After layoffs were issued at Eidos Montreal at the start of 2024, hopes of ever seeing a new Deus Ex game went out the window (thanks, ??Embracer Group).

It's a shame, really. The last entry 2016's Deus Ex: Mankind Divided ended in a way that a follow-up ?made sense. To drop the series so abruptly while it was enjoying a resurgence feels like a massive middle finger to the fans.

But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, I'm going to show you what the gaming media at large thought of each Deus Ex entry. To do so is to show that with the possible exception of one the games were pretty lauded. Some of the later ones weren't exactly considered perfect, but then what is (possible exception: Red Dead Redemption 2)?

As always, this list will contain the mainline entries in the series. I'm also chucking in the one spin-off and a mobile title. So....all of them except for Breach, basically. I'll also be basing them off their PC scores where possible. With that in mind, let's get into all the Deus Ex games as judged by Metacritic.

Deus Ex: The Fall (2013) - 45%

Deus Ex The Fall: Agents Ben Saxon and Anna Kelso stand next to each other with other merceneries in the background.
Image via Eidos Montreal.

We'll start with something that's a bit of an outlier. Not only is The Fall a spin-off to the Deus Ex story, ?but it's also the only entry that wasn't developed by either Ion Storm or Eidos Montreal. That and it wa??s originally a mobile release. That doesn't necessarily mean it was destined to be a not-so-favorably-received game, but...well...you've seen the score.

Now, in fairness, the above Metacritic number is based on reviews for the PC version. Who knew taking a mobile game and porting it to another system would not go down so well? I would imagine a lot of people. PC Gamer described it as "one o??f the worst PC ports" back in 2014.

So, okay, what if we were to use the score from the original iOS release? Well, that would put it at 69%, which is not terrible, but it's not great either. It would also still mean that The Fall goes dead last on this list.

Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003) - 80%

Deus Ex Invisible War: Alex D points a gun at the screen.

There are inevitably going to be a few concerns on the developer side when it comes to doing a sequel to a critically acclaimed release (more on that later). Invisible War came just three years after the original Deus Ex, which had received pretty universal praise from reviewers and gamers alike. That's a tough act ??to follow by anyone's measur??e.

Despite notable criticisms, the Metacritic score speaks for itself, really. With a glowing 80% on PC (and 84% on Xbox), Invisible War was a solid follow-up to its 2000 predecessor, even if it was flawed. I would imagine at least a couple of points got knocked off for calling the protagonist Alex D. Despite conspiracy theories and cyberpunk themes rampant throughout, I can'?t help but picture the world being saved by someone who possibly moonlights as a techno DJ sporting frosted tips, and who has a penchant for John Woo films.

I haven't actually played this one, so I can't make any judgments. What I can tell you is that it was an early adopter of Unreal Engine 2, which meant it could make use of some hilarious "ragdoll" physics that was starting to become all the rage at that point. Maybe that's not too impressive these days, but I do quite like the fact that this Deus Ex game was made using the same dev toolkit as Postal 2. I dunno. There's just something slightly amu??sing about that.

Deus Ex GO (2016) - 81%

Deus Ex GO: Adam Jensen poses on a gray background.

Let it never be said that mobile gaming isn't worth a hill of beans in this cutthroat industry. While not every studio can produce a Candy Crush, Angry Birds, or...I don't know...Guns of Boom, we can still get some high-quality gaming for our morning commutes. Deus Ex GO is such an example.

This was basically a follow-on from Eidos Montreal's other installments in its mobile GO series, with games such as Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO following a?? similar format to this one. It's pretty far removed from the other entrie??s in the series as far as gameplay is concerned, but its puzzle-based, hexagonal grid, touchscreen mechanics evidently worked.

I actually did play this one many years ago, and it had its moments. Sadly, like a lot of mobile games, Deus Ex seemed short-lived. With a respectable Metacritic score of 81%, it seems a Windows p?ort was released not long a??fter the iOS version. However, it looks like it's hard to come by these days.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016) - 83%

Deus Ex Mankind Divided: Adam Jensen poses with a gun as a black background explodes with orange.
Image via Eidos Montreal.

I finished replaying Mankind Divided just the other day, which is what prompted me to write this article. You probably didn't need to know that information. I just thought it was worth mentioning. Anyway, this was the last Deus Ex game we got, and it's fast approachin?g its eighth birthday. Where does the time go?

I feel it's a lot easier to look back at this one with a sense of joy and wonder. Game Informer (RIP) gave it a meaty 8/10 but criticized Eidos Montreal for disguising "hot-button issues as speculati??ve fiction" while sacrificing "an interesting story to hammer home its messaging." However, The Guardian called it a "half-baked cyberpunk sequel," giving it a middling 3/5 stars.

Look, what I'm trying to do here is shoehorn in a "fan-kind divided" joke, which I'm positive no one else has ever said when talking about this specific Deus Ex game. No sirree. So to summarize: I actually really like Mankind Divided (83% on PC is not to be snubbed??), but I'm evidently not very good at trying to set up punchlines.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011) - 90%

Deus Ex Human Revolution: Adam Jensen poses in a trench coat as the black background explodes with orange.
Image via Eidos Montreal.

Human Revolution is steeped in cultural significance, and I don't say that lightly. It had been eight years since a Deus Ex game was released, and this one was made by a different studio than the original developer, Ion Storm. That meant the series was experiencing something of a rebirth which, according to art director Jonathan Jacques-BelletĂŤte, drove the team to find inspiration in Renaissance ??art for the vi?suals.

Despite the hiatus (or, perhaps, even because of it), Human Revolution was a triumph. I got a copy of it not long after its release, and I was entranced. Its emphasis on stealth and a story rich in political and societal tur??moil, all of which w?as wrapped up in corporate shenanigans, appealed to 2011 me.

Human Revolution was something of a triumphant return for the series, and while we'll never know what the John Romero-founded Ion Storm could have done with a third Deus Ex game, Eidos did a mighty fine job.

