR initiatives were kaput, they bolstered EVE Online and shifted some personnel around. Oh, and they decided to forgo the big "EVE Fanfest" meetup in Iceland in 2019, ri?ght in their home city of Reykjavik. Instead, CCP will be holding multiple events around the world. They were vague up until today, but now we have a full road map of what's to come.

The tour will kick off on March 23 ??in the Netherlands for EVEsterdam, which will have a keynote of its own at the Compagnie Theatre and an official party. On May 4 CCP will host EVE St. Petersbur??g in Russia at the Akakao, followed by EVE Down Under (Australia) on May 23-26 in the SMC Centre.

On June 21-23 the company is going to Toronto for EVE North, followed by Fanfest HOME ?in Finland on August 23 at Kaimonsaari. Germany is next on September 13-14 in Berlin at AltMunze, then of course EVE Vegas from October 25-27 in Las Vegas, which CCP is still calling the "tentpole event." Finally, EVE London will be held on November 23 at the 02 Arena.

As you can clearly see from some of the date sprawls and locations, the one-day events are mostly parties located directly at a bar, whereas the multi-day events have keynotes and official tournaments sprinkled in. More info will be released as the year goes on, but for now you can find the breakdown here.

Project Nova Royale

For Icelandic EVE Online developer CCP, Project Nova was a long time coming. Ever since the attempt to break into the shooter market in 2013 w??ith Dust 514, CCP has been chasing the genre.

Two years ago they unveiled Project Nova with a brief h??ands-on period at Fanfest, then promptly put it back on ice. With the help of UK studio Sumo Digital, it's very much a reality, heading i??nto a private alpha next month.

I spoke to several key figures at EVE Vegas about what Project Nova is trying to accomplish, as well as the battle royale-sized elephant in th?e room.

Why not start at the top? CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson was eager to talk about Project Nova, and happy to address the current craze that is the battle royale genre. "Every game is going to have it, aren't they?" he said. "I would say that most of our team plays PUBG, we even have people that play it every single day. Fortnite, same thing. There's a lot of developers here at CCP that are passionate about the genre. The thing is, I don't think we're going to rush into it just yet. If CCP does it, and this is a very us thing, we're go??ing to do it with a twist. We'll have to look at metrics and fan demand as the game co?ntinues."

Snorri Árnason director for Project Nova at CCP, had similar thoughts, getting increasingly excited at the idea of it: "No one could have predicted that this genre took over but we need to assess if it's here to stay. Interestingly our team plays a lot of shooters and look at all the modes we could include...we all sort of said collectively 'king of the hill, hardpoint, those types of modes have been here for decades. That's what we want to build on.' Now battle royale would make sense to a point. I mean our game's playable characters are clones for the purposes of the story. How cool would that be if they were brawling it out in a gladiatorial arena for the enjoyment of the EVE Online populace? That dystopi??an concept would fit so wel??l."

Coming back down to Earth a bit, Árnason gave us the technical reason why battle royale won't be available at launch: he says Project Nova specifically works better with smaller player counts. "What our game is really balanced around is 16v16 PVP [though there ??????????????????????????are smaller more focused PVE modes]. We want that intimate team-based gameplay ?and higher counts don't really facilitate that. With the sci-fi setting you really feel like just a cog in the machine. It ruins the fantasy and we didn't like the idea of that."

When pressed as to whether or not a 100-player Project Nova mode was possible, Árnason told me "yes, it very much is. We're running on the Unreal Engine 4, same as PUBG and other battle royales, so there are no technical limitations for t?hat for us, only design-oriented." So the road is paved (it's technically possible and could even fit thematically), it's just not in yet by choice. Both players and CCP alike will see just how viable the PVP and PVE focus is next month. For now, we wait.

With two shooters, a sports game, an MMO and several other genres under their belt, what would CCP even tackle next? According to CEO Pétursson, idle games (clickers). "I have no idea how this would even make sense but I want to do it," he says as he laughs. "I'm addicted to these games: I've put hundreds of hours into them. If I could make one that makes sense for the EVE universe I'd do it." "Mining, perhaps?" I suggest -- "yes??, yes, that could work," Pétursson says with more?? laughter.

