You know what? It's been a hot minute since I spoke about Doom or its equally influential follow-up, Doom 2. Both staples in the FPS genre, I'm struggling to come to terms with the thought that o??ne day we may stop talking about these classic ga?mes.

However, now is not that time, and if you want to experience a veritable smorgasbord of first-person shooting from well-known names, you should definitely check out Doom: Incarnate. This is a mod from user D3athStalker that combines Doom 2 with Wolfenstein, allowing you to fil??l the boots of the latter's legendary protagonist, BJ Blazkowicz.

Doom 2: the player fires in a room, as gits spray everywhere.
Image via D3athStalker/ModDB

This isn't from old school Wolfenstein, mind. The mod takes huge inspiration from the series as it's understood by MachineGames, the studio that brought us the later installments in the franchise. As such, D3athStalker takes cues from the likes of The New Order, The Old Blood, and The New Colossus. In ?that resp?ect, it combines the old with the new, which is always tasty.

[Insert "but wait, there's more" reference here]

As well as combining the newer Wolfenstein games with Doom 2's engine, the mod also incorporates elements from another series: BloodRayne. Essentially, when you boot up Doom: Incarnate, you'll get to choose whether you p??lay as Blazkowicz or Rayne, or you can let the game ran?domly select for you.

Whichever character you go for will give you certain traits. As noted on the ModDB description, if you go down the Wolfenstein-esque route, you'll start with a? primary and secondary?? weapon of your choice, as well as a hatchet.

However, if you want to experience a Doom 2 take on BloodRayne, you'll start with a pair of long blades as your melee, which have higher?? damage output. However, unlike Blazkowicz, Rayne can't use health items, but does come with some additional abilities??.

Basically, have a tinker and see what outcome works best for you. What I do like about this mod is how it still keeps the original Doom 2 visuals intact, while also gunning for a more Mac?hine??Games aesthetic. Again, tasty.

Along with the original Doom, Half-Life ??is generally regarded as one of the most influential first-person shooters ??of all time. That alone is enough to cement its place in gaming history. However, the continued efforts of the modding community also helps keep Valve's classic in the limelight.

In this instance, we're being transported back to World War I, thanks to ModDB user eyeling. Although it's not out yet, "In Mute Witness Stand" is a different take on Half-Life,? with it being set in the tr??enches during the Great War of 1914-1918.

Half-Life: an undead solider approaches the player in a World War I trench.

While the mod can be described as a reimagining of the horrors of the war, the??re's definitely a sense that "horror" is more what the creator is aiming fo??r here. As well as being able to face off against the Germans, you'll also be fighting against an "army of the dead."

Also rabbits and rats, for some reason

Th??e mod itself which will have both singleplayer and co-op ??elements puts you in the shoes of the good old-fashioned "British Tommies," battling against the forces of evil, with eyeling saying that some of the maps have been based on real-life battles and locations, such as the Charge at the Somme and the First Battle of Gaza.

You'll come up against such "post-living" foes as Undead Tommies (I think the image above shows one of them), as well as Trench Crawlers, which are said to "feast on dying soldiers." Of course, this is a WWI simulator as well, so you'll also be having a bi??t of a set-to with the German army, which includes snipers, landmines, and artillery.

It seems as though this mod is aiming for a sense of realism in terms of warfare, but with a nice dollop of the supernatural thrown in there for good measure. It certainly seems like it's a far cry from what we come to expect from a Half-Life game at any rate.

Whether you're into dense tomes or short novels, I truly believe there's a book out there for everyone. Even if you don't consider yourself much of a reader, there'll be something that'll appeal to your inter??ests.

But if you're on this article, there's a good chance you have at least a passing interest in literature. Of course, all this peaceful reading can get in the way of some meaty gaming. Which is why I've compiled a list of? short novels you can pick up and put down in between levels. Hell, you might even finish some of these before you get to the closing credits.

Minecraft: Steve reading a blocky book in a dimly lit corridor.
Image via G2A.

Some housekeeping before we move on:

  • This list aims to feature books that most of you will know, though there may be one or two more obscure ones in there. In any case, I've managed to compile a healthy selection that are all under 150 pages in length (not an easy feat).
  • I'm aware that novels under 150 pages long can typically be classed as "novellas." However, for the sake of this article, I'm classing them as one and the same.
  • Where possible, I've included the version that has the least amount of pages. This means there may be some books on this list that are more than 150 pages, depending on the edition you go for.

With that out the way, let's take a look at 10 short novels you can power through while waiting at those pesky loadings screens. Let's start with the "longest" on this list.

Animal Farm - George Orwell (144 pages)

Animal Farm - George Orwell
Image via Wordery.

Before 1984, George Orwell (real name: Eric Blair) was already well-versed in holding a mirror up to the darkness of a politically charged society. Published in 1945, Animal Farm is an?? allegorical takedown of totalitarianism, with the story being a biting satire aimed at life under Josef Stalin.

I'd wager a lot of you are already familiar with this one. It's considered a classic of 20th-century literature, but it feels a bit overshadowed by Orwell's magnum opus, which came a few years later. Still, if you haven't read Animal Farm, many would agr??ee that it holds relevance, ev?en to this day.

It's thanks to the author that we have the term "Orwellian" when describing something systematically bureaucratic and fraught with cruel surveillance. You'll definitely see notes of 1984 within Animal Farm.

The Porcupine - Julian Barnes (138 pages)

The Porcupine - Julian Barnes.
Image via Penguin.

Those of you who follow the Booker Prize may have heard Julian Barnes' name before. He won in 2011 with his almost equally short novel The Sense of an Ending, whi?ch was adapted into a film in 201??7 that stars Jim Broadbent.

I've added The Porcupine because it not only falls under the category of being less than 150 pages long, but is also what I'm currently reading at the moment. One might even ??say it's what prompted me to come up wit??h the idea for this article. I certainly would.

The novel is quite fascinating in that it oddly reminds me of Animal Farm, which is a somewhat dar?k satire of the Russian Revolu??tion.

Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck (128 pages)

Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
Image via Amazon UK.

This one may come as a surprise to some. It is a story with a lot of weight to it, so you may have imagined (as I did initially) that Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men was much longer.

Published in 1937, Steinbeck's novel tells the story of the Great Depression, which is said to take inspiration from the author's own experiences working with migrant farmers. Given its status as an important novel that resonates with many readers, I am surprised to see it doesn't appear on more lists of the 20th century's greatest novels.

It is, however, considered somewhat controversial these days. Welsh schools will no longer be teaching it due to the racial language used, according to a report from the BBC. This classic text i?s just one of many that tends to c??rop up in discussions on book censorship.

The Thirty-Nine Steps - John Buchan (128 pages)

The Thirty-Nine Steps - John Buchan.
Image via Alma Books.

Even if you haven't read the book, you may at least know of its 1935 film adaptation, which was directed by Alfred ??Hitchcock. Buchan's short novel was published some 20 years before the Hitchcock film and should appeal to anyone who likes a sense of adventure.

It tells the story of a man who fakes his own death after discovering a plot against Constantine Karolides, the ?Premier of Greece. However, despite holding up in his neighbor's place (said neighbor being the narrator of the story), he is found dead sometime later with a knife in his chest. Ooh, it sounds ever so exciting!

Also, for this entry, I used the Penguin edition that was published in 2018??, though it appears as though the first edition was over 250 pages. We'll ignore that one.

The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway (112 pages)

The Old Man and the Sea - Ernest Hemingway
Image via Amazon UK.

Ernest Hemingway is one of those writers whose reputation seems to exceed the man himself, especially when it comes to his alcohol consumption. A giant in the American literary scene of his day, his tale The Old Man and the Sea is not only something of a modern classic, i?t also won?? him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953.

The Old Man and the Sea endures not just because it's about the titular man who goes fishing ??on the even more titular sea but because of its themes and symbolism. Aside from its alleged Christian connotations??, the story resonates with those who know the struggle of trying to persist or of the losing fight against the power of nature.

Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad (111 pages)

Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
Image via Simon & Schuster.

Now, I've been reassured by my e??ditor that this list did not necessarily have to make any connections to gaming, but whenever I ??come across Conrad's book, it always reminds me of the 1998 PlayStation game of the same name. However, the two are completely unrelated.

Heart of Darkness was originally published in 1899 and takes us through Africa during the ivory trade. With notions of post-colonial finger-wagging, this classic short novel is said to have influenced Francis Ford Coppola's epic war film Apocalypse Now.

However, much like Of Mice and Men, Conrad's story can be the subject of controversy due to its racial depictions. You'??ll do best going into this one with an understanding of i??ts historical context.

The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald (110 pages)

The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Image via Amazon UK.

Much like some of the others on this list, I honestly thought The Great Gatsby would be a much longer novel. While that is actually the case for many versions of the book, the 1925 e??dition is a mere 110 pages long.

A contemporary of Hemingway, Fitzgerald is another na??me that tends to get featured on lists of some of the greatest novelists America has ever produced. And for good reason, some might say. The Great Gatsby is a fierce look at the notions of class, as well as the American Dream. It's been a good few years since I read this, so it's possibly high time I dove back into the Jazz Age scene of 1920s New York.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson (104 pages)

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson
Image via Amazon UK.

You know a novel has become a bigger part of popular culture than its original text intended when you don't even need to say the full title. Typically, most would just refer to it as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or even just Jekyll and Hyde.

