Play Has Some Limits

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will be closing down its "PS Plus Collection" this spring �The collection represents a selection of 19 best-selling PS4 titles, readily available to all PS5 PlayStation Plus subsc??ribers. Access to the library will end on May 9.

The PS Plus Collection is a who's who of PS4 hits, and includes titles such as God of War, Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Resident Evil 7, The Last of Us Remastered, Until Dawn, Fallout 4, Days Gone, and Monster Hunter: World, among many others. Given the pedigree of the titles on offer,the collection is certainly one of the most inviting aspects of the P?layStation Plus s??ubscription.

SIE confirmed that all registered titles will still be readily available to players after the collection is removed, so be sure to jump in and "log" all the games from the PS Plus Collection before the fated date �That? way they'll always be available to redownload from the PlayStation Store, because you don't have enough of a? backlog already, of course. All titles will also remain available for purchase.

PlayStation Plus launched its revamped, tier-based subscription service in the summer of 2022. This variant of the classic service, structured to compete with the Xbox Game Pass service, offers PlayStation users access to a variety of brand-new, recent, and classic Play?Station games on a monthly basis, with rotating titles, beta access, and other bonuses.

The PS Plus Collection wi??ll be remov?ed from the PlayStation Store on May 9.

Dare to be Daring

Epic Games Store has revealed the next free items that it will soon be offering up to its userbase gratis �And this time around it's something a little more specific, as The Daring Lifestyle Bundle for EA's popular simulator The Sims 4 will be available to download from May 11.

The bundle contains a total of three pretty chunky expansion packs. The Jungle Adventure Game Pack will allow your Sims to venture into the land of "Selvadorada", and features Indiana Jones-esque items such as temples, treasures, cursed relics, and jungle fineries. Also included are new foods, dance moves, ??and clothing, reflective of the Selvadorada communities.

The second include expansion pack is titled Luxury Party Stuff and, a?s the name denotes, is filled with items to allow your Sims to throw the mother of all cla??ssy bashes. Fashionable dresses and evening wear, new decor and party decorations, and a veritable banquet of new food items and table dressings. See how the other half live and pretend to be part of such decadence.

The third and final expansion pack is Fashion Street Kit, and is packed out with a wardrobe full of trendy, modern clothing inspired by the vibrancy and iconic designs of Mumbai, curated by artist Shruti Sitara Singh. With a focus on patterning and bold colors, the Fashion Street Kit brings brand-new looks to your Sims, along with new emotes and other addi??tions.

While this EGS freebie is obviously only really relevant to Sims players, everyone still has time to bag the great line-up of current offerings, which include Against All Odds, Horizon Chase Turbo, and fun platformer Kao the Kangaroo. The Sims Daring Lifestyles Bundle will be available from May 11-18.

Pump up the Jam

This week's trip back to the golden age of gaming, guided by the retro-lovers over at Hamster Corporation, sees us take a look at the much lesser-known sequel to one of the most beloved coin-op classics of all time �Now available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, its Namco's Dig Dug II!

Released to the arcade market in 1985, before later being ported to the Famicom platform, Dig Dug II features all of the sounds and visuals of the seminal 1982 original, but chooses to set the action on the surface, forgoing the mine-based gameplay of the original and somewhat removing both the "Dig" and the "Dug". Hero Taizo ret??urns, once again armed with his trusty harpoon pu??mp with which he must fend off iconic enemies including Pookas, and Fygars.

In addition, Taizo is now equipped with a jackhammer, and is able to partition areas of each stage to sink into the ocean, destroying all nearby enemies, and perhaps Taizo himself if the player is careless with their jackhammering activities. While Namco should be congratulated for at least trying something a little different, Dig Dug II just doesn't have quite the same compelling nature of the original, with the top-down maze style a poor replacement for the original game's strategic tunneling system. The sequel would not receive an official?? home release outside of its native Japan, only appearing in the form of latter-day Namco compilations and retro re-releases. It's perfectly fine, of course, as is the case for almost all Namco classics, but simply cannot hold water when compared to its exceptionally well-designed forerunner.

Enter the Abyss

Epic Games has revealed the next two titles that it will be offering up to all Epic Games Store users free of charge next week �And it looks like deep sea diving and mythic adventure is the name of the game, with the arrival of E-Line Media's Beyond Blue and Upper One Games' cutesy platformer Never Alone.

Released on PC and consoles in the spring of 2020, Beyond Blue is an informative undersea adventure, inspired by the critically acclaimed BBC series The Blue Planet. As deep-sea researcher Mirai, the player will explore the fathoms of the deepest oceans, investigating the flora and fauna that dwells within this fascinating and sometimes alien universe. On release, Beyond Blue was praised by critics for its immersive atmosphere and heavenly vibes, though some were disappointed with its lack of activity and somewhat empty world. Developed by Upper One Games and released way back in 2014, Never Alone is a wholesome puzzle platformer that is also an adaptation of the legendary Iñupiat tale of "Kunuuksaayuka". The story concerns the odyssey of a young Iñupiat girl, Nuna, and her arctic fox companion as they attempt to identify the source of a s?trange blizzard that has engulfed their community.

