In the Fall of 2022, Netflix and CD Projekt Red released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an animated prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 that became one of the year's biggest sleeper hits. During Geeked Week 2024, the two studios revealed they're getting back together to make another animated project set in the Cyberpunk universe.

Netflix's new Cyberpunk project won't be Edgerunners Season 2

The announcement came as a brief but stylish trailer that barely reveals anything about this new project. All we know with any certainty is that this new Cyberpunk project will again play out in the mechanized jungle that is Night City. The trailer's description also confirms that Netflix Animation?? will be involved, proving that this will be an animated production.

I'm not surprised that Netflix is bringing us more Cyberpunk animation. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was an earth-shattering success, so much so that Cyberpunk 2077's 1.6 and 2.0 Patches added a pletho?ra of Easter Eggs an??d references to it. I've binged the series three times since 2022, and I'm sti?ll reduced to a sobbing mess by ??the time I reach the last episode.

Unfortunately, whatever this new Cyberpunk series (or film) ends up being, it won't be a continuation of Cyberpunk Edgerunners. CDPR confirmed long ago that they had no plans to produce a second season of Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and I, for one, am perfectly okay with that. David Martinez and his crew's adventures ended on ??a heartbreaking?? but satisfying note, and it'd be wrong to take that sense of closure away by trying to continue the story.

While we won't get Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2, we've known that CDPR has been planning to make other animated projects set in Cyberpunk 2077's world. Hopefully, this new entry will be just as nova as Cyberpunk Edgerunners was.

Out of all the new characters to be announced for Guilty Gear Strive at EVO 2024, I don’t think Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was on anyone’s bingo card. 

In a now private video, Arc System Works revealed a new three-versus-three mode, new stages, and four new characters including fan favorites Dizzy and Venom as well as Unika from the upcoming Guilty Gear Strive anime. But most surprising of all is a gu?est character: ??Lucy.

We here at Destructoid love Edgerunners �it has a gripping story that expands the Cyberpunk world in whole new directions and just has some phenomenal characters. Lucy is an odd addition to the world of Guilty Gear, but i??n the grand scheme of things it ??isn’t all that weird.

Guilty Gear has similar themes and visuals to the world of Edgerunners, with bombastic over-the-top artwork and individualist ideas. Both Arc System Works and Studio Trigger are known for their flashy?? action, so I think Lucy will fit well into the roster.

We won’t see Lucy playable until 2025, so we’ll have to wait a while until w?e get to see her in action and how she fits.

Cyberpunk, the very specific trademarked intellectual?? property, not the overall genre, has hit a welcome point of critical mass.

High-quality spin-offs shall be combined as the hugely successful Netflix show from CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger will join forces with the innovative Combat Zone skirmish game from Monster Fight Club. If you watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners and thought, "I would love to take this goddamn rollercoaster of a tv show and the characters I love so much and watch them duke it out on the mean streets of Night City in the miniature form," then you are in luck. The heart-wrenching mini-series is being converted into tabletop form by the delightful folks behind the Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone game that launched last year.

Combat Zone quickly became one of ?my favorite skirmish games due to the smooth flow of combat, no-nonsense rules, and overall accessibility of the design. There is little waiting involved in these fights as the alternating activations and React system mean there is always a reason to pay attention and plan your countermoves. The central mechanic that makes the game so easy to pick up is the color system. The "Limiter" that is used to measure distance, all your character skills and abilities, and the dice themselves all work on a simple three-color rule. Just roll th??e red, yellow, or green dice that match your chosen action to see what happens.

Monster Fight Club is also boxing clever on this project. The base game comes with the rulebook, a scenario book, a gameboard, some terrain made from high-quality cardboard, character cards, relevant loot and gear cards, and all the t??okens and Limiters you need to play. On top of that, it includes 24 full-color acrylic standees of your favorite characters from the S??anto Domingo Edgerunners or some of Araska's most powerful goons, led by Adam Smasher. This will keep the price down and make it very accessible for folks out there who might be drawn to tabletop gaming for the first time.

If, like me, you enjoy poking pigment around on plastic, there will also be a full range of miniatures available. I obviously can't speak for the quality of those minis just now, but I am extremely pleased with anything I have purchased from Monster Fight Club to date, including the Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone base game and some additional gangs. All in all, I'm pretty stoked for this release, although details on ?how it will be coming to market are currently thin on the ground. Based on the usual MFC business model, I would assume a Kickstarter campaign will be likely.

