Tablets are one of those "one-does-all" pieces of technology that The Jetsons writers dreamt of in the 1960s. The?se screened squares have been around since the 1980s, but they've so advanced far past their ancient progenitor that it's hard to tell they're part of the same technological evolutionary family.

These days, finding something a tablet can't do is a genuine challenge. Many people I know look at tablets and see more accessible versions of their smartphones; they use them to place calls, send emails, and play their favorite mobile games. Some of my closest friends prefer to use them as digital artists' easels, and I've seen proof of how well their favorite tool works for them at local art ??shows. It's hard to keep up with all the awesome new releases in games, but sometimes, you just gotta throw it all to the wind and play an old favorite. If you're a fan of the Tomb Raider reboot series, and you're looking for a gritty adventure game to sink your teeth into, you're in luck, because Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the free game on the Epic Games Store for September.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was originally released back in 2018 as the third game in the reboot trilogy and the twelfth mainline Tomb Raider game. The game's events take place a year after the events of its predecessor, Rise of the Tomb Raider, which came out in 2015, and finds Lara Croft racing against the clock ?to prevent ?the world from ending yet again. Arguably the darkest game in the series yet, it explores themes of descension, both through Lara's personality and the jungle itself.

The story is based on both Mayan and Aztec mythol?ogies, and in creating the game, Square Enix devs consulted with historians to create the architecture and people of the legendary city Paititi. Fun fact: the game is still sitting at number seven on the list? of most expensive games ever made, after adjusting for inflation.

Submerged: Hidden Depths is the other free-to-download title paired with Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Epic Games Store. It's a relaxing exploration sim that has players uncovering the ruins of a beautiful, sunken world. If you want a more chill exploration-based gaming experience, it sounds like it's thematically fairly close to the Tomb Raider series, so it could be a fun one to try out.

The games are available for free download on the Epic Games Store starting September 1, so make sure to grab the roguelike "card crawler" Ring of Pain before it leaves the rotation next week.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! is this week's free PC game on the Epic Games Store. If you like ??the idea of a cooking simulator you can play alone or with a partner, this one's wild �?it's set on a roving food truck in the "radically-changed war-torn Ameri?ca of 2042."

After years of not quite breaking into the Cook, Serve, Delicious! series, I recently gave the second game another try and had a much better time handling food orders with a co-op partner on the same couch. So much so, I also picked up the third game on sale, and am now looking forward to the next title from Vertigo Gaming, Cook Serve Forever.

Unlike Overcooked, this game isn't about moving around stage hazards, and you'll have far more contro??l over?? the types of food you'll serve on any given day. Instead of rushing around, you'll sit still and use a bunch of different control inputs to successfully assemble meals �?bit by bit, as fast as possible �?exactly as the customers specify.

It's overwhelming and stressful. But as you get familiar with the controls, there's consistent logic and mu??scle memory to keep those orders flowing; you'll be able to build burgers or fry up some chicken with ease. At a certain point, I can kind of stop thinking and just let my fingers do the work. It's one of those try-to-reach-zen games.

That said, as one Steam reviewer put it, "I thought this was a cooking game not a stress management g??ame." There's a reason I bounced off the series at first.

In some ways, I prefer its calmer, less zany predecessor, but Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! can absolutely be your first CSD game. The day-to??-day format has improved over tim??e.

Are you in a party, co-op, or head-to-head mood?

Some of my fondest Nintendo Switch memories were formed with multiplayer (and especially co-op) games, and if you're looking for a group activity, the Nintendo Multiplayer Sale is worth a run-through. There are about 50 discounted games on the eShop, as well as some DLC, and the deals will stick around through August 7.

You can see the full ??list of?? featured games over here, and I've got ??recommendations. That said, this is a digital Nintendo sale �?the games are often great, but?? rarely cheap.

• Borderlands: The Handsome Collection ($15.99) runs fine on Nintendo Switch.
• Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics ($27.99) is a good bang for your buck if you enjoy board and card games �?and the AI puts up a fight in solo play.
• Diablo II: Resurrected ($23.99) is here if you want to rekindle things.
• Good Job! ($13.99) is a nice, casual pickup. It's stick-figure chaos.
• LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga ($44.99) has something for everyone, especially completionists, as it spans nine films.

• Star Wars Episode I Racer ($7.49) is more than just memes.

