The week-long trial is playable from December 30 to January 5

Full game trials are something I'd like?? to see more of in general and also specifically for mu??ltiplatform games. Sometimes you want to see – and feel – how a particular game runs on Switch, y'know?

This week, Nintendo is hosting another one of its infrequent Nintendo Switch Online game trials. If you have a membership and you're in a kart-racing mood, you can play the full version of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled from Wednesday?, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. PT until Tuesday, January 5 at 11:59 p.m. PT.

By "full version," they mean you play CTR Nitro-Fueled alone, locally, or online – the latter is a bloodbath! This is one of those games that a lot of folks are be??wilderingly good at. They're monsters. Trust no one.

If you're w??ondering if this limited-time promo is worth the trouble,?? I'd say so. The file size is 9.3 GB.

Crash Team Racing isn't currently on sale on Switch, but it's down to $14 on PS4 and Xbox One.

'No additional content in the works'

If you're still playing Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and have been thinking "I wonder when the next update is," you should probably get your expectations i??n check.

That update this past March? That was seemingly the end for our little Bandicoot racer. Taking to Twitter, developer Beenox just clarified that "the march update with the Beenox Pack was our final update to the game." They state that "there is no addi?tional content in the works," due to "being hard at work on some other incredible projects."

Apparently, Beenox was scooped up to help with the N.Verted challenge mode in Crash Bandicoot 4. This is the case with a lot of Activision studios, who are tapped to help out on cross-projects all the time: Call of Duty being a major franchise to utilize that strategy (alongside of Destiny, when Activision had control of it).

They've also been tapped for "some other things they can't quite mention yet," which are hopefully Crash Bandicoot related. Keep the revival going!

Find the hidden Beenox crates to play as the Iron Checkpoint

Some good news, some ba??d news. Let's start w??ith the former if you don't mind.

The seasonal events have wrapped up, but Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled isn't done. Beenox released a free content update today, and along with a thank-you care package, ??there's also a wonderfully dumb secret character to unlock. You know the checkpoint crates? Well, now you can race as one.

This ?isn't some stupid early April Fools' Day bit. It's real!

To unlock the Iron Checkpoint Crate character, you'll need to smash Beenox crates scattered across tracks. If you enjoy hunting down collectibles, that should be a fun assignment. According to the Reddit community, which has?? begun compiling t?he hidden crate locations, you don't need to complete races.

If that sounds like way too much work for a gag, you should still log into Nitro-Fueled when you get a chance – you'll earn a free Beenox Pack containing Geary and Crunch (if you haven't gotten them yet) and Beenox?-themed cosmetics including a kart and skins for Crash, Cortex, Crunch, and Ge??ary.

The Crash Team Racing Beenox Pack is free

T?he studio is running Wumpa Challenges, Ghost Hunt, Golden Wumpa Hunt, and time trials – including data based on the developers' best times – so there's plenty left to do if you've been on a ??break.

As for the bad news, I regret to inform you that Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled has gone ahead and added Baby Cortex and Baby N. Trophy to the Pit Stop store. I don't like losing in kart racers, but I especially loathe losing to baby characters. The othe??r roster addition, the Lab Assistant, gets a pass.

Baby Cortex

Those gums get me every time. I can't cope.

To end on a positive note, the de?velopers also redesigned Rilla Roo, and you can keep the old version. I love when creators go out of their way like that. I wasn't even aware peopl?e felt so strongly about him.

The Gasmoxia Grand Prix starts February 20

Beenox is capping off Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled with one final event – the Gasmoxia Grand Prix – on February 20, 2020, at 7:0??0 a.m. Pacific. If you've only dabbled in these high-stakes online events over the last eight months, it'll be tough to show up now and compete against battle-hardened player??s who never put the game down. That said, you might want to log in to try some newly-added time trials.

The Gasmoxia Grand Prix includes a new track (Drive-Thru Danger), another playable characte??r (Emperor Velo), and three new karts (the Void Manta, Velo Chopper, and Galactic Cruiser), along with Pit Stop cosmetic items like Space Spyro and Astronaut Kong. Here's the full reward rundown:

Gasmoxia Grand Prix rewards

??As for time trials, there's a cou??ple of things to note.

Every track will have a Nitros Oxide and Emperor Velo time trial to beat, and once the Gasmoxia Grand Prix wraps up, the developers at Beenox plan to post ??their personal bests. That's when things really get scary. If you manag?e to outpace Nitros and Velo, you'll earn champion decals for your trouble.

Be??????????????????????????enox also confirmed that Gasmoxia is the "final opportunity" to unlock the Champion Kart. As usual, the kart is given to playe??rs in the top five percent of the Grand Prix leaderboards. It's now or never.

Once the event ends, the studio intends to continue supporting Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled with a ?challenge system (so you can keep earning Wumpa coins) and new characters, karts, and skins.

I know microtransactions soured people on Nitro-Fueled, but looking back at the developers' shee?r ??output – 40 tracks, 12 arenas, 51 characters, and 300-some character skins – it's been quite a ride.

I love Mario Kart, but it's n?ice to see someone else step up. (Now if only Sega could do the same.)

Time trials and challenges are next

Eight Grand Prix events down, one to go. In a blog post today, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled dev?eloper Beenox announced that while it's not done adding content, the next Grand Prix will be the last.