Given that Stevenson is responsible for Treasure Island, the literal blueprint for every pirate-themed piece? of media since, his is a name that's synonymous with classic literature, typically held aloft as one of the Victori?an period's most famous writers.

Add on??to this his 1886 short novel (which clocks in at 104 pages if you go by this edition on Amazon), which has heavy themes of duality and is an early pioneer in Gothic literature, and ??you can understand why this novella is still around to this day.

Flatland - Edwin A. Abbott (97 pages)

Flatland - Edwin A. Abbott
Image via Amazon UK.

This might be ano??ther that some o?f you may not be familiar with. However, those who are interested in vintage sci-fi combined with late 19th-century social commentary may know of it. It's a hidden gem, in that case.

Published in 1884, Flatland is set in a universe that only has two dimensions. In this society, everyone is a shape whose worthiness is judged by the number of sides everyone has. Those with more sides, such as hexagons, will be? highly regarded, while the humble circle with its one side is much lower. Sadly, women are pretty much exclusively in the latter group.

It is, as you imagine, a scathing account of class during Abbott's time. The way he's able to describe how citizens interact and see their world despite it being in 2D is a masterclass in imaginative writing. No, seriously, I urge everyone to read this very short novel. You'll get through it in no time.

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens (84 pages)

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

I honestly had two minds about whether to include this one in the list. It definitely cuts a fine line between novella and short story. It's also at the time of writing not Christmas, so thematically, it might not make sense to mention it here. However, that is the po?wer of Charles Dickens' iconic cautionary tale of greed.

Honestly, what is there to say about A Christmas Carol that you won't already know? It's permeated through culture, having survived for over 180 years and maintained itself as the quintessential Christmas narrative. It brought to the cultural fore the name "Scrooge" to mean tight-fisted or when referring to any kind of miserly character. It also gave us the greatest movie adaptation of all time: The Muppet Christmas Carol.

There's a lot of hype surrounding Doom: The Dark Ages, especially since the release date was announced, and we were treated to more footage recently. Evid??ently?, id Software continues to move forward with the franchise. Though, where's the harm in holding onto the past?

As I've proven time and time again, Doom will never cease to be relevant so long as people keep modding it. This time, we're looking at a blend of old and new, as ModDB user duskredy brings us Darkfall, a mod for Doom 2 that adds in the weapons from The Dark Ages.

A screenshot from a Doom 2 level that shows Doom: The Dark Ages' weapons.
Image via duskredy/ModDB.

Currently in Early Access, it aims to seamlessly marry the two together. We still get the overall visuals of classic Doom, but the modder has incorporated the weapon??s from the upcoming game in an attempt to "match the official gameplay closely."

Yes, the Shield Saw appears to be present

Obviously, Darkfall can only do so much to match the energy and spirit of Doom: The Dark Ages, seeing as the?? ac??tual game isn't out yet. As such, the mod is probably relying heavily on the trailers we've been getting, which is still something.

It's nice to see the Shield Saw has made it into Doom 2, as well. This was one of the stand-out items (for me, at least) when we first got a glimpse. It must have made something of an impact, because another modder added the shield to Doom back in June of last year.

If you haven't been keeping up, The Dark Ages is due to release on May 15 and will be coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. And yes, if you are wondering, it will be available on Game Pass from day one. It's also going to be a prequel. Whether it will equal (or surpass) the success of the 2016 reboot and 2020's Eternal remains to be seen at this stage.

The tale of Half-Life and its impact on the first-person shooter genre is something that will undoubtedly live on forever. It's often considered one of the greatest video games of all time, up there with the likes of GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64, the original Doom, and Halo 3.

And thanks to the modding community, I get to keep talking about the game. In this instance, there's an upcoming mod that should appeal to fans of Cyberpunk 2077 or Deus Ex. Created by user Guild of Inventors over on ModDB, The Last Goodbye fully converts Half-Life into a neo-noir game with a Dick Tracy lean.

//youtu.be/jwq6TcXDGME

I'll let the creator enlighten yo?u as to what it's ??about:

In the shadowy fairy tale metropolis of Prava, the gun-for-hire Lucille - better known on the streets as The Banshee - takes a job from enigmatic entrepreneur Ar??k McLean. Her target: Bullseye, the deadliest gangster in town. On her travels through the criminal underworld, she meets all manner of friends and foes, with plenty of action and intrigue along the way.

Tee-hee! I said "Dick"

In case you don't know, Dick Tracy is a fictional detective from an old comic strip and ?movie, featuring strong noir vibes.

While The Last Goodbye is not out yet and there's no current release date the above video gives a nice ??roundup of how development is going. We get to see the current build of it in action, which includes some story elements and voice acting.

As of December 2024, Guild of Inventors says the mod is in a "solid late beta stage of development." It's technically playable, but "certainly not complete." I'm heartily impressed with how it looks so far. You can sort of tell that it will play and possibly feel a bit like Half-Life it being made in the Gold Source engine but with this u??nique take on Valve's classic FPS.

Look, it's pretty simple. If you like the look of this one, you'd do well to keep an eye on it. I, for one, am always taken in by the efforts of the modding community. Gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling in my tummy space. Anyway, if you want to keep up with progress on The last Goodbye, you can check out the developer's Twitter/X, Bluesky, or YouTube channel.

Despite its status as an absolute banger in the early PC gaming era, the original Doom left a somewhat negative mark on the industry. Along with Mortal Kombat, id software's iconic FPS caused parents and US congressmen to gasp at all that 1990s digital violence. "Why can't video games offer more inte??llectual stimulation?" one might say.

Well, wonder no more. As noted by PC Gamer, there's a mod you can get for the OG Doom that will ??be a feast for art lovers. The Gallery Experience is pretty much what it sounds like, in that it re-imagines the game's E1M1 map as an art gallery.

//bsky.app/profile/jasozzgames.bsky.social/post/3lez5ycnyqc2f

Featuring notable works from some of history's most famous artists, the experience lets you walk around admiring great and classic works of fine art, complete with links that will take you to more information on the Met Museum website. Did you know, for example, that Filippino Lippi's Madonna and Child "evokes the area around the Strozzi villa near Flor??ence?" Fasc??inating.

A little Shiraz to go with that Baroque?

You can play Doom: The Gallery Experience in your browser over on Itch.io, or you can download it. I chose the former, and I was particularly amused by the fact that Doomguy walks around ?with a glass of red wine in hand. No?w you can appreciate all the pixelated delights of a Botticelli painting while sipping a Bordeaux. How elegant!

While there are no monsters in the mod, there are items you can pick up as you explore; notably a few hors d'oeuvre and even a bit of cash. Al??l while classical music fills your mind to the brim with sophisticated enrichment.

If you thought Doom could never be paired with words like "intellectual," "cerebral," or "Renaissance," you would be wrong. When you grow tired of mowing down Imps with a chainsaw or firing rockets into the face of a Hell Knight, why not refine your Doom playtime with a ??trip to an art gallery? It's almost as good as the real thing*

If I received a penny for every time I did a post about a Doom or Doom 2 mod, I'd probably have enough to buy at least a loaf o??f bread. That may not sound impressive, but bread can be expensive these days, so that would easily equate to a couple hundred posts. It's still a fair amount for one person.

The point is that I've found another one. This one hits closer to home, as it pertains to a dystopian version of my home country, England. Also, the dystopian premise. That checks out as well. Over on ModDB, user chazlee ?is bringing?? us "Bolero," a dark take on ol' Blighty, with plenty of "urban dismay and raw insanity" to boot.

Doom 2: mean-looking biker gangs on a black background.

Taking on "Cannibals, Cultists, Nazi Bikers," and more in this Doom 2 mod, this is very much going for a leath?er-clad 1970s vibe, which is not quite my era, but I'm here for it all the sam?e.

Dance, dance the Bolero

Sadly, "Bolero" is not yet out, with the download page simply having it down as TBD for its release date. For now,?? the images on ModDB will have to suffice, although it's hard to know what to expect from screenshots. But I do like the dark purple sky and biker gang vibe I ge?t from what I assume is a title image.

Hopefully, it won't be too long until it's out. We all know the old Doom games inside and out by now, so it's always interesting to see the ways in which the fan base keeps tinkeri?ng with the original. It's no wonder we keep talking about the games. Or at least I do.

Add onto that all the bizarre ways Doom has been ported, which includes a version of it on Nintendo's Alarmo device and even placed within the cutesy world of Stardew Valley. Seriously, if I ever get sick of talking about the mods for these classic id Software games, know that I have been taken over by some ??sort of s??entient amoeba*.

*"So what else is new!" Says the funniest person in the room.

It's been pretty well established in the survival horror community that Dino Crisis is the most-wanted Capcom revival in the company's entire back catalog. However, no matter how hard fans want it, the studio just doesn't seem willing to give us a new entry. For now, we ?can at least stick with the original game.

As noted by Twitter/X user Jawmuncher (thanks, Eurogamer), the first Dino Crisis game originally released in 1999 is now available to purchase on the PlayStation Store. Capcom had launched it for PS Plus Premium subscribers, but it's no long??????????????????????????er exclusive to subscribed members.

Over on the PS Store itself, I'm seeing the game on sale for £7.99 ($9.99) or free if you have a Premium membership. It should be said that this isn't a remaster as such. However, the description does say you can enjoy enhanced up-rendering, as?? well as "rewind, quick save, and custom video filters." All that fancy modern stuff.

