I’ve often wondered: if Dead Rising had released a few years later, would it have done as well? Releasing in 2006, it was at a time when people were just getting acquainted with the Xbox 360 and the new generation of hardware. Games released in that window often get a bump, both crit??ically and sales-wise.

Don’t get me wrong. I have a massive soft spot for the original Dead Rising, partially because I played it during the 360’s honeymoon period. It was a convincing display of what would be possible in the new console generation with its hordes of zombies. However, I had my frustrations with it. Enough that my attempts to return to it years later never went very far. Well, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster addresses almost all of those complaints.

If you haven’t played Dead Rising in the past 18 years, I’m going to remind you that it has a ridiculously dark opening cutscene before the game even starts. After that, it introduces Frank West, and less than an hour later, you might be dropping Servbot heads onto zombies or driving a lawnmower over them. It feels like one of the designers really hated the writer and wanted to undermine them at every turn. As such, Frank West has a character arc where he g??oes from seedy paparazzi to determined hero while also chugging back entire jugs of creamer.

The story involves said seedy paparazzi arriving in Willamette, Colorado, pursuing a s???tory about strange happenings in the town. Upon arriving, he finds it infested with zombies. He clearly exists in a world where zombie movies exist, so either he’s never seen one, or he has terrible eyesight, because he drops onto the roof of a mall for closer inspection.

Despite having no ide??a what the situation is, he asks the helicopter pilot to pick him up in exactly 72 hours. Then, as he watches the helicopter pilot get chased off by the military, he just assumes that the guy will tota??lly be back at the promised time.

Anyway, the mall gets filled?? with zombies, and Frank West searches for answers among the tide of undead. Weird??ly, despite Willamette being a town of over 50,000 people, the answers are located exclusively in the mall.

The mall itself is a sandbox. With rare restri??ctions, you can roam and explore it as much as you want. The whole town has shown up, so it’s packed wall-to-wall with walking ca??rcasses, but with society temporarily suspended, you can help yourself to whatever you want to wield as a weapon.

It’s fun. The freedom the sandbox provides was always the best part. It leaves lots of room to experiment with the many, man?y things you can find. Frank West’s camera providing extra experience points for certain compositions just gives more incentive for screwing around. You will also no doubt learn where all the best stuff is, going back whenever you need more wine to chug.

What got stuck in the craw of many, back in 2006, is the fact that you’re on the clock. Frank West is expe??cting his ride out 72 hours after he arrives, and there is an in-game day/night system constantly ticking. The main story objectives have to be done within a certain time and within a certain window. If you miss them, you’re lining yourself up for the bad endi??ng.

On top of that, people will occasionally materialize. These take the form of survivors and psychopaths. The survivors are hapless people who have taken shelter in the mall. You can, optionally, save them and take them to the security room where everyone is holed up. The psychopaths, you can’t reason with. They’re also optional (for the most part?) and take the form of boss battles. Your ending doesn’t depend on them, but there are bonuses you can get for taking care of them.

What annoyed me most about the original version of Dead Rising wasn’t the time limi??t. In fact, I think the timer is a great mechanic that adds a sense of urgency. No, it was trying to get the survivors to safety that vexed me greatest. Eventually, I just stopped trying to save them at all.

The survivors in Deluxe Remaster are not a ?whole lot brighter, but they’re much better at, well, surviving. I’m not entirely clear on what entirely changed with them. They will still follow you directly into a zombie horde, but they’ve got a Teflon coat on. Zombi??es don’t seem as eager to attack them, and they can easily slip through even tight packs. The result is that saving survivors is actually an enjoyable experience. Instead of avoiding them, I would plan my route through the mall to grab as many as I could to take back to the security room.

Speaking of the security room, the second most annoying problem I found with Dead Rising 2006 was Otis. This is largely because I originally played it on an SDTV where it had the notorious problem of having an unreadably small font for subtitles and Otis did not have a voice-over. He'd call constantly about survivors and mall locations, and I couldn't even read what he was saying. Now, not only can I read the ??subtitles, but Otis talks. He’s no longer a nuisance, but a friend.

Deluxe Remaster is a much better experience ??overall. The big graphical glow-up manages to make things look a lot more modern without losing the overall feel of the original, but the subtle tweaks are what really make it so much more enjoyable.

There are some changes that got highlighted by others that didn’t?? really bother me. The voice actors, for example, have changed. TJ Rotolo was replaced by Jas Patrick as the voice of Frank West, which doesn’t sit well with some. I understand why some fans would be disappointed, but I barely noticed the difference. Likewise, one character was changed from what could be interpreted as an offensive stereotype into something more generic, and another had their lines replaced with something subtler. Personally, I don’t think these are big, upsetting changes, even if I don’t really think they’re necessary. It all depends on where you’re coming from.

One place that I did have an issue was with performance. While playing on the PC version, I found that things ran ve??ry well for the most part, except it would hitch and stutter frequently. Usually, if a camera angle changed, it was accompanied with a visual pause. I’ve read some possible fixes online, but have yet to try them. There’s also a good chance you won’t see these at all, considering that PC environments vary substantially. It wasn’t even a deal-breaker for me, but it was ?intrusive.

For me, the benefits of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s modernization far outweigh the problems. As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I was fondly lukewarm of the original version. Deluxe Remaster makes enough changes that I can say without reservation that I enjoyed?? it. A lot.