Abyssal Deadspace 2.0

Earlier this year CCP brought Abyssal Deadspace zones into the mix: part of an increasingly popular MMO trend to provide randomized and rewarding instanced content into the fold. They seem ?to be pretty happy with how it turned out, as they've just announced a full expansion of the system in the form of "Abyssal D??eadspace 2.0" live at Eve Vegas.

In addition to things like new ships and structures, Abyssal Deadspace will now provide a co-op angle, something initially promised this year that fans have been looking forward to for months. Additional difficulties are baked in to accommodate the higher player count, as well as another unique twist: at the end, you can battle it out against another play?er, PVP-style. As part of a broader focus for the upcoming winter update, Upwell Navigation Structures are being expanded a bit for easier traveling and an Activity Tracker mechanic will assist players in finding things to do.

Right now it seems like things are business as usual for CCP despite being acquired by Korean publisher Pearl Abyss several months ago. According to their CEO Hilmar Pétursson, CCP is allowed to work as an independent studio under this arrangement and EVE's development will not be heavily impacted by th??e shakeup.

Bask in the glory of a no-death run

As part of today's EVE Vegas opening festivities, press were granted access to the first-ever alpha build of the new Project Nova. Set for general consumption next month in the form of said alpha, the below video shows off a full PVE match of Nova, wi?th yours truly rocking it wi??th no deaths and a top score.

The gist? It's kind of like Mass Effect's popular multiplayer element with capture points (Domination, Hard Point, whatever you want to call it). Once you've acquired enough points it's on to the extraction point. Hold it for 60 seconds and you're good! Three classes were available in our build, ranging from demolition, to all-comers ??(assault), to sharpshooting focuses. PVP?? is also slated to enter the fray in the future.

Based on what I played I walked away happy (the Vanquish-like boost slide rocks), though I'm not sure it's flashy enough at the moment to really hit the mainstream FPS circuit. I know what you're thinking -- a battle royale mode will help -- but that isn't planned at the moment. I'm getting a Lawbreakers vibe from Nova so far: it's fast, flashy and impressive, but needs something more? to rea??lly catch on.

I'll let the gameplay talk for itself for ??now??. You can get a look at that below as well as the full control layout.

A 'new and improved' War of Ascension is coming back in 2019

Icelandic EVE Online studio CCP is doing some pretty severe housecleaning, and they're getting a little help from their friends. Alongside the Sumo Digital collaboration Project Nova, CCP also announced EVE Echoes today at their Eve Vegas gathering. In a partnership with China-based developer NetEase, Echoes is described as a way to "recreate EVE Online gameplay on a mobile device"? in a para?llel universe.

It'll allegedly launch globally in 2019, but a Chinese release will come first due to the aforementioned team-up with NetEase. As PC and console-centric studios struggle to enter the mobile realm many other agencies have been reaping the benefits for years. With the help of NetEase, Echoes might be able to make a splash.

There's another part to this mobile saga too. Strategy title EVE: War of Ascension (previously known as "Project Aurora," is being paused, at least temporarily. Despite "exceeding expectations" in the words of CCP, the live game has been taken down in favor of "exciting new features" coming in 2019. CCP stressed to us that this is "not the end of the game," as a "new and improved version" is in the pipeline. All purchases have been refunded and progression will not carry over to this new version of Ascension.

Kongregate is still part of the project and more information will be communicated in the future. This new War of Ascension build is also confirmed to launch before Echoes. Ju??st as CCP wildly shook up their in-house VR studios, so too are they soldiering forward with mobile.

Starting with an alpha

In May of 2013, EVE Online developer CCP launched Dust 514 exclusively on PS3, only to shut it down three years later. It was an incredibly ambitious project for the MMO-centric company, and after following it up by diving into the vehicular combat and sports genres, they're ready to take another crack at shooters. We've known about Project Nova for a while, but today at EVE Vegas the developer?? is getting it all out i?n the open.