It wasn't perfect, mind you. Before the Director's Cut was released, the game forced you into boss fights where murder was a requirement, even if you were gunning for a stealthy, no-kill playthrough. This was a kick in the teeth for people like me, marring what should have been a stealth-lover's near-flawless game. This was eventually fixed, though, leaving Human Revolution a formidable part of the Deus Ex arc.

Deus Ex (2000) - 90%

Deus Ex: JC Denton looks up as a light descends on his face.
Image via Eidos Montreal.

If you haven't played the original, you might be wondering why Deus Ex sits just ahead of Human Revolution when both games have a score of 90%. After all, Deus Ex is nearly two and a half decades old, looks pretty ugly ??by today's standards, and its old-school gameplay mechanics makes it less accessible to modern gamers.

But when Deus Ex hit game stores, there wasn't much like it. Its sophisticated role-play elements are what made it so immersive. It's generally considered to be one of the first games in the immersive sim genre, which would eventually lead to popular titles such as Dishonored and Prey.

Deus Ex also had an incredibly complex narrative centered around global politics and international terrorism. Those themes are popular now, but they weren't the norm in 2000. Deus Ex earned IGN's Best of 2000 Award for Best ??Storyline thanks to that daring political n??arrative.

It still has its criticisms and detractors, but Deus Ex went down as one-of-a-kind for its generation. To this day, it regularly appears on lists of the best PC role-playing games of all time, despite the fact that it's pretty dated now. But even if you can't get into the original Deus Ex a quarter of a century later, it's impossible to deny the impact it had at t??he start?? of the new millennium.

Recently, Eilas Toufexis, the voice behind Adam Jensen from the later Deus Ex games, posted a heartfelt goodbye to the character he's best known for. With hopes of a new entry fading fast, the actor has since said he's been asked to ease up when talking about the Mankind Divided and Human Revolution protagonist.

In an interview with PCGamesN, Toufexis likened the current state of the video game industry to a "disaster zone." Referring to the continuing onslaught of studios shutting down, projects being shelved, and conglomerates laying staff off, the actor opines about how things ar?e at the moment.

//twitter.com/EliasToufexis/status/1755392785782566933

With regard to Deus Ex, Toufexis said he never heard a?nything official after 2016. Every piece o??f information that came to him about the franchise was "unofficial, from friends or acquaintances." He also mentions how developer Eidos contacted him in 2020 to ask him to "stop talking about Adam Jensen in interviews and podcasts."

Imagine giving Jensen a gag order

The response goes on to say that the reason the developer doe??sn't want him talking about the? character is because "they wanted people to focus on other things from the studio."

Last month, it was announced that parent company Embracer Group allegedly shuttered an in-progress Deus Ex game. This was on top of 97 people being ?laid off, which is a head??line many of us have sadly become used to seeing these past 12 months or so.

Fortunately, Toufexis is still busy with work. In a post on Twitter recent??ly, he said he's currently working on a couple of games, but "I'd expect them all to be canceled before the end of the week or something." He adds that he's doing fine, though: "I'm very lucky to have many irons in the fire. Games are just in a weird place right now." True that.

Recently, we brought news that Embracer Group was l??aying off s??taff at Eidos Montreal. This brought to the fore the uncertainty of the Deus Ex franchise, and now some words of thanks have come from the voice? of Adam Jensen himself.

In a recent post on the Mankind Divided subreddit, Elias Toufexis wanted to express his appre??ciation ?for the support over the years. With this, the actor has essentially said goodbye to Jensen, adding that "his story seems done."

//www.reddit.com/r/Deusex/comments/1akyb35/thanks/?share_id=3wL-efy1SDFKu5Po8tJMg

With the future of Deus Ex uncertain, Toufexis has said that the recent layoffs and the alleged cancellation of a? potential new game have "angered" him. However, he does jokingly, it seems suggest that someone ??like Elon Musk ("I think he has some money") could possibly take over the franchise and keep it going.

Who better to take the reins on dystopian sci-fi..?

We will likely never know what would have become of Adam Jensen. Toufexis seems certain that, had the studio been working on a ne??w story based around the character, he would have been contacted.

His message is also the culmination of ongoing dismay within the gaming industry, as huge companies make cutbacks, with some s??tudios shutting down entirely. Eidos Montreal is sadly one of the more recent examples of this swathe of job losses.

But it seems Toufexis wants to try and put a more positive spin on things, hoping fans will continue to like his non-Jensen work. Whether we will ever see a new Deus Ex game again remains to be seen, but with Mankind Divided coming up on the eight-year anniversary of its release, a lot of us are more than ??hungry for a return to this universe.

A former art director for the studio said their version was "really, really cool"

Seems like in another timeline, we could've seen a fairly different take on Final Fantasy XV looked like. In a new interview, a former Eidos Montreal developer says the studio worked on a version of Final Fantasy XV, before Square Enix canceled it.

In an interview with TrueAchievements, former Eidos Montreal art director Jonathan Jacque-BelletĂŞte said the studio once worked? on a version of the game.

"[Eidos-Montreal] brought back Deus Ex," he said. "I was the art director on thatem>Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Then [I was] the executive art director on Mankind Divided. Then we tried to do Final Fantasy XV. Then they decided to bring it back to Japan—which I think was a big?? mistake, but it's still the truth. Ours was really, really cool."

Jacque-BelletĂŞte didn't expand further on what exac??tly this meant. We don't have any specifics on how far along the game was, or what stage it ?reached internally before it was cut off.

It does partially reinforce a 2018 report from YouTuber SuperBunnyhop, though. The report there was that their version of the next Final Fantasy was a "space opera" RPG.

New horizons

With the gap between Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011) and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016), it certainly seems plausible. Final Fantasy XV did go through a pretty tumultuous production timeline. Whatever there was of Eidos Montreal's Final Fantasy is lost to time now, though.

