Th??e subject of this list has likely been the most memefied of all time, but that's likely the work of the villains and traitors who want to make their vil??e crimes seem more passable via the filter of easy Internet laughter. That shall not pass.

Anime is everyone's go-to for over-the-top action and drama, meaning it also sets the perfect stage for some of the most heartbreak and revenge quest-inciting moments of all time. Let's take a?n actual serious look at the vilest ??betrayals in the history of anime.

10. Aizen is actually evil, but actually cooler than you knew (Bleach)

Aizen betrays the soul society to reveal not that he was working with the bad guys, but that he was the bad guy. Aizen then goes on to pull his hair back and toss his glasses ??away, giving us the second surprise reveal that he'd been a total chad the entire time. This is an awesome betrayal that even mimics the popular Hollywood trend of showing the culprit's supposed corpse beforehand an attempt to throw audience??s off.

I'm not giving Aizen's betrayal a low ranking because I think it's bad. I'm giving it a low rank because I think it's actually a pretty cool betrayal and one? that's ??not heartbreaking at all.

9. Frieza turns on the Saiyans (Dragon Ball Z)

This is one of the best betrayals in ??anime history because on top of showing true villainy, it also reveals the villain's greatest shortcomings. Though incredibly powerful and respected by the Sayians, Frieza's fear that they'll turn on him has him deciding to destroy their home planet in an attempt to kill all birds with one energy ball.

It's a cute idea, thoug?h Frieza probably should've put more thought into the part where he willingly leaves Prince Vegeta, the most vengeful and most powerful known Sayian threat to F??rieza's rule, out of his murderous plan.

Reiner and Bertholdt (Attack On Titan)

The events of Attack On Titan are kickstarted by the Colossal and Armored Titans, two of the most powerful villains that we encounter throughout t??he entire series. They show up numerous times to spread death and destruction, then vanish before getting caught or killed.

The whole thing seems fishy from the get-go, but viewers are struck by a punch in the gut when they learn that these aren't just brainless monsters, nor even full-?time Titans. These are actually the Titan forms of Reiner and Bertholdt, two people you'd ex?pect to be fighting against the Titan threat.

7. Itachi does a mass murder (Naruto)

Ninjas are no stranger to killing, but there's kill??ing your enemies and then there's killing your own folk. Itachi doesn't seem to make that distinction, as he conducts the massacre of his own clan.

In Itachi's defense, he does it out of self-preservation and to save his little brother. This gives this character way more depth than what one would expect from s??omeone responsible for this kind of deed.

6. Ultimate Walter is a completely different guy (Hellsing Ultimate)

Walter spends most of the show being the efficient Butler/handyman of Integra Hellsing in the Millenium organization, then has a change of heart that puts the main characters in serious jeopardy. By itself, this isn't a huge betrayal because turns out he's actually evil because he'd been brainwashed, but it gains a lot of weight if you've known the previous iteration of Hellsing.

Before Hellsing Ultimate, there was just Hellsing, another highly popular anime in which Walter stays loyal to the "good g??uys" until the end, even nearly sacrificing his own life out of loyalty to the cause.

5. Kaworu loves Shinji but has second intentions (Evangelion)

Kaworu is such a famous character that it's hard to believe he only shows up in one episode of the original Evangelion. He and Shinji, the main character, share the closest Shinji ever has to a real friend??ship, but it just doesn't last.

It turns out that Kaworu is an angel, and his objective is? to reach the base of NERV's headquarters. Even though he's there to pretty much end the world as we know it, his feelings for Shinji are true, which makes this one of the most bittersweet be??trayals in anime.

4. Kyubei is the worst cat (Madoka Magica)

What if the fairy godmother was an evil mischievous being who only "helped" to suit her ulterior motives? That's more or l?ess the hidden premise of Madoka Magica, a story a seemingly cute cat asks girls if they want the power to fight an important battle against evil.