Starting next month CCP will conduct alpha testing for Project Nova (which is still a working title), as part of a joint effort between the Icelandic studio and the Sheffield-based Sumo Digital. Taking place in the same world as EVE Online, you'll take control of a Warclone (an elite soldier) on behalf of AEGIS against the? faction Sansha's Nation.

Nova boasts a "multiple act narrative" on top of character progression like additional weapons and mods amid thre??e class types (light, medium, heavy). PVE and PVP modes are planned (as well as squads of two, three, or four, a popular battle royale scheme). In case you're wondering "there are no plans" for a battle royale mode at the moment: I asked.

As for the bigger picture details, CCP isn't ready to talk about those just yet. No pricing model has been announced and the game is said to "co-evolve" with the community as time goes on, which includes a "Conclave" initiative of closed NDA testers working closely with the team. The studio says that this is the perfect entry point for people who find EVE Online "too unforgiving," but want to take part of the universe in some form. Both games are indeed the same world (it's said to pick up "several years" after Dust 514)&nbs?p;but aren't being completely linked mechanically: at least not at first.

All Eve Vegas attendees will be given alpha access automatically, but the rest of you can sign up for a chance to get in. If you're so inclined you can register here.

October 19-21

Change has been a constant for CCP this past year. They completely jettisoned their VR projects (and studios attached for that matter) in an effort to focus in more on the core EVE Online experience. They've also just been acquired by the South Korean studio behind Black Dessert Online: Pearl Abyss. Des??pite all that, CCP insists it's business as usual.

1100 players (dubbed "capsuleers" inline with EVE's universe) are attending, which is actually bigger than last year's Vegas event and larger than any non-Iceland gathering for the studio to date. It kicks off on October 19 with an opening ceremony ??at 2:00 PM PT and will run through October 21. Once again it takes place in The Linq hotel in Vegas, and will be centered around a more fan-centric focus than the larger-than-life Iceland event.

Whether you're attending or just want a glimpse into how EVE Vegas operates, the full blog post (dubbed a "megablog") is worth reading -- the best part is easily the shoutout for GreyGal, who helps run EVE events and is one of the nices??t peopl??e I've ever met.

We'll be giving you updates on the weekend as they come! You can find a full schedule in the gallery?? below.

They're all in on it

Epic pretty much has it made right now. Back in the day they ruled the FPS realm with Unreal Tournament, and now with Fortnite ?they're more popular than ever. Oh, and an overwhelming amount of games use their engine -- you know, that whole chestnut.

That list includes CCP, developer of EVE Online. The Icelandic-based developer that also has studios across the world re-commited to the Unreal Engine 4 today, noting that it is now the "exclusive development tool for all unannounced projects."

Bing Xi, development director at CCP Shanghai, explains why: "Although CCP Games has used versions of Unreal Engine for more than 10 years on various projects, Unreal Engine 4.20 has massive improvements. UE4’s latest enhancements, like the new ProxyLOD mesh reduction tool and the n?ew Niagara VFX editor are among the many features that make game development a more efficient process.”

It might not seem like a big deal, but for CCP, it really is. The studio recently went through a ton of changes, shifting priority back onto EVE Online proper as they shuttered several of other studios and their VR efforts as a whole. While Project NOVA is still looming on the horizon the reveal that they have other u?nannounced projects highli??ghts that they're back on track.

There's uh, a lot to unpack

As I explained just a short month ago, CCP is on a mission -- full sail ahead on EVE Online. For a company that basica??lly built itself on the back of its esoteric MMO that vocation makes perfect sense, but the Icelandic studio was in the process of making strides in the VR, console, and mobile markets before slimming down last year.

That doesn't mean they're slimming down EVE though, as CCP is hosting its whopping 38th named expansion this week -- Into the Abyss. Its main event i??s most definitely the addition of abyssal deadspace, a roguelike element that involves combing pockets of Triglavian-controlled space pockets for randomized loot. UI scaling for 4K monitors, faction citadel conversions, pl??anetary interaction, and all sorts of inside baseball goodies also await hardcore fans.

