Crytek boss points finger at Nintendo and EA

Though we've been getting the sense that developers don't seem all that interested in developing for the Wii U, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli explained in an interview that it wasn't because of them that Crysis 3 failed to materialize on the platform. In an interview with VentureBeat, Yerli reveals that a version of the game had been running on W?ii U hardware.

We did have Crysis 3 running on the Wii U. We were very close to launching it. But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn’t launch on the Wii U ourselves — we don’t have a publishing license — Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die.

Business interests win again! Unfortunately, it's these kinds of problems that exacerbate the issue of the Wii U lacking solid software support. I don't know that Crysis 3 was likely to move?? units of Wii U hardware, but it certainly would have sent the message that this is a console perfectly capable of keeping up with the Joneses, something it sorely needs at the moment.

No Crysis of confidence

How about that Crysis 3, eh? The game released yesterday and firmly established itself as the mark by which future videogame graphics shall be measured -- at le?ast for a while. There's no doubt this is one beautiful game when you get it running at full spec, but how is it as a game?

Well, I thought it was pretty good in my review!

What is everybody else thinking, though? Critics around the Web have been generally pretty favorable, with positive reviews across the board. This certainly isn't a "tens everywhere" masterpiece though, with most summaries pointing out the game's flaws and visuals-over-content approach. General consensus is that Crysis 3 is okay, but don't expect a revelation.

We've gathered? some notable reviews for your viewing delight. H??ave fun!

Polygon: "I enjoyed myself despite how muc??h of a step backward the entire game feels from its predecessors. It's a beautiful game with jaw-dropping production values. But it took me a few hours to realize how empty Crysis 3 feels. The best thing I can manage to say about it is this: It didn't get in my way??. But I would have had more fun if Crysis 3 had put up a fight." [7/10]

Edge: "Crysis 3 has neither direction nor freedom, though it does have human weapons, alien weapons, a cloaking device, an Armour mode, and a bow. And with this many options at your disposal, Crysis 3 insists, surely you must be having fun." [6/10]

PC Gamer: "The legacy left by Crysis, assuming this is the last we’ll see of the franchise in the near future, is much different than the craterous impact the original game made in 2007. It’s still a terrific, dazzling action experience with a core mechanic that empowers you, and ultimately, this feels more like Crysis 2: Episode 2 than a sequel that deserves your maximum enthusiasm." [81/100]

IGN: "It’s not quite a next generation experience come early, but it’s a superbly controlled, tightly paced and tactically flexible shooter with a satisfyingly focused story, and an excellent way to tie up the Crysis series... for now." [8.5/10]

Penny Arcade Report: "Crysis 3 is filled what what could have been interesting subplots and ideas, but Crytek seemed hesitant to commit fully to any of them. The result is a competent, fun, but ultimately forgettable experience." [N/A]

Eurogamer: "That true panoramic freedom is still missing in action, the campaign's rather undernourished as it rushes you into the final act and the fiction feels increasingly forgettable. There are charms here, though, if you boot up the tactical display and stick to the shadows. There's the silent kill in glorious surroundings; there's the swish of an arrow, the creak of a bow." [7/10]

GameSpot: "The campaign is several hours shorter than Crysis 2's, and doesn't reproduce the thrills that lit up the previous games. Yet on its own terms, this is a full-featured sci-fi shooter that makes it a lot of fun to torture extraterrestrial abominations with the burning rage of their own weapons." [7.5/10]

EGM: "With a single-player campaign that brings the trilogy to a fulfilling close and best-in-class multiplayer, Crysis 3 manages to best its predecessors and deliver a genuinely impressive FPS experience." [9/10]

Sleaze meets sleaze to have a sleazy little baby

The Sun loves to talk about how dangerous those violent videogames are, and frequently runs stories vilifying interactive entertainment for inspiring crime and teaching the youth of Britain all sorts of terrible things. Still, that won't stop it from running pictures of a naked lady in the name of advertising Crysis 3

This tabloid's love of basically-porn-that-somehow-isn't-porn has been a long-standing hypocrisy every time it tries to play the moral guardian, but things get extra delicious when its love of the scant is used to promote the very videogames it demonizes. Not that Electronic Arts is off the hook, either -- it makes itself look like a mainstream doormat by cuddling up to a half-baked "news" rag with a firmly established anti??-game agenda.