Square Enix recently parted ways with Eidos Montreal and several other of its western studios. The publisher sold Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and S??quare Enix Montrea??l to Embracer Group for $300 million. Included in the deal were several big-name properties, including Deus Ex, as well as Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain.

Now, Eidos and Final Fantasy won't get their chance, it seems. Given their surprising success with last year's Guardians of the Galaxy, I'd still like to see what kind of space opera RPG that crew coul?d put to?gether.

Forget ask, I'm begging for this

Almost 20 years ago, Ion Storm set the world on fire with the release of the original Deus Ex. Headed by War??ren Spector, the game was an incredible combination of first-person mechanics, science fiction world-building and player freedom that set the groundwork for other games to follow. It made a legend out of Spector and gave PC players a game that just wasn't possible anywhere else (until it was dumbe??d down for a PS2 port years later).

Since then, the only other Deus Ex game to be touched by Spector was the far less successful follow-up, Invisible War. While it wasn't far removed in terms of setting and atmosphere, the game was severely pulled back in scale from the original due to being made for the original Xbox. Some fans dig it, but most co??nsider it a failure and it basically signaled the end of Ion Storm.

Would Spector ever consider returning to the franchise? You better believe it! In an interview with VG 24/7, Spector said, "I'd make another game in a heartbeat. I love that world. I love gameplay, [but] don’t hold your breath." With the series under the control of Ei??dos Montreal, though, who knows if we'll see the return of S?pector to the series.

At least in his opinion, Human Revolution was a worthy follow-up. He wasn't big on everything, to which he told VG 24/7, "If you ask my wife, she’d tell you that I screamed in frustration throughout much of Human Revolution. There were three or four things that I would have done differently and those three or four things ki??nd of bug me." Those things include the third-person cover system, AI timeout system, the abysmal boss fights and the lack of a constant melee attack.

"Here’s the deal, the real bottom line. When I got to the end, I felt like I had had a Deus Ex experience," Spector admitted. "The team up there was really respectful of what we wanted to do in the original game and I think they did a really good job, with the exception of just a handful of things that frustrated me." You can't get better praise tha??n that.

Since Deus Ex is on a hiatus after Mankind Divided, I'm now genuinely wondering if Square Enix will consider having Spector step in for the third Jensen game. We still don't know what is going on with the series, so having it return to the original entry would be m??agnificent. A man can dream, at least.

Probably from the community blogs

You know what's an awful thing no one should ever do, because of how wrong it is and how bad it makes you look? Jumping on controversy [~600 comments! -Ed.] for the simple reason of gaining popularity and notice. I wouldn't do that. No one should do that. It's wrong and bad, and if your mom didn't teach you to not do that you need to give her a call and?? tell her she failed, and it's her fault that you turned out the way you did, because you're right. Your mother is a failure.

Now, let's talk about this whole Deus Ex game!

I'm going to level with you here: I don't know the game's title, and I'm pretty certain it has a weird subtitle that I don't know how to spell, so I'm just going to call it Deus Ex XXX to match the spicy nature of its subject matter. I don't think I need to tell you why it's controversial, because it wouldn't be a controversy, then. Duh. Anway, I'm here to tell you about things that are way more controversial than Deus Ex XXX ever will be. So, le??t's dive right into?? the blood and titties. Right? Right!

CAUTION: This bad boy is image-heavy, because using a bunch of pictures is way easier than using wo??rds. Yay! So, jack two phones into your dial-up drives and blast off at warp-speed, you pimply n??erd, you.

DAHMER VS GACY

This is a movie about not one serial killer, but two real-life, ripped-from-the-headlines maniacs who massacred innocent people across America. In thi?s fantasy scenario, the two killers are imprisoned by the government who are using the killers' blood to make their own super-killer (so now t??he movie is political, too!), and the duo escape. They kill a bunch of people during that time and teach us that, yes, serial killers are bad.

Deus Ex XXX is not more controversial than this movie, because serial killers will murder anyone, and in this game only aug people are being killed. That doesn't scare me, because I don't know any aug people. According to Google an aug is a kind of assault rifle. If these people are part assault rifle, I'm pretty su?re they can defend themselves.

LAW AND ORDER

This is a show known for its searing ripped-from-the-headlines story creation, because eventually you'll run out of ideas in your head. Often these stories go unnoticed and watched only by suburban housewives several years later on USA Network reruns, between commercials about how it's your money and you should be able to use it when you need it. But one caught the nation on fire. It's the one where drama actor mastermind Chevy Chase played a fictional version of Mel Gibson who got arrested and said shitty things about the Jews while drunk. This was the most important crime in America that year. It left a nation stunned and ruined the career of the man who was in Payback so badly that now h??e can't put his own name on the trailer for an upcoming movie that he directed.

Law and Order is more controversial than Deus Ex XXX probably will ever be, because Chevy Chase says "Sugar Tits" in it. Th??ere's a woman cop interrogating him, and he calls her "Sugar Tits." That was said on TV, just like in the recording of Mel Gibson when drunk. "Sugar Tits." Let that sink in. I'll give you a moment.

Just kidding--onto the next one!

POKEMON GO

See ??how cute that Raichu is? You wa?nt him, don't you?

Well, pump the breaks, mother fucker, be?cause that electro-rat will get you killed.

Yeah, not only has Pokemon GO led to people discovering dead bodies and not being able to catch them and give goofy nicknames to the deceased, it's also directly responsible for crimes and actual murder. People have died playing Pokemon GO. That's more than one person,?? which is way, way??, way too many people for a video game. It's responsible for the deaths of more folks than any video game in the history of games.

Deus Ex XXX will probably not kill anyone. I know it's pretty hard to believe right now, but no one is going to die from Deus Ex XXX.

