March 8 is not far off now. But for those a little too impatient for then, a small slice of Unicorn Overlord is on the way for Switch owners today thr??ough a demo, to tide you over until then.

Announced during today's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord is getting a demo for Nintendo Switch today. [Update: Originally posted with just a Switch listing, Atlus has confirmed that the Unicorn Overlord demo will also be available on PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S startin??g on Thursday, February 22. We've updated the piece to reflect?? as much.]

Good news for those looking to hop in early, too: save data carries over into the full game. It's a nice featu??re for those who don't want to lose their potential progress if they wind up deciding to play the full game.

Don't lord it over me

It's nice, at least, to see a demo out for this, ??and with save data ??carrying over too. It feels like we've seen a lot more of these over recent years, and for big RPGs, it's an especially nice feature. A good way to dip your toe in without committing the full way.

And there looks to be quite a bit to commit to in Unicorn Overlord. The latest game from 13 Sentinels and Dragon's Crown studio Vanillaware sees the team tackling tactics, with battles reminiscent of both Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system, somehow.

It could be a big game to dig into, so having a little time to check it out now amongst a slew of other demos and games hitting the Switch is nice. If you end up digging it, the full game of Unicorn Overlord arrives on March 8, 2024 for PlayStation 4?, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switc??h.

Want to dive into Cloud and co.'s post-Midgar adventures early? You’re in luck. Announced at the State of Play today, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is getting a demo, and it's out today on th??e ??PlayStation Store. 

The demo will get you access to the first chapter of Rebirth, with a party of Cloud and Sephiroth in the game's opening. Sometime between today and the release of Rebirth, the demo will also be update??d to extend to Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barrett, and Red XIII in Junon. There was no mention of whether save progress would carry over or not.

Final Fantasy games have been consistently getting demos lately. Last year, we got the fantastic Final Fantasy XVI demo and, before that, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins. In fact, in 2020, Square Enix released a demo for Final Fantasy 7 Remake which covered the first chapter. 

News of this new Rebirth demo leaked a little ahead of schedule last night, via the Explore page.

As a fan of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I’ve been hyped about Rebirth for a while. Plus, I just finished Crisis Core Reunion, so I’m up-to-date on whatever craziness Tetsuya Nomura and the team have in store. I’m way too curious as to why a certain black-haired SOLDIER is still alive and squatting.

The demo should be available today on the PlayStation store for players to plunge their swords into, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releases on February 28 on PlayStation 5.

I’ve been patiently anticipating Chicken Police: Into the Hive since its announcement last June. I loved 2020’s Chicken Police: Paint it RED, and was hopeful for a continuation. I got an early look at the demo, and it’s a pretty bland taste, but it’s not necess??arily indicative of a problem.

I think it’s difficult to build a demo of any narrative-centric game. Usually, these sorts of titles have a slow build with character introductions, and they may not begin any meaty twisting until later in the game. Trying to fit both the context and the hook into a demo without giving away too much of the overall runtime can be difficult, and Chicken Police: Into the Hive isn’t the most impressive attempt.

It doesn’t do anything to sully my?? excitement for the full story, bu??t it doesn’t really heighten it, either.

I do want to note that, as I played the demo, it was still undergoi?ng some last-minute development, so some things that I note might not be in the experience you play.

The demo of Chicken Police: Into the Hive kind of skips the initial setup. Sonny Featherland has already been visited by someone and given a case to work on. If you’re to??ld what the case was, it must’ve went by so fast that I initially missed it. I figured it out la??ter on, but we’re missing the motivation. The case is a dangerous and unusual one, so how Sonny was convinced to take it on isn’t really explained here.

Instead, Into the Hive starts with Sonny tracking his part??ner, Marty MacChicken, down to his apartment, where his wife is throwing his drunken ass out. What led to this isn’t explained, either, but that’s intentional. Sonny even asked him during the demo if he got drunk and was thrown out or if being thrown? out was the cause of his getting drunk.

Afterward, it’s to the police station where Marty and Sonny run into their foils, Plato and Moses. Moses was introduced in the Zipp’s Cafe prologue game, but the important details revealed there are covered here. They’re star detectives trying to escape the shadow of the Chicken Police. Obviously, they hate each other, but they’re set up in such a way that it seems like they’ll have to cooperate at some poi??nt.

Finally, ?Monica, the receptionist at the Police Station, makes a reappearance at the shooting range. ??Something obviously has her frustrated, and she’s venting it with a hand cannon, but she won’t tell the chickens what it is.