Synergizing the abilities of the two characters, players must negotiate the world, dodging hazards and traversing the environment, while pressing ever closer to the truth about the strange snowstorm. Never Alone receiv??ed divisive reviews, with many praising the title's attractive art style and informative and historical nature, while others complained about the game's controls ??and general mechanics.

Beyond Blue and Never Alone will be available to download from Epic Games Store from April 20 until April 27. Until then, players still have the opportunity to bag current freebies Mordhau and Second Extinction before their removal on Wednesday.

This week's Arcade Archives entry is a particularly curious case, as publisher Hamster has reached right back into the dawning days of the coin-op era to present us with Namco's Navarone �Now available t?o download on PS4 and Ninten?do Switch.

Released way back in 1980 �the same year that Namco would blow the whole scene wide open with its seminal release, Pac-Man �em> Navarone is a single-screen shmup that tasks the player with circling a battlefield, blasting away at gun encampments and debris in an effort to destroy the central base located at the center of the screen. It is similar, in a fashion, to titles like Atari's Centipede, although it offers more in the way of return fire, as we??l??l as movement across three sides of the game screen.

Beautifully, the title attempts to sell the title as an adaptation of sorts to J. Lee Thompson's legendary 1961 movie The Guns of Navarone, itself an adaptation of Alistair MacLean's 1957 novel. One can only assume that this was ??not, however, an officially licensed Columbia Pictures product, which may go some way to explaining why Navarone would not receive a release outside of Japan. Be?sides, once Pac-Man Fever gripped the planet, the lo-fi thrills of Navarone would quickly fade into the background.

Back like a Bat Outta Hell

This week's Arcade Archives addition is a real forgotten gem, and sees Hamster reach well into the past to deliver Taito's unique and mythical platformer Bonze Adventure to PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Originally released to the arcade market in 1989, before later finding fame in a successful PC Engine port, Bonze Adventure, (or Jigoku Meguri in its native Japan), sees a Buddist monk venture into the bowels of the underworld itself in order to confront its monarch, King Emma, who has gone a little bit doolally and has thus lost control of Hell's denizens, which are escaping i??nto the human realm.

The surprisingly holy adventure sees Bonze venture through Emma's domain, defending himself with powered Buddist "Mala" beads, and warding off an array of demons, monsters, ghosts, spiders, and other creepy enemies and he picks his ways through a variety of glum, but strangely cute, environments. Several powerups can be gathered, and help is occasionally provided by an arriving Deva. A neat mechanic sees time represented by a series of melting candles. Despite its success, both in arcades and on the PC Engine, Bonze Adventure would fall into relativ?e obscurity, not recei??ving any sequels.

Epic Games has revealed the next title that it will be offering up to its customers free of charge over on the Epic Games Store �A delightful choice this time around, users will be able to pick up Raw Fury's period piece adventure Call of the Sea from March 9, for the grand price of Nothing.

Developed by Out of the Blue and released in December 2020, Call of the Sea is a narrative-driven, first-person puzzle adventure, set against the fashion-forward backdrop of the 1930s. Players pick up the role of Norah Everhart, who ventures into a mysterious, uncharted island in the South Pacific in order to locate her husband Harry, who has vanished while? on an expedi??tion to uncover a life-changing new medicine.

As Norah explores the island, she will meet a party of strangers �friendly or otherwise �solve puzzles, negotiate traps, and piece together the mysteries of the island, its inhabitants, and the fate of her beloved. With luscious, classic comic artwork, a heartfelt narrative, and?? some pr??etty durn tricky, (borderline obtuse), puzzles, Call of the Sea is well worth a look for any puzzle adventure, and could prove to be a fine way to while away a coming weekend or two.

Released in 2019 and developed by the delightfully named Dapper Penguin Studios, Rise of Industry tasks the player with building and maintaining a thriving industrial economy, set against the backdrop of the money-busting 1930s. The player will be required to micro-manage a number of key factors of industry, from sourcing the raw materials, to building factories an?d warehouses, to implementing shipping routes and securing trade agreements with other towns, cities, and countries.

Of course, you are not the only ambitious entrepreneur on the block, and you must ensure that your rivals don't pull the rug out from underneath you, as you adapt to changing climates, offer competitive rates and deals, and ensure the speedy manufacture and delivery of over 150 different products. Rise of Industry features several scenarios with which to test your mandate mettle, or an endless sandbox mode with which the player can build, expand, and modernize their empire at will. With easy-to-learn mec?hanics and myriad management features, this looks to be a title to keep the ol' noodle occupied well into the wee?? small hours.

It's lonely out in space...

Epic Games Store has revealed the next game that it will be offering up to its community of customers free of charge next week �And for our next freebie we'll be looking at the desolate sci-fi strategy title Duskers, which will be ava?ilable to download by all from February 2??3.

