This time, in what Nintendo is calling "Wave 2," the set includes: Sunshine, Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. U, 3D World, and Odyssey pins. It's a clear effort to sort of capture the "modern" side of Mario, as opposed to the re??tro-tinted first wave set. It also has a new set of requiremen??ts.

Now you'll need to buy Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury to qualify, and clear 14 other Mario missions (Bowser's Fury actually counts as the 15th mission requirement). Do not listen to the "ends on April 1" expiration date, as the pins could ??go on sale before that, and could sell?? out far before that date (you will, however, get mission credit for any future requirements).

As a reminder, missions are located here. You can knock out a bunch of easy ones to net nine roughly quick mission??s; but a few of the??m are time-gated (mostly involving challenges in various Switch games) and the moment has already passed.

You still have time to participate in the Splatoon 2 Splatfest Online Challenge when it kicks off on January 15 (until January 17). You can also "sign up" to comple??te a mission. Good luck!

I'll probably be on my death bed one day talking about Club Nintendo, clutching my Mario pencil case until my last breath. It was a great thing, doling out frequent flashy physical rewards that would make a kid with a Lisa Frank binder jealous. All of t??hat died when Club Nintendo was discontinued, but Japan has been hosting glimmers of international hope with physical My Nintendo goods.

Yep, My Nintendo, the mostly digital (and mostly useless) program that took over, is getting more products in Japan. Yoshi is invading My Nintendo with physical go?ods, which ra??nge from 300-400 Platinum Points: a memo stand, a pen set and a canvas pouch. All you need to do is pay a shipping fee of 540 yen (roughly $5 US) or accrue a 5000 yen (around $45 US) shopping cart for free shipping.

All rewards are shipped domestically only in ??Japan and will arrive in late March.

Here we go!

Nintendo Account - the snappily-titled new account service f??or Nintendo - has begun rolling out in Japan.

The new membership scheme will act as a single log-in for all your Nintendo stuffs, current and future, including the Nintendo NX.

If you have a Nintendo Network ID (NNID) signed up with a Japanese Wii U or 3DS, you can head on over to the newly launched website and register now.

According to @Cheesemeister3k, it appears that your purchase history will be carried over to your new account, you'll be able to add your social?? media links, and you can "change your nickname," too.

"It looks like you can change country... #EndRegionLocking," adds Cheesemeister3k. (If you've signed up and need an English translation, Cheesemeister has you covered there, too!)

There's no word yet on when the service will?? roll-out to other parts of the world.

Until February 1, 2016, Japanese registrars will get 100¥ for every 1000?¥ spent on the Nintendo eShop (there's a spending limited of 10,000¥ per 24 hours) which will come back to you as a code around a week after your purchase(s).

Even though Club Nintendo was supposed to close forever in Europe yesterday, you can still browse the catalog and purchase items with your stars (wow, you guys still have that Luigi's Mansion 2 sta?tue?). If you go directly to the site it will s??hun you away, but that link above will grant you access.

Nintendo Life is suggesting that physical orders may be rejected as it's past t?he proper date, but digital rewards still work, and allow you to download items right now. So, purchase at your own risk, and reap the digital rewards ?while you can!

Apparently some people are also reporting tha??t due to technical issues the store has been extended until October ?8, by way of an email from Nintendo.

End of an era

For whatever reason, Club Nintendo Europe survived the purge (ha, like the movie The Purge, get it Morty?) recently, and has clung to life until this week. As of today, the s??ervice will be discontinued.

Now is the time where we really pour one out for Club Nintendo. Man I loved that service, a?nd even now, I get disappointed opening up official games and not seeing that little slip inside.

When I think of commemorative coins, I think of overpriced patriotic junk peddled during TV commercial breaks. Supplies are extremely limited. Call now! This is way better.

It's a silver-plated Club Nintendo Goodbye Coin that is up for grabs in Europe if you have 2,000 stars. We use (well, used) coins for Club Nintendo here in the States, not stars, and mine are long gone anyway. The memen?to says "thank you" in Japanese, because of course it does.