The woman, as a matter of general information, is Ashley Roberts, a judge on one of the dozens of "people performing a thing in a contrived thing" TV shows Britain has. As there's no way of running this story without a picture of her, but no way to criticize t?he picture without s?ubsequently being a hypocrite, I have plastered a great big Ekans over her nuddy regions. I've also added a Skitty in the corner, for fashion's sake.

Long story short -- the Sun's a load? of two-faced drivel, Electronic Arts should have mo?re respect for its games than this, and Ekans is still the best Pokemon.

Crytek's latest does battle with Nvidia's 'Gaming Super Computer'

Today, hardware reviewers were able to lift the lid on NVIDIA's latest beast, the GeForce GTX Titan. Boasting a GK110 chip with 2688 CUDA cores and loads of other stuff I ba??rely und?erstand, NVIDIA claims that when you rock three of these things in SLI, you get the world's first gaming super computer.

So far, so prideful.

With a trio of these behemoths, my job was simple. I'm a software guy -- I make other people do my hardware stuff, and then play I games. Crysis 3 is one such game, and with Crytek suggesting next generation consoles won't touch wh?at its latest first-person shooter in the graphics dep?artment, there's no better test of the Titan's mettle.

The above video (nabbed with FRAPS) shows Crysis 3 running at 60fps on max settings and, while YouTube doesn't quite do it justice, you ought to be able to get the general idea. At a resolution of 1920x1280 (aiming for higher in the near future), the Titan largely has no trouble getting Crysis 3 to look as good? as all tho??se pretty screenshots Crytek loves to shove down our mouths, all while maintaining a smooth sixty frames of arrow-slingin' mayhem.

Crysis 3 doesn't really care ab?out your hardware situation, callously tossing out intense rainstorms and huge fields of swaying grass like so much computer-shredding confetti. Thus armed with this hardware, however, I laugh at Crytek, laugh loudly while jiggling my fat around and burping up various acidic liquids -- such is my new decadence. Sp?eaking of which, here's the rig Origin PC (not EA's Origin, damn that confusion!) put together to test everything:

Chassis: Corsair 800D
Motherboard: Intel DX79SR (SATA6Gb/s USB 3.0)
Processor: Intel Core i7 3930K LGA 2011 Hex-Core Processor (12MB L3 Cache) with ORIGIN CRYOGENIC Custom Liquid Cooling CPU and ORIGIN PC Professional Overclocking to 4.9 GHZ
Graphics Cards: 3-WAY SLI NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN’s with ORIGIN CRYOGENIC LIQUID Cooling Solution and Professional Overclocking
Memory: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866Mhz
Hard Drive 1 and 2: DUAL 120 GB Corsair Neutron SSDs in RAID 0
Hard Drive 3: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black SATA 6.0Gb/s, 7200RPM, 64MB Cache
Power Supply: 1.2 Kilowatt PSU Corsair
Optical Drive: 12X Blu-ray (BD) Disc Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
Cyberlink Power DVD Playback Software
40 in 1 Media Card Reader
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Obviously what I have is a massive, expensive beast, and the Titan's aren't cheap. The recommended retail price for one of these things is $999, so if you want three of them, prepare to sell one of your children to the nearest friendly off-the-grid genetic research facility. It'll have to be one of your good children too -- dominant genes, h?ealthy teeth, the works.

NVIDIA's been keen to point out that you don't need three cards and a humongous computer to get everything looking swish, and says a number of manufacturers are going to be making fast, powerful, but adorably small machines. That's good news for those who don't like their rigs taking up much space -- personally I like them as big as I can get them, to make up for feelings of inadequacy in every single other? aspect of my life.

