CORGI!

I have a lot of fond memories from the launch of World of Warcraft. I was never huge into the Warcraft series, but I loved the art style and the lore behind each entry. Getting to play a constantly evolving plot inside of a massive world with ties to the older games felt unique and new. Raids were also not a common practi??ce in MMOs, so that was a pretty big selling point.

Who would have thought that the game would still be going strong 12 years later? Sure, Blizzard doesn't share subscription numbers anymore and most fans kind of loathe Warlords of Draenor, but I doubt we'll ever see the end of this title. Anyone still subscribed has a little incentive to log back in?, as Blizzard is holding an event to celebrate the game's step into puberty??.

Those who log in before November 30 will receive the "12th Anniversary Achievement" and a care package. The package contains 200 Timewarped Badges and an item that increases XP and reputation gains for an hour. There will also be a special quest, some WoW trivi??a and the ability to pu??rchase a Corgi Pup companion (aww!!!).

While I feel this is kind of lame,considering the magnitude with which World of Warcraft shook up the standard MMO formul??a, something is always bet??ter than nothing. Also, that Corgi is cute and used to be an unofficial mascot of Destructoid, so it makes me think of alumni Dale North. I bet he is looking down on us from heaven (despite not being dead).

Perseus the dog is made of star stuff

Sure, there is also a chimpanzee named Professor Gagayev, but we all know that Perseus the Dog is the star here. He's got valor! He reminds me of Missile from Ghost Trick, except I'm pretty sure Perseus is a ??corgi rather than a Po??meranian. He is a corgi in a space suit.

Perseus and Professor are space explorers in this point-and-click adventure, and although it looks a little slow, I can get behind the feeling of solitude that should be present in games about space exploration. Tales of Cosmos is currently seeking approval on Steam Greenlight, and is only planned to release for Windows.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! Corgi game. Cor??gi action/adventure game. Corgi wears a cape. Yes. I'm pretty much losing my mind right now.

All is right in the world now, thanks to Tim Rogers and Action Button Entertainment. His latest, Tuffy the Corgi and the Tower of Bones, is now out for PS Vita. The goal is to collect all 108 bones by jumping and running your little corgi up??? the Tower of Bones.

With simple control, speed run appeal, a??nd a Welsh Corgi as a hero, I'm pretty much set?? for life, folks. ;

It's about time that the greatest ??dog breed ever gets the sta??rring role in a videogame. Thank you, Tim Rogers.

Microsoft sends word that they've announced more than 45 new apps for Xbox O?ne and Xbox 360 globally today. Their plan is to get the en??tertainment stuff out of the way to make E3 all about games. 

They're now up to a total of 225 apps worldwide for Xbox. New ones include MLG, Vine, and Twitter. Vine surfing is divine.? To be able to do that on your couch is great. Here's a corgi Vine to celebrate.

Corgi!

Chrono Rider is a 2D action RPG with gameplay inspired by 16-bit classics. Its early-access beta starts later this year, followed by a full release in March 2015. This game mixes action/p??latforming and RPG elements with time travel concepts. And it's about a corgi.

Chrono Rider's hero, Captain Corgi, can travel ?through time and space, just as any good corgi should be able to. He has a space suit, of course. Oh, and a jet pac?k. Corgi can pilot spaceships and mechs, too. That's all great, but they had me at corgi.

Two-person dev team Korion Studios launched a Kickstarter for Chrono Rider that is currently fully funded with six da??ys to go.?? It sounds like they're aiming to show off their work at PAX in San Antonio.

Cosmic DJ is now available on Steam Early Access for $5.99. The musical sequencer game lets people? of all musical skill level create sweet jams, against some crazy stages. One stage involves launching a corgi head off into space. Seriously the visuals are nuts, just loo??k at the announcement trailer!

It's the best dog!

Upcoming game Four Sided Fantasy is a puzzle game that plays with screen wrapping, like their previous game The Fourth Wall. If you haven't seen it, check it out -- it's gorgeous, and it might scramble your brain if you watch long enough. Oh, and it's going strong on Kickstarter right now.