The lesser-spotted High-res-o-saurus

As if that wasn't enough, the same user also noted that the Director's Cut of the first Resident Evil game is also now available o?n the storefront. Again, it'll set you back $9.99, but is free if you have a PS Plus Premium subscription. Both games have been converted from their original PlayStation 1 versions, and are playable on PS4 and PS5.

As for the future of Dino Crisis, director Shinji Mikami has said he was surprised to learn so many people wanted to see the franchise make a return. Sadly, with the success of Monster Hunter, Mikami doesn't feel another series about fighting large scaly monsters needs to flood the market, so a new Dino Crisis (or possible remake) doesn't feel like it's on t??he horizon any time soon.

But that won't stop the steely determination of the modding community. When last we checked, fans were already in the process of making their own unofficial Dino Crisis games. However, whether we'll see any of these at some point in the futu??re remains to be seen.

Pinball has a visual style all of its own, a tangible reality that most interactive entertainment fails to cap?ture. And while the past few decades have seen the release of hundreds of great-looking, great-sounding, and completely compelling games, some examples stand out in the memory of the pinball community more than others. They might not necessarily be the best games, but they are the embodiment of the pinball age at its most lucrative. Stalwarts of the genre. Masters of design. Icons.

The past few decades have seen the release of hundreds of great-looking, great-sounding, and completely compelling pinball machines. However, som?e stand out more than others. Here are ?18 of the most iconic pinball machines of all time. Take your Skill Shot.

The most iconic pinball machines of all time you absolutely must play at least once

Below, we've listed what w??e believe?? are the 18 most iconic pinball machines of all time. While your tastes may vary, these ones stick out to us above all others for the reasons we've described.

20. Super Mario (1992)

Mario helped put arcades on the map in the 1980s, so it only makes sense that Nintendo would strike while the iron was? hot when pinball made a massive comeback in the 1990s. The red-capped plumber turns almost any game he's in into an instant classic, and the same holds for this simple but endlessly amusing pinball cabinet.

This cabinet ??is a love letter to Mario fans, right down to reusing many of the original game's sound effects. A spinning Pirahna Plant watches as you try to shoot your balls into the Warp Pipe and tag the Bowser flag in the top-right corner. This game isn't that deep, but its colorful charm more than makes up for that.

19. Dirty Harry (1995)

Much more than an elusive Clint Eastwood fan collectible, this pinball machine has some quirks that set it apart from anything else you'll have played. Named after Eastwood's iconic character, Dirty Harry boast??s some nostalgic elements that transport you back in time while you play. S??taring at it brings back memories of hard plastic toy replicas of every movie that hit theatres, the kind of stuff you just can't get these days.

Maybe the best part of the Dirty Harry pinball machine is the moving .44 magnum replica that can and will shoot pinballs at targets, the ramp, and the sinkhole. That unique part makes this one of the best pinball machines of all tim?e for us because there aren't many you can point to and say you remember them for such a specific reason.

18. Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast (2018)

iron maiden legacy of the beast best pinball games of all time

The fact that Iron Maiden has a pinball machine is no surprise, is it? The band has everything else, from its own brand of beer to skins in Dead by Daylight, so this machine makes a lot of sense. What we do find surprising is that his 2018 machine is actually a?? sequel to one St??ern released around 1985.

Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast builds upon the band's mobile game of the same name, in which its mascot, Eddie, battles The Beast. The main reason to play is for the stunning artwork because the game modes se??em to be pretty standard. Of course, they're Iron Maiden's level of standard, which kicks them up a notch.

17. Godzilla (2021)

godzilla pinball machine best pinball machines of all time
Image via GamingLyfe

Stern's 2021 masterpiece, Godzilla Pro Pinball, packs in a meaty storyline worthy of the mod??ern Monarch timeline. Evil aliens known as the Xilians have mind-controlled King Ghidorah, Gigan, Megalon, Ebirah, and Titanosaurus and are destroying the world using their immense powers. Players use Godzilla and its allies, Mothra, Rodan, and Anguirus, to fight back against this threat and ultimately annihilate Mechagodzilla.

This one is something special, with the limited edition featuring a functionally collapsing skyscraper that will capture three balls and send them through every floor as it crashes down. Multiballs are a bit of a nightmare to ke?ep track of, but they feel thematically accurate here because you're trying to cause as much chaos and destruction as humanly possible in a pinball machine.

As if the iconic Godzilla theme wasn't enough, the machine also plays the track, Godzilla, by Blue Oyster Cult just to really ham things up. We can't imagine a better pinball machine for fans of the ??radioactive lizard and his ensemble cast of misfit monsters.

16. Cirqus Voltaire (1997)

Considered one of the last icons of pinball's golden '90s era, Bally/Williams Cirqus Voltaire is one of the most colorful, vibrant, and visually ambitious games of all time, as the player pushes through the various acts of an electric, arthouse circus Its unique aesthetic is reflected in its psychedel?ic playfield, and bolstered by bright neon lighting, ethereal sound, and fluorescent tubing built into the ramps. CV is also well-remembered for its sinister "Ringmaster", a mischievous head t??hat rises and falls to taunt the player.

15. Black Knight 2000 (1989)

Black Knight best pinball machines of all time

The direct sequel to the more modest 1980 release, Black Knight, pinball veteran Steve Ritchie's Black Knight 2000 supercharged the follow-up with faster gameplay, an electrifying visual design, a totally radical dude 'late-'80s aesthetic, and, most notably of all, a blaring banger of a theme song, written by Brian Schmidt and powerful enough to drown out the sounds of every other machine in the arcade. When someone was playing BK 2000, you knew about it, bub.

"YOU GOT THE POWER! GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!"

A machine that embodies the hedonism and raucous nature of the 1980s, BK 2000 is almost twee when viewed by modern eyes. But, make no mistake about it, no pinball machine was more determined to make you, and everybody else, sit up and take notice. Oh, and it was also hard as nails to boot. An incredible three decades later, the sequel Black Knight: Sword of Rage would follow.

14. Scared Stiff (1996)

Scared Stiff is the second of three pinball machines starring The Mistress of the Dark, Elvira. While we personally prefer 1989's Elvira & the Party Monsters, (and we're sadly yet to play 2019's Elvira's House of Horrors), Scared Stiff is the most commonly found of the three games. Featuring the look and vibe of her iconic TV show, Scared Stiff features comic-book gore, a backglass "Spider Spinner" and plenty of callouts recorded by the great woman herself. Gameplay is a tad on the easy side, but SS is a much-loved machine within the community, and a great bookmark f?or modern pinball's "middle ??era".

13. Xenon (1980)

xenon best pinball machines of all time
Image via We Are the Mutants

Released in 1980, Xenon is a stunning and truly iconic trendsetter for the d??ecade to come, wonderfully stylized in the fonts, colors, and architecture that would typify the following years. Not just in pinball but in all forms of new-wave fashion, music, art, and culture.

Xenon features a future-noir silver/blue color scheme, electronic music, a litany of dazzling lights, and the sultry, beckoning voice of composer/sound designer Suzanna Ciani, who entices the player with flirtatious callouts and let's just call it what it is "orgasmic" sound effects. Xenon defined a new era for pinball, which would step away from the bells, chimes, and rootin' tootin' cowboy themes of yore, to be replaced? with an era of solid-state sound, sci-fi, and sex.

12. Monster Bash (1998)

monster bash best pinball machines of all time
Image via The Pinball MAchine

One of the most popular machines in the collector's community, Williams' Monster Bash takes the Universal Monsters, (Frankenstein, The Bride, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon), and reimagines them? as a retired rock band, who are digging themselves out of the grave for a reunion tour. It's up to you to get the ??band back together and back on stage.

Monster Bash is surprisingly straightforward, gameplay-wise, but is hugely popular due to its cast of characters, fun dot-matrix animations, and amusing playfield features. These include Frankenstein's revolving lab table and a ball-stalking Count Dracula. Some of the music tracks, (but not the great main hook), are a little cheesy to modern ears, but Monster Bash's overall concept is great fun, and? the machine sits proudly in many? a collection.

U?niversal should've based The Dark Universe on this.

11. Centaur (1981)

centaur best pinball machines of all time
Image via Pinball Revolution

Arguably the most Heavy Metal pinball machine ever made, Bally's Centaur is in a class of its own where visual design is concerned. Styled almost entirely in black & white, the Centaur playfield is one from which no color will ever escape and is intricately detailed with the dark, comic-book artwork of Paul Faris. Centaur recalls an era of horror comics, Dungeons & Dragons, and ??the parent-bothering "Satanic Panic" that would tear throughout the 1980s.

The "half monster-half motorbike creature" is, quite frankly, funny "af" today, but even that staple of metal cheese just adds to the machine's perfect "time capsule" of the dawning 1980s. A well-maintained Centaur stands today as a thing of beauty.

If pinball did drugs, then Centaur is a cabinet of whiskey and coke.

10. The Machine: Bride of Pinbot (1991)

the machine bride of pinbot best pinball machines of all time
Image via Epic Games

While 1986's Pin-Bot is undoubtedly one of the most beloved classics of the pinball era, its 1991 sequel The Machine, (more commonly known as "Bride of Pin-Bot"), is pinball royalty. The Machine has the player attempt to build a robotic waifu for our boy Pin-Bot. The construction is presented as an epic event, and The Bride comes to life with a soothing and flirtatious voice (ala Xenon), as well as a wonderful sequence where the entire playfield shuts down, The B??ride's birth represented by an evocative "heartbeat" light show.