As much as I've loved rocking this thing, even the Titan breaks a sweat when the game decides to get really serious. In some of the most intense areas -- chiefly some of the stormy kill zones in the campaign's opening chapter -- I've encountered some slowing down, with brief dips to 40fps. These moments are rare, in my experience, with the Titan ultimately shrugging off most of what Crysis 3 can throw at it.

Due to some hardware errors that required fixing (caused by the fine delivery people of Mississippi and their inability to read "FRAGILE" on a box), I've not had as much time as I'd have liked before providing my initial experience, but rest assured I'll be spending a lot more with it over the coming days. The Titan has become the way to play Crysis 3, and I can't wa?i?t to see how it holds up going forward.

Stay tuned to Destructoid for a full on PC Port Report, detailing how good a job the master race versi?on of ?Crysis 3 is when compared to its console brethren (spoiler: a pretty damn good job!)

Step three: Prophet!

Crysis 2 was seen as something of a black sheep by fans of the original Crysis. I personally loved it, but others were turned off by its comparatively linear environments and plain New York backdrop. For many, the open jungle of Crysis was sorely missed.

Crysis 3 hopes to strike a compromise between the worlds of previous games, presenting a literal urban jungle. New York is overgrown with lush vegetation and fields of grass, while the remnants of concrete structures poke out amongst the green. The result is a game that looks lik??e neither installment, yet plays a little like both.

Though maybe?? not quite in the ratio fans had hoped for.

Crysis 3 (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: Crytek
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Released: February 19, 2013
MSRP: $59.99

Those expecting a full-on return to Crysis' original glory days will be left disappointed, as Prophet's latest adventure bears far more in common with Crysis 2 than first glances may indicate. For much of the campaign, Crytek's richly designed concrete jungle is played mostly for aesthetics, with the occasional open environment serving more as a placebo than an actual attempt to break predetermined structu??re.

This is not to say the results are necessarily bad. To be quite honest, I'm one of the rare few who preferred Crysis 2 over the original, so the more focused environments and organized combat arenas suit me down to the ground. As Prophet, players will once again be charged with the task of systematically taking out Cell operatives and, later, alien Ceph warriors, in various kill zones intricately designed to allow for balls-out combat or subtle, predatory stealth. As with Crysis 2,? the solo campaign is essentially a chain of these kill zones, stit?ched together by very pretty scenery, with the obvious joy coming from cloaking up and picking off the opposition one by one.

To aid stealthy players in their quest, returning ally Psycho quickly provides a high-tech compound bow, designed for silent kills. Unlike other weaponry, the bow keeps players invisible during use, allowing one to feel? more like The Predator than ever before, silently eliminating an increasingly nervous and paranoid enemy force. Easy to use, and able to switch between arrows that explode, electrify, and take down heavy armor, players can almost blow through the entire solo mode with one new toy. This leads to the bow becoming -- if you'll pardon the ironic metaphor -- ?something of a double-edged sword.

The bow is, indeed, lots of fun to use. It's rarely not amusing to pick one's way through a Cell base, forcing arrows mercilessly through the heads and throats of mortals, reserving the occasional electric arrow to fry anybody foolish enough to be standing in water. So effective is this weapon, even helicopters can be sent crashing hilariously to earth with just two thermite shots. The downside is, as you may have already guessed, Crysis 3 is often a remarkably easy experience, and the bow is so infinitely superior to any other weapo??n, it feels almost silly to use alternative firearms.

As with the last game, a lot of combat can be bypassed entirely by cloaking, the only challenge being one's need to find the odd hiding spot where Prophet can recharge his suit's energy. At first, the player feels devious and ghostly, sneaking past fools with all the grace of a demon's whisper. Having already experienced this in Crysis 2, however, the experience soon grows far less edifying, especially once the more armored Ceph threaten to turn the game into a more bog-standard shooter. Despite Crysis 3 boasting a fairly short campaign (we're talking five or six hours), I was quite r?eady for it to be over before the final credits rolled.