Speaking of Kickstarter, one of the newer added tiers has an in-game pet dog as a reward. They designed four because they say they couldn't decide on one, and they're letting the backers vote on which dog makes it into the final game. But after creator Logan Fieth sent me the above image last night, there was no way I was going to let a silly pug or?? husky win. 

So I'm thinking you should first get in on the Four Sided Fantasy Kickstarter, as this game needs to be made, and only has five days left to hit its goal. And then you should vote for the corgi. Please. I mean, look at his head!

Hands-on from PAX East

This past weekend, I found myself running through the crowds of the PAX East show floor, pushing people out of the way to get to the Indie Megabooth, where Cosmic DJ was waiting for me. As a musician and a fan of music games I would have sought it out anyway. But I found out via T????witter that the game features a corgi, so I took off running.

If you want to get technical, iPad title Cosmic DJ is a musical sequencer. For you music nerds, there's both a step sequencer and input pads, letting you grid up or play in a multitude of instruments and sounds. But, beyond the definition, there's nothing technical about t?his game. It's all about fun with its corgi rockets and horse lasers and crunchy 8-bit graphics, and it's open to people of any musical skill level. Don't let the tech talk scare you off -- it's super friendly.

Cosmic DJ lets you tap out beats, instruments, and even sound effects freely, by using either the sequencing grid or four tap pads. You're free to do whatever you'd like for the looping 32 beats, picking from a selection of sounds that range from plucky basses do dogs woofing, listening in as the loop comes back around. The game encourages you to experiment w?ith sounds and patterns through prompts, and when it sees you've done enough, it moves you onto the next part of the stage, where you put in more sounds and patterns, working it up until you have a full song that can be exported and even uploaded to be shared. There are no rules, and improvisation is encouraged.

With each pattern you create along the way, a small bit of a story is revealed in one of six stages, with the music you've made serving as the underscore for the tale. These stories are pretty weird, and are ac??companied by so?me strange and hilarious imagery.

Take the corgi stage, for example. Cosmic DJ's Kat Wenske told me that this stage was based on her own corgi, which is adorably named Potato Pancake Wisirup. CUTE! Wenske says that Potato was happy to do some green screen filming at first, but then he became a bit nervous, and you can see that in the stage's imagery?. 

From what I could gath??er of the stage's story, the corgi's head detaches ??from its body and becomes a sort of videogame boss while its body becomes lost in space. Your music helps the corgi out somehow, I think. All I know is at the end the corgi's head blasts off like a rocket. 

I was too busy laughing at flying dog heads and woofy beat drops at first, but once I got into the zone, I was making some pretty slick beats with Cosmic DJ. Again, it's silly and totally open to players of any skill level, but if you know what you're doing, Cosmic DJ can also be a pretty solid music making tool. And with its export tools your?? creation can be shared on Soundcloud. There are even tools to create your own album art!

Cosmic DJ is a fantastic rhythm gaming experience on its own, even without the inclusion of the greatest dog b??reed ever. Win/win. It's coming to iOS very soon.

Call of Duty: Ghosts could really go next-gen with this

I'm sure you've heard about the Call of Duty: Ghosts dog by now. My first impression? 'Ooh, doggie!' My second, o??f course, is that it should have been a corgi.

I'm not alone in that. Talented French artist and fellow corgi fan Diana Da Costa created this adorable work (shown above) after seeing Ghosts' dog gameplay at work alongside colle??agues. One colleague owns a Pembroke Welsh ??Corgi, so they soon found themselves throwing around corgi DLC jokes. 

She calls this work "Call of Corgi," but also likes Call of toutou (childish french word for 'dog'), Collar of Duty, Cor?gi of Duty, and so on. Let's hope Infinity Ward will hear the call of corgi and give us so??me DLC!

Da Costa caught the corgi obsession from this colleague and plans to own one of her own by year's end. She's aiming for a Cardi?gan Welsh Corgi with blue eyes. Nice pick.