When Dead Rising launched in 2006, it was an inventive game. It felt like a game that was informed by the new possibilities afforded to it by the new generation of hardware. But it had a lot of problems that were easier to overlook through the lens of the time period. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster retains the things that made it great while addressing everything th?at held it back. The graphical upgrade just helps it shine brighter.

Zombies are one thing, but when the Spe?cial Forces show up in Dead Rising, it’s a whole ‘nother ball game. It doesn’t matter how well-armed you are; they will shoot back. More frustratingly, they’re armored. So, what is the best way to defeat them?

The Spec Ops soldiers are a heavy presence on the fourth day: Overtime Mode. They arrive at the Willamette Mall and immediately start gunning everything down indiscrimina??tely. On the plus side, they do a lot to thin the hordes of zombies, but t??hey’re also a lot more dangerous. They largely travel in pairs, and they can easily be identified by their flashlights and laser pointers. They’ll also loudly proclaim that they’ve spotted you, so it’s hard not to know when one is nearby.

They’re all armed. Most of them carry automatic assault rifles, while some go as far as packing a rocket launcher. Again, this comes with the advantage that you can take their weapons, which are very effective against zombies. However, they’re armored. It takes quite a number of bullets to take them down, and headshots don’t work against their helmet. It can still be an effective strategy to just unload on them until they dr??op, but not the faster, and it leaves you open to attacks from elsewhere.

How to one-hit kill Spec Ops soldiers in Dead Rising

There is a way to instantly kill Spec Ops soldiers in Dead Rising: Deluxe Remaster, and it isnâ€??™t very hard. It won’t take any uses off of your weapon, and it can be done quickly.

By the fourth day, you should have significantly leveled up Frank. If you’re above level 20, you probably have the “Lift Up�skill, and if you’re above level 26, it’s possible you have “Suplex.�Both of these skills are used similarly, and both will eliminate soldiers with one hit. They’re also performed rather easily. You hold RB and press X next to the soldier on Xbox controllers and R1 and Square on PlayStation. The difference is that Lift Up is done when the soldier is facin?g you, while for Suplex, y??ou need to get behind them. Suplex is a single move, however, whereas Lift up is the action of first picking the soldier up, then another to throw them.

To get close to the soldier, make use of your roll. Keep moving and zigzag while rolling, and you should be able to close the distance rather quickly. Once you’re next to them, the soldier is helpless. If you’re lucky, you can simply walk up behind them and? grab them before they notice you. You don’t even have to be careful about?? it; their situational awareness is not very impressive.

There are other skills that Frank learns, such as Face Crusher and Disembowel that are just as effecti?ve, but you don’t learn them until later on at levels you might not even reach until New Game+.

I was in college in 2006 when Dead Rising came out. HDTVs were already not in the majority of homes, but they were definitely a rarity in dorms. It was ye??ars before I learned what Otis was trying to tell me.

There was a common issue with Dead Rising: the font on subtitles was too small?? to read on SDTVs. You could often make out what was written on screen, but it would take effort. More effort than you c??ould fit into the timeframe it remained visible.

Otis was the worst. He contacts you regularly to tell you the location of survivors and would talk to you as you try to safely navigate past hordes of zombies. Trying to discern the microscopic text while watching your movements was next to impossible. Then, he’d get offended if he was interrupted for any reason. We all hated ??Otis.

But not anymore, because Otis�dialogue is voice acted in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. Too bad my days of playing it on a standard definition ??display are long past.

Dead Rising was an impressive, influential, and ambitious game for 2006, but it was also a flawed one. I l?oved it when it was first released, but I can clearly remember a lot of frustration. Beyond Otis calling my a jer?k for getting interrupted, the controls weren’t great and escorting survivors was also a quick shortcut to going mad.

If you weren’t around, Dead Rising is the?? story of boastful and somewhat sleazy photojournalist Frank West, as he drops into a zombie-infested mall to try and uncover a scoop t?hat will make him famous. Unfortunately, he has to wait three days for his ride back to safety to arrive, and when it comes to finding a story, he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

You’re left to run around a sandbox-ish mall full of zombies. There’s a persistent clock running, counting down 72 in-game hours until you’re saved. There’s ??a central plot that requires you to be in specific places at specific times, but you’re otherwise free to explore, save people in need of help, or take down “psychopaths�who have snapped beneath the weight of zombie-induced stress.

Deluxe Remaster doesn’t really change ??that. Well, a??side from reducing the frustration.

Many of Deluxe Remasters�changes aren’t eve?n immediately noticeable. In fact, if your memory is flawed, or you just didn’t play as much of the 2006 version as I did, you might only notice that it looks nicer. But ?that’s only because Capcom has been sly about what got upgraded in terms of gameplay.

You might think that weapons always had a durabil??ity gauge, but the truth was that you just had to guess. Your katana would doubtlessly let you down by snapping when you needed it most. Now you can tell when it grows brittle. You can also move while looking down the sights of your gun. As I mentioned earlier, Otis can actually talk, so you don’t need to watch the subtitles while you hear about who isn’t looking too good in the cosmetic store in the entrance plaza.

Most importantly, the survivors that you rescue are better at defending themselves and staying out of harm’s way. They aren’t super-capable, so you still need to lead them through safe routes and trim the zombies so they can get through. But they won’t immediately get swarmed the moment you take your eyes off of them, as they often would back in �6. I remember growing so frustrated in the original version that I stopped rescuing people, but it doesn’t look like it will be an issue with the Deluxe Remaster.