There are some definite high points, despite the overbearing feeling of familiarity and ease. Some of the quasi-open areas, aside from looking quite beautiful, boast optional side missions with rewarding upgrades or unique weapons. Areas covered in tall grass hide now-feral Stalker Ceph, who run through the greenery and try to hide, before closing in for sneak attacks. These moments are at least quite interesting, and manage to break up the monotony. Vehicular sections make the occasional appearance too, and include an excellent road trip sequence evocative of Half-Life 2's wonderful "?Highway 17" level (though with far better buggy controls).

Crysis 3's story is absolutely ridiculous, and thinks it's far more intense than it actually is, but nonetheless remains inoffensive and is at least presented with stylish confidence. The return of Psycho is quite welcome indeed, and the game's plot very much becomes his own as much as Prophet's. Dealing with the (physically and mentally) painful loss of his nanosuit at the hands of Cell, and now leading an embittered resistance movement, Psycho's envy of Prophet's power and feelings of inadequacy after becoming human again drive a lot of the conflict, while making for a character far more compelling than one might originally suspect. The supporting cast aren't so interesting, and this gam??e desperately needed an actual villain to center on, but nonetheless you have a story with some genuinely rousing moments, backed up by a sublime musical score that makes the action feel a lot more interesting than it may actually be.

While the campaign feels like something of a step back, multiplayer has at last come into its own. Building on the "Call of Duty with super powers" foundation first established in Crysis 2, Crytek has expanded its online combat in all directions. There are more levels to gain, more weapons to unlock, more ways to play and an almost overwhelming number of optional challenges to comp?lete.

The urban jungle setting really comes into its own during online competition, providing a mixture of dilapidated interiors and thick overgrowth in almost every map and ensuring all types of players -- from armored gunslingers to perpetually cloaked assassins -- can exploit their surroundings for the best possible performance. Multiplayer across most of the gametypes quickly descends into pure chaos, with players materializing from right under their opponent's noses, mowing through ranks with terrifying alien weaponry, and jumping from high ledges to obliterate enemies with devastating shockwaves. In many games, this could be a messy, even sloppy, affair. Crysis 3 maintains a nice balance and, by en??suring each player can tweak their powers to suit their playstyles without becoming too much of a deity, carefully sustains an aura of carefully controlled anarchy.

While Crysis 3 boasts the usual offering of deathmatch and capture-and-hold modes, the Hunter gametype by far stands as its jewel in the crown. This mode pits two nanosuited players against a larger squad of Cell operatives, armed only wit?h their basic weapons and innate wit. Hunters are perpetually cloaked and armed with deadly bows, and any Cell player they eliminate will respawn as a Hunter. The goal for the hunters is to wipe out Cell, while all Cell has to do is survive for the allotted timeframe. While such elimination modes have bee??n present in other games, it's an absolute blast here, and something I've found immensely replayable.

While it's obviously fun to be an invisible killer and pick off your inferior enemies, Hunter mode is far more entertaining as a Cell operative. Bringing back the feeling of hilariously helpless panic experienced in such titles as Aliens vs. Predator 2, it's never not amusing to ??be a disadvantaged human, clutching your shotgun in the corner of a room while yo??ur allies are sniped all around you, and your motion detector rings ever louder in proximity to otherwise silent stalkers. It's also immeasurably exhilarating to run into a hunter, start firing off rounds desperately, and actually manage to kill one.

As you might expect, Crysis 3 is absolutely gorgeous to behold. A more detailed look at the PC version is coming soon, but I've experienced it at max settings and can confirm it's absolutely breathtaking, not to mention far superior to the console alternatives. That said, the Xbox 360 version has not been hit with the ugly stick, managing to pull its weight and provide something visually impressive -- so long as you've not seen the PC version first. The jungle environments and predominantly daytime setting make for a bright and c?olorful world rife with detail. Small elements like swaying blades of tall grass or groups of frogs bouncing around ponds make for a game that feels that much more tangible than most.