The Machine: Bride of Pin-Bot is perhaps the shallowest of the Pin-Bot trilogy (1997's Jack-Bot eventually followed it), but The Machine's knack for special effects and storyt?elling made it an incredible smash hit on release, becoming one of the first "Must-Pla?y" pinball machines of the '90s renaissance.

9. Medieval Madness (1997)

medieval madness best pinball machines of all time
Image via Classic Playfield Reproductions

Easily the most popular and recognized of pinball's latter-day period, Williams' Medieval Madness is something of a Crown Jewel within the collections of those able to afford it. And it's quite easy to see why, with its intricately detailed playfield, physical models and effects, and galley of hugely satisfying shots. The audio package features amusing callouts, including Monty Python-esque comedy, an??d a roster of fun allies and enemies.

Whether smashing castles, bashing trolls, defeating dragons, or rescuing damsels, Medieval Madness is a fast-playing, hugely gratifying game, and the ideal title to put in front of a newcomer to help them understand why pinball is so compelling. For these and other reasons, Medieval Madness is also one of the most expensive machines on the market, with original '97 models usually trading well into five figures. No wonder it's cons??idered a rich man's pastime.

8. The Simpsons: Pinball Party (2003)

The Simpsons pinball party best pinball machines of all time
Image via Mezel Mods

Are you really surprised that The Simpsons has its own pinball machine? America's most dysfunctional family is infamous in arcade circles for inspiring one of the most addictive beat-em-up machines ever made, but they're also the theme of not one but two colorful, melodious pinball machines. The original The Simpons pinball machine is well-regarded, but The Simpons: Pinball Party is legendary.

Moving parts fill the playfield of this cabinet, and all of them are charming references to the Simpsons' iconic home, including a couch you can load your multi-balls into and a bashable garage door you can use to get to the upper floor. The real selling point here, though, is the shockingly complex rule set. The Simpons: Pinball Party? lets you stack up multi-balls and bonus rounds like you wouldn't believe, and only an elite few pinball wizards have ever activated the cabinet's Super Duper Mega Extreme Wizard Mo?de.

If this section gives any aspiring pin?ball enthusiasts any ideas,?? good luck.

7. Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure (1993)

In the early '90s Williams' went hard on licensed titles, often to great effect. A great example of this model is 1993's Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure. This "widebody" game, (around five inches wider than the standard pinball dimensions), is a celebration of the original Indiana Jones film trilogy, and features characters and modes inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade.

The playfield features numerous physical effects, including moving idols, a rotating temple gate, a revolver shooter, and a World War biplane. Powerful new DCS sound technology allows for great replications of the famous theme tune, along with voice samples from characters such as Indy, Indy Sr, Marion, Short Round, Willie, and Sallah. Still, today, Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure is one of the very best licensed games.

A sec??ond Indiana Jo?nes game was released by Stern in 2008.

6. FunHouse (1990)

funhouse best pinball machines of all time
Image via Wedgehead

FunHouse truly turned heads upon its 1990 release. As pinball entered a transition period from early solid state and alphanumeric titles into a new world of gimmicks, games within games, and bold ideas, FunHouse became instantly iconic thanks to the disembodied head of mechanical carnival barker, Rudy, who taunts the player, offers hints, and even swallows balls! (behave). Fun fact: Rudy is voiced by Ed Boon, who was a Williams employee and would soon co-create the Mortal Kombat franchise.

FunHouse is perhaps the quintessential pinball game. It's fast and fluid, it's loud and colorful, it's compelling and frustrating, and it's one of?? the final titles that pushed the then-limitations of the market to the brink, right befor??e the launch of a bold era of technically superior, highly polished, licensed games.

5. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

terminator best pinball machines of all time
Image via Wikimedia Commons

One of the most popular games devised by pinball designer Steve Ritchie, (also the original voice of Mortal Kombat's Shao Kahn), Terminator 2: Judgment Day was a part of the then unheard-of billion-dollar marketing drive for James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster. As a typical Ritchie title, Terminator 2: Judgment Day features high-??speed gameplay with a heavy emphasis on complex combo shots.

T2 features numerous firsts: It is the first pinball machine to feature a button-activated auto-launcher, it was also the first game designed with a Dot-Matrix Display (DMD), and to feature a built-in mini-game, as players use the shooter to blast approaching T-800s on the DMD. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is far from the best game on this list, but it was very widely distributed among arcade centers, an?d, as such, is remembered by even th??e most casual of arcade attendees today.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, ??also design?ed by Ritchie, was released by Stern in 2003.

4. Gorgar (1979)

gorgar best pinball machines of all time

While the oldest and arguably most simplistic title of this list, Williams' Gorgar perhaps embodies the identity and culture of pinball more than any of the other games. The storyline s?ees the player battling the titular demon in an apocalyptic showdown, and the playfield is emblazoned in heavy metal iconography, parent-bothering themes, lurid horror-comic artwork, and half-naked humans, all while offering a brutal, quarter-munching challenge.

Gorgar was the first pinball machine to utilize synthesized speech, with a seven-word vocabulary that forms crude sentences. Gorgar eschews music in exchange for a constant pulsing "heartbeat", which adds to the game's unholy appeal. The kind of pinball machine that would likely appear on '80s news broadcasts as "encouraging devil worship", Gorgar's rudimentary gamepl??ay only adds to its old-scho?ol charm.

3. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1993)

star trek the next generation best pinball machines of all time

Williams' Star Trek: The Next Generation might have hit the scene during the show's twilight years, but that didn't stop fans from flocking to its huge, stunningly designed cabinet. Another "widebody" title, Star Trek: TNG took an age to come to fruition, with the design team having to almost move the stars themselves in order to score the license from Paramount reportedly bagged on the insistence that the game's action upholds "The Prime Directive".

ST: TNG is not only a great-looking game, but it is packed with tricky shots, satisfying combos, a Borg Multiball, and a bevy of challenging missions, culminating in a "Final Frontier" endgame. Seven original cast members recorded new dialogue for the sound package, adding to its authenticity. Today, some 30 years later, Star Trek: The Next Generation stands up? easily to any ?modern machine a testament to its timeless design excellence.

2. Twilight Zone (1993)

twilight zone best pinball machines of all time
Image via What's Brewing

Submitted for your approval: One of the best and most iconic pinball machines of the 1990s. Offered a "blank cheque" after his success with The Addams Family, designer Pat Lawlor followed up with this excellent adaptation of another classic of Americana: Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone. The pinball vers??ion of the groundbreaking TV series features references to various familiar episodes, including "Living Doll", "The Hitchhiker", "The Invaders", and "A Most Unusual Camera".

Twilight Zone sports some of the most difficult gameplay in pinball, which turned away all but the most dedicated of players. Despite this, the game is a classy-looking and highly polished delight, with a cabinet that could be found in arcades across Europe and North America for years. TZ doesn't quite capitalize on i??ts theme as well as it could have, but the cool backglass and its rendition of the famous the??me tune should instantly spark nostalgia in any arcade goer of a certain age.

1. The Addams Family (1992)

addams family best pinball machines of all time
Image via Classic Playfield Reproductions

Tell anybody who was around in the '90s that you're into pinball, and never fail, you'll be met with some variant of "Oh yeah, I remember pinball!.. Yeah... Addams Family!". This is with good cause, as Williams' The Addams Family is officially the best-selling pinball machine of all time, having shifted a staggering 20,270 units since its initial release. TAF is, of course, an adaptation of Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 movie, but nobody cou?ld have qu?ite anticipated the game's incredible popularity.

Designed by Pat Lawlor, The Addams Family features a memorable, comic-book playfield with modes based upon various scenes in the movie. These include the secret staircase, the living bear rug, Wednesday's toy train, the family vault, and, most importantly, THHHE MAA-MUSHKAAA! The playfield utilizes hidden magnets to play havoc with physics, while an animatronic Thing emerges from a box to lock balls. As a final touch, Raul Julia and Angelica Houston recorded new dialogue especially for the game, reprising their roles of Gomez and Morticia Addams. 'Tish.

The Addams Family pinball machine was unavoidable /em> a cornerstone of practically every single arcade, bar, beachfront, bowling alley, and nightclub in town. You can still find them on site today, though often in upsetting states of disrepair. But perhaps the best example of The Addams Family's enduring legacy is that, whether y??ou personally play pinball or not...

...You already knew that this was going to be number one, right?

Don't get tilted

The past two decades might have seen pinball become something of a niche, rich folk's pastime, powered by a massively inflated collector's market and the increasing rarity of machine components, but for those of a certain age, there was, truly, a time where you couldn't enter a public building and not fall over a pinball machine or three. Arcades, bars, clubs, laundries, restaurants, theaters, corner stores, a??nd gyms. If there was a five-foot empty space, then it had a pinball machine plonked on it.

There have been thousands of machines produced since the 1930s, from coin-operated bagatelle tables, through to the delightful electromagnetic ?(EM) machines of the '50s-'70s, these would give way to the Solid State (SS) machines of the '80s, pinball's golden renaissance in the '90s, and ultimately lead to today, with companies such as Stern and Jersey Jack continuing to roll out brand new, exciting, hi-tech games for people who have much more money than should ever be legal.

The one thing about the original Doom and Doom 2 was they really liked to emphasize the dreary colors to match the guttural 90s violence. Combined with some of the murkier, bloodier hellscape levels, i?d Software's iconic series is not exactly known for its liberal use of bright colors.