In case you were wondering, CCP is continuing its Fanfest plans as well, and is currently revvin??g up for EVE Vegas later this year. Based on my assessment of the p??assion I saw on display from the team and from fans at Fanfest proper in April, it's clear that the game isn't going anywhere despite the macro refocusing.

The studio looks to the past to predict the future

CCP Games, creator of the equally famous and infamous EVE Online, had a lot to celebrate last week. Mere minutes from their offices in Rey??kjavik Iceland, at the Harpa concert hall, they hosted their 14th Fanfest: a celebration of the game and its fans by way of a three-day event.

But the studio is coming off of a rather uncharacteristic past few years, having invested so much in VR, only to watch its investment stagnate. CCP managed to hit several milestones with VR, as EVE: Valkyrie was not only the first game to break the cross-platform VR barrier, but it also brought us into the surface of EVE's planets with the Ground Rush expansion. Sparc, a competitive sports project, was the first non-EVE thing the company had ever done. The future looked bright, and then in October of 2017, CCP pulled the plug on both the pair of ga?mes and the studios ??involved.

As CEO Hilmar Pétursson noted at the Fanfest 2018 keynote, it was time to refocus. Pétursson had spent so much time working on VR that he didn't have time to play EVE, something h??e vowed to correct just last week when he announced he had recently returned to the game.

To make sense of these shifting tides, I spoke to several key memb??ers of CCP staff about where they were going and where they've been.

While the situation may seem dire on the outside, the mood at this year's Fanfest was as bright as ever. Every attendee I spoke to was happy that VR was kicked to the curb, and in the words of one player: "it's great to see EVE as the main focus now."

And EVE was the focus of every talk, keynote, and the closing ceremony. Beyond a brief mention of the death of VR and the existence of Project NOVA from Pétursson, the focus was all EVE Online all the time. Amidst cheers from fans and ??worried murmurs I watched the announcements flow, and was witness to the constant callouts of various corporations (guilds) and alliances (collections of corporations) from CCP. The company explained in a press briefing that this is the biggest Fanfest to date, and that they expect EVE Vegas to grow even further in 2018.

Fanfest itself is going through some changes. There won't be an event in 2019 i?n favor of another, smaller fan-focused gathering somewhere in Europ?e. This is on top of "EVE Down Under" in Australia, a still undisclosed east coast event, and of course, EVE Vegas, which was just dated for October 19-21.

I spoke to Paul Elsy (CCP Falcon), Senior Community Manager at CCP about the new plan, and he seemed rather excited about the move to more Fanfests. "As the program director of Fanfest I know a little bit about this. As you may have seen Iceland is becoming a really expensive country again, the exchange rate is crazy. Remember, Fanfest is coming back in 2020. We're kind of just hitting the pause button. There's always little gatherings when it comes to EVE fans...we're everywhere. There's so many solid gatherings in Germany and the UK, so we're spoiled for choice when it comes to the European Fanfest, but people will be celebrating regardless. It's going to be a bloody busy year, especially since EVE Vegas is approaching Iceland's Fanfest in terms of attendance. It's still all about getting destroyed and celebrating spaceships...and playing blackjack a lot. I don't think we couldn't do Vegas, it's be??come a real hallmark of the calendar. I couldn't imagine a world where we don't go to Vegas as a company."

CCP is also doubling down on EVE-centric team members, re-focusing some of that budget, and I had the chance to speak to a relatively new hire. David Ecker (CCP Shreddy), Live Producer for EVE explains that he continues to work on The Agency, an interface that helps players find things to do in the EVE universe. "Back in the day, in the old era of gaming, I'm thinking the end of which was 2008, you would ship a game and then never go back to it. But ever since then the landscape has changed and you need to keep supporting your game. CCP has been really receptive to that idea, which is why you've seen EVE survive so long. We're constantly looking at things to change, tweak, and introduce." That mentality includes updates big and small, like the upcoming expansion Into the Abyss.

