Despite the somewhat disappointing Essential monthly games for July, the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium lineup is more than making up fo?r it this month.

PlayStation Plus Extra July 2024 lineup is impressive

PlayStation Plus Extra July 2024 fittingly heats up Sony's subscription service with new games, such as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, Remnant 2, and a PSP classic Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters.

PSVR 2 enthusiasts can also play Job Simulator through Pl?ayStation Plus Extra if they haven't already.

Starting on July 16, Square Enix fans may be delighted to play the Final Fantasy VII Remake prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. It features Zack Fair, the hero who stars alongside Cloud in Rebirth. You can find out more about his story in this triple-A remaste??r of the PSP classic.

That's not all for PSP fans, however. Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, which has a surprisingly expensive PS2 port in the second-hand market, will be playable on modern systems for the first time on July 16 alongside all the other games we'll mention in this article. Like the other classic titles, Size Matters is only available for PlayS?tation Plus Premium members. Sorry, Extra guys.??

Thankfully, Remnant 2, an entertaining co-op shooter is also going to be available for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers. We gave it a great 8.5/10 score last year. "As much as I enjoyed the cinematography and scope of the world design in Remnant: From the Ashes, the team really knocked it out of the park with Remnant 2," said our reviewer Steven Mills. "There are m??ultiple worlds you’ll find yourself progressing through, each with a unique setting and story that really immersed me."

You'll have a lot to play this month

The??re are plenty of highlights in the? PlayStation Plus Extra July 2024 lineup. They include:

  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord
  • The Jackbox Party Pack 9
  • Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
  • No More Heroes 3
  • Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Complete Edition
  • Deadcraft
  • Steep

PlayStatio??n Plus Premium members will get their hands on:

  • Job Simulator (PSVR2 version)
  • Summoner (PS2)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP)
  • Jeanne d'Arc (PSP)

Squaresoft went all out in when they decided to grow Final Fantasy VII from a humble multimillion-se?lling game to a whole?? series.

To that end, they created the "Final Fantasy VII Compilation," an ambitious collection of cross-media FFVII titles that would conquer the world. The initiative met a lukewarm response from the public, with the only very well-received title coming out of it being Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, a prequel to FFVII. However, many have forgotten that Compilation?? tried to set up a charact??er who could replace Sephiroth in future games.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiL7huRoyxM

Where is Genesis Rhapsodos, Final Fantasy VII's new Sephiroth, now?

Crisis Core rocks. It introd???uces new, more action-inspired mechanics and fleshes out Zack Fair, Cloud's pal and mentor, in his final days. It also introduces a guy called Genesis Rhapsodos as the main bad guy.

Genesis is a SOLD??IER 1st class and a book nut who thinks he's one of the main characters from his favorite book, LOVELESS. From those two pieces of intel alone, you can gather he's in the same league as Sephiroth i?n terms of combat ability and being a quirky evil guy. Much like many other members of the SOLDIER program, he'd been subjected to JENOVA's cells, which led to him to getting sick and seeking revenge against Shinra.

You can also easily tell that Square really wanted to make Genesis a big thing. He has Dante's clothes, a cool rapier that glows red, and he's modeled after? and voiced by real-life Japanese rockstar Gackt.

I probably won't be creating much of a spoiler for people who didn't play Crisis Core by telling them that he's absent in the original VII or after that because he bites it in CC but that's not really true. While Genesis is defeated at the end of Crisis Core, he shows up very much alive in a pre-MCU style post-?credits scene, setting him up as the big bad ?for whatever's next.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAaJlWzQxLU

But he's been silent for nearly twenty years now. That's enough time to make Final Fantasy VII Remake five times, so he's either planning his revenge very carefully, or something must'v??e gone very wrong for this man.

Genesis naturally showed up again in the Crisis Core Reunion remake, but that takes place before his last appearance. Even worse, things with that remake got weird because of Genesis. The Crisis Core remake took much longer to come out than many expected it would, which spawned theories claiming that the reason for the wait had something to do with Square Enix having trouble getting Gackt's image and voice rights. That was not it, as Tetsuya Nomura cleared that the only reason for the delay was the company's total focus on FFVII Remake.

The obvious reason he doesn't show up in the original VII is that the developers only came up with the idea for that character after the release of FFVII and then just put him in the prequel as if he'd always been part of the plan. Still, there are more reasons why Genesis has yet to make his return. The first possibility is that even though Crisis Core was a massive success, his last appearance was actually in Dirge of Cerberus, which failed to capture the hearts of fans.