I played through the Deluxe Remaster from the beginning to 11 am on the second day; the length that Capcom would let me play through. Much of it felt familiar. The graphics have been glossed up with the RE Engine, but you can tell they’re applied over an older game. Dead Rising was impressive when it was released. The characters had more detailed movement and expressions than what you’d often see in cutscenes at the time, but ther?e’s still some of the telltale stiffness of the earlier days.

Impressively, the new assets and effects work extremely well overtop the dustier parts of the game. The graphical effects and character models still have slightly exaggerated qualities to them that make them feel familiar. The mall is also a nicely sterile consumer environment that incorporates the upgraded lighting and reflection effects well. It avoids looking too much like a fan-made HD mod, and instead seems to understand Dead Rising’s aesthetics.

I’ve heard that some don’t really dig Frank West looking so much older in Deluxe Remaster, but I think it fits the character. He’s covered ??wars, you know.

On the other hand, I did notice a number of graphical weirdities in the PC version I played. I had a lot of issues with the framerate stuttering, though it typically ran fine. More noticeably, the depth-of-field blur wouldn’t mind its own business. Focusing in the camera mode was unreliable. More distractingly, the blur would sometimes cover characters in cutscenes. We’re s??till over a month out from release, which is usually the period of heavy bug squashing, so, with all likelihood, this will be fixed by launch.

With only a day of gameplay under my belt, it’s hard to say if this quality holds up throughout Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s runtime. While I’m happy to see better survivability among the, er, survivors, I’m not certain how they will do in later sprints back to the security room. Likewise, I’ve ?always kind of hated the “Overtime Modeâ€?of the original and want to see how it feels this time around.

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to find out since Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster releases on September 18, 2024. If you’re sa??vvy, you’ll notice that this is the day before the events in the game took place (Se??ptember 19, 2006).

I’m optimistic, to say the least. I’ve been putting off a replay of Dead Rising for quite some time now, and this glossed-up version of the original seems like it will be the ticket. It was never a perfect game, and it’s unlikely that Deluxe Remaster will be, either. However, it doe??s nudge the classic title a notch?? closer to perfection.

Capcom is one of the biggest companies in the gaming world, a position it's pretty much held consistently for several decades now. As such, you'd t??hink it would know what it's talking about when it comes to the industry at large, and it seems a?s though physical games are still very much within the developer's wheelhouse.

According to a Q&A session, as noted in the 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders, Capcom is still keen on providing physical product?s to its customers. A question on page three ask??s whether the increase of digital sales could change the way the company deals with physical games. The answer from Capcom reads:

Given that a ?significant number of end users demand physical games we currently do n?ot expect to eliminate physical products.

Do note the word "currently" in that response. However, it's nice that those who still want the option of having disc versions of Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and the like are being catere??d to, and it's quite surprising to see that demand for physical products is still "significant."

You can't have "stacks" of digital downloads

The increase in digital sales should not be a shock to anyone. The advent of faster internet speeds and the convenience of on-demand content means a lot of gamers prefer the ease of not having to go out and buy a disc. In an actual shop. How archaic!

We are definitely on the way to an entirely digital society, just because there's very little effort in pressing through a few options on-screen and downloading what you want within minutes. In that regard, the idea of procuring physical games from bricks and mortar places may s??eem antiquated to? some.

I can't say where I stand on the matter. I'm somewhat old-school, or at least I thought I was until I subscribed to Xbox Game Pass. With books, I like an even mixture of the two: shelves of actual paperback and hardbacks, but also the benefit of e??-books neatly?? stored on a digital device. I feel the same way about gaming.

Whether Capcom will eventually move away from physical video games in the future remains to be seen. The company has been around for longer than many of us have been alive, and if the Mega Man and Monster Hunter creator says users want physical games, who ??are we to argue? Other than the actual users themselves who can make that decision with our wallets, digital or otherwise.

Recently, Capcom announced it was bringing back the original Dead Rising game in the guise of a deluxe remaster. Since then, the studio has run its summer showcase, where it unveiled a release date of September 19. However, there's one thing ?PC users should know about the title.

According to the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Steam page, the game will be incorporating "3rd-party DRM," in this case the ever-unpopular Denuvo. Fans who are all too familiar with Capcom's wo??rk probably won't be surprised to know this, but it still may come as a disappointment to some.

If you're not aware, Denuvo is essentially anti-piracy software that often gets shipped with a lot of games. However, it's considered controversial and is often to blame for poor performance and framerate issues, particularly on PC. Some games like Back 4 Blood and Doom Eternal have removed DRM, though not until years after release.

Dead Rising vs. Digital Rights Management

That aside, the new remaster of Dead Rising sure does look tasty. Given that the original came out way back in 2006, it's aged quite a bit in terms of its visuals. For the Deluxe Remaster, Capcom is giving the graphics a much-needed boost through its in-house RE Engine, the same development toolkit used for the modern Resident Evil games.

Dead Rising really hit the spot back in the day. It absolutely nailed the? George A Romero-style of zombie apocalypses, tasking players with remaining inside a shopping mall for three days, surrounded by hordes of the undead.

I? can't speak for the fan base regarding the use of Denuvo DRM. I just know two things:

  1. A lot of gamers don't seem to like it.
  2. Publishers and developers have been known to take it out after the fact.

We'll see what happens in this case.

In case you missed it, the first details for the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster were shared during a recent Capcom Next showcase. Not only has?? the game seen quite the graphical overhaul while still retaining the core gameplay fans of the series love, but it's out in just a couple of months on September 19. And if you're willing to pay a bi??t extra, you can get a bunch of fun costumes for protagonist Frank West.