Not a bad tribute. I'm anxious for Nintendo t?o r?oll out its new loyalty program.

I'm now imagining a secret society that takes these as payment. You've seen John Wick, right?

Lest you lose them forever

Club Nintendo has been in the process of shutting down for six months now. All along the way, there have been trigger dates where it's th??e last opportunity to do something or other. The last of those is upon us, and it's time to use up any outstanding codes you have.

Today is the last day that Clu??b Nintendo codes can be redeemed on the eShop. That goes for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. When the clock strikes midnight, those codes go the way of Cinderella's pumpkin carriage -- sudden?ly useless.

Any stragglers redeeming their free games won't quite be the last of Club Nintendo; the program still has some physical rewards to ship, which will be done by the end of September. After that, Club Nintendo rides off in??to the sunset.

Nintendo's loyalty program discontinued

After nearly se?ven years, Club Nintendo has called it quits, discontinuing service in North Am??erica.

The loyalty program debuted alongside the GameCube's European launch ??in 2002 as Nintendo VIP 24:7 before coming to Japan as Club Nintendo the following year. It then arrived in Australia by April 2008, leaving North America as the lone holdout until December. Now it's the first to say goodbye.

"Our heartfelt thanks to our members for your support over the years," a note on the Club Nintendo website reads. "Please stay tuned for more information ?on our new loyalty program."

Anyone that received downlo??ad codes from the service must redeem their digital rewards ??via the Nintendo eShop before they expire on July 31, 2015. The company also notes the last round of physical rewards will be shipped by the end of September.

Club Nintendo plans to cease operations in Europe, A??ustralia, and Japan on September 30.

A new loyalty program (designed with help from DeNA, the mobile company Nintendo acquired a stake in earlier this year) is plann??ed to roll out shortly thereafter.

Anyway, so? long, Club Nintendo. It was good. Thanks for all the free ju??nk.

Onto the next iteration

If you haven't spent all your Coins yet at Club Nintendo US, now would be a good time to do so -- the service is closing forever tomorrow. It will official??ly close at 1?1:59 PM PST on June 30, 2015, so get moving!

You can get some good spending recommendations here, and reminisce about the program here. I really hope the new program doesn't suck, doesn't take a long time to arrive, and isn't obnoxiously linked to Nintendo's new mobile arm. I miss getting the little Cl?ub Nintendo inserts in my games.

Tied to new membership program

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata addressed the fact that eShop games are priced the same as their retail counterparts despite the cost savings of digital distribution. This comes from an investor briefing reported live by Nstyles and translated by Cheesemeister. According to Iwata, it's about maintaining perceived?? value, not unlike why Nint??endo retail games are almost never priced down.

"We believe download versions have the same value and should be priced the same," Iwata said. "Some com??panies price downloads cheaper due to the there being no used sales or store price reductions. We stress the value of Nintendo software, so we price the same."

Ok, but that doesn't n?ecessarily excuse why we should pay the same. Digital has convenience, physical has safer ownership (save for snapping a disc with your fat ass) and saved hard drive space. "We plan to pro??vide some benefit with the new membership service starting in the fall," Iwata added.

You may remember that Club Nintendo is closing and that Nintendo is starting a new membership program this fall co-developed by mobile partner DeNA. It, "can be deployed on multiple devices, such as Nintendo's game systems, smart devices and ??PCs." Not sure how the service could give added value just to those who buy ??digitally, though.

Club Nintendo as we know it is dead. It will return in some form but not the incarnation we know and love today, and your Coins will be dead too come?? June 30.

Consider this a reminder to redeem your Coin balance before the end of the month, or it will go to waste. Remember that Nintendo reduced the? Coin cost of many physical items recently, and there's a ton of digital stuff to pick up.