Sæmundur Hermannsson (Saemi), Brand Manager at CCP helped explain why they think the game will never die. "Passion, that's it. Fans have such a strong opinion on the game, and they're coming to Iceland through the middle of winter just to talk about it. The very first Fanfest happened soon, so the link between the community wasn't instant, but natural. The biggest challenge for us is to keep them informed. These guys, they're geniuses, they know more about EVE than most of us. It's no secret and? it shouldn't be. That relationship has had its ups and downs, and the players have been mad, something I totally understand, as you can't be mad if you aren't passionate. They're the lifeblood of the game and why we're here."

Following up I asked him if there was such a thing as too forthcoming, and his response was interesting: "There are pockets of things we need to be open about, absolutely. For instance balancing issues, that's something the community wants to know about. I play a lot of FPS games myself, and I know the feeling of coming in and having something undocumented show up. Players can lose a fight because something wasn't documented, that's a horrible experience. On the other hand there is some things they don't need to always know, as EVE Online is a living world. This is a real thing, not just raw code. Take the new expansion...we want small reveals, so we don't spoil things. We as a comp??any have a fun time revealing things too. We want to see their faces when we do it."

Brenton Hooper (CCP Larkin) a designer for EVE, works specifically on the universe of the game, and in his words "the tapestry of EVE's relationships." He thinks Into the Abyss is going to change the way players, both old and new, look at EVE. "We've had heaps of feedbac?k so far already! People are excited about the potential of ?mutators (randomized upgrades that can power-up or power-down pieces of your ship), as you can earn them even just a few hours in, the only requirement is that you have a cruiser. You can go in, earn filaments and do these randomized pieces of abyssal deadspace almost right away."

The idea of randomized dungeons is fascinating, and something several MMOs, including World of Warcraft, are moving toward (and funnily enough, mutators are a lot like the Titanforged mechanic in WoW, but with an EVE twist that it can screw you). Hooper goes on to explain the concept of abyssal deadspace further, noting: "it's a mix of procedurally generated content and deliberate design. It's a?ctually something we're excited for, and we're keen on possibly looking at inserting into other older aspects of the game. It's not something we're announcing rig?ht now, we're just looking at it. We want to keep these as accessible as possible and bring new people in."

As for VR, there doesn't seem to be as much hope. Pétursson explained to attendees that although CCP is proud of the work they've done and that the medium is still ahead of its time, it just isn't ready yet on the consumer side. It's a pretty frank admission, especially since so many other studios aren't willing to drop that hammer, and again, it's allowed CCP to take one foot out of VR and promptly plant both legs into EVE proper.

EVE Online isn't going anywhere anytime soon. As one of the pioneers of VR they took a risk, and based on my chats with various members of CCP staff, it was a calculated one. The company is set to move offices across Reykjavik as soon as the building is ready, and there's talk of shifting the gigantic EVE monument indoors to protect it from the elements. In a wa?y, that notion sort of sums up CCP as a company. They're willing to protect their legacy by any means, and will continue tirelessly to balance development with fan interaction.

Free for everyone

Today during their 2018 Fanfest keynote, CCP Games announced the new Into the Abyss expansion for EVE Online. It'll take them into the Abyssal Deadspace, a special?? new Deadspace location beyond the normal pockets. It's a unique hostile en?vironment with new NPCs and rare loot.

Because of the way EVE is structured, it'll be free for all players, not just subscribers. As a reminder EVE w??ent free-to-play in late 2016, and just last year CCP removed some of the training wheels for free accounts,?? allowing them to advance their characters more freely.

Into the Abyss will also feature Faction Citadels, player-created landmarks, a new race of NPCs with ships and modules (Triglavians) and a (non-retroactive) character progression activity tracker -- with multiple progression paths and milestones. The Triglavians "appear to be human" in their origin according to the lore, but are a bit off due to their isolation from other civilizations. You'll access the new Abyssal Deadspace through new items called "filaments," which are basically dungeon keys/Diablo III ??rifts that can be activated by c??ruisers with varying rarity.