Developed by husband-and-wife indie studio Misfits Attic and released way back in 2016, Duskers sees players managing a small squadron of drones as they attempt to locate, explore, and salvage a series of lonely and haunting derelicts in the deep regions of space. The gameplay in Duskers is two-fold, with players tasked with mai??ntaining, upgrading, and micro-managing their drone units, b??efore taking them out into the field, where they are controlled with rudimentary commands in a very "classic sci-fi" manner.

It is the players' duty to maintain the drones' well-being, both on and off the field. This includes helping them to negotiate environmental hazards, avoid malfunctions and fuel loss, and ensure that the drones are kept routinely repaired and ready to rock from sector to sector. It's all very Silent Running, from a technical and aesthetic standpoint �Though I do not think Duskers features any actual gardening. Duskers would be critically acclaimed for its design and atmosphere on launch, even bagging several independe??nt game awards and nominations.

Duskers will be able to download from Epic Games Store from February 23 until March 2. Until then, players still have the opportunity to bag current freebie Warpips, before its removal on Wednesday.

Tanks a Lot

For this week's addition to the Arcade Archives, retro-funsters Hamster have gone way back to the early gaming years of Tecmo, with a revisit of the developer's tank-based blaster Senjyo, ?now available to download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released to the fledgling arcade market in 1983, Senjyo, (or "Battlefield"), sees players manning the cannon of a hi-tech tank, charged with taking down an attacking force of alien invaders. The player can rotate the tank through a 360-degree landscape, utilizing radar to locate the attackers. Senjyo was highly p?raised in its day for using parallax scrolling and forced perspective to give the illusion of 3D visuals, though some players were frustrated by the sluggish movement of the tank itself.

Senjyo would head to western arcades in 1984, arriving just in time for the market crash. Undaunted, developer Tehkan would eventually return with several sizeable hits for the home and arcade market, eventually changes its name to the more localization-friendly "Tecmo". As I'm sure nobody needs reminding, Tecmo would merge with Koei in 2009 to form Koei Tecmo, which is today best known for franchises such as Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, Monster Rancher, and Fatal Frame.

World of Words

Epic Games Store has revealed the next title that it will be offering up gratis for its huge army of users �Available to download from January 19 to all users, it's the unique, narratively driven Epistory: Typing Chronicles.

Developed by Belgian studio Fishing Cactus and released back in 2016, Epistory is the tale of a young girl, who rides a three-tailed fox around a constantly evolving origami world, under attack from an array of paper spiders and other crease-tastic bugs. Epistory: Typing Chronicles is a particularly original title from?? both an aesthetic and gameplay standpoint. ?Not only is its delightful paper world incredibly cool and inviting, but the game's story and world unfolds, (quite literally), via the player's typing ability. It's a unique, smartly conceived concept, which you can see in action for yourself in the trailer below.

The player follows on-screen typing prompts in order to control our hero, defeat their enemies, and advance the core story itself. Much like other word-based video games, such as The Typing of the Dead, speed and accuracy will be the tools necessary to progress through the adventure, accessing new areas, while protecting our foxy friend from an increasingly aggressive army of bugs. Epistory is a very novel release, and almost worth the price of admis??sion al??one for its beautifully crafted origami universe.

Epic Games has revealed the identity of the next title that it will be offering up to its users, free of charge, on its digital retail outlet Epic Games Store �Available to all as of January 12, the new freebie is Invisible Walls multiplayer mystery title Fir??st Class Trouble.

Launched on PC and PlayStation in November 2021, First Class Trouble sees a literal party of players shipped about a top-tier, highly elite space cruiser �the ISS Alithea. While the guests sip sweet champagne and car??ouse with the locals, the ship's A.I. unit, CAIN, goes rogue and decides to shut down the party and its patrons, permanently. Manifesting several lifelike androids known as "Personoids", CAIN attempts to sabotage the vessel's mainframe, while our inebriated toffs mount a rebellion n order to identify the Personoids, crush CAIN, and get back to drinking the night away.

From a gameplay standpoint, First Class Trouble sees six players take the roles of guests and/or Personoids, with the former tasked with identifying and ejecting the latter, who themselves must disrupt the ship's mechanisms without being detected. If this all sounds suspiciously familiar �or should I simply say "'sus" �then that's by design, as First Class Trouble is essentially an alternate take on the party mystery genre popularized by InnerSloth's viral hit Among Us, albeit one sporting a b?it m??ore of a "Gatsby" vibe.

First Class Trouble will be available to download from the Epic Games Store from January 12. Until then, you can still pick up current freebies Kerbal Space Program and Shadow Tactics �Aiko’s Choice from the EGS dashboard. Epic Games Store is continuing its rollout of free video games for each and every day of the holidays, today's offering �still available for a few more hours �is dark action RPG Mortal Shell, which?? all users can download direct from the EGS dashboard.

Developed by Cold Symmetry and launched on PC and console platforms in 2020, Mortal Shell is fantasy adventure that takes extreme pride in its highly challenging, melee-focused combat. Inspired by the much-loved Dark Souls franchise, the development team set out to make a similarly toned adventure where every single swing of the blade mattered, where life and death rest on the edge of one right (or wrong) decision in the heat of battle, and where swift adaptation to each ??enemy is the key to victory.

