Humor me for a minute

We've spent months meticulously breaking down every facet of the PlayStation vs. Xbox argument. It'??s time to tackle truly the least important of the arguments.

Did Microsoft o??r Sony put out a better launch trailer? Take three minutes to comp??are the evidence.

They take starkly different approaches. Sony went for a more cinematic and inspirational tone. It's a bunch of pioneers and explorers and boundary-pushers, as if Sony is saying "That's us. The PS5 is Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart."

Microsoft, on the other hand, cares more about making sure everyone knows exactly what Xbox brings to the table. It's a sizzle reel of fe??atures and services, and the whole thing is meant to convey all the value in the Xbox ecosystem. It's a less compelling direction but probably better for the undecided consumer.

Interestingly, Xbox's message is "You are the future of gaming," and it seems like PlayStation's message is "We are the future of?? gaming." I like that confidence and it's why I'm ??giving the PlayStation 5 the edge in the Console Launch Trailer Wars of 2020.

Regardless of who you end up siding with, I think we ca??n all ??agree that this was a tremendous waste of time.

This one's not so mini...

Unlike most modern "mini" pack-in play consoles, the TurboGrafx-16 Mini has neither become impossible to find nor has it seen drastic price-drops. It's the very definition of a middling success, which is more than the original iteration of the system could say for itself. Due to a variety of reasons, the system never took off outside of Japan, though it's still home to a litany of classics: Bonk's Adventure, Snatcher, and Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, to name a few. 

My guess is the modern "Mini" version of the console has fared better so far due to years of passionate word-of-mouth praise from TG-16 obsessives such as myself. If it were up to me, it would be Bonk, not Sonic, battling Mario at the Olympics, palling around with James Marsden at the movies, and eating chili dogs in the dreams of many a millennial. He's my favorite 16-bit baby boy. 

That said, the TG-16 Mini wasn't truly the best vessel for him, and the TG-16 library, to make its return. It's missing so many classics: Bonk 3, Valis 2, Legendary Axe 1 & 2, Bloody Wolf, Keith Courage, and Far East of Eden. Sure, you could just? hack the thing to add the ROMS of thos?e titles to the console, but for those that want to play the original software sans tampering, Analogue has the solution.

Today the boutique ??console developer announced the Duo, a new emulation-free piece of hardware that runs everything from the TG-16/PC Engine family, including the SuperGrafx, Tu??rboGrafx CD, PC Engine CD-ROM², and Super Arcade CD??-ROM. The console doesn't release until next year, but you may want to sign up for the mailing list now. Perhaps due to issues around FPGA board availability, consoles from Analogue tend to be produced in extremely limited quantities, so if you want in on this higher-energy game system, you better work.

Finger-lickin' weird

KFC is no stranger to dumb gaming stunts. Hell, I'm no stranger to reporting about their dumb gaming stunts. I consider this my personal editorial beat.

Fresh off the heels of a render-heavy Xbox Series X event and a despicably Silent Hills-less PlayStation 5 reveal, KFC has thrown their hat into the ring with the KFCo??nsole. Yes, the KFConsole.

In a delicious reveal on Twitter, KFC brought the big guns announcing the KFCo??nsole. Eschewing the refrigerator motif Microsoft chose and Sony's evil genius router look, KFC's chicken-bucket-shaped powerhouse promises cross platform compatibility, true 4k, 120 fps, and most importantly, a built-in? chicken chamber to keep your high-calorie, high-sodium processed meat nice and warm while you slowly waste away in front of your television set.

So, what makes KFC a viable contender in a saturated console market wherein the likes of SEGA, Google, and others either outright quit or struggled against the "big three" industry giants? For starters, no former competitors had the raw power and stable financial support of the American fast food industry backing their every move. And second, none have dared to combine the endless entertainment of video games with the average US consumer's insatiable appetite. KFC is doing what?? Nintendon't.

Now, is this monstrosity of insubstantial consumption a serious attempt at creating a new console? Pro?bably not, but? there is a "release" date of November 12, 2020, at the end of the teaser, so maybe something will come of this. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed...and licked.

Pachter and Moore weigh in

Next-gen console reveals have been a drawn-out waiting game, as both Sony and Microsoft have spent more than a year giving us an agonizingly slow dripfeed of information. However, when it? comes to price, a couple of industry experts expect Microsoft to wait until Sony is forced to make the first move.