And Finally:

RESTAURANTS THAT MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU'RE EATING POOP OUT ?OF A TOILET

Seriously, who did this? What psychotic monster masquerading in people-skin thought this shit (notice my pun, folks!) was a good idea? That's disgusting. Poop and food don't go together. One ?goes after the other. That's the way it works. It's the circle of life. You eat, you poop, you eat. If you put the two together, then you break the circle. It's insane. Look, there's a little poop staring you in the face the whole time that you eat, judging you, letting you know what awfulness awaits you after you've finished.

Why would you want to eat food that looks like poop out of little toilets??? If you take a child here, you'd better flush every time you use a toilet, because that little shit (feast upon the punny goodness!) will just be waiting for the next opportunity to scarf down your fecal matter. And you taught your child that. What are you? A walking, talking anus-??face? Those are the only people who would think eating in a vomit-factory like this is a good idea.

I mean, just look at this. Your seats a little toilets with poop pillows. You sit on toilets, eat from toilets, and have poop cushion you and stare at you while you eat like some pig. Is this a fetish? Do people get off on the degradatio?n, on the lack of humanity? This has to be a sex thing. Rational folks without sex drives wouldn't subject themselves to this shit (the holy trinity of puns!).

Are the toilets giant food bowls that you squat in while a cow watches you do your dirty ??work? Is everything reversed there? Does nothing make sense?

Whew. I--I got to sit down or something. I need a nap. It's just too much controversy f??or the bod?y to take. ;Anyway, in summation, Deus Ex XXX despite the provocative title probably?? won't be that controversial.

But we might not like the process

Square Enix and Eidos Montreal are concentrated on the release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided early next year, but that doesn't preclude it from turning its attention to games of the past. With Microsoft's E3 reveal of Xbox One backward compatibility, the publisher and developer are looking at adding Deus Ex: Human Revolution to the program.

When asked about the possibility of seeing this last-gen game on Xbox One via backward compatibility, the official Deus Ex Twitter account replied "We're working to make it happen. :) W??e're hoping to have good news soon."

In recent months, Xbox has explained the program as something that publishers can simply opt into without any hassle. There's no extra development needed. Xbox pitched i?t as a process that's as easy as flipping a switch.

Even though the program is still only available in beta, we've seen several examples of companies using promised backward compatibility as a sales tactic. Pre-ordering Fallout 4 ensured Fallout 3 on Xbox One sometime in the future. Likewise, buying Gears of War Ultimate Edition makes the entire four-game Xbox 360 collection available via backward compatibility.

Even though nothing of this nature has been said, it's not too far out there to predict that Square Enix might try to push pre-orders a little further by dangling Human Revolution as bait. Thus far, a collector's edition has been announced with multiple tiers of pre-order incentives. If enough units are pre-ordered, the game will release early (although, it's never been said what number this goal will be reached at). So yeah, adding backward compatibility into this? pre-order fold sounds right in step with the way this campaign is going.

So it looks like we're still getting that Deus Ex movie, whether we like it or not. The tragic history of film adaptations of videogames makes me less than enthused about the project; however, the setting and philosophical quandaries of Deus Ex: Human Revolution do make for an interesti??ng set-up, even if I felt that the game itself dealt with them in a?? rather lackluster fashion.

C. Robert Cargill, who has been working on the screenplay, and director Scott Derrickson attempted to put folks' minds at ease in a recent interview with CraveOnline. "The chief philosophy is we’re not making a video game movie, we’re making a cyberpunk movie," Cargill explained. Seeing as that I lov??e the latter and despise th?e former, it's certainly reassuring to hear this -- if it actually turns out to be true.

Cargill has been doing a spot of research in an effort to avoid the many mistakes made by other videogame movies. "We’ve taken a look at what’s worked in video games and what hasn?’t, and really what we’ve?? broken down is what we think the audience really wants, [what] the audience that loves Deus Ex is going to want to see out of a Deus Ex movie. And it’s not a rehashin??g of the game."

Since cyberpunk isn't exac?tly a genre that has seen much love in cinema, Cargill and Der?rickson have been drawing inspiration from other recent science-fiction flicks that attempt to do something a wee bit different.

"We’re looking at movies like District 9 and Looper, and Inception," C??argill clarified. "Those are the molds of what we’ve been doing. It’s… Let’s push this and do some??thing new with concepts people love, but tell a story that they’ve never seen before, that just melts their brain."

Derrickson believes that now is the time when cyberpunk movies can really do well. "There’s a reason we haven’t had a great cyberpunk movie yet. There’s a reason why a sci-f?i movie as great as Neuromancer has never made it to the screen. I do think there’s a new wave coming, and not just because? the technology and the effects are up to speed, but I think that there’?s a sensibility to cyberpunk that the movies are catching up with.

If they truly are just using the setting and some of the themes from Human Revolution, I could actually get onboard. Trans-humanism is a fascinating subject, and Eidos Montreal did a pretty good job in creating their near-future dystopia, but I fret that it may devolve into some horrible action-packed spectacle more reminiscent of Human Revolution's boss battles rather than the title's more thought-provoking mo??ments??.

It was a fantastic game, but that didn't stop gamers getting incredibly angry over one small portion of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The overwh?elming conversation surrounding Eidos' game concerned the boss battles and how bad they were, something that Eidos has finally felt the need to admit.

"The problem was not the supplier, it was what we did with them," said producer David Anafossi. "The boss fights were too much for the team to do internally in the time we had. We totally underestimated the effort to do that correctly. We had to work with an external supplier with that, but the design and everything is from the team at Eidos Montr??eal.

"We knew that it would be a weakness for the game, that we had to make a compromise to deliver it [on] two levels. First, the boss fights were forced, which is not the Deus Ex experience. Second, there is no mix [of] solutions to tackle the boss fights, which is not Deus Ex either. We knew that b?efore th?e release of the game, but there had to be some compromise. It [was] our decision."