The base game is being sold for $49.99 / £39.99, and pre-orders come with three costumes from throughout the Dead Rising series. The best one is easily the Frank West 2006 costume, making Frank look how he did in the original game, which is perfect for nostalgic players or anyone who isn't thrilled with his updated redesign. The other two are also fun additions; you have a costume based on Chuck Greene, the protagonist of Dead Rising 2, and the costume for the Willamette Parkview Mall Bee mascot. That last one will definitely make every cutscene far sillier. All three also come with additional backg??round music you can play while running ar?ound the mall.

While those costumes are solid choices, it's the Capcom themed costumes that have caught my eye, which are exclusive to the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Digital Deluxe Edition (now that's a mouthful). Capcom is keeping what they look like under wraps but, hilariously, the game's listing on the Xbox store has a full list of names for?? all 17 costumes, as well as the music tracks that come bundled with them. Here is the full list of costumes included with the Digit??al Deluxe Edition:

It's a good line-up, and the thought of Frank running around in a Tron Bonne outfit is very amusing, though I'm surprised there isn't a single Monster Hunter costume given that franchise's popularity. It also doesn't feel as varied as the line-up of Capcom costumes you could unlock in Dead Rising 4. That game had outfits from Devil May Cry, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Viewtiful Joe, and even Ghost Trick. Fortunately, the Digital Deluxe Edition ??isn't that much more expensive than the base ?game, costing $59.99 / £49.99.

Yesterday, out of nowhere, Capcom casually announced it was remastering the original Dead Rising. While certainly exciting, it did confuse me why Capcom decided to drop this via a random Tweet instead of teasing?? it during Summer Game Fest. Turns out it was because it's saving the details for its own Capcom Next showcase.

You won't have to wait long for it either since the showcase is scheduled to take place in less than a week on Monday, July 1. It will air at 3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET / 11 p.m. BST via Capcom's official YouTube channel. Don't go in expecting a surplu??s of brand-new reveals, though, as Capcom has said it'll only run for 25 minutes and be focusing o??n just three titles.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is obviously the main highlight. The teaser trailer offered a brief glimpse at the overhauled graphics and Frank West's updated design, but Capcom Next should provide some actual gameplay and hopefully a release window. A 2024 launch would be a nice surprise, though I could see it ??b??eing saved for 2025 instead.

Capcom will also have updates on Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, its Japanese folklore themed action-strategy game. It's set to launch in a few weeks on July 19, so it makes sense for Capcom to give this some focus. I'm definitely curious to see how this ??will end up performing since it's a new IP from the company.

The only other game to get any attention will be Resident Evil 7, which is coming to iPhone, iPad, and Mac the day after the showcase on July 2. Ideally, Capcom won't dedicate too much time to this one since it's a port of a seven-year old game. I doubt anyone will be tuning in specifically for news on this over the Dead Rising remaster, especially considering the recent report on how other Resident Evil mobile ports are performing (spoilers: they're doing badly).

Just when you thought the season of big game reveals was over, Capcom has thrown one massive curveball by confirming a remaster of the original Dead Rising is in development. And it announc?ed this via a random Twitter post.

Like some kind of social media zombie, the official Dead Rising Twitter account spurred back to life earlier today, posting a short teaser clip of the remaster, officially titled Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The clip doesn't show much, only featuring journalist protagonist Frank West jump out of a helicopter above the Willamette shopping mall, the iconic setting of the first game. This is the first post the account has made since 2018, not counting a 2019 retweet of Xbox Game Pass advertising the addition of Dead Rising 4 to the service.

This won't be the first time Capcom has re-released the original Dead Rising. There was an HD remaster in 2016, but if the visuals seen in the teaser are anything to go by, it looks like this Deluxe Remaster is giving the game a graphical overhaul. While details on the project are incredibly slim, this news is sure to excite fans of the series regardless. It's been nearly six years since Dead Rising 4, with the series pretty much going dormant afterwards. A Game History Secrets report from 2020 claimed that a Dead Rising 5 was in the works at one point at se??ries developer Capcom Vancouver, but it was scrapped when the? studio shut down.

I'm frankly baffled this wasn't even mentioned during Summer Game Fest. While Dead Rising certainly isn't as big as Monster Hunter, this teaser dropping during the showcase would definitely have elicited some cheers from the crowd. Aside from letting long-time fans re-experience the game, this remaster should ideally addre??ss issues in the original, and introduce it to a whole new audience. Hopefully, we won't have to wait much longer for further info, with Capcom only saying it's coming soon.

I'll never forget the maintenance tunnel route

Just a quick Friday afternoon reminder before the weekend gets here: you can now grab Dead Rising and Breakdown for free on Xbox through Games with?? Gold. The promo just popped up today.

Most of us have played Dead Rising before, and many of us adore the original in ways that the later entries – not even Dead Rising 2 – could completely top, but maybe you don't have the 2016 edition. There's something about the intricate mall shelves that I hold near and dear even in the modern era.?? I used to stress out about the time limit and missable story beats, but I've learned to app?reciate them.

As for Breakdown, I mostly know it for the weirdly iconic "glowing red fist" box?? art. Having never played Namco's first-person action game on the origi?nal Xbox, I'm expecting to feel bewildered.

Consolidated results projection remains intact

[Update: Sadly, it looks like it's worse for the studio than thought, as game designer Aidan Scanlan has tweeted that Capcom Vancouver has closed its doors for good. GameDaily.biz also received word, from an unnamed Capcom source, tha??t the developer plans to focus all maj??or game development from its expanding Japanese studios going forward.]