In Mortal Shell, players can inhabit the bodies (or "mortal shells") of the deceased, gaining access to their skills, weapons, and abilities. As such, the combat in the game has a natural evolution, as the player passes from body to body, learning new skills on the fly and adapting to the reconfiguration of their offensive and defensive maneuvers. Mortal Shell received plaudits on release for its smart combat and compelling challenge, with many noting that its unabashed love of the FromSoftware titles was readily apparent, with some reviewers noting that it felt like playing Dark Souls for the first time all over again.

Mortal Shell is available to download for free from Epic Games Store. It is also available on PlayStation, Xbox, an??d Nintendo Switch platforms.

As the year's end shuffles into view, number-crunching firms are taking a look back at the last 12 months to recognize patterns, facts, and figures as they pertain to gaming, retail, prices, sales, and player behavior �And a new report from the statisticians at NewZoo offers up some interesting reading.

NewZoo places its estimate for the global games market value at a staggering $184.4 billion USD??. This accounts for almost game sales, on PC, console, and mobile platforms. It should also be noted that this already impressive?? figure does not take into account Nintendo game sales, as the publisher has always been weirdly prudish when it comes to revealing its own bottom line.

Of this total market value, $51.8 billion manifested through console games, with a further $38.2 billion pulled in by downloaded/boxed PC titles, and $2.3 billion from browser-based PC games. Of course, mobile gaming takes the lion's share, with a massive $92.2 billion in total revenue. This sector was led by the continued dominance of titles such as TiMi Studios' Honor of Kings, and PUBG Corporation's PUBG Mobile, which?? continue to earn billions year-on-year from the global market.

When it comes specifically to console gaming, around 72% of all game sales were digital downloads, with only the remained 28% accounting for physical releases. This continues a trend we have witnessed for many years now, with each consecutive year seeing more and more customers opting for digital game purchases over boxed copies. Again, this figure does not include Nintendo Switch software, which represents perhaps the last real bastion of high-street retail gaming purchases.

Right on schedule, Epic Games Store has revealed the next title that it will be offering up to all of its users gratis in the coming week �And it looks like we're headed to a galaxy far, far away, with the arrival of Electronic Arts space flight dogfighter Star Wars Squadrons, available to download next week.

Developed by EA Motive and released on PC and consoles in the fall of 2020, Star Wars Squadrons is a dogfighter that aims to capture the majesty, splendor and visual style of the iconic movie series. Boasting an original storyline set after the events of Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Squadrons puts players in dual roles as members of both The New Republic and The ??Galactic Empire, both of which are tasked with the creation or destruction of a devastating new vessel known as Project Starhawk.

Star Wars Squadrons features a full story campaign as well as several multiple modes, and allows players to pilot an array of famous ships such as the X-Wing, the B-Wing, the TIE Fighter, and the TIE Bomber. Stars Wars Squadrons received moderate prai??se for its visua??ls and authenticity to the Star Wars universe, though some lauded the title's unfulfilling "work against yourself" story mode, as well as a general lack of content.

Star Wars Squadrons is available to download from Epic Games Store on November 24. Until then, users can still bag themselves current freebies Evil Dead: The Game and Dark Deity.

Toy Story

This week's Arcade Archives entry is coming to tug both your heartstrings and your marionette strings �Pulled out from Hamster Corporation's big bag of Namco classics, it's cartoonish obscurity Toy Pop, ??now available to download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released to Japanese arcades in 1986, before later making its way to the Sharp X1 home computer, Toy Pop is a top-down, multi-directional shooter set within a colorful toy-based kingdom. Our heroes, Pino and Acha, are two dolls who must rescue their friends f?rom the spell of the wicked witch, Mayjo. The two puppets climb the 44 floors of Mayjo's castle, freeing their friends and gathering food, treasures, and hearts in jovial, single-screen action.

Various special abilities can be found hidden within gift boxes, and every few stages players are treated to an apple-catching bonus round to help boost that all-important score. Save your friends, defeat Mayjo, collect the apples, and restore order to toybox town. It ain't Lies of P, that's for damn sure.

Toy Pop was something of a rarity, rarely seen outside of its native Japan, it was also one of the few mid-'80s arcades not to find its way onto the Nintendo Famicom platform. It is, undeniably a very charming and irrep??ressibly cute title, with wonderful litt??le heroes, fun enemies, and spritely visuals, designed by the dearly departed "Mr. Dotman" Hiroshi Ono. All of this action is backed with a fun ragtime score composed by arcade veteran Junko Ozawa. It's a very delightful little package.

It's quite sad, on reflection, that the Toy Pop brand did not evolve, as Pino and Acha seem like loveable characters who could have turned their wooden hands to a variety of different arcade genres. Digital retail outlet Epic Games Store has revealed the identities of the next two games it will be offering up to its army of users free of charge �As of October 20, customers will be able to download both Bethesda's genre-defining sequel Fallout 3 and Shiro Games' cutesy RPG Evoland for a mighty zero dollars.