Who would say no to cool anime powers? The problem is that Kyubei doesn't immediately state that those who accept will either have to fight forever or will become that evil themselves. Kyubei is less of an empowering mentor and more of a merchant of dea??th who sells non-cures for the disease it's responsible for spreading.

3. Harry MacDowell shows his true colors (Gungrave)

Brandon Heat spends the first half of GunGrave helping his friend, Harry, get to the top of the Millenion, the largest criminal organization in the world. It's only when they're at the cusp of reaching their goal that Harry makes Brandon an offer he can't refuse. Still, Brandon doesn't immediately accept it, and that's more than enough f??or Harry to try ??to off Brandon right there and then. Harry's rash betrayal paves the way for Brandon's brutal revenge arc in the second half of the series.

Seeing the main character trusting his best friend ??against his better judgement, only to see his supposed best friend killing him off out of feeling offended is just rough.

2. Griffith sacrifices the band of the hawk (Berserk)

What makes this one of the most interesting betrayals of all time is that Griffith states at the very beginning of Berserk that he will do whatever it takes to achieve his dream. Still, we see him grow closer and closer to his men, especially Guts, which leads viewers to believe he's actually learned that there are more important things in life. Maybe he really did, but his luck takes a turn for the worse. Griffith finds?? himself tortured over the course of a year, losing most of his physical and likely mental capability in the process.

In the end, Griffith sacrifices everyone he supposedly loved just so he can become very powerful. This isn't one of the biggest betrayals in anime because it reveals a ch??aracter in peak villainy mode, but because of the dep??th involved in his choice. In his position, how many of us wouldn't at least feel very tempted to do the same?

1. Nina's fate (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Early in Fullmetal Alchemist, we're introduced to scientist Shou Tucker, his daughter Nina, and their dog. Everything seems fine at first, with the show giving us a few scenes that cement the daughter and the dog as characters you'd like to have around goi??ng forward.

That's not to be. Shou, out of all characters, reveals himself to be an absolute piece of crap who uses alchemy to merge the bodies of his daughter and their dog. You'd expect this show to come up with a happy resolution to this situation, but the b??est that it does is just put this new creature out of its misery. This whole subplot isn't just one of the saddest moments in anime, but one of the saddest that I can think of and my immediate go-to moment whenever someone asks me about a cruel twist.

What makes this the greatest betrayal in the short but intense history of anime isn't the fact that it's betraying the characters. The scientist never swore loyalty to Edward. You would, however, expect that he'd owe his daughter his love. In that scene, Fullmetal Alchemist is betraying the actual viewers, and the result is a w?ound that'll never?? heal.

Remember the '90s? It's a??lr??eady been 50 years �provided you're reading this in 2040, that is. Jokes aside, one of the best things to break into the American mainstream in the '90s was anime, and it wasn't just because the markets demanded so.

The '90s saw the birth and growth of some of the greatest and most influential anime in existence, so let's look at so??me of the best ??outings of that glorious time.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

If you were a kid watching anime in the '90s, it's likely that Neon Genesis Evangelion taught you the valuable lesson that anime, too, can introduce you to messed up-stuff you didn't expect to see in cartoon form. Even that's reductive, though, as Evangelion is so much more than just characters and viewers screaming into?? the void

Its dark imagery and themes are at the core of what makes Gainax's series special. Evangelion began its life as an answer to the popular mecha series of its time, in which there was always a super-powerful robot perfectly equipped to defeat all the enemies of humankind. Even when these mechas work well, there's always a toll, physical or psychological, to the literal children piloting them. Give this one a try if you want to have a lot of "mecha" action fun and are ready to deal with the consequences.

Serial Experiments Lain

You might not know this series, but you're very likely to have already seen the face of Lain, its protagonist, somewhere on the Internet. That's a very interesting testament to the staying power of this '90s anime about, among many other things, the random disconnect that some feared could engulf society with the predicted massification of Internet use. Lain was ?meant to serve as an inquisitive and thought provoking sci-fi tale, and it totally works as just that, but it's also one hell of a cautionary tale, if that's what you want it to be.