Pretty as it may be, however, there are a few minor glitches holding things back, including the occasional physics error that sees guns and NPC limbs spasm temporarily, and a rare few moments where my controls locked up on me. In one situation I got stuck in scope mode, unable to return to my guns, and in a multiplayer session I was able to aim down my gun sights but not fire. These momen??ts seem few and far between, and seem to correct themselves upon returning to a checkpoint or respawning, but they will certainly get?? you killed when they rear their heads.

Crysis 3 attempts to strike a balance between Crysis and Crysis 2, but in doing so manages to lose a little bit of what made each game appealing. The result is a title that doesn't truly match the open-ended excitement of the first game nor the revelatory empowerment of the second, yet manages to provide enough of both to at least tantalize, even if it doesn't completely satisfy. Solo play is shorter than previous installments and not as enjoyable, but multiplayer goes some way toward apologizing f??or it by stepping up its game and providing a gripping new experience in Hunter mode. This is a game that feels like the? very essence of a "third installment" -- Familiar to the point of looking overplayed, but nonetheless refined and suffering no lack of quality.

And hell, e?ven if it does feel a touch too powerful, that big damn bow i??s hard not to love.

The latest trailer for Cyrsis 3 shows off some of the badass powerful weapons you??'ll be able to use. The weapons are all based on set weapon archetypes, just you know, given a futuristic twist. I especially enjoy how you can customize guns on the fly while in a game.

Crysis 3 is out next week on February 17 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Check out our last preview of the game to see how the single-player and the new Hunter Mode are shapi??ng up.

TV spot for Crytek's latest sure to raise a smile

There's a time and a place for dismal, bleak, "dark n' gritty" trailers, but there's a time for silliness too. Crysis 3 is having its silly time with this new trailer, letting us know how much fun it is to b??e a nanosuited badass. Who doesn't love a sharp-dressed man?

This got a smile out of me, at any rate.

Crysis never seems to capture much attention round these parts, but I really enjoyed the last game and I'm looking forward to this one. Anybody else planning on picki??ng it up?

Two maps and modes available, including Hunter mode

With Crysis 3 launching on February 19 in North America and Feb. 21 in Europe, next week's open multiplayer beta seems a bit last-minute, but we'll take it. Available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, the beta contains t??wo modes and will run from January 29 to Feb. 12.

Hunter mod??e involves two players with Nanosuits and bows tracking down 10 CELL troopers (14 troopers in the PC version) before the time runs out. Slain opponents will then join them as hunters in typical "infected"-game-type fashion. The other mode, Crash Site, takes a less interesting point-based, capture-and-defend approach to multiplayer.

Two maps, Airport and Museum, will be accessible, and the beta also has Crysis 3's New Yor?k Feed feature, an in-game social feed that tracks dynamic challenges among your friends. Worth a look for Hunter alone, I'd say.

EA doesn't seem to see the point

The Wii U was supposed to be a console equal to (or better than) the PS3 and Xbox 360, capable of running the same games and thus expanding its third party library. However, it's not quite gone down that way, with Crysis 3 being the latest title to snub the system.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli confirmed to Digital Spy that Crysis 3 would not be coming to Ni??ntendo's system, claiming that, while Nintendo and EA have spoken, the publisher just doesn't see "enough business drive??" for another supported system.

"I’d love to see it on Wii U," he claimed, "but what I love to see and what gets done at the end of the day are two different things. Even so?, I could initiate it but someone has to sell it, right? If that business decision doesn't make sense, or seems to not make sense for them, it's … not possible for us to make it. We can’t publi?sh ourselves, and that’s the bottom line."