Originally released (to fevered anticipation) back in 2008, Fallout 3 was something of a watershed moment for the first-person RPG genre. While a little rough around the edges �to put it mildly �this tale of the trials and tribulations of traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland completely wowed fans with its enormous map, cast of memorable chara?cters, terrifying array of enemies, and bleak, blank, but compelling world.

Hundreds upon hundreds of hours could be lost exploring the Fallout 3 universe, performing quests, uncovering secrets, raiding abandoned grocery stores, and doling out a solid dose of wasteland justice to the ne'er-do wells that reside within. Players were stunned by the sequel's open-ended structure and myriad locations, communities, allies, and enemies. Arguably, Fallout 3 was the biggest "shake-up" moment for a genre since the release of Grand Theft Auto III. And while it must be said that the classic looks very rough to 2022 eyes, its ??legacy in the pantheon of all-timers cannot be denied.

2013 release Evoland, developed by French indie outfit Shiro Games, is an RPG in something of the traditional sense �all top-down, dungeon-crawling, sword-swinging action. A love letter to an array of classics that came before it, Evoland charts the progression of the very genre itself, offering tribute to beloved examples such as The Legend of Zelda, Diablo, and Square Enix' Final Fantasy series.

The game begins, quite literally, with a simple series of shapes, recalling the halcyon days of video gaming's earliest appearances. As players progress through the ever-evolving world (hence "Evoland"), they will see the universe take form around them, metamorphizing into a more modern gaming experience. Evoland is both a mini-epic and a less?on in gaming history �An important reminder of where we are today and how we had the good fortune to arrive her??e.

Evoland is more an experiment in culture ??than a fully formed game, but is fascinating nonetheless.

Fallout 3 and Evoland can both be downloaded from the Epic Games Store from October 20. Until then, users can still bag themselves current freebies Darkwood and ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove.

The Lands are now a little more Between

FromSoftware has released a new update for its 2022 super-seller, Elden Ring �Version? 107, now availabl??e on all platforms, focuses on bug fixes across the board, and includes a fresh set of balance tweaks for the challenging adventure title's PvP Mode.

Those who enjoy battling other adventurers traversing The Lands ??Between should be aware that the new update increases Stamina Attack Power for all attacks on guarded opponents, save for when long-range weapons are at play. Several incantations have also had a power nerf, including Dragonfire, Agheel's Flame, Glintstone Breath, Smarag's Glintstone Breath, Rotten Breath, Ekzykes's Decay, Dragonice, Borealis's Mist, and Unendurable Frenzy. Finally, Ashes of War has had a power nerf across the board.

Damage scaling has now been enabled on a separate plane for all weapons, skills, spells, and incantations used in PvP play. None of the applied changes will affect Elden Ring's single-player campaign nor its cooperative mode. All changes are restricted player for player vs player encounters. Smaller tweaks have been applied to Poise, weapon attack speeds, and a variety of spells. For a full list of patch notes, you can visit the official Elden Ring blog.

In somewhat more unofficial news, (as reported by VGC), Elden Ring modder Lance McDonald has already dug into the code featured in the new update, and postulates that the update contains references to maps and areas that are yet to appear in the FromSoft adventure, suggesting the possibility that a DLC expansion could be en route. Such a release would come as no surprise, given the incredible success of Elden Ring from a critical and sales standpoint. Of course, the? data could merely reference previously tossed locations that were deleted before deve??lopment was completed.

Online retail outlet Epic Games Store has revealed the next title that it will be offering up to its users gratis, following this week's current offerings �And it will be none other than the old-school cool release Toe Jam & Earl: Back in the Groove, which will be available to all customers on October 13.

Released to PC and consoles in the spring of 2019, Back in the Groove saw the long-awaited return of early '90s gaming goofballs Toe Jam & Earl, as the awesome aliens once again returned to their isometric adventure roots. Once again, the funky fresh aliens have crash-landed on Planet Earth, and must recover all of?? the ??pieces of their "Rapmaster Rocket" in order to get back out into the great beyond.

Now sporting a roster of both new and familiar playable characters, as well as four-player co-op action, the series' dopey sense of humor, and the tongue-in-cheek "radical" vibes of the 1990s, all slickly adapted for the modern age. A suitably fresh soundtrack was composed by funk musician Cody Wright, while the entire project was overseen by Toe Jam & Earl co-creator Greg Johnson and, believe it or not??, lifelong fan Macaulay Culkin.

On release, Back in the Groove was welcomed by the TJ&E fanbase, while critical reviews ranged wildly from mediocre to excellent. As divisive as the duo has ever been, Back in the Groove is clearly a title that will mean different things to different players. At least, given its upcoming freebie status, y??ou'll be able to check out where you stand on the animated actioner �no strings? attached, dude.

Toe Jam & Earl: Back in the Groove will be free to download from Epic Games Store from October 13. Until then, you still have time to bag current freebies Rising Hell and Slain: Back from Hell from the store.