Still clinging on to your Club Nintendo account? I have a f??ew hundred Coins left -- I'll probably? wait until the last minute to spend them. All you Europeans out there now have a new set of 3DS themes to take a gander at though, starting this week.

The three themes take on various bits of Nintendo history like their portable and console lin??e (even the Virtual Boy), as well as Hanafuda cards. You can buy them for 500 Stars each (300 Stars in Australia).

Club Nintendo is going away soon (on June 30 it will be completely dead), and the publisher seems to want to rid itself of all of its physical goods quickly. A bunch of items have been slashed in price to make way for a fire sale of sorts, including the expensive Majora's Mask Messenger Bag that was ?800 coins, and is now 500 -- which I just picked up.

Club Nintendo is shutting down. The ability to accumulate coins ended alongside March's turn to April. April is the last month that Gold (300 coins) and Platinum (600 coins) members can download elite status gifts, wh??ich means to??morrow is the last day to do so if you qualify. Don't forget!

At 280 coins, I am shy of a gratis Advance Wars, and I am sad.

There are a bunch of other games for me to use my coins on, though. Regular awards available for barter u??ntil June 30. Might as well pick now and log out ??forever.

After running out of digital codes

Earlier this week we noticed that Earthbound had been removed from Club Nintendo, despite the fact that it's a digital release.

Thanks to a tip from a reader, I logged into the service this morning to find out that it had been restored, available for purchase for 250 Coins. Remember, you have until June 30, 2015 to redeem your Coins. After that everything will be lost to the abyss, when the p??rogram shuts down at 11:59 PM PST.

Nothing wil??l be carried over to the new loyalty program, so spend all your Nintendo bucks.

Pre-orders for the GameStop exclusive Ness amiibo went up last week, and it was pretty much a disast??er. GameStop.com ended up being taken offline as a result, and in-store orders took upwards of two hours in some locations due to the store's servers being completely overwhelmed. Even fans waiting second or third in line for the toy might have been shut out, as GameStop's pre-orders weren't ?organized by a store-specific allocation, and instead were divvied from a chain-wide pool. If some jerk in Tuscaloosa decided to pre-order ten Ness figures in his store, then that was ten fewer Nesses for everyone else in the country. 

Sadly, long time fans of EarthBound are used to the feeling having a door closed in their faces. From Nintendo's decision to keep Mother 3 locked to Japan, to continued reluctance to release one of the many?? ports of the games to the United Stat??es, fans of EarthBound who live anywhere other than Japan have had to grow accust????omed to not getting what they want.

The most recent case of EarthBound neglect comes from Club Nintendo. The game was initially one of the many titles made available to as part of the service's mega "going out of business" sale, alongside other SNES classics like Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Now the rewards page for the game reads "This item is unavailable??. Sorry!" That kind of "sold out!" message is u??sually reserved for physical Club Nintendo rewards, which would often disappear in a few days, but this is a download we're talking about. It's hard to understand why Nintendo blocks us from access to a endlessly replenishable digital product. 

Maybe this is just another Club Nintendo glitch? Given how unstable the site is, I wouldn't be surprised. Sadly, I think it's possible that this move was intentional. Maybe Nintendo of America is planning on releasing the EarthBound Zero/EarthBound/Mother 3 compilation on the Wii U and/or 3DS and it doesn't want too many people to download the game for "free" before it releases the games for sale in a new form? That's probably the only way fans might excuse this latest bout of anti-EarthBound antics from Nintendo at large. We'll ask Nintendo for comment on?? the situation when workers get back to the office on Monday.

They're all-digital again

Club Nintendo is coming to a close, and the ability to register any Coins ended yesterday, but there's one last swan song for the service -- the Platinum and Gold rewards. Today, Nintendo posted said rewards on their site, and they're all-digital yet again.

Platinum members can net Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Golf: World Tour, Mario Kart 7, Mario Party: Island Tour, New Super Mario Bros.2, Yoshi's New Island, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, NES Remix 2, Punch-Out!!, Pushmo World, and Ultimate NES Remix.