And it's also worth noting that Mario Party Superstars is the good one on Switch �?instead, this sale features Super Mario Party ($41.99), which originally came out in 2018 and left some of us feeling empty. For what it's worth, I did enjoy the hyper-realistic meat-sizzling mini-game. I'd play a whole dang cooking game in that vein. C'mon, Nint?endo!

Although I wouldn't recommend it at this arguably still-too-high price, if you're curious about Go Vacation ($34.99), it's an island activity game that's good for a few laughs. Repetition can and will si?nk in, though. Kids might have a better time with it.

Finally, I'll always prefer the "everyone's here" appeal of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition ($41.99), but Age of Calamity ($41.99) and the Expansion Pass ($13.99) might show up at the right place and time for you (especially if you're skipping the recent Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes). I? could chip away at these Advent??ure maps for the rest of my life.

Get in, play for a month, get out

While EA Play isn't something I would subscribe to year-round, it can be useful in small, strategic doses. And right now, there's a deal for new subscribers �?you can get a month of?? EA Play for $0.99 on PC or PlayStation, which includes access to the Play List library.

It's honestly worth checking the lineup to see if anything stands out.

No shade, but it's not all sports �?there's Lost in Random, It Takes Two, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Unravel Two, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, to name a few highlights. I'm sure plenty of people do subscribe just for the annual series, though. Nothing wrong with that if the timing works out. I've definitely played? games with EA Play that I don't care at all about owning.

It Takes Two caught on in a huge way �?people like forming feel-good co-op memories with their close ones, who knew? �?but don't forget about Lost in Random. It's a fairy-tale adventure game with an unforgettable Tim Burton/Henry ?Selick-inspired world.

Beyond full games, EA Play also has 10-hour trials for titles like F1 22 and GRID Legends.

The deal expires August 4

The $0.99 deal is in effect for EA Play on PS4, PS5, Steam, and Origin; it expires on August 4, and again, it's geared toward new subscribers. You can ?use this site to sign up for your preferred platfo?rm, but remember to turn off?? auto-renewal before your month is up.

For reference, EA ?Play is normally $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

Also worth reiterating: if you're subscribed to ??Xbox game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, you've already got EA Play baked into your membership. The lines are blurred these days.

A lot of repeats, but there are some new deals

We're well into summer, and that means scorching days, soothing Seals & Crofts, and lots of gaming deals. The PlayStation Store Summer Sale started today with over a thousand deals on PS4 and PS5 games lasting through Wednesday, August 3 at 11:59?? p.m. Pacific.

The bulk of the sale is going to be older stuff, naturally �?but a few newer releases stand out in the crowd. Supermassive Games' cinematic horror romp The Quarry, Sloclap's tense martial arts brawler Sifu, Saber Interactive's team-based Evil Dead: The Game, and Team Ninja's super eclectic Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin are worth a nod.

A nice day to expand that storage

Games keep getting larger, and so our storage needs expand. Thankfully, there are some deals on microSD cards during Prime Day today that make bumping up the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch storage capacity a little easier on the ??wallet.

Today is Amazon's annual Prime Day sale, where it cuts prices across the storefront. While lightning-fast, short-time-only deals are going on as well, there are some pretty decent cuts o??n microSD cards. These discounts make upgrading to a 256 or 512 GB pretty reasonable, ?and hey, that's a lot of indies, backlog games, and anything else you might stick on a Steam Deck.

When looking at microSD cards for game devices, you want to make sure it has a good rating and read speed. For those who haven't dealt with this before, that just means having a card that will let the device read the info on it faster. Games have a lot of dat?a they deal with, and so read speed is going to cause fewer loading hiccups.

Additionally, 512 GB is—at least for me—the sweet spot for Steam Deck. It's a ton of storage without going completely overboard on the terabyte storage, and can hold a hefty amount of games. I ??prefer one card, rather than having to swap out a ton.

Switch microSD deals

The highlights of today's Prime Day deals vary, depending on what you're looking for. Nintendo Switch owners can pick up a Nintendo-themed 512 GB SanDisk microSDXC card for $69.34, down from $130. Not only is this a pretty big discount, but it's a big storage expansion and a good card. The price bump seems largely du?e to the Nintendo branding, but this at least brings it down to a more reasonable point, if you want some Nintendo theming on your storage.