The 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077 is out, and it contains a ton of changes big and small to CD Projekt Red's RPG world. But hidden away in 2077 is a reference just for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans, and an especially emotional one at that.

It's no surprise that, after the massive popularity of the Studio Trigger and Netflix anime, CD Projekt would find a way to work the world of Edgerunners more into its digital Night City in Cyberpunk 2077. Heck, we've already seen a few additions, ranging from a special gun to David's signature jacket. With the 2.0 update, though, CD Projekt Red put in a tribute to not just one or two, but several different characters who all made Cyberpunk: Edgerunners what it is.

(Spoilers will follow for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, so go watch it if you haven't yet. Seriously, it's very good.)

Head to the Columbarium

To find these tributes, head to the Columbarium on the east side of Night City. It's the site where NC denizens can purchase niches, to commemorate the dead. Throughout Cyberpunk 2077, different characters who die will get their own site here, with loving messages left behind. And if you've seen Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, you're proba??bly ??ahead of me on where this is going.

As spotted by players around social media, Edgerunners lead David Martinez now has another official tribute in Cyberpunk 2077 in th??e Columbarium. Head to the main entrance and walk directly forward, towards the dead-end with several text inscriptions all around, and you'll spot David among them.

The inscrip??tion reads: "You didn't take me to the moon, but you were there with me." Feels like a ??pretty obvious confirmation that Lucy left this tribute for David. And it's not the only one, either.

Scattered around the Columbarium, both near David's location and other parts among the many rows, are tributes to other Edgerunners characters. I found Gloria Martinez, K?iwi, Rebecca, Maine, and a bunch of the crew. All seem to be written by Lucy, too.

While this isn't a confirmation that Lucy's running around somewhere in the interactive world of Cyberpunk 2077, it at least leaves a lasting mark of Edgerunners on the video game. And a pretty somber one, too. It's a terrible time for rain, while I'm sitting here, writing this.

Whether more secret references to Edgerunners are hidden away in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, we'll have to see, The patch notes that confirmed there was an upda??te to the niches at the Columbarium also tease that "more secrets" are waiting to be discovered in Night City.

Players will have to discover them. Given that there's a new update?? out now and a great expansion right around the corner, there probably won't be a shortage ?of secret-hunters on the prowl.

Cyberpunk 2077 is celebrating two milestones at the moment, starting with the one-year anniversary of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. The official Twitter made sure to remind us that, somehow, an entire year has passed since the series premiered on Netflix. Add in the fact that the Phantom Liberty expansion is looming on the horizon and you have reason enough to revisit Studio Trigger's evocative take on Night City. 

One of Trigger's heavy-hitters helped celebrate the anniversary and point us toward the upcoming release. Yoh Yoshinari, who has a long history in the anime industry and has been with Trigger from the start, did so with a new illustration. The piece of Edgerunners art puts Lucy next to Songbird, one of the netrunners featured in Phantom Liberty. Check out Yoshinari's dynamite work below.

My Moon My Man

Like Edgerunners director and Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi, Yoh Yoshinari did a lot of work with Gainax prior to Trigger. This included everything from handling key animation for Gunbuster 2 and FLCL to directing the Gurren Lagann Parallel Works OVA. Yoshinari also directed the Little Witch Academia and BNA: Brand New Animal anime at Trigger. For Edgerunners, he provided storyboards, character des??igns, chief animation ?direction and more.

As nice as it would be for this art to herald a second season of Edgerunners, it remains a standalone series. Considering how well Trigger adapted the world into a tightly-paced 10 episodes, perhaps that's for the best. Besides, if you need a Cyberpunk 2077 fix, you have update 2.0 on September 21 and Phantom Liberty on September 26.

In a quarterly earnings call held yesterday, Polish studio CD Projekt RED noted that it would be looking into more opportunities "in the transmedia space" following the smash success of Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners �an animated adaptation of the developer's hi-tech RPG Cyberpunk 2077.

While CDPR has already noted that it does not have plans to produce a second season of the flashy 'n' savvy series, the studio has been made very aware of the lucrative and creative potential of such projects, and, as reported by VGC, has made clear that it will be looking into simil??ar adaptations in the future �be it through film, animation, and/?or streaming series.

