Certainly, erudite fans know that the House of Ideas contains one of the most comprehensive caches of haunting stories, ready to sate their thirst for the macabre and monstro?us.

Therefore, with three-plus decades of literary training, I've meticulously identified the ?crème de la crème of Marvel's Hallow heap. These terrifyingly spooktacular reads pay homage to Halloween's traditional elements and celebrate the ghoulishly delightful melding of Marvel and the? things that go bump in the night.

Tomb of Dracula (2004)

In this utterly spooktacular ?read, Marvel's resident vampire slayer extraordinaire goes toe-to-toe with his most bitter rival, the lord of the Vampires, Dracu??la. Teaming up with a ragtag team of vampire hunters featuring Noah Van Helsing and Divinity Drake, Blade must guide the team deep into Castle Dracula on a suicide mission to prevent his divine ascension.

Arguably the best story featuring these two perennial foes, Tomb offers a detailed hist??ory of vampiric lore in Marvel. Notably, the foreboding, ominous tone feels perfectly set amongst the betrayals and twists in this Halloween must-read spotlighting Marvel's nosferat?u and the heroes that oppose them.

Giant-Size Wolverine (2006)

A gritty, visceral tale starring everyone's favorite crazy canuck, Giant-Size Wolverine shows one of Marvel's scrappiest heroes ?in a dire spot. After barely surviving a battle with a Hydra robot, a strange young girl finds Wolveri??ne near death. As she provides him with medical aid, the townsfolk and Hydra gather to attack the "alien" and finish the job.

Appropriately titled 'House of Blood and Sorrow,' this macabre read nails the ominous, desolate feel. Lastly, with a lone dark house among acres of farmland and monsters abound, Giant-Size Wolverine is a most spooktacular Marvel comic ??worth the read this Halloween season.

Legion of Monsters (2007)

A dreadful host of horrific one-shots, Legion of Monsters takes readers into the darkest parts of the human psyche, creatively melded with?? these iconic Marvel monsters. In particular, thes??e stories depict the tragedy of monstrous afflictions and how these tortured souls balance humanity against the natural order that bore them.

By artistically tackling issues such as drug addiction, zealotry, and the eternal battle of love versus hate, Legion of Monsters challenges the traditional view of monsters, yielding realizations that haunt t??he imaginatio??n more than the monsters themselves.

Hulk Monster-Size Special (2008)

A menacing, monster-filled one-shot, Hulk Monster-Size Special features the gamma goliath Hulk locking horns with a cadre of horrific hellions. In this spooktacular must-read, Hulk will test his strength against Frankenstein, savagery against Werewolf by Night, and wits against Dracula in?? a monstrous throwdown for the ages.

No Halloween must-read list would be complete without deference to Mary Shelley's iconic patchwork monster. This mash-up of the Punisher Frank Castle and Frankenstein is born when Morbius finds Frank eviscerated following the events of the must-read arc 'Dark Reign' and "saves" him.

Introducing a scary twist on these literary creations and creatively hinting at adages like judging a book by its cover, the talented team of Remender and Moore craft a noteworthy Halloween entry. Undoubtedly, Franken-Castle is a blood-soaked cult classic that empha??tically stamps its place among the most spooktacular Marvel comics.

Dracula (2010)

Here, comic vets Thomas and Giordano strike the mark in this captivating adaptation of Stoker's timeless horror epic. Colored for the first time?, this engaging take on Vlad Țepeș perfectly encapsulates the count's undying evil with flowing prose and art. The result is a haunting read that forgoes the novel format, instead ??using easier-to-digest comic panels and yielding a Halloween chef-d'oeuvre.

Marvel Zomnibus (2012)

Doing the iconic monster justice and representing just what the doctor ordered for legions of hungry fans, the Marvel Zomnibus features the ravenous events from Earth-2149.  This Earth, known as Plane??t Z, was ov??ertaken by a zombie virus that slowly infected the entire planet, turning hero and villain alike into voracious undead.

After running out of food, the zombified heroes form the Galacti collective, traveling throughout the universe, devouring planet by planet. Complete with fan faves as zombies, multiversal shenanigans, and an all-encompassing, unsatiable hunger for living flesh, the Zomnibus offers anything a comics fan could want for a haun??ting good t??ime.

The Immortal Hulk (2018)

Taking the emerald behemoth back to his monstrous roots is the Eisner-nominated run, The Immortal Hulk. This certifiable bordello of blood centers around the premise that?? the Hulk is immortal, forever rising after sunset and ready to SMASH any unlucky enough to draw his ire.

Filled with insightful dialogue and introducing the terrifying One Below All, this entry brings the monster lurking beneath the surface to vivid realization. Undoubtedly, with its prevailing undead themes and pulpy noir art, the Immortal Hulk is a treat for Marve??l fans this Halloween season.

Werewolf by Night (2023)

A frightful tale showcasing two of Marvel's cinematic Halloween characters, Werewolf by Night feels right at h??ome as a spooktacular must-read. The tale picks up with Jack Russell and the scarlet-haired monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone infiltrating the c??astle of Doktor Nekromantik, an archfiend and dark sorcerer plaguing the populous with his dark ambitions.

Ultimately, they m??ust work together to survive Nekromantik's ghoulish creations, the demonic spirit Khabarian, and their natures in this haunting read.  In particular, the savvy art choice sets the tone, paying homage to the character's cinematic beginnings and acknowledging ??the colorful additions Marvel has made along the way.

Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood (2023)

Capitalizing on fan reception from the widely popular Marvel Zomnibus comics, Marvel returns to the title in the goriest of fashions with Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood. This trichromatic trek back into the aftermath of another Earth, ravaged by a necromantic virus, takes a more focused approach than its predecessor, focusing on the zombie plague's dire??ct impact? on Marvel's heroes.

Featuring a host of Marvel's elite, like Spider-Man, Daredevil, and the First Steps family, the Fantastic Four, Black, White & Blood?? depict?s the extreme toll the descent of civilization takes on its most ardent defenders. Whether you're looking for a battle of Egyptian deities and their undead avatars or a S.H.I.E.L.D. battle for the ages, this gorefest is perfectly apropos for this haunting season.

With Dragon Age: The Veilguard just around the corner, now might ?be the time to revisit the world of Thedas and br??ush up on the ancient lore of the Chantry and the old gods that preceded it.

If there's one thing BioWare always does in the superlative, it's worldbuilding. The world of Dragon Age, while certainly inspired by many fantasy works that came before it (including Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time—especially the?? latter) is sprawling with riveting stories, compelling charac??ters, and a fantastic history going thousands of years back.

Dragon Age has also branched out into other mediums over the years, comprising not only three amazi?ng games with dozens of hours of content, but also several books, more than ten comic series, a few tabletop games, and?? recently, an anime adaptation on Netflix.

But as we know, the beating heart of every great fantasy universe is in its books. Even Dragon Age, originally conceived as a video game series and despite taking full advantage of RPG elements to world-build, can't help but fall under the same enchantment. If you want lore and details, you'll have to inevitably approach the Dragon Age books and comics, and since most of them have been written by BioWare's own writers who?? als??????????????????????????o worked on the games, they are must-reads for ardent fans of Thedas.

Barring the two-volume World of Thedas, which is little more than a companion encyclopedia with entries detailing different characters, factions, countries, and events, here is every Dragon Age book and comic ranked worst to best.

All Dragon Age Books

There have been seven major books in the Dragon Age series, all of them canon. Some expand on the lore already established in the games, and some give fans much-needed context on the inner workings of Thedas and what goes on behind the scenes in this politically-charged high fantasy world. Here we’ve ranked them from worst to best based on? significance, the quality of the narrative, and the overall community reception.

7. Dragon Age: Hard in Hightown

We all know that Varric is an accomplished and best-selling author renowned across Thedas, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to read a book penned by him? Hard in Hightown expands on the character’s noir detective story found in the Dragon Age: Inquisition codex entries, and BioWare has also marketed the book as being written by Varric himself. The other contributing author is Mary Kirby, who worked in the studio from 2006 to 2023 and is credited for her writing chops in all four Dragon Age games, including the upcoming Veilguard.

6. Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne

The first novel by David Gaider as well as the first Dragon Age book, The Stolen Throne takes place before the events of Origins in the country of Ferelden. We follow the tale of the rebel queen Moira, who has just been assassinated through a plot orchestrated by the nobles in her court. Her son Maric escapes unharmed, and now with Ferelden under occupation by the Orlesian Empire, Maric has to fight for the revival of his nation with the help of Loghain, whom fans will recognize as one of the main characters in Origins. If you always found Loghain intriguing and were desperate to learn more about his past and motives, then The Stolen Throne is a must-read, even if it’s not exactly the best Dragon Age book out there.

