Even if you haven't played Star Citizen, you're likely aware of its legacy. It's been in development for well over a decade with an early access version of the game available to play and has become one of the most highly-funded crowdfunding campaigns of all t??ime. But now, the journey to a full release seems within grasp. Sort of.

According to a recent letter from the chairman and founder of Cloud Imperium Games, Chris Roberts, Star Citizen is on the path to 1.0, whic??h the team considers "the features and content set to represent 'commercial' release." The letter says this means "the game is welcoming to new players, stable, and polished with enough gameplay and content to engage playe?rs continuously."

//twitter.com/RobertsSpaceInd/status/1768342984565625316

In other words, "it is no longer Alpha or Early Access," as the developer continues on a roadmap that will see the fruition of multiple milestones for the Persistent Universe ??(the main module of the game).

Still a long journey ahead

To coincide with these plans to bring Star Citizen 1.0 to the fore, Cloud Imperium has initiated a re-organization, which includes having developers relo?cate to be "closer in time zone to our main develop?ment operations in Manchester, Frankfurt, and Montreal."

There are also some words from Rich Tyrer, who recently became Senior Game Director. Tyrer has said his new role involves him "coming on board to help push Star Citizen to the next stage of its development, ultimately culminating in l??eaving early access and releasing the 1.0 version of the game." However, there's no release date for the long-awaited commercial rele?ase.

As of right now, Star Citizen has amassed a total of $672,037,749 in donated funds. Given this staggering figure, you'd be forgi??ven for understanding why a lot of fans have grown impatient waiting well over ten years for the game proper to laun??ch.

'80s titles planned for rerelease on Switch and PC

Old-school cool developer Sunsoft has announced that it is planning a crowdfunding campaign in hopes to bring three of its Japan-only Famicom releases to modern platforms. The campaign will officially launch on the Japanese crowdfunding site Campfire between July 14 - August 31.

The three titles up for rerelease are Edo-set platformer Kanshaku Tamanage Kantarou no Toukaidou Gojuusan-tsugi (1986), side-scrolling fantasy adventure The Wing of Madoola (1986), and finally the casually-paced text adventure Ripple Island (1988). None of the t??itles ventured outside of Japan and thus have since faded into obscurity, a status that Sunsoft is hoping to revitalize.

[caption id="attachment_388355" align="alignnone" width="640"]sunsoft famicom games Image from Shmuplations[/caption]

Should the Campfire campaign prove successful, the three titles will be ported to PC and Nintendo Switch. In addition, the publisher is hoping to release physical gold cartridges of the games for the ??Famicom platform. Way back when, Sunsoft was one of the few companies allowed to release its titles on specially branded cartridges, (see image above), and while many of the studio's games were awarded this prestige, gold-tinted cartridges were a goal never achieved by the studio. Hopefully, Sunsoft will be able to realize its glittery dream, if 40 years after the fact.

??Localizatio??ns for the titles were not confirmed, and seem unlikely, but we will let you know should this change.

Die. Mutate. Repeat.

Acclaimed roguelite Dead Cells is getting set to bring its compelling and amorphous adventure to your local ?coffee table, courtesy of a brand new board game currently in production at L??e Scorpion Masque.

The Montreal-based studio, which has previously produced board games such as Decrypto, Zombie Kidz, and Stay Cool, launched a Kickstarter for Dead Cells, which will be the company's first licensed title. While the crowdfunding kicked off with a modest target of around $30,000 USD, the campaign has, at the writing of writing, surpassed a staggering $250,000, with 15 days still to go. As such, the game will now go into p??roduction. A release wi??ndow is yet to be announced.

//youtu.be/rfl-gb3M520

The Dead Cells board game will look to retain both the visual aesthetic, immersive atmosphere, and general gameplay of Motion Twin's 2018 release, as 1-4 players pick their ?way through ever-shifting dungeons in co-operative action, as they battle through High Peak Castle en route to a confrontation with the nefarious Hand of The King. One of four uniquely skilled Beheaded can be chosen, and the board will retain th?e Die/Repeat nature of its roguelike origins.

You can check out a breakdown of a pre-production copy in the video below, courtesy of the board game fans at Good Time Society.

Explore biomes, level up your character, defeat enemies, conquer challenges, and lose it all on the turn of a card. Level up your Beheaded, earn permanent upgrades, and work with your fellow team members to defeat what seems, at first glance, a near-insurmountable ch??allenge. But strategy, synergy, and ??persistence can pay off in the end, or you'll simply die, and die, and die, and die trying.

You can check out a full breakdown of Dead Cells on the official Kickstarter.

Dead Cells is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch,? and iOS/Android platforms.

The rabbit hole is no more

In glum news for Gothic gaming fans everywhere, producer and screenwriter American McGee has seemingly confirmed that EA has rejected his pitch for a third title in the cult platform adventure series American McGee's Alice. The second sequel, tentatively title Alice: Asylum, will no longer move forward? as planned, wi??th the series creator currently convinced that the series has come to an end.

Having built up a following via crowdfunding website Patreon, McGee took various materials to the publisher, including concept art, design documents, a narrative outline, and a development "bible", but it seems that EA simply didn't have the same interest or passion for the project as McGee and his backers. Speaking on Twitter, McGee suggests that this motion not only represents an "endpoint" for the Alice universe, b?ut also for his own interest in t?he game development industry.

//ww?w.youtube.com/watch?v=roV8oWmL9q4&ab_channel=AmericanMcGee

The original American McGee's Alice launched on PC in 2000 and told a particularly grim tell of Lewis Carrol's troubled young hero as she returns to a darkened take on Wonderland. This extremely cult release would be followed up in 2011 with action-heavy sequel Alice: Madness Returns. It should be noted that both titles are merely "fine" at best, but still garnered loyal, dedicated fanbases due to their curiously dark tastes, strange weapon designs, and intriguing takes on the Alice in Wonderland mythos.