Going forward, Beenox plans to keep CTR players active with a new challenge system. After the final Gra??nd Prix, you'll be able to earn Wumpa coins in daily, weekl?y, and monthly challenges that are "relevant to all game modes." The developers are also going to post time trials with their best scores on each track, and if you can manage to beat all of their times, you'll unlock a "special reward."

They aren't about to shut down the Pit Stop, either. The store is getting new characters, karts, skins, decals, and paint jobs. You can expect to see old seasonal content return, and if there's a particular item you're after, you'll be able to refresh the Pit S?top selection "up to two times per? day."

If you've managed to hang in there since launch, you deserve a pat on the back and some time off. It can be exhausting keeping up with ongoing games – especially ones as tense as Crash Team Racing.

I can't get over how many characters are in Nitro-Fueled. That roster is packed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ends the year on top

The final UK video game chart listings for 2019 have been released, and there has been little movement over the last seven days. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remains in the number one spot, closely followed by Electronic Arts' FIFA 19 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Nintendo has three major titles in the Top Ten in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion, and Pokemon Sword. Take 2's Grand Theft Auto V has returned at number six - and, as a side-note, is also the most downloaded? ??game of December in Europe. 2K Games' Borderlands 3, Activision's Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and Ubisoft's Just Dance 2020 round out the Top Ten.

The real story of 2019 has been the continued decline of physical sales, with almost all major sequels seeing huge number drops on their previous entries. As reported by the number-crunchers ov?er at GamesIndustry.biz, physical sale??s as a whole have dropp??ed almost 20% on last year, and it seems that these numbers are likely to fall further in 2020.

The UK Charts themselves are also undergoing a ?change. As of next week, European body GSD hopes to compile a new chart that includes both physical and digital sales numbers. The unfortunate issue here is that digital sales must be volunteered directly by the publishers, with companies such as Nintendo and Bethesda holding out. Until everybody is on board, a fully-accurate representation of sales figures might not ever be truly possible.

Guess who's back? Back again...

The final edition of the UK Charts for 2019 has been released, revealing that this year's Christmas number one is Activision's blockbuster shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fending off strong opposition from Electronic Arts' FIFA 20 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Nintendo has had a very successful Holiday period in the UK, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Pokemon Sword all holding high Top Ten positions, while numerous other Switch releases hover in and around the Top 20. Party favourite Just Dance 2020 also sits in the Top Ten, ironically having a seemingly bigger impact for Ubisoft this year than its awful AAA megabucks shooter Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

The REAL story, however, is the return of perennial UK Charts poster boy Crash Bandicoot, who has not one, but two titles smashing their way into the Top Ten in platforming compendium N.Sane Trilogy and kart racing remake Nitro-Fueled. Nice to see the mad marsupial back on the grid, it wouldn't be a true B?ritish yuletide season without Crash Bandicoot, a Bond movie on the T.V., and the impending threat of a economically disastrous new year.

Merry Christmas.

Welcome to the Karting Karnival

As we move away from Halloween and toward the inevitable clutches of winter, Crash Team Racing is determined to keep things vibrant. Now that the limited-time Spooky Grand Prix has wrapped, we're getting an all-o??ut ocular assault of technicolor radiance. Welcome to the N??eon Circus.

On November 8, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled starts its Neon Circus Grand Prix. Racing whiz Pasadena O'Possum from Crash Tag Team Racing is added as a new character. Accompanying her is Ebenezer Von Clutch. There's a third racer in the mix too. Big brute Koala Kong is unlocked for anyone who makes it through the bronze tier of Grand Prix rewar??ds.

Speaking of, here's a look at all of the Neon C??irc??us Grand Prix rewards:

Koala Kong plays a larger role?? than merely a new kart racer; he's the host of this whole event. The Koala Carnival track is his own invention, a challenge of dexterity and agility that he certainly doesn't look equipped for. But that game where you hit the pad with the mallet and the thing shoots up and rings the bell? He'd be real good at that.

Neon Circus also welcomes a new game mode, Ring Rall?y. The idea behind Ring Rally is to survive as long as possible against a clock that's always winding down. However, collecting rings adds to the timer, mea??????????????????????????ning that they're crucial in keeping the karting alive. With each successive lap, the rings get smaller and your chances of survival go down.

Some miscellaneous features of Neon Circus are three new karts (Nitro Bumper Kart, Pressurizer, and Daredevil), a bunch of cosmetics i?n the Pit Stop, the Neon Circus Champion kart and decal for anyone crazy enough to finish in the Grand Prix's top five percent (the kart is the same as always but the decal is unique to the event), and the adventure mode where you can unlock King Chicken. I only mention this as an excuse to share this excellent?? screenshot:

The Neon Circus Grand Prix ends on December 8. After that, it's on t??o the Winter Festival and the Gingerbread Joyride track.

Trying to raise $1 million for the COD Endowment

For the past 10 years, Activision has spearheaded a charitable mission to help place veterans in new jobs once they transition to back to civilian life. Named the Call of Duty Endowment, this organization is responsible for helping appro??ximately 54,000 former military members start new?? careers. They want to get to 100,000 by 2024.

Activision is letting a couple of its franchises co-mingle for the good of the Endowment. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is getting a Call of Duty-themed airp?lane kart. The Fireha?wk is the only airplane-like kart in the game. It's a $5 add-on, and all proceeds go directly to the Call of Duty Endowment.