??Then, the chickens set out to the Hive, which is a fenced-off Ghetto at the edge of Clawville where all the insects of the city live. It’s, uh, uncomfortably topical, but I doubt that was intentional.

The Hive was glimpsed in the first Chicken Police title, where Marty and Sonny state their sympathy for the insects, but their stance is more that Clawville is a corrupt, ?rotting husk to begin with, and this is yet another injustice against its inhabitants.

Oh, right. The case that they’re on. As it turns out, the body of a murdered insect went missing, and they’re trying to find out why. Again, the part where we learn the significance of this is cut from the demo, so it’s a bit? confusing.

However, we do get a feel for the (very light) puzzle-solving at this point. There’s also a drunken bird in the Distant Light Bar, where you can play a pretty amusing minigame against. Finally, you meet the Spider Queen, who apparently rule??s over the Hive. That’s it. The demo ends there, teasing you with an interrogation event and then snatching it away.

As I stated at the hop, this doesn’t suggest anything is amiss with the development of Chicken Police: Into the Hive. It just doesn’t really tell us much. I feel? like, by cutting out the introduction and interrogation with the queen, the Wild Gentlemen might have trimmed out what might be needed hooks. Instead, we get a number of character introductions, and that’s about it. We don’t even reall??y get to hear the motivation of the central characters.

That’s not to say the demo doesn’t have any value. If you didn’t partake in Zipp’s Cafe, it’s at least an introduction to the plot and characters of Into the Hive. The excellent photo manipulation is demonstrated to have returned. It’s still great, but I noticed that it seems a bit more out of focus when played in 4K compared to the crispness of the first ??game. I value that crispness.

An addition since the first game is the ability to play it in color. I prefer the old noir look of black-and-white, but I don't see a reason to not have the choice to play in color. All the photos they had to take would have probably been in color initially. It even brings?? its own stylistic touches, as many of the colors have a st??riking garishness to them. It can be changed with the press of a button, so it’s a good addition.

The mini-game in the bar was fun, as well. You flick peanuts and try to bank them against the glasses to get the other person to drink. Paint it RED had some good diversions between all the dialogue, and that looks ??like it’s goi??ng to be the case here.

I’m going to repeat myself here and say that I’m not less excited to play the full release of Chicken Police: Into the Hive, but I’m also not more excited. It’s a bit of a strange demo the somehow doesn’t really present anything unique to really hook you. At best, it’s reassurance that this will be more Chicken Police. I??n that case, I’d just recommend playing the first game to see if you’d be into the second.

On the other hand, at least it doesn’t make my anticipation any more unbearable. I can just go back to?? doing�?whatever it is I do.

I'll make the same pitch I made decades ago when I came across it on the?? SNES: it's an all-comers RPG. No matter how much you might dislike the genre or Mario as a concept, it has plenty of ways to win ?you over. It's also perfect for folks newer to RPGs as a whole and there are enough hooks present for veterans.

If you're already on board or can't be swayed, there's plenty of other stuff to sift through too. Persona 5 Tactica and Bluey: The Videogame both arrive on November 17; and Howl, Backpack Hero, Passpartout 2: The Lost Artist, and Enjoy the Diner all came out as a result of the recent Indie World Showcase.

Hogwarts Legacy kind of came and went earlier this year (twice, if you count the PS4/Xbox One ports), and now it's about to release a third time: on Switch. It's due out on November 14, and depending on who you ask, the below debut game trailer is either miraculous or messy. It really depends on your taste in Switch ports. The real test is going to be how it plays and if it can maintain a consistent framerate.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle will offer some counterprogramming. Described as a "chaotic rhythm adventure," this single-system multiplayer game looks promising. It's out on November 14. Plus, a bunch of othe??r games are out between now and the next week, so check them all out below!

Every so often, I think of how crazy Sega's Dreamcast era was. It came out with a huge bang, then fizzled so hard that Sega got out of the console game completely. Given that I still play my Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD, and Dreamcast in my spare time, it's like it never died: but it did! That's why it's so amazing to me that the Sonic franchise has not only endured but is constantly debuting on a system run by its former competitor, Nintendo. My, how this year has gone by so fast! We're already in October which, for you demo lovers, means Steam Next Fest. If you haven't been keeping up, this is your reminder that the event will go live soon, at 1??0am PT.