McGee has attempted to get Alice: Asylum off of the drawing desk for many, many years, and it seems that this fight has taken its toll on the will and patience of the creator. McGee notes that he has no interest in developing further video games, and, should any company ever pick up the Alice license, then they will likely be making further ??titles without his input.

Would you tell me, ??please, which way I ought to go from here?

Indeed.

And I could not be more excited

Slay the Spire is one of my most-played games of all time, so it's always a pleasant surprise to see the little indie game that could from 2017 in the headlines. This time, there's a Slay the Spire board game in the works, and in al??l honesty, I'm not much of a board game person, but I am willing to be if it means I get to play ?a physical version of my favorite deckbuilding roguelike.

Apparently I somehow missed the announcement that Slay the Spire was getting a board game adaptation two years ago, but the Kickstarter page for the ?project is officially launched. So far they've raised ov?er $1.5 million, and I don't really have any clue how much money it takes to make a board game, but that seems like a pretty substantial chunk of change in my book.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGfSp3Kz7rk

There are four pledge tiers ranging from $1 to $210 -- the lowest tier gets you access to updates and the Pledge Manager at the end of the campaign, the $100 tier gives you the base game, the $145 version gets you th?e base game plus some extras like character play mats and metal coins, and that fancy $210 version gets you the game and a whole bunch of extras, like the aforementioned mats, coins, and some beta art, among other things.

There are already some reviews of the board game up online, and wit?h all the little bits and baubles (that I am bound to lose) it seems that the mechanics are a very faithful adaptation of what we're used to seeing in the video game. It looks to me like a pretty luxe purchase for collectors and fans of the game, so I'd probably suggest giving the original a few runs before playing if you haven't already.

Star Citizen passes yet another impressive milestone

It's a known fact that it takes a long, long time to make games, but Cloud Imperium Games is testing gamers' patience with their in-development title Star Citizen, which began pre-production all the way back in 2010. The?? game was officially announced in 2012 with the launch of a ??Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for development, and while it was anticipated to release in 2014, the game was delayed multiple times... and still is yet to receive any sort of official release window.

Ten years after the launch of the Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign, the game has reached an incredible milestone by raising over $500 million the official count as of today is $500,075,150 from 4,096,384 backers. (Thanks, Eurogamer.) I??'m not sure if I'm more impressed by the numbers, or whether fans are still holding out hope a decade later.

I get that huge MMOs like that are insanely difficult to develop, but at this point, I'm amazed things haven't shut down yet. I guess they have the?? funds to keep going for a while. The project is known for being the highest-funded video game o?f all time, and it actually won a Guinness World Record back in 2014 for being the highest crowdfunded project when it had raised $39,680,576.

Cloud Imperium started releasing small gameplay snippets called "modules" so that players could get a sense of the game (and probably to slow the com?plaints for a while). The last module was released in 2015, but it still receives regular updates.

A side project called Squadron 42 was also announced with the initial Star Citizen crowdfunding project and was intended to be the story mode. Now it's supposed to be a standalone project, and Cloud Imperium is already discussing plans for multiple sequels before the game is even finished.

It's nice that fans are still excited for Star Citizen after all these years, but man, knowing what I know about game development, I'd be shocked if players get a fraction of wh??at they ?were promised all those years ago.

Western localization in development

Edia, the developer/publisher behind Valis: The Fantasm Collection, has announced a Japanese release date for its next collection of obscurities: Cosmic Fantasy Collection Th?e double-header of PC Engine dungeon crawlers will launch on Nintendo Switch December 15. A localization is currently in the works.

As previously reported, the Cosmic Fantasy Collection will consist of two titles: 1990's Cosmic Fantasy: Adventure Boy Yuu, and 1991's TurboGrafx CD sequel Cosmic Fantasy 2: Adventure Boy Van. The latter title was the only game in t??he series to find its way to western shores, and remains some??thing of an obscurity regardless, so retro gaming fans will definitely want to consider giving this new remaster a space on the radar.

The Cosmic Fantasy franchise would see relative success upon its debut in Japan, thanks to its quirky comedic style and obligatory love of naughty cheesecake fanservice. The series would spin off into several other adventures, and would also receive manga and anime adaptations, as well as a range of toys and merchandise. An intriguing little lost oddity in the annals of '90s gaming. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, these forgotten titles will soon be experienced by?? a whole new generation of anim??e and RPG fans.

The Pull-Out-Dining-Room-Tables Between

Bandai Namco is teaming with Steamforged Games to produce a board game variant of its stellar RPG release, Elden Ring. As reported by Eurogamer, the tabletop edition of the mega-selling 2022 release will launch a preliminary crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter "soon."

While there are very little in the way of images or details pertaining to the adaptation, Steamforged Games has revealed that Elden Ring will see one to four Tarnished players emb??ark on a whole new adventure in The Lands Between, visiting familiar locations and locking steel with a rogues' gallery of recognizable and formidable opponents. The board game will feature "characteristically challenging" dice-free combat, relying on strategy and?? adaptation in order to survive the encounter.

"Elden Ring is a stunning, genre-defining video game, and we are humbled and privileged to be bringing it to your tabletops. To say our team is passionate about the game would be an understatement," says Steamforged CCO Mat Hart in a press release. "Our mission is always to deliver authen??tic tabletop adaptations that capture the essence of what fans know and love about the IP. Fans should expect a dark, richly-realised tabletop world of mystery and peril, with satisfying combat and rewarding exploration. Prepare to lose hours to this game, and to be glad about it."