Gold members (as well as Platinum if you want to dip below your reward grade) have a more retro-flavored selection, with Crashmo, Freakyforms, Pushmo, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages or Seasons, The Mysterious Murasame Castle, Advance Wars, The Legend of Zelda, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Metroid Fusion, The Lost Levels, Super Mario Kart, WarioWare, Inc, or Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3.

Of course the site is getting hit pretty hard, but you'll have some time to redeem them. Confused as to what to get? I linked all of our reviews and pertinent coverage for the non-retro games above. For the Platinum level I can suggest New Leaf, New Super Mario Bros 2, (especially if you have a spouse or friend who also wants to pick it up for multiplayer or the generally sweet DLC), and Tropical Freeze.

I couldn't afford Kid Icarus: Uprising, dang it all

I'm still mentally preparing myself for a world without Club Nintendo. The long-running rewards service will no longer exist as of July 1,? 2015, but there's a much more immediate date we also need to keep in mind: March 31. That's, wow, tomorrow! Tomorrow is the final day to earn Coins, register games, and sign up for new Cl?ub Nintendo membership. Don't procrastinate.

There's a bunch of compelling games available, so be sure to scrounge up any remaining Club Nintendo leaflets you ha?ven't used, register cod??es, fill out surveys, and load up on Coins.

Note: the last day to actually redeem Coins (or access you?r Club Nintendo account) is June 30.

Club Nintendo Japan has added some new rewards including a two-disc CD soundtrack for Mario Kart 8, a Majora's Mask jigsaw?? puzzle, and a lil Bloope?r shirt. You can squeeze into it, if you want.

There's also a tentative lis??ting for another two-disc set featuring Nintendo ending / credits s??ongs.

Even if you aren't in Japan, make sure to get on your region's Club Nintendo site before the closure. I wanted Kid Icarus: Uprising (dang game has held its value well over the years) but could only afford Super Metroid for the Wii U. It's not even like I needed it, either. I was just on a kick.

Lots of great stuff in there

Nintendo dropped a bomb on us today. A delightful digital bomb of over 100 games to download off Club Nintendo in exchange for your precious Coins. The service is gearing up?? for a remodel, but b?efore then, all your Coins must go.

It's going to be hard to choose with everything on offer, but here's someth?ing to make it easier. As a general rule I'm going to skip over the Wii ga??mes that aren't directly compatible with the Wii U's interface, with one exception.

The Wonderful 101 (Wii U - 600 Coins)

I put this first because it pretty much needs to be the first game you pick up. It's one of the most original games of the past few years, and the Nintendo and Platinum partnership has definitely proven itself with titles like this and Bayonetta 2.

Seriously, why? are you reading this? Go get it now, then look at the rest.

Super Metroid (Wii U - 200 Coins)

Every year I go back and beat Super Metroid. It has a special place in?? my heart and it's not just due to nostalgia -- it's one of the best platformers ever made. With just the right amount of boss battles and a brilliantly creepy atmosphere, it's a joy to play and isn't so difficult that you're pulling your hair out deciding where to go.

If you enjoy Metroidvanias and somehow haven't played Super, this is your next purchase.

Game & Wario (Wii U - 600 Coins)

I think Game & Wario gets a bad rap. It's always been a fairly niche series, but Nintendo tried some new things with Game and some of them didn't pay off for a large amount of people. Playing it with my spouse however was a joy. We loved trying to figure ??out where all of the hidden objects are with the "Shutter" minigame, passing? the Wii U GamePad to each other when we spotted something the other didn't.

We spent hours playing Sketch with parties, and Islands with each other on the couch. Fruit is a massive hit? with friends as well, fo?rcing up to four other players to "catch" and identify one thief, who sneakily uses the GamePad to hide in the crowd.

If you have lots of friends over and an open mind, give Game a?? chance after you've picked up some of the other game??s on this list.