Geoff Keighley recently hosted a new mini-episode of his Bonus Round podcast, and two of his guests were industry analyst Michael Pachter and Liverpool FC CEO (and former EA COO) Peter Moore. At about the 10:25 mark in the podcast, they start to discuss Xbox Series X and PlayStation ?5 pricing, prompting Pachter to theorize that he believes?? Microsoft is "waiting Sony out."

"From what I've seen, Sony's gonna have to charge $500 for the PS5 and Microsoft has a big balance sheet," Pachter says. "If they wanna cut the price by $100 -- just price below [the PS5] and sub?sidize the first 10 million [units] -- they will. So, I think that they're waiting to have Sony blink first and then they’ll reveal the price and the launch date ... Very likely sometime in November and very likely $400."

Moore chimed in "[Pachter's] right. What both companies are going through right now is [asking] 'how much can we afford to lose in? the first 12 to 18 months?' 'What is our attach rate of software to hardware?' ... 'What are we willing to do in year one, two and three to hit 10 million [units]?" Moore also added that Microsoft is in a good overall position right now in terms of its stock price, and inferred that CEO Satya Nadella should undercut the PS5 price to take an early le??ad in next-gen console sales.

However, while Microsoft may have the runway to take an initial loss on Xbox Series X production, Nadella's decision will be informed by whether he thinks he can convince shareholders that launching at a low price point (and higher overall sales) is worth the short-term risk and decreased profits despite se?tting Xbox up for success in the long-term. It might be a tough sell because shareholders are always cagey about anything that affects the immediate future of stock price.

We'll find out at some point. Microsoft and Sony can't wait forever to give us prices and launch dates. Besides, we're already perfectly? accustomed to waiting.

PS5 to see fewer launch units than PS4

A new report from business news outlet Bloomberg suggests that Sony plan to produce only a limited supply of PlayStation 5 units for the console's first year of lau??nch, "far fewer" than? that of PlayStation's previous generations.

The report, which Bloomberg attributes to insiders, cites that a powerful and expensive internal composition - and therefore a loftier price tag - is the reason for the smaller production run, commenting that "game developers" are predicting the PS5 to retail for between $499 and $549 at launch. Around five million consoles are expected to be produced for the fiscal year ending March 2021. By comparison, the PS4 shippe??d 7.5 million consoles in its first half-year.

While it would seem obvious to point to the ongoing COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic as a reason for the limited release, Bloomberg's sources say that global health concerns have only affected Sony's PS5 marketing plans. Production will go ahead as scheduled, in its originally expected capac?ity, with no last-mi?nute delays on the horizon.

The report also states that Sony plans to further promote its current hardware, PlayStation 4, as a "bridge" to the next generation. It is suggested that Sony will drop the price of the PS4 and the P??S4 ?Pro at the PS5's launch in order to encourage new PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

Of course, the key words here are "suggested" and "predicted," It's worth noting that none ?of this has been officially announced. Business - all business - is in a completely fragile state right now, with production, marketing, distribution, retail, and overall economic issues worldwide. So, although there is probable truth in elements of this report, the industry as a whole is currently at its most unpredictable.

Playing cat and mouse

We've heard a little bit about both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, but neither Sony nor Microsoft has revealed plans for next-gen pricing. That isn't much of a surprise. It's still a bit early for those kind of details. However, recent comments from a Sony executive seem to hint that ??it wants to take a reacti??onary stance and let Microsoft make the first move.

IGN reports that Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki recently stressed that "it's difficult to discuss [the price of PlayStation 5]" because Sony doesn't want to ru??sh this information. Rather, Sony could be waiting for Microsoft to announce the price of the Xbox Series X before messaging the price of the PS5. Further, it's suggested that Sony might not even have a finalized price in mind yet, instead po??ssibly adjusting it internally based on whatever route Microsoft goes.

It's important to note that Sony can't rely solely on its competitor when pricing the PS5. Totoki also mentions that it's a delicate balancing act because price partially dictates expected demand. Sony then needs to find an appropriate marketing budget to optimize sales. It's complicated stuff. But, there's some indication that Sony wants to hear Microsoft's str??ategy first.

Here is Totoki's statement in full:

First we must absolutely control the labor cost the personnel cost. It ??must be controlled. And it leads to what should be recognized as a cost. We will definitely control that. And the initial ramp-up, how much can we prepare, initially we will work on the production and t??he sales and we will have to prepare the right volume as we launch this.