Into the Abyss is the 38th named expansion for EVE and it'll launch on May 29. Their first was the Castor update in December of 2003, seven ??months after the original launch.

'We are committed to...releasing it when it's ready'

CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson announced live on the 2018 EVE Fanfest stage today that Project Nova, their long-awaited shooter that rose from the ashes of the defunct Dust 514, is still in active development.

Last year Pétursson noted that they couldn't share that many details on the game, but now he's a little less sheepish. Information for Nova will be released on PC within "months, not years," and initially will not be connected to EVE Online. Pétursson and his team really want to commit to the "one universe" EVE concept, but not linking it is a smart move at the moment. CCP isn't afraid to shuck failed projects, and if NOVA doesn't catch on they can toss it before? ??it cuts into their bottom line.

Nova is still not playable on t??he Fanfest floor, but the "months" promise has me hopeful that we'll actually get to see it in action anytime soon.

VR is out, updates are in

??It's pro??bably early where you're at, but it's almost high noon in Iceland!

As announced last year during EVE Vegas, despite expanding into more territories beyond Iceland and Vegas ("Eve Down Under" in Australia, and an undisclosed east coast event), EVE Fanfest proper is still happening in Reykjavik, and we're on location. In a press pre-briefing EVE developer CCP noted that it was their ?"biggest Fanfest yet," beating out their previous record of last year's attend?ance.

Over 1,000 players and 200+ CCP devs (the vast majority of the 300-ish the com?pany employs worldwide) are here, and the game is still alive and well -- with CCP reporting $81.4 million in revenue ($18.1m of which is profit). If you're interested you can watch ??the stream below as we cover any potential announcements!

CCP Newcastle becomes Sumo Digital's fourth studio

New year, new beginnings. Late last year, CCP Newcastle, the studio primarily responsible for EVE Valkyrie, was set to be sold off by CCP. Now, on the first?? business day of 2018, we know where that team will land.

Sumo Digital announced today that it has acquired what was formerly CCP Newcastle. It's the fourth studio for Sumo Digital; three of them are in the UK and one is in India. No financial? details about the transaction were shared, but 34 employees are making the switch and Owen O'Brien will remain in charge of the Newcastle branch.

Even though Sumo Digital isn't quite a household name in video games, it's the type of developer who has played a support role on a bunch of titles. Recently, it has done work on Hitman, Forza Motorsport 7, and LittleBigPlanet 3 (as well as developing and self-publishing Snake Pass).

However, it's the near future where Sumo Digital will likely receive its most recognition to date. It's one of four developers at work on Crackdown 3, and it's the sole studio (that we know about) that's tackling Dead Island 2. There's big stuff on the horizon for Sumo?? Digital. Now 34 former CCP employees are along for the ride.

Upward of 100 people may have been laid off

[Update: CCP has sent along comment on toda?y's ev?ents. Here's the quote, in full:

"CCP Games is restructuring its studi?o locations worldwide, driven primarily by reduced investments in virtual reality and an increased focus on PC and mobile games. This has resulted in a reorganization and centralization of its five development studios across the world to two in Reykjavík and London. The company's Shanghai studio will be reduced and refocused to support growing business in China through local partnerships.

In the coming weeks, CCP will undertake the following proposed measures: The closure of its Atlanta studio with VR development moved to London, the sale of its Newcastle studio, and the elimination of a number of positions worldwide. CCP has provided severance package??s and job placement assistance for all those affected.

There are no changes to ongoing plans for EVE Online and the company's product pipeline is strong. In early October, CCP confirmed continued development of its PC FPS game, Project Nova and announced a new mobile game, Project Aurora, both set in the EVE Universe. Both projects are on track and unaffec?ted by these changes. CCP will announce additional game releases directly or ??through partnerships over the next 18 months across PC and mobile."]