A slightly more budget-friendly option is the 512GB SanDisk with no Nintendo theming. That comes in at $46.99, down from $57.99; not a huge price slash, but you're getting a better price point. SanDisk is what I use for my own Switch, and I've had a good experience with it. If you want to save a bit more, you can also bump down to the 256 GB SanDisk Extreme, which runs $35.99. Or go incredibly overboard with a 1 TB card at $151.99, which is actually a pretty alright discount f??rom its usual $249.99.

Steam Deck microSD deals

If you are looking to bump up that Steam Deck storage space, however, you'll want to eye the Samsung line of cards. The 256 GB Pro Plus is down to $27.99 from $54.99, whic??h would make for a good card to fill up with smaller file size games or any other game files that might be smaller in size. You know, if you're into that sort of thing.

Larger capacities don't get the same deep discount, as the 512 GB Evo Select is only marked down to $54.99 from $65.58. Cost-savers won't see as much savings here, but one 512 GB card will still run you l?ess than two 256 GB cards.

Deals are popping up throughout the day on gamepads, drives, and actual games themselves too. As always, I recommend following Wario64 on Twitter to keep track of them. And if you have Prime, be sure to nab that free copy of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition today too.

Amazon Prime Day deals are in effect

If you recently got a PlayStation 5, you're *probably* not looking to spend another cent on hardware anytime soon. But if you've had enough breathing room, today's a good day to pick up a DualSense controller or a PS5-compatible SSD with Amazon Prime Day deals.

On the controller front, Amazon has marked DualSense gamepads down to $59 for?? Prime Day, including newer variations like Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Nova Pink, and Starlight Blue. Or if you'd rather stick with a more "classic" look, the white and black controllers are also on sale �?but you aren't saving quite as much, comparatively speaking. Those models usually cost $70, while the fancier Dual?Sense colorways go for $75.

A few months ago, I sprung for the Starlight Blue DualSense �?it looks nice in person! Spending a lot of money on secondary controllers is never fun, especially when we've got longevity concerns,? so I always try to wait for deals to pop up. This is as good as it gets.

Storage is another look-for-deals concern for PS5 owners in that there's just not enough to go around unless you upgrade. Amazon has discounts on numerous PS5-compatible M.2 SSDs for Prime Day, and one impulse-buy-worthy deal I've seen is this 1TB SSD from Nextorage for $110. Another one: the WD_Black SN850, which is $114 for 1TB.

Of course, if you wan??t to go big, there are 2TB SSDs for PlayStation 5 as well �?but expect to pay over $200. When shopping aro?und, don't forget the heatsink!

I haven't made the SSD expansion jump yet, so I can't personally vouch for either of these, but I am getting dangerously close with PlayStation Plus Premium's game catalog crowding my PS5. Prime members get a ticket to fight the Reapers

Amazon's Prime Day is coming up, where it offers a bunch of deals specifically for its subscribing members. On the games side of things, that includes a few freebies. And this year the lineup is pretty good, as Prime members can get a copy of Mass Effect Legendary Edition and some Star Wars games for the low, low price of free.

In an Amazon blog, the company reveals some of the games arriving as freebies for Prime Day. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a big one, as that's all three Mass Effect games and their single-player DLC, packing the whole trilogy into one launcher. If that gets you eager for space action, there's also a few Star Wars games on offer too: Star Wars Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy, Jedi Outcast, and Republic Commando. Or, for gearheads, there's Need for Speed Heat and GRID Legends.

Amazon says that during Prime Day on July 12-13, members will be able to claim over 30 free games. Amazon Prime Gaming July is led by th?e Prime Day main event, but the company just announced a few extras on the way this month.

Here are the big guns in terms of the free Amazon Prime Gaming July titles:

Beyond that, there's a few other extras (read: not full games but bonuses for existing ones you own, or other free-to-play titles), including stuff for Pokemon Go and Elder Scrolls Online. Continuing their partnership with Blizzard, Amazon Prime Gaming added the "Jewel of the Firelord" transmog item, which is out now. As a reminder, a transmog is essentially a cosmetic item that you can "replace" a piece of gear with aesthetically, but keep all of the or??iginal stats of said gear. You'll need to go to a transmog NPC to actually make use of the Jewel of the Firelord, and it'll just appear on your account.