This is not, obviously, Steamforged's first rodeo in the world of tabletop video game adaptations. Previously, the company has developed board and card games based on popular franchises such as Dark Souls, Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Pac-Man, and Devil May Cry. We will be sure to give you a heads-up right here on Destructoid when the Elden Ring campaign goes live.

Two more retro-inspired RPGs are locked in

The double Kickstarter for spiritual successors to the Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts series has hit its minimum. Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood have cleared their initial goal on Kickstarter and are ?now climbing for stretch goals.

Creators behind the Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts series revealed their crowdfunding plan last week, with an interesting twist. Rather than individual campaigns, the two projects would share a pool as a d?ouble Kickstarter. Contributions towards one spiritual successor would help the other.

The two games are Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood. The former takes after the Westernpunk concept of Wild Arms, with a distinctly animated style. Penny Blood, meanwhile, picks up the dark and moody side of Shadow Hearts, using alt-history as its backdrop.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=qflxCRQ-E0E

With the goal of ¥100,000,000 met, both projects are now considered funded. As per release, the Kickstarter site estimates delivery of a digital version of Armed Fantasia or Penny Blood as March 2025.

As the developers remind in their "R?isks" section though, things can change. But while delays are one thing, the creators assure that both games are being developed by professional teams, and you "don't need to worry about them not being released" when they get funded.

Reach for the sky

The team posted a thank-you message for hitting its minimum goal within one day's time. They also say that, due to popular request from backers and potential backers, a new add-on for digital and? physica?l versions of the OST has been added.

The double Kickstarter crew also plans to do three updates a week, spotlighting different aspects of the two games each day. As for the stretch goals, the campaign's Combo Meter (a shared stretch goal meter) includes console versions. Everything else beyond is currently obscured, but there will likely be more goals and features to f?und.

It's neat to see this campaign hit its mark so fast. Both series have such an interesting and distinct style and approach to RPGs, and I'm keen to see what this team brings to bear further on down the road. The campaign will run through September 30 here.

Two RPG classics are back in spiritual form

The creators behind two RPG franchises are joining forces to crowdfund. Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts are teaming u?p for a "double Kickstarter" to fund spiritual successors to both series.

Shadow Hearts creator Matsuzo Machida and Wild Arms creator Akifumi Kaneko announced the news today. The double Kickstarter campaign is for two games: Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood.

The first, Armed Fantasia, is a follow-up to Wild Arms set in a similar Westernpunk world. Kaneko will handle lead game design and scenario writing, while Tomomi Sasaki is on the character design. Music for Armed Fantasia will be by Michiko Naruke, Noriyasu Uematsu, and Elements Garden. From the screenshots they release, it's definitely got some Wild Arms style, ??blending technology and the wild, wild west.

The other game is Penny Blood, a dark tale set in the 1920s. It follows an investigator who takes on dark evil during a time of international unrest. Penny Blood looks very much like its predecessor in Shadow Hearts, with character design from Miyako Kato and music by Yoshitaka?? Hirota. And bo??y, does it looks dark.

Going back to the classics

The two teams are combining forces in one concerted effort. And I mean, if you want to make a play for the hearts of old-school JRPG fans, these are two good picks. Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts are two series that certainly stand ?out thanks to their mec??hanics and settings, and both could see a big revival through these successors.

As for funding, the Double Kickstarter will support both team's projects. Backers will have the option to fund Penny Blood, Armed Fantasia, or both. T??he shared "Combo Meter" fo?r the campaign will continue to unlock new content for both games as it goes up.

The Double Kickstarter will launch on August 29 with a minimum mutual goal of $750,000 for both projects. Each pledge will contribute to whichever game is backed, while also adding to the shared Combo Meter. It's a novel idea, but I'm pretty intrigued by it. Classic games getting spiritual successors has been successful on Kickstarter, as we've seen from the rollout of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and its related content. And I could be really interested in successors to bo??th these series.

The beloved game inspires a slew of charity fundraisers

As if Stray couldn't get any better, the game that has cat-lovers and gamers alike fawning over its adorable, fuzzy protagonist is also helping out cats in real life. Streamers and Annapurna Interactive, the game's publisher, have facilitated a whole host of events and services to benefit animal shelters and other cat-related charities, as initially reported by AP.

Annapurna reached out to the Nebraska Humane Society ahead of the game's launch on July 19 to give them copies of the game to be raffled off as a fund??raiser for the shelter. Within a week, they had raised over $7,000 for the cause, including a $1,035 donation from Annap??urna themselves. A vast majority of those who donated to the shelter were also new to them, including some international fans of the game.

Annapurna also rented out a cat cafe and cat adoption agency in New York called the Meow Parlour to host an event where visitors could play the game (while being surrounded by cats, no less) and purchase exclusive Stray-themed merchandise. The publisher al??so donated $1,000 to the institution.

[caption id="attachment_338376" align="alignnone" width="1920"] [Image Source: GamesRadar][/caption]Gamers themselves have also taken up the man??tle of doing some good for the stray cats of?? the world.

A platform called Tiltify, which allows streamers to donate their earnings to nonprofits, has shared that their platform has at least nine new campaigns that mention Stray, and another charity livestream organization JustGiving has identified two more. North Shore Animal League America, a no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, said they received over $800 from a gaming campaign. A streamer named TreyDay1014 also teamed up with the Nebraska Humane Society, helping them raise over $1,500 by the end of a four-and-a-half??-hour stream.

Stray is an undeniably sweet, uplifting game, so it's not a surprise in the least tha??t the community behind it has rallied to make some awesome real-world change.