[Original article] Three years ago, EVE Online developer CCP was a leading virtual reality creator as EVE Valkyrie was pegged as one of the first must-have VR experiences. At EVE Vegas earlier this month, we reported on CCP shifting its mindset awa??y from VR for ?the first time in years. Today, that has led to significant restructuring within t?he company.

News has just broken that CCP has closed its Atlanta studio, the team that's primarily focused on VR projects like Sparc. Senior programmer Sigurdur Gunnarsson confirmed this on Twitter, and stated that he's not bei?ng relocated within CCP.

Although little information is available about this shuttering, Icelandic outlet Morgunbladid reports what we heard at EVE Vegas: It's because CCP is stepping back from VR. Further, it seems as if CCP is selling its Newcastle branch, which is the studio that led the efforts on Valkyrie. Moving forward, the EVE Online developer is going to fo?cus on PC and mobile games.

It's tough to fully understand the magnitude of this without many details. The Atlanta branch is estimated to have had 70 employees (although that number co?uld be outdated). It seems that layoffs rather than relocation is how CCP opted to handle this. W??????????????????????????e've been told that somewhere around 100 employees were affected.

We've contacted CCP for comm??ent on the Atlanta studio situation. We'll update this post if/when we hear back. Everyone at Destructoid wishes the best for all the former CCP employees and hope they land on their feet as quickly as possible.

Custom games and spectator options are on the way

EVE: Valkyrie was the first major game to ever launch on a consumer-grade VR platform (it far overshadowed Lucky's Tale back in March of 2016 on the Rift), and even though it did eventually arriv??e on the HTC Vive and PlayStation VR marketplaces, it maintained ?its hard stance on virtual reality -- until recently.

Its most recent update EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone removes the VR requirement, but ?it does it in the best way possible by still allowing full cross-platform support across the PC and PS4, eliminating all walled gardens in the process, including an actual (still expensive?) headset. Yep, you can play against VR users without using VR and vice-versa.

Lead designer Andrew Willans had a lot to say about this journey at a Valkyrie keynote at EVE Vegas this week, as the team prepares for its ?seventh major update to arrive this winter.

While Warzone is a hefty patch all on its own (no more VR, a capture the flag style mode, two new maps, a few quality of life changes), Wilans explains that they're also hard at work on a winter updat?e, which will hopefully bring a few long-awaited features into the fray -- spectating and custom matches. Although he constantly refers to a few bells and whistles as "stretch goals" that might not be done in time, he showcased both first and third-person spectator perspectives with eSports style action camera options, as well as the ability to program custom matches for individual round parameters like objective types and even minutiae like "speed of capture" for certain gametypes.

They're also looking to satisfy the needs of a lot of hardcore flight sim players with PC options like multi-monitor support, expanded flight stick support, and Tobii eye-tracking, but?? maintain that there will still be parity with console editions so they don't get left out in the dust. This whole mentality is genius as CCP doesn't need to hedge its bets in any particular arena of VR, whereas droves of other studios are working out long term or perpetual exclusive deals with platforms that may or may not pan out.

As I've said several times in the past, one of the cooler aspects of CCP's events is how much they integrate with the crowd. As soon as Willans was done with his presentation he plunked himself down into a group of fans, and started having a candid conversation about mechanics and where Valkyrie was headed -- without a PR person to guide hi??s every m??ove.

While CCP hasn't given us hard numbers on concurrent players or whether or not the Warzone update has reinvigorated the game as much as they would have liked, they seem happy with the state of the game and are still moving full steam ahead with their audience behind them all the wa??y.

Alpha to Omega

CCP had a rather low key keynote for its EVE Vegas event, but there were a few big announcements regarding their mainstay, EVE Online, that a lot of returning players and newco?mers are going to be looking forward to.