It won't be around forever, though. Activision's pulling?? it once it raises $1 million -- presumably at 200,000 sales (although maybe more if it's after Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony take their cut from storefront sales). Act quick if you want a unique kart that goes toward a good cause.

Here's the updated Grand Prix schedule for 2019

There's hardly enough time to keep up with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled's ongoing Grand Prix events, but then again, that's the whole idea. That's by design. Like just about any other big online-centric game, if you don't make a point to stay on top of things, you're going to be left in the dust. Some days, that feels great. There's always new stuff to unlock! But? other days, it's exhausting. It never ends.

Crash Team Racing developer Beenox outlined the n??ext Grand Prix events that'll close out the year.

Up first in Octob??er, the Spooky Grand Prix marks the return of Nina Cortex and adds a rather nicely-lit track called Nina's Nightmare along with her Skull Rider kart. I love a good Halloween tie-in.

The October event for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is the Spooky Grand Prix

For a high-res look at all of the October rewards and Pit Stop items jump to the gallery below.

In November, CTR will move onto the Neon Circus Grand Prix with a Carnival stage and, presumably, Pasadena O'Possum. That's what the silhouet?te looks like, ?right? Any other guesses?

The last Nitro-Fueled Grand Prix of the year, Winter Festival, will unwrap the Gingerbread Joyride track, the Nitro Sleigh kart, and a mysterious character with antlers in December. Then, we sleep.

It's a shame t?o see all of this cool stuff lined up while microtransactions gnaw away at the ga??me.

On a brighter note, CTR Nitro-Fueled is getting some across-the-board enhancements. You'll now be able to pick any Driving Style for any character (including a new Drift styl?e), the 2x Wumpa Coins bonus will extend to all game modes for your first 30 minutes of playtime each day, and AI drivers will stop using the N. Tropy Clock and those dang Warp Orbs in online matches.

Lastly, the game has a new cup: the Lost Cup. It includes Oxide Station,?? Clockwork Wumpa, Twilight Tour, and Prehistoric Playground. The latter two were Grand Prix tracks.

Classic adventure finds new success decades later

It may be over 25 years since it first blessed us with its amazing adventure, but it seems that the video gaming community is still ready and willing to accept The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening ?into i??ts heart. The Switch remake of the 1993 Game Boy classic has debuted sat number one of the UK Charts.

Link's desert island epic topples Gearbox shooter Borderlands 3, which drops into second place. Amazingly, Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still going full throttle, rounding out the Top Three and even overtaking Microsoft's Gears 5. ??In fact the Top Ten is mostly an alternating mi??x of ultra-cute characters and extreme violence. Such is life.

Elsewhere in the charts, Maximum Games' imaginatively-titled Truck Driver just missed out on a Top Ten spot, debuting at number 11, while Bandai Namco's Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Switch port appears at number 23, with the PS4 ??remaster of the gorgeous anime RPG landing at number 26.

Popular platform star takes to the raceway

Activision's racer remake Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is getting revved up for its next Grand Prix event, which sees players ?grind out races and challenges in order to unlock new gear, customisation options, and characters for their garage. This time around, we'll see a familiar face on the starting grid, as Spyro the Dragon is going to be one of this event's guest stars.

The Spyro & Friends Grand Prix event - which begins this weekend - will offer Spyro himself, along with Gnasty Gnorc and Hunter the Cheetah as unlockable characters, each with their own slick roadsters. Also up for the grabs are the usual glut of decals, stickers and paint jobs. The update is also bringing an all-new track to the party, Spyro Circuit, which is comprised of recognisable items, characters and locations from the classic Spyro the Dragon games.

The Spyro & Friends Grand Prix begins August 30. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is available now on PS4, Xbox One and Nint?end??o Switch.

I’m not proud of how tolerant I used to be of microtransactions in general but that’s all the more reason it’s cathartic to write pieces like this

Leading up to Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled’s release, I shared in a Quickpost that its new skins reminded me of a typical, microtransaction-based cosmetic system. I wanted to see these cosmetics as an addition to the original game’s content. But given Activision’s recent history of adding distastefu??l ?microtransactions into remakes of old games, I assumed the worst. Regardless of whether they'd be loot boxes or cosmetic-only or anything else, I’ve b??ecome exhausted of them, and I know I will always en?joy retail games more without them.

To my pleasant surprise, Nitro-Fueled launched without any such purchases. At the time, I had thought that Activision heeded the public outcry against microtransactions in paid games, backpedaled on whatever purchases it was planning to add, and neglected to remove the design surrounding them. I almost bought Nitro-Fueled to get in on its online events while they were still new, only deciding against it as I try to wait for more price drops on big game releases. It took only a month after release for Activision to announce that m?i?crotransactions are coming in a future patch. If I weren't so disheartened, my past self would mayb?e have gloated at my present self for being wrong on that front.

In retrospect, I should have expected this given the company’s similar treatment of recent Call of Duty launches. But my emotional rollercoaster of skepticism, relief, and disgust put into perspective why this emerging trend in marketing leaves such a horrible taste in my mouth. Nitro-Fueled’s in-game purchases themselves aren’t the most distasteful in the industry you're just buying Wumpa Coins you can (slowly) earn in-game but sneaking them in after launch is the most blatantly anti-consumer thing I&rsq?uo;ve seen.