5. Dragon Age: The Calling

Taking place eleven years after the events of The Stolen Throne, this is David Gaider’s second literary outing in the Dragon Age universe. The story chiefly revolves around the Grey Wardens, who had been exiled from Ferelden for 200 years, before King Maric revoked that ban and welcomed them back. The Grey Wardens come to the king’s court with dire news, however, of one of their rank escaping into the Deep Roads and aligning himself with the Darkspawn. The Grey Wardens ask the king to lead them through the Deep Roads, which he traversed years before, to save the kingdom from peril, little realizing the dangers that lurk in these uncharted ?dwarven territories.

4. Dragon Age: Asunder

The Mage-Templar War is one of the defining conflicts in the entire Dragon Age chronology, and it is explored in depth in Dragon Age: Asunder by David Gaider. This is arguably the author’s best novel in the series, and his nuanced storytelling, whether it be compelling character arcs or even a deft hand at weaving political intrigue together, shines in Asunder. Other than explaining in detail why the Seekers of Truth and the Circle of Magi broke off from the Chantry, the story also features Wynne, who is one of the fanbase’s favorite companions in Origins.

3. Dragon Age: Last Flight

Last Flight by Liane Merciel is arguably one of the best stories in the multi-media Dragon Age franchise. The narrative once again brings the Grey Wardens to the forefront. After the events of Origins, this ancient group of warriors are once again being hailed as heroes across Thedas. The Darkspawn has been driven underground and the threat of extinction has been snuffed out. Not all is well in the continent, however. A young elven mage named Valya, who has recently been recruited into the organization, is tasked ??with studying historical records to gain insight into previous Blights, research that leads her to question what she knows about the so-called her?oic Grey Wardens and learn the truth about the fate of griffons.

2. Dragon Age: The Masked Empire

Trick Weekes wrote for the three Mass Effect games as well as Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and the forthcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The Masked Empire is a tie-in novelization for Dragon Age: Inquisition released in April 2014, and it deals with the Orlesian Civil War. The events of the novel paint a starkly different picture of Orlesian politics for fans, and many of you might end up regretting the decisions you made during Inquisition, or replaying the game so that you can change it. Some of the characters in The Masked Empire include Briala, Celene Empress of Orlais, Felassan, Gaspard de Chalons, and o?ur own bard-turned-spymaster Leliana.

1. Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights

Tevinter Nights is an anthology series written by nine different BioWare staff writers, and some fans already consider it to be a tie-in to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You’ll find many familiar faces in the course of reading this novel, which consists of fifteen short stories mostly set in the Tevinter Imperium, as well as other areas like Nevarra, Rivain, the Anderfels, Orlais, and the Free Marches. The novel also goes into events such as the Qunari invasion and Solas�?defection from the Inquisition. If you don’t want to bother with the rest of the Dragon Age books before The Veilguard, Tevinter Nights can thrust you back into the political and historical landscape of Thedas before the fourth main entry comes along.

All Dragon Age Comics

Dragon Age has maintained a steady and prominent line of comic strips since the release of Origins in 2009. Some might even argue that because Dragon Age is a video game, comics are an even more congruent medium for expansion. There are close to a dozen comic b?ook series in Thedas, and we’ve ranked them all in this list. Here are ??which publications you should prioritize before October 31.

8. Dragon Age: Until We Sleep

This three-issue comic series focuses on Varric and gives fans more insight into his past life. It is written by David Gaider and illustrated by Chad Hardin, featuring amazing artwork and a grim story that chooses BioWare’s own canon, meaning that in Until We Sleep’s timeline, Alistair is the king of Ferelden.

7. Dragon Age

There's something irresistibly charming about the first proper Dragon Age comic strip, which came out monthly in 2010 in six issues. The story expands on the lore already established in Origins, and deals with the inner workings of both the templar and mage orders in Thedas. The art style is very unique, perfectly fitting that dark aesthetic the franchise had going for itself back in the old days, even if there are also lore inconsistencies abound, something t?hat eagle-eyed fans will no doubt pick up on with ease.

6. Dragon Age: Magekiller

Released in five issues from December 2015 to April 2016, Magekiller tells the story of Marius, the titular mage killer, and his handler Tessa Forsythia. It’s set during the events of Inquisition and centers around the rise of the Venatori cult. The art style is pretty neat, but for pacing issues as well as a shallow storyline, Magekiller often finds itself very low in the list of fan-favorite Dragon Age stories.

5. Dragon Age: Those Who Speak

Following the events of The Silent Grove, King Alistair continues to travel across Thedas to learn what happened to his father. On this journey, he's assisted by everyone's favorite pirate Isabela, an?d second-favorite novelist Varric Tethras. The journey is wrought with danger, but noth??ing that the trio can't handle, especially when you realize that they've been through worse than a band of cultists hindering their way.

4. Dragon Age: Wraiths of Tevinter

This is actually a compilation of three Dragon Age comic series released in a single volume. It includes Deception, Blue Wraith, and Dark Fortress, all involving the Tevinter Imperium to one degree or another. In Deception, we follow a failed actress turned con artist who targets the heir of a wealthy family in Tevinter. The second and third series are more closely linked, with the former dealing with a Qunari plot against Tevinter and featuring Fenris, and the latter starring her as the main character as she's joined by a band of Inquisition agents to assault a seemingly impregnable fortress. All great short stories in the sprawling Dragon Age universe.

3. Dragon Age: The Silent Grove

The first Dragon Age comic series to be published by Dark Horse, and arguably one of the best even now, The Silent Grove depicts the Alistair, Varric, Isabela trio in another era-defining adventure. The party travels to Antiva City, and there they attempt to stage a prison break, getting swept up in a tale that ends up unveiling one of the darkest secrets in the history of Thedas. The Silent Grove was originally published in 2012 in six issues.

2. Dragon Age: Knight Errant

What is a Dragon Age story without the universe's meta storyteller around to shake things up? Knight Errant is the tale of an elven thief named Vaea, who arrives in Kirkwall just in time to witness the appointment of its latest viscount, Varric Tethras. The artwork in Knight Errant is very enthralling, and you'll find yourself drawn to look at the pages even if you're not a fan of the story itself. Still, there have been theories in the community circles about Knight Errant possibly tying into The Veilguard, so the title is w??orth picking up for that reason alone.

1. Dragon Age: The Missing

The Missing directly ties into The Veilguard and features Varric Tethras and Lace Harding (who is going to be a companion in the upcoming game) as they descend into the Deep Roads in pursuit of Solas. We already know Solas and his shenanigans are going to play a huge part in The Veilguard, and The Missing not only serves as a story that bridges the gap between this fourth entry and Inquisition, but also a perfect primer to get you into the mood for some Dragon Age in November.

The first full appearance of Eddie Brock as Venom. Downtrodden and desperate, disgraced reporter Eddie Brock seeks an escape in church??. Wavering between anger and shame, Eddie laments where his life went awry. Ultimately, Eddie erroneously blames Spider-Man for his current situation, believing Spidey's apprehension of the Sin-Eater was the ca??talyst for his downfall.

Here, in Eddie's darkest moment, the alien symbiote Spider-Man rejected following the Doom best Secret Wars (1984) finds him. Then, fueled by shared anger towards Spider-Man for slights, real and imagined, Eddie and the symbiote bond profoundly. Notably, this series shows a paternal Venom as he tries to save his recently spawned "grandchild" from Carnage. Throw-in appearances by Black Cat and Spider-Man and Venom vs Carnage checks all the boxes.

After Spider-Man intervenes, things turn epic as Venom interacts with Eddie's blood, resulting in the birth of Anti-Venom, Venom's fatal antithesis.

A popular, genre-spanning symbiote variation, Anti-Venom, is a powerful combination of residual Venom symbiote and Mister Negative's Lightforce energies. This amalgamation is deadly corrosive to most symbiotes, making him their natural counter, potentially valuable intel for the symbiote battles on tap in The Last Dance.