Until now, that is. As you can see, ModDB user DoomMate is currently in the midst of creating a mod for Doom 2 that can only be described as "neon." While it's still a work-in-p??rogress, "Volt Laser" is promising a large selection of custom maps that have taken cues from a more synthw?ave/cyberpunk aesthetic.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmWfEZo92iw

This "megawad" will contain 35 levels, featuring a?? city, underground, some outskirts, and more. You can see the progress that's been made in the video above, and I, for one, am looking forward to running around maps that have purple floors and teal buttons.

Deus-Doom? System Doom?

As mentioned, "Volt Laser" is still being worked on. Its creator did say they wanted it out by November, but have had to delay releasing the mod due to other commitments. At this? time, there's no definite launch day, but it should hopefully be before the end of the year.

However, DoomMate did post recently with some updates from the project, including some more images. I don't know about you, but that skyline in the distance is giving me mad original Deus Ex vibes. Or some other throwback piec??e of dystopian science fiction.

In any case, I'm here for it. Honestly, I'll be surprised if I ever get bored of seeing Doom mods. We've all played the games to death and I know I go on about fan-made content a lot, but if I had even an iota of investment and talent as a l??ot ??of modders do, you wouldn't be reading this article right now.

Let's face it, when playing Doom or Doom 2, the only reason to start punching enemies is that you've just picked up the Berserk power-up. Either that or you have a sadistic, unquenchable desire to know how long it takes to down a ?Cyberdemon with fisticuffs. Hint: it's probably a long time.

Anyway, if you're tired of being given the easy route with weapons, ModDB user Tortilladude has the solution. With "Gunless" installed, you can strip away the need for pistols, shotguns, and rocket launchers, as this mod only allows you to use your punches to quash t??he demons of hell.

Doom 2: a zombie is downed by Doomguy's punching fist as though it's a pistol firing a bullet.
Image via Tortilladude/ModDB.

Making a case that guns in Doom 2 are (and I quote) "for wussies after all," this download replaces all weapon sp?rites with just the Doomguy's fists, which includes numerous variations on the punching animation.

Mano a Imp-o

Now, I haven't had a chance to check out the mod myself, but from the images on the download page, it looks like you still get projectiles. It's just they're now coming from your? knuckles instead of f??rom the business end of a plasma rifle or something.

In any case, Doomguy will no longer have to worry ab??out lugging around all manner of arsenal. Not when he can mow down the denizens of the underworld with naught but his mitts and a "duke it out" mentality.

Once again, we find ourselves drawn back to the allure of classic Doom. The modding community has kept us coming back for more with some pretty interesting ways of playing id Software's iconic FPS. We may be moving forward, what with Doom: The Dark Ages coming in 2025, but it??'ll be a cold day in hell before people?? stop playing and tinkering with the OG entries in the series.

If there's one thing you can say about Doom, it's that it's never boring. Sure, you've clocked the classic games more times than you've eaten soup, but the vanilla experiences are just the beginning. Modding is where i?t's at, yo.

Look, you know how this works. I tell you about a Doom mod and you all go and check it out. This one is not quite like the others, though. It has colors, for starters. Spaceverse: Bunny Maze from?? ModDB user SmilingFaceMedia offers something a little different to just a graphics tweak or some modern innovations.

Doom: a teak world that shows bunny-type women and the player pointing a gun at them.
Image via SmilingFaceMedia/ModDB.

It's a rather bright (red: very teal) FPS that has you playing as a "virtual man" who's stuck in a virtual maze, full of habitants known as "Lunar Bunni??es." That sounds fun, until it becomes apparent that these humanoid bunnies are out to kill you.

Always with the killing

As the creator says, there's more to Spaceverse than just shooting and surviving. You also have to use your intellectual moxie to navigate the maze. Oh dear, ?thinks I.

The mod has been built for GZDoom, ????specifically, and does come with a warning. I'll let SmilingFaceMedia field this one:

Spaceverse: Bunny Maze contains imagery, flashing colours, and other content that may upset some players. If you happen to be epileptic or easily offended, then we discourage you from playing this gamefor your own good. Spaceverse: Bunny Maze is also NOT compa??tible for? mobile as it is only intended to play on PC.

Probably best to make that message loud?? and clear.

As we move ever closer to the release of Doom: The Dark Ages this time a medie?val-themed entry in the iconic series we should never forget whe?re Doomguy came from. Yes, even if he's been turned into a virtual man who has to fight bunny girls.

Doom is just one of those games that feels like i??t's always been there. Indeed, some of you reading this weren't even born when id Software dropped its now legendary FPS onto our collective faces. It's still hangi?ng around today, and one of those reasons is because people keep modding the OG releases.

Some of these people are figurative monsters, however. If you've played the older Doom games on Nightmare difficulty, you know what a challenge it can be. Well, ModDB user immistyer decided that wasn't enough, so has?? given us a new "Impossible" skill to select.

Doom: the player holds a BGF weapon as enemies attack from down a corridor.

One of the key things that makes the origina??l Nightmare mode so h??ard is the fact that enemies keep respawning, so you can never truly get rid of them. Kind of like flies in the summer; they just always seem to be around!

A buzzin' nuisance

However, with this impossible skill level, the ante has been upped by making it so the monster respawn time has been halved. They come back twice as fast this time round. Here's everything immistyer's mod (which is currently available in Early Access) does for the original Doom:

  • Increases monster "Aggressiveness" to 0.95 (ZDoom default is just 0).
  • Makes it so you only get 75% ammo without a backpack, and also so that you only get 1.5x ammo with a backpack.
  • Increases ALL damage by 2x.
  • Increases monster health by 2.5x.
  • Makes it so you only get 0.65% of the armor and health.
  • Makes ALL knockback 2.5x stronger.
  • Replaces all medkits with stimpacks.
  • Enables fast monsters.
  • Disables infighting!!!
  • Makes monsters respawn twice as fast as in Nightmare!!!
  • Sets the spawn preset difficulty to "Hard"

Note that even monster inf??ighting has been disabled. Now all the hellish creatures have nothing to focus on except the most efficient way to turn your meaty body into a fine paste.

I haven't tried the mod myself, but I bet it's a d??oozy. I've only ever really dabbled with the game's official Nightmare difficulty a few time?s over the years, so a setting that labels itself as "Impossible" does not sound like a particularly chill time for me.

Of course, as well as tinkering with the classics, Doom, as a series, keeps moving forward. We already had the 2016 reboot and the equally well-received Eternal. Now we're getting a new one: Doom: The Dark Ages, which takes us back to a medieval period. I don't particularly care where we go, so long as the killing is brutal and the monsters' insi??des go well with the décor.

On July 31, 1989, Nintendo released the Game B??o??y to the US, a gray brick of a handheld console that would go on to dominate the market for years to come.

Sadly for us in the UK, we had to wait more than a year to get one ourselves. On the plus side, it did drop just two days before?? my 7th birthday. Oh, what a joyous occasion that was! Thanks, parental units!

Although Game Boy itself has long?? departed as both hardware and a line entirely, the mark it left on the gaming sphere is long and deep. ??In fact, it's less of a mark and more of a geological fault line that shatters everything in its wake, leaving millions to recoil from its impact.

//twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1818678036792815780

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color have sold ??more than 118 million units worldwide combined, right up until they were discontinued in?? 2003. Even though that figure combines sales data for the original gray model and its 1998 color version (while the Color is technically the Game Boy's successor, Nintendo has always treated it more like what we would call a mid-gen refresh today), it still makes the Game Boy the fourth-best selling console of all time.

A young boy's obsession

It's tough to look back across the de??cades w??ithout some sense of nostalgia. The Nintendo Game Boy was a phenomenal success at a time when gaming as an industry was still finding its feet. But we'd had consoles in our home for some time now, such as the Atari 7800, SEGA Genesis, and Nintendo's NES. We were accustomed to playing games from our sofas and beds or sitting cross-legged on god-awful shag carpets. We were ready to move on.

And move on we did. While mobile gaming wasn't a completely new idea, the Game Boy revolutionized the concept of digital play on the go, despite its hardware limitations. In many ways, because of said limitations. It may have had a tiny screen capable of only displaying shades of green at resolutions no bigger than 160 x 144 pixels, but what it did have was Tetris.

A gray Tetris cartridge for the Game Boy on a dark background.
Image via tetris.com

Its roster of games was probably what set it apart from potential competitors. Remember, Nintendo was already flying high on the success of its home console, so the name carried weight. We knew of Super Mario, so when he got his own title on the Game Boy, that was a surefire hit. It's also worth remembering that the handheld was the springboard for Pokémon adaptations. We all know how that story goes.

Sadly, I never got into the whole Pokémon craze. But I did have some stonking games, like the aforementioned Super Mario Land, Tetris (which came bundled with the console itself), Batman: Return of the Joker, Mortal Kombat 2, and maybe some others.

Over its lifetime, the Game Boy amassed over a thousand titles, around 765 of which were on the original gray model. Obviously, my collection was barely a speck compar??ed to the sheer amount of games that were availa?ble at the time.

Some that I sadly missed out on but are deemed classics on the console include Kirby's Pinball Land, Dr. Mario, a series of Mega Man titles, Harvest Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Wario Land, and even some Final Fantasy games. Well, the Final Fantasy Legend games, at least.