What is not very clear or visible, it's because we are competing in the space. So it's very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time. And depending upon the price level, we may have to determine ??the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much cost we are prepared to pay. So it's a q??uestion of balance.

And because it's a balancing act, it's very difficult to say anything concrete at this point of time. But when I said a smooth transition, we mean that we wi?ll definitely choose the optimal approach, and that we would try to ha??ve the best balance, so that, we will be profitable in the life -- during, the life of this product.

I'm hoping it's gonna be 30 quid

We all got a big surprise this week when initial news regarding Sony's next console, the PlayStation 5, was revealed courtesy of Wired magazine. While we got to hear information regarding the physicality of the console, its components, and its backward-compatibility plans, price was not mentioned. Unde??rstandable gi?ven these early days.

Still, a tweet posted by Wired's Peter Rubin, who wrote the original feature, includes a sho?rt exchange between him and PlayStation 5 architect Mark Cerny. Pressed for a rough price window for the new magical box?, Cerny noted: "I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP (suggested retail price) that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set." Rubin pushed further, but that was all that he was getting.

Of course, no-one is expecting? Sony to reveal their hand regarding pricing at this early stage, but "appealing" is obviously subjective when it comes to buckeroos. We are heading into a new era of technology, one in which some are attempting to eschew hardware altogether. As such, pricing is going to be particularly important. Especially in a time of paid subscription services and high-level PC components.

It's not as if the PlayStation 5 won't sell, even if it's expensive. But it would certainly price some people out of the market if so, and could even lead some to cheaper, non-hardware alternatives. It's going to be interesting seeing this next generation balance its immensely powerful tech costs against not ??only their o??pposition, but services that aim to remove the traditional console from the market in its entirety.

Turn it on to get turned on

The console space is all but locked up at this point with the three major manufacturers enjoying a stranglehold on the industry. Sure, there are attempts at alternatives, like the ill-fated Ouya, and I guess the Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV could technically be considered consoles. But even with those opti?ons, there isn’t much room for a fourth console manufacturer in gaming.

Or is there?

Maybe those other consoles have been trying too hard to appeal to everyone when they should have gone after a more niche market, one currently not being served by Nintendo, Xbox, or Sony. You can buy almost any type of game on their systems, everything from fam?ily-friendly puzzlers to extremely violent shooters, but there is one genre you won't find on any of their storefronts: adult games. Sexy time games have been banished from consoles since the '80s and even titles that aren't necessarily explicit can sometimes have their content changed or face outright cancellation at the behest of the gatekeepers. Why, oh why, isn’t there a console for the adult gamer enthusiasts among us? Well, now there is.&nb??sp;

It’s called the…console. I guess Sexbox was too on the nose. Unoriginal name aside, the device is from Nutaku, one of the most well-known names in adult gaming, and is a Windows-based platform that comes pre-loaded with the Nutaku D?esktop Application. Also, it’s shaped like a boob. Players will have access to more than 200 free-to-play and premium adult games out of the box, however, it does not seem like a controller is included in the package.

The console itself features a silicone covered shell with a “flesh-like feel” and the nipple acts as the power button. There are also two USB ports, an HDMI port, audio jack, and wireless internet connection. The Nutaku Console will be available in limited quantities and will retail for $169. As of th??e posting of this story, the listing for the console says it is sold out but it appears they are restocking.

Japan only, too

It seems with any new game coming out in Japan, there is a themed PS4 console to go along with it. If you're a fan of Valkyria Chronicles and are eagerly awaiting the upcoming 4, why not import t?his garish looking beast? B?eauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Time for an upgrade

For those unaware, Japan is getting a really sweet looking Monster Hunter: World branded PS4 Pro to go along with the launch of the game next week. While importing was always an ??option, the console has basically been sold out since it was announced. Now the rest ??of the world might stand a chance of getting it, as Capcom has announced that the Pro bundle will be releasing worldwide.

In addition to the game and a stylish themed controller, you'll also get the very f??etching 1 TB PS4 Pro that can run the game at a higher quality se?tting or with a smoother framerate. There are some other goodies like a dynamic dashboard theme and a couple of in-game items. The console will release on January 26 for $449.99 and will be a GameStop exclusive in North America. European gamers will be able to pick it up anywhere.