Venom: Dark Origin (2008)

Venom: Dark Origin represents the preeminent tale of Eddie Brock and his journey toward his fateful encounter with the Venom symbiote. Dark Origin vividly depicts his early life, where the loss of his mother during childbirth left Eddie yearning for love he would never get. Venomverse Saga (2017)

Introducing the Poisons, a parasitic alien race hell-bent on conquest, Venomverse is a quality saga on the Venom symbiotes scattered throughout the Marvel Universe. A variant lovers' dream, Venomverse features venomized versions of iconic?? character??s like Captain America, Deadpool, Dr. Strange, and Wolverine.

In a rarity for Marvel, Venomverse also features Venom teaming up with a Carnage variant, brought together to save symbiotes across the multiverse. The ferocity of this father-and-son duo gives glimpses of the destructive power of a potential alliance, one many fans like myself would love to see in Venom 3.

Venom Inc. (2017)

Venom Inc. is a quick-paced and informative tale with Grand Theft Auto-esque vibes that deftly weaves?? in secondary characters impacted by Venom, like Andi Benton and Lee Price, with Eddie Brock, Peter Parker, and Flash Thompson. Indeed, all had their lives irrevocably changed by the Venom symbiote, yet harbor vastly different feelings towards it.

These differing opinions lead to a host slugfest with Spider-Man vs. Venom vs. Anti-Venom vs. Maniac and his Inkling famiglia. Introducing the evil Maniac symbiote, a new take on a beloved variation, and showcasing the indelible bond Eddie and Venom will share "to the end," Venom Inc. honors Venom's impact on many lives.

Venom: First Host (2018)

Fans looking for more history on the Venom symbiote before its comic debut on Battleworld, I've got a Venom best for you. Wrapped in engaging prose and bright visuals, Venom: First Host offers a candid look into Venom's past. During a war with the Skrulls, Kree infiltrator Tel-Kar encounters Venom, bonding with it to further?? viol?ent wartime mandates.

After escaping his decades-long torture, Tel-Kar heads to Earth to retrieve the symbiote, hell-bent on revenge. Here, readers encounter the juvenile symbiote Sleeper, a unique variation with a sensory skill set that becomes Dylan Brock's feline. Venom: Rex (2018)

Kicking off his world-class Venom run, scribe Donny Cates further expands on symbiote lore with this foundational Venom read. Found in Venom (2018) #1-6, the Rex story arc illuminates critical history linking Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D., the symbiotes, humanity, and the sudden?ly manic Venom.

King in Black, arguably Venom's best story, sees him lock horns with the primordial symbiote god, Knull. Truly an emotionally charged tale taking Venom full circle, King in Black honors Venom's Lethal Protecto??r roots decades later as he risks everything in the battle versus Knull.

As the latest trailer revealed, The Last Dance will bring the Lord of t??he Abyss to the big screen, and from all indications, it looks to follow this iconic source? material. Ultimately, even the film's title, taken from a heartfelt conversation between Eddie and Venom, is an homage to this acclaimed series that any ?comic should check out.

Red Light Properties follows Jude an?d Cecilia. When they meet, sparks fly, and their future as an estate agency called Red Light P??roperties begins. Cecelia is the real business brain behind the operation. She manages their lives, including raising their child, getting in clients, pushing through every sale, and generally keeping life held together.

So what does Jude do? Well, he's got the ability to see dead people, and since it's previously haunted houses that Red Light Properties specializes in, he's got to keep up his end of the bargain and clear houses of spirits so they can be sold on the cheap to those who couldn't afford one otherwise. To do this, he needs to stay topped up on psychedelics, but that leaves him somewhere between reality and The Membrane that separates the ph??ysical world from the spiritual one. You can see how that could be a problem as a business partner, father, and husband, right?

Those who have followed the series for a while may know some of the stories included in this upcoming omnibus. "Goodnight Donnie Cheng," "Underwater," and even "Tight Shorts," which? never made it off of Comixology, will all be included.

With the recent D23 trailer teasing the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Thunderbolts* movie, fan anticipation is trend?ing upwards. Encapsulating the team mantra "Justice, Like Lightning," the 'Bolts have enjoyed popularity since their inception. Founded as a team of anti-heroes in a world that sorely needed them, the 'Bolts straddle the lines of g?ood and evil, often settling somewhere in the middle.

Hence, while featuring numerous team line-ups since its inception, the 'Bolts have played a pivotal role in Marvel comics. Luckily, many fans, myself included, believe the 'Bolts will eventually become the MCU equivalent of Marvel's Dark Avengers. Therefore, utilizing decades of comic source material, I've hand-picked the best Thunderbolts comics to read before Thunderbolts* hits theaters in April 2025.

Thunderbolts (1997) Annual

After the harrowing events of the Onslaught saga, with most heroes deemed K.I.A. and the villains running rampant, Thunderbolts' 97 Annual introduces fans to a newly formed team. Adopting the team motto and tactical approach of "justice, like lightni?ng," the Thunderbolts offer former criminals a shot at redemption throu??gh public service.

As details slowly emerge about The Fantastic Four: First Steps, fans are hopeful the Marvel Cinematic Universe captures the essence of Marvel's first superhero family. After all, the Fantastic Four remains one of the longest and most beloved runs in all comics.

After cosmic rays endowed them during a space expedition, Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Susan Storm), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm) form the Fantastic Four. Taking into account the Fantastic Four's rich and lengthy Marvel history, I've turned 30+ earth cycles of comic knowledge into this list of the best comic books to read before Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Fantastic Four (1961) #1

Debuting in the fall of '61 as imaginative conce?ptions from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four would debut and for?ever change Marvel history. Weakened due to hunger and looking to feed, Galactus returns to Earth. But, after teaming up with the Avengers to take him down, the Fantastic Four quickly realize their most formidable adversary is dying. Here??, the Four will honor their oath to help others in need, even if the one i??n need is the planet devourer Galactus.

Importantly, FF #244 signals the Human Torch's ex-lover Frankie Raye's run as Galactus' herald. A decidedly different herald than the Silver Surfer, Raye lacked her predecessor's nobility and even temperament. Thus, with rumors of a female Surfer-esque antagonist in First Steps, it's likely an adaption from Raye's fiery run as Galactus' herald??.

Fantastic Four (2001) 1234

An edgy noir series by acclaimed scribes Grant Morrison and Jae Lee, Fantastic Four: 1234 gives a moody take on the primal facets of the Fantastic?? Four. Always looking to best Reed and earn his retribution, Doom constructs a doomsday machine, playing on fears and insecurities innate in humans.

Consequently, Doom dissects Thing's perpetual war with his rocky aesthetic, Torch's selfish, daredevil compulsions, Susan's issues from a lack of intimacy, and Reed's unrelenting need to fix everything. In conclusion, 1234 is a comic that alludes to character weaknesses Doom may exploit in the MCU's Fantastic Four: First Steps and beyond.

FF (2011) #1

Shattered after the death of the Human Torch, the Fantastic Four becomes Three as they wrestle with their loss. Yet, unlike previous stretches, when they add an extra member, the remaining members disband out of respect for Torch's sacrifice. Eventuall??y, the team honors the Torch's memory by ??creating the Future Foundation.

Brandishing spiffy new dichromatic uniforms and appropriately using the same FF initials, the remaining trio adds the award-winning Spider-Man, Peter Parker. Lastly, with an onus on the future and supported by Franklin and Valeria Richards, their grandfather Nathaniel, and Doctor Doom, the Foundation is another Fantastic creation that may find a home in the MCU.

Secret Wars (2015) #1-9

Following the Beyonder's use of the Incursions in their attack on the multiverse, the trio of Doom, Dr. Strange, and the Molecule Man stand in defiance?. Enacting their master plan, the Beyonders are defeated as Doom usurps their power to save all reality, becoming God-Emperor and creating Battlewo??rld.

Unquestionably a chief RDJ Doom comic read, Secret Wars (2015) is top-notch storytelling and embodies the main storyline upcoming in the MCU. Whether Hickman's flowing prose or Ribic and Svorcina's indelible artwork inspires intrigue, Secret Wars checks all the boxes as an essential Marvel read before Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Fantastic Four (2018) #1

This comic picks up with the Human Torch and the Thing attempting to reconcile the "loss" of Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, and Franklin and Valeria after the incursions of Secret Wars (2015). Notably, Fantastic Four #1 alludes to the potential look of the MCU following Avengers: Secret Wars.

Presenting a heartwarming finish to a nearly two-year period of separation, #1 depicts the impact of expectancy and despair in heroes' daily lives. The newest trailer for Venom: The Last Dance gave us our first look at the film's vill??ain, and it's not another of Venom's children. In the final chapter of his titular trilogy, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) faces off against Knull,? Lord of the Abyss and creator of all symbiotes.