It's not completely out of the cards to see Genesis making a return in Rebirth, but it's unlikely that such a thing will?? happen, considering how the remake trilogy seems hard-focused on working with the elements present in the original game.

You can search for a Genesis cameo on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is available now for PlayStation 5.

Why is everyone so loud?

Every December, I, like many others, take a look back at the biggest games of the year. Usually, I limit myself to the games that I actually liked, but this year, I dipped my toes into Horizon Forbidden West, a sequel that I don't care for to a game that I don't care for. I also watched a few YouTube videos of God of War Ragnarök. I was going to play it in full, but Horizon Forbidden West put me off of paying full price for sequels to games I dislike (and 2018's God of War left me pretty cold). I just wanted to get a feel for the yea?r's big trends. What I discovered was one major through-line: distressingly talkative characters.

I am not the first to make this observation. Most people, Destructoid's Chris Carter included, liked Horizon Forbidden West more than I did, but it was critiqued for protagonist Aloy's constant internal monologue. Ragnarök's cast of overly-helpful companions got a shoutout in nearly every discussion of the game. Once I was aware of th??e Year of the Loud Game, though, I started noticing it e??verywhere.

It's all around us

[caption id="attachment_356215" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Nintendo[/caption]

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 carries the Xenoblade torch by having characters constantly yell their favorite quips at you; Gotham Knights, a game about? being a quiet, brooding vigilante, brought back the Totally Natural Citizen Banter that has plagued superhero games for years. Both of these examples are games that would have been dramatically improved by just a little more peace and quiet, time to luxuriate in their evocative and interesting settings without hearing "You're on fire, Lanz!" But the trend didn't stop at new releases. No, even games that have been blessing our ears for decades saw the addition of full voice actin??g in 2022.

Both Live A Live and Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion brought great games to modern platforms in pleasant packages, but they also came with new voice acting. Both games are paced around their text-only dialogue, but neither remaster provides significant updates to their scripts to accommodate the newly talkative characters. They both feel awkward, as though voice acting was only included because the games needed more noise, and I spent much of my play time wishing the largely likable characters in both games would just shut up.

[caption id="attachment_356216" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Square Enix[/caption]

Then, I got around?? to revisiting one of my favorite games of the year. And I was very rel?ieved.

Rise, Tarnished... but keep it down

Elden Ring has a lot going for it. It's got one of the best open worlds in the history of video games, its combat is the natural culmination of the last decade of FromSoftware games, and the ghost horse is very cool. The thing I appreciated most about revisiting Elden Ring, though, was its blessedly silent protagonist. The silent hero is a dying art, and Elden Ring resuscitated it at just the right time.

[caption id="attachment_356217" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Bandai Namco[/caption]

The Tarnished in Elden Ring is not really a character. That's fine. 2022 had a lot of video game characters who were desperate to prove that they were characters, with a lot of personality and pizzazz, and a lot to say. The Tarnished doesn't need the player? to know who they are. You can project any ?story you like onto them, or you can choose not to project anything onto them at all. Crucially, you can choose to simply ignore them.

Most of the games I've talked about here have had really beautiful worlds with lovely music and sound design, all of which is totally drowned out by party members helpfully reminding you to attack the enemy. Elden Ring has no such party. There are speaking characters, but they're not too talkative, and you have to actively seek them out. Elden Ring is full of de?sign decisions that encourage the player to appreciate the artistry of the world, the mechanics, the music. The game wants you to experience everything, and its quiet star is central to that ethos.

What could I do (a thousand nights without you)

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has had a somewhat mythical status for me over the past half-decade or so. I didn’t get into the Final Fantasy VII compilation until just a few years ago when I finally played through the PlayStation original for a short-lived feature series here at Destructoid. I absolutely fell for the game and its world before I watched the credits roll on it. I wanted more, but by then, the PSP was already a dinosaur, and for whatever reason, Crisis Core never found its way onto PSN. Not wanting to drop the money on a handheld for ??just one game, I was left to admire what I perceived it to be from afar.

Last year, when Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, my first thought was how I’d finally be able to see Zack’s story for myself. Sure, a free-to-play mobile gacha game would unlikely be the best way to experience it, but I figured it would be better than watching a playthrough of it on YouTube. Turns out, Square Enix had a better option in store with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.