At a glance, it’d be weird for any game that sells microtransactions to omit them on launch. According to many players, Nitro-Fueled’s cosmetic currency drop rate and rotating shop inventory resembled a freemium game’s economy too much for it to not have been built with microtransactions in mind. The whole reason micros exist is to make extra money, and ?they don’t cost a lot of time and money to develop like traditional DLC. In theory, one would make the most out of micro sales by including them from day one.

But tha?t theory assumes micros unanimously coerce consumers into spending more, never less. Most gaming communities, especially ours, are full of people who will proudly boycott any game that features them. These boycotts don’t outweigh the overwhelming profit, but there is a tangible cost to consumers knowing that a game will have microtransactions. Whether you hate micros or are indifferent to them, I’ve never met anyone who gets more excited to buy a game after learning they can spend more on micros. If you have…maybe get them a financial advisor. Or a therapist. Or both.

It’s little wonder that Activision wouldn’t want potential customers to know Nitro-Fueled would have them, but that just raises more red flags. While I don’t expect marketing to highlight all of a product’s problems (if any), consumers should know about any additional purchases tacked onto whatever product they’re buying. Yet Activision kept mum on Nitro-Fueled's micros until well after it had stormed the sales charts, even though it hyped up every other addition ranging from the online Grand Prix to new animations. Interviews with Activision developers who said that it woul?dn&rsq?uo;t have microtransactions h?ave made this abrupt annou??ncement even more scandalous.

Personally, I’m inclined to give these unnamed developers the benefit of the doubt and assume they believed what they said at the time. Regardless, that quote is just as damning for the publisher’s handling of this either way. Activision allowed the misconception that Nitro-Fueled wouldn’t have m?icrotransactions t??o spread, and it never bothered to correct that belief.

Unfortunately, Activision isn’t the only company to sneak in micros, but it is probably the biggest and most prominent repeat offender to do so concerning monetization. Another recent example is Bethesda’s Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which stealth-launched with micros in tow. Most of my criticisms here apply to that as well, but Youngblood's micros were on display from day one. Customers could immediately notice and share that news if they knew to look for it. After Nitro-Fueled'?s launch, we could only guess and assume that micros would come later, at least those of us who we??re skeptical enough.

Again, I should have anticipated something like this, but that’s a part of the problem. Consumers like myself assume that if we aren’t told anything about it, a retail game’s default monetization model is a single-purchase that might have add-on content packs. We don’t expect that model to change only one month after a product’s release. The only reason I should have to think otherwise is in my distrust of the publisher’s track record, and if I have to distrust the company I'm considering giving my money to then maybe I'm considering a bad decision. For instance, Activision slipped loot boxes into Black Ops 4 as part of a larger update. That ploy also won the company universal backlash and yet here w??e are aga??in.

Activision not only demonstrated its awareness of consumers’ opinions on microtransactio??ns but that it is willing to use their distaste of micros to mislead them into buying a game with micros. That should be the textbook definition of anti-consumer business practice. And you know what? I’m gonna say the s-word, and I will not apologize for it. This is the prime form of industry bullshit.

When will we get a Lasagna Cat game?

While Lyle he?ads towards a bold new direction of planetary genocide, here's what's been happening in video games this past week:

  • Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is introducing microtransactions because of course!
  • Some new trailers for The Surge 2 and Control!
  • Garfield Kart is back for lap two and more!

I respect Garfield. He hates Mondays, Nermal, and Odie (most of the time). He has a simple enough routine. He knows sleeping most of the day is t?he best way to spend it. While Lyle, on the other ?hand, is off trying to vengeance half the known universe. Meanwhile, Garfield has no need for this because he's already syndicated in newspapers around the globe and the universe will soon follow.

While Lyle keeps losing the power orb to the denizens of the internet, Garfield is getting a new kart racer. Lyle couldn't even defeat the Amish, meanwhile, Garfield had a comic strip that involved Jon drinking a "protein-enriched drink." Basically, Garfield is beyond the need for a power or??b or interdimensional domination. He continues to live his best life by keeping things simple.

Discharged question of the week: Do you hate Mondays?

You just need to clear the Bronze tier

It wouldn't be a proper kart racer without cutesy baby characters running amok. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled's second Grand Prix event Back N. Time runs from August 2 to August 25 with a new track, Prehistoric Playground, and fre??sh rewards to unlock throughout the competitive online season.

As before with the Nitro Tour Grand Prix, the general idea is that you'll race your heart out, complete challenges to earn those coveted Nitro Points, and rank up across the Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers. Doing so will unlock up to 18 new cosmetic items, karts, and characters, but that's easier said than done. Rewards this season include Baby T, "Fake" Baby T (Crash lore is weird), and the Mammoth kart.

Here's a quick r???ecap of the Back N. Time Grand Prix rewards and challenges.

Once again, there is a Champion Kart and a Signature Decal reward available to those who?? finish in the top five percent of the Grand P?rix leaderboards. You people are maniacs. I'm jealous!

While the actual Grand Prix events are free updates for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (and that's great to se??e), this next part is decidedly less feel-good: microt?ransactions are coming in August.

"Starting in early August, players will have the option to purchase Wumpa Coin bundles from their game console stores to supplement the Coins they earn by playing," according to Activision. "This option won't change the game's core mechanics – players will still earn Wumpa Coins by p??laying the game in any mode, just as before. They will just able to purchase additional coins if they choose." You hate to see it.