Cowboy Bebop

American anime fans who don't care for American cartoons because "anime is made from the heart, whereas Transformers, He-Man and the like got shows because Hasbro and Mattel wanted to sell you toys" can't say that about Cowboy Bebop. The legendary genre-mixing and bridge building anime got greenlit as a ploy to sell �you won't guess it �spaceship toys, and it ?somehow still ended up as one of the best a?nime ever.

Even though it's over 20 years old now, the animation, the characters, the overall heart of the show and, obviously, the soundtrack, make Cowboy Bebop one of the most memorable experienc??es you can get out of all media.

Initial D

Whether or not it's the actual inspiration, watching Initial D for the first time nowadays might bring you to the realization that you're watching One Punch Man with cars. Yes, while I expected something along the lines of the anime version of Fast And Furious �another series it might have greatly inspired �I ended up getting a hilarious multi-series story about a young driver so good that his main challenge in life is his failure to care about racing as much as all the drift sickos around him. The 3D-animated cars look a bit jarring at first, and the soundtrack is an acquired taste, but this classic? never fails t??o bring in the laughter and the most thrilling racing moments ever put to the small or big screens.

Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon provided the perfect anime starting point for a bunch of '90s kids. It follows the monster-of-the week structure you see in so many American tv shows, but then becomes so much more. It's a comedy at heart, one that follows a legendary klutz who leads a great cast of characters, but, unlike the Pokémon series, Sailor Moon knows when to grow out of its original formula when the plot gets more ser?ious towards the ?end of each season.

Pokémon

Can you even remember the world before Pokémon? I can, and, even though I'm not the biggest Pokémon fan, I must admit that it simply was a less fun place. Pokémon started its one-two-punch quest for global domination with the Game Boy video games, but its anime companion also played a huge role into making Pokémon the juggernaut that it seemingly will never stop being. The plot of each episode is simple and formulaic enough that you could probably get a random gener??ator to make them, but the characters and the cuteness make Ash's quest to become the greatest tra??iner in the world one of the most endearing series of all time.

Dragon Ball Z

Even though DBZ b??egan in â€?9, it had most of its run in the '90s, and it’s one of the first anime people talk ab??out in conversation about '90s anime, so I doubt anyone will be bothered that I'm putting it here.

If there's a neverending debate surrounding who'd win in a fight between Goku and Superman, that's because Goku is the strongest fictional hero from Japan, yes, but also because he's its most popular. There's no comparison when it comes to a positive role model for men in anime (though there are far better parents out there!), nor a more influential shonen. Watch it for the legacy value, yes, but also because it remains an absolute blast to watch. Any person of my age can attest to that as we're all cursed to not be able to spend a whole month without re-watching some banger DBZ clips online.

Berserk

Many series rule all the way to the end, only to culminate in the most lackluster manner imaginable. The original Berserk anime doesn't even have an actual ending, and its still one of the greatest anime of all time. This is one of the darkest and most well-realized anime ideations of European fantasy, and a known influence in the Souls series. Consider giving it a go so long as you're ok?? with some considerably disturbing imagery and themes.

One Piece

One Piece only began airing in 1999, so it didn't really earn its juggernaut status in the '90s. Still, it's clearly the anime that learned more right lessons from Dragon Ball Z, and the o??ne that has been passi?ng them on to so many other anime that came after.

If you're looking for a long-running shonen about pirates that will bring to you the biggest and coolest cast of characters and some of the most memorable moments in anime of the past three decades (and counting), then this is the one piece missing in your life for you.

Digimon Adventure

The original Digimon anime exists because of the success of Pokémon, but, like many of the greats, it's less of a ripoff and more of response. Whereas Pokémon went no further than just showing the daily life of a boy in a quest, Digimon kicked the formula into high gear by throwing a bunch of kids into a cool but incredibly dangerous world. No more waking up to hopefully capture a new Pokémon and earn a new gym badge.