Blasts from the Past

Edia, the indie outfit behind the recent Valis: The Fantasm Collection is getting back on board the retro train this week, opening a brand new crowdfunding campaign to secure the budget for a brand new remaster/rerelease of forgotten Nippon Telenet franchise Cosmic Fantasy.

Originally released on PC Engine way back in 1990, Cosmic Fantasy: Adventure Boy Yuu is a dungeon-crawling RPG that focuses on our young protagonist who is forced from a pleasant life of farming to become the leader of an intergalactic space force. As you do. Accompanied by his feline pal Nyan and the beautiful Saya, Yuu embarked upon multiple adventures, with the franchise going on to spawn toys, manga, and anime series. It is renowned for its quirky nature, goofy comedic style, and cheesecake "sexy" ??content.

cosmic fantasy 2 edia

Cosmic Fantasy: Adventure Boy Yuu would receive a number of sequels and spin-offs, though it seems that Edia's new collection will only be focusing on the original title and its ultra-rare, 1991 TurboGrafx-CD sequel Cosmic Fantasy 2: Adventure Boy Van. The latter title was the only release in the series to see a localized launc??h outside of Japan, so fans of M.I.A. titles as well as the golden age of sci-fi anime will no doubt be hoping that this collection will find its eventual way to western shores.

Crowdfunding on Makuake, Edia is looking to raise ¥3 million (or roughly $23,000 USD) and seems relatively confident that it will do so, given that the developer has already announced a launch date and price for the finished product. We will be sure to give you a heads up when more information is forthcoming. Cosmic Fantasy Collection is tentatively scheduled to launch in Japan December 2022 on Nintendo? Switch.

A little frog on a big adventure

For years now, crowdfunding sites have been one of the best ways for indie games to secure development. Because fans get to directly support the projects they want made, we've seen some of the most creative and innovative titles of the past decade come from platforms like Kickstarter and Fig, including Outer Wilds, Undertale, and Hollow Knight, just to name a few. I'm always on the lookout to see what new games are up for funding, because you never know what hidden gems you'll find. This time, I'm trained on A Frog's Tale after spotting its Kickstarter campaign on Twitter, an?d it looks like it could be an indie darling in?? the making.

//www.kickstarter.com/projects/normanfrog/a-frogs-ta??le

A Frog's Tale is a retro RPG, with pixel art inspired by SNES and GBA classics, and gameplay inspired by titles like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Kingdom Hearts, and Tales of Symphonia. It features musical turn-based combat and set pieces that are synched with the game's sc?ore, mak?ing for a truly unique experience.

Frogs have been a recent trend in video games, and considering how adorable A Frog's Tale looks, you certainly don't see me complaining about it. The whole thing looks incredibly polished and sleek, and whi?le we only have a few short clips of gameplay so far, it's already feeling like it has what it takes to stand out from the crowd.

A Frog's Tale went up on Kickstarter last week (four days ago as of the writing of this post), and it will probably meet its $60,000 goal in the next few hours. There's still nearly a month left for the funding campaign, so the future is looking bright for this game. There are some pretty great rewards available for backing A Frog's Tale, s?o if it seems like something you'??d be into, I definitely recommend checking it out.

Scariest tabletop since Atmosfear

[Update: The Dead by Daylight board game is now officially available to pre-order from Kickstarter. Both the Standard and Collector's Editions are now live at the prices noted below. Pre-orders close April 21, with copies of the game expected to ship in time? for Halloween 2022.]

Behaviour Interactive's Dead by Daylight is surely one of the scariest multiplayer games on the market right now, but do you know what would? make it even scarier? If you added CARDS. Think of the? risk of papercuts. If you agree with me, (which you shouldn't), then you'll be happy to hear that the asymmetrical multiplayer will be headed to a tabletop near you later in 2022.

The developer has teamed with game-maker Level 99 to produce a board game based on the survival horror title. Typically titled Dead by Daylight, the new game hopes to transpose the hide 'n' hunt nature of the video game to your dining room, complete with teams of survivors, a variety of deadly killers, various missions and tasks, generators. and even a cute plastic equivalent of DbD's "hook-hanging" sequence.

dead by daylight board game kickstarter

"As fans of the original video game, we worked hard to capture the tension between the Survivors and the Killer on every turn," says Level 99 designer D. Brad Talton Jr. "The moment when you commit to your move and then have to hold your breath while the Killer makes their play to me that’s the essence of Dead by Daylight."

The new game, like so many licensed board games of the modern age, will be crowdfunded on Kickstarter, with funding opening on March 29. A Standard Edition, priced at $49.99, will include six Killers, seven Survivors, and two maps, while a prestige Collector's Edition, priced at $99.99, 16 Killers, 17 Survivors, and four maps. Level 99 promises an entire cast of characters leading up to the release of the All-Kill DLC so a lot of ??your favori??te slashers will be in the mix.

We'll be sure to give you a reminder when the Dead by Daylight Kickstarter opens, March 29.

Already surpassed the 60% mark

Independent studio Red Candle Games has launched a crowdfunding campaign for its next project em> Nine Sols is a very attra??ctive looking action-RPG that looks to blend ancient Asian culture with modern neon technology, backdropping a lone hero's efforts to re??scue their realm from its cruel oppressors.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=luKV9hpDvw8&t

Nine Sols, described by Red Candle Games as a "Taopunk" adventure, will featur?e beautiful, hand-drawn 2D visuals, bringing life to a cast of mythical creatures in a tale of bravery, honor, and salvation. Set in the realm of New Kunlun, players will take up the role of long-forgotten hero Yi, who is awoken by a child in a last-ditch effort to free the world's people from the tyranny of the land's ruler??s: The 9 Sols.