On that note, during the Back N. Time Grand Prix, the Pit Stop will be stocked with Baby Crash and Coco and the very Back to the Future-inspired Probulot 2000 vehicle from Crash Tag Team Racing.

Looking further out, Spyro will join Crash Team Racing in the third Grand Prix. The developers have also teased the arrival of other racers inc?luding N. Brio, Nina Cortex, and ?Komodo Moe.

Boosting in more ways than one

Activision's PS1 remake Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is already runnin??g victo?ry laps on multiple platforms, having been received positively by critics and fans. However, the classic kart racer is still suffering from some niggling issues, with a new patch hoping to iron out these creases.

First and foremost, the Nintendo Switch 1.05 update will be confronting the ongoing woes with Nitro-Fueled's sluggish load times. Utilising the Switch hardware's boost mode (which temporarily overclocks the console's CPU) the new update should hopefully allow budding racers to get on the starting grid a whole lot fast?er.

Across all platforms, the new update will a??lso improve various elements of online play, including stabil?ity, lobby population and the frequency of random course selection. Various recent exploits, pertaining to power-up cooldowns and lap manipulation, will also be stamped out, hopefully eradicating some mid-race shenanigans.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is availab??le now on PS4, Xbox One ?and Nintendo Switch.

Time Trials

Some PS4 players, currently grinding out their fastest runs in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, have unfortunately come across a save corruption bug. The bug appe??ars to kick in once the time trial mode's "ghost data" surpasses a certain size, which can cause the save file to go a bit doo-lally.

Developer Beenox are now aware of the issue and are currently working on a patch to remove it from the game. A fix is expected to arrive as part of this week's new update, bringing the first wave of Grand Prix awards to the cartoonish kart racer. Until the pa??tch's implementation, it i??s being suggested that players hold off on the Time Trial mode.

As an apology for the glitch, Beenox will also roll out 2,500 wumpa fruit (CTR's in-game currency). To activate the bonus, players just need to jump into the?? game before July 4, complete a single race, then visit the Pit Stop. The bonus fruit should then be added to your account within 24 hours.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is available now on PS4, Xbox O?ne, a?nd Nintendo Switch.

First things first: unlock Tawna

Things are heating up in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. This week's update marks the start of the first Grand Prix online event. Along with the chance to race on a new track, Twilight Tour, the frantic game is offering rewards karts, skins, and characters as an incentive to stick with CTR throughout July.

The Nitro Tour Grand Prix runs in Crash Team Racing from July 3 to July 28. As you can see in t?he roadmap, there will be rewards at regular intervals as you earn Nitro Po??ints for clearing Grand Prix challenges. To participate, you'll need to play online. It's a limited-time, get-in-here-now sorta event.

Notable rewards include the Bandibuggy Kart, the Rocket Kart, and the playable ch??aracter Tawna.

The Full Crash Team Racing Nitro Tour Grand Prix rewards roadmap

Another area worth mentioning is the Pit Stop – the store will have new wares while the Grand Prix is running. You'll be able to spend your Wumpa Coins on the Nitro Squad (formerly the Trophy Girls).

The best of the best Crash Team Racing players will be able to claim the Champion Kart and Signature Decal. I?f you think you can make it into the top five percent on the leaderboard, it's all yours.

While it seems like it'll be a struggle to get the most sought-after prizes, I am definitely into the idea of online events that keep the community focused and engaged. Crash Team Racing really wants us to stick around.? The launch was a wonderful starting point, but Beenox will have to keep at it.

Two other Grand Prix events are confirmed for this season of Nitro-Fueled. The next event after Nitro Tour is going to be Back N. Time, complete with baby charac??ters, and then it's the Spyro Grand Prix.

Victory lap

It's been a little over a week since I first started ripping up the roads in Activision's latest nostalgia-tickling remake Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. This new release already destined for long-term success given the constant sales peaks of similar titles Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy takes another classic PlaySt??ation release and spruces it up for modern platforms.

In my Review-in-Progress, I talked of how first impressions were very good, with Nitro-Fueled immediately presen??ting the player with luscious visuals, great characters, and some infectious racing action. A week later, my feelings are pretty much the same, even i??f a few minor potholes have appeared on the race track.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled review

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (PS4 [reviewed], Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)
Developer: Beenox
Publisher: Activision
Released: June 21, 2019
MSRP: $39.99

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled comes to us courtesy of developer Beenox, whose resume consists mainly of PC ports of Activision's Call of Duty and Skylanders titles. But the studio has really come into its own with Nitro-Fueled, ?producing a fun and faithful remak?e of Naughty Dog's 1999 best-seller.

On an aesthetic level, Nitro-Fueled is an absolute delight. The roster of well-known heroes, villains, and ancillary characters from Crash Bandicoot's wild universe are recreated with delightful new models, given life through amusing animations. From Coco and Ripper to Pinstripe and Polar, every character is a joy to behold. It's a shame that the vocals aren't quite as fleshed out, with each character only spouting a few repetitive lines of dialogue each during the races themselves. From a gameplay standpoint, Nitro-Fueled's design definitely seems to favour the heavier characters, but, after ?a little practice, I had my boy Ripper Roo taking the chequered flags left, right, and center.