If you're a Marvel Comics fan, you already know why the sound of his name was enough to make the Venom Symbiote want to peel themselves off Eddie's skin. If you don't know who Knull is, worry not! I'm here to tell you everyt??hing you ne??ed to know about Marvel's most terrifying deity and what his introduction could mean for Sony's Spider-Man universe.

The tale of Marvel's Knull

Knull is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel universe, fully debuting in 2018 within the pages of Donny Cates' Venom. This is ironic, since Knull is one of the oldest beings in the Marvel Universe. Born from the primordial darkness sandwiched between each iteration of the cosmos (Marvel lore is wild), Knull is the embodiment of the void, and in classic ??dark god fashion, all he wants is to bask forever in the infinite blackness he spawned from.

Unfortunately for Knull, his eternal slumber ended abruptly when the deific Celestials began laying down the framework of the universe. As the god of nothing, Knull looked at things like color, warmth, and dreams, and said, "Yeah, I'm not about this." So he did what any rational eldritch horror would do: create a living sword from his shadow and declare war on everything.

With the newly-forged All-Black, the Necrosword, Knull decapitated the first Celestial he saw, becoming the universe's first murderer. Armed with the raw, cosmic power of the Celestial's head, Knull brought an army of dark dragons to life, linked to him through an intricate hive mind. These dragons would become the first ge?neration of Symbiotes, and Knull used them to drown galaxies in darkness and bring entire pantheons of gods to ??their knees.

After untold eons, Knull's campaign came to a screeching halt when one of his dragons made its way to Earth in the Middle Age??s. This dragon, Grendel by name, crossed paths with a yo??ung Thor and got a face full of Mjolnir for its troubles. The electricity from Thor's blow rippled up the Symbiote hive mind, hitting Knull head-on and knocking the Lord of the Abyss into a coma.

Free from their tyrannica?l progenitor's influence, the Symbiotes sealed Knull away within the core of his throne world, which they would name "Klyntar." Despite the Symbiotes' best attempts to erase any lingering trace of Knull from the universe, their efforts would ultimately be in vain.

S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually unearthed Grendel's remains and used them to create a platoon of Symbiote-bonded super-soldiers. Grendel's return kicked off a series of Symbiote-related events, culminating with Knull's resurrection at the hands of Cletus Kasady. Knull launched an all-out symbiote invasion of Earth in the 2020/2021 King in Black crossover event, in which the Lord of the Abyss finally met his end at the hands of a divinely powere?d Eddie Brock.

Knull's debut in Venom: The Last Dance could save Sony's Spider-Verse... or destroy it

Knull is one of the most potent threats ever to menace the Marvel universe, and I'm honestly surprised he's showing up in Venom 3. Hardy's spent most of his tenure as Venom fighting other Symbiote hosts, and Venom 3's first few trailers made it look like that pattern could continue. If my earlier summation didn't clarify it enough, Knull's anything but "?another Symbiote villain."

With deific strength, a healing factor, and command over a legion of Symbiotes, Knull's easily the most powerful villain to appear in Sony's Spider-Verse. He fought gods and won countless times, and his ability to control Symbiote in the universe means he always has an intergalactic army at his beck and call. With that much??? power at his command, Knull could become the Big Bad the Sony Spider-Verse has needed for a while.

However, while I am excited to see what Kelly Marcel does with Knull in Venom 3, I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little worried. Knull was a slow-burn villain in the comics, giving readers plenty of time to stew in dread and morbid curiosity before the foretold "God of the Symbiotes" finally appeared. If there's one thing a villain of Knull's scale deserves, it's a good amount of build-up, and the previous two Venom movies didn't? mention him at all. It'd be a shame to see the mystique and mor??bid majesty of Knull restricted to a single film, even if it is a series-ending threequel.

A tweet from Alec Perez of My Cosmic Circus implied Sony has big plans for Knull, so Venom 3 may not be the last time we see?? the God of the Symbiotes. We'll have to wait until the movie comes out on October 25th to find out.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: The Land of Giants issue #1 in August 2024 and further explored the Borderlands universe through its versions of D&D, Bunkers & Badasses, just as Tiny Tina's?? titular game did. Now, we have five pages from the second issue, which will be released on September 18, 2024, to show you.

In the first issue of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: The Land of Giants, we were introduced to the colorful cast of characters and read about their escapades in a brand new story that Tiny Tina's put together for them. After a short side quest, the party finds themselves in Boomstone, where a hill giant named Hilly the Kid has been causing a bit of a ruckus. That's where we left off, and the first five pages of issue 2 pick right up from that point. Tr??ust me when I say you're going to want to read about how the party helps Hilly the Kid calm down.

Below, I've showcased all five of the pages that Dark Horse Comics provided for us to reveal in this exclusive preview to fans. As I said, take your time to read through them because you'll see how this is a true Borderlands story plucked directly from Tiny Tina's mind.

As you can see, the story takes a pretty wild turn. While the party is trying to figure out what they can do about Hilly the Kid, they get lost in a haircut competition, and everything goes a bit off the rails. This fits the vibe of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and its quirky twist on Dungeons & Dragons beautifully.

The main quest is never the main quest for long with Tiny around. The world state can change in an instant, and the party often doesn't hav?e a choice when it comes to the zany side quests because they almost always end up doing whatever Tina wants them to do.

Tales to Astonish (1959) #63

'A Titan Rides the Tra??in,' by legendary creators Stan L?ee and Steve Ditko, gives fans the origin story of Samuel Sterns. A high school dropout and lowly plant worker, Sterns yearned for the adoration heaped upon genius until a freak gamma explosion altered his fate. This accident would birth the Leader, a hyper-intelligent, megalomaniacal mastermind.

Yet, unlike Bruce Banner, whose repressed rage manifests into the brutish Hulk, Stern's intense desire to be among the intellectual elite supercharges his brain. Here, the Leader becomes one of the Hulk's longest-tenured and most formidable adversaries, setting the stage for his appearance in Brave New World.

Captain America (1969) #117-119

Unsurprisingly, their first MCU adventure is full of foul language, violence, fourth wall breaks, and drama, in addition to some big surprises.

Deadpool & Wolverine makes no bones about the fact that?? its a Multiverse story, with the presence of the Time Variance Authority and copious multiversal variants present in the film's marketing driving this point home. Among the many versions of the Merc with a Mouth teased in promotional material, one stands out as especially sweet and absolutely adorable. Well, depending on who you ask. Yes, we're here today to shine a deserved spotlight on the one and only Dogpool, as portrayed by Peggy, a pug-Chinese crested mix.

Through the cuteness of Peggy and the anticipation for Deadpool & Wolverine, some might be surprised to know that Dogpool's journey to Hollywood has been ??decently long, and that the character's casting has some fun twists and turns to it. So, in honor of the four-legged mercenary's big screen debut, he?re's a look back on Dogpool's voyage from print to Hollywood prominence.

Dogpool has existed in the Marvel Comics universe for years

Though the Multiverse has been a present element in Marvel Comics lore for decades, the existence of Dogpool in the multiversal canon is a relatively recent development. Wilson of Earth-103173 debuted in 2010 via Prelude to Deadpool Corps #3, with subsequent comics explaining where he comes from and how he became? his world's Deadpool equivalent. It all started when he was used as an animal ?test subject for an experimental mascara, Mascara X, which severely disfigured him and granted him a healing factor. The casting of Peggy for Deadpool & Wolverine

In short, Dogpool is a legend. Sure, the character doesn't get a lot to do during his tenure in Marvel Comics, but what's not to love about the combination of Deadpool and a dog? Therefore, when bringing the puppy into live-action for Deadpool & Wolverine, the folks at Marvel Studios had quite a casting challenge ahead of them. Perhaps the biggest casting challenge they'd ever faced. Bigger than Spider-Man, bigger than the Fantastic Four. Surprisingly, finding the proper dog to bring such a monumentally important Marvel character to life wasn't too hard. All it took was Reyno?lds checking out the results of the Britain's Ugliest Dog competition.

With her scattered tufts of hair, wonky yet lovable proportions, and dangling tongue, Peggy won the aforementioned competition in 2023, but her unique look won her more than just that. It got her foot in the door to try out the Dogpool role for Deadpool & Wolverine, which she landed with ease. Reynolds announced her casting in November 2023 on X, even later telling Empire, “The reason why I was a hu??ge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.�?Based on looks alone, he couldn't be more correct. “It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple,�?he said of the evolution of Peggy's role in the story as the movie came together.

