Previously slated for the summer, a release date is officially in place for River City Girls 2's collaboration with Double Dragon. Billy and Jimmy Lee will make their way onto the mean streets as playable characters on November 12, 2024. 

The meat of the DLC is, of course, the ability to play as the hard-hitting protagonists of the Double Dragon series. Billy and Jimmy are totally unique fighte?rs, bringing their own special moves to the fray. Players will be able to bust out Hurricane Kicks and Rising Knees as they make their way through the beat 'em up's story mode.

As previously reported, Billy and Jimmy will also be fully voiced. In River City Girls 2, those voices belong to the Game Grumps themselves, Dan Avidan (Billy) and Arin Hanson (Jimmy). The two are also teaming up for a new vocal song featuring music by River City Girls composer Megan McDuffee.

Rounding it all out is the new dojo, Master Boro. As the screens and footage so far indicate, it looks like WayForward put in a lot of work to smoothly integrate the two worlds. Being one of the staples of the genre, it's a no-brainer to throw Double Dragon into the mix wherever possible, but it's nice to see it being done with the right amount of care and respect. ?Even if it all first emerged to the public as an April Foo??ls' gag! 

When it launches, players can dive into the River City Girls 2 Double Dragon DLC on all available platforms. Crac??k your knuckles and get ready to fire it up in just six days on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5,? Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Nintendo has dropped four new games into the Nintendo Switch Online SNES catalog??. It’s quite a surprisin?g lineup, especially if you’re digging the Japanese games on the service.

The one that I assume the most people reading this will recognize is Battletoads and Double Dragon (or just Battletoads Double Dragon; the logo isn’t clear). It’s another early Rare game for the pile. As the name implies, it crosses over Technos�?Double Dragon with Rare’s Battletoads. It was developed by Rare with very little input from Technos, but they sort of tried to find a mid-point between the two series. I did a full write-up of it a while ago, but I think this summarizes it: “It’s not a great Battletoads title (if one happens to exist), and it’s not a very good Double Dragon game, but there are enough appreciable factors here to keep it from being a bad game.�?/p>

The other three games are Japan-only titles. There’s an SNES port of Big Run, a raster racing game that was originally released in arcades in 1989. It’s based on the Paris-Dakar Rally event. By many accounts, it’s not great, but I have a soft spot for raster racers. There’s also a falling block puzzle game called Cosmo Gang: The Puzzle. It’s a cute ??falling blocks-style puzzle game It was also originally an arcade game (1992). I have le?ss context with this one, but the trailer makes it look cute.

Finally, there is Kunio-kun no Dodgeball da yo: Zen’in Shūgō! This is sort of one of Super Dodgeball’s sequels. As a Kunio/Nekketsu/River City/Downtown fan, I actually have the Super Famicom cartridge for this. It’s�?Like, it’s Super Dodgeball but o?n more powerful hardware. As such, it’s still fun, but the single-player ??is massively unbalanced. You assign skill points to your team, and it’s incredibly easy to overpower your team. On the plus side, it’s four-player, and if I remember correctly, you can play the main campaign coop.

Weekly Famitsu magazine recently dropped the reveal for Double Dragon Revive, a 3D take on the classic beat 'em up series. It arrives by way of developer Yuke's, which worked on Rumble Roses, as well as a bunch of WWE games up to 2018's WWE 2K19, among other titles. Now an official website and Steam page are live for the brawler, which is flexing with all its might f??or a 20??25 launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. 

Publisher Arc System Works delivered the first look at the new entry ??in the teaser trailer below. ;

If your first thoughts when a new Double Dragon game is announced go straight to Abobo, don't worry; he's here, even if his head isn't roughly the same size as his torso anymore. Abobo isn't the only musclebound monstrosity gunning for the Lee brothers. Revive promises that good ol' Bimmy and Jimmy will get to face off again??st "a variety of powerful foes from their past." From the looks of it, the latest entry has retained a sense of humor, so we'll see how many of those classic enemies end up making a revamped appearance. 

Double Dragon Revive is looking to bring new players into the mix with simple controls and a more modern balance, while also being "more than a simple b??utton-masher." Hey,? just try and stop me from mashing buttons!

The announcement mentions that the staff involved have experience working on Arc System Works fighting games, so maybe the combat w??ill go a bit deeper than some other entries. All I need to know is that I can pick up weapons and kick people into refrigerators and dumpsters. More often than not, it's the simple things that keep us going.

We may not be getting the April Fools' Day promise of Bimmy and Jammy in River City Girls 2, but WayForward's beat 'em up still plans to mine the past for some classic heroes. Instead of pure goofs, the real stars of Double Dragon are ready to get into the action as DLC this summer.

It's not a joke, but it's still played as over-the-top as one would expect from the River City Girls games. The DLC addition sees Dan Avidan and Arin Ha??nson of the Game Grumps voicing the brawlin' mainstays �???Billy and Jimmy Lee, respectively �?as previewed in the brief reveal teaser below.

Billy and Jimmy will be available on all platforms River City Girls 2 is currently on, so they'll be throwing down on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. According to the announcement, they've been among the most requested characters to be made playable in the sequel since it debuted, which shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. WayForward has history of its own with the Double Dragon series, after all. I still blast the Double Dragon Neon soundtrack on a regular basis!

In addition to laying enemies out with their staple attacks, Billy and Jimmy have been ??integrated ??into the story mode with fully-voiced scenes. Avidan and Hanson also teamed up with series composer Megan McDuffee to provide a new vocal song.

Both characters will be premium DLC, so you'll need to pay to bust heads as the duo. WayForward is cooking up a free update, as well, tossing in two more shops, new accessories, a Double Dragon-themed motion comic, and other fresh additions. More details will be revealed closer ?to the DLC's summer launch.

Arc System Works has announced that they are porting 1992’s Super Double Dragon and 2003’s Double Dragon Advance to modern platforms. In addition to that, there will also be a physical release of the two titles combined with the NES Double Dragon 1-3 as well as the modern Double Dragon IV. Unfortunately, th??e physical collection is Asia only??.

Super Double Dragon is the fourth-ish title in the series. It was also the last one to be worked on by the series' original developer, Technos. Although, series director Yoshihisa Kishimoto did return for 2017’s Double Dragon IV. Which is funny to me because he is credited with working on Super Double Dragon. So Double Dragon IV isn’t really the fourth official title in t??he series? Agh, my head hurts.

Anyway, it received a rather lukewarm reception in its initial 1992 release. This is reportedly due to a lot of the game being rushed. It’s not bad, but the belt-scrolling brawler genre was starting to get pretty glutted at the point following the success of 1989’s Final Fight.

Super Bimmy & Jimmy Advance

Meanwhile, Double Dragon Advance is something of a remake of the original game. It was tweaked in many ways to include elements that were added to the series over time. It was originally conceived to just be this one big Double Dragon blow-out, where characters and elements from all across the property were crushed in one game, but?? Atlus would only pony up for the smallest available Game Boy Advance ROM size, which was 32 MB. Director Muneki Ebinuma says that he cut out over half the planned game to fit it into this l?imited space.

The result was another title that received a lukewarm rec??eption. Once again, it isn’t bad, it just isn’t great.

However, I’m happy to see the titles get modern ports. It'd be awesome if Arc System Works brought back staff to finish the games, but that’s easier said than done. If you’re worried about not getting the physical version, you can import it from Asia, as all the titles will be available in English. Otherwise, you can complete the set with the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle as well as plain ‘ol Double Dragon IV.

Double Dragon Advance and Super Double Dragon will arrive on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on November 9. They will be s??old separately.