Industry giant Capcom has announced the termination of all projects currently underway at Capcom Vancouver - the division responsible for titles such as Dead Rising and Puzzle Fighter - in a move that is set to record huge losses f?or the Japanese developer/publisher.

In an official press statement, Capcom stated that "as a result of reviewing ti??tles in development at Capcom Game Studio Vancouver, Inc., Capcom now expects to record losses from the termination of development projects of approximately 4.5 billion yen". To save you the trouble of digging out the currency converter, that's in the region of some 40 million USD.

Despite this, the statement goes on to clarify that Capcom do not expect this to change their forecast for the year. The statement specifically namechecks adventure title Monster Hunter: World - and its record-breaking performance on both console and PC - as an anchor that will offset this in??credible financial loss.

Essentially, Monster Hunter: World has performed so well for the publisher, that a loss of 4.5 billion yen will apparently not affect any of Capcom's projections for the rest of the financial year. You can read the full statement at the official Capcom Investor Relations site.

Took them long enough

Alan Wake fans rejoice! Earlier today, it was announced that Alan Wake is going to be adapted into a television series with Sam Lake, the original creator heavily involved in the production of the live-action series as its executive producer. Peter Calloway (Cloak & Dagger, Legion) will be the showrunner of the series, while Remedy Entertainment and Contradiction Films will be involved in the production o?f the series. Lake is currently working on a pitch and will be shopping it to various networks?? in October, so we may not have to wait long before we hear more news about the series. 

Alan Wake earned a massive cult following when it originally launched in May of 2010 and fans have been clamoring for a sequel ever seen. They got a spin-off in American Nightmare, but that was about it. There were plans to make a sequel to the game, but those quickly fell through. And before anyone asks about what the TV show will be about, it's planning on adapting the entire game, but if the show proves to be a hit, Lake is adamant about using his script for Alan Wake 2 for future seasons. 

The message is pretty clear. If you want Alan Wake 2, watch the show, if and when it airs. The only aspect about this that concerns me is the production company, Contradiction Films. They haven't done that much besides Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the two Dead Rising movies, which I had never heard about until writing this because they were on Crackle. Is Crackle even still a thing? Regardless, most of their output seems pretty mundane, but hopefully they can do justice to Alan Wake and Sam Lake's precious baby.

This might mean a big direction change for the next Dead Rising

A significant number of employees have been laid off from Capcom Vancouver today. Capcom confirmed the news to us shortly after Kotaku first reported it.

In a statement to Destructoid, a Capcom representative said "Capcom Vancouver has undergone a restructure which has impacted? approximately 30 percent of the studio, as part of its regular periodic assessment of upcoming projects and overall studio goals. The team is continuing to work hard to support the recent release of Puzzle Fighter for?? mobile and is dedicated to its flagship&n??bsp;Dead Rising series."

The Kotaku story estimates that 50 employees were let go, and LinkedIn puts the studio size at 250 people. The "ap??proximately ??30 percent" figure seems to be more or less in line with a 50-person estimate.

Although Capcom officially says it's a restructure as a result of a "regular periodic assessment," Kotaku's sources have more specific information. It seems that Capcom wants to "cut scope" on the next Dead Rising title, presumably to make it smaller and more focused. It's a plausible shift after Dead Rising 4 mostly failed to gain much traction.

As always, o??ur best wishes go out to the former Capcom Vancouver employees who were affected by today's lay??offs.

Returning to the West

Dead Rising was one of my favorite franchises to debut during the last console generation, and the one launch game I thought best made the case for upgrading to an HD system. The game's main draw, having to??ns of interactive zombies on screen at once, was something that simply couldn't be done on earlier hardware. The extra power allowed nearly everything in the game to be used as a weapon, and most items worked just about as well as you'd expect their real-world counterparts to. What's more, although the cutscenes and story took themselves completely seriously the player never had to, making for some amazing comedy moments.

I think the secret of the game's success has to do with never telling the player "no." Want to eat a rotten hamburger you found in the trash, or mix shrimp with ice cream in a blender? Feel free, but you're going to regret it soon. Want to throw marbles on the ground instead of hitting ??zombies with a baseball bat? You can do it, but it won't be as useful as introducing them to the business end of a Willamette Slugger. On the other hand, deciding to fight a boss while wearing a sassy sundress or trying to take one out with a mannequin torso could end up being surprisingly effective.

With Dead Rising 4, Capcom brings the creative zombie killing simulator back where it all started, returning to the series' original protagonist and setting. Fortunately, the title has also added a lot of features the series has picked up along the way. Since Microsoft's exclusivity deal just expired Dead Rising 4 is heading to the PS4, and Frank's Big Package includes all the DLC released for the Xbox One and PC ve??rsions, plus a new mode based on iconic Capcom characters.

If you haven't seen our review of Dead Rising 4 it's still worth reading, and everything Chris wrote there still applies. It's disappointing not to hear T.J. Rotolo as Frank, and as a longt?ime fan of the series I feel removing the time limit makes the game a little too easy. I'm also not thrilled that combo weapons can't be crafted at all until after you've tracked down the blueprint. Still, it's a hell of a lot of fun plowing through hundreds of zombies using a literal snowplow, and the Christmas setting fits the game's parody of capitalism perfectly. 

