September 25 will mark the 5th anniversary of the first release of Dead or Alive 5, Koei Tecmo's beautiful babe and bro brawler that has seen as many re-releases and version updates as it has articles online referring to it as filth. There is the original, Dead or Alive 5 Plus for the PlayStation Vita, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate for last-gen consoles, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round for current-gen consoles, Dead or Alive Ultimate Arcade and the free-to-play Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Core Fighters.

DLC for Last Round has been an ongoing affair. Currently in its seventh season, the total cost for all of the game's DLC is an extremely affordable $633. It's no Train Simulator but g??oddamn that is a lot of money for some costumes. This December, that all comes to an end.

At the Tokyo Game Show, producer Yosuke Hayashi confirmed DLC support for the game will end this year so the team can "focus on the future."I hope this means we'll finally see a Dead or Alive 6 soonish, and hopefully, Venus Vacation's Misaki will be able to make her fighting game debut because she?? looks like she's ready to throw down.

Had no idea this was something I needed so badly

The Dead or Alive series loves its DLC. The latest release, Dead or Alive: Last Round, offers all its DLC costumes together for a $93 USD lump sum. This may definitely be one of the worst aspects of the fighting game genre, but even I succumb to costume DLC from time to time. Especiall?y when it inv?olves my boo Nyotengu. 

Team NINJA revealed a collaborative effort with Arc System Works in which Dead or Alive 5's ladies don outfits from the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series. Highlights include the aforementioned Nyotengu as Guilty Gear's Dizzy, Momiji as GG's Baik??e?n, and Marie Rose as BlazBlue's Platinum the Trinity.

The 16 costumes are currently only available for purchase in Japan and Europe?.

SNK-branded DLC coming this September

Koei Tecmo has teamed up with SNK to bring a bit of King of Fighters crossover to Dead or Alive 5.

As part of the annual Dead or Alive Festival this weekend in Tokyo, developer Team Ninja revealed plans to bring Fatal Fury and King of Fighters' Mai Shiranui to Dead or Alive 5 Last Round as a playable character. The "Knock-out Ninja" will be released sometime this September as paid DLC in tandem with costumes based on King of Fighters and Art of Fighting's Hinako Shijou??, Yuri Sakazaki, and Kasumi Todoh.

 Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is currently available for PS??4, Xbox One, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

78 costumes? That's over a dollar an outfit!

Does it feel like Dead or Alive 5 has been out forever? That's because it has.

Originally released in 2012 (in North America before Japan, by the way) the game has been getting boat loads of DLC, updates, and re-releases, with the last version culminating in Last Round. But if you? thought Koei Tecmo was done with DLC, you were sorely mistaken.

It has just announced a new 16-piece costume set for $18.99, and another "costume pass" that comes with 78 costumes that clocks in at a whopping $92.99. That's worse than the Arkham Knight pass that was mostly skins and bad campaigns.

Of course it's all cosmetic and not a lot different from MOBA titles, but ?there's something about a near $100 Season Pass that really grosses me out. Until you re??alize this is the fourth one.

Incoming character, stage, and ouftit DLC

As much as I like the idea of that hunks-in-swimsuits story sitting at the top of the site's Dead or Alive feed for eternity, release date news and screenshots of another character and stage in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round are worth touching on.

The next few content drops are going to be crossovers. Naotora Ii from Samurai Warriors will debut in Last Round for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 17, 2016, followed by an appearance in the PC version on March 29. She's $5.99 standalone, or $11.99 bundled with her "debut" costume pack (which is $7.99 on its own). There can never only be just one set! Speaking of: a Samurai Warriors costume pack for existing DoA characters drops on March 29.

There's also a bit of free content. Dead or Alive 3's Azuchi stage, based on Oda Nobunaga's real-world Azuchi Castle, hits Last Round (PS4 and Xbox One) on March 17.

Lastly, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja did that thing games do where they try to justify why a crossover character wou??ld show up to fight in a different time period. It's sufficiently silly:

"Dragged into a mysterious portal by-way-of a M.I.S.T. time-traveling experiment, the ruler of Jap??an'?s Warring States era Ii Clan, Naotora Ii, emerges in present-day next to a competitor of the Dead or Alive fighting tournament. Bust out the trunks

I'm not playing Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, much less spending a bunch of money on extra costumes, but like Steven, I c??an appreciate a good ??bit of male swimsuit DLC. You too? Nice.

Although this latest batch of outfits released last week on Xbox One and Steam in time ?for the set's Valentine's Day namesake, it ??won't be ready for PlayStation 4 until tomorrow.

Embarrassing

Team Ninja was supposed to enable online multiplayer for the PC port of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round ??by the end of June, months after the game debuted on Steam??. Hasn't happened.

"[D]ue to major issues found during the beta test, we will be postponing the release of the update," said the studio.? Participants can stick with the beta, if they want, or revert back to the offline game.