The zen-like adventure blends platforming action and deep exploration with "deflection" based combat, with FromSoftware's samurai hit Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice cited as a major influence on Nine Sols' combat. As Yi traverses New K?unlun on their quest, they will encounter a wide cast of allies and enemies, while uncovering deep lore about the realm, its denizens, and the events that led to the protagonist's rebirth.

Utilizing gathered Jade as well as a unique ore known as Jin Yi is able to improve their weapons and abilities, and example of Nine Sols core philosophy of combining traditional aesthetics with futuristic, cyber??punk-style mechanics and technology.

All of this adve?nture and intrigue will be scored with a soundtrack that will use contemporary electronic sounds with traditional Eastern instruments, once again blending the past with the future to create a disti?nct hybrid of both generations. Red Candle Games hopes that this unique and distinct score will provide a "pleasant albeit experimental" auditory experience.

From details ascertained from the in-depth write-up on the official Red Candle website, combined with the great-looking test footage above, Nine Sols is already looking like something of a real gem, and has already cemented itself a spot on my watchlist. While Red Candle Games has not offered up a release window nor platforms for its exciting project, the studio notes that it has acquired PlayStation and Nintendo Swi??tch development kits.

Confront your Destiny

Fans of the legendary cult franchise Valis would do well to shift themselves over to the Limited Run Games store right now, as the boutique retailer has opened pre-orders on its previously teased Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection for Nintendo Switch.

Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection comprises three classic adventures from the sword-and-sorcery series: Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (1986), Valis II (1989), and Valis III (1?990). This trilogy of tales tells the epic saga of young, Yuko Asou, a high school girl thrust from reality into a fantastical fantasy universe, where she must take up her role as the fabled savior of the spiritual realms. Still better than homework.

valis the fantasm collection collector's edition

The Valis series, which made its presence known on the MSX and PC-88 hardware, was heavily lauded at the time for rudimentary versions of features that we take for granted in modern gaming, such as in-game cinematics and incredible pride in its characters, lore, and storytelling elements. The Valis trilogy would be followed by Valis IV (1991) on the PC Engine, Super Valis IV (1993) on the Super Nintendo, and the "behind-closed-doors" Valis X (2006) on PC. Check over your shoulder before Googling that one. Unfortunately, these three releases are not included in the new collection.

Valis the Fantasm Soldier Collection is available from Limited Run Games in two distinct formats. The regular edition ($39.99 USD) includes all three classics on one cartridge in standard packaging, while a Collector's Edition ($89.99) includes a four-disc soundtrack set, a pin badge selection, a reversible poster, and three art cards. This edition features a reversible sleeve sporting the original western release artwork. In addition, a vinyl soundtrack ($59.99) is also available, featuring the Valis trilogy's score pressed to three LPs.

Pre-orders on all of the above items will remain open until February 6. A digit??al release is also en route.

Physical release coming from Limited Run Games

Edia has confirmed a western localization for its upcoming retro compendium Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection. While the Japanese edition of the 1980s fantasy series will launch on Nintendo Switch in December, western retro fans can look forward to a fully translated edition of the trilogy which will launch at some un??specified point in 2022.

As we have previously reported, the Valis series launched on PC-88 and MSX plat??forms in the tail-end of the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The games tell the tale of an ordinary, everyday high school girl Yuko Asou who reluctantly accepts her just-discovered destiny as the centuries-fated defender of three majestic spiritual realms, currently under invasions from an army of hellish monsters and demons. What a Wednesday that must hav?e been for her.

While the gameplay of the original Valis titles is undeniably old-school, the series was highly regarded in its day for its commitment to layered narrative, advancing its characters and lore through, at the time, groundbreaking in-game cinematics. The original Valis titles would be followed by Valis IV (1991) on the PC Engine, Super Valis IV (1993) on the Super Nintendo, and the somewhat more questionable Valis X (2006) on PC... Maybe check out that release outside of work hours. The new compendium will only contain the original trilogy Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (1986), Valis II (1989), and Valis III (1990).

Limited Run Games has announced that it will be releasing a physical edition of Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection. While the boutique retailer did not announce any details pertaining to the features of the physical release, it is expecting to open pre-orders in January 2022. We'll be sure to give you a heads-up when?? more information is forthcoming.

Promising tricky puzzles, narrative twists, vicious enemies, and a labyrinthine open-world experience, the Resident Evil tabletop hopes to capture the tense, nervous horror of? it?s notorious digital counterparts.

This endeavor is Steamforged Games' latest video game adaptation, having previously produced tabletop editions of games such as Dark Souls, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 2 & 3, and, most recently, Capcom's own Monster Hunter World. Steamforged has noted that the Kickstarter for Resident Evil: The Board Game will be a 16-day "choice-driven" campaign, reflecting the adventurous nature of the survival horror franchise itself... I don't know what to tell you about that, sounds pretty odd. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Interested parties can sign up for notifications on Kickstarter right now, ahead of the campaign's October 26 launch.

Crowdfunding site raised $13m in first half of 2021

Among the myriad half-year financial reports currently doing the rounds on the intern??et, Kickstarter has also dropped a slew of statistics pertaining to the various projects that have emerged on the crowdfunding sit??e in the first half of 2021.

As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, Kickstarter has welcomed a total of 649 video game-related projects in 2021 an increase of 61 projects on the same period in 2020, (Kickstarter notes that the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has a major effect on the amount of launched campaigns). Of these projects, 184 managed to hit their goal, raising a gra??nd total of around $13 million USD in total. 2020 saw Kickstarter raise a total of $23 million for the whole year, so it looks like the group is on track to match and possibly smash that record.

