Developer Gameloft has announced some big changes for Disney Speedstorm and its Golden Pa?ss, and they've quickly proven unpopular with players. So much so that several are threatening to stop playing.

As with most free-to-play games, Disney Speedstorm has its own battle pass, dubbed the Golden Pass, with a new one introduced every season. While you can earn some of the Golden Pass' content for free, you can purchase a premium Golden Pass with real money or with Tokens (one of the in-game currencies). In a community blog post from April 9, Gameloft explained how it wants to "make our Golden Passes more engaging and faster ?to complete ??for players" and allow players to unlock more rewards.

//twitter.com/povpercabeth/status/1777703618679902541

However, Gameloft's strategy for this is by splitting seasons in two and giving each half its own Golden? Pass. Both Golden Passes will sport 100 tiers of content instead of 50 (though Gameloft has said unlocking rewards will be faster) and you'll no longer be able to buy the premium Golden Passes with Tokens; you'll have to spend $9.99. Gameloft will also sell special bundles for $19.99 for each Golden Pass that include the first 15 tiers.

This isn't the only monetization Gameloft is adding to Disney Speedstorm either. Starting from Season 7 (which is scheduled to begin on April 17), there'll be new Tournaments you can participate in to unlock content from older seasons. On the surface, that's not a bad feature, but the caveat is you can only play in Tournaments four times a day... unless you purchase a Vault Pass for $7.99, which has its own track of free and premium rewards. So, going forward, Disney Speedstorm will essentiall?y have three different battle passes.

Initial reactions on X (formerly Twitter) were overwhelmingly negative. Users like beth_x3 and Durand Lewis are upset because they were saving up tokens to spend on a Golden Pass, and now they can't do that. One user, gknasc1903, outright called Gameloft "thieves" since they just spent money on purchasing tokens, with both them and GraficKontent asking for refunds on the tokens.

//twitter.com/tompain100/status/1777705226725650508

Things are no better on the Disney Speedstorm subreddit. Several of the top threads at the moment consist of players complaining about the changes. One of the pinned threads, aside from the aforementioned community blog post, asks players to boycott the battle passes since, if you want all the content on offer, you're forking over roughly $28 every season. Elsewhere, players like ArfenZard bemoan how these changes may have finally killed ?their interest in playing: "I'm never gonna fork out actual cash for something that has been directly taken away from me and anyone who does is actively paying to help the demise of the game."

Disgruntled fans have also taken to Steam to leave negative reviews. "Predatory monetization that gets worse with every season while the bugs and other issues just multiply and get ignored. It's not even mediocre anymore, it's just bad," reads one by Happimess. Reviews by Flare Kuraha and Busty Crumbhole admit the gameplay itself ??is perfectly solid, but the monetization makes it impossible to recommend.

Could these changes be the deathknell for Disney Speedstorm? It's arguably too soon to say but, if data from Steam Charts is anything to go by, the game's been bleeding players since November 2023. Further monetization is unlikely to attract new players, especially if they see all these negative comments, and if player counts are similar across other platforms, then Disney Speedstorm's future is looking awfully grim.

The be???st Disney games honor the source material and are exciting to play for all ages. From kart racing, to farming, to platforming, there's a surprising amount of variety. Here are the best Disney games you can play in 2023.

[Note: I'm including games you can easily access on modern platforms. Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to get a copy of Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure in 2023. Otherwise, I'd put it on the list!]

Cars 3 Driven To Win is a surprisingly good kart game.

Cars 3: Driven to Win

Cars 3: Driven to Win takes the Mario Kart approach and makes for a surprisingly good Disney racing game. You're driving through locations from the film, and trying to triumph in the race, items include??d. There's a wide variety of characters to drive as, including Lightning, Cruz Ramirez, and even the unconventional Mater.

There's also a decent dr?ifting and boosting system in place in the game, making it feel high-speed.