I still think the boss fights were absolutely fine and that people were just getting angry for the sake of it, but there you go. Hopefully this is validation for the Deus Ex "fans" who were determined to hate it from the get-g?o because it wasn't an identical clone of the original game (which they also would have hated).

Destructoid's Extra Life marathon went spectacularly well with the community raising $6909.16, surpassing all previous years totals. On top of giving away ridiculous amounts of prizes from some generous sponsors, we also got to share in some moments that will live in Destructoid history forever, especially since it's in GIF format.?? One thing is for sure, we couldn't have gotten to that amount without our fantastic community's help. You are amazing!

In this video, we're guided through parts of "The Missing Link," an October-bound add-on for Deus Ex Human Revolution. Described as being five hours worth of content in which Adam is trapped on a cargo ship, this expansion also includes upgrades to the lighting system and adds weather eff?ects.

Though I've seen numerous reports of people maxing out their augments, a move that defeats the purpose of having a specific play style, I do appreciate how this DLC provides an opportunity to potentially choose an al??ternate upgrade route. Not all of us are XP-grinding fiends, after all.

Good news, everyone! The upcoming DLC for Deus Ex: Human Revolution -- The Missing Link, is being made completely in-house. There will be a boss battle, but Grip Entertainment aren't having anything to do with it. It will take into account the v??ariety of ways players approach combat so you won't have to run about throwing grenades while hoping for the best. Speaking with Eurogamer, The Missing Link's producer, Marc-Andre Dufort promised that the boss fight will be less frustrating.

You can actually not kill the boss. You can do a non lethal takedown on him. And you can kill him from afar. You can even kill him without him seeing you. It?'s more of? a bigger challenge than a standard boss fight like we have in many games.

Dufort acknowledged that the main game's boss battles were a problem for some players. But ??he glossed over the main issue.

I was playing m?ore of a mixed stealth and combat style, so I had some good weapons in my inventory, I didn't have a lot of trouble dealing with it. No, I didn't get any big frustrations dealing with them. But I can understand people playing more stealth style having some frustra?tion dealing with those bosses.

It's all well and good for boss battles to be less frustrating if you take a more combat focused route. But when they completely ignore all the other play styles that's plain shitty design. It's in total opposition to the freedom we have throughout the rest of the game. It's great that The Missing Link won't be cripple??d in such a fashion, but it's a shame the main game remains marred by the shoddy efforts of Grip.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released last month, but people are still banging on about the boss fights. The latest revelation in the BOSSAGEDDON saga is that the fights weren't developed by Eidos Montreal, having instead be??en outsourced to G.R.I.P.

Interestingly, this is not a new announcement. A developer diary quietly explained all this last month, but nobody took any notice. In the video, it's stated quite clearly that G.R.I.P was handling the boss battles, with no explanation given as to why. However, the fact that G.R.I.P's boss said he wasn't familiar with Deus Ex ??because he's a "shooter guy" goes some way to explaining the action-he??avy fight scenes.

I still don't have a problem with the fights and think that people complaining about their steal??th characters being "unable" to fight are being really histrionic. The aug?mentations aren't that dramatic, and the boss battles had a place in the story.

Still, for those who hated them, this m??ight prove to be a bit of vindication.

[Update: I've been informed that the ads weren't "patched in" via?? any new update. The functionality was always there and it just seems that it's recently started throwing the ads out there.]

In a move that can be filed under "Kind Of Sleazy," a new update for Deus Ex: Human Revolution has snuck in commercials for the upcoming Star Wars Blu-r??ay release. Loading screens now promote Lucas' latest attempt to ruin his life's work, which is charming.

Seriously, I think it's a little rich to sneak ads into a $50 product, especially when fans are still waiting for an update that actually fixes problems with said product. Smuggling the a??dverts into a game once money's ch??anged hands is pretty damn tacky, to say the least.

With dynamic in-game billboards and a proven ability to pop ads into loading screens, this is something that looks set to continue. That must be why Eidos Montreal told us all to play the PC version. That's where the Benjamins are!

[Thanks, Charrr!]

If Feral doesn't immediately sound familiar, know that this studio has worked on a few notable Mac releases in the past, like Borderlands, BioShock, Rome: Total War, and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. I thought that Nixxes Software did an admirable job with the PC version of Human Revolution, so here's hoping Mac ?players get the same level of care.

Right now, Amazon is selling the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution at the $34.99 sweet spot. Those determined to play the title on PC aren't getting quite as nice a deal, with digital copies going for $39.99. Still, that's ten extra ?bucks you could spend on t?acos.

It seems like Human Revolution will be an easy Game of the Year contender, even with some of 2011's most promising still unreleased. There were a few ways this could have gone down, and to be honest, a month ago I wasn't convinced Deus Ex fans would come ??away from it feeling mos??tly satisfied.

Adam Jensen, the brooding, sunglasses loving, augmented bad ass from Deus Ex: Human Revolution is probably doing a little dance right now. Eidos-Montreal's first game, which came out late last m?onth, shipped 2 million units in North America, Europe and PA??L territories.

That's not too shabby, but since it's a prequel to one of the most beloved PC games of all time it's hardly a surprise. It helps that it was pretty damn good to boot. If you haven't had enough cyberpunk action don't fret. The recently announced DLC, Missing Link, will be available next month.

Dubbed "The Missing Link," it will fill in three days of the main storyline in which Adam is trapped on a freighter with his augmentations left disabled.

New environments and characters are promised, and it sounds like you'll have the opportunity to (at least temporarily) rebuild Adam's augments. I think most of us could use an excuse to try a different loadout without starting a bra??nd new save?? file from the beginning.

Platforms and price points haven't been divu??lged, but the post says this content will drop in October.

GameStop has apologized to consumers for the removal of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from store shelves?, an act committed after discovering OnLive codes contained within the PC version's box. However, it is still sticking by its boycott, apparently only sorry that it d?idn't know about the OnLive codes sooner.