Chocks away and all that malarky, as Nintendo has announced that its skyfairing compendium, Pilotwings 64, will be the next Nintendo 64 cla??ssic to join the Nintendo Switch Online service. The new title will be added to the Switch Online archives on Thursday, October 13.

Released on N64 in 1996, Pilotwings 64 is a revamped edition of the much-loved 1990 SNES classic, best known for its groundbreaking use of Mode 7 technology, which was very much a boasting point for Nintendo during the 16-bit era. Much like the original, Pilotwings 64 features an array ??of airborne stunts and acrobatic activities, including skydiving, Cannonball, stunt gliding, or even taking to the wild blue yonder equipped with a jet pack or sea??ted in a gyrocopter!

My dad started building a gyrocopter a decade ago. I think h??e sold it before completion. True story.

Anyway, Pilotwings 64 will be made available to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and joins a roster of beloved hits from yesteryear that already includes Kirby 64, Pokemon Snap, Mario Golf, F-Zero X, Star Fox 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and, of course, Super Mario 64. Most recently, Nintendo finally confirmed that GoldenEye 007, one of the N64's most iconic releases and conspicuous by its continued absence, is headed to the archives? in the near future, complete with ??online multiplayer.

Hell Yes

'Tis Friday, and, like clockwork, Epic Games Store has revealed the identities of the next free titles that it will be rolling out to store users over the next week �And it looks like there's something of a Very Metal theme to next week's fare, with the arrival of pixel actioners Rising Hell and Slain: Back from Hell (no relation.)

First released in 2019 and developed by Indonesia?n developer Tahoe Games, Rising Hell is a Gothic rogue-lite dungeon crawler that places a heavy emphasis on platform traversal and verticality. Players embark upon a seemingly insurmountable challenge to literally climb out of Hell, starting at the very pit of oblivion and w?orking their upwards, battling horribly unholy demons and monsters en route.

As is to be expected from such a Devil's Horns-flinging release, Rising Hell has a very metal aesthetic, with guitar wailing scores, vulgar visual design, and a relentless, ??head-banging challenge. Featuring a ton of epic boss battles, several gamepl??ay modes, and a roster of selectable characters, Rising Hell was well received by players on release, and might well be worth a weekend of redemption.

Developed by Steel Mantis and released way back in 2016, Slain: Back From Hell could almost be seen as a distant cousin of Rising Hell, sporting similar pixel visuals, c??hallenging platforming action and, of course, a hard-rockin' aesthetic. As doomed hero Bathoryn, players battle their way through another hugely Gothic world, on a mission to liberate ??the realms from the clutches of six malevolent overlords.

Between Rising Hell and Slain: Back from Hell, Epic Games Store fans have got a pretty unholy week ahead. But, if you dig that whole heavy metal retro vibe, then it's definitely wort??h keeping an eye on the calendar and ensuring that you bag next week's EGS freebies whe?n they are made available to all on October 6.

Epic Games Store has revealed the two new titles that it will be offering up gratis this week. As of Thursday, September 22, all EGS users will be able to download Studio Wildcard's Ark: Survival Evolved and Asmodee Digital's Gloomhaven completely free of charge.

Released for PC and consoles way back in 2017, Ark: Survival Evolved is �as its name denotes �a survival ??title set in an anachronistic?? prehistoric world. As a human outfitted with more modern technologies, players must build bases and habitats within a huge open world, gathering resources and increasing defenses while fending off attacks from rampaging packs of dinosaurs and potentially hostile human players. Players can also capture and tame dinosaurs for transport and guard duties.

Originally released for Steam Early Access back in 2015, developer Studio Wildcard has slowly built upon the original title in the ensuing years, adding more features, PvE modes, additional dinosaurs, and expansive new lands, objectives, and questlines. Ark: Survival Evolved would be ported to mobile and N??intendo Switch in 2018, and the Stadia platform in 2021.

Developed by Flaming Fowl Studios, Gloomhaven is a digital adaptation of the fantasy tabletop title of the same name. Set against the backdrop of the grim titular 'berg, players guide packs of class-based mercenaries on quests and missions, utilizing their characters' unique skills and abilities to overcome any opposition. The digital edition of Gloomhaven is, more or less, a direct adaptation of the tabletop game, following the same rules and objectives of its physic??al source.

Both Ark: Survival Evolved and Gloomhaven will be free on the Epic Games St??ore from September 22 until September 2??9.

The Secret Garden

This week's Arcade Archives entry from Hamster is in keeping with the week's ongoing theme of farming/gardening titles, though this one provides a little added spookiness �Namco's maze chaser Rompers i??s now available to download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released to arcades in 1989 and designed by Splatterhouse creator Akira Usukura, Rompers is a maze-chasing title that sees a young farmer on a quest to rescue his girlfriend from th??e clutches of an army of monsters and ghoulies. Our hero, "Chap," must negotiate a series of garden mazes, gathering a total of 61 keys to unlock what must be the biggest door in human history and free his gal from her floral prison.