Premiering in September of this year, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners offered up 10 episodes of rebellious, electric action, winning over fans with its flashy visuals, futuristic vistas, and gun-toting breakout star, Rebecca. The success of Edgerunners is hardly teaching CDPR any new lessons, given the global praise heaped upon The Witcher �another Netflix productio??n that resides within CDPR's big book of brands.

The success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is another example of mode??rn media's creeping realization that adaptation and crossover is a far easier route to the Big Bucks than creating a fresh universe from scratch. You already have the world and its "rules" laid out for you, and you even a potential crossover audience from the get-go. Fans of a brand in one form of media are often given to swiftly switching over to another, and vice versa. As such, we can expect to see many more examples of this in the continuing era of digital entertainment.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is now available exclusively on Netflix.

While CD Projekt RED's sci-fi epic Cyberpunk 2077 had something of an inauspicious launch, (to put it lightly), the same cannot be said for its animated spin-off Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which? launched to?? immediate praise from critics and audiences upon its release to streaming service Netflix.

However, despite the fans' instant love for its dazzling Day-Glo visuals, nihilistic aesthetic, and manic breakout star, Rebecca, it seems that further adventures of David Martinez and his anarchic army are unlikely.  In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, CDPR distri?ct manager S??atoru Honma acknowledged the success of the Studio Trigger-produced series, but noted that there are currently no plans to extend its now-told tale.

"I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback," said Honma (translation via VGC). “However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planne?d as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background�"

Honma notes that while it is not impossible that further Cyberpunk 2077 anime may be produced, it is just as likely that it would feature a separate standalone story set against the neon-stained backdrop of Night City, rather than a continuation of the characters and events featured in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. There is clearly much to be explored in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and while we should never say never in this highly lucrative world of media streaming, it is possible that the Edgerunners' chronicle? has reached its clear conclusion... No more Rebecca? Don't tell the internets.

Get some new style and crank the tunes

It's no secret that a lot of people are logging back into Cyberpunk 2077 right now, thanks to Edgerunners. And for those who maybe want a little more of that series in their game, there are already some solid Cyberpunk: Edgerunners mods for 2077.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted on Netflix a few weeks ago, and the Studio Trigger anime is absolutely stellar. And it, alongside several big patches, is likely the reason behind 2077's sudden spike in player count.

Whether you'll find more of Edgerunners in Cyberpunk 2077 is a different topic entirely, as the two are mostly separate stories. You can find some cameos of 2077 characters in Edgerunners, and 2077 has a tie-in quest line and some tidbits for Edgerunners. And?? obviously, both sprin??g out from the tabletop series.

PC mods are tying Edgeunners and 2077 even closer together, though. So here's a selection of some mods to tinge your virtual Night City adventures with some Studio Trigger style. (All via NexusMods.)

Switch up your style

A common pick for mods is to add the actual style of the Edgerunners characters as options for Cyberpunk 2077. Rebecca, for example, has her twin-tails and body tattoos both available as mod-in options for V, the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077.

Maybe Lucy is more your style, and you'd like to pick up her signature suit and jacket. Or just go all-out with a face preset mod. Just play Lucy in the world of 2077.

David might already have his jacket in-game through the Edgerunners tie-in quest, but this mod re-crops it for female V if you want a different fit, and adds an alternate color option. Or use this one to get David's hairstyle as an option.

Pick up some arms

Patch 1.6 for Cyberpunk 2077 also added an Edgerunners weapon, in Rebecca's shotgun. (No spoilers on w?here to find it, but you'll have a pretty good idea of where it might have dropped if you've seen the whole series.)

If you want Rebecca's pistols, though, there's a mod for that. As well as one for Lucy's pistol and David's pistol, too. I couldn't find anything else as?? of the time of this writing, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some more ??pop up.

Set the Edgerunners vibes

If you want something to just add a smidge of flavor, there are plenty of little add-ons too. One lets you put some Edgerunners posters in V's apartment. A few can replace menu music with tunes from the show, like "I Really Want To Stay At Your House" and "This Fire", or put Lucy on your load-in screen.

My personal favorite out of all these is Edgerunners Radio, which adds a new radio station that just plays music from Cyberpunk Edgerunners. While many of those songs are actually songs that were already in Cyberpunk 2077, the anime series gave them a bit of new life. This PC mod lets you just put those on as you cruise around Night City in Cyberpunk 2077.