"We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor's offer," stated an email to DX:HR customers. "We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the p??ublisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.

"For yo?ur inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience."

Originally, GameStop was just yanking the codes from the box before it decided to stop selling the game completely. The store's actions created a wave of backlash from gamers, as one mig?ht expect. I've defended GameStop as a used game purveyor before, but this little stunt really was a dickbag move.

OnLive partnered with Square Enix for a pretty cool promotion for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Buy a retail copy of the game for PC, and you'll get a free cloud-based version of the game that you can play using the OnLive service. Unless, of course, you purchased Human Revolution from GameStop.

GameSpy has confirmed that the mega-retailer has asked its stores to intentionally remove the OnLive coupon from boxed copies of Human Revolution. This comes after reports from a handful of customers who noted that their new games were opened, and the?? codes were missing.

"Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge," said GameStop public relations rep?resen?tative Beth Sharum, "and we did pull and discard these coupons."

Just... wow. While it's understandable that GameStop might feel threatened by OnLive and this promotion, they make no bones about not looking out for their customers first in this case. Which is unfortunate, since they'd already have pocketed the $49.99 for Human Revolution, and now they're? simply making themselves out to look like bullies.

Whether this will truly affect GameStop's bottom line is questionable; the retailer is such a monste?r, and its customer base so wide and varied, that this may blow over without noise beyond the enthusiast gaming press. But as a gamer (and one who doesn't even buy physical PC games from the retailer), I'm seriousl?y questioning supporting GameStop's business in the future after a stunt like this.

It should be noted that some GameStop customers are reporting that? the code was included with their copy of the game. This isn't shocking, considering the directive came from above and was sent down to the store level. It's possible that a number of employees were either dismissive of the request, or simply too lazy to foll?ow through. Having worked for the retailer for many years in a past life, either of those two scenarios seem likely.

If you buy a retail version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC, you won't actually need the disc in order to play it. In fact, you won't need any??thing at all, because the copies come packaged with a free code for the OnLive version.

"Gamers get the best of both worlds -- a physical copy for their home PC and an OnLive cloud gaming copy for instant-play anywhere on an HDTV, PC, Mac, and soon iPad and Android tablets," said OnLive president Steve Perlman said. "Having the option of local or cloud gaming provides unprecedented value and convenience that has never before been available?? for high-performance AAA titles."

It's a pretty cool offer, and a very smart way of getting more people to check out the cloud-based gaming service. Besides which, free? is free, so this is nothing to snort at.

If you have not yet been introduced to Tish, now is your chance to say hello. She has a very small (non spoilery) role in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and she's ... well ... let's just say that her characterization has a little something of the fifties about it.

It really is a fantastic game, but I'm not sure how Eidos M?ontreal expected this little thing to go unnoticed.

As we've learned recently, augmenting yourself à la Deus Ex: Human Revolution isn't a thing you should do. The technology isn't there for that yet. You could do it yourself, but things could get messy. Odds are you'd be ostracized for it as well. Really not ??a good thing.

In lieu of ruining your life at an early age with physical enhancements that won't work nearly as well as you think they will, Musterbrand is offering a new line of Deus Ex branded apparel. While not as cool as bionic arms, it isn't terrible. There's an array of different t-s?hirts branded with the games various corporations, but the show piece here is Adam Jensen's tr??ench coat. I wish I was cool enough to wear it.

In the year 2027, mankind is about to enter a new era of self-propagated evolution. Technology that blends man ?and machine has allowed "augmented" humans to run faster, think quicker, grow stronger, and rise above their genetics to be the person they want to be -- provided they have a lot of money and don't mind requiring lifelo?ng medication to ensure their bodies don't reject the enhancements.

Oh, and they'll have to endure contempt from everybody who isn't like them, fear growing civil unrest, and live in a worl??d rife with unchecked corporate power and corrupt political machinations.

Yes, the world of Deus Ex: Human Revolution ??is a miserable one. However, you won't want it to end.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC [reviewed], PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: Eidos Montreal
Publisher: Square Enix
To be released: August 23, 2011
MSRP: $59.99 (PS3, 360) / $49.99 (PC)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution tells the story of Adam Jensen, head of security at Sarif Industries, an American corporation making huge strides in augmentation technology. However, not all of humanity is appreciative of Sarif's dabbling in human progress, and after a group of mercenaries attacks the company headquarters, Jensen is mortally wounded. He doesn't quite die, however, becoming both the beneficiary and victim of his own company's latest step forward in human mod??ification. He returns to the world of the living better than he ever was, but that doesn't mean he has to be happy about it. After all, he never asked for this.

Thus the scene is set for a game that travels around the world, weaving social commentary and philosophy on the nature of transhumanism throughout a tale that touches on corporate espionage, global conspiracy, and well-intentioned extremism. As well as living up to the sacred legacy kickstarted by the original Deus Ex, Human Revolution's narrative takes the very best of Metal Gear Solid, merrily pinches elements from Blade Runner, and adds its own unique blend of fascinating characters and satisf??ying plot twists. It is, in short, one of the most intriguingly written, thematically ambitious games I have ever played.

In no small part does Human Revolution owe its narrative success to an absorbing atmosphere. This crapsack world, driven by stunning advances in technology but stifled by class conflict and growing social resentment, is an absolute joy to navigate despite being so utterly depressing. From the tightly designed action stages to the overwhelming hub maps, there's a consistency to the game's world that one only rarely sees, and everything from interactive newspapers, hacked emails and conversations between non-player characters creates a compelling ambiance for a world that is hard to want to leave. It's most certainly a world nobody in their right mind would ever want to live in, but it's an intoxicating place to visit.