Doc Louis's Punch Out!! (Wii - 250 Coins)

I know what I said about non-native Wii U games, but hey, this one is exclusive! Once it's gone it's probably gone forever, and is only being offered because the service is cl?osing down.

For those of you who couldn't get into the series, you probably won't be all that impressed with what is essentially a small demo battle with one of the most iconic characters. But if you're a Punch Out!! fan, this is a piec??????????????????????????e of the franchise's history. Get it before it's gone??.

Kersploosh! (3DS - 150 Coins)

This strange game about falling down a well is something I come back to very often. Every few months or so I'll get the itch to ?beat my last high score, or try out another trinket. Your object is to basically survive until you hit the bottom, utilizing a variety of diffe?rent objects like pebbles, watermelons, or even a fragile egg.

For a mere 150 Coi?ns it's a great distraction if you're looking for something unique.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (3DS - 600 Coins)

The 3DS version of Returns eliminates the only major problem I had with the original -- forced motion controls. With a tactile setup it feels identical to the Donkey Kong Country games of old, and earning every tricky collectible is now that much more attainab??le wi?th a more direct control scheme.

The first time I booted up Returns 3D, I spent 10 hours strai?ght playing it. It's addicting as hell, and a must-have ??in your 3DS library.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (3DS - 200 Coins)

This is still among the greatest handheld RPGs of all time. Out of all of the Zelda games ever made I think this one stands up as one of the easiest to pick up and play, and the DX version makes that? even easier with a colorful new visual style.

At 200 Coins it's a steal.

Super Mario 3D Land (3DS - 600 Coins)

If you want more retail games on the 3DS (or for your upcoming shiny New 3DS), 3D Land is the perfect starting point. Nintendo really outdid itself this time, adding in plenty of new concepts withou?t resorting to a host of yawn-worthy "New" tropes.

The 3D also works great, and some of the game's environments are breathtaking, even on that tiny screen. This is easily one of my top core Mario games to this day.

Donkey Kong (3DS - 150 Coins)

I don't think anyone expected the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong to be this good. It turned? what was basically an endless arcade game into an RPG-like affair, bringing you through completely new zones and concepts.

It's still the best iteration of the classic Donkey Kong formula.

Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS - 700 Coins)

Uprising isn't for everyone, but on a personal level I consider it one of the best games Nintendo has crafted in the past five years. It's full of charm from start to finish, from the clever and adorable script to the pitch-perfect voice acting. Every member of the cast sounds like they're having fun, and a lot of that rubs off directl?y onto players.

The control scheme isn't perfect and I had to take breaks every hour or two because of cramping, but the adjustable difficulty slider is an excellent way to bring in newcomers and veteran shooters alike. With tons of twists and turns it's also exciting throughout, and a lot longer than I expected. This is one of the more expensive pickups, but if you have the extra coins and remember when Saturday morning cartoons were cool, you may find yourself falling in love with Uprising.

As I was enjoying the hunt for the Rosalina amiibo with a friend yesterday, we talked about what the new Club Nintendo would be like. But first, they have to close out their current one so we thought, "hey, wouldn't it be nice if they r?eleased all ?the previously exclusive Club games?"

Well it looks like that wish came true, as Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, originally on WiiWare, is now available on the service for 250 Coi?ns. The problem is, it also broke the site. Stay patient and k?eep trying later in the day.

It also looks like a ton of rewards have been added, both physical and digital, like Wonderful 101 for a dirt-cheap 600 Coins. Check it out!

3000 stars

Club Nintendo is closing. A new loyalty program will be coming later this year, but I really enjoyed my time with it.

The Club isn't completely dead yet though, especially in the case of the European version. The service recently added a Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds soundtrack, which you can pick up for 3000 stars. Its not a half-assed OST either, as it consists of 89 tr??acks a??nd score inserts.

Keep in mind that Nintendo said that it woul?d add a few more rewards in February as the service started to conclude. Having sa??id that, they are expected to be digital, so if you want some last-minute physical goods, this may be your huckleberry.