The story's set sixteen years after the outbreak that took place in the first Dead Rising, and the town of Willamette Colorado has been rebuilt, complete with a brand new mall smack in the center of town. Survivors of the first outbreak have been wary of a repeat occurrence, so some of them are a little better prepared for the undead. There's a series of tunnels running through the town connecting various safe rooms together, and Frank's learned a few new tricks since his last outing. His time working with Chuck Greene in Dead Rising 2 taught him how to combine items to create combo weapons. Somewhere along the way, he also picked up Nick's ability to merge vehicles into cars that wouldn't look out of place in a Mad Max game.

Frank's camera returns to the series, and it's been upgraded with a night vision filter and a scanning mode, perfect for finding hidden collectables or secret caches. New to t??he series are hidden panic rooms, and if you see the White Rook shield logo next to someone's door, it's usually worth your while to inspect the building extra thoroughly. Another new feature lets Frank equip temporary "Exo-suits" that boost his power immensely, but break down after a couple of minutes use.

Frank's Big Package (tee hee) includes all previous season pass DLC released for Dead Rising 4. This includes the option to turn all zombies into elves or give them heart-eyed servbot heads, and also includes some extra costume options for Frank. All of the pre-order bonuses are included, though they can't be crafted, so you'll have to buy them from a vendor or find them in the world. The mini-golf DLC and Frank Rising post-story single-player ??content are also unlocked from the very beginning, though the game advises playing through the story mode before tackling Frank Rising. Hard and "Blackest Friday" difficulty modes are included as part ?of the Frank Rising add-on, as is the option to turn on a time limit, but only for this mode. The PS4 version also adds the ability to move the map by using the touchpad, an inconsequential update if ever there was one.

New to all versions of Dead Rising 4 is something called Capcom Heroes mode. It's exactly the type of gloriously stupid DLC you'd expect from this franchise. Previous Dead Rising titles have always included some well-hidden outfits with special powers, but Capcom Heroes puts them front and center. In this mode, Frank can find special Capcom-themed costumes and equip them to gain that hero's abilities and moves for a little while, changing his outfit at any time by visiting special arcade machines. He can complete bonus challenges to unlock each costume?'s ultimate ability as well as a palette-swapped shadow version of each outfit. 

Capcom Heroes follows the same beats as the main story mode, though Frank can't manage his weapon inventory or craft combo weapons. As such, he's heavily reliant on the powers granted by his costumes to make his way through the horde. You'll probably find a few costumes far more useful than others; Devil May Cry's Dante seeme?d seriously overpowered, while Cammy's melee focus?? left her more vulnerable to being grappled by the undead. (As a side note, to the person who lovingly rendered Frank's ass in Cammy's battle thong? I'd like to speak with you after class.)

Arcade machines are plentiful, so even though each costume has a four-minute time limit, you're rarely far from a refresh. It was great to see some lesser-known Capcom characters get some time in the spotlight, and trying out the various movesets and powers brought back pleasant memories of Street Fighter II, Okami, and Mega Man and Bass. This mode is probably the best way to play through Dead Rising 4 casually, and it's lot??s of fun even if it sucks all challenge whatsoever out ?of the story mode.


Had to share this one with Nic.

I ran into a few minor errors, mostly inconsequential stuff like zombies clipping through hedges or bodies getting stuck in the walls or ceiling af??ter an explosion went off. It sort of added to the grindhouse nature of the game, so I didn't mind rolling with it. I didn't notice any major glitches, though there was a bit of slowdown when lots of explosions were going off at once in the middle of a massive horde. The final cutscenes had some audio issues, and I missed a little bit of what was going on since the subtitles cut out at the same time the sound did.

Dead Rising 4 did feel like it might have had less of a budget than Dead Rising 3, and I noticed the town's radio stations only seem to play public domain songs. Opening a pause menu and hearing a jazzy Christmas carol helps set th??e mood better than any licensed tracks would have, so it's hard to complain that Willamette's country station only plays covers of&nb??sp;"Oh, Susanna" and "Old Dan Tucker."

Dead Rising 4 wasn't as satisfying as my favorite game in the series, Dead Rising 2, but it's still a big load of dumb fun, and perfectly appropriate for the holiday season. Frank's Big Package offers a lot of content for the price, and if you've enjoyed any previous games? in the series, you'll probably have fun with this one. Just be aware it's a shallower experience than you may be expecting, especially if you star??t with Capcom Heroes.

Playable in Capcom Heroes mode on December 5

This latest batch of outfit reveals for Capcom Heroes mode in Dead Rising 4 is a doozy.

It warms my heart to see any acknowledgment that Viewtiful Joe a) existed and b) is worth celebrating but, beyond that, I'm also pleased to find that Arthur's exaggerated running animation is straight out of Ghosts 'n Goblins. There's also Amaterasu, Jill Valentine, Morrigan and her excellent bangs, and the big-eyed Bass. That's all in addition to previous costumes like Mecha-Zangief and Sissel.

In short, this dress-up-and-kill mode seems pretty dang g??ood -- especially since it'll be free.

Capcom Heroes launches for Dead Rising 4 on December 5, which is the same day Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package releases for PlayStation 4. If you end up pre-ordering the latter (in North America, "at participating retailers") you'll score a free copy of the original Dead Rising for PS4.

Here's a little more on Capcom Heroes, a free new mode in the works for Dead Rising 4 that'll let you don special costumes based on characters from other Capcom series. Last time, I was stoked to see Sissel from Ghost Trick. This time I'm all about that me?tallic wonder Mecha-Zangief.

Other costumes include Cammy, Akuma, M. Bison, and Ryu -- specifically Hot Ryu. Capcom knows.