The Mid-Year, Level Up, and Games Under $20 sales are all running right now

The PlayStation Store is hosting three major sales (and a "Deal of the Week" promo on The Sims 4), so there are a lot of discounts floating around right now �?even more than normal. There's a Mid-Year sale on big PS4 and PS5 games, a Level Up sale on DLC and expansions, and a Games Under $20 sale with indies, hidden gems, and older titles.

Where to start? I never know. ?I'm just goin?g to toss out some chaotic recommendations.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands ($47.99 for PS4; $71.99 for PS4/PS5 with the Season Pass) and Riders Republic ($23.99) are two games I ended up enjoying far more than I wo?uld've expected. The former had a not-too-jarring D&D-ish story campaign, and the latter was a good way to unwind in a care-free extreme-sports open world with fun traversal options.

If you're looking to fill the Elden Ring-sized hole in your heart, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice ($29.99) is waiting, as always. You might have some whiplash �?Elden Ring has so many potential builds, while Sekiro is su??per focused with a bit of wiggle room �???but it's worth putting time into. When everything finally clicks into place, few games pay off better.

You might fi??nd a hidden gem in the Games Under $20 section, which is usually the most exciting place to poke around. Here are some assorted deals that stood out to me.

This team has a knack for crafting cool isometric settings.

It's worth it for the sights alone

Generally speaking, Beautiful Desolation went under the radar, but it got good reviews and has a positive player reception, so it's ??a worthwhile free ??point-and-click pickup, for sure.

Here's a bit more about the story and setting from the developers: "Mark, a man out of time, searches for his lost brother Don, in a far-flung futuristic era ruled by highly advanced technologies which are both revered and reviled. The inhabitants of this wo??rld will help and hinder you, as you make new discoveries and navigate the spectacular African-inspired landscape. From thriving villages to crumbling cities, petrified forests, and bone-dry ocean beds, this strange new world holds a multitude of terrains to uncover."

I've seen complaints about? some design elements �?what's your tolerance for fetch que??sts? �?but as an overall visual experience, this looks memorable.

June 20 is the deadline, and the GOG Summer Sale has another giveaway lined up.

While you're poking around, you may also want to snag Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut, a modern take on the classic game that will feel more palatable for some Elder Scrolls fans in 2022 who want to "go back" but not all the way back. It's ??also free �?"all you have to do is download the game and simply launch it," according to the team. I love a no-fuss setup.

I mean, get it if you don't have it

Celeste quickly became one of the most relevant platformers in the past five years or so, and if you haven't partaken yet, now is the time. Both Celeste and TowerFall are on sale for five bucks on the Switch eShop.

The news comes via Extremely OK Games (the creators ?behind both titles), and the interesting part of the announcement is that in addition to North America, it's also on sale in Europe: includi?ng parts of Europe it's never been on sale before in the past.

While TowerFall is easily better with local players behind it, Celeste is a must-buy in any context. Seriously, if you eve??n remotely enjoy platformers, just get it for that price. It'll last you through the weekend and then?? some, and odds are you'll be thinking about it long after that. And even if you don't normally like platformers or struggle with them, it has some extra options to tweak to make things a little more manageable.

You can find Celeste here on Switch, and TowerFall on sale here. The Switch is a great platform for both! Portability suits Celeste as it has echoes of a Game Boy title, and TowerFall, with its party atmosphere, makes sense for a Nin??tendo console??.

GOG is giving away a free Shantae and the Pirate's Curse PC copy, in case you don't own the game already.

So here's a quick rundown of how to redeem the free Shantae and the Pirate's Curse copy on GOG:

• The landing page of the game is here: you'll need to click "go to giveaway" to head to the main site to actually redeem it.
• On this giveaway page, you'll find the "add this game to your account" button roughly halfway in: just look for the Shantae image.

You have roughly 46 hours from the time of publication to actually claim the game. Note that you'll need to (at least temporarily) agree with marketi?ng communications from GOG to claim it, and have a ?logged-in account to boot.

Definitely do it, even if you have no intention of playing it anytime soon! Pirate's Curse is an interesting deviation from the Shantae formula, as it sees the titular character losing her genie powers in favor of going on a more traditional adventure. Some folks still consider it their favorite in the franchise, and given ?the aforementioned? conceit, it's a great entry point.