If you don't want a Monster Hunter themed console, but were more partial to that Destiny 2 white PS4 Pro, that will al?so be getting a standalone release at the end of the month. It, too, will be a? GameStop exclusive in North America.

Hybrid console tops annual list

For a compan?y?? that had been considered done and dusted in the hardware race, Nintendo sure had an amazing turnaround of fortunes this year. The Switch console has proven to be a hugely popular and successful device, despite some skeptical eyebrow-raising on its announcement (which I was party to myself).

Long-running publication TIME magazine has released it annual honours lists, with Nintendo's puppy finding itself in the top spot of th?e "Best Gadget of 2017" category, beating out the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Microsoft's Xbox One X. The article was particularly praising of the console's po??rtability, by which games could be seamlessly transitioned from big screen to handheld format.

Additionally, the SNES Classic also made an appearance in the list, with the tough-to-attain retr?o device falling just outside of the top five, la??nding itself a respectable sixth slot.

As the end of the year approaches, it will be interesting to see how media outlets reflect on the Nintendo Switch and its range of software. With two exclusive titles -- Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild -- contenders for many Game of the Year lists, it's been a damn successful year for a company that many were calling to leave the hardwa?re indus??try altogether.

Some other details surface, as well

In the week following Nintendo's reveal of Doom coming to the Switch, we've gotten a bunch of info about the specifics of how large it will be and how it will perform. While we already knew the game cart wasn't going to include multiplayer, we now know exactly how big that extra download is. If you happen to go physical and actually want to enjoy fragging y??our friends, make sure to set aside around 9 GB for the download.

Apparently the game is going to ship on a 16 GB cart, meaning developer Panic Button (who is han?dling this port in lieu of ID Software) somehow compressed the game down to a fairly manageable size. I'm guessing this has to do more with visual assets not being at full HD (1080p) resolution, but maybe Nintendo is lending some of their wizardry to third-parties.

As for how well the game will run, the target framerate is going to be 30 FPS. I'm not surprised at that statement, seeing as how the Switch isn't a technical powerhouse. It's mostly impressive that Doom is even functional on a Switch in a form that resembles the other console v?ersions, so I'm sure people will be okay with that. I don't know if I could handl??e the game running at half speed, but I'm also not the target audience for this conversion.

About the framerate, Bethesda told Glixel, "The game and rendering technology underlying Doom is extremely scalable. In bringing Doom to Switch, we targeted outstanding visuals at a solid 30 fps and by maintaining a consistent 30 fps, the experience remains consistently fluid and smooth. We’ve been thrilled with the feedback that Doom is among the very best looking and perfo??rmin??g games on Switch."

Why the multiplayer has to even be separate, I'm not quite sure. The game could just ship on a 32 GB card and contain everything, but that might possibly drive the cost up (damn you, Switch tax!). I'm mainly just shocked that if you go digital, you can actually fit the entirety of Doom on your Switch with a little room to spare. How's that for optimization 2K?!

I didn't need food this month anyway

Microsoft hasn't been having the best ye??ar for exclusives or incentives to keep people on Xbox One. With Sony already having its "4K" solution in stores, Microsoft is going to have to impress with Project Scorpio at E3 today. According to Geoff Keighley on Twitter, it looks like the price point might be putting some people off of a potential purchase.

Now, taken by itself, that does sound expensive, but one has to consider what Project Scorpio is doing. For a console to output native 4K visuals is damn impressive at that price point. To get the same result on PC, you're looking at investing in a $400+ video card an?d even more if you want to keep your games at 60 FPS.

Whether or not this ends up being true, it looks like Microsoft is doing everything in its power to make Project? S?corpio as competitive as possible. I was honestly expecting a price of around $700, but $500 sounds much better. Hopefully it lives up to the hype as Microsoft really needs a win to stay in this race.

Ghosts did it without anyone noticing

According to NPD Group, an analyst firm that tracks the sales stats of games, Ghost Recon Wildlands outsold Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the US for March. While this shouldn't be so surprising (Wildlands launched on three platforms versus Zelda's two), there are a lot of factors that make it seem unbelievable. The first is that Zelda reportedly has the highest attach rate for a console launch game that the NPD has ever tracked (coming in at around 99%). The second is how you couldn't even casually skim through Twitter while taking a dump and not see a Zelda related post last month.

The third is that this is also on back of some rather tepid reception to Wildlands. Destructoid gave it a 2.5 in our official review, so we clearly weren't hot on it. Fan reception hasn't been great and even critical response has been pretty mixed. Somehow the game shifted more than a million copies (although NPD Group base?s their rank?ings on revenue earned rather than copies shipped).