Many may look at the Game Boy as a kind of conduit simply for Tetris, but the small example I've listed above lists some of the best-known names in gaming, proving that the Nintendo handheld was capable of making a huge impact? on a grow?ing industry. I sadly never had the Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance or any other variation on the OG so I missed out on even more potential classics.

Nokia who?

The G??ame Boy was not exactly a portable powerhouse of hardware supremacy. It didn't even have its own backlight, so good luck playing in the dark. However, Nintendo was able to make the most of what it had. This al?so meant the machine was not as sizeable, weighty, or pricey as some of the alternatives. While the Game Boy cost around $90 when it was released, the SEGA Game Gear was a pretty hefty $150 when it was released a year later.

The reduced hardware also meant Nintendo's device flexed a boast-worthy battery life. According to the Nintendo website itself, the original could last up to 30 hours on four AA batteries. That's 30 hours of playtime, as well, not just it being idle. Sega's Game Gear devoured battery in comparison. Even the Steam Deck's rechargeable batte??ry can't touch the Game Boy.

A burnt Game Boy sits in a glass case in a museum.
Image via Atlas Obscura

It was also a sturdy mother. I can't tell you how many years I had my Game Boy, but I almost certainly dropped it on the floor, and it kept on ticking. While it's popular to meme the Nokia 3310's alleged indestructible nature, the Nintendo Game Boy was proving its worth as a machine built to last long before Nokia. One Game Boy, which was previously on display at Nintendo New York, literally survived an explos??ion during Operation Desert Storm. The fact that it's said to ??still work feels like an alien concept in an era of planned obsolescence.

Of course, that hardiness was never really a selling poin??t, mind. We were too young to truly appreciate the structural integr?ity of technology. But to have a portable gaming console that can last for a day and a bit even through constant use and survive global conflict sort of puts the Game Boy on a pedestal of gaming greatness that I'm proud to have experienced.

The memory remains

Yes, that is a rather obscure Metallica reference. However, what I wanted to talk about was the cultural significance of the Game Boy. You mean I haven't been doing that already? Well, yes, but I thin??k there is another a??spect that's worthy of mention.

Although we've moved on somewhat over the years, video games can still be seen as a masculine hobby. Many strides have been taken, and glass ceilings have been b??roken, but it often feels like there's still a discrepancy when it comes to attitudes. When gaming started becoming a global phenomenon, girls didn't get much of a look-in.

Super Mario Land: a screenshot from the Game Boy game, showing Mario about to jump over a large block.
Screenshot via Destructoid.

When the SEGA Genesis came out, it very much aimed to appeal to young boys, with promises of action, sports, and—inexplicably—the ability to emasculate school bullies. But the Game Boy had a broader appeal. In 1995, an article in the Gainesville Sun that looked at gender disparity in gaming quoted Nintendo of America as saying that girls accounted for 46% of those who were p??laying its handheld device. That's compared to 29% for its own NES console.

The fact that nearly half the Game Boy players were female was newsworthy even then. Nintendo was ??a company that was?? leading the charge in moving away from gaming being largely a boyish pursuit.

For me, the Game Boy was the per??fect console. I know that just sounds like rose-col??ored glasses, but I was genuinely obsessed with mine. Despite not having that many games for it, I racked up hours and hours on that thing. I shudder at the thought of how much my parents had to spend on batteries (sorry, Mum).

//twitter.com/Shadowsean/status/1818679977568575661

I remember the Game Boy-shaped carry case I had for it, as well as the monstrous attachment that added a magnifying glass and light (sort of like this one, only somehow bigger). I remember running down to the arcades with my console in hand, looking for my sister so I could excitedly tell her that I'd completed Super Mario Land for the first time.

I'm not going to berate the current generation by insisting that 'we had it better in those days.' All forms of nostalgia are just desires. Desires for youth. Desires for innocence. Desires for shell suits (maybe). Or perhaps just desire to hear the Game Boy's iconic DING one more time and know that the only thing you had to worry about was which TMNT figure to ask for for Christmas.

I'm glad that I was around to experience the Game Boy, even if knowledge of its age and the fact that it was discontinued more than 20 years ago makes me feel old. But then, everything makes me feel old. I got excited the other day when our new clothes air dryer arrived (it's black!), and I no longer recognize most artists and actors who appear on Sunday morning cooking shows. Oh yeah, I watch cooking shows now. That old.

Since time immemorial (well, 1996), Quake has been a lot of people's go-to when it comes to speedrunning. Already a pretty nippy FPS, i??d Software's iconic shooter continues to draw in new players who are looking to break world records. And another one has?? just been beaten.

Over on the aptly titled YouTube channel, Qua?ke Speedruns Explained, we are treated to details about a record that's stood for nearly four years. As of May 2024, user Kisimov has achieved an eye-watering time of 22:582 seconds on the game's first (in a way) m??ap, E1M1.

//youtu.be/RqRtxlng2co

Over the course of 1?7 minutes, we get a breakdown of what it took to achieve this target, which beats the previous world record by about half a s??econd. Kisimov completed the level on Nightmare difficulty, rendering the time they got ever more impressive.

What the Quake?!

Although E1M1 is one of the shortest maps in the game, particularly as it's an early one, many speedrunners have been spending decades trying to nail down the route with perfe?ct pr?ecision. As you'll see in the video, there's a lot that can get in the way.

For a start, playing on Nightmare difficulty means there are more enemies who can deal mo??re damage with greater accuracy. Add onto that the unpredictability of their movements and you have a recipe for a frustratingly difficult record-breaking attempt.

Indeed, we get to see just a small example of the tens of thousands of attempts it took?? Kisimov to get to the end slipgate in just 22 seconds. Grunts being in the wrong place, hitscans deali??ng enough damage to kill the player, or even the geometry of the map itself all contribute to restart after restart.

It's not just the sheer tenacity in moving from point A to point B in as quick a time as possible. Along with Doom, the original Quake is pretty much the poster child for how dedicated speedrunners can be. Many commit years of their lives to fine-tuning every frame, making attempts as near to perfect as they ca?n.

This latest record which has been officially acknowledged by Speedruns.com may not seem like much, but when the QSE host delves into the minutiae of ?these 22 seconds, it becomes apparent that speedrunning is seriou?s business.

Just seeing all the failed attempts alone some of which take place in the firs??t room is enough to put a lot of people off. I don't know if I ever could get into it myself, especially given that the video analysis seems confident that no one will ever beat Kisimov's E1M1 run. Though we've heard a line like that before.

Nothing fills my blackened heart with gaming joy more than seeing relics of the past remain steadfast in this modern era. In this case, I've found a mod for Doom 2 that scratches that nostalgic itch with its implementation of a classic Mortal Kombat voice line.

In "Toasty! for Doom," ModDB user MilHouse.wad has brought the iconic announcement to id Software's legendary shooter. While playing the game, it's possible to have sound programmer Dan Forden a?nnounce his famous "Toasty!" line while battling hell demons. Certainly a fitting combinatio??n.

Doom 2: Dan Forden in the corner as a Doom monster gets exploded from a rocket.
Image via MilHouse.wad/ModDB.

This is an obvious nod to the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992, in which Forden's avatar?? would appear in th??e corner of the screen at certain points during a bout. It was glorious.

"Excellent!"

According to MilHouse.wad, in order to get him to utter his famous "Toasty!" line, you'll need to gib an enemy. So basically, just run around with a rocket launcher or the Berserk power up. Will the novelty wear off? Only time will tel??????????????????????????l.

We're unlikely to see the end of Doom and Doom 2 modding any time soon. And why would we want that? If people stopped tinkering with these FPS classics, we'd never get to see all the beautiful things people can do with the formula, such as make the game run on a toothbrush.

The original games remain an absolute triumph, paving the way for the first-person shooter genre. I realize some people are sick of hearing that, but n??ow yo?u know how your parents feel when they try to tell you how important the Beatles were.

Benjamin Franklin once said that "nothing is certain except death and taxes." Had he been alive today, he almost certainly would have said, "oh, and the other certainty is people will keep modding Doom until the end of?? time." Quite the forward thinker. Anyway, he?re's id Software's iconic FPS running on a toothbrush.

Just a few days ago, Twitter user atc1441 (thanks, Rock Paper Shotgun) uploaded a brief clip showing Doom running o??n a smart toothbrush. On the tiny screen of the Planck Mini, you can just about make the game out. The modder even goes as far as showing it being controlled by a mouse.

//twitter.com/atc1441/status/1762969015197053110

In a second tweet, w??e see they eventually managed to get it to run full-screen rather than in a small windo??w. Now we can see the thing much clearer.

Fight demons...and tooth decay

According to atc1441 ??who says their biggest passion is to "custom firmware on as many devices as possible" (no way) the toothbrush itself, "contains an ESP32-C??3 with 4MB Flash."

Using some additional downloads and a "miniwad" of Doom, they were able to compress the game down to the 4MB required for the flash. Hey presto: Doom on a toothbrush!

I don't think I'll ever get bored of the ways people can modify id's influential shooter, either tinkering with the original or getting it to run on all manner of devices. Just have a look: Doom on a robotic lawnmower, in an audio spectrogram, on a pair of earrings!

One day we're going to reach the singularity and someone will boast how they got Doom to run inside Doom. Oh, wait.

I wasn't wrong when I said that the release of Nvidia's RTX Remix toolkit would see retro games be given a bit of a spin shine. In this latest example, a modder has taken the original Unreal and injected? it with some path tracing and other visual tweaks.