"Overall, 2??021 so far is following the same stability we have observed for video games projects on the platform," reads Kickstarter's report. "There is a steady flow of video games cre??ations that find funding on Kickstarter, and there is no sign of decline in sight."

The most successful video game Kickstarter campaign in 2021 to date is the incredibly popular video game/web show brand Friday Night Funkin', which raised $2.2 million back in April. The second highest was farming sim Coral Island, which smashed its initial target in just 36 hours back in February, ultimately raising $1.6 million. While a pretty hefty 465 projects did not hit their goal, history has taught us that sometimes these lost projects still find fruition outside of Kickstarter, having at least gotten the ball rolling and some solid publicity. In total, over six billion dollars has been rai??sed by Kickstarter acro??ss all of its projects since its initial launch in 2012.

Have you personally backed anything on Kickstarter this year? A game? A tabletop adaptation? A Star Wars remake? Let us know in the comments below! Me? No, of course not. All my mo??ney goes on coffee, tablets, and Faberge ??eggs.

Irresponsible Schoolgirl Simulator

[Update: Detained: Too Good for School is now live on Kickstarter. Stret??ch ?goals include language localization and console ports. O.T.K Games is looking for a funding goal of around $14,000 USD. Go check it out, looks rad!]

Publisher Thermite Games, alongside indie outfit O.T.K., (of The Vagrant fame), has announced plans to open a crowdfunding campaign for a new hyper-kinetic RPG/brawler. Detained: Too Good for School is currently in deve?lopment for PC, and will be looking for contributions o?n Kickstarter very soon.

Described as an "Irresponsible Schoolgirl Simulator", Detained will tell the tale of a young gal sent to juvenile hall for a crime that she did not commit. After serving hard time, our young hero returns to her place of learning, with plans to teach those who sullied her bad name a lesson they will sorely regret. Get to know your fellow pupils, make friends and allies, raise a lot of hell, bust some fuc?kin' heads, and soon you'll find out who set you up and exact delicious vengeance.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG1_L6aiJgc

While most of the title's action will be of the brawling variety, Detained will also feature a ton of side-quests and distractions. Players can take part-time jobs to earn cash, visit the gym to build up their moveset, visit the local shopping district for some retail therapy, or chill out with pals in the library. Detained will als??o feature a selection of potential romances, with your significant other also becoming a trusted ally on the battlefield. Beware who you befriend and who you ??antagonize, however, as your actions will matter in this twisted tale, which offers over 10 different endings.

While comparisons to a certain excellent brawler are inevitable, I think Detained is looking pretty rad, and right up my alley. I gotta admit I'm cringing hard at a certain element of the lead character's design it's embarrassing, frankly but with good scripting, a cool cast of characters, and deep, engaging fight mechanics, Detained: Too Good for School could prove to be a very wild ride and w?e'll be sure to give you a heads-up once the Kickstarter campaign finally goes live.

Rolling (Rainbow) Sixes

Rainbow Six Siege players who wish to take their window-smashin', flash-bangin' action out of the digital realm and into the dining room should keep one eye on Kickstarter today. Mythic Games is finally ready to launch its crowdfunding campaign for its previously announced Rainbow Six Siege board game, which looks to recreate ??the tense, strategic, and explosive action of Ubisoft's tactical shooter in tabletop form.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQyg0wY0HYg

Mythic Games' Kickstarter campaign will go live in just an hour from now and is expected to feature a ton of new information regarding 6: Siege The Board Game and its release, along with numerous backer goals/rewards pertaining to exclusive operator miniatures and expansion sets. Various tabletop gaming websites have already managed to get their paws on an early edition of 6: Siege,?? and have explored the boxed components and play rules of this intrig?uing project.

Check out this 6: Siege The Board Game overview video, from Geek & Sundry's Becca Scott.

As you may be aware, I'm a dedicated Siege fan, but I am most definitely out of the loop when it comes to tabletop gaming I fell off the table some years ago but maybe 6: Siege will be the title that reignites my interest in the scene and the many cool titles that have passed me. I'll be checking out the Kickstarter when it goes live in sixty short minutes and I'm looking forward to the reveal. I can see how the tactical world of Rainbow Six Siege would make for a brilliant board game experience but, much like the core theme of Siege itself,? the key to success will lay entirely in the? execution.

Classic '80s adventure ready to hack 'n' slash again

Publisher Edia has announced that it will be bringing three entries to the classic PC Engine series Valis to Nintendo Switch. The development of Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (1986), Valis II (1989), and Valis III (19?90) for Switch will be funded via a Japanese crowdfunding campaign, with a release penciled in for the series' 35th anniversary in 2021.

As yer boy has told you before, Valis was orig??inally released on PC-88 and MSX home computers and tells the story of an ordinary high-school girl —Yuko Asou who learns that she has been fated to protect three spiritual realms from a foretold monster invasion. Understandably surprised and perturbed by this revelation, our gal picks up the mythical sword "Valis", and begins her extraordinary battle against the minions of the demon lord, Rogles.

Although basic in gameplay, the Valis series was highly regarded for its pioneering use of in-game cutscenes, deep and surprisingly layered storyline, and cool soundtrack. The original trilogy would be followed by a fourth release, Valis IV, which launched on PC Engine in 1991, before being ported to Super Nintendo as Super Valis IV in 1993. The latter title is already available on Switch via the Online app. Oh, there was also a Valis X in 2006, but maybe ch?eck out that one incognito...

In addition to the Nintendo Switch release, Edia is hoping to release a fresh reprint of the original Valis trilogy for use on PC Engine hardware. So if you ?have one of those cute plastic squares lying around, you might be able to make some brand new purchases for it in 2021. Who would've thought it?