In case you missed it, Ark 2 was shown over the weekend at the Microsoft conference. But before that actually arrives sometime in 2023, there's a free Ark (the original) promo going on over on ?Steam. It typica?lly goes for $29.99 on the platform.

As usual, the standard provisos apply. The team could cut off the offer as it runs until "supplies last," though it's not particularly common for this to happen. Also, you don't get Steam trading cards via free games like this. Note that there is a cutoff time! You have until June 19 at 10:00AM PT to click "own." Just go log in and do it here in browser form!

After you pick the game up, there's a decent chunk of free and paid stuff to grab. Beyond the $29.99 season pass (which is on sale for $23.99 at the moment), there's also several expansion maps that you can pick up for free, including "Lost Island, Valguero, The Center, and Crystal Isles and Ragnarok" variations. A "Primitive Plus" total conversion mod is also free, which is intriguing in and of itself: "Primitive Plus is a free add-on for ARK: Survival Evolved that alters the available tools, weapons and structures in the game to reflect what humans could realistically create using primitive technology and resources. This does not simply remove advanced technology from ARK, but instead replaces it with a m??ultitude of new resources, engrams and systems."

While Ark might not be for everyone (and the survival genre is sure to scare off droves of people on principle), you could spend an entire weekend diving into this game before realizing you don't even like i??t.

Does anyone else remember Live from Daryl's House?

To this day, I don't think I ever ended up finishing Maneater, but I'd still recommend it to anyone wanting a silly arcadey action diversion with RPG progression to keep you going. It's been out for two years, and if you never got around to it, today's your day to grab Maneater for free from the Epic Games Store. The PC copy is up for grabs until June 16.

The game lets you conquer your oceanic fears �?instead of a he??lpless human, you play the power-hungry shark who's out for (well-justified!) revenge. Of course, you'll start off as a weakling in the shallows before bulking up enough to face your fisherman rival as the apex predator. The game has a satirical story for those who need some rising stakes.

I would've been fine exclusively focusing on the "game"-ier elements: fighting other aquatic life, feeding, gaining mass, and evolving new abilities. I mean, I'm the sorta person who grew up on educational (?) stuff like Odell Down Under. They had me at "shark game."

Fun as it is to flop around on land as a massive shark, I didn't necessarily care to chomp down on beach-goers, and I definitely liked the roaming hit-squad boats the least of anything in Maneater. You may feel differently, though! This is a somewhat uneven game when you rattle off nitpicks, but if you're mostly after exploration, collectibles, and powering up your shark like I was, there's fun to b??e had without too many unfun bits.

Maneater was a "free" game for PlayStation Plus subscribers, so I'm sure plenty of you played this and can speak to it as an experience you invested more time than money in. Worth adding: the expansion, Maneater: Truth Quest, is not included with this Epic Games Store free-to-keep deal �?you're just getting the eight-ish-hour base game?.

Next week's free PC game, Supraland, will be claimable from June 16�?3. I've been meaning to check it out! Inspired by Zelda, Metroid, and Portal, it's a first-person a??ction-puzzle game that "assumes that you are intelligent and lets you play independently."

Oh hey, Wolfenstein: The New Order is free. It's up for grabs on the Epic Games Store this week, and you've got until Thursday, June 9 to claim this (worth playing!) PC game.

It's something that many of us have already pla??yed by now thanks to years and years of deals, but I'm sure some of you reading this haven't tried it yet, and I?'d nudge you in that direction. I'm trying to put myself back in that 2014 headspace right now.

I remember being surprised by how much I enjoyed the story �?though, at the time, I was admittedly coming in for the FPS action, not necessarily the narrative. You can't help but root for B.J. Blazkowicz every step of the way, and Wolfenstein: The New Order feels really personal. You're out to brutalize every Nazi you see, naturally, but there are hard-hitting themes and genuine character moments in the mix, too. MachineGames swung for the fences, and it paid off; The New Order showed up in Game of the Year discussions.

With that said, even if you lack a soft spot for the Wolfenstein series (or have no personal hist?ory with it whatsoever), you can absolutely have?? a good time with this game.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was an increasingly out-there sequel, and not all of its zanier moments landed, but I still mostly dug the game and would be super on board for a (hopefully more well-rounded) Wolfenstein III. Yes, Indiana Jones is cool too. But come on!