The below video was spotted by DSO Gaming, and shows the 1998 Epic Games release has be?en given a bit of boost using RTX technolog??y. We see the first level of the classic FPS, as the player shows off the much brighter and bolder colored lighting. Pew pew, indeed.

//youtu.be/BQRouRaacYU

It should be noted that this is a work in progress, and it's still being tinkered with. As a result, you can see a couple of graphical glitches, particularly in the new "shiny" gun. The game was loaded into the Unreal Tournament engine.

This is what first-person shooters used to be like, kids

It would be forgivable for someone unfamiliar with the game to not be able to see what exactly has changed. Fortunately, in response to someone on Twitter, the person behind the mod, Jacob Freeman, uploaded two side-by-side screenshots, which show Unreal with RTX on and off.

It is possible ??to see a difference, even if it looks like they've just turned the brightness up a bit. As I said, this is still being worked on, so no doubt we'll see further progress and improvements.

For those who weren't around back then, Unreal was praised for its jump in FPS visuals, utilizing Epic's new engine that was named after the game. However, it would soon be left behind when Half-Life came out just a few months later. Valve's maiden release essentially stole the spotlight with its genre-shifting development techniques and storytelling methods. Unreal didn't stand much of a chance.

If you thought the days of porting Doom o?nto every possible device known to humanity were over, think again. Now, get ready to slay demons while also maintaining a neat yard. You may be a lover of violent FPS games, but you're also a responsible adult now.

If you happen to have an Automower NERA from Husqvarna, know that an update for the firmware is coming soon which will allow you to play classic Doom. Just to clarify, it won't turn your garden into the realms of ??hell. Rather, you'll be able to control it on the robotic lawnmower's screen.

//youtu.be/lp3X4IL4_UA

There's even a pretty badass trailer for it. According to the Husqvarna website, once the update is live, the game will be playable "using the robotic lawnm?ower’s onboard display and controls." You'll navigate with the control knob, while the START button will allow you to run forward.

Some caveats to consider

If you're into the horticultural lifestyle and fancy some Doom to go ??with that, this is obviously a pretty nifty update. Of course, you don't need me to tell you that you'll actually have to have one of these Automowers to begin with (which I hear ?aren't exactly cheap).

The update itself will begin rolling (ha!) out on April 9. However, it's for a limited time only, as it's only going to be available until September 9. If you do have one of these mowers, you can register for the software here.

One other th??ing to consider is that it's not being made available to all countries. According to the website, it'll be rolling out to the following markets:

United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latv??ia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Turkey, Moldova, Republic of Serbia, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland

Sadly, no U.S. update, apparently.

As influential as the original Doom games are, it'd be interesting to know how much they'd stand the ravages of time were it not for modding and unusual ports. It set the building blocks for the FPS genre back in the day, but the fact that people continue to tweak the original formula shows just how much ??of an impact the series has had these past 30 years.

Sometimes mods will even incorporate other horror franchises. Take this one that mixed Doom with Friday The 13th. Inspired. Now, here's one for us Alien lovers, in which the iconic Xenomorph creatures have made their way into id Software's ??classic shooters.

Doom 2 monsters walking around with an Aliens Xenomorph on the roof.

Brought to us by ModDB user SlegInfantryman, "Xenomorph Infestation" is an upcoming mod for both Doom and its sequel featuring a ?"fully functioning Xenomorph hive that will grow organically featuring the whole life cycl?e." We can see how the images bring the two ideas together.

Now we just need Ripley fighting imps

At ?the moment, the mod is in alpha stage, with no finalized release date yet. SlegInfantryman has said it's more for testing at this point, but it's available to download as a demo.

Here's what they have to say about it in response to ??a comme??nt on the mod page:

This is the alpha version which I was mainly using to test and make sure the Xenomorphs functioned correctly in infes?ting maps. If you run the X?enomorph infestation.pk3 alongside one of the other pk3 files included, you can watch them take over a map.

In any case, it's a bit of fun to see them running around like excitable kittens in the world of Doom. There seems to be quite a few of these mods already, w?hich suggests t??he two franchises are just natural bed fellows.

Oh, Doom. Is there any method by which you can't be ported? Evidently not, it?? seems. The latest in a near-endless attempt to get id Software's iconic FPS up and running on just about everything on the planet is one that will be m??usic to your ears. Or not, as is the case.

Over on Reddit, user wojtek-graj has made Doom completely playable...in audio. T??hat is to say, they've managed to get it to run in a spectrogram, which is a visual representation of sound frequencies. Actually, I'll let them give you the lowdown:

The game is displayed by generating an audio signal that can be viewed as a spectrogram, ?while input is taken from the microphone, with specific frequencies being mapped to specific keys.

//www.reddit.com/r/itrunsdoom/comments/1aop9xc/doom_is_playable_over_audio/

They've also made the source code available on GitHub, as well as instructions on how to play it. So if you find playing the classic way a bit too passé, th??is is at least one alternative.

It will never end

There simply isn't time in the known universe to go through all the different devices that can now run a 30-year-old shooter. Suffice it to say, it's brought out a lot of creativity in people over the years. Here, someone has been wanting to get Doom to run on E. coli cells.

With the reboot coming out in 2016 and Eternal ??launching in 2020, ??the legendary id series has truly made a comeback.

Not that it ever really went anywhere. Sure, things looked a little uncertain with Doom 3's approach to more survival horror, but seeing the OG running on a spectrogram means if nothing else fans sure aren't bored with Doom yet.

If you've played Daggerfall Unity, you'll know it's the best way to experience The Elder Scrolls 2 in the modern gaming climate. Now, with the ?full thing having recently launched, the creator of the project is looking to make their own game.

In a recent interview with DualShockers, developer Gavin Clayton said he's now working on his own idea, which will be styled after Daggerfall. He has this to say about the project:

I do genuinely love that old style of game. The thing I’m building is in the same vein. You’re talking big world, complex systems, mod support, that’s all of the stuff I want to explore, and I want to take that experience of Daggerfall Unity and put it in the new game.

Essentially, Clayton wants to realize his dream of making a game from scratch, something he's dreamed of si???????????????????????????nce he was a kid.

With some D&D influence in there, perhaps

While there are no details about what this game will actually be, he's been open to answering a few questions on Twitter/X.

For example, when asked whether he was going to be using Unity, Clayton said he's building his own engine, or, more ??accurately, he's "revived an engine I spent some years on."

As for any kind of lore or narrative, the project is still in the early s??tages, but?? when asked, the response was that the "world and main story have their roots in a D&D 2ED campaign I created and ran for friends in the 90s."

Daggerfall Unity has been an enormous task for anyone to complete, especially as it was a full remake using a different engine. It's almost certainly reinvigorated interest in Bethesda's classic RPG, and I would personally recommend anyone interested in retro Elder Scrolls games to check it out.

Along with a recent RTX Remix, the classic Tomb Raider games are about to come bac?k in a pretty big way. Aspyr has been hard at work remastering the original three entries in the iconic series, and we've been given a bit of ?a breakdown of what's to come.

A recent post on the PlayStation Blog gives us a few details on the upcoming Tomb Raider remasters, which are set to release on February 14 (ooh, la la). Going way back to 1998 when the studio helped launch the second game on Mac, Aspyr is?? more than familiar with Lara's adventures.

//youtu.be/Gm5TlIxTUHw

This modern take on the classic installments will be brimming with the usual. We'll get up-to-date controls that "take inspiration from the Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld era." However, the stud??io? will also be keeping the original tank controls for that dose of retro authenticity.

If looks could kill

Of course, it wouldn't be a remaster without some fres??h visuals that don't veer too much from the source material. The post goes on to say that Aspyr has swapped out the 2D sprites for 3D models, as well as implemented real-time lighting effects, polished environments and character models, and more.

And because this is a modern game (or at least a modern interpretation), Tomb Raider Remastered will also come bundled with a photo mode. And much like the tank controls, you can switch between the newer and classic visuals, if that's ??your bag.

It's impressive that the series is still going after almost 30 years. If you are interested in raiding some tombs from a bygone era??, the remasters will be coming to current and previous-gen consoles, as well as ??PCs.

Those who were around when the original Deus Ex released will no doubt have an appreciation for this pretty innovative RPG. While we're still not 100% sure whether a new game is in development or not, there's something interesting happenin??g with the OG.

As spotted by PCGamer, a modder is taking the 2000 Deus Ex title and putting it through an Unreal Engine 5 filter. That is to say, the quarter of a century old game is being given a bit of a boost, ?and it's all possible thanks to a toolkit called DXU24.

//youtu.be/7RCNGq8Q3s4

The software is a fan-made project that aims to convert older releases (in this case, games that run on Unreal Engine 1) into ones that run through UE5. The above video shows how far things have come, with the modder expecting to implement VR into Deus Ex as well.

A sort of new lease on life

It should be pointed out that this is not an unofficial remake or remaster of the game. The DXU24 Patreon page describes the toolkit thus:

The gen??eral idea is the original game is booted as it normally would be, and through my software, communicates with another running instance of Unreal Engine 5. Through this communication link the games state, assets, everything, is communicated to Unreal Engine 5 and reinterpreted as a modern game asset, all at runtime.

So it'll still be the original Deus Ex, but with some modern features, such ??as advanced lighting and upscaled AI. The fact that it's being filtered (I know it's more complicated than that) through Unreal Engine 5 is what makes this special.