I miss her notes

I miss Swapnote. I mean, it's still around, but dropping SpotPass functionality has basically rendered it impotent. The thing is, even when it was fully functional, most of the messages I got came from Nikki, wh?o I al?ways assumed was a real person rather than a fictional character.

Real or not, it looks like Nikki is getting her own game, at least in Japan. Though we heard no mention of it in the North American announcement, the Japanese Club Nintendo site makes a brief mention of Nikki's Travel Quiz, which will be available for 80 Club Nintend??o points. It is not clear if Ni??kki's latest 3DS offering will make it to Western markets, but here's hoping.

Mine has to be the Mario statue

After six long years, the Club Nintendo program is ending. It's not all bad news though -- Nintendo is starting up a new program this year, and it has the potential to be better. Also, more rewards are being added in February so you can spen??d up those coins.

While the program has had its ups and downs, for the most part, I really enjoyed it in its current incarnation. As a general rule it blew anything the PSN and Xbox Live had out of the water, especially when you coupled it with the Wii U Deluxe promotion. There was just no competition with those two i??n play. Before we gear up for the new hotness though, what was your favorite Club Nintendo reward? I have to go with the 2010 Elite Status reward, the Super Mario Characters Figurine. As you can see in the header above it goes great with my Mario collection, and I'll always cherish it.

Runners up include the Gold Nunchuk and the 3DS XL charging cradle variants, just because of how much use I've gotten out of th??em. But what about you?

After more than six years, Club Nintendo is shutting down?.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing,? states, “We thank all Club Nintendo members for their dedication to Nintendo games and their ongoing love for our systems and characters, We want to make this time of transition as easy as possible for our loyal Club Nintendo members, so we are going to add dozens of new rewards and downloadable games to help members clear out their Coin balances.” 

Nintendo will add more physical rewards in February, and Flipnote Studio 3D will be free for all at that t?ime until June 30. You will not be able to create a new account after March 31. At some point this year a new loyalty program will be announced.

Thi??s is a huge shame. We've all complained about some of the bad rewards and availability of some items, but I've personally been a member since the start, and ??have earned some really cool gear over the years. I hope the new program is announced soon.

If you are anything like me, you put off registering products on Club Nintendo until months (or years) later, when they aren't worth as much. If you bought both the 3DS and the Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. and you haven't yet registered them with Club Nintendo, then today is the day to do it.

Registering both versions nets Nintendo fans a free two-disc soundtrack. Time is running out though. Today is the last day to do it. These should be shipping out some time in March of this year?. How else are you going to get free music in this day and age?

Seeking the willing to spread the word

Some Nintendo fans in Europe woke up to a surprise this morning, an opportunity for a limited "Ambassador" edition of the New 3DS handheld. The limited edition hardware bundles in an exclusive front cover plate, a pair of Super Smash Bros. cover plates, and a charging cradle for £179.99. It can be ordered, if you qualify, through Club Nintendo.

This announcement has caused some confusio??n, owing to the use of "ambassador," the same term Nintendo used in their placation of pre-price drop purchasers of the original 3DS. Members of that "Ambassador Program" (which awarded Virtual Co?nsole titles to qualifying 3DS owners in 2011) are not necessarily eligible to buy the new hardware, as Nintendo has extended the offer only to, "selected Club Nintendo members."

No word yet if a similar offer is being extended to Club Nintendo members in other regions, though it seems likely we won't be wai??ting long to find out. The European offer expires on J??anuary 12.

Your stars will return

Yesterday the Club Nintendo service in Europe was having some issues. In addition to downtime, some users are reporting that their stars (coins in the US version) are ?not appearing in their account.

Nintendo has noted that although the downtime problem is solved, you may not see all of your stars back yet. If they are era??sed, don't panic! The publisher will apparently return them to your account soon. Some users are reporting to us that everything is all good, but a few are still having trouble, so just give it some time before logging in again.