Another thing to note is that digital sales for Zelda weren't counted, which could close the gap between the two titles. I'm not sure many people bought the game digitally (Nintendo fans tend to fear digital copies), but you never know. Regardless, this is shocking. With how popular Zelda was (and remains), I guess we all just assumed the entire world was busy saving Hyrule instead of?? wandering around in Bolivia.

There are other surprising (and welcome) games in the top 10 that should makes fans happy. Seeing NieR: Automata end up on the list is crazy, even if it is god tier. Also, how the hell is Grand Theft Auto V still in? the top 10? Doesn't eve?ryone already own that game?

You're now limited to 150 mods on Xbox One, 100 on PS4

The issue of mod support in the console versions of Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Special Edition has always been a little strange.

Back in 2015, it was announced that the then-upcoming Fallout 4 would support user-created mods on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the game did get post-launch mod support within about seven months after its launch on the Xbox One side of things, the situation significantly more c??omplex for PS4 users.

Firstly, the patch that would enable mod support for Fallout 4 on the PS4 was hit with numerous delays, before eventually being cancelled outright. Bethesda then confirmed at a later date that yes, both it and the port of Skyrim for the PS4 would include the feature, albeit with some heavy restrictions. Notably, Fallout 4 and Skyrim were unable to dedicate as much disk space to mods on the PS4 as they could on Microsoft's home console. Alongside that??, mods weren't able to utilise any form of external assets.

Well, it seems as if this entire ordeal is not yet over, as Bethesda has now placed even more restrictions on mods for both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

As of the most recent updates for the console versions of both Fallout 4 and the current-gen port of Skyrim, a new limit has been imposed on the number of mods that a player ca??n have active at any one time. This is to go alongside the storage constraints that were previously? thrust upon console mods for Bethesda's open-world sandboxes, and the various limitations to this feature that were mandated by Sony for it to be compatible with the PS4 in the first place.

Essentially, on the Xbox One, players of either Fallout 4 or Skyrim are now only able to run the games with up to 150 mods active at any time. You will be able to install more mods????, however, and you can enable or disable them at your leisure. This number is even smaller on the PS4, which only allows for 100 mods to be active at any given moment.

While these figures may seem somewhat restrictive, a representative from Bethesda has pointed out on the company's forums that this mod cap may change in the future, and was added due to concerns about the overall stability of these t??itles.

"The mod l?imits implemented this week to Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition has been put in place based on our internal testing for stability to the game. With the new caps, some players will not be able to reach the full storage limit for mods, but the additional storage capacity will allow for you to have larger mods within the 150/100 cap. This is a starting point, and it may be adjusted."

Of course, this does further increase the disparity between the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Bethesda's games as far as mod support is concerned. After all, not only do the games have fewer installable mods on Sony's home console, but due to their inability to utilise external assets, they also lack ones that should be deemed as absolute necessities, such as the brilliant "Macho Dragon Mod" for Skyrim.

Considering that a recent Best Buy listing for the Nintendo Switch port of Skyrim has indicated that this version of t?he game will also feature mod support, I do have to wonder what kind of restrictions will be imposed on the feature in the event that it does make it to the upcoming handheld/home console hybrid. This is provided that the listing itself is accurat?e, howeve?r.

Either way, if you hold the opinion that mod support is a significant selling point for these games, you may just want to stick to the PC ports, as they lack these the arbitrary restrictions placed upon the console versions of Bethesda's titles. Then again, it's always possible that Bethesda and Valve may attempt to monetise them on PC again.

Taking on the legend

The beautiful-looking Horizon: Zero Dawn has just gone gold ??and will be launching on February 28 for PS4. Herman Hulst, the m??anaging director over at Guerrilla Games, made the announcement on Twitter along with some words of encouragement and support for the staff involved.

In addition to this announcement, Ashly Burch (sister of Destructoid alumnus Anthony Burch) revealed that she will be voicing the main character in Horizon. Ashly has also voiced characters in Borderlands 2 and Life is Strange to some pre??tty strong critical acclaim, so her talen??t should be put to good use here.

With how similar this game looks to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it will be interesting to see the competition that crops up between Sony and Nintendo fans. I also think it is incredibly smart to launch a few days ahead of Zelda, possibly tipping over some people on the fence about the Switch. Then again, Breath of the Wild is launching on two platforms to Horizon's one.