Capcom Heroes is targeting a December 5, 2017 launch. It'll be a free update on PC and Xbox One, otherwise, if you're picking up the PS4 edition releasing that same day, the?? mode will be included.

Capcom Heroes

Sometimes, all it takes is an image. "That's it. I'm writing this up. Folks need to see." This screenshot of Frank West pulling off his best Sissel-from-Ghost Trick impression is one such example.

What's going on here? The Dead Rising series is no stranger to cameo outfits from other Capcom series and Dead Rising 4 is up next with a full-fledged mode, Capcom Heroes, an alternate take on the game's story. Once it releases for free on December 5, you'll be able to wear over a dozen referential outfits based on the likes of Cammy, X, ??Dante, and more, and wield new special attacks.

"While progressing through missions and exploring the world, players will discover arcade machines," explains Capcom. "Interacting with these arcade cabinets lets the player equip a new 'Hero Outfit' that gives Frank the powers and abilities of that character. In addition to using the arcade machines, Frank can purchase some outfits from vendors and unlock others by finding collectibles hidden throughout the world. Players will also want to look for 'Hero Training' side?? missions which award outfit variants and upgrades."

This doesn't magically fix Dead Rising 4, but I appreciate the absurdity of it all and am happy to see that it's a) free and b) not exclusive, timed or otherwise, to the upcoming PS4 port.

Capcom is fixing up former Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 4 with an update of fan-requested changes timed to coincide with the release of the definitive Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package for PS4.

AI tweaks, new enemies, and new side-quests pair with an all-around tuneup to bring the Xbox One version -- which was a flop, sales-wise, for Capcom despite only reviewing slightly worse than Dead Rising 3 on average -- up to parity with the PS4 release, which Capcom is assuredly hoping gets off on a better foot and makes up for its predecessor's tanked sales. Just Capcom being Capcom

In a surprise announcement, Capcom has announced that the latest entry in the Dead Rising franchise will be making its way to the PlayStation 4 on December 5. Titled Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package, the new release will effectively become the definitive version of the game to buy. All previously released DLC will be included, along with exclusive ??new content.

The new mode is called Capcom Heroes, and is described as a new way to experience the story. Frank will be able to wear over a dozen outfits, which include outfits based on Megaman X and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. Each c?ostume will have special attacks, which could potentially make a double dip worthwhile.

It's surprising that Capcom is porting Dead Rising 4 to the PlayStation 4 so soon. The console hasn't even gotten Dead Rising 3 yet, which our own Chris Carter spoke very highly of with a 9/10. However, he was not as kind to Dead Rising 4, giving it a 7.5/10, and it would appear consumers weren't either. When Capcom released its latest sales figures this July, no figures for Dead Rising 4 ??were gi??ven, meaning it likely did not break the million unit mark.

I can't see myself getting this, as I've often heard fans say it's inferior to the other ones available on PlayStation 4. Eve??ry change I heard about it, such as the re?moval of the iconic timer system, seemed to suggest that as well. I feel bad for those that supported it on Xbox One and PC though, as they effectively bought an inferior version now.

Console ports pls

Capcom announced they're bringing back Puzzle Fighter for iOS and Android. The sequel title will feature the classic puzzle gameplay we remember, but with some new twists like two assist characters. You'll be able to use chibi versions of Street Fighter's Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li, Darkstalkers' Morrigan, Resident Evil's Jill, Mega Man X, Devil May Cry's Dante, and Dead Rising's Frank West and Chuck Greene. 

There's not much footage beyond this very brief cinematic, but I'm very excited about this. It's one step away from the truly special series, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (Pocket Fighter in Japan) and I?? can't wait to use chibis again. I'm normally not someone who clamors for specific consoles, but I'd definitely see this going over successfully on Nintendo Switch. 

Regardless, Puzzle Fighter will launch on mobile devices sometime later this year.??

Up to 126 now

Although Xbox Game Pass is a relatively new service (only two months old at this point), it has already fallen into a comfortable cadence. Much like its Games with Gold kin, we get ?an announcement toward the end of the month about the program's plans for when the calendar flips.

August is doing its best impression of July, at least with regard to quantity. Just like last month, Xbox Game Pass will add seven more titles for August. They are: Dead Rising 3, Dirt Rally, Limbo, Metal Slug XX, Pharaonic, So Many Me, and Ultraton. Of those, Dead Rising 3 is probably the standout, especially considering most folks have already played Limbo by now. Don't sleep on So Many Me, though.

Microsoft is in the fortuitous position of only growing Xbox Game Pass right now, so the service will only get bigger in the coming months. By my count, this latest round brings the tally up to 126 games. Not until November will any games disappear from the library. (And, when that happens, Microsoft told us that subscribers will get a heads-up a few weeks in advance.?) There's time to savor the additions without worrying about finishing something that's soo??n getting pulled.

Pay to slay

The theme for the next Humble Bundle is publisher-oriented before, and that's something that we've seen time and time again. However, the sub-theme narrows the scope (mostly) down to two prominent franchises that a lot of people have a lot of love for: Resident Evil and Dead Rising.

The first tier isn't super indicative of that trend. Anyone who pays $1 or gets Steam keys for Strider, Umbrella Corps, and DmC: Devil May Cry. There's only one title there that fits the trend and it's the unfortunate Umbrella Corps. That is said to be a not-very-good game.

It's in the next level that things start to cohere. Those who pay more than the average ($6.35 at time of writing) will get Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil HD Remaster, Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster, and the Umbrella Corps Deluxe Edition Upgrade Pack.