The event gives you access to hundreds of demos of upcoming releases from a variety of studios. You can also chat with some of the d??evelopers or watch livestreams. It's basically a celebration of everything that makes indie gaming so good.

At the moment, we don't know exactly what'?ll be featured, but the above video teases what you can expect to find. Did I just hear something about a Grim Reaper dating simulator?

Sounds Steam-y

Anyone who games on PC knows that Steam is no stranger to events, celebrations, and sales. It's part of the reason Valve's service is still many pe?ople's g?o-to. While the Summer Sale is arguably the one that most look forward to, things like Next Fest offer up something in between the more mainstream events.

Steam also turned 20 years old recently, which was celebrated with �?you guessed it �?a big sale. I still can't believe the studio behind Half-Life would go on to create one of the biggest PC gaming clients out th?ere. Sure, there are great alternatives, s??uch as GOG, Epic Games Store, and Humble Bundle, but Steam is pretty much the OG of this market.

Next Fest goes on until October 16, so you have plenty of time to check o?ut what's available from upcoming developers.

It's a fairly big week for the Nintendo eShop, as Mortal Kombat 1 is hitting the figurative stands, and is technically available now in early access with the typically-WB exclusive Shang Tsung character. Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster are out today, and Gloomhaven launches on Switch on September 18.

The latter is a really interesting release, as it's a port of the digitized version of Gloomhaven proper: a massively successful board game Kickstarter that launched in 2017. Having played through the entire campaign I can attest to how fun ??it is with the right group, and while the digital version doesn't quite hit the same for me, it's fun to play through bite-sized missions on the go.

It's a great week for indies on the Nintendo eShop, as Fae Farm (September 8) headlines a pretty impressive set of games that will be arriving through September 13. Super Bomberman R 2 and Gunbrella are dropping on that exact day, with MythForce (that Saturday morning cartoon-inspired game) launching just a day earlier on September 13.

In what is decidedly not an indie release, NBA 2K24 rounds out the week on September 8. Hey, variety is the spice of life! You can find the rest of the lineup below, including Escape Academy: The Complete Edition, which was a ton of fun on other platforms (??the Switch port quality is still TBD, s?o keep that in mind).

Rune Factory 3, which debuted in 2009 on DS (wow!), is getting the remaster treatment for Switch. It's out on September 5, and will bring the farming/combat hybrid series back into the fray. So what's new? Well, there's a "newlywed mode," which entails standalone quests based on the 11 people you can marry in the game; as well as a "hell difficulty" setting. Given how much there is to do in the game already, that's not a bad deal. Chants of Sennaar is also out, which has a wild premise and a?n interesting art style.

Remember Samba de Amigo? No longer relegated to serving as a racing game cameo who was once prominently featured in a franchise of old: the monkey wit?h attitude returns in Samba de Amigo: Party C?entral on Switch.

Sea of Stars is also out on August 29, and fascinatingly, serves as a prequel to Sabotage Studio's wild 2018 project The Messenger. Blasphemous 2?? (which we reviewed!) is out today, rounding out a pretty strong showing for the Switch eShop, w?ith three brand new games this week. We knew that Red Dead Redemption II would be coming to Switch, and now it's finally here! Whether it's actually worth the (checks notes) $50 Rockstar is charging for it is one thing: but at least it comes with the Undead Nightmare DLC, which is one o??f? the silliest romps the studio has ever created.

In other Switch eShop news, Quake II was surprised-released, and we even reviewed it (on PC)! This classic still holds up, but if you want something newer, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is out on August 18. Here's the gist of this extremely Jet Set Radio-looking game: "Red is a graffiti writer who lost his head and instead has an AI robohead. In search of his roots, he joins the Bomb Rush Crew, Tryce and Bel, who are aiming to go All City. Together they discover who it was ?that cut off his head and how deeply Re??d’s human side is linked to the graffiti world."

In a bizarre move, Red Dead Redemption will be available on Nintendo Switch for $49.99 on August 17, and uh, the reaction to that price has been "mixed," to put it lightly! I mean, I guess it does have the Undead Nightmare DLC and the Game of the Year bonus content, but you can get all of that and more for much cheaper on othe??r platforms. The Switch version (alongside the upcoming PS4 edition) also does not include multiplayer capabilities. In any case, the choice is yours.

Moving Out 2 is the other major release, and that's out on August 15. This is a day-and-date release with other platforms, which is always nice to see. Oh, and there are tons of other things out if you want to comb through the be?low list!