Disney's Aladdin 16-bit

Disney’s Aladdin

Disney's Aladdin took "one jump ahead" to the platforming genre with fun platforming levels, groundbreaking 2D roto-scoping animation, and a great recreation of the desert city Agrabah in game form. This game's tough, however, so I'd recommend getting the Disney Classic Games Collection.

It has the function to rewind and even does a perfect playthrough for you. For the latter feature, you can also jump into the game whenever you'd like. The collection can switch between the Genesis and Super Ninten??do versions of the game too.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is one of the best Disney games you can play in 2023

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Disney Dreamlight Valley is an absolute joy for any fan of the House of Mouse. In this relaxing Animal Crossing-like experience, you're rebuilding a town, as well as bringing back old and new Disney characters to the settlement. It's quite satis?fying when the town gets busier and busier.

You'll also be cooking a bunch of recipes from the ingredients you gro??w and collect from around the world. You'll need to have some patience too in this game with the farming elements!

Disney Infinity on PC is one of the best Disney games from how much there is included.

Disney Infinity on Steam

What once was a toys-to-life game (remember those?), Disney Infinity has become a comprehensive package on Steam. You can get all the characters and campaigns through the Gold Collection on Valve's client. You won't need a figure. Within the game are some charming levels, simple Lego-like beat-em-up sections you can play with your family, and great production values all around. For example, in Disney Infinity 1.0, you can explore the Caribbean on a pirate ship.

You can't share your creations online, but the?re's a pretty awesome toolset for making your own levels as well.

Disney Speedstorm is one of the best Disney games right now

Disney Speedstorm

Disney Princesses don't have to wait for their "prince to come." Instead, they can race around all manner of landmarks throughout the animation studio's history. From Mulan's Great Walls of China to Aladdin's Agrabah, there are exciting ?places t??o explore on your kart.

The action's intense, the driving??'s surprisingly smooth? for a tie-in game like this, and the graphics are top-notch. I personally love that each item you use has a second ability from holding down the corresponding button.

The problem is that it's free-to-play and has a lot of barriers in place to unlock your favorite characters. Still, the game itself is thrilling to play; it's worth the headaches. Read my review for more information.

DuckTales is a classic Capcom game
Image via Capcom

DuckTales

Available through The Disney Afternoon Collection, you ca??n play this platforming classic in 2023. You're using Scrooge's cane as a pogo stick, bumping enemies. The level design is immaculate.

The music is also phenomenal, especially the Moon level's theme, which cover artists still love to highlight to this day. Like Aladdin's port to modern systems, you can re??wind the game as well, making this game more accessible to modern players?. It might be an NES game, but you might go quackers over it.

"Borrowing a page from Mega Man with its freeing world selection system, the maps themselves are full of twists, turns, alternate paths, and secret areas," Chris Carter says in his Destructoid review for The Disney Afternoon Collection. "Like most of the Afternoon Collection, it stands on its own two feet, free ??of the shackles of nostalgia?."

Kingdom Hearts is an awesome game!
Image via Square Enix and Disney

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX

If you know me, this selection isn't a surprise at all. Kingdom Hearts is near and dear to my heart. The characters are relatable, the storyline is surprisingly deep, and the action RPG combat system keeps me coming back over and over. I've always found it wonderful how the magical worlds of Disney blend with the Final Fantasy-esque storyline and combat.

Mickey flips around like Star Wars' Yoda and uses a golden keyblade, while Final Fantasy X's tough Auron takes on Hercules' Cerberus in the Underworld alongside our heroes Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Kingdom Hearts is bonkers, and I'm here for it. The combat's also top of the line with some stunning abilities at Sora's disposal like Sonic ?Blade and Ragnarok. The bosses, for the most part, are also well-designed and will challenge you.

It's been said many times, but the fusion of Disney and Square Enix properties shouldn't work. And yet, it's a perfect match. Please get on the gummi ship and take a journey into the wacky chaos, which is the Kingdom Hearts series.