The developer says they expect the software to work on any game that was built on UE1. Here's a recent video of it rendering a fly-through of Unreal Gold. It may even run other classics, such as Unreal Tournament or possibly Thief.

As for when DXU24 will be out, the creator is anticipating a mid-2024 release. The project has been in devel??opment for some time now, so they're hoping to launch it as soon as they can.

Resident Evil 4 being nominated for several categories at The Game Awards 2023 shows that remakes are still very much in vogue. It seems evident that we should never forget the classics. And that's exactly what this one modder is doing with the original RE2.

Perhaps in an attempt to blend modern Resident Evil with the retro installments, Itch.io user PerroAutonomo has been remaking the second game in the series. Only, they aren't updating the visuals or the cheesy dialogue. No. They're stickin??g with how the ??original 1998 release looked, but have made it into a first-person shooter.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIZxD63hR90

The above video from the YouTube channel Residence of Evil does a half hour playthrough of the demo. As for when the full thing will be released, PerroAutonomo's page says they may not finish it, and the current build "has many errors" (translated by Google).

Complete with fully remade cut scenes

The footage shows how authentic this unofficial remake is. It endeavors to keep the visual style of Resident Evil 2 but choo?ses a different perspective. We get to see a lot of the game from new angles never seen before, and even though it's a fan project, it's s?till impressive to see.

As Capcom marches forward with its iconic survival horror series, we welcome whatever's on the horizon. With more Resident Evil remakes being confirmed, everyone's going to be ??wondering which one's going to get the remake treatment next.

We may well get to see a fresh take on one of the spin-offs, such as Code Veronica or Umbrella Chronicles. Or maybe RE5 will get anot?her crack at not being a disappointment. Time will tell on that front.

The original Doom recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, making me feel quite old. As well as being an early blueprint for the FPS genre, id Software'??s iconic shooter is also a popular modding playground. Sometimes, these mods harken back to even older gaming days.

Modders Gokuma and Kontra Kommando have crafted a love letter to an absolute classic '80s slasher film. Specifically, they've turned Doom into Friday the 13th. More specifically? still, they've based it on the NES ad?aptation, turning the 1989 side-scrolling game into a first-person shooter.

Set in Camp Crystal Lake as you would expect the mod brings back Jason Voorhees to "slaughter all those that would dare to step foot" into the camp. It's up to Doomguy to stop him, presumably. Currently, there's no full release date, but you can download the current beta from ModDB to try it out.

Life before Doom

It's interesting to see this kind of mod. While it could have been just set in the Friday the 13th universe in any respect, the creators chose to breathe new life (resurrect, if you will) into a game that's even older than Doom.

A lot has certainly changed over the decades for the?? plucky FPS. Thirty years is a long time in any form of media, but to see id Software's legendary 1993 release keep coming back for more is a strong testament to just how important the game has been to the industry.

There are so many Doom mods out there, some of which change up the formula immensely, not to mention the countless ways of porting the game. There's not really anything else like it in the video game world, so hats off to the studio for brin??ging it to us.

Well, it's been about a hundredth of a femtosecond, let's see what people are trying to port Doom onto now. Oh my, would you look at that! It? appears as though it's possible to get id Software's iconic FPS t??o "run" on cells.

In a meeting of technology and biology, PhD student Lauren "Ren" Ramlan at MIT (as shared by Reddit user AnNdPh) has figured out a way to use E. coli cells to sort of run Doom. Now, I'm not scientific??ally minded, so I don't fully understand how they do it.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DnoOOgYxck

In a nutshell: what they've been able to do is tweak or modify the cells to for want of a better term turn them into monitor pixels. ?This has then allowed them to display the game in a very rudimentary way.

I hope you have half a millennium to spare

While this means the E. coli cells are technically displaying the game rather than actually running it, it's still impressive to see Doom being ported in this way.

Ren also notes that the game is only able to run at one frame every 8.33 hours. Using this figure, they estimate it would take around 600 years to complete it in its entirety. Even the likes of Skyrim can't compete with that kind of longevity.

With the original Doom recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, the legacy of the iconic shooter continues unabated. One can't help wonder where the FPS genre would be without the 1993 release, but one's thing for sure, no one's running Call of Duty on E. coli cells.

Upon its release, Doom established itself as a blueprint? for the then-new first-person shooter genre. Going on to become one of the most iconic PC games in all existence, id Software's FPS retains it?s legacy as it turns 30 years old.

To celebrate the occasion, John Carmack and John Romero both of whom played a pivotal role in the game's development reflect on their time spent working on Doom. As you can imag?ine, it holds a lot of fond memories for the pair, who some have desc??ribed as gaming's equivalent of Lennon and McCartney.

//twitter.com/romero/status/1733969723551863196

During one section of the Twitch video (which was moderated by writer David L Craddock), Carmack acknowledged that the original Doom was pretty influential in getting people in the '90s interested in PC networking. Encouraging f??ans to understand about upgrading hardware, some have even gone on to become professionals in network engineering, the pair say.

How times have changed

Having just released SIGIL II a free WAD file for Doom Romero is aware of how the game is changing all the time, thanks to a dedicated community. A few months back, he played through the MyHouse WAD, a custom story built by a fan that generated a lot of attention due to its House of Leaves-style narrative.

Of course, both Johns have seen how the industry has changed over the last three decades. While advances in AI are making it possible to have smarter enemies in games, Carmack doesn't believe it's always for the best. He said he much preferred to have the player be the focus, and intelligent enemies that have independence would not have worked in Doom.

He also laments the loss of game manuals. With how deep some releases are in terms of their lore and mechanics, it's surprising that manuals aren't still a thing. Romero even mentions Ultima 5, which has more than one.

A lot may have changed, but the legacy of Doom is unwavering. The series is still goi?ng pretty strong, but the OG releases from the '90s will always be praised due to their influence. Here's to another 30 years of demon slayin??g!

The Thief series?? has sadly been blackjacked to death, but diehard fans will always remember the original releases. Hailed as classics in the e??arly days of the stealth genre, one person has decided that the first game needed some new content.

As spotted by Eurogamer, user skacky also known as Feuillade Industries has released The Black Parade, an unofficial expansion for Thief Gold. A t??railer swoops u??s through some of the add-on's moody setting and familiar gameplay.

//youtu.be/z0gGqkbZQc0

Spending seven years in development, there's a lot of content to keep you busy if you're after some old-school Thief goodness. Here's a l?ist ?of what you'll find in the download:

  • 10 huge, open-ended and meticulously crafted missions with varied themes packed with content.
  • A brand new protagonist thrown into a dark, intricately woven story of crime and conspiracies.
  • 4 new tools happily supplied by the undermarket, at a price.
  • Many tweaks to the AI to make the game a bit more challenging but still fair.
  • A brand new "banter" system where AIs greet each other during their rounds and nightly life.
  • 28 voiced characters totaling roughly 1,800 new lines of dialogue.
  • 30 minutes of gorgeous hand-drawn briefings and cutscenes.
  • Brand new AI motions making the denizens of The City look more alive.
  • Full English subtitles.

Not playing Garrett, though

With a new story comes a new character. The creator describes The Black Parade thus (and no mention of My C??hemical Romance, either):

In The Black Parade you play the character of Hume, a hardened criminal who was sent into exile as a punishment for his crimes. The year is 833, you are now back in The City, a sprawling metropolis of soot-caked brick, greasy fumes and noisy machinery, with many a sinister conspiracy whispered behind closed doors. Lost and without a penny to your name, yo?u are back to your life of thievery and must find your old associate Dahlqui?st. Shadows and silence are your allies. Light is your enemy. Stealth and cunning are your tools. And the riches of others are yours for the taking.

It should be noted that the add-on is for Thief Gold, which was the expanded version of the original game? released in the late 1990s. It is, of cours?e, completely free to play as well.

It's been many-a-year since we had a Thief title. The last one, the 2014 attempt at a reboot, was something of a let-down. At? least with Feuillade Industries' expansion, we get to revisit the iconic stealth game.

There will almost certainly never be an end to the sheer number of things Doom can be ported to, but earrings are a new one. We've already reached the point where Doom was running inside Doom in some weird Inception-style melding (is that a dated reference??). Now, someone has managed to combine the iconic FPS with fashion.

?Streamer, "self-taught dev," and Twitter user Alina has posted a s??hort clip of herself wearing a pair of Game Boy-inspired earrings. Only these earrings can be seen playing a dinky version of id Software's classic shooter, Doom.

//twitter.com/alinalikescozy/status/1727131608342483239

This came about not long after Alina posted a tweet about how said earrings can actually be programmed to play Tetris on them. Soon after, user @zKassaiAudio set things in motion by predicting that someone would run Doom on the earrings, which is exactly what happened.

Can I get a pair?

Looking at some additional Twitter/X posts, Alina says she's using the Thumby keychain. This is a tiny gaming d??evice from a ??company called TinyCircuits, which has been designed after the Nintendo Game Boy.

Given that the Thumby is programmable, it's feasible for anyone with coding skills to put a micro version of Doom on there. As for the earrings, ??they'll need to be bought separately. It might seem like a gimmick, but it'll give you something to play whe??n your phone's out of signal.

As for the game itself, well, Doom officially turns 30 years old next month. That's longer? than some people reading this have been alive. It begs the question of how id (and?? the fans) will be celebrating its legacy. Doom fashion accessories seem like a good start.