2013's biggest releases all seem to be overlooking the Wii U, with DmC: Devil May Cry, Dead Space 3, and BioShock Infinite all sticking to what they know. Do they feel the Wii U is only good for "gimmicky" games, or do they feel the system's not successful enough? It's doubtful?? anybody in the industry will confess the real reason.&??nbsp;

Either way, it's feeling like a real waste to those who enjoy the console, and it doesn't loo??k good??.

Plus some Hunter multiplayer screenshots

Blink, and you might miss this new trailer for Crysis 3. It's the?? kind of thing that'll pique your interest but isn't long enough to do much more than that.

The video did, however, get me to go look up the game's Hunter mode, which we have new screenshots of. In this multiplayer mode, two nanosuit-wearing hunters stalk Cell troopers before they can reach an evac team. I haven't really been following Crysis 3 much, but t?hat has the potential to be really neat.

Thi??s probably doesn't even need to be suggested, but a mod that turns the hunters into honest-to-goodness Predators would be greatly appreciated.

Again, that’s 500 rounds a goddamned second. Surprisingly enough, hands-off demos behind closed doors are typically boring, with a static crowd sitting around, watching in a cold, sound-proof room. Very rarely does that same audience have any sort of outward reaction from the game they’re witnessing. At least that’s what? I’ve experienced, personally. Behind-closed-doors experiences have always felt a bit odd to me.

So it’s safe to assume that when said robotic audience noticeably expresses their intrigue, the game being shown can be given a few kudos. Crysis 3 was freakin’ sweet. Not only that, but it’s also an absolute trip to see being played in real time, on top-end hardware. But you already knew that, of course, because this is Crysis: arguably the ??most technically gorgeous?? series around right now.

First, I have to talk about how insanely beautiful this game looks. I know you’ve seen the vids, and I know you’ve played Crysis 2, but you haven’t experienced either on a 72-inch screen, at high resolution, with the variety of color that Crysis 3’s level design offers. It’s easy to assume that jaw-dropping lea??ps in graphics are a thing of the past, considering how great games look these days. But? all of this game’s DirectX 11 features are leaps beyond most, if not every other game out right now.

About the level design: Everything in the city of New York has been overrun by the flora and fauna. How plants have managed to so quickly? suffocate modern civilization is beyond me, but it’s everywhere and looks pretty, nonetheless. The contrast of NY’s achromatic grays, browns, and blacks against the greens, blues, and r?eds of the natural surroundings provide a visual dynamic that few shooters bother to provide, let alone games built on such technically advanced engines.

My biggest issue with advanced engines today is that they don’t flex their chromatic muscle enough. While the U3 engine had the privilege of being commercially successful, therefore being utilized differently by others, most developers misunderstand the use of color by mudding the look of their games for the sake of “grit.” Crysis 3 is not unlike most other shooters, but at least understands the aesthetic power of emphasizing colors. I cannot stress?? this enough, for more reasons than just technicality: This. Game. Is. Gorgeous.

As previously stated, though, this is a shooter, and it has a lot in common with others of the genre -- minus the badass suit. And if you’ve played Crysis 2, then very little about this third installment will be foreign to you. You retain a lot of the same equipment, abilities, ??and ??weapons, with the exception of a bow that makes John Rambo's weapon look like something recreational archers use.

As expected, what makes the bow a valuable tool is the different ammo types it uses. Some arrows have explosive tips to them that act as a sort of timed grenade. Another type will electrocute enemies, but also fry several, if a crowd of baddies happens to be standing in water. My favorite, though, would have to be one ki?nd of arrow that explodes above an area, reigning death? down on enemies in a cloud of gray smoke. Think of Prophet as Hawkeye, but with a suit worth millions of tax payers’ dollars.

But, BUT, this arrow shit pales in comparison to the gun that fires 500 rounds a mother-humping second. It’s big, it’s bulky, it sounds like a combination of bees and tearing cloth, and the end result is a cluster fuck of bullets that produces more sparks than I imaging the average processor can handle. If videogame particle effects had parents, this gun (known as the Typhoon) would be the violent, alcoholic father. Say hello to the BFG of Crysis.