The kart racing genre is known for many mediocre franchise tie-in titles. NASCAR, DreamWorks, and even Garfield have entered the party with varying results. Sonic and Crash are arguably the only two that can somewhat rival Mario and his friends. Disney Speedstorm is on the cusp of that.

Disney Speedstorm hits and adds some new mechanics and twists to the genre. While the overall game is i?mpressive, it will be hard for many to ignore the microtransactions that poison the sweet apple that??'s this game (expect many Disney references, you have been warned).

"One Jump Ahead" of Mario Kart, in some ways

Disney Speedstorm is a refreshing addition to the kart racing genre. It brings all of these beloved Disney characters together, like Aladd?in and Jack Sparro?w, but also adds some awesome gameplay mechanics to the format. The Disney characters aren't the only attraction, unlike other tie-in games that live off the property's name and do the bare minimum.

One of the thrilling mechanics is the charged skill system. When you pick up an item, there are two variations of moves you can pull off. For example, with a mine, you can throw it in front of you or hold the item button to create an explosion in your near vicinity. This adds more of an element of strategy to the game. I hope Nintendo takes notes as I find the items in the Mario Kart series, like the banana and bomb??s, a bit repetitiv??e and old.

There's also a slight tang of the Burnout series in Disney Speedstorm, as you can ram other players into the walls. I'm surprised such a violent move can be found in a game inspired by the House of Mouse. Additionally, you can use a nitro boost to speed yourself up, like in Team Sonic Racing and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.

These mechanics truly add to the kart racing e?xperience. "For the First Tim??e in Forever," we're actually seeing some innovation within a tired genre.

A great start to the action but...

With Gameloft's experience with the Asphalt series, it's no surprise that Disney Speedstorm feels great to control. While the kart does move a little slower than I'd like, drifting around is a dream. Boosting also feels powerful as you work your way through the hills of the Steamboat Willie-inspired The Silver Screen track and around the halls of Monster's Inc.'s Factory.

I personally love that each character has their own unique item as well. Donald lays out fists around him as he gets angry, while Aladdin rides his magic carpet across the stage. Jafar also bursts fire from his scepter. It makes ea?ch character unique and makes me want to try out everyone on the roster.

I'm happy to report that the game runs smoothly on both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The tracks look gorgeous on Sony's latest system, and while the Nintendo Switch does have a few rare hiccups here and there, Disney Speedstorm does run well on the hybrid system. It's also cross-play and cross-save compatible, so you can take the game any?where you'd like to ?go and play it with anyone you'd like.

Levelling up characters in Disney Speedstorm is a pain
Screenshot by Destructoid

Leveling up your character...

My main issue is that your characters need to be leveled up for better stats. For offline play, thankfully, this isn't a big issue. However, your success in the single-pl??ayer Season Tour mode depends on your character's top speed, acceleration, handling, boost, and combat. You won't be on an equal playing field at points. Mulan might be too slow to finish a race in the first place.

You'll need to get upgrade parts to level up your characters. Most of the time, I've been able to get them easily through unlocking them in the Season Tour mode and S??tarter Circuit. However, there have been points where I've had to g?rind for upgrade parts to proceed. It can be frustrating, and this is where the microtransactions rear their ugly head.

The good thing is that everyone is on a level playing field when you play the multiplayer mode. Your characters are automatically at Level 30, which is the regulated level of Regulated Multiplayer. The Ranked mode, however, does depend ?on your character's stats, so keep that in mind. It does feel pay-to-win in this instance.

There are so many microtransactions!

Like The Goofy Movie with Goofy and Max, you'll need to be "I2I" with the micro-transactions in thi?s game. There are so many to keep count of that it ca??n be overwhelming. Here's an explanation of each of them:

  • Tokens - This is the main currency used towards character tokens, vehicle parts, crew members, etc.
  • Multiplayer Coins - These are gained through finishing leaderboard events and doing well in ranked multiplayer. This is used for costumes and multiplayer boxes (loot boxes that give you random rewards).
  • Season Coins - This is the most common currency you'll earn through finishing races in the Season Tour and Starter Circuit modes.
  • Box Credits - These are credits that can be used for opening specifically marked boxes in the Shop.