May its soul battle eternally until Ragnarok

Eurogamer broke the news last week that Nintendo was cycling down its production of the Wii U, possibly as early as this Friday. Nintendo denied these reports to Japanese site IT media, saying it was "not true."

However, the Japanese Wii U site was updated earlier today with new information underneath the Wii U console suggesting that production is scheduled to end in Japa??n. This doesn't give a timeframe, but does show acknowledgement by Nintendo that the Wii U is on its way out.

This move has been rumored since March this year, and it's not surprising that Nintendo wants to focus on the future. Wii U is the first console it's ever sold at a loss. Even though the company launched nearly a year before the competition and has sold over 12.5 million Wii U consoles, it has been solidly in last place for this entire console generation. What's more, smartphones and tablets have been eating into its far more profitable handheld division, though sales saw a spike after Pokémon Go brought lapsed players back to the series.

If you've ever wanted a Wii U, you may want to buy one soon. It's estimated that t?he parts to produce each console cost around $230, so you're not likely to see any discounts deeper than that, even af?ter the Switch launches next Sp?ring. Since the console and its replacement parts won't be manufactured anymore, it's my guess that number is more likely to climb than fall.

It's a strange console, there's no denying that. But I've had some great experiences with mine, and I suspect they'll become hard to find once people start looking back on it with nostalgia rather than contempt. It's hosted some of my favorite games this generation; I still play Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 and Smash Brothers pretty frequently. Sur??e, it was a failure, but a necessary one, paving the way for the Switch. We'll have to wait and see if Nintendo's new direction pans out, but I for one plan on keeping my Wii U and 3DS no matter how the Switch does.

Let the console wars commence!

Microsoft has been running a smear campaign against Sony since the announcement of the PS4 Pro. Its tweet following the livestream detailed how the Xbox One S has a UHD Blu-ray player, somethi?ng Sony decided to leave out of its upcoming console.

Now, Bethesda's announcement that mod support will not be heading to the PS4 has lead Microsoft to take another pot shot. On the Xbox UK Twitter account, one can clearly see Microsoft adding more check marks to system features ??of its console.

I'm not throwing support behind either of these juggernauts, but this kind of stuff is hysterical to me. I always wonder if I'm presenting myself in a professional manner, but I guess even companies will resort to petty insults when the time comes. Like Don Henley wrote, "Kick 'em when they're up, Kick 'em when they're ???down."

Sony does kind of deserve this. It took some cheap shots ?during E3 2013 and has been acting pretty smug as of late. I'll also never forget its response to the high price of the PS3 at launch.

I just woke up, Mark, don't put me back to sleep

Sony did not do the best job of explaining all of the benefits of the PS4 Pro yesterday. We know it won't support UHD Blu-Ray and that most games won't be outputting in native 4K resolution, but those details weren't mentioned at the actual live stream event. Now it looks like we'l?l have some better information.

This may just be an industry fluff piece, but getting PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny to explain the philosophy?? behind the PS4 Pro and learn more about the details of the system definitely clears things up. Apparently smoother framerates for older games is a thing that we can expect to happen. We keep hearing 4K resolution, so I'm not sure what Sony thinks that means.

Still, we get to hear Mark Cerny say, "4K TV penetration," so this vide??o is worth something.

Let's go head to head, spec to spec

Xbox tip?ped its hand the earliest, but Sony was the first to fully show it. Scorpio versus Pro. In this age of incremental console improvements, which of the two big?gest platform-holders has the most impressive new trump card?

We can gander a guess from a technical standpoint. Today, Sony sent out a press release that details all the inner-workings of the Pro. For the Scorpio, we have to go by the E3 announcement video. There's information there, but not the nitty gritty ??????????????????????????that Sony gave us.

Let's get started:

With regard to ??CPU power, both sys??tems have eight cores. The Pro has eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar cores. The Scorpio was just said to have "eight CPU cores." This category's a toss-up for now.

The GPU is the first area where one console has a decided advantage. The Pro featu??res 4.20 teraflops from an AMD Radeon processor. Meanwhile, the Scorpio sports 6.0 teraflops of computing capability. Decided advantage to the Scorpio.