The last (but still considerably cheap) tier is all about Dead Rising. Paying more than $12 nets Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition. Because the most recent games in these two series are noticeably missing, contributing more than the average also comes with coupons for 40 percent off Resident Evil 7 and 50 percent off Dead Rising 4. Whichever you decide to buy into, know that there ??will be ample zombie killing in your near future.

$10 DLC on Xbox One and PC

If you never bothered to look into Dead Rising 4's season pass, I'm right there with you.

As a result, we both missed hearing about Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf, one of the included add-ons. It's up-to-four-player co-op mini golf on an 18-hole course with oversized golf balls, customizable clubs, and zombies roaming arou??nd. Does that premise sound decent? I think so.

The DLC releases June 20, 2017 for Xbox One, Steam, and Windows 10. Mini Golf costs $10 on its own, or you can get it in the $20 season pass, or you can go all in for the $80 Dead Rising 4 Digital Deluxe Edition. The last option -- paying full? p?rice so long after release -- is probably best avoided.

This might seem odd from the outside looking in, but it isn't -- at least not relatively speaking. Look no further than Dead Rising 3's reference-filled Super Ultra Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX + α DLC.

Also, the mere mention of mini golf reminds me that I'm unable to play Golf Story or Everybody's Golf, and that's bumming me out. I'm in a very particular video game golf mood al??l of a sudden.

Top titles fail to reach projected numbers

Dead Rising 4 failed to make even half of what Capcom was hoping for. Having projected two million sales in the 2016 fiscal year, the lumbering husk of a once-great series didn't reach one million. Poor performance of the Xbox One outside the U.S. and middling reception are possible causes. Monster Hunter Stories also "underperformed."

Resident Evil 7 (3.5 million sold) and Monster Hunter XX (1.7 million) also failed to attain their projected numbers (four million and two million, respectively), but they performed well enough to satisfy Capcom, perhaps due to the lower budgets they required. Re-releases of older Resident Evil games "performed steadily thanks to a stable fanbase," with Resident Evil 6 surpassing one million on the year.

When hell is full, the dead will walk the Earth

Call me a hypocrite, but I think the trailer for Dead Rising 4: Frank Rising looks decent. The main game did basically nothing positive to change the Dead Rising formula, but playing as a zombie is something that was never even tackled. I don't think Zombie Frank will be using much in the way of weapo??ns, but this looks to be a lot more interesting than just the same crap all over again.

Apparently this is already available (for $9.99 separately or $19.99 in the season pass). Even though Capcom promoted this a little, ?the rel?ease seems awfully sudden. Maybe they are trying to surprise gamers into buying the DLC without much reception?

POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING

I wonder if Frank Rising will end up being the canonical ending to Dead Rising 4. The game abruptly ends with Frank sacrificing himself to let the new journalist character escape with all of the information about Willamette. Since this DLC is about Frank finding a permanent cure to his new affliction, maybe Capcom is planning to have this work as the "true" ending. If so, it's pretty typical of them to sell it months after the game came out.

Frank Rising

Poor Frank West dese??rves better than this. He's a hero, having saved countless people from a zombie outbreak. He's a pioneer, the kind that seek out danger in order to get a scoop. And, as everyone seems to remember mo??st, he's covered wars.

Still, you play with fire long enough and you're bound to get burned. Or, if you play with zombies long enough, you're bound to get bit. That's the timeline the upcoming Dead Rising 4 DLC explores.

On April 4, a single-player add-on called Frank Rising will release on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC for $10. In it, Frank is infected by the undead and ?he needs to find a permanent cure. The twist is bolstered by the fact that Frank needs to feast on humans instead of traditional food in order to stay alive. Well, I guess humans are traditional zombie food.

Good on Frank for seein?g how the other half lives. Understanding all perspectives is an importa??nt part of being a journalist, and now he'll have the empathetic experience to objectively cover the zombies. Frank West: Good Journalist.

Paint the snow red

Something about Dead Rising 4 is dead and it's not all the zombies (because they are actually undead, post-alive). It's Microsoft's ti??med-exclusivity. Capcom Vancouver's slapstick, Christmas-themed zombie survival game has broken free of its shackles after just three months.

Dead Rising 4 is now available on Steam for PC players. Up until now, Windows 10 was the only option for playing on PC. Xbox One remains the sole console that Dead Rising 4 is available on. Mic?rosoft has confirmed in the past that there's a one-year console exclusivity deal in place, so we'll have to wait significantly longer to know if there's an eventual PS4 port planned.

As for how this version performs, that's probably still up in the air but initial reports are reassuring. According to early Steam reviews (and this i??s entirely anecdotal), more people are saying it runs g?reat than are having troubles with it. If that holds up, it's quite the Christmas gift in March.

Don't wake daddy

I'll always appreciate Dead Rising 2: Case Zero for renewing my interest in the series and getting me to go back and spend more time with the original Dead Rising, a game I wanted to love but just wasn't fully clicking with. The standalone lead-in game is nice and digestible, and alongside Dead Rising 2: Case West, it is now pl??ayable on Xbox One t??hrough the backward compatibility program.

I somehow didn't play Case West (or maybe I did and I've gone full amnesiac), but it's another standalone adventure that has Chuck Greene and Frank West teaming up in a Phenotrans facility near Fortune City following the events of Dead Rising 2. Let's hope more games in the serie??s join?? the list.

And because this wouldn't be a backward compatibility news story without a random title or two slipping in as well, Meet the Robinsons and Cars 2: The Video Game are also playable on Xbox One.