Seeing as CD Projekt Red has rolled out some official mod tools with its recent updates too, I wouldn't be surprised to see this scene take off a bit. A rising player count and easy access to tools could hopefully make Cyberpunk 2077, at the very least, a fun game to ??latch a bunch of mods onto and ??gaze at the beauty and/or chaos.

After years of letdown, it looks like Cyberpunk has been redeemed

Cyberpunk 2077 has had a pretty tumultuous few years, with all the hype leading up to its launch, players feeling let down when the game finally came out, and then the subsequent redemption as CD Projekt Red patched bugs and expanded on the game quite a bit. More players have been flocking to the title than they have in months, and now Cyberpunk 2077 has reached its highest player count since its release, according to the Steam Charts.

The number of concurrent players hit its peak back in December 2020 with over a million concurrent players after release. By January, however, the count had dropped to just ov??er 80,000, mostly due to the disappointment from broken builds and unfulfilled promises from devs. This past weekend, the numbers were up to over 85,000, which is the most players it has had in nearly two years.

The spike in players is in part due to the release of Studio Trigger's Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, which has been well-received by fans and critics alike. Patch 1.6 for the game also included Edgerunners content, which could have been a draw to return to Cyberpunk 2077?. Then there's the fact that the game has been marked down a considerable amount since release, going as low a?s 50% recently.

This isn't the first time a game has gotten another chance after a launch that let us down. No Man's Sky is a perfect example of this �after Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray promised big things on behalf of the studio, like an infinite number of explorable, unique planets made possible by procedural generation, players found the game to be lacking in depth, and absolutely not delivering on the grandiose promises. Similar to Cyberpunk it's managed to come back with a series of content and quality of life updates, and while it's not quite my thing, I've heard No Man's Sky is a ton of fun now.

Just goes to show that in the modern age of patches and liv?e updates, a bad re??lease is not the kiss of death it once was.

Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red's collaboration is a brilliant fresh lens into Cyberpunk

Legacies are not forged in the way a merc lives in Night City, but how they die. This idea permeates through both the game Cyberpunk 2077, and the newly released Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. 

The runners don’t lead a corpo life. They don’t get Platinum insurance with the Trauma Team. They’re not trying to secure their soul. Everyone is running from, or towards, something. And everyone runs until they can’t anymore. It's this universal pursuit of more that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners dives deep on, to great success.

A long line of Cyberpunk

Comparisons between Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners feel inevitable. Look at the snaking line of influence leading to Edgerunners; it’s a 10-episode anime series, a collaboration between Studio Trigger of Kill la Kill fame and Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red. It’s set in Night City, but one?? that’s adherent to b?oth the video game and its ?roots in the Cyberpunk pen-and-paper role-playing game.

What results is a series with the visual flair and cinematography of Studio Trigger; the sights, sounds, and interpretations of imagined concepts into assets that can be rendered and displayed from Cyberpunk 2077; and the world, lore, and drive of Cyberpunk. And like Night City itself, all these ?disparate pieces click together into o??ne whole that is spectacular.

You can see the fingerprints of Studio Trigger on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners everywhere. In obvious cases, that means the studio’s penchant for incredible action sequences, with e?mphasized weight and blows that rip apart everything around them. There’s no shortage of action here, and yes, there ?will be times where characters are practically rubbing foreheads in a verbal stand-off.

The look of the future

Trigger also show??s some incredible character art and designs, though. Particular shots stuck with me because of how gorgeously they were framed, and the details included in the frame. The look?? of this world is certainly heavily informed by what’s come before, but also pushes to establish its own identity within it. 

Even just the main character’s jacket becomes a visual signifier, an immediately recognizable piece of the character as much as Kamina’s glasses from Gurren Lagann. Studio Trigger is given a host of source material to draw from?, but then also the freedom to build their own story up and over it.

It’s because of the unique lens that Trigger has been given that it can explore Night City in new and interesting ways. One misunderstanding I’ve seen from those just catching up on Edgerunners is thinking it’s a Cyberpunk 2077 tie-in game. While cameos happen from time-to-time, it’s not in any way part? of V’s story.

R?ather, it follows David Martinez, a young boy whose single mother pulls extra hours and side hustles to put him through Arasaka Academy. David’s mom dreams of him rising to the top of Arasaka, of escaping the life they have: barely making ends meet in a mega-slum.