In terms of memory, we don't quite know what to expect. The Pro has 8GB of GDDR5. The problem is that Xbox never made any mention of memory in the Scorpio video. The Xbox One S has 8GB of DDR3, if that means anything. It seems likely that Scorpio will probably match this, but we can't say for sure. Let's just call it undecided for now. (Correction: The Pro's 8GB of GDDR5 memory is only video RA??M. So, it's an unfair comparison to Xbox One S' system RAM. Right now, we don't know what the Pro's system RAM is. Which console does it better is still up in the air, though.)

As far as resolution goes, both systems are?? capable of supporting 4K. Sony made a big point to emphasize everything 4K and HDR?; Xbox simply said "true 4K resolution." However, the Pro is actually more limited at 4K, as it doesn't support UHD Blu-ray. That's something even Xbox One S does. It seems like Scorpio probably wins this one.

The rest of the categories are things that Xbox touched on but PlayStation didn't. Scorpio will be able to render at 60Hz, and it'll have access to 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth. These weren't topics that were broached either during the PlayStation Meeti?ng or in the press release Sony sent out.

Keeping aware of the fact that this is mostly still conjecture, it seems like the Scorpio will probably be the more powerful machine, even if just slightly. The edge in GPU is the most obvious factor. We haven't gotten our hands on either yet, so who really knows? But, these are the known specs of bo?th, thus far.

That being said, Sony holds a huge advantage that has nothing to do with the insides of these machines: It's launching the Pro a full year earlier than Xbox is releasing the Scorpio. It's reminiscent of the Xbox 360/PS3 launches. PS3 was the better machine, but 360 held a commanding share of the market for much of the generation simply because it was the first on the shelves. That could be the case for Pro and Scorpio. It's not always about what's better; sometim??es it's just about what you can buy first.

'I love that console experience'

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that Microsoft is already looking ahead to the next generation co??nsole.

Talking to The Verge about the future of consoles in an age where TVs and mobile devices are becoming smarter, Spencer said: "I fully expect that you’ll see another console from us ?[…] Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future. I’m 100 percent committed to that."

Though S??pencer didn't elaborate on what's next for the Xbox team, he added that he didn't want to "dilute what the Xbox console customer feels" and would like to "expand what we’re able to do ?for more customers."

"I love that console experience," he added. "It’s obviously the core of what Xbox is about, and Xbox One is our most important gami??ng device inside the company. There’s no doubt about that. We also know there are millions and millions of gamers who access Microsoft [in other ways,] whether it’s Windows, their phone, Skype — it could be many different things every day."

Especially on Black Friday

Shopping research group InfoScout has published its post-Black Friday findings as they relate to video game consoles. As you can ??see in th?e chart below, 40% of participating millennials (defined as ages 18-35) buy PlayStation products on your "average day" in October, compared to 48% on Black Friday. Compare this to "middle-aged" consumers (defined as ages 35-55, hi Mom!), who preferred Xbox products both during Black Friday and your "average day."

It's also interesting to note that Nintendo is struggling compared to Xbox and PlayStation among millennials, but commands a greater market share among middle-aged consumers. There's a lot of interesting data here, including the science behind how InfoScout came to this conclusio?n.

"InfoScout established a baseline group of 2,364 people who purchased video game products in October 2015. We then contrasted their purchases to those of 1,020 Americans who purchased a video game, console or accessory during the 2015 Blac??k Friday promotion period (starting at 6PM on Thanksgiving, and running until the end of day Friday)."

The company normally polls from between "more than 300,000 Americans" and "over one million Americans," according to the study page an??d InfoScout?'s 'about' page, respectively. For this study, "the first 250,000 receipts reported from shopping trips on Thanksgiving night and Black Friday were analyzed."

But what would it look like?

Former Xbox boss, Robbie Bach, believes that there will be another generation of consoles...? but they probably won't look, or operate,?? much like they do today. 

Talking to Geekwire, Bach -- who was head of Xbox for over ten years -- said: "the year before PlayStation 4 and Xbox One laun??ched, everybody said the console market was dead, and they wondered why Sony and Microsoft was doing it." 

I think there will be another generation. ??What the console looks like is a very ??interesting question.

“Is it just a game box or is it mo?re? What’s the balance between what an Apple TV is and what an Xbox or a PlayStation 4 is? These are really interesting questions, and?? the teams going to have to wrestle with those. That next generation will be a whole new game.”

Bach goes on to reflect upon the impact of virtual reality in gam?ing, stating that the "key question" will be h??ow manufacturers commercialize the technology.