Deadpool: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (2012)

RuneScape: Untold Tales of the God Wars will launch with an oversized issue in October, with three smaller issues to follow soon after. The storyline follows the God Wars Dungeon questline. Set during this iconic quest, which many players will likely recognize, you'll get to explore the God Wars Dungeon, also known as the Temple of Lost Ancients, while four warring armies are battling it out for control of the Godsword. Protagonis??t Maro dreams of breaking free of his master's clutches, but at the center of this conflict, he might well find himself dealing with greater matters.

However, this it does mark the start of an exciting new era for RuneScape in a medium where most fans probably have?n't engaged with it.

The God Wars Dungeon is one of the most intriguing areas in RuneScape because it feels so epic. It's a sprawling underground labyrinth with four armies, each led by a boss you must battle at some point, who feel almost like remnants of a bygone age. Most games pit you against a single main antagonist or army, whereas this storyline in RuneScape saw you fight four whilst also working doing a doz??en ?other things.

Of course, this is a symptom of RuneScape being an MMO, but the fact that it can still get brand new comic release some 23 years after its initial launch shows that it not only struck a chord with fans back then, people are still obsessed wi???th it today. Even if they don't necessarily play anymore.

Comics are easy to read and full of personality, able to bring worlds to life with vibrant artwork that can reveal more about a universe than you might have seen before. For example, it was Halo comics that showed me the brutality of a Covenant invasion, since you only really get to explore the aftermath or an initial attack with few to no civili?ans around in the games.

But, while the Old Republic games rightfully garner much of the attention covering this formative time in Star Wars, it's the literary reads that contain a treasure trove of value. Here, hidden within these creative classics, fans can find some of the most engaging characters, themes, and plotlines in Star Wars. Thus, utilizing my decades of source reading, I have identified the best Star Wars reads on the Old Republic for y?our reading pleasure.

The Old Republic: Revan

Unquestionably, a gem of a read from the literary Godfather of the Old Republic, Drew Karpyshyn, Revan checks in as a best for any fan of the Old Republic. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Vol. 2 Omnibus

The Knights of the Old Republic Vol.2 omnibus follows Jedi Zayne Carrick, of Carrick Station fame, and his adventures traversing the dangers of the Old Republic. Here, collecting issues #19-37 of the hailed Knights of the Old Republic comic series by Marvel, Vol. 2 dives into the thick of the unlucky Jedi Carrick's story, seeing him on t??he run and unable to prove his innocence in a Jedi padawan massacre.

Undoubtedly one of the best reads on the Old Republic, Vol. 2 keys on many of the prevalent issues of the era, like warring Sith factions, the Mandalorian menace, and galaxy-threatening weapons. Here, Star Wars veteran Jonathan Jackson Miller nails the high-stakes nature of the Old Republic, concocting a fast-paced story with a relatable protagonist and delivering a best-read on Star Wars the Old Republic.

Red Harvest

All over the world, comics have?? gone through many evolutions in their time and have had their ups and downs,?? but they’ve never lost their popularity. Not entirely, anyway. And some prove that by still pulling in massive sales numbers.

Here’s a list of the best-selling comi?cs. Now, to be clear, it’s difficult to say “comics�?and have it mean just one thing. It could be targeted to omit Manga as a separate category or to specifically be about superhero comics. Should it be single issues or include sales from initial prints in magazines like Weekly Shōnen Jump? A lot of comics sales data are simply estimates because they were never strictly tracked, so it’s hard to even be accura?te.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be looking at collected comics sales. That means anything that was re-printed in a trade paperback, tankōbon,? or book format. The comic equivalent of syndication. You can often still buy them, and these sales have also been bett??er tracked, so it’s just a reliable way to rank them. So let’s go.

10. The Adventures of Tintin

If you’re not totally familiar with comics, prepare to learn of Europe’s beloved icons. The Adventures of Tintin started in 1929 in Belgium?. Created by Georges Remi, it managed to survive the Nazi occupation of his home country during World War II. No small task, considering the comic’s eponymous charact??er is commonly depicted as a reporter with the storylines originally having political undertones.

Having survived difficulties going even beyond a global war, The Adventures of Tintin is a fantastic action-adventure series. It has managed some worldwide acclaim, and I know it best from the cartoon based on the series that aired when I was young. Collecti??ons of the comic itself have sold over 200 million copies.

9. Naruto

A Japanese manga series that will be no doubt familiar to many Westerners as well, Naruto is one of the? entries here that have found worldwide success. Starting in 1999, it ran through 72 volumes before ending in 2014. It’s currently sold somewhere north of 250 million copies.

Naruto follows the exploits of the titular ninja and his friends as they complete missions for their home village of Konoh?a. It sprawls itself out from there, covering the protagonists as they improve their skills and gr??ow.

8. Dragon Ball

With the recent passing of series creator and legendary mangaka Akira Toriyama, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dragon Ball now belongs higher on ??the list. However, based on a statement from 2022, ??the series had sold over 260 million copies worldwide.

Does the series itself need any introduction? Maybe not. Based very, very, very loosely on Journey to the West, It follows the adventures of Son Goku as he seeks out the eponymous orbs and battles foes. If you’re a fan of the anime, you may think of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z as distinct entities, but in terms of the manga, it’s the same series, so the ??sales number covers both.

7. Case Closed

While researching these entries, I was confused for a minute because I kept seeing this referred to as Case Closed, but I mostly know it as Great Detective Conan or Meitantei Conan. It follows a high school detective who gets de-aged to middle school (following along so far?) and continues to solve crimes in his new diminutive form. It sounds overly contrived, but it is actually an excellent mystery? thriller series.

It was created by Gosho Aoyama in 1994, Case Closed (or Great Detective Conan) continues to run, having reached ove??r 100 volumes and selling over 270 million units.

6. Doraemon

Starting back in 1969 and running until 1996, Doraemon is an institution and cultural icon in Japan. While the series ended some time ago, the titular character lives on through anime adaptations, video games,?? and other merchandise, helping the manga continue to find new readers. 

Created by Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko under the pen name Fujiko Fujio, it ran until Fujimoto’s death in 1996, which left the series notoriously without an ending. However, that has not hampered its popularity. Its tankō??bon releases have garnered somewhere between 250-300?? million sales.

5. Golgo 13

I mostly remember Golgo 13 as that one NES game with the sex scene in it. However, that game was based on a thrille?r Manga that started in 1968. It?? follows the titular assassin who�?assassinates people using a scoped M16 rifle. Sometimes, he then has to deal with the repercussions of his chosen profession.

Golgo 13 has sold over 300 million copies, solidifyin??g it as one of the best-selling manga of all time. While its creator, Takao Saito, died of cancer in 2021, his wish was that the series would continue. As such, it’s now carried on by a group of creators under Saito Production.

4. Lucky Luke

Having started back in 1946, Lucky Luke is a ubiquitous comic series, but mostly in Europe. It was created in Belgium by Morris (Maurice De Bevere) and has traded hands with new writers and artists over the years. Lucky Luke follows the eponymous cowboy do-gooder an??d his steed, Jolly Jumper as they battle The Dalton Gang and various historical figures.

While less well known in North America, Lucky Luke has brought in over 300 million in sales worldwide.

3. Peanuts

One of the most influential comic strips to ever hit newspapers, Peanuts ran for 50 years from 1950-2000 when the creator, Charles Schulz, died from cancer. Following Charlie Brown and his childhood friends, at its peak, Peanuts was printed in 2600 newspapers across the world. However, that impressive number isn’t a part of the (by now well over since this is an old estimate) 300 million sales number that I’m stating right in this sentence. No, that’s purely just the collec??ted editions that make them available today.

Personally, I remember the series best for 1965’s A Charlie Brown Christmas special. Mostly because it conta??ins some of the only Christmas music my ears can actually stomach.

2. Asterix

If you’re North American, the inclusion of Asterix here might be a bit ??su??rprising. However, it’s incredibly popular on its home continent of Europe. Set back in the Gallic Wars, it follows Asterix (and often Obelix) as they fight against the Roman Empire. 

Created by René Goscinny and  Albert Uderzo back in 1959, the series has traded hands with new writers and artists taking it on, but it has never lost popularity. It even has its own amusement park. The series has sold an estimated 393 million copies. 