I figure that anyone who has a beastly rig already plans on getting this game. It’s the perfect title to flex your system’s hardware. If you plan on upgrading, though, then Crysis 3 is de??finitely a game you want to keep on your radar. Be prepared to paint New York in alien blood this February, 2013.

Crysis 2 has the distinction of being 2011's most illegally downloaded PC game, but Crytek strangely doesn't feel honored. With Crysis 3, the studio is aiming to be more stringe??nt in tackling pi?racy.

"It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game," said senior creative director Rasmus? Højengaard. "But yeah, obviously it’s something we’d like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t wanna buy them. So we’ll do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet."

Although I really enjoyed Crysis 2, common consensus seems to be that it was disliked by gamers. That lack of faith, coupled with people wondering whether their computers could run the thing, is being named as the reason for piracy by some folk. Then again, a demo was released for PC, a f??act many people seem to overlook.

Maybe it was just a secondhand victim of Electronic Arts' decreasing popularity with an increasingly angry fanbase. Who knows? I just hope Crytek fights piracy the right way, rather than inconvenien??ce and punish the paying consumers.

As for Wii U support, Rasmus told us there's "not a fat chance" of the game appearing on Ni??ntendo's next sy??stem. Probably for the best, I still don't see how first-person shooters will be any fun on that hulking controller.

Crysis 3 has been in development for the last 14 months and is set to be "one of the most ambitious games that Crytek has ever done," according to Crytek's Director of Creative Development, Rasmus Hoejengaard. He went on to even describe the latest entry as "the pinnacle of the Crysis franchise."

That's a pretty big claim, but it's hard to see Rasmus' big picture as our time with the game was extremely short. Still, Crytek did show off some cool new features that has me interested in the new direction Crysis is heading.

Crysis 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
Developer: Crytek
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Release: Spring 2013

You are Prophet, who was in the first Crysis and also in Crysis 2 where he *SPOILER ALERT* killed himself so his Nanosuit would be able to adapt to the main protagonist of Crysis 2, Alcatraz. Then some weird things happen, and somehow Prophet and Alcatraz's minds get merged, with Prophet coming out as the dominate force. It's kind of weird, but Rasmus promised it'd be explained further in Crysis 3.

Anyway, it's 20 years after the events of Crysis 2, yet Earth is still in the middle of an invasion by an alien race called Ceph. They want planet's resources, and humans out of the picture. Then you have CELL, a private milit??ary corporation that wants the advanced technology of Ceph, and your Nanosuit.

It's up to Prophet to stop Ceph's plans, and to put an end to CELL's operations. Saving the planet is a big priority for our hero, but he also wants to get revenge for what happened to him and his men. Prophet is taking charge in this?? story, becoming the hunter as opposed to the hunted like in the prior games.

You're also going back to New York, but it's nothing like you remember it thanks to CELL. They've built a giant Nanodome around many major cities in order to contain whatever Ceph forces remain. The Nanodome actually doubles as a super greenhouse too, hyper-accelerat?ing plant growth in order to cleanse the environmental damage caused by Ceph. It only took 20 years for what would have taken 100 years for all the plant life to grow and take over New York, turning it into a quite literal urban jungle. Pretty nice of CELL, but you can be sure they have some nefarious intentions here.

The area we saw was based in Chinatown, which had basically been transformed into a sw?amp. There will be seven distinct environments in all, such as grasslands, canyons and more. The word "sandbox" wa??????????????????????????s thrown around a few times, but we never got a chance to see with our own eyes if we're truly getting a sandbox environment again. It's hard to say for sure, especially as we were only shown about ten minutes of hands-off linear focused gameplay in the swampy Chinatown.

There will be, however, some freedom when it comes to every combat situation. Rasmus referred to it as "AAA: Assess, Adapt and Atta??ck." You're going to find yourself with a vantage point in most cases, allowing you to dec??ide whether you should go in loud or take the stealth approach.