Gameloft should have streamlined the microtransaction process to make the process clearer. There's also the Golden Pass and Collections level system to keep track of, which gives you character tokens, crew shards, and even mottos. It's a lot to take in and initially turned me off the game at first. With a family title like this, I bet kids are even more confused. Families would wish they'd have a "Friend Like Me" explaining this while playing Disney Speedstorm, I'm certain.

It can be irritating to miss out on your favorite characters like Stitch and Woody as well due to missing each season. You can get them from the Universal Box, but it's ridiculously difficult to get them. For example, to get Angel from Lilo & Stitch at the time of writing, there's a 0.98% chance of getting 1-3? racer shards from the Universal Box. You'll nee?d ten racer shards to get her.

Disney Speedstorm shows the Great Walls of China in Mulan track

Disney Speedstorm has so much potential though

It's so irritating that there's a bad micro-transaction system in Disney Speedstorm because I genuinely love this game. If it was released at $39.99 and had all of the characters, tracks, and content, it would be marked as one of t??he best kart racing g??ames out there.

There's a deep love of Disney behind each track design. You're maneuvering around plumes of fire in the Cave of Wonders before the lion opens its mouth, letting you out. Disney Speedstorm has a track based on Mulan that has you racing on the Great Walls of China Wipeout style, with the rockets?? from the avalanche scene becoming an obstacle later ?on.

In the Hercules stage, you're drifting around a gorgeous depiction of Mount Olympus ??as you're listening to a banging electron?ic remix of the film's opening song, "The Gospel Truth."

The tracks are also laid with fun obstacles and beautiful scenery inspired by the films we know and love. I especially like seeing the colorful and summer vibes of the Hawaii stage from Lilo & Stitch. It's just?? a shame that the game gets a little repetitive with a small selection of tracks currently.

If you're a Disney fan, you're going to see a lot of referen??ces. The music is a bit of a mixed bag with some fantastic remixes of tracks we've grown up with and then others that go overboard with the dubstep and techno beats.

Disney Speedstorm "Goes the Distance" and makes a rough landing

Disney Speedstorm is certainly "on a roll" with its electrifying stages and game design, but it's certainly not "undefeated." The confusing microtransactions pull it down and become an annoying distraction to what's great in this kart racer. While a love for the Disney product is certainly present in Disney Speedstorm, the??re ?are a few annoying aspects of the game to be mindful of.

Thankfully, you can play the game offline with all the characters unlocked. You can participate in the multiplayer modes, too, with a rotating selection of guest racers. As the game proceeds, we'll be getting new tracks and characters every two months, so there will be a regular stream of content incoming for Disney Speedstorm.

Gameloft has teased that Frozen and The Little Mermaid are a part of the Disney Speedstorm roadmap over the next four months. Frozen's Arendelle a??nd five new characters from the popu??lar animated franchise will appear this November.

Later on, four racers from The Little Mermaid will emerge to the surface in January. Additionally, four my??stery bonus characters will join mid-?season.

Disney Speedstorm just boosted out of the Early Access period and released its 1.0 version. This means that anyone can play the game under its free-to-play model. It's available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. There's also crossplay and cross-play functionality.

//twitter.com/SpeedstormGame/status/1707787320932594076

To help celebrate the launch, Gameloft announced its upcoming roadmap. We know that the envi??ronments from the undersea Atlantica and frozen tundra around Arendelle will emerge as two locations players will race around in.

The Disney Speedstorm roadmap also teases that new con?tent?? will be released every two months.

As part of Season 4 of the game, Disney fans can now race as Aladdin, Genie, Jasmine, and even Jafar. Four bonus characters, including Hades and Gaston, w??ill be joining the game mid-season as well. The other two are a mystery right now.