Along with the Lifeblood expansion on October 24, CCP has been working on overhauling the Alpha (read: free-to-play) experience for EVE as a direct result of fan feedback. The main draw is that Alpha users will now be able to use more skills (one of the main sources of progression in EVE), including Tech II (T2) and small/medium weapons (a change that sparked a huge cheer from the crowd), and access all factions. Game designer CCP Rise provided an exact number on the increase too -- Alphas can now train from a five million skill point (SP) cap?? all the way up to roughly 20.5 million. They can also use battlecruisers and battleships, which elicited screams ??of joy and nervous laughter respectively. CCP explained that while the latter class of ship is relatively big time for any given free Alpha player, they're not allowing them to access Tech II with battleships right away, and will assess the situation and balance as needed.

They conveyed the message that these alterations would be better for a more long term sustainable play style for Alpha users, but there is a catch -- you need need to subscribe to premium (Omega) to train up past the five million SP?? mark, at which point you can reach the cap of 20.5m. If you unsubscribe and become Alpha again, that's when you can use skills up to that new cap of 20.5m. We can expect to see this update later this year.

It's amazing to see how upfront CCP is with community interacting, openly encouraging players to come up to them during the Vegas event and request features or give ?general feedback, even if it's negative. It's the inverse of what a lot of big publishers are doing with their closed door, "we know better" approach, and I think it's working out for the Iceland-based studio. While a lot of feedback from any given gaming community can result in a lot of yelling, CCP seems to know how to filter it out and squeeze diamonds out of any given lump of coal.

Test session open this weekend for EVE Vegas attendees

The rumors are true -- CCP is bringing the EVE Online universe into the mobile arena with Project Aurora.

Announced at EVE Vegas today, Aurora is described as a free-to-play game set in the EVE universe. It's jointly developed by EVE creator CCP and the mobile studio PlayRaven, and will follow the whole MMO archetype once again. While it's not actually out (and CCP was quick to explain that "there is no cu?rrent release date") EVE Vegas attendees will be able to actively test Project Aurora on both iOS and Android platforms this weekend in "pre-alpha" form.

Although the Icelandic studio started out as primarily a PC dev, they've since branched out to consoles and the mobile space in an attempt to push more EVE experiences across the world. As you might have expected the reaction to Aurora wasn't met with as mu??ch enthusiasm in the crowd as everything leading up to it, but this is a thing now, and I'll be able to test out a build soon enough to see how it stacks up.

Not just Iceland and Vegas

After opening with a few words on the recent Vegas tragedy (and a list of blood drives attendees could visit), Icelandic developer CCP kicked off their sixth annual EVE Vegas fan event for the massively popular MMO EVE Online with some data, which nicely segued into their plan to expand the Fanfest banner into additional locations in 2019 -- the existing Iceland and Vegas will stay, but will be joined by "EVE Down Under" in Australia, and an undis?closed east coast event (Boston and DC were mentioned, but not confirmed).

As for 2018 Eve Fanfest in Iceland is still alive and well from April 12-14, and tickets are actually on sale now for what will be one of their "biggest Fanfests ever." You might want to attend that one if you're a big EVE player too, because in light of the multi-event expansion, CCP also explained that the m??ain Fanfest will be downplayed a bit in an effort to make the rest bigger. When 2020 hits, CCP says it'll bring it back to full strength from April 2-4, but plans are still fairly nebul??ous that far out.

So how about that data? Well, of the roughly 812 fans attending the EVE Vegas event this weekend (of which I'm in attendance), 738 are from the US, followed by the UK and Canada. In all roughly 1,000 people will be partaking in the various activities of EVE Vegas, including panels, playable games (with a big emphasis on Sparc and Valkyrie), as?? well as social gatherings that promote general community bu?ilding.

Having attended Fanfest proper and EVE Vegas, at this point I can form a clear picture of what the community is like at these officially sancti?oned events. They're passionate, and that feeds CCP in its development -- something th??ey didn't just tell us about in the opening keynote, but showed, with lots of focus on fan requests that they've implemented over the years or are going to implement, and even granular reddit post slides.

They were also pretty hardcore about promoting all of the miniature grassroots fests?? thrown around?? the world, a process that eventually led them to expanding their horizons. If all of the ??cheers from the keynote were any indication, it's only good news for CCP and the future of the game's fanbas??e.