1. One Piece

One Piece is hardly the oldest Manga on the block, having first started back in 1997, but it has been go??ing non-stop since then. There are over 100 tankōbon, ?which is impressive. But even more impressive is the fact that the series has sold over 500 million of its collected volumes worldwide.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece follows Monkey ?D. Luffey and his crew of Straw Hat Pirates. The manga has ??received various adaptations, which has no doubt lended to its popularity, and there’s no sign of any slowing down.

In 2024, one of the most popular and recognizable non-Marvel or DC Comics creations turned 30: Hellboy. Yes, the Dark Horse Comics staple has been around for three decades now, having appeared in s??ome truly remarkable print stories along the way. Of course??, given his icon status, it's no surprise that Anung Un Rama has transcended the comic book medium on numerous occasions.

Since his first wide-release story, 1994's Seed of Destruction, Hellboy has tried out numerous mediums. He's a merchandise mover with plenty of t-shirts, action figures, and posters to show for it. He has popped up at the movies three times, with Ron Perlman and David Harbour taking him on. Hellboy has even made t?he jump to animation. Not to mention, he has also ??cracked paranormal cases in the video game realm.

To say Hellboy's gaming tenure has been a mixed bag would be an understatement. While his guest appearances in Injustice 2 and Brawlhalla were fun, his dedicated titles have proven less so. Here they ??all are, ranked from worst to relative? best.

5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Tooth Fairy Terror

Following the success of Hellboy in 2004, director Guillermo del Toro released Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008. Ultimately, it failed to reach the heights of its predecessor, but the cast, production design, and story are all pretty strong. However, the same cannot be said for its shoddy mobile game tie-in, Tuesday Creatives' Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Tooth Fairy Terror.

Released in December 2008, Tooth Fairy Terror was available on the Apple App Store for free, and it's not hard to figure out why. As the terrifying tooth fairies from the film fly toward you, you have to tap on them to "shoot" them. To reload, shake your screen, then get back to defending yourself. Survive as lon?g as you can and rack up as high of a score as possible.

There's not much more to it than that. Tooth Fairy Terror is basic, boring, and entirely skippable for? even the most dedicated Hellboy fans.

4. Hellboy: Dogs of the Night/Hellboy: Asylum Seeker

Hellboy: Dogs of the Night was originally developed for PC back in 2000, later moving to the PlayStation in 2003 under the new title Hellboy: Asylum Seeker. The fact that this is the very first Hellboy-centric video game ever, and that it seems some? amount of effort was made to translate the source material into a video ga??me, is about all that this dual-titled Cryo Studios effort has going for it.

Asylum Seeker/Dogs of the Night has players control Hellboy (David Gasman) himself as he investi??gates the disappearance of one of his fellow Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agents. He uses his fists (typically just his regular one, not the massive stone one) and his revolver to fend off e?nemies, slowly wandering around various environments to piece together what happened to his friend.

All in all, this game is slow, the combat of the tank-control-bound Hellboy feels hollow at best, and the graphics are hideous, even for the era. There's some amount of reverence for the Hellboy comics here in the design?? and story, but ??the execution is a big swing and a miss.

3. Hellboy: The Stench of Evil

Going back to the realm of mobile games, we come to another game meant to drum up hype for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, as well as tie into another soon-to-be-mentioned Hellboy game. This time around, it's G5 Entertainment's Hellboy: The Stench of Evil, which was released on July 10, 2008 and brings the ??title character into the exciting world of action platforming. The problem is, this ??game isn't very exciting.

The Stench of Evil is a pretty ba?re-bones platformer. Hellboy runs and jumps through a few different environments, plowing through enemies with ease. If you take enough punishment to fill up the rage meter, your attacks do even more damage. For a mobile game, the visuals are decent, with fairly detailed environments and plenty of color.

On the whole, Hellboy: The Stench of Evil isn't horrifically bad, nor is it particularl?y good. It's a middle-of-the-road promotional game and nothing more.

2. Hellboy: The Science of Evil

After spending some time away from the console scene, Hellboy and his companions made their grand return in 2008. Hellboy: The Science of Evil brings the del Toro Hellboy universe to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP, comp??lete with Perlman back as Big Red, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman, and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien �?all three being playable, no less. They unite to defeat the evil Herman von Klempt (Jürgen Prochnow) and his forces.

Compared to the previous three games, The Science of Evil is a huge step forward, but it's still not great. The design, voice acting, combat, and story can't quite make up for the somewhat lacking graphics and uninspired gameplay. With a bit more polish and development, The Science of Evil could've bee??n the Hellboy adventure gamers had wanted for years.

It has also been said that Lobster Johnson, voiced by the legendary Bruce Campbell, was slated for a DLC release, only for such content to be canned. This is just another example of The Science of Evil coming? so close to g?reatness just to end up missing the mark.

1. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd

Well over a decade after receiving his own dedicated game, Hellboy returned to the gaming forefront in 2023 via Hellboy: Web of Wyrd. It's not using a movie franchise as its basis, nor is it designed to promote something else. It's just a Hellboy tale, in the aesthetic of the Hellboy comi??cs, with Dark Horse and Mignola directly involved. But, how well does it all come together?

Web of Wyrd is undeniably the most beautiful Hellboy-centric game to date, appearing as a comic come to life. The late, great Lance Reddick makes for an excellent Hellboy, who's looking for a missing BPRD agent through a dimension called the Wyrd. Unfortunately, the combat in this roguelike (not to be confused with roguelite) title leaves much to be desired, resulting in much of the gameplay feeling dull?? and repetitive.

With 30 years behind him, evidently, Hellboy has yet to receive a truly definitive video game adaptation. Hop?efully, at some point in the next 30, that game w?ill come along.

Over the ye??ars, numerous Marvel Comics icons have made their way into the realm of gaming. Alongside such titans as Spider-Man and Iron Man is Wolverine, who has popped up in all kinds of widely-beloved titles.

The many mainline Marvel vs. Capcom games, the X-Men Legends duology, the Marvel Ultimate Alliance franchise, and more all feature Logan prominently, giving gamers the chance to hack and slash through enemies with his adamantium claws at their leisure. At the same time, there are some Wolverine-including titles that have fallen by the wayside as time has gone on, chief among them being X2: Wolverine's Revenge.

The Wolverine game that time forgot

Way back in the early 2000s, Marvel media was in a vastly different place. The Marvel Cinematic Universe had yet to launch, and comic book adaptations were far from "in." Director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series and the X-Men franchise from 20th Century Fox carried the torch for superhero cinema in this period,??? so these characters were some of the few to get the video game treatment.

Though many recognize 2006's X-Men: The Official Game as the only X-Men movie tie-in game of this era, that's not technically true. Wolverine's Revenge was marketed as a tie-in to 2003's X2: X-Men United, complete with Hugh Jackman as the title character on the cover and Sir Patrick Stewar??t as the voice of Professor?? Charles Xavier. In practice, though, this is a comic book-based game that has no substantial connection to the movies.

Wolverine's Revenge follows a New X-Men-looking Wolverine (voiced by the iconic Mark Hamill) as he seeks a cure for a deadly illness called the Shiva Strain, which he was infected with during his time in the Weapon X program. With only two days to find the cure before it kills him, he traverses frozen tundras and mercenary-filled bases. Along the way, you'll battle villains Magneto (Fred Tatasciore), Sabretooth (Tatasciore), and Lady Deathstrike (Gwendoline Yeo) and encounter fellow X-Men like Colos?sus (Ted Nordblum) and Rogue (Jennifer Hale).

In terms of gameplay, Wolverine's Revenge is interesting. Despite Wolverine's reputation for running around tearing his enemie??s to shreds, there's qui?te a heavy emphasis on stealth here. You find yourself using heightened senses to do everything from track and stealth kill enemies to spot hidden landmines.

If you do try to brute force it from checkpoint to checkpoint, you'??ll quickly be on the hunt for health pickups or in use of Wolverine's healing factor.

Thankfully, enduring the tedious stealth and being mindful of your health does allow you to have some beat 'em up fun here and there. You can punch, kick, and claw your way through enemies, even throwing them around if you so cho??ose. Wolverine also has a special Strike move capable of damaging one or more enemies with the push of a button.

As with all great games of the era, Wolverine does have a rage meter that fills up by attacki??ng enemies and taking damage. When it's full, Wolverine can temporarily enter Feral Rage mode. Movement speed and damage output will increase for the duration.

Why X2: Wolverine's Revenge became a forgotten Marvel video game

So, what went wrong that led to Wolverine's Revenge being in relative obscurity for over 20 years? For starters, the story isn't the most captivating, and the overall pres?entation isn't very enticing.