Human Revolution is mindful of the huge weight that the Deus Ex name carries, and I am thrilled to report that it lives up to the daunting demands that such a pedigree entails. As with the original classic, this is a game designed to let you play it your way, with a variety of upgradable augmentations to create an Adam Jensen that suits your personal idiom. Whether you want to be stealthy or aggressive, lethal or merciful, you have the tools to do the job. The game breaks itself into four very distinct play styles, all designed to bleed into each other and provide players with a variety of options and backup plans. The styles are combat, hackin?g, stealth, and social, with each one deserving of its own review.

Combat is a unique blend of first-person and third-person gameplay, where forward-thinking and pragmatic actions are rewarded. While there is a run-and-gun option in the first-person perspective, such activity would be suicide. Even when one fully upgrades their ability to absorb dam??age, Jensen is far from immortal and will drop in seconds when exposed to gunfire. With a right-click (or shoulder button press), however, Jensen will stick to a wall and the camera will shift to a third-person perspective. This is?? not only crucial for stealthy play, it also gives a great vantage point in what can become a very intense cover-based shooter. Success in combat isn't just determined by picking a bit of cover and opening fire, however -- the enemy A.I. is some of the most aggressive and adaptive I've seen, with opponents more than happy to flank, initiate pincer attackers, and even retreat to their own cover when needed.

Success in combat is determined by careful planning. Securing an exit should things go wrong, choosing (and changing) advantageous positions, and identifying which target to fire upon first, as well as which weapons to use, are crucial. This is not a game that just lets you open fire and trust in your reflexes; this is a game in which strategy is just as important as skill. Adam Jensen may be an augmented human, but he is still a human, and the game never lets you forget it.

Stealth is simply superb, and players who wish to remain subtle will find that the game is perfectly tailored to their secret-agent fantasies. The third-person viewpoint in cover gives players an excellent view of the surrounding area and allows them to memorize enemy movement patterns without becoming exposed. Even with this benefit, however, stealth is no cakewalk. Enemies don't just march along patrol routes, o?blivious to their surroundings. They love to intermittently walk backwards, or stop at crossro?ads in corridors to check all available directions. Sometimes players only get a brief window of opportunity in which they can act, and failure can mean a swift death unless there's a good place to hide.

This said, the enemy A.I. isn't at a genius level, and can be broken. While opposing soldiers are formidable foes in battle, they can be exploited in ways that sometimes take the sting out of the immersion. For instance, they can very happily stand in front of air vents while you're crouched inside and allow themselves to be shot to death. Sometimes they'll stand back and fire into the vent, or toss grenades in there, but other times they'll be sitting ducks. For the most part, stealth and combat can be tense, but there are those moments where the game ?can ??be twisted in unscrupulous ways.

Whether players choose to be stealthy or violent, they will find that the "Takedown" ability is a lifesaver. When Adam gets close to an enemy, he can instantly neutralize him with a single keystroke. The camera will switch to third-person and Jensen will take down an opponent with a beautiful, empowering combat animation. Simply pressing the "Q" key will see Adam knock an enemy unconscious, whereas keeping it held will cause him to extend some vicious blades from his arm and put the poor victim away permanently. Do not think that this skill is a game-breaker, however. Adam can only perform takedowns if he has at least one full energy bar, and only the first bar ever recharges automatically (others need to be refilled by consumable items). Furthermore, takedowns always make noise (with lethal ones being louder)?? and will alert nearby enemies. Unless Adam can drag the body to a hiding place and make a daring escape, alarm bells will ring pretty quickly.

Hacking is by far one of the most essential elements of the game, and it's highly ??recommended that hack augmentations are equipped early. ??Not only does hacking net significant amounts of XP (used to obtain "Praxis" kits, which buy new augmentations) and cash, it also unlocks doors to vital equipment and plot-sensitive areas, rewards players with heaps of cool information and Easter eggs, and eliminates various security measures such as lasers, alarms, cameras and turrets.

The hacking system is a surprisingly en?joyable minigame in which you capture various nodes on a map, with the goal being to reach a green sphere that cracks the network. Along the way, there are special nodes that bestow extra benefits such as XP and cash bonuses, or make the network easier to complete. However, each node captured has a chance to alert the network, which will begin a countdown that ends with the hacker getting booted. Hackers can also fortify nodes to slow down network traces, and use collectible software to bolster their efforts -- notably the "Stop" worm that temporarily halts network tracing and the "Nuke" virus that instantly captures a node without the threat of detection. Despite the initial sense of intimidation that the hacking system can radiate, it's a deceptively simple game that rewards forward thinking, careful planning, and useful augmentations.

The only downside to the hacking is that various cool skills, such as the ability to control enemy turrets and robots, aren't all that useful. Their applicable uses in the? game are minimal due to the limited number of computers that actually control such items, and the sheer effort it takes to reach them (chances are good that if you got to a security computer that controls robots, you've either already neutralized the enemies that the robot could have attacked, or have no need to re-enter the area it patrols). One can safely save their Praxis kits and ignore the turret/robot augments, but other hacking upgrades are damn near vital.

Finally, we have the social gameplay. This aspect is presented as a variety of "Social Boss Battles" in which Jensen must verbally outwit an opponent in a debate. This represents one of the game's most accomplished innovations, and also its biggest missed opportunity. In short, these conversational fights are incredibly well done, with the player needing to anticipate which responses will work best against characters, using whatever they've learned about their personalities and how they react to Jensen's words. While the facial animations aren't quite on par with L.A. Noire, there's still a lot to be gleaned from seeing how a character's expression changes throughout a conversation, and how stressed or angry they become with provocative statements. Each of these sequences is engaging and unique, just as accomplished as anything found in RPGs like Mass Effect.

Unfortunately, these moments are also quite easy. The game's one social augmentation, which allows players to better read opponents and release pheromones to influence their reactions, is simply not needed. I was able to win every social boss battle in the game without using the ability; it's not difficult at all to see which responses will work against the strongly designed personalities Jensen encounters. In fact, while replaying the game's first debate, I tried to fail and still ended up succ?eeding. Furthermore, these boss fights are simply too rare. While I appreciate tha?t Eidos Montreal probably didn't want to bog the game down with too much conversation, I felt they really could have added a few more of these sequences and lost nothing.