It's worth checking out the free in-game content, too. Rolling into June, Amazon Prime Gaming is kicking off a series of Pokémon GO bonuses every two weeks. The first bundle, which is redeemable today, contains 30 Poké Balls, 5 Max Revives, and a Star Piece. Many of these content offers can be hit-or-miss, but I feel like Pokémon GO will really resonate with a lot of folks. Apex Legends, Roblox, Valorant, and Hearthstone are also on the docket.

Sony is trying to get PlayStation fans in the spending mood again with its annual PlayStation Days of Play sale. The promo will run for two weeks �?it's here through Wednesday, June 8 �?and features hundreds of PS4 and PS5 game deals on the PlaySta??tion Store, as well as discounted Du?alSense controllers, if you need to stock up.

Considering I just bought a Starlight Blue controller a few weeks ago, I'm a little bummed! But that's how it goes. If you're looking to pick up a secondary PS5 gamepad, the original White, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Midnight Black, Nova Pink, and Starlight Blue controllers are down to $59 on Amazon right now. Normally, they're $70-$75 a pop.

If you can tune out the noise, it's a lot of fun

From today until Thursday, May 26, you can download Borderlands 3 for free from the Epic Games Store �?or just add?? it to your never-act?ually-gonna-play-this PC game pile.

Is it worth your time? Well, that depends on how into Borderlands you were in the early days and how open to the series you are today. I'm the type of person who can tune out a lot of the grating NPC chatter and just enjoy the character-building, loot-s??natching, kinda-mindless-in-a-good-way setup �?but maybe that's too tall of an order fo?r you in 2022.

Borderlands 3 is particularly fun with co-op partners by your side (that goes for all of these games), and there are neat overpowered guns waiting to be found. Speaking of which, the PC version does allow cross-play, so if you're getting Borderlands 3 for free from the Epic Games Store and your f??riends already have it on Steam, you'll be able to play together.

My favorite change in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was the new on-foot overworld, which I greatly preferred to all of the driving in Borderlands 3 that ultimately felt like busywork to me. That said, the prior game still has its place in many ways, especially if you're even remotely interested in this ever-expanding universe. If you're primarily ??in it for the RPG-ifi??ed shooter gameplay at this point (same!), it's worth checking out. I mean, it is free.

This freebie was a "mystery game" until it unwrapped itself today, and the Epic Games Store's next deal is a surprise, too. We'll find ou?t what the next giveaway is on May 26.

Running from May 5�?6, 2022

As much as we've moved away from highlighting publisher-specific sales on Steam, sometimes, I can't help it. Devolver Digital's name is attached to so many interesting games that so many of us dig, and the publisher's current Steam sale �?which runs from May 5�?6 �?deserves a nod. Some of these games are a couple of bucks, if tha?t.

I don't even know where to begin with recommendations �?there's a lot to like, and plenty to love. In terms of more recent jams, there's Weird West ($29.99), Shadow Warrior 3 ($29.99), Loop Hero ($4.94), Inscryption ($13.99), and Death's Door ($11.99). Eric had some wacky tales to tell in his Weird West review; in case you mis??sed it, one of the protagonists is a pigman, and that's quite the setup for an action-RPG immersive sim.

I have too many recommendations

If we're dipping further back in the catalog, I'd give a shout to Boomerang X ($9.99) and Olija ($7.49), both of which feel more under-the-radar than they should be. The former is an aerial-focused action game that feels badass without being too unbearably intense, and the latter game reminded me of Éric Chahi's Another World. It's moody.

You also can't go wrong with Gris ($4.24), The Talos Principle ($3.99), Pikuniku ($3.24), or Downwell ($0.98) in this Devolver Digital Steam sale. How many more titles can I spout off? Let's rope in Ape Out ($3.74) and Sludge Life ($7.49), too. They're all such different experiences, yet they sit comfortab?ly side-by-side. ?This weirdo family makes sense.

Do as Arnold says and get your ass to Mars

This week on the Epic Games Store, board game purveyor Asmodee Digital is giving out Terraforming Mars for free. Just claim the PC game by May 12 to lock it up in your library.

As a quick aside, this music puts me i??n a real Commander Shepard state of mind.

Terraforming Mars is an adaptation of Jacob Fryxelius' 2016 strategy board game, and like its award-winning source material, you'll try to forget all of the terrible stuff you saw in Total Recall and Red Faction as you work to bend Mars to your will. Progress must ??be made!