On the game itself, she says that she dug the trailer and its mood, and that it was a nice surprise to see?? the dog in the game. We are ?both looking forward to more footage of the dog.

And she has a request: "Infinity Ward, if you're reading this: pl??ease, consider the corg?i."

Slowly but surely

Japan has been in a gaming rut for the past half decade and we've all felt it. But last year was not so bad. I remember telling peers at Tokyo Game Show 2012 that things were looking up fo?r Japan and ??its game makers. The future actually seemed a bit brighter for a change.

It's not huge growth, but Enterbrain data shows that the Japanese retail game segment grew by 1.2 percent last year, which shows growth of $4.6 billion for the fiscal year. According to the data published in this weekend's Nikkei, hardware sales were up, helping the market out a bit. Japan can than?k the 3DS XL, Wii U, and Sony price cuts on their PS3 and Vita.

When it comes to s??oftware, sales are actually down just a bit for Japan. Still, growth is growth, right? 

Even with that, Tech in Asia noticed t?hat the social gaming and videogames m?arkets are now about the same size. Hmm.

Sounds like a life sim to us

A new Japanese trademark from Square Enix nails down the name "Fantasy Life." My mind immediately jumped to a game where you'd dive into piles of fluffy, squirmy corgi puppies, but it's probably something more along the lines of what source Siliconera is guessing -- something like a life sim, like Harvest Moon, or better yet, Animal Crossing.

But all we know r?ight now is that thi??s is to be a videogame. I'm hoping for something on the console side over mobile.

I demand a do-over

I'm on vacation this week. I was looking to take some down time before this crazy year for v??ideogames officially kicks off. With both PAX East and GDC coming up later this month, I'm trying to rest up, but this busted corgi avatar had me hopping out of bed to say my piece.

The newly added Dogs and Puppies avatar pack for Xbox Live Arcade would normally be something positive, but its "corgi" puppy avatar is so ugly and off that I can't he?lp b?ut be disappointed.

What is up with its legs? Where are the cute, stubby paws corgis are known for?  And flopped ears? Corgis have pointed, beautiful ears -- not those abominations. Oh, and the tail. Though things are changing, most Pembroke Welsh Corgis have no tail -- they're either docked or tailless. If the dog had its tail, it would be long and fuzzy, and?? not g?ross like this.

I'm going to be straight with you on this blog post. I like Dance Central 3 and all (I got a copy for my niece for Christmas), and Carly Rae Jespen is great, but I really just ?posted this story to have another excuse to share the corgi pa?rody music video that I've watched probably two dozen times already. 

I like this parody so much tha??t I bark over the original song whenever I hear it. I hold my dogs' faces to the screen to force them to watch it too, hoping that they'll someday learn to pitch their barks to help me do other pop? song parodies.

We've popped open a copy of the Forza Horizon Limited Collector's Edition so that you can peek inside for yourself. While the casi??ng is nice (a steelbook and slip case), the innards of this package aren't much to look at as all the goods ar??e digital.

Suddenly, corgis.

I don't know a lot about Rift, but I do know a lot about corgis. The world's most perfect animal w??ill be making an appearance in one of the scheduled events for the Rift Extra Life marathon for the Children's Hospital Network.

Rift Junkies says that this event will close something called a "Corgi Rift," and will have players giving treats to "royal Corgis." And if this didn't sound amazing enough to corgi fans, the achievement for doing this gives the suffix "of House Fluffington." Trion even made a reference to a popular corgi meme, "Suddenly Corgis."

Amazing.

Is putting the American flag on the ground wrong? I hope not, bec?ause I just put? it on my dog. Disrespectful? Wait, look closer.

We can't get too wrapped up in flag law and technicalities as Ubisoft did a number on this particular flag they just sent us, giving our ol' Stars and Stripes a bit of an Assassin's Creed III upgrade.

As we're coming up on Independence Day, I kind of want to fly it outside of my house. Then again, that insignia could confuse someone, and my house might be burned down because of it. Nah, I'll just leave it o?n my dog. He's feeling patriotic and face stabby.
