With Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a fre?sh wave of new players ia headed to the Dragon Age universe. There are hundreds of hours of lore to explore and quite a few previous games that you can play through, but figuring out the order can be troublesome.

There are a total of nine games, including spin-offs, set in the world of Dragon Age. While i??t’s not strictly necessary to play all of them, it can be useful if you want to immerse yourself in the lore.

Before getting into the games that you can actually still play, here are a few honorable mentions for Dragon Age games that have been lost to the aether:

  • Dragon Age Journeys (2009)

    • A Flash-based web browser game that was sadly canceled after the release of the first chapter.

  • Dragon Age Legends (2011)

    • A Facebook game that remained playable for roughly a year before being taken offline. For a time, an offline version was available to download, but this no longer seems to be the case.

  • Heroes of Dragon Age (2013)

    • A free-to-play mobile game that remained online for a decade before servers were disconnected on January 23, 2024.

  • Dragon Age: The Last Court (2014)

    • A free-to-play browser game set between the events of Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition. It remained online until November 17, 2020.

All Dragon Age games in order

Dragon Age: Origins (2009)

Dragon Age: Origins was first released on Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with the release for Mac OS X coming roughly a month afterward. This was the first dive into Ferelden and gave players the choice between not only classes (Warrior, Mage, or Rogue) but also their genetic background?? (Elven, Human, or Dwarven). The adventure revolved around being recruited into the Grey Wardens to take down the threat that is the Darkspawn.

Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening (2010)

Technically, Awakening was the expansion for Dragon Age: Origins, which add?ed a whole new campaign that took place after the event of the original game and was available on all of the same platforms. If you want to purchase Dragon Age: Origins now, you'll likely only find the Ultimate Edition, which includes all of Awakening's content as part of your purchase.

Dragon Age II (2011)

The first proper sequel to the original, Dragon Age II came two years later in 2011. This time, players were thrust into the role of Hawke, who was always a human but had the? choice of being a Warrior, Mage, or Rogue once more. Hawke, accompanied by various companions who felt differently about them depending on their choices, strove to become Champion of Kirkwall amid the chaos of conflict.

Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014)

Dragon Age: Inquisition

In Dragon Age: Inquisition, players were thrust into the role of the Inquisitor, and they had all of the previous choices, along with a chance to play as the newly added “Qunarirace. After surviving a devastating event that left a Breach in the sky, releasing a whole bunch of d??emons into the world, the Inquisitor is deemed by some to be the “chosen onethanks to a mark on his hand and must battle to stop Corypheus and close the Breach.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024)

The latest in the line of Dragon Age games comes a whole decade after Inquisition. Although I haven’t quite gotten around to playing through the story in the hours since I woke up this morning, I do know that The Veilguard takes p??lace approximately 10 years after the events of the previous games and centers around a character known as Rook, who must take down Solas before he can complete his rit?ual to tear down the Veil.

The Dragon Age is pretty damn long

Depending on who you ask, Dragon Age is either one of the best RPG franchises to come out of BioWare in a long time or a lot of failed potential from a once great company. While I never personally cared for the series, I do admire how the PC version of the first game can be played exclusively like Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate from an overhead viewpoint, which is rea??lly old-school. I just wish the rest of the series reveled in that attention to detail, since the games are mostly a hodge-podge of action elements with lite-RPG systems.

If you're big into the series though, you'll be happy to know that BioWare has plans for a theoretical Dragon Age 4 and 5! Mike Laidlaw, the senior creative director for BioWare, told a fan on Twitter that his team has a?? plan for the series that involves being two games ahead.

As you can see, it looks like Dragon Age won't be ending anytime soon. It has been roughly three years since the release of Inquisition, though, so maybe Laidlaw is hinting at a new sequel being in the works. Even if he is??n't, fans won't have to worry about the series ever randomly ending only to be revived with a?? half-baked interquel.