Corporations clash as you and your big-business rivals "transform Mars into a habitable planet by spending vast resources and using? innovative technology to raise temperature, create a breathable atmosphere, and make oceans of water" to pile up Victory Points.

The PC game has single-pl??ayer support if you want to really take your time, or you can compete under pressure with f??ive others, whether that's AI opponents or real players.

I wasn't there at launch, but looking through the user reviews, Terraforming Mars was in dire need of bug fixing and other fine-tuning and it ha?s gotten better with updates.

"As an avid fan of the board game, I can recommend this game for new and experienced players," noted a player who goes by nimrod. "The way it keeps track of your points and cards is super convenient and the interface is easy to learn. If you ?enjoy a nice calm game to play alone or with friends that wracks?? your brain a lil bit, this one's for you."

If you ever need a feel-good palette cleanser, keep an eye on Terra Nil, too.

Valve's new PC game promo covers roguelikes, roguelites, soulslikes, and metroidvanias

Valve is hosting a big Going Rogue sale on Steam this week, and if you're into roguelike games, roguelite g?am??es, and everything in between, there are deals to check out by May 9.

Curiously, Steam's digital "festival" is also highlighting a whole bunch of games that were inspired by the Souls, Metroid, and Castlevania series, so the lines are even more blurred than normal. Valve broke down the genre differences in an?? explainer video, and as someone who tries not to get cranky about ever-shift?ing game genres, I'll stay out of it.

The main link: "They're all rooted in ele??ments of RPG fantasy ?or action, and persistence means success." That sums up a lot of my favorite video games, especially lately.

Whether or not you agree with the organizers' exact terminology, it's still a cute, well-meaning, personable video, and I hope Valve d??????????????????????????oes?? more of these in the future.

One mo??re caveat: not every Going Rogue game is on sale, so this spotlight is abo?ut getting Steam users' attention focused on cool games they might've missed.

The best of the best

Speaking of, it's neat to see the "top-rated" list, which spans Dead Cells, Hades, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Slay the Spire, Rogue Legacy 2, Risk of Rain 2, and even Vampire Survivors. I've bee??n meaning to check out that last one �?it's three bucks. What am I waiting for???

You really can't go wrong with any of those well-reviewed picks. I'd also strongly recommend Death's Door for $11.99 �?it's suitable for a really wide audience, and I hope it gets the legacy it deserves. What an awesome ??game; I loved 100%ing it.

As for me, I've got a lot more Rogue Legacy 2 grinding ahead of me. In case you missed it, the 1.0 version is out and it's fantastic. ??And better yet, it's 2??0 percent off right now.

Although there are a lot of RPGs and adap??tations, the Golden Week sale is pretty varied if you dig deep enough, and the Under $20 sale is even more of a budget bin grab-bag??.

Filtering only "full games" on the PlayStation Store, the Golden Week Sale has 300 deals, and the Under $20 sale has almost 600. I?t's times like this where wishlists can really come in handy, though if you're anything like me, you will never be a "wishlist" sorta person. Before long, planning becomes over-planning and the walls come closing in. I'd rather nab games here and there, in the moment, even if means being burned sometimes.

The PlayStation Store Spring Sale is hosting a thousand deals for PS4 and PS5 owners to peruse �?but what's actually worth playing? I know, I know. That's always the question. There's a full text-based list ??on the PlayStation Blog, and I'?ve got some highlights.

While we're at a point where the same heavy hitters keep piling onto these sales, that isn't necessarily a complaint. For instance, on the PS5 front, I'm happy to see some of the must-plays like Demon's Souls, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart pop up. I am also pleased to see a half-price deal on Sekiro, which has come up in multiple conversations with colleagues post-Elden Ring. From Software's latest is awesome, but there's truly no topping the relentless bosses in Sekiro, and I am craving a replay now more than ever.

I can't exhaustively vouch for a handful of these games, but I included them anyway because of positive word-of-mouth, the sale's low price poin??t, or ideally both.

You have a while to sit on these deals, as the PlayStation Spring Sale will run through April 27. That said, some of the deals are only here for a couple of weeks �?they're set to expire on April 13. And, according to Sony, "additional titles" will join the sal?e on t?hat day.

In other words, keep carving through Elden Ring as needed. There's time.