Crisis Core review

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (PC, PS4, PS5 [reviewed], Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S)
Developer: Tose Co.
Publisher: Square Enix
Released: December 13, 2022
MSRP: $49.99

I will say the timing of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion strikes me as a bit odd. On one hand, the original Crisis Core was a popular enough game to establish its protagonist Zack Fair as more than a raven-haired doppelgänger of Cloud. On the other hand, the only reason anyone bothered with that version of Crisis Core was because Final Fantasy VII gave players a good reason to care about his story. If your experience with the FFVII universe started with Final Fantasy VII Remake, you might not know who Zack is outside of his brief cameo at the end of it, nor why he deserves his own spin-off over Remake's more established characters.

I would say to fully appreciate what Crisis Core is delivering here, you probably should have at least a basic knowledge of Zack’s role in the greater FFVII story. But given the course of the story is now up in the air, consider Reunion an introduction to a man who’ll likely play a significant role in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

And chances are by the time you beat Reunion, you’ll like Zack a lot. He’s made to be likable, with an infectious can-do attitude and a somewhat dewy-eyed perception of the world around him. He doesn’t see the problem with the body counts he racks up on the missions he’s assigned. He just wants to be a First Class SOLDIER like his heroes Angeal and Sephiroth. I almost felt bad for him at the beginning because, having been around Midgar once or twice myself, I know that type of naiveté has no place in a world?? run by the Shinra Electric Power Company. His narrative arc is strong, and the game’s use of a pre-corrupted Sephiroth works well here. Just don’t be surprised if you roll your eyes at some of the most exhausting dialogue of the mid-2000s.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=65lCz22aopY

You’ll hear a lot of character chatter throughout the game’s 10 chapters. Not only is Reunion fully voiced, but the game is overflowing with cutscenes. It often felt like I was watching the game more than I was playing it because its actual gameplay sections are brief. Every mission Zack is dispatched on consists of a short, linear jaunt riddled with often repetitive battles that most players should blast through rather quickly before queuing up another bit of story. Occasionally, the game will introduce a quick change-up in gameplay that's meant to liven things up, but these one-and-done moments don't really land as well as they should. The standard combat itself has been refined from the PSP original, giving players a one-button melee combo in addition to several pieces of instantly accessible Materia. It's clearly taking some cues from Remake, as does the UI, but Reunion forges its own identity with Digital Min?d Wave (DMW) system.

The DMW is basically a multi-faceted slot machine that’s always spinning in the upper lefthand corner of the screen. If you manage to land a combination of character portraits, numbers, or both, it'll grant you buffs, Limit Breaks, or summons during battle. The system is completely random, meaning you could get an extremely powerful Limit ?Break against some basic grunts you’d have no problem disposing of otherwise or struggle to get anything helpful while fighting some of the game’s more po?werful bosses.

I like the chaos of it all, but tying Zack’s level upgrades to landing a 7-7-7 spin isn’t exactly fair to the player putting their time into completing his journey. I think more people would be amicable toward the DMW if Zack leveled traditionally, but as I said?, I?? like the chaos of it all.

Reunion Aerith

What I don’t like is the structure of Crisis Core. While there’s nothing too objectionable about its main narrative missions–though the Aerith chapter is a bit of a momentum-ki??ller–the hundreds of side-missions you are encouraged to complete don’t do the game any favors. These missions are a relic of the PSP era of gaming, consisting of short combat scenarios that'll likely take you less than a minute to complete. Most of these missions take place in a small number of locations, and there are just so many times I can bother to trudge down the same chrome hallway, fighting the same four monsters, before I stop caring and move on.

Also, it's 2022. Please don't make me read emails in a game to unlock missions or other content. I barely read my emai??ls at my real?? job.

The upside to completing these missions, beyond the requisite reward you earn, is some of them contribute to Reunion's narrative depth and world-building. The downside is there are 300 of them with little variety, and only a handful should be consi??dered essential to unlocking Zack's full potential. I don't know exactly how many of these side missions I actually bothered to complete, but if I had forced myself to spend more time on them, I would probably be giving this game a lower score.