"I think that the technology and the concept is wicke??d. I mean really powerful, and not just in ??gaming.

“This could be for business, commercial use, retail use. There’s a lot of applications for it. The problem is, right now, you’ve got to walk around looking like a complete goofball wearing this crazy thing on your head. You look?? like you should be in a Star Wars movie. By the way, they have problems with people getting sick using it. There’s certain conditions where it’s really tough. They have to figure out how to commercialize it.”

"My favorite comparison is t??ouch technology on-screen. There was touch technology on the screen five or six, maybe seven years before the iPhone, but the commercialization required an expensive screen device and a stylus. That commercialization never worked. Apple came out with a much less expensive, less precise, but less expensive, comm??ercialization with a finger and it went like that. To me, commercialization is a key element in what’s happening in virtual reality."

That's 25 million PS4s sold since launch

Sony sold 3 million PlayStation?? 4 consoles between April and June 20??15, with more than 25 million PS4 sales since the console launched in November 2012. 

According to the latest Sony financial report, that's up from 2.7m in the same period last year, and 47% more than double the number of Xbox consoles (yeah, that's 360 and One consoles combined) in the same timespan. 

Sony attribu?tes the "significant" increase in sales within the Game &amp; Network Services - a 12 percent year-on-year hike - to PlayStation 4 sales and Japan-frien??dly currency exchange rates, amassing $2.365bn in that April-June period.

The company now expe??cts to shif?t 500,000 more units than originally projected.

What was missing from the financial report? The PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita... which is sad, but not that surprising.

'It's good competition which is good for everybody'

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has acknowledged that the? company must "do better in Europe."

In an interview in the latest Edge Magazine, Spence?r said, "when I lo??ok globally, mainland Europe is definitely an area we want to focus on."

I'm excited about going to Gamescom at the beginning of August, having another press show where we're able to show games that we didn't show [at E3]. So you're going to see brand new games, as well as obviously some repeats, but you're going to see Scalebound, Crackdown, Quantum Break from my friends at Remedy. From a product standpoint, I like where we are. I think the team's doing a great job wit??h the g?ames and building a platform for gamers.

"Sony does a really good job in those markets, and they have a long history - long before we were in this business - and they've earned the success that they get in those regions," Spencer added. "I watch what they do because they do a lot of good things, and I want to make sure that we're being smart about succeeding. And there are places like Latin America where Xbox does really well, and in the US the numbers keep going back?? and forth - it's good competition which I think is good for everybody."

Content-wise, though, I'm excited about this Forza, I'm excited about Tomb Raider, I'm excited about the new Rare game, Sea Of Thieves??… And I think we can do more artful games that I have found resonate more. That's definitely a focus for us.

Yesterday, SCEE president Jim Ryan said that the PlayStation 4 had? a "very significant" share of the console marketplace" - at least 70 percent, and "frequently greater th?an 90 percent" - withi??n continental Europe.

Xbox is kicking off Gamescom festivities one day early with a press briefing on August 4 (4 pm CEST/10 am Eastern). On ??August 4 and 5, it'll also hold a Fanfest, a community event where fans can play upcoming titles without goin?g to the full Gamescom show.

Has Sony "won by a nose"?

Ed Fries -- part of the original team that created the first Xbox way back in 2001 -- thin?ks that Sony's PlayStation 4 is leading the current-gen console war "by a nose."

Fries added that while Microsoft had slashed?? prices recently, it was unlikely to make up the ground lost to Sony way back when the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were first released in late 2013.

That said, Fries -- talking to bizjournals.com -- acknowledged that there was ?everything left to play for given Microsoft and Sony have taken different approaches in the burgeoning development of a??????????????????????????ugmented and virtual reality tech.

But if you were hoping for more subtweets and veiled barbs as the console "war" drags on?, set your face to disappointment.

"The two sides sa?y nice things about each other; they compliment each other’s cool games," Fries said. "It looks to me like most of the excitement is kind of over in the console war for this generation."

"It looks like Microsoft is gain??ing a little traction back, but PS4 got a really early lead that will be h??ard for Microsoft to catch."

Which can?? only be a good thing for us consumers, right?

"I think i??t's good," adds Fries. "I think it keeps prices lower and competition is a?? good thing."

Has Sony won by "a n??ose"? Can Microsof??t turn it all around? Is the console war even a thing any more?