"We apologize for the last minute notification and?? regret deeply the trouble we have caused our Steam customers who were looking forward to the online functionality," said Team Ninja. "We will update the website with a new release date as soon as it is set."

I'd also like to point out that there's $294.95 worth of DLC for sale. No, really.

Marvel-ous

Not as on the nose as the Senran Kagura cross over and a bit more creative than the many "as few clothes as possible" packs, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round (the fourth, final iteration of Dead or Alive 5) debuted its super hero costume pack yesterday.

Remember, there's a convenient $93 season pass for all the costume packs in this the fourth release of the same game. Hopefully the PC bugs and missing features have been addressed.

Missing online play, best graphics, and other features

If you're a fan of the Dead or Alive series then you may have been excited to see that Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is finally out on Steam. However, it's probably important for you to know that it's releasing without a bunch of features on PC.

The version of the game on Steam does not currently have online play which is being delayed by around three months from launch. The Steam version also features no achievements, no cloud saves, no gamepad rumble, and ??it is missing a couple of stages. Oh the graphics are also closer to the PS3 version than the PS4 version regardless of how powerful your hardware is.

So, bear all of that in mind if you're planning to pick up Dead or Alive 5: Last Round on Steam.

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is the fourth, final iteration of Dead or Alive 5, but that doesn't mean it can't have bugs or a $93 season pass for all the fighters' additional costumes. I guess Last Round doesn't mea??n "complete" or "here's all the costumes for buying thi?s for a fourth time."

Out now is the second of three Ninj?a Clan packs ($14.50, or $2 each).

A sixteen costume Senran Kagura crossover pack is also slated for this m??onth and the final three costume sets will be released on a monthly basis.

There are known issues and then there are unknown known issues

Koei Tecmo has been riding Dead or Alive 5 since 2012. If you count the PlayStation Vita-enhanced Dead or Alive 5 Plus, the recent Dead or Alive 5 Last Round release marks the fourth iteration. It has a coup?le new characters and stages, a higher resolution on current generation consoles, and? plenty of skimpy costumes.

It a?lso has some bugs, particularly on Xbox One, which sees a lot of crashes while looking for a game online and arcade stick functionality issues. The PlayStation versions have more specific issues. On PS3, you can't tag team Hay??ate and Phase 4, while on PS4, pausing a replay when it shows a Power Blow can crash the game.

The team has a list of known issues? here and ways to try and circumvent some of them.

I excitedly misread a Dead or Alive 5 Last Round press release that began, "THE FIGHTING ROSTER IN DEAD OR ALIVE 5 LAST ROUND CONTINUES TO GROW"

Fighting rooster? It's getting bigger? My ears pe?rked up. Sounds like my kind of character. 

However, it was just an announcement? for a schoolgirl, Honoka.

Some background: "Having been raised all her life by her gentle and loving grandmother, Honoka is a sweet, easygoing kind of girl... but when she sees a fight, she cannot contain her excitement, or the mysterious power surging within her. Honok?a has a strange knack for instantly learning any fighting move she sees. She has kept this power ?hush-hush, but has been itching to test it out in secret. Honoka studies her favorite moves from various sources and fighting styles, and combines them into a unique style which she calls 'Honoka Fu.'"

"Why am I...so ho?t?" the trailer concludes. I ask mysel?f the same question every day.

Armageddon

It's great to see a series like Dead or Alive finally come to PC. Less great, however, is that "Online modes for Dead or Alive 5 Last Round will be added in a patch within three months of rel??ease."

I suppose it comes down to whi?ch we would prefer: getting the feature-incomplete game on Febr??uary 17 alongside the console versions, or having the PC port arrive later with online enabled from day one. Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja thought the former option was the way to go, clearly.

On Steam, they're doing that "pre-purchase rewards" thing in which the more people pay for Dead or Alive 5 up front, the more rewards (in this case, costumes) pre-purchasers get. Those swimsuits aren't going to unlock themselves, and I don't want to miss a thing.

Koei Tecmo details complicated free-to-play situation

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, supposedly the last one with a five? in the title, is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 on February 17, Koei Tecmo announced today.

Team Ninja's upcoming fighting game will carry a $40 price tag on the newer systems, with the more venerable consoles getting a $30 download-onl?y version. 

In addition to the standard retail release, PlayStation 4 owners will be allowed to dip their toes in the pool with Core Fighters, a free-to-play version featuring four pl??ayable characters. Also, plenty of sweet, delicious microtransactions.

It's a little different on Xbox One, though, where there will be a non-expandable free trial. Xbox One users who find themselves wanting more will need to fork over $5 to purchase Core Fighters, ??which comes with four additional characters and the option to spend more money on other things. Makes a lot of sense unless you think about it.

At least Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate players will have the opportunity to transfer over any unlocked titles, costumes, and story progress to Last Round should they choose to upgrade.