'Oh Boy! Assassin's Creed III' - No one ever

Look, I'm going to be honest with you guys. I hate Assassin's Creed III. I understand some people feel it is a great game and it does have a very interesting setting, but it was easily one of the worst titles of 2012. I didn't even play it until years later (2014) and on PC, but the game still had a bunch of issues. That final chase scene was one of the worst ??bits of gameplay I've ever dealt with; I don't know why Connor likes running up invisible walls or can't jump over fire, but I guess Ubisoft wants me to experience their grand finale in a highly scripted manner.

Regardless, I wouldn't consider next month's line-up of Games with Gold bad if Assassin's Creed III was the only questionable title. For whatever reason, Microsoft has deemed Xbox One owners should get Watch_Dogs, so now I really have to wonder if Ubisoft made some kind of deal to ruin Xbox Gamers' June. At least the other two games are good, even if Dragon Age is eight years old.

For Xbox One users, you'll be able to grab Speedrunners (finally) from June 1 to the 30th and pass over Watch Dogs from June 16 - July 15. Xbox 360 users can forget Assassin's Creed III from June 1 - June 15 and nab Dragon Age: Origins from June 16 - June 30. Microsoft is also throwing in a freebie of some Phantom Dust DLC, which s??hould work on Xbox One and PC (the game is an Xbox Play Anywhere title).

It should also be noted that all 360 titles offered on Games with Gold are backward compatible, so if you feel the need to destroy your soul, you can relive the horror of Assassin's Creed III on your Xbox One. If you actually do enjoy t??he game, then more power to you. I wish I could see w??hat you find so appealing.

OH MY GAWD!!!

Maybe in a move to compensate for the cancellation of Scalebound, Microsoft has updated the backward compatibility service on Xbox One with a whopping seven games today. Announced through Twitter by Major Nelson, gamers will be able to experience some older Battlefield titles along with Live Arcade games I've honestly never heard of. Note that Battlefield 3 is disc only for the time being.

According to some previous tweets, it seems like January is going to be quite the month for backward compatible games on Xbox One. Maybe we can finally knock out the rest of the missing Call of Duty games so they can leave the list of the most requested titles. Really, I just want DJ Hero on Xbox One, as impossible as that may be.

DLC not included

Many of you haven't seemed too thrilled with EA's free game offerings on Origin, which? is understandable -- they've been hit or miss. This one should prove a bit more compelling.

The standard edition of Dragon Age: Origins is free to download on Origin now through Tuesday, October 14. To be clear, if you get the title in that time, it??'s yours to keep and play as you like. (Some of EA's other promotions don't function this way.)

Yeah, the promo is clearly timed as a lead-in to Dragon Age: Inquisition's impending release, but that's fine. Just glad it's the original we're getting here instead of the sequel.

Also, I love how this is the screenshot that greets? you upon en??tering the game's Origin page.

Like, "Hey kids, have we got a v??ideogame for you!"

It's been a while since we last heard of Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker, the anime spin-off of Bioware's fantasy RPG. Dragonagemovie.com has been updated, and we now know that Bioware and EA's collaboration with FUNimation is coming in Spring 2012. Fumihiko Sori (Vexille) is?? directing the project, and studio Oxybot is taking care of animation duties. And my, what horrible animation it is. It looks quite poor, with objects hav??ing no weight at all.

Maybe the story will make up for it? Dawn of the Seeker tells the story of Cassandra, an Orlesian Seeker who is framed while attempting to save the Chantry of Andraste from a dangerous consp??iracy. Cassandra must clear her name and "overcome her raging emotions" to save the day. I can almost see Bioware finishing their synopsis with, "Women, am I rig??ht?"

A little over a year ago, FUNimation announcedDragon Age anime project, a surprising move for a com?pany that normally focuses on translation and localization. Since then, we haven't heard much, and here's why: the project has been pushed back to 2012. At least FUNimation has released a little more info about it though!

Officially titled Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker, the anime will feature a girl with three swords and, most likely, a dragon. You can check out some trailers of what'??s in progress so far, as well as the first concept art image. For a pict??ure, it looks good! Now to wait on a synopsis.