Being chased by dinosaurs, wolves, jellied blobs, a cigarette-smoking... thing, and even a cute, unkillable lady vampire named Tsukaima, Chap's only defense is the ability to push walls to block or crush his opponents (though defeated enemies will return after a short period of downtime). After battling his way through each maze, Chap will come face to face with his lady's captor, the m??ad scientist Gurerin. Like a lot of maze-chaser titles, short intermission sequences features cute cartoon cutscenes starring the game's characters.

Rompers would not receive a home port, but did feature in several Namco compilations and was made ava?ilable on the Wii's Virtual Console in Japan. This new release represents one of the very few occasions in which the title has been made officially available outside of Japan.

Rompers is available to download now on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, pr?iced a??t around $8.

Scratch that organization itch

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a new update for the cream dream that is the PS5 �Version *checks note* 22.02-06.00.00 brings with it new resolution options, social activities, along with the long-requested Game Lists feature, whi??ch finally makes its grand return.

If your display/monitor supports 1440p, then you'll be pleased to hear that the PS5 can now output in this native resolution. Additionally, a Screen Share option wi??ll allow players in parties to watch each other's embarrassing performances, while a cute sticker system allows you to send small icons and images to your friends via Game Base. Send me some stickers. In addition, the DualSense has had a minor tweak for stability, while Voice Command (in English) has been added to the YouTube app.

The Game List feature allows players to sort their games into folders, allowing you to group titles by genre, franchise, developer, or whether Juri is in them. PS5 users can have up to 15 lists in total, each of which can hold up to 100 games each �which is pretty funny once you consider a PS5's SSD is full to capacity once you add three games and six screenshots �or just one Call of Duty title.

Playing with the Boys

Something a little more low-key from the retro fun-fans over at Hamster this week, as the labyrinthine Arcade Archives has been bolstered with the arrival of Video System's hard-spikin' Super Volleyball on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released to the arcade market in 1989, before receiving home ports on the Sega Mega Drive and the TurboGrafx-16, Super Volleyball is an incredibly typical take on the high-jumping beach sport. Tw?o teams of four players battle it out on a very basic 2D plane, with each team representing one of eight global nations.

While Super Volleyball features neat animation and some neat picture-in-picture cutscenes, it has a generally clunky vibe and seems dated, even by 1989 standards. The same year would see other sports titles such as Midway's Arch Rivals, Technos' WWF Superstars, and Sega's Super Monaco GP. By comparison, Video System's release feels several years o??ut of time and is admittedly a tough recommend in 2022.

The Daddy Mack'll make ya...

Something very different from the old-school players at Hamster this week, as Namco's strange, science-fiction runner Metro-Cross joins the Arcade Archives �available t??o download now on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released to the arcade market in 1985, before receiving ports to a wide variety of home computers, Metro-Cross is a fast-paced, side-scrolling runner, predating popular such as Temple Run and Canabalt ??by a good few decades. Players guide a jumpsuited protagonist as they sprint down a hi-tech corridor laden with traps, hazards, and obstacles. The crazy sprinting action is automatic and unstoppable, with the player tasked with keeping our star from coming a cropper at ?the myriad objects that lay strewn in their path.

In a crazy headlong dash against the clock, The Runner must dodge and/or leap over the obstacles, while picking up drinks to maintain their stamina and even boarding a handy skateboard in order to increase their momentum. Like so many fast scrolling titles of the day, Metro-Cross is a little dizzying, not helped by the game's checkerboard pattern, but it's an amusing oddity, and as such it's neat to see it added to Hamster's ever-growing collection of games that time forgot. A sequel, Aero-Cross, was being developed in the late-'00s for release on Xbox Live Arcade, but the game was? ultimately canceled.

Metro-Cross is available to downloa??d now on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, priced at around $8.

Rivals Schooled

As if Sloclap's vengeance-fueled adventure Sifu wasn't badass enough, the hard-hitting action-RPG has been g??iven an extra injection of coolness via a series of super funky fan mods. The skin-swaps allow PC players to replace the protagonist with some famous faces from the world of one-on-one fighting games.

Designed and uploaded by talented modder Dodylectable, the fun roster of guest stars includes recognizable characters such as Ken and Sakura from Street Fighter, Kazuya Mishima from Tekken and... erm... Gordon Freeman from Half-Life. Almost as if commissioned by yer boy Moyse, Dodylectable has also created mods of two of my all-time favorite characters: The King of Fighters' Leona Heidern and Street Fighter's Korean assassin, Juri.

Given the sublime use of motion, impact, and momentum that makes Sifu's combat such a (literal) smash hit, it is amazin??g how snugly Sakura fits into the adventure, bopping brains and taking names as she battles her way through the mean avenues and alleyways of China's criminal underground. The fact that Ms. Kasugano is still wearing her school uniform, (complete with backpack), only adds to the excitement �as if she embarked upon this path ?of complete destruction right after classes closed.