As previously stated, all of these gameplay types are enhanced with a variety of augmentations. Over the course of the game, it's possible to obtain almost all of them, although the order in which they are claimed is entirely up to the player, and they vary in usefulness from essential to practically pointless. With well-chosen augments, Jensen will be able to sprint longer, take extra damage, hack more efficiently, jump from tall buildings without dying, and punch through walls. There are some really cool powers, but there are duff ones as well. The Typhoon, for example, sends out a 360-degree shockwave that kills anything caught in its radius. However, due to it being suicidal to get surrounded by enemies, the practical application of such an ability is negligible at best. You'd have to go out of your way to set up a situation where it'd be needed, and there's always a better strategy on offer. Same goes for the ability to perform takedowns on two enemies at once. While it sounds great in theory -- and I should note, the animations are awesome -- it's very rare to have two enemies close enough together for it to work, and even rarer for such a takedown to be a sensible tactic.

I would rather have had several of these worthless augmentations nixed in ??order for deeper enhancements to others. The cloaking system, the ability to see through walls, and the social abilities could have had a lot more done with them, and Eidos could have come up with additional practical uses for the more alluring powers. As it stands, the game very clearly favors players with certain abilities -- chiefly, hacking skills, high jumps, extra lifting strength and the power to fall from great heights. With these skills unlocked as soon as possible, there is nowhere that Adam cannot explore, whereas specializing in other augmentations early on will cause the player to miss out on several worthwhile areas.

One cannot be too upset by this, however, considering the excellent uses of the truly worthwhile powers. As explained earlier, it should never be forgotten that Jensen is a human, one who can die very easily when handled without care, but players will still feel like a cut above their human inferiors when they can smash through a wall and break ?the neck of the poor goon standing on the other side. It's just one of those things that never gets old.

There's no question about Human Revolution's sheer volume of content. There's lots to see, even more to do, and multiple ways of enjoying both. While one could theoretically blast through Human Revolution in eight or ten hours, there's much, much more to be getting on with. City-based hub areas contain side quests that are as lengthy and intricate as any of the mandatory tasks. I managed to spend a whole five hours simply wandering around the Detroit hub, soaking in the sights, exploring?? every square inch, listening to enthralling NPC conversations, and beating all the quests.

What truly impresses isn't so much the scale of the game, but its staggering consistency of quality. Every quest is a compelling story; every level is beautifully, ingeniously designed; and not once does the game ever become dull or lose its pacing. The only notable issues are small and forgettable -- sometimes an NPC's dialog won't sync with its mouth properly, and on the Xbox 360, earning Achievements causes the game to stutter temporarily. The PC version's biggest issue is that cutscenes are very badly compressed; otherwise it's a gorgeous game with mouse and keyboard controls that feel intuitive and surprisingly well-adapted to stealth-based gameplay. Of ??course, hacking's also a lot ??easier when one doesn't use a gamepad.

Whether you go for console or PC, however, you will be impressed with the visuals. The art direction, with its heavy focus on shades of gold and contrasting black, makes for a game that looks like none other, and the impressive animations, finely detailed environments, and stylish augmentation effects only seal the deal. This is a beautiful videogame, and that beauty is carried over into the sound. Voice acting is solid (though one or two black characters seem alarmingly close to caricatures), explosi?ons and weapon effects feel heavy and impactful, and the musical score is sublime. If you're looking for a game with production values, then Eidos Montreal has delivered more than you could have bargained for.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, like its augmented hero, is a step above its mundane peers. With its flowing, open approach to mission structure, thoroughly engrossing story and gorgeous visuals, this is the kind of game that all others should strive to be. While there are some elements that don't feel quite as developed as they should have been, and augmentation is more Hobson's choice than true choice, Human Revolution provides a level of quality that only the most adamant cynic could fail to be impressed by. More importantly, it is everything a fan of Deus Ex could want in a game, and it effortlessly embraces the?? arduous task of living up to the legacy, standing next to its 2000 predecessor and holding its head up in pride.

This game is truly deserving of the name Deus Ex. In fact, there's no other name it could have had.

Square Enix has been going all out in their recent ad campaign for the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Earlier in the summer you could see a lot of these videos on their viral marketing website for the fictional Sarif Industries, but i?t appears to have been 'hacked' by the 'Purity First' terrorist group, and we apparently missed it... by about three weeks.

I'm really impressed by the dedication that Square Enix has to the marketing of this project, and the eerie parallels to the real world are both disturbing and exciting. In addition to the video series, the Sarif Industries website has been posting links to real cybernetics developments like an artificial hand that can feel, powering cybernetics with the mind, and a bionic eye that could restore vision. The fact that this stuff really exists and these are issues that we may have to deal with in our lifetimes has me more than a little excited to see how Deus Ex: Human Revolution will handle them.

[Thanks Miles!]

Deus Ex: Human Revolution might not be a Japanese game, but sure as hell it's coming to Japan, if Square Enix has anything to say about it. However, it won't be entering the country unscathed. Its content will need a couple of nips and tucks before it can clear a "Z" rating from CERO, Japan's ratings board. For the curious, a "Z" would st??ick at the high end of the?? ESRB's "M" range, up to an "AO".

As for the content to be cut, a cutscene that shows a character's "organs being exposed" will be edited, and a "sexual object" will be removed from one of the game's levels. Japanese censorship laws ban that sick filth, so it's got to go.

On the plus side, the game will be shipping with all of the preorder DLC, additional missions, and weapons already unlocked. The PS3 version will also have the English voice track available. Would-be reverse importers should note that all the text will in ?Japanese.

I have to wonder what the "sexual object" being remov??ed is. This demands some kind of comparison!