Reunion Gameplay

It’s a shame these missions are so dull because they can often be lovely to look at. Outside of those dull, barren chrome hallways, most of Reunion is quite beautiful. It may not measure up to other recent Final Fantasy games, but Tose Co. did an unquestionably fine job of remastering it in Unreal Engine 4. Though, it can also be weird to look? at times with current-gen character models rigged to 15-year-old animations that are somehow more cartoonish now th??at everyone looks like a real person.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a beautiful remake of a good-but-not-great game. Its structure is more well-suited for the platform it originated on, and several of the one-shot gameplay concepts it introduces don’t really land as well as they probably did in 2007. Still, it’s got charm, and I love the unpredictable nature of the DMW and how it impacts the solid combat mechanics. I don’t think Zack’s adventure will resonate with me for as long as Cloud’s did, but I am happy to have been given a chance to get to know him better before he pops up in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

See how it compares to the original

Thanks to a new video straight from Famitsu, we have an unfettered look at 13 minutes of Crisis Core Reunion PS5 footage. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is set to?? debut on December 13 on b??asically every major platform, and after a long windup, we finally have insight as to how it will play.

Although much of the text and voiceover is in Japanese, it's very easy to suss out what's going on, as it focuses on the combat system first and foremost. We also get a look at the materia customization system, which can be used to change up your tactics and ability access. Beyond some standard enemy battles, there's also a look at a boss battle with Vajradhara Wu and Vajradhara Tai, followed by a confrontation with Ifrit. The latter takes several minutes to complete, as the game shows off its limit break system and Final Fantasy VII reminiscent soundtrack.

I should point out: the video deals with a chunk of the f??irst chapter of the game, and the story beats seem to line up similarly, thus far. So you're not getting a whol??e lot spoiled, comparatively!

Zack Fair returns to close out the year

The year in games is closing out with a reunion. Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion, a remaster of the original PSP game, arrives for PC and consoles on Decemb??er 13, 2022.

Previously set for sometime in the winter season, Square Enix revealed the remaster will arrive just ahead of the new year. Shown off during today's Nintendo Direct, Crisis Core looks like it's bringing all the action and antics of the original game to bear once ?more.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiL7huRoyxM

The new trailer spotlights not just the combat, though. Many of the characters who show up in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion are also crucial to the overall FFVII plot. Sephiroth, Clou??d, and ??Aerith are all here, as well as a host of Shinra employees. Heck, even that gnarly Hojo dude is here and up to no good.

Plus, we got a look at some of the combat. It's a nice refresher, or briefing if you've never played the original Crisis Core. Check out the details in Square's blog here.

A core crisis

Originally released for the PlayStation Portable in 2008, Crisis Core acts as a prequel of sorts. It follows Zack Fair, a character who barely appears in the original Final Fantasy VII despite being a pretty big player.

That's all due to story reasons, and ones that the Final Fantasy VII remake project will probably start addressing as it heads towards the next entry. The ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake teased it, and now the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has essentially confirmed Zack will play a larger ro?le in the story.

Which leaves Crisis Core Reunion in a peculiar spot. On the one hand, Square has said Reunion can be considered part of the remake project. But the team has also said it isn't drastically changing the story of Crisis Core, either. It seems like even if the content's the same, retelling this story does at least give players a cha??nce to see Zack's story firsthand.

A safe bet is that we're at least getting the content of the original Crisis Core, so it will be a good refresher for folks as we move into uncharted waters with the remakes. And really, it's hard to say no to more Zack. Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion arriv??es on December 13 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo ?Switch, and PC via Steam.

There it is again, that funny feeling

The upcoming Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion remaster has some big implications for the series. Aside from bringing Zack's story forward to new platforms, it also seems to be playing a role in the general Remake project.

This post contains spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

In an interview with Yoshinori Kitase, transcribed and translated by fan translator @aitaikimochi on Twitter, the producer discusses the upcoming Crisis Core remaster. The decision to make Reunion was apparently made in the middle of Final Fantasy VII Remake's development. Since Crisis Core was only on PSP, the team wanted more people to play? Zack's story.

The question is whether there coul?d be potential changes in the mix, too.

"The story of Crisis Core FF7 Reunion will basically not change from the original game," Kitase says. "However, even if we say that, there might be some who played Remake or watched the Rebirth trailer and felt that something was... off. As such, you can consider Crisis Core FF7 Reunion as a part of the FF7R Project. With that in mind, we hope you can enjoy Zack's story along with the strange feeling that was brought forth from FF7R."

//twitter.com/aitaikimochi/status/15486502?5?3477617666

And if you were curious, Dirge of Cerberus doesn't seem to be in the works, since it happens after the original Final Fantasy VII.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRBiRFM2k0I

What's Fair play?

With the reveal that Zack Fair seems to play a much, much larger role in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, remastering Crisis Core makes total sense. It is all about Z??ack Fair, after all.

But the big question was whether Crisis Core would be a literal remaster or whether it would stray to address what's changing in the Remake Project. After all, the Final Fantasy VII remakes are now charting their own course. The confirmed trilogy is breaking from the path set by its source material, and could be headed into uncharted waters.