These kids weren't having fun trying to capturing Digimon �they were the ones captured by the world of Digimon, and the only possible quest here was finding a way to escape it. The cast is great, the monster design is edgier and arguably cooler than that of Pokémon and the fights were just much more brutal. Digimon is darker, scarier, and, thus not just a great alternative to Pokémon, but an all-timer on its own right.

Yu Yu Hakusho

I haven't seen Yu Yu Hakusho, but editor Eric Van Allen warned me that the gods of old A??nime might take offense from me not putting it on this list, so you can find his words on it below:

Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic, yet still somehow underrated compared to the other giants of shonen storytelling. Yusuke Urameshi's journey into the afterlife, becoming an Underworld Detective immersed in cases surrounding demons and ghosts in our world, holds up surprisingly well to this day. The art and animation is fantastic, and each battle is a joy to watch, especially in the excellent Dark Tournament arc. Sure, Goku has the Kamehameha, but Yusuke's Spirit Gun is its own kind of iconic. Anyone looking to understand how '90s anime turned a generation of Toonami watchers into anime aficionados should spend some time watching Yu Yu Hakusho.

Initially and informally dubbed Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4, the announcement of DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO elevated fans' excitement levels wel??l over 9,000. As such, we've compiled everything you need to know about this incredible looking fighting game, from its release window to its available platforms.

Despite sporting a different name, DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO is a continuation of the Budokai Tenkaichi series, as it features the same core gameplay as well as carries on the tradition of having a ludicrously sized roster. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 had 161 characters (which includes transformations), and while Sparking! ZERO's roster is incomplete at the time of writing, it's expected to have a similarly gargantuan selection of playable fighters, including at least 11 versions of Goku and 13 versi?on??s of Vegeta.

What is the release date for DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO?

At the time of writing, publisher Bandai Namco nor developer Spike Chunsoft have provided any sort of release window for DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO. All the previous Budokai Tenkaichi games came out either in October or November, but that doesn't necessarily mean Sparking! ZERO will follow the same trend. Given the gameplay trailers released thus far, it doesn't seem too unreasonable to think the game could launch before the end of 2024, though we could s?ee it being pushed into 2025 if Bandai Namco thinks it needs further development time.

What platforms will DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO release for?

DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There's been no mention of bringing it to last-gen consoles—the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One—or the Nintendo Switch, so we can assume it's skipping them so as to take full advantage of the more modern hardware's specs. Considering Sparking! ZERO promises "exceptional visual fidelity," the game likely wo??uldn't look as good as it does if Spike Chunsoft had to get it running on last-gen platforms as well.

Goku has been the lead character in the Dragon Ball franchise since its inception from the late, legendary creator Akira Toriyama in 1984. Though the Saiyan almost seems eternal with his youthful look, he is getting a bit older. If you want to know how old Goku is throughout every Dragon Ball series, you're in the right place.

How old is Goku in the original Dragon Ball?

The very start of the Dragon Ball manga and anime ?series kicks off with the young Goku meeting Bulma for the first time. At this point in the story, Goku is around 11 or 12 years old (depending on the version and translation). Regardless, this initial series sees a lot of growth in Goku throughout his youngest years.

The preteen Saiyan learns under Master Roshi and eventually enters his first World Martial Arts Tournament at around 13 years old. The series continues t??hrough to him fighting the Red Ribbon Army, defeating the Demon King Piccolo at 16 years old, and the series ends with him as an adult at 19.

Goku’s Dragon Ball Z age, explained

This sequel anime series kicks off with a brief time gap between Piccolo’s defeat and Raditz and Nappa arriving on Earth. At the start of this series, Goku is around 24 years old, with his son, Gohan, about four year?s old.

The series goes throughout the years, with one of the largest gaps being between the Cell and Majin Buu Sagas. Goku’s return during the Buu Saga puts him around 37 years old, as he fights to save Earth once more. The series ends with a time jump 10 years into the future, where we see Goku at around 4?7 years old.