Have you played Atari today?

It's finally happening. Four years on from its initial announcement, and two years late from its initial release date, the Atari VCS Console will finally be made available for retail this month. June 15 is the big day, and will see the open-source hardware available to purchase from retailers at a base price? of $300 USD complete with 100 40-year-old games from Atari's golden age. A $400 edition is also markete??d, which includes a gamepad and a classic-style joystick.

It has been a long and turbulent road to release day. The originally titled "Ataribox" was announced in the summer of 2017, with a successful Indiegogo campaign raising an impressive three million dollars in crowdfunding. While these pointed to a positive outlook for the underdog hardware, backers quickly became flustered and concerned as the manufacturer became increasingly tight-?lipped on the details.

Key facts about the newly renamed Atari VCS Console were not forthc??oming, with backers left in the dark in regards to the unit's infrastr??ucture and capabilities, as well as its repeatedly shifting release date. Crucially, not one single game was shown running on the console, which led to a pervading lack of confidence from members of the gaming community.

As the years rolled on, things got tougher on the development front when architect Rob Wyatt quit the project citing unpaid bills for both he and his consultancy firm's services. Additionally, one Feargal Mac who claims responsibility for the original concept of a modern-era Atari console filed suit against Atari, stating that the company reneged on an alleged deal to provide him a cut of the crowd-sourced funds. Then, not long after Atari began physically manufacturing the backer units, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, f?urther hindering production and slowing down distribution. It's been a rough ride, is wha?t I'm trying to say.

Still, it seems that the Atari VCS is now ready to go, despite continued confusion?? in the eyes of the public as to what the console/PC/open source platform is actually capable of. It's definitely been one of the strangest development stories in gaming's recent years. The console is finally ready to land into the hands of? the public, so we'll see how it is received by video game fans and wannabee coders, at least those who can afford to splash the cash to check it out.

Now, about those hotels...

Well, it seems that the game maker is getting set to launch a crowdfunding campaign, which will hit Kickstarter later this summer.

Titled 6: Siege - The Board Game, the finished product ?will see two players battle it out in typical twitchy Siege fashion, seemingly picking their way through a small-scale map as one of a selection of the ga??me's huge roster of operators stylized as cool miniature playing pieces.

Details are still thin on the ground, but Mythic has released the first images of the playing board, featuring a top-down view of the playfiel?d, space-based movement, and 3D models for cover?? and door barricades. Just from this single image, I'm really intrigued as to how the final game plays, particularly as each player moves their team into strategically chosen positions. Given that Siege is all about surveying the scene and out-thinking the opponent, it seems a well-suited brand for tabletop gaming.

You can sign up to receive notifications when t??he Kickstarter campaign is live, but don't fret, as we'll be sure to give you a full recon report once Mythic is ready to ??spill all of the vital deets.

Console ports to follow later in 2021

Dangen Entertainment, in association with developer Altari Games has announced that its crowdfunded anime horror adventure, Lost Ruins, will laun??ch on PC May 13. The?? studios have released a brand new trailer showing the pixelated monster-masher in action.

In Lost Ruins, a schoolgirl awake??ns in a grungy dungeon packed to the rafters with an army of supernatural horrors. Out of her depth, and guided by a mysterious magical being known as Beatrice, our young hero must battle her way through the miserable environment, laying waste to the undead with the help of an arsenal of ranged and close-quarters medieval weaponry.

In addition to this bevy of hefty skull-crushers, a w??ide variety of accessories, outfits, and spells will help boost our lady's abilities as they progress deeper and deeper into the dungeon. Elemental spells, looted equipment, and even the environment itself can be used to help defeat some of the tougher enemies and turn the tide of battle when the odds are severely against our vulnerable hero.

As you can see from the video above, combat in Lost Ruins is particularly methodical, with each weapon having intricate and deliberate animations. Despite the pixelated, 2D visuals, this specifically paced combat seems - dare I say it? - Souls-like. We also get to see some impressive, big-screened boss characters and some stylish visual effects. So while, at first glance, Lost Ruins seems a standa??rd, retro-styled platformer, closer inspection unveils a deeper, more challengi??ng, and more strategic action-adventure than first meets the eye.

It also has a spider-lady, so I'm sold.

Lost Ruins launches on PC M??ay 13. It will arrive on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch later in 2021.

The story behind a genre-defining classic

[Update: The Monsters in the Dark Kickstarter has hit its target goal of $12,000. The crowdfunding campaign will remain open until April 8, at which point the book?? will go through its final proofing and publishing process. It will launch in digital format soon thereafter, with a physical paperback?? to follow in summer 2021.]

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for a new book that will tell the story behind the development of 1994's X-COM: Enemy Unknown, (released in North America as X-COM: UFO Defense and also as UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe), the first release in the genre-defining strategy series that is st??ill zapping aliens and fending off intergalactic invasions to this day.

Monsters in the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense is an independently produced book by author David L. Craddock, who previously penned the excellent Stay Awhile and Listen series, recounting the formation of Blizzard Entertainment and Blizzard North, as well as the development and launch of the legendary Diablo series

"I read David Craddock's book, Stay Awhile and Listen, and I thought it was quite an intricate, deep-dive into the inner workings of Blizzard Entertainment," said X-COM co-creator Julian Gollop. "I would like to see the X-COM book as kind of a historical record of a game that?? was influential. Hopefully, it can provide some inspiration, and also some fascination for how things were done in the early days of the games industry- and in some cases, ?how badly things were done as well."