Life in Night City

When we see David Martinez’s daily routine in the first episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it’s a beautiful contrast. He walks out of their apartmen?t and over bodies. He leaps down several flights into garbage that is always there to catch him.

The further he goes towards the start of his day at the academy, the more we see fast-moving suits replace bodies on the streets.?? Smog gives way to clean air and falsified atriums. But David is looked down upon in school. To one in particular, he’s someone who brings a sickly reminder of those parts of Night City to school every day, to a place where it shouldn’t belong.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gets a chance to explore these ideas in ways Cyberpunk 2077 never quite did. That story was concerned with V and Johnny Silverhand. It’s a constant race against time, as you deal with various factions who may or may not be able to get Ke??anu Reeves out of your head before it destroys your soul.

The edge of the line

For David, we see his life explode i?n a moment. We see how fast life can change in Night City, and how its systems do nothing to soften the blow. One of the most heart-wrenching moments early is when David is told his health care package doesn’t allow for visitation. A grim, sympathetic moment.

Edgerunners explores sides of Night City that V never does. The rise up ?the ladder for David does still get a bit of a montage, but it’s more drawn out. There’s an ensemble cast that interacts with each other. We see them hang out and do crime together. Little changes appear in them over periods of time.

We see cyber-psychosis, an affliction where people with too many artificial machine parts disassociate and go insane, explored in detail. In Cyberpunk 2077, it's just the motivator for a set of ambient combat encounters in the world. It's not something V can succumb to. But in Edgerunners, we see the ever-thinning line between getting more chrome to sta??y alive, and that chrome pushing one towards their doom. We see it in excruciating detail.

But I really wanna stay

As David falls in with a crew and strives to become an edgerunner, someone who carries out jobs for fixers to make a life for themselves in the city, we get exploration of all of them. Lucy,? one of the main focal points of the story, is a netrunner with an unknown past haunting her. Maine, Kiwi, Becca, and others all make up a memorable motley crew that fights through hard times together.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners really succeeds in little ways, like how it adapts pieces of Cyberpunk 2077’s interpretations of the world. Studio Trigger incorporates a surprising number of details from the game. It’s not just city visuals and real locales, or the name-dropping (and even cameo appearances) of fam??ous runners from through the years in Night City.

I love the way Edgerunners uses the call noise and icon. In a video game, where the player is in first-person and following a quest or set of events, the calls act as talking heads. But in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, they’re just another means of communic??ation. Calls and texts co??mmunicate story, but also emotional state. 

Night City calling

One character carries on? a conversation non-verbally, while engaged in some other activities. In an early scene, a stream of aggressive, angry text serves to ramp up the tension, tightening and tightening the screws until they warp and twist. In a particularly memorable scene, we s?ee Lucy staring at a “calling�icon, waiting for a response. The dial tone we’ve heard throughout the series is the only sound we get.

It’s really neat when you can visually see net?runners flipping through the sequence-matching minigame shown in Cyberpunk 2077, or characters talking about weapons that are common in ??the game. It makes Trigger’s Night City feel even more familiar, especially for those who have already explored this world in the game.

The Cyberpunk future

But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners also makes me hopeful for more stories to come from Night City. After my time with Cyberpunk 2077, I was pretty cool on the idea. CD Projekt has said they plan to keep supporting the IP, and I wasn’t keen on seeing more of it.

Now, seeing what this collaboration manages to pull off in ten episodes, I want to see more. It’s a blast to watch, from start to finish. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has moments of intense, explosive action and quiet remembrance. It can tug ??at your heartstrings with sad moments, and then put on an effusively heartwarming pseudo-first date. 

Edgerunners even digs into the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack to? back these moments, finding summer love anthems and tense firefight tunes I had never found while turning the dial in Night City.

As an anime, an adaptation, and an extension of the Cyberpunk world, I can’t recommend Cyberpunk: Edgerunners enough. It’s turned me around on seeing mo??re of what folks can do with this property. And in a short span, it’s proved that there are still many compelling stories to tell in Night City.

Not done with Night City quite yet

There's more news to share about Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red is airing a new Night City Wire, its Cyberpunk 2077 update stream, on September 6.

The new Night City Wire will air on CD Projekt Red's Twitch channel on September 6 at 5 p.m. CEST. For U.S. viewers, that will be at 1??1 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT.