So far, these are the Disney properties included in the game so far:

  • Mickey and friends
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Hercules
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Mulan
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • The Jungle Book
  • Monster's Inc
  • Toy Story
  • Aladdin

Perhaps one day, Gameloft will include Cars' Radiator Springs and 101 Dalmatians' London as race tracks in the future.

Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, and the villain Jafar are joining Disney Speedstorm Season 4 as announced by the official Twitter page over the past week. They'll be available through the Golden Pass, which is the game's version of a "battle pass." This news comes just before the game's official 1.0 launch on September 28. The kart race??r's free-to-play for the first time on that date.

So yes, the 1992 film Aladdin is finally represented in Disney Speedstorm. Similar to other seasons of the game, we'll likely get decals, mottos, and other rewards based on the film. The DisInsider also expects a track based on the IP for Disney Speedstorm Season 4. Cave of Wonders or Agrabah, anyone?

//twitter.com/SpeedstormGame/status/1702351503929872475

No ?gameplay has been shown for these characters. However, as the publisher Gameloft approaches the new season, it will likely give us a tease of what's to come in future tweets and announcements. We have no official release date for Season 4 as of the time of writing. It may fall on September 28 to coincide with the game's launch.

Disney Speedstorm Season 3 focused on another classic animated film Lilo & Stitch. Players can race around H??awaii as Stitch,?? Lilo, Angel, Gantu, and Jumba.

The Disney Speedstorm Founder's Packs are going away soon

You can purchase early access to Disney Speedstorm by grabbing one of the Founder's Packs for the game. However, it might be w?orth just waiting for the official release just under two weeks away.

Many magical worlds to draw from

The wonderful world of Disney has many different locations throughout a century of history, and some memorable Disney Speedstorm tracks that can be made from them. We already have the legendary Steamboat Willie cartoon, Hercules' Olympus, and Mulan's China included in the kart racer. However, there are many other films that developer Gameloft can draw from. Here are some amazing Disney locations that would fit as perfect Disney Speedstorm tracks.

101 Dalmatians - London

[caption id="attachment_376403" align="alignnone" width="1200"]101 Dalmatians London Screenshot via Walt?? Disney Studios' YouTube Channel[/caption]

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has already proved London can be a spectacular location for a track, so it would be great to see Disney Speedstorm's take on it. You can have the bustling city become an?? obstacle itself with double-decker buses and black London cabs in the way. With a watercolor art style over the city's landscape, it could really pop as you gaze at the red phone boxes, Buckingham Palace, and, of course, Elizabeth Tower (commonly but incorrectly known as Big Ben, which is actually the bell inside). You could also see the Dalmatians scurrying down the sidewalks as Cruella De Vil's henchmen chase after them. There's a lot you could do with this British city as your inspiration.

Aladdin - Agrabah

[caption id="attachment_376346" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Agrabah Disney Speedstorm Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

The beautiful city of Agrabah would look fantastic in Disney Speedstorm as a track. You could have our favorite Disney characters toiling through the sand, jumping on bumpy desert land, and then sweeping into the busy market streets of the city. The glorious palace would gleam in the sunlight. It would likely look much better than the above picture from Kingdom Hearts. The music of this track could be amazing too with electronic remixes of "One Jump Ahead?," "Prince Ali," and "A Whole New World."

Cars - Radiator Springs

[caption id="attachment_376350" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Radiator Springs Disney Speedstorm Screenshot via Pixar Cars' ??YouTube Channel[/caption]

It's astonishing that neither a Radiator Springs track nor a Cars character is featured in Disney Speedstorm. It makes so much sense. Going down the main street of Radiator Springs would be a thrill for fans of the series as you see the Route 66 town come to life. There's also the drift-heavy side track that Lightning trains at in the original film. You'll learn quickly you have to drift right to go left, to reference the film. The mountainous setting would look stunning to players, making it one of the best Disney Speedstorm tracks you could think of.