Much of the game is draped in a gray, black, and white color palette, so it's not much to look at. Worse yet, the stealth and combat mechanics are clunky, which one could forgive if it wasn't for the difficulty curve being so steep. Wolverine's Revenge ?loves to throw enemies and harmful obstacles at you in spades, with health pickups and checkpoin??ts frustratingly spaced out.

Simply put, there were better-looking and more enjoyable X-Men games out at the time of the game's release, making it hard to put in the work to enjoy it. As its contemporaries soared to new heights, Wolverine's Revenge became increas?ingly less impressive. Those who played it as kids way back when might have a soft spot for it, but if they pick it up today, it likely won't take long for the nostalgia to wane.

Wolverine is an indisputable Marvel icon. After all, the opportunity for Jackman to go back on his Wolverine retirement for Deadpool & Wolverine likely wouldn't have a??risen if there wasn't so much lo??ve and passion out there for the character.

Sadly, Wolverine's Revenge didn't quite live up to the titular hero's legacy then, and it certainly doesn't all these years later. Sure, there's some fun to be had with it, but it's far fro?m the definitive Wolverine gaming experience. One can only hope that Insomniac's Wolverine doesn't follow a similar path to Wolv??erine's Revenge, lest it become just another so-so Marvel game lost to time.

Capitalism and Crypto breaks all

This weekend saw UDON Comics publish the first issue of Street Fighter 6, a new comic that acts as a prologue to the events of Capcom's upcoming sequel �?Issue #1, which is available to download for free right here, follows the journey of Ken Masters, as he visits the worryingly?? militant district of? Nayshall.

Ken is b??ringing his conglomerate, The Masters Foundation, to the recently founded nation in order to run a lucrative fighting tournament, working alongside the nation's sinister minister Johann Petrovich, known to most as simply "JP". Ken is not quite the man he used to be, however. Not only is he estranged from his wife, Eliza, but he is worrying the board of his foundation, ha??ving divulged company funds into unstable markets, such as cryptocurrency.

Moreso, Ken has been neglecting his growing son, Mel, who in the issue has been offloaded on PMC cop and SF6 poster boy, Luke Sullivan. If all of this wasn't enough,? Ken is quickly learning that Nayshall, the locale for his latest pipe dream, is hardly the free-est of states, plagued with violent revolution over its recent gentrification. This has brought anger to the nation's people �?anger that Mr. Masters is set to face first-hand.

The first issue not only gives fans a li??ttle insight into the politics of Nayshall itself, but also introduces us to the frightening JP, gives us a little time with Luke, (I just don't like the dude), and sets the paving fo??r the events that will lead to Ken's rough fall from grace. Yer boy is going to need some serious guidance, and soon. Hopefully, he'll eventually get it, perhaps delivered in the vessel of his dearest friend and rival.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic The Last Ronin ?is being adapted ?into a video game. The surprising but intriguing news was confirmed by Paramount Global's senior vice president for games, Doug Rosen. A developing studio, platforms, or release date was not revealed.

Released in 2020, TMNT: The Last Ronin tells of a single turtle �?wearing a black mask and wielding the iconic weaponry of all four Heroes in an Half-Shell �?as they pick their way through a dystopian, futuristic take of New York, seeking revenge for their fallen brethren. The identity of the turtle remains something of a mystery until its revelation further in the tale, making The Last Ronin a particularly grim entry to the TMNT pantheon.

According to Rosen, (in comments made to Polygon), the video game adaptation will be a single-player adventure, though other characters will be playable in various flashbacks dotted throughout the story. Rosen makes illusions to The Last Ronin having gameplay similar to Sony Santa Monica's recent God of War releases �?likely referencing a dramatic, ??third-person, combat-heavy escapade. The title is in its very early pre-production stages, so ??it is understandable at least several years away from release.

While most of the TMNT video games tend to be of the standard brawler/fighter variety, TMNT: The Last Ronin could shape up to be something very different �?both tonally and from a gameplay perspective. While fans of The Fab Four await its arrival, they can still find plenty of digital entertainment in the great recent releases TMNT: Shredder's Revenge and TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection.

2K Games has released the third DLC pack for its great strategy adventure Marvel's Midnight Suns �?"The Hunger", now available on all platforms, sees the arrival of the sinis?ter and conflicted nightwalker, Mo?rbius the Living Vampire.

A masterful scientist of shifting morals, Morbius has been pushed to team with the Midnight Suns following a vampire breakout in New York City. In a related incident, Hydra has begun infusin?g its soldiers with u??ndead DNA in an effort to create a form of unkillable soldier, Morbius is hoping to reverse-engineer this formula in order to further develop a cure for his own medicinal misgivings, while further preventing Hydra from dabbling in the undead arts.

The Hunger DLC adds Morbius as a recruitable hero, as well as new story missions, complete with their own bespoke enemies. A new "Laboratory" upgrade will be added to the Abbey, along with a fistful of Hero?? Skins, Abbey Outfits, and S?wimsuits. Morbius himself sports 11 brand new Hero abilities, mostly focused around causing "Bleed" status on his enemies, (naturally). Morbius focuses on single-hit damage, and can also activate "Bloodlust", which applies the Bleed effect to all of his other skills.

While seemingly strange bedfellows, teaming Morbius with Blade will result in an assault pattern absolutely?? teeming with the red stuff �?With Blade able to cause Bleed with his various chain attacks, before Morbius fo?llows up with powerful, single-hit impacts to put their hapless enemies back in the dirt.

It was... inevitable

The extremely compelling mobile card game Marvel Snap has had a stupendous launch, having raked in just over $50 million USD in revenue ?since its launch?? on iOS and Android platforms in October 2022.

The digital tabletop title �?the first game from Californian studio Second Dinner �?sees players build a deck of heroes and villains from the famous comic book brand, before going to battle in strategic, turn-based gameplay. Players can earn or purchase various new cards in order to build up their deck, and take part in limited-time events, seasons, and tournaments. Currently, the title is enjoying an Ant-Man-themed event, in collaboration with the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe release Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania.

Due to the exciting nature of the game's roster as well as a short playtime of only a few minutes �?Marvel Snap won over a huge community of players at Quicksilver speed. Roughly 12 million players downloaded the title in its launch month with around $30 million in revenue pulled in by January of this year. Of course, many mobile titles enjoy this burst of incredible success in their opening six months, and time will tell whether Marvel Snap will continue? to grow over the remainder of 2023. But given the popularity of the Marvel brand, and the overall quality of the game itself. I would expect those microtransaction bucks to keep rolling in for the foreseeable future.

Series Drop to affect card rarity

Marvel Snap might want to ensure that they have a hand as mighty as Thanos this month, as developer Second Dinner has announced that it?s highly-anticipated PvP Battle Mode will be launching in the digital card battler as soon as this month.

First announced back in the fall of 2022, the Marvel Snap PvP Battle Mode will give players the ability to swiftly and thoroughly pound their pals into mush, slapping down a series of cards designed to ruin ??everybody's day. I'm looking at you, Agatha Harkness. The update is expected to launch on January 31, though the developers ask players for patience in lieu of any possible last-minute delays or pushbacks.

In addition to PvP Battle Mode, the new update will debut Marvel Snap's official rebalance system, known as "Series Drop". This semi-regular event will see higher-level cards �?for example Series 3, 4, and 5 �?drop a tier each, increasing their chance of appearance ahead of any newly debuting characters. The team is aiming for one Series Drop per month. It should be noted that the most powerful cards, such as Thanos and Galactus, will not be reduced?? in rarity. As? these fellas are bad boys 4 life.

Finally, Second Dinner notes that?? is currently investigating the rate at which Tokens are earned, in line with the price of in-store cards. The team hopes to come up with a fair and acceptable way to help Series 3 players push toward the upper echelons of Series 4 and 5 with less frustration. While no specific changes were announced, Second Dinner will continue to experiment with balance tweaks to help expedite progress.

Skunkape Games has announced that it has begun development of Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse Remastered, following on from its previously released remasters of Telltale Games classics Sam & Max Save the World Remastered and Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space Remastered. ?This latest retrea?d will launch on unannounced platforms later in 2023.

First released on PC and PS3 way back in 2010, The Devil's Playhouse was the third of Telltale Games' Sam & Max adventures, and sees the Freelance Police investigate a series of strange phenomena linked to the powerful psychic machinations of the mysterious "Toys of Power". The original release of The Devil's Playhouse sported ??a fresh new game engine, and allowed the player to take direct?? control of both Sam and Max independently �?allowing for a shakeup of the title's puzzle elements and adding an extra emphasis on synergy and teamwork between the two characters.