This quote does make it seem like Crisis Core is being made with some cognizance of this. I'm wondering if we might get a slight tease of what's to come in Rebirth from it. Square Enix does enjoy teasers; just look at Kingdom Hearts for plenty of examples.

We'll see the return of Zack's side of the story this winter when Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion arrives for PC and consoles.

I'm sure people will hold them to it!

With the Final Fantasy VII Remake changes out in the universe, the Crisis Core remaster story was potentially in danger, as it were but according to a new IGN interview with S??quare Enix leadership, that seemingly will not be a concern.

Producer Mariko Sato confirms that the Crisis Core re-release wasn't a direct answer to the Remake storyline, and that it's more of an unrelated meta effort to bring back the Final Fantasy VII universe as a whole. Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase elaborates: "I do recall that it was towards the end of the Final Fantasy VII Remake development that we realized that with the quality we were able to bring to Final Fantasy VII Remake, we might be able to create something for the stories that are actually surrounding Final Fantasy VII. And it is an actual possibility that we can develop Crisis Core. So that's the ti?ming at which we decided that yes, this remake can actually happen."

Kitase reiterates that unlike the Remake proper, they aren't changing anything big in Crisis Core: "It is a remaster and it's still positioned as a story that expands on the original Final Fantasy VII story. And so we didn't want to stray too far from that." Major story changes are seemingly off the table according to this context, though IGN hints ominously that a post-credits sequence linking this game and the Final Fantasy VII Remake-verse is still possible.

Square Enix also confirms that the roulette system will be intact, but you'll be able to directly link combos and limit breaks with more player control. The P??C port is also confirmed for 120 FPS, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X editions are 60 FPS (the Switch version stats were left out of the statem??ent outside of saying there would be "differences" between the versions).

I mean, I'd be fine if they changed the story, as long as it was quality! A re-rel?ease is a much more malleable work of art after all. But this is probably for the best.

Still due "this winter"

Square Enix has showcased some extra Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core quality of life changes via a new tweet, and most of them look great. Let's take a look at what Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion has in store for us event??ually (the publisher is still sticking to a release window of "this winter" as of this week).

Here are the main Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core quality of life upgrades:

  • Improved camera
  • Optimized UI
  • New menu-based battle system
  • New background music (by Takeharu Ishimoto, who worked on Legend of Mana, Kingdom Hearts, and several modern Final Fantasy games)
  • Full voiceover for text-based scenes in the original

I bolded the "new battle system," as that's easily going to be one of the most i?nteresting elements of the remaster, depending on how Square Enix handles it. While I lived through it on PSP (and came out fine), searching for discussions on the original "roulette" style battle system will garner results from "who the hel?l thought the roulette thing was a good idea?" to "it was one of my favorite parts of the game."

It remains to be seen how much has changed in the re-release, as the roulette mechanic seems to still exist, based on the inaugural trailer. My guess is a???? lot of folks will see any change as an upgrade!

It's a full remaster of the PSP exclusive

Square Enix is remastering Crisis Core, and it's arriving pretty soon. Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a remaster of the 2007 prequel to Final Fantasy VII, and it's coming to PC and consoles this winter.

The news was announced during today's Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration showcase. The original Crisis Core is a prequel story to Final Fantasy VII proper, following Zack Fair's mission to find missing SOLDIER Genesis Rhapsodos. This new version looks to follow the same story, but with an ?updated look and feel.

Square Enix is calling it a full remaster. Reunion will have HD graphics and all 3D models refreshed. Dialogue will be fully vo??ice-acted, and t??here's a new soundtrack arrangement as well.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is planned to launch on both PC and modern consoles. That means PS4, PS??5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. No news on a firm date just yet.

All's Fair in love and remasters

According to Square Enix, you won't need to have played Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy VII Remake in order to play Crisis Core Reunion. It also works as a s??tandalone story, with its own adve??nture that unfolds.

That said, the expanded universe stuff is really all about seeing it all come together. And considering how Zack seems to be playing a big part in the also-announced Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, this m??ight be a good bit of homework to do ??before next winter.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion

The big question is, obviously, will any of the story content change? Zack Fair's status in the Remake continuum is clearly quite different from the original. Remake also seems to be linked to the original series, in a very Rebuild of Evangelion manner. Things are about to get wacky and wild with the timeline and deeper lore questions. Hopefully we get some answers ?this winter.