From Sifu's initial announcement, I have frequently referenced how desperately I want to see Japanese cinematic superstar Etsuko Shihomi modded into the game. While the Sister Street Fighter is sadly yet to make her Sifu debut, these mods make the prospect o??f such a creation even more tantalizing to me. I'll continue to dream. In the meantime, school's out... and I know a girl who has s??ome noses to bust.

Kirby's always 'aving-a-lunch

Nintendo has added a curious mix of three retro releases to its Nintendo Switch Online service �Now available to download to subscribers worldwide, the trifecta of titles includes Kirby's Avalanche and Fighter's History for SNES, and obscurity Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia for the NES.

Released in 1995 at the height of the block-dropping renaissance, Kirby's Avalanche, (also known as Kirby's Ghost Trap), is a reskinned edition of the Japanese classic Super Puyo Puyo, offered a fresh coat of Kirby-based repaint in order to make it a little more endearing for the western market. In typical Puyo Puyo fashion, players must connect together descending drops of colored blobs, matching up palettes in order to create bonus-scoring combos. For many westerners, this was their intro to the classic puzzle ser?ies.

Fighter's History was released to arcades in 1993, (with the SNES port appearing in 1994), and is Data East's effort into the then-burgeoning one-on-one fighting game genre. While Fighter's History is perhaps the most shameless of the Street Fighter clones, it's a surprisingly neat series, boasting some fun characters and a charismatic taste for the bizarre. The SNES would receive a port fo the second sequel Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!! in 1995.

Released for the NES in 1986, Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia is an action strategy adventure and, as the name suggests, the s?ixth mainline entry in the super niche Daiva Story franchise. The obscure title combines war-sim-like strategy with action-based platforming sections, as players attempt to colonize various planets while defending their home territory from invading forces. It's a particularly interesting choice for the Nintendo Switch Online archive, and thus a very welcome one.

Kirby's Avalanche, Fighter's History, and Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia are now available to download for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

Can't you take a Yoke?

Still on its Namco kick, the retro fun factory that is Hamster Corporation is offering up something a little special for this week's release, as the under-the-radar but surprisingly groundbreaking Thunder Ceptor is available to download rig?ht now on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Originally released to the arcade market in the summer of 1986, Thunder Ceptor is an into-the-screen rail shooter with shmup elements and a hyper-futuristic aesthetic. Developed and released by Namco as something as an answer to smash hit Space Harrier, the game features the fast-paced, into-the-screen shmup action as the Sega classic, complete with dazzling colors and incredibly fast-paced galactic gameplay. At the time, Thunder Ceptor was by far Namco's most technically advanced and resource-heavy release yet, and is also the first-ever video game to feature a 360-degree yoke controller. Like Space Harrier, Namco's offering also boasted an impressive sit-in arcade cabinet. Not content with this all this extravagance, Namco would offer up revamp-cum-sequel 3D Thunder Ceptor II later that same year, which added stereoscopic 3D visuals to allow fo?r further immersion and/or headaches.

Surprisingly, however, Thunder Ceptor has not seen the same level of celebration as many of Namco's other releases, having been frequently left off of multiple retro compilations, leaving the 3D shmup to fall between the cracks of the company's long-term history. While not as slick or as?? polished as its inspiration, the pretender still brought a few cool tricks to t?he arcade dance hall, and its resurrection through the Arcade Archives range has been a long time coming.

A Scary Good Time

Death, Taxes, and the leaking of next month's PlayStation Plus offerings �sunrise, sunset, and all that. First on the agenda is Toys for Bob's fab sequel Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. Originally released on PlayStation and Xbox platforms back in 2020, Activision's third mainline sequel sees the wild-eyed bandicoot, his pals, and even his enemies squad up for a trip through the past, the present, the future, and even alternate dimensions. With colorful chunky graphics, exciting gameplay, and some solid level design, it's a return to form for our box-breaking hero �a game that I got a helluva lot of enjoyment out of. Both the PS5 and PS4 editions of Crash Bandicoot 4 will be made available to PS Plus users

At the other end of the spectrum, July will also bring with it the terror of The Dark Pictures' first chapter, Man of Medan. This initial entry in Supermassive Games' acclaimed horror anthology sees a group of hapless college students taken captive by a band of roving pirates, forced to sail the seas in search of a long-fabled treasure. But if our young protagonists think their abduction is the worst that can possibly happen to them, both captives an?d captors are about to experience a nightmare that none of them could have ever imagined.

The third and final PS Plus game for July is the high sci-fi multiplayer title Arcadegeddon. Developed by indie outfit Illfonic and released during the summer of 2021, Arcadegeddon sees a gang of slick hackers transport themselves into a "super game," with the goal of eradicating the sentiment virus that resides within and saving a popular arcade hangout. Arcadegeddon features an inviting neon/electro aesthetic and colorful, non-stop multiplaye?r action. Both? the PS4 and PS5 editions of the game will be made available.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, and Arcadegeddon will be made available to all tiers of PlayStation Plus subscribers. There is still time to claim June's PlayStation Plus titles �God of War, Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl �before they leave the service on July 5.