As for what we can expect to see? CD Projekt Red says it will be talking about the upcoming anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The Netflix series is a collaboration with Kill la Kill animation house Studio Trigger, and debuts on September 13. It also just got a very NSF??W trailer and hey, it looks neat.

The developer also says it will talk about what's next for Cyberpunk 2077. That's a bit intriguing. We know an expansion is still in the works for Cyberpunk 2077, although it's been delayed into 2023. Considering the history of CD Projekt Red's expansions, with The Witcher 3 getting absolute stellar ones with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, a Cyberpunk expansion is intriguing.

This synthetic life

Cyberpunk 2077 hasn't had as smooth a trajectory, though. Its launch was infamously rough, especially on previous-generation consoles. And while the next-gen update seems to have been a notable improvement, Cyberpunk has still carried the weight of its launch.

Considering the last Night City Wire hosted the reveal of that patch for Cyberpunk, we can probably expect some degree of news for the game. There are still plenty of narrative threads to tug on in Night City, and plenty to explore in that world. I mean, Ciri does mention visiting a fu??turistic city on her travels.

We will see what CD Projekt Red has in store with its anime and video game soon enough. The Night City Wire arrives just ahead of a big end-of-summer news blitz, which includes a Disney and Marvel showcase and an Ubisoft Forward where we'll see the next Assassin's Creed.

Night City is waiting

A new dive into the world of Cyberpunk is just around the corner. Netflix confirms today that its animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will debut on September 13.

The anime, a collaboration with CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger, also debuted a new and very-NSFW trailer today alongside the announcement.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows David Martinez, a street kid who's trying to get by in Night City. He eventually becomes an edgerunner, or essentially a merc, similar to V in Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully David's big heist??s go smoother than V's did.

David winds up befriending other lost? souls trying to get by in Night City, it seems. Lucy, one of the main characters of the series, has incredible technical abilities but is seeking a way out of Night City and away from her past.

The series is 10 episodes long, and all 10 will drop on Sept??ember 13. No waiting around for each week's new episode ??here.

A high-octane future

I'd normally be a bit lukewarm on the concept of a Cyberpunk anime, seeing how 2077 didn't quite land for me or others. I've gone back since the release of the next-gen update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and while I dig a lot of the little improvements that have been m??ade since launch, I'm still iffy on the overall game.

What's kept me interested in this has been Studio Trigger's involvement. The animation house behind Kill la Kill and Promare has a well-regarded background in over-the-top action. And today's trailer is a mix of over-the-top action and Studio Trigger style. Edgerunners seems lik??e it could at least make fo?r a fun watch.

Netflix has landed some solid animated game adaptations in the past, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has the benefit of drawing on both the video game and the tabletop franchise behind it. Of the many, many video game adaptations in the works, ?this could at least manage to be a fun, futuristic r?omp.

Time to light up Night City

Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners got a new trailer today, and it looks both gorgeous and full of action. Today's trailer lets us meet some of the main cast and see the set-up for the action, as well as how Night City is being adapted into anime for?m.

Anime fans who didn't already know will probably notice right away that Studio Trigger is at the helm. Trigger is the studio behind productions like Promare and Kill la Kill, and boy, does it show in this new trailer. The fast action, berating line reads, and gorgeous style bleeds through in the new Edgerunners trailer.

It does, also, take some quieter moments. Th??e story loo?ks to follow David as he gets tied up in the back-alley gigs of Night City.

Alongside an incredible adaptation of the world and design, based off the tabletop RPG, Studio Trigger also seems to be taking cues from CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077. The call tone, for instance, is the same one used in the video game. And a few of the vistas we see in the trailer are very similar to their 2077 look.

A cyberpunk future

Netflix has had some hits and some misses in the video game adaptation department as of late. On one hand, Castlevania is one of their big series and is currently headed into the Richter Belmont era. And League of Legends series Arcane has been absolutely stellar. But Dragon's Dogma didn't do quite as well on the animated front.

This is Studio Trigger, though, and I think that plus the potential of a good Cyberpunk adaptation is enough reason to tune in. There is still some Cyberpunk 2077 content on the way somewhere down the line, though CD Projekt Red seems like it's mostly moving towards The Witcher for the future. I'm very much into Trigg?er's take on Night City, though.