Coco - Land of the Dead

[caption id="attachment_375974" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Coco Land of the Dead Image via Disney[/caption]

Coco's Land of the Dead would make for a stunning Disney Speedstorm track. You have gorgeous Mexican imagery and architecture to draw from. This would be a rare track that's set during the night, making the colorful lighting truly stand out. You could even form it up like Mario Kart's Rainbow Road, in which you can see the be?autiful scenery from a bird's eye view. The music would be a no-brainer with spirited Mexican-influen?ced music from the film and the culture itself.

Disney World

[caption id="attachment_376351" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Disney World Disney Speedstorm Image by stinne24 from Pixabay[/caption]

One out-of-the-box Disney Speedstorm track would be Disney World itself. You could chase down Main Street USA, race around the wonderful Cinderella Castle, enter themed areas like the Haunted Mansion, and then work your way to the sci-fi area Tomorrowland. You could see references to the popular attractions of Disney World and emphasize the characters you see around the parks, like in Disneyland Adventures. We already have Figment i??n the character roster, so let's see his place of origin Disney World in the game.

Luca - Portorosso

[caption id="attachment_376336" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Luca Disney Speedstorm Image via Disney[/caption]

The film Luca is so pretty. The vibrant colors, the beautiful sea, and the attention to detail in Italian culture are brilliant. Driving through the narrow passages of Portorosso would be thrilling. Speeding through the farmlands would establish a new setting for Disney Speedstorm. Lastly, a beach section would transport us to the It??alian Riviera.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs - The Woodlands

[caption id="attachment_376357" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Disney Speedstorm Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Walt Disney's first cartoon for his own company, Steamboat Willie, is a featured track in Disney Speedstorm, so it would only make sense to have Disney's first-ever feature film in the game as well. You'd encounter a grand forest with stumps as obstacles and scary trees around every corner. You'd see a more cheerful part of the area too with bright flowers and the cottage shown in the above picture from Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. I'm wondering what ??a remix of "Heigh-Ho" sou??nds like. "It's home from work you go," Gameloft.

Tangled - The Kingdom of Corona

This Disney Speedstorm tracks wishlist wouldn't be complete without Tangled's Kingdom of Corona. The film and its interpretation in Kingdom Hearts 3 is blissful. There are outstanding set pieces like Rapunzel's Tower and the magnificent royal castle within a busy, yet friendly town. Similar to Snow White's setting, there's a dense forest where you can set Disney Speedstorm's racing, and you could have ramp-like hills within the wilderness. Heck, you could even set the race around the iconic lantern scene in Tangled when Rapunzel and Flynn sang "I See The Light."

Toy Story - Andy's Room

A track based on Andy's room or perhaps his entire house would be one of the best Disney Speedstorm tracks. It could be deeply inspired by Hot Wheels Unleashed or if you want to go way back, Micro Machines. You'd be a small toy-sized kart in a human-sized room, avoiding marbles blocking your way or going over Hot Wheels loop-de-loops. There's a lot of inspiration Gameloft could take from Toy Story and the two games I just mentioned.

The Princess and the Frog - The Swamp

Speaking of gigantic environments, the Swamp from The Princess and the Frog would be one of the standout Disney Speedstorm tracks. Fireflies could light the pathway as you hop across leaves on ponds. Mama Odie's tree could be a centerpiece as you race your way around the water. It would be a unique setting that no other popular Disney property could deliver. Disney is building over the former Splash Mountain with a Princess and the Frog makeover, so maybe it will gain more fame. If that's the case, we could see Princess and the Frog in Disney Speedstorm.

Racing Suit Baloo is just So. Weird.

Mickey, Goofy, Donald and chums are preparing y to crash into a stand full of screaming fans in a fiery wreckage, as licensed racer Disney Speedstorm is pr??epari?ng to leave the starting grid and burn into Early Access April 18.

While the final release of the curious new road-ripper will be free-to-play, the Early Access edition will only be open to those who have purchased one of the various special editions of the title, all of which feature various unlockable characters as well as an abundance of (quite literal) Mickey Mouse Money. Once the Early Access period which will take place on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Switch platforms concludes, then Disney Speedstorm will launch proper as a free-to-play release.