The 30-plus tracks also feel flush with colour and are brimming with life. Whether skidding out on the sands, gunning through crazy laboratories, or burning through a dragon's underground kingdom, racecourses new and old have been expertly realised with a kaleidoscopic palette and entertaining background attractions. On the negative side, the tracks are not quite as consistent when it comes to layout. Ultimately, if there is any aspect in which Nitro-Fueled shows its age, it's in some of its course layouts, that range from excellent speedways featuring exciting slaloms, chasm leaps, and rubber-burning straights to the downright clunky featuring poorly placed curves, jumps, an??d choke points??.

In terms of content, Nitro-Fueled has a full tank of modes, including arena battles, time trials, relic hunts, grand prix, and more. The meat of the single-player content lies in the returning Adventure Mode, that now allows players to take on 16 courses dotted around a large hub world, changing their racer at will. Completing these races will unlock a selection of new kart bodies, wheels, and even characters, while allowing players the chance to get used to Nitro-Fueled's tracks, weapons, roster, and road-h?andling mechanics.

The Adventure Mode does, however, typify one of the remake's most notable issues: an oddly tight difficulty curve that finds Easy too simple for most, while Normal might find you bringing up the rear for committing the smallest slip-up. Of course, practice makes perfect with games of this genre power-sliding is the be all and end all in CTR but some players might be surprised to find just how quickly Nitro-Fueled becomes ruthlessly tough, where a? few hiccups in a ro??w could leave you hopelessly tailing.

The new Customisation mode features an array of interchangeable karts, colours, and wheels, while the characters themselves have access to some very stylish skins via the in-game store. Gold in Nitro-Fueled is earned with relative ease, particularly in online races, which usually dole out thre??e figures for a race, even if you don't end up on the podium. It's still odd to me that the store rotates its items on a timed basis, ala mobile games, but it's not particularly egregious (provided Activision doesn't decide to pull the big ol' "real money" lever.)

Speaking of online, I personally haven't had much issue with connection, save for a couple of races at best. In fact, I've really enjoyed the online portion of Nitro-Fueled, which feels like the "endgame" of the release, once Adventure Mode is mopped up and you have ?some of those tricky turns muscle-memoried. There have been many reports over the past week of lag and dropped connections, so although I haven't experienced this myself, it's clear that many others have. (Activision has stated the developers are working on an update.)

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled review

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is hardly the deepest of titles, but as a remake, it goes beyond updating the original aesthetics into redesigning a classic release as a product worthy of your money in the modern era. For the most part, everything is a success. Nitro-Fueled looks and sounds fantastic, handles very well, and features plenty of fun multiplayer modes for both local and online play. Is it a Mario Kart 8, or even a Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed beater? No, probably not. But it's more than entertaining enough to?? warrant a purchase, particularly if you do??n't have access to those gold standards of the genre.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled not only succeeds as a loving and faithful adaptation of the classic PS1 release, but it has been turbo-boosted by a glut of welcome new content including characters, tracks, and modes. Though it occasionally shows its age in course design, and erratically pumps the brakes with a surprising difficulty spike, Nitro-Fueled remains a fast and fun kart racer, s?ure to please old fans an??d worthy of a test drive from new ones.

We can climb so high, I never wanna die

Kart racers are pretty much the only type of racer you'll catch me playing. I can't spin that wheel for nothin'. Put me in front of Forza, Gran Turismo, perhaps even Need for Speed and I'm lost, pally. Hold down the accelerator and take every corner at top speed, that's me, hitting the wall more often than De Niro in Raging Bull. Ultimately, I'm a fighter, not a driver.

Still, I do love a great kart racer. From Super Mario Kart to... Mario Kart 8 (although to be fair I've never played Garfield Kart). For me personally, the king of the road is Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing Transformed. I put endless hours into that release. I loved it then and it's still great today. I've been looking for something that gets my motor runnin' even half as much for quite some time. And hopefully, with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, I might have found it.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled (PS4 [reviewed], Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)
Developer: Beenox
Publisher: Activision
Released: June 21, 2019
MSRP: $39.99

I've spent some time recently ripping up roads in Beenox' remake of the classic PS1 release Crash Team Racing. Nitro-Fueled is published by Activision, who gave us the incredibly successful Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and - just like that release - it appears they have another winner on their hands. Nitro-Fueled is looking to be a faithful tribute to the original CTR, given a fresh coat of paint and a few?? tweaks under the hood for a new generation, while retaining the addictive gameplay that made the 1?999 hit such a best-seller.

Upon starting the game, I was instantly delighted by the visual upgrade, which sees Crash, Coco, Cortex and umm... the rest... all spruced up with wonderful new character models, cute, colourful, and full o??f life. The same goes for the raceways themselves, and although I haven't had opportunity to try them all out yet, Beenox have done a fine job taking the faithful old tracks and polishing them up for a new gen?eration of players.

Nitro-Fueled handles very well, and fans of the original release will feel right at home with the remake's control system, pace and overall in-game physics. I feel it could maybe be a little faster, but that's because I live on the edge, brother. As with many kart racers, boosting out of power-slides is a key requirement to staying ahead of the game and - like our own Darren Nakamura - I'm currently having trouble breaking my muscle-memory from previous racing titles. This has left me at the back of the pack on more than one occasion. Still, with a little practice, you and I will be gunning past slo-mo suckers in no time, leaving skidmarks in our wake. Oh, grow up.

CTR's Adventure Mode returns, now allowing players to change drivers at whim as they cruise around a colourful hub world, engaging in races and boss battles, while collecting trophies, relics and keys to open up further areas. It's fun to see this open-world approach again, which recalls the excellent Wacky Races on the Dreamcast. When not gu??nning for the finish line in standard races, players can enjoy other modes including arena battles, time tria??ls, and unique events that involve collecting relics, capture the flag, finding hidden items, even the battle royale-style Last Kart Driving.