The biggest aid to the stealth gameplay now will be your bow and arrow, Crysis 3's new signature weapon. It's a stark contrast to the super badass soldier that you are, but it is pretty damn cool nonetheless. The big deal here is that you can remain cloaked whenever firing the standard arrow, a first for Crysis. Swapping t?o any of the other type of arrows -- like the explosive tip -- will kick you out of cloak mode however.

CELL also has some news toys at their disposal, like the prototype Typhoon assault rifle that shoots 500 rounds per second. It sounds cool in theory, but I thought it was funny how it took about half a clip from the Typhoon to kill an alien while the bow and arrow was a?? one-hit kill type ??deal.

Lastly on the gun front is the ability to pick up and use Ceph weapons. These weapons are normally DNA locked (Rasmus likened it to the weapons from the movie District 9) but since your Nanosuit is now a hybrid of human and Ceph DNA, y??ou're able to take the alien weapons for yourself. The only Ceph gun we saw was called the Heavy Mortar that launched plasma grenades and missiles. Ceph guns aren't reloadable so you'll have to discard them once spent.

Of course the star of all the Crysis g??ames is your Nanosuit, and you'll still be able to utilize the increased strength, c??loaking, and speed powers as usual. The newest addition to the suit is the ability to hack electronic objects. Crytek wants to keep the hacking pretty simple, and it looks like you just have to wait for a status bar to fill to take command of something like a sentry turret.

That pretty much covers all the bases for all the new key stuff revealed for Crysis 3 so far. Our taste was very small, so it's hard to judge all the new elements in a real gameplay sense. It looked like more of the same, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It also looked gorgeous, but that goes without saying whenever you talk about a Crytek game. I did really enjoyed the fusion of a lush jungle environment over a ravaged New York City. It's kind of like the best of both worlds from Crysis and Crysis 2 in a way.

I definitely need to get some more time with Crysis 3, and it looks like we'll be getting that come E3 this year. Until then I do have good news for you PC folks! Crytek intends on releasing versions of the game optimal for everyone, including high-end computer rigs on day one. Very good news, especially since no one wants a repeat of what happened with Crysis 2 in this case.

Following last week's leaks, Electronic Arts has had no choice but to spill the beans and announce Crysis 3, reveal?ing its 2013 release projection and limited edition plans.

Crysis 3 returns to New York, with Prophet returning to find the city trapped in a "Nanodome" by the Cell Corporation. It promises "seven distinct and tr??eacherous environments" as the city b??ecomes engulfed in natural flora, having turned into an "urban rainforest." This seems to confirm suggestions that the game would blend the jungle setting of the first game with the city environments of the second.

Gameplay has been described as "sandbox," so don't expect it t??o be as linear as the la?st one.

Pre-order bonuses have already been revealed, with select retailers offering various multiplayer packs, detailed below. Furthermore, the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition is available to pre-order now, and includes the "Hunter" Nanosuit module, a bonus XP boost??? for the multiplayer, three exclusive dog tags, and a unique skin for the debuting composite bow weapon.

Crysis 3 will be available in Spring of next year.

Stalker Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey fr?om the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal? shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.

Spewing 500 roun?ds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.
Predator Pack – Includes the base game, all the Hunter Edition content and the following earl?y multiplayer unlocks: the Predator Pack delivers early multiplay??er access to the Feline submachine gun and exclusive camo. Crysis 3 has been revealed thanks to somebody at Electronic Arts pulling the trigger early, according to reports. Information for the Crytek sequel, including listings for the limited edition version, appeared on the service ahead of its expected announcement in Game Reactor magazine.

The main image shows our hero (presumably Alcatraz, or what is left of him) with a science fiction bow. Behind him is what looks like a city building, which means we might be seeing more of New York and less of the jungle again. Naturally, Origin's eaten the evidence, but NeoGAF has a lot of it preserved.

I really enjoyed Crysis 2, so I'm excited to see wha??t we get this time ?around. Count me in!