While Skunkape Games has not offered any official information on the new title, we can likely expect The Devil's Playhouse Remastered to feature updated character models and environmental textures, tauter controls, and slicker U.I. integration. If we're lucky, we might also see the new release include additional artwork, voicework, and music, as was the case for both Save the World Remastered and Beyond Time and Space Remastered. DC Extended Universe to cover all mediums

James Gunn, director of big-screen comic-book epics such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, has? suggested that upcoming video games set within the DC Comics universe are to be included in the overall lore of the DC Universe at large.

Gunn, who was recently assigned the role of co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, made the comments in a recent Twitter exchange, confirming plans to have DC Studios' future projects �???be they cinematic, animated, televisual, or in the medium of gaming �?essentially inhabit the same univers?e. This broadens the scope for character arcs far beyond that of almost any "cinematic universe" to date.

While the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, it's difficult not to see the potential for chaos in these plans. The idea that, for example, Rocksteady's oft-delayed title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League might lay arcs for characters in upcoming films, or TV shows, (or vice versa). Gunn's comments also come after the initial efforts for a fully connected DC extended universe have essentially resulted in a plethora of mediocre to terrible movies �?with the better efforts, such as Matt Reeves' The Batman, being? distinctly disconnected from DC Comics cinematic canon at large.

DC Comics has struggled in its efforts to present a coherent and reliable connected universe when it was only focused on one arcing medium, (cinema), the idea of trying to? build a similar project via multiple mediums seems to be something of a herculean task. Still, the new co-CEO clearly sees potential in the conce??pt, so we'll just have to wait and see what the future brings for Batman, Joker, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman.

But not Batgirl. Apparently.

Comic book carnage from Firaxis

Publisher 2K Games and developer Firaxis have released a gameplay overview trailer for its upcoming release, Marvel's Midnight Suns. The comic-book strategy adventure will launch next week on PS5, PC, and Xbox S?eries, with PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch ports to follow at a later date.

In the video, we see the turn-based strategy that Firaxis has finally honed in games such as the acclaimed XCOM series applied to familiar characters from Marvel'??s huge universe of superheroes, (and villains). Under the guidance of custom protagonist "The Hunter", players will utilize the skills of names such as Dr. Stange, Wolverine, Iron Man, Blade, Captain Ma?rvel, Spider-Man, and The Scarlet Witch to lead an attack on the dark armies of Lillith, Mother of Demons.

Much like its XCOM brethren, Midnight Suns will offer up a story-based campaign, in which they will lead a growing team of heroes into the battlefield, utilizing the offensive and defensive capabilitie?s of the crew to ensure a glowing victory in battle. New heroes and abilities will be forged and unlocked as the story progresses, with powerful, scene-clearing Hero Moves being offered to characters who are on a particular roll in the ongoing war against evil.

There's no denying that the XCOM titles handle strategic action very well, and this marriage of Firaxis' pedigree with the Marvel universe's cast of exciting characters could result in a fine hour-eater ??for those long, cold winter evenings. Having already faced a one-year delay, comic book fans need only wait one more week before they get the opportunity to take their favorite characters into ?battle.

Not my favorites, of course??. As I don't see Jessica Drew or Nebula anywhere...

This weekend saw the official reveal of the next hero headed to Blizzard Entertainment's shooter sequel Overwatch 2, but while the incoming Omnic Ramattra might have taken some of the community by surprise, (given the persisting rumor that Mauga would be next), some die-hard fans are sat with itchy trigge?r fingers waiting on the arrival of the mysterious mech maiden, D.Mon.

D.Mon, as OW lore fans will realize, is a member of South Korea's Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army �?more commonly known by the acronym "MEKA". The MEKA is a ??party of highly skilled operatives who assist the government with various tasks, ranging from global defense to search-and-rescue operations. Encased in finely tuned, state-of-the-art mech units, MEKA are single-person assault vehicles, capable of both incredible firepower and swift movement �?offering an edge in any battle.

Sound familiar? Of course. And that's because original Overwatch hero D.Va is, herself, MEKA'??s finest soldier to date, utilizing her top-tier gaming ski?lls to pilot her unit in battle. The core MEKA squad consists of Hana Song (D.Va), Jae-Eun (Casino), Kyung-Soo (King), and Seung-Hwa (Overlord), but fans have been paying particular attention lately to its fifth member Yuna, who goes by the call sign D.Mon.

Having only appeared in Overwatch comics, little is known about D.Mon, outside of the fact that she rose through the e-sports ranks with Song, and the two have become firm friends and comrades in their many MEKA battles. D.Mon is portrayed as being an incredibly loyal and ??????????????????????????reliable ally, willing t?o protect her friends at the risk of her own life. Yuna's mech "Beast", reflects her charged personality in battle, and is arguably the most aggressive-looking of the MEKA team.

While Overwatch 2 rolls out its new slew of characters, some fans are eagerly awaiting D.Mon to make her debut on ??the battlefield. It would definitely be interesting to see a second piloted mech in the?? mix, though one struggles to imagine what D.Mon could bring to the fight that would make her a distinctly different character from D.Va herself.

Free-to-play mobile card game Marvel Snap has already gotten off to a smashing start, having raked in a staggering $2 million USD in revenue since? its launch just one week ago. Available on PC and mobile platforms, the card combat title has already been downloaded ??by some 5.3 million players.

Marvel Snap is a strategic card battler that focuses on the heroes and villains of the legendary comic-book universe. Players engage in battles, single-player challenges, and objective-based modes wi?th their chosen hand of heroes, set against the backdrop of famous locales from the Marvel universe. Part of the title's attraction is in slick visual style and library of quality Marvel artwork, as?? well as its speedy gameplay �?The average battle takes around three-to-four minutes.

The data, which was compiled by AppMagic and reported by mobilegamer.biz, shows that the United States has, unsurprisingly, been the most popular territory for downloads, counting for some 1.3 million players and $1.2 million in revenue. Marvel Snap's second territory of popularity is Brazil, with 433,000 players, and then Italy, with 342,000. The iOS version of the title has the lion's share of the player ??base.

It better have a 'Sonic Sez' segment

We are only a few short weeks away from the return of an icon, as Sonic Frontiers prepares for its November debut on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms �?And while fans wait for The Blue Blur to return, Sega hopes to perform some important scene-setting via a narrative prologu??e, to be delivered in both comic-book and anima??tion form.

As revealed on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter, Sega is preparing to drop a two-part digital comic, that will offer up a little backstory on the events that preceded Sonic finding himself isolated in a strange, eerie, and monolithic new world.  Sonic the Hedgehog: Convergence is written by frequent Sonic scribe Ian Flynn �?with characterful artwork by Evan Stanley & Heather Breckel �?and will no doubt provide suitable reading to get series' fans hype fires burning brightly? before the game's big launch.

While no further information was offered, Sega did announce that an animated short is also in the works, which will again help lay the groundwork for the new adventure.  Sega has utilized animation frequently in its marketing of Sonic the Hedgehog titles.  And usually to very good effect, as the world of Sonic and his anthro pals always lends itself very well to the medium of animation �?perhaps better than any other gaming franchise.  We'll be sure to give you a heads-up when the Sonic Frontiers comic and animated short are available.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games have released a short trailer teasing the arrival of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC. The ne?w port of the smash-selling PlayStation title will come wall-crawling onto Steam and Epic Games Store platforms sometime thi??s fall.

Released in November 2020 as a PS5 launch title, The Marvel's Spider-Man pseudo-sequel follows the adventures of young Miles Morales, who is forced to step up his game as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man when his home district of Harlem is severely threatened by the collate??ral damage of a war between greedy capitalists and a violent criminal element, led by the malevolent Tinkerer. Having only just?? discovered his calling as Spider-Man, Morales is pushed to hit the ground running in order to save his community from annihilation.

Much like its beloved predecessor Marvel's Spider-Man, Miles Morales was celebrated by both video game and comic-book fans for its authentic replication of the Spiderverse and its popular cast of characters. Critics praised the follow-up's slick and engaging gameplay, fluid combat, and improved range of side-missions and activities. This new port will represent the latest in an increasing catalog of PlayStation titles that are making the leap to the PC platform �?a library that also includes games from popular Sony franchises including Uncharted, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