Finally, it's important to quickly surmise the game's currency and customisation modes. Winning races rewards the player with in-game currency, which can then be spent at an in-game store on new characters, skins, vehicle parts, stickers and other gubbins. The store, however, does not contain all available items at once, and works on a time rotational basis, similar to scuzzy mobile games or Mortal Kombat 11.

This feels an odd choice when real money isn't at stake, I'll have to see how it plays out. But for what it's worth, the character skins, paint jobs and vehicle parts on o??ffer are legitimately cool, attractive and relatively cheap. Also, a large selection of skins and roster additions can be gathered simply through winning races, defeating bosses, and progressing through Adventure Mode. There is a lot of cool stuff to unlock via light grinding, while the store offers up some "special" items. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the mystery characters show up.

I'm excited to spend more time with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled this weekend, which will give me ample opportunity to test out the all-important online mode with a full server of players. As a first impression, however, things are looking smart. While I still need to get to grips with some of the mechanics, explore more of the roster and tracks, and see how the shop plays out, Nitro-Fueled is already looki??ng like another confident and faithful remake of a beloved classic.

In fact, the only real negative so far is it appears Ripper Roo might suck. A shame, I love that little dude.

2 Crash 2 Fuelrious

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is a substantial remake. Not only did the team at Beenox update all of the tracks from 1999's Crash Team Racing, it also added in the tracks from 2003's Crash Nitro Kart. It took those tracks, spiffed up the visuals - in some cases resizing and reshaping them to work well in the same engine - and threw in some Easter eggs for fans to find. Nitro-Fueled?? i?s going to launch later this month with 31 racing tracks and 12 battle arenas.

But it's 2019, and you can't just release a game and stop there. After all, what's cooler than 31 tracks? 32 tracks. What's cooler than 32 tracks? We can go on like this indefinitely. Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled intends to do that, at least for a little while, and the good news is that ??each new addition to the game will be available free.

After Crash Team Racing releases on June 21, the first "Grand Prix" will begin on July 3. Players will gain free access to the all-new track Twilight Tour, and they will be able to complete races during this limited-time event to earn progress toward customization options: new characters, skins, karts, and stickers. Basically, it's a take on a battle pass, but it doesn't cost a??nything.

There are currently three Grand Prix events planned, each coming with its own new track and racer. The length of time each event will run is still under wraps. Depending on how well t?he game performs and how the community responds to the release scheme, there could be additional events beyond the initial three.

It also looks like Spyro the Dragon is headed to Crash Team Racing, but it'll be through the third of these events. He'll be added to? a roster which i?ncludes other fan favorites like Penta Penguin and Tawna.

As far as what's in the game at launch, it's a lot. There are a half-dozen or s?o racing modes that can be played on each track and another half-dozen or so battle modes that can be played on each arena. There's also an adventure mode that puts players through a series of unique challenges and progresses the story. Through all of it, there is a lot of kart racing.

As a Mario Kart veteran, that muscle memory sabotaged me a bit in Crash Team Racing, since its power sliding works just a bit differently. Jumps are higher, so it takes a split-second longer to start the slide. Then the speed boosts ar??en't tied to the fine tuning of the slide, but instead a timing mechanism using th??e other jump button. It's complicated at first, but I think I started to get the hang of it after a while. I could definitely see it being a racer with a high skill ceiling.

Difficulty is one aspect the old games were notorious for. Nitro-Fueled is keeping the option for its cla?ssic difficulty, but it's also adding a more forgiving and fairer difficulty setting as well.

So far, this title looks like it's set to be a fan-pleaser. As far as remakes go, there's not much more that could have gone into Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. Beenox could have updated the visuals, added in online multiplayer and lead??erboards and called it a day, but it looks like it went the extra mile to make it feel like a wo?rthy return to an old friend.

Some of the details on the Grand Prix system remain to be seen, so hopeful??ly those pan out well too. Even if they don't, what comes on the disc should satisfy kart racing enthusiasts.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled launches June 21 on PS4, Xbox One and?? Nintendo Switch.

Green flag drops a little early

The release of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled may still be a c?ouple of weeks away, but that hasn't stopped p??ublisher Activision from putting the pedal to the metal and releasing a "launch" trailer for the updated PS1 classic.

The new video whizzes through a selection of tracks, hazards, vehicles and characters, also giving us a glimpse at some of the fun and daft customisation options available in the full game. We see Crash, Coco and Dr. Cortex, with even a cameo from the wild-eyed Ripper Roo. The trailer also shows off Nitro-Fueled's split-screen multiplayer, and reminds us of it?s online and adventure modes

Whether you're an OG CTR fan from 1999, or you're coming to the franchise for the first time, Nitro-Fueled is shaping up to be a great-looking kart racer. Given the amazing performance of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, as well as the heavy '90s nostalgia factor, Nitro-Fueled seems almost g??uaranteed to finish in the winner's ci??rcle on release.

Through the Dragon Mines

PlayStation Underground has released a new video, featuring a full 15 minutes of action from Activision's upcoming kart racer Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled which, as of this writing, is ??just a few weeks away from release.