Monsters in the Dark will trace Gollop's career from his formative years creating pen-and-paper adventures, to his work on ZX Spectrum games - such as 1985's Chaos: The Battle of Wizards and 1988's Laser Squad - to the ultimate conception, design, and development of X-COM: UFO Defense. Despite X-COM's now invaluable contribution to the strategy genre, Monsters in the Dark will recount the tit??le's torrid development, and how the legendary release came within a hair's breadth of being consigned to the cancellation pile.

While Monsters in the Dark is already written and edited, Craddock is looking for $12,000 in crowdfunding capital in order to pay for third-party proofing & editing, as well as printing and publishing costs. Should the Kickstarter reach its goal, then Monsters in the Dark is expected to see publishing in a relatively short space of time, with digital copies tentatively scheduled to release within weeks of the campaign's closure??. This will then be followed by the release of a physical paperback, which is expected to arrive late-June.

505 Games bags publishing rights to crowdfunded adventure

Publisher 505 Games has proudly announced that it will be the publisher for Rabbit & Bear studio's high-fantasy adventure Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes when the title finally releases in 2022.

505 Games released a new video to announce its acquisition of the exciting project's ?publishing rights, which features snippets of gameplay alongside brief interviews with director Osamu Komuta, studio head Yoshitaka Murayama, character designer Junko Kawano, and producer Junichi Murakami, all of whom, naturally, express their delight at securing a publisher.

"We have dreamed of developing a game for genre fans for many years which also celebrates everything we love and have learned as game designers," said Murayama in a separate press release. "Our team is looking forward to working with 505 Games to bring Eiyuden Chronicle to as many fans around the world as possible. Eiyuden Chronicle is both a throwback to the classic RPG games that have entertained millions and a mo??dern, exciting tale of discovery and adventure featuring a cas?t of hundreds of fully realized characters [...] We feel we have the perfect partner in 505 Games."

Eiyuden Chronicle, a passionate and heartfelt homage to the classic Suikoden series, went into production at Rabbit & Bear in 2020, following the amazing success of a runaway Kickstarter campaign. Over 45,000 backers invested a huge $4.5 million USD in the project, which at the time stood as the third-highest Kickstarter video game investment ever. Eiyuden Chronicle is tentatively scheduled for release on PS4, PS5,? PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, with the possibility of a Nintendo Switch release down the line.

Upgrade. Evolve. Destroy.

It feels like we've been talking about it forever, but Granzella's love letter to one of the most inspiring shmups of all-time is nearly cleared for take-off. Publisher NIS America has released a new gameplay trailer, ahead of R-Type Final 2's April 30 launch on PS4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch??.

R-Type Final 2 is a celebration of Irem's iconic interstellar arcade blaster - a re-imagined compendium of vessels, mechanics, bosses, and stages, (not to mention its arsenal of impressive weaponry), cherry-picked from the series' storied history. As showcased in the video below, players will be able to choose from one of a selection of R-9 fighters, before blasting in??to battle with the Bydo Empire, upgrading and tweaking the ship en route into a devastating intergalactic fighter. Even the pilot will have customization options!

The new sequel will marry impressive contemporary visuals and effects to the classic R-Type gameplay that has proven such a hit with shmup fans over the decades, with adaptive difficulty keeping the challenge in each player's respective sweet spot. Additional gameplay modes and online leaderboards will ensure the R-Type faithful will have plenty of reason to keep taking to the stars for another round of galactic mayhem. It's looking pretty slick, that's for sure, and I can't wait to t??ry it out.

See Annie of the Stars in action

Publisher Autumn Games, in conjunction with developer Hidden Variable, has released a new gameplay trailer for Annie, the next character headed to excellent tag-fighter Skullgirls 2nd Encore. No date was revealed for The Star Child's debut, but she is available in Skullgirls Mobile right now.

Annie's gameplay trailer, which you can check out below, sees the literal superstar battling Skullgirls regulars Ms. Fortune, Filia, and Painwheel on the set of her hit TV show, where she showcases her fast-paced, knife-wielding style. Annie - who has been a long time coming - lost out on the character vote during Skullgirls crowdfunding campaign, but has been fortunate enough t?o find her way into the fighter via its mobile counterpart

Also, in a surprising bit of news, the trailer ends with the tease that another new character will be joining the Skullgirls roster soon. This will no doubt get the community speculating on who is about to step into the spotlight, but I'm personally hoping for ice-cold, gun-toting assassin Black Dahl??ia - coincidentally another character who lost out on a vote to appear i??n the main game.

Regardless of who makes the grade, it's great to see Skullgirls find renewed life under Autumn Games and Hidden Variable. Annie will be joining 2nd Encore as DLC in early 2021.

Video gaming sees its highest crowdfunding year to date

Love it or hate it, the concept of crowdfundi??ng came into its own last year - at least in regards to video games - with a record-breaking amount of money raised for gaming-related projects on prolific backer site Kickstarter.

As reported by industry analysts Ico Partners, 2020 saw a total of $23 million USD raised specifically for video game-related projects on the crowdfunding site - representing a 35% increase in backer donations when co?mpared to 2019. Ironically, the actual number of projects themselves?? was slightly down on the previous year, with 1,331 Kickstarter projects accounted for, compared to 2019's 1,403.

Of course, not every project that opens itself up to the crowdfunding market will achieve its goals, and of the aforementioned 1,331 projects, only 408 actually hit their respective targets. Most notable among these are Suikoden spin-off Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which absolutely shattered its initial Kickstarter goals by raking in a staggering $4.5 million USD in funds.

Despite these impressive numbers, Ico Partners suggests that video games continue to have a rollercoaster ride on Kickstarter, and are yet to return to the same level of prevalence as the medium held in the earliest years of crowdfunding. Regardless, 2020 has seen a definite upturn in both project interest and success stories, which is likely to cont?inue in 2021.