The video lets us whiz around two exciting tracks. The first is the fully remade Dragon Mines, which now includes an array of dynamic features, such as a mining community, and the big green beastie himself, chilling on his riches while Coco and Co. zoom by. The second track featured in the video is the Retro Stadium. This PS4-exclusive raceway is a callback to the original CTR's hidden Tu??rbo Track, and is recreated in all its sparse, low-poly glory. How the times have chang?ed.

Given the incredible success of Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, as well as the welcome response to the recent Team Sonic Racing, I'm convinced th??at Activision are onto a winner here, with a title that will sell to new and old fans alike, and will see not only a succe??ssful launch, but will also fare well when the holidays come around. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled launch?es June 2?1 on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Will Crash live up to his namesake?

PlayStation has released a whopping 20-minute gameplay video for the upcoming kart racer Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled - essentially a remake of the popular 1999 PS1 title Crash Team Racing - which ??will be leaving the starting gr??id in about a month's time.

The video showcases Nitro-Fueled's Adventure Mode, which will allow players to run a gauntlet of characters such as the titular bandicoot and his buddy Coco in a series of races, getting to grips wit??h the mechanics of the game whilst unlocking new tracks, characters and even kart customisation items along the way.

Speaking on PlayStation Blog, developer Thomas Wilson talked about how the original CTR's Adventure Mode was a unique a?nd popular feature, which the team were eager to bring back, while also tweaking it to provide more variety and reward for the?? new release. There will also be a "Classic" option for those who wish to experience the story just as they remember it.

Alongside this mode, players can expect a variety of other options including Time Attack, Boss Races, Gem Cups, Trophy Races and more, all presented with slick new visuals and online multiplayer. Nitro-Fueled will pair classic kart racing gameplay with awesom??e modern-day tech and is shaping up to be a pretty nifty looking release.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled launches on PS4, PC and Xbox One June 21.

Better start saving those Wumpa Coins

It's not enough to just win a race in Crash Team Racing you also have to look sharp when you're showboating. Make your opponents curse your name. Get them to log off and have a restless night spent tossing and turning. Next month's Nitro-Fueled remake is here to lend a helping hand with a range of customization options from skins and stickers to wheel and chassis types and even paint jobs.

I've been partial to the PS4's polygonal retro skins for Crash, Coco, and Cortex ever since they made the rounds, but I'm sure I'll find something else to glom onto after poring over the full list of character skins. For now, here's a trailer showing some of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled's cosmetic choices.

How does the u?nlock system work? As you'd expect for a kart racer, basically.

According to Activision, customization items are "gained by progressing through the Adventure Mode a?nd by earning Wumpa Coins. Collect these coins by playing the game then visit the game's Pit Stop area and unlock a greater number of goodies. This means you can practice your racing, take on the game's challenges, and unlock customization rewards to create the kart of your dreams."

This ??might go without saying, but just in case, these sorts of items won't impact your racer's speed, acceleration?, or turns. Rather, "your stats only change based on the character you play as."

I always resented Mario Kart players who went with the big-vehicle-little-wheels combo, so if I see you out there rocking that garish look in Crash Team Racing, know that you've got a target on your back. It won't be long! Nitro-Fueled hits Nintendo Switch, PlayS??tation 4, and Xbox One on June 21.

Polar for life

For my very first day at PAX East I was able to get some hands-on time with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. As one of the few believers that CTR is a better game than Mario Kart 64, I've been insanely excited to get my hands on Nitro-Fueled since its anno??uncement, and it feels as great as I remember.

The dual trigger drifting system takes some getting used to and provides a bit more of a challenge than your typ??ical kart racer. Holding down either trigger button will start your drift, but if you want to get that satisfying boost, you'll need to time a press of the opposite trigger when your tailpipe smoke turns black. This boost can be stacked up to three times per drift.

I was able to race across four of the 31 tracks that will be included at launch from both the original CTR and Crash Nitro Kart: developer Beenox confirmed that while the CTR courses remain mostly unchanged (save for a bit more activity in the background like the newly added alligator in Sewer Speedway), the Nitro Kart courses required more fine-tuning to make them work within the CTR framework. In some cases, that even meant going as far a?s changing the width and length of certain sections of the tracks.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is due out on June 21, 2019, on PlayStation 4, X??box One, and Switch.

::Crash voice:: whoa

Tucked away in the State of Play stream late last night was an announcement for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Not to be undone by the other platforms, Sony noted that their version of the kart racing rem??aster (read: PS4) will ship with extra content. That incl??udes retro skins for Cortex, Coco, and Crash (original series cast members), retro karts, and one retro track.

It's kind of innocuous way to tip the hat to a series that once called Sony platforms home: a list that includes the original CTR. ;Yo??u can ge??t a look at the content in the video below.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is out on June 21 on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

A racing game where the star is literally called 'Crash'

Activision has dropped a hi-octane trailer for the upcoming Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, a remake of the popular PS1 kart racer Crash Team Racing. The video features a cinematic?? edit of the gameplay in ac?tion.

CTR?? is looking great. All the gang are here; Crash, Coco... Umm... Cortex I think his name is... Tiger...man. Well, anyway, the action looks fast and furious, as players gun through a variety of circuits, utilising skills and pickups to take the chequered flag.

My favourite kart race is probably Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing Transformed, but I'm really not feeling the upcoming Team Sonic Racing. Hopefully Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled will scratc??h that itch when it launches, June 23, on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