Goku’s age in Dragon Ball Super

The 2015 ongoing sequel to Dragon Ball Z actually takes place in the 10-year time gap between the end of the Buu Saga and Goku showing up to train Uub. As such, Goku is around 37 years old when the God of Destruction, Beerus, shows up on Earth. Goku ends up around 47 years old once again near the end of this series at the time of the Super Hero movie, just before Uub’s appearance.

How old is Goku in Dragon Ball GT?

This much-maligned sequel to Dragon Ball Z has some complicated situations surro??unding. The Japanese version of the series notes it takes place five years after Goku runs off with Uub, while the English translation puts it at around 10 years later. As such, Goku is either 52 or 57 years old at the start, depending on which version you’re watching.

However, as you may know, Goku doesn’t stay this ??older figure for long. The Black Star Dragon Balls turn Goku way back in time to around the physical age of his start in the franchise. He spends most of this anime in a physical form of around 11 or 12 years old again.

With the sad passing of Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama, Final Fantasy XIV players have come together across the world to pay tribu??te to a hero and legend of the anime sphere. Since news of Toriyama's pas?sing broke, players have gathered outside the Pugilist’s guild in Ul’dah, many dressed as some of the creator's most beloved characters.

Although best known for creating the foundational world of Dragon Ball Z, Toriyama was also renowned for his work on much-loved RPGs. From his character designs in Chrono Trigger to striking designs in Dragon Quest, Toriyama touched artists and fans within the world of anime, manga, an??d video games. 

It doesn’t matter which server you play on, it’s hard to miss the gathering of players in Ul’dah, decked out in cosplay in homages to the life’s works of Toriyama. There’s no end to the Goku outfits, and hundreds of people donning the Slime Crown and Thug’s Mug glamour items, inspired by Dragon Quest, and rewarded during the B?reaking Brick Mountains event last held in 2021. 

As they always do in sad times like these, players are ut?ilising the Wanderer’s Campfire minion to light the streets of Ul’dah, and they’re likely to remain in their chosen spot for hours, or even days, in remembrance of Toriyama and all he gave to the world during his life. 

It’s not the first time Final Fantasy XIV players have come together in honor of a treasured artist; back in 2021, the community came together after the death of Kentaro Miura, creator of the infamous Manga Berserk. Thousands of Dark Knights on every server lined the streets of Ul’dah in his memory, just as we’re seeing them do today. The community also gathered again for one of their own, Stephen Critchlow, who voiced Count Edmont de Fortemps in the Heavensward expansion.

Bandai Namco Entertainment and Spike Chunsoft revealed the new chapter in the Dragon Ball Z universe as Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. It may sound like a new energy drink but nope, it's more action fighting in the Budokai Tenkaichi series. Players will be able to learn and master a roster of playable DBZ characters with their own signature abilities, transformations, and techniques. In a cool twist, the arenas will also crumble around you as y?ou fight in them.

I'm admittedly way behind on anything Dragon Ball but this looks like exac??tly what fans of those games would want, with single-player and online multi-player modes.

No release timeframe was given but Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero will launch on PC, PlaySt??ation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which arrived at the very start of 2020, is still getting DLC. You know how DBZ games go!

This one is called "Ground Battle," and it's billed as the fifth major DLC for the game. As the name might suggest, you're literally fighting on the ground here, which is a Godsend given how flight-heavy the game is in general. It's silly that this is the focus of a DLC three and a half years after the game's release (and not as part of the base package), but it's here all the same. Sometimes Dragon Ball Z games (or Bandai Namco anime bra?wlers in general) can give EA Sports titles a run for their money!

"Unleash your power in a new stage, 'Ground Battle' of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot's DLC 5! Experience intense fights with uniq?ue rules in the World Tournament. Master epic moves, defeat your foes, and rise to victory! Get ready for non-stop action!'

While Ground Battle was announced several weeks ago, it just got an official date t??hanks to Bandai Namco's German Twitter account: August 17.

A short history of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC

Note that this is all part of the "second battle pass" for the game. The first concluded in June of 2021 with a Trunks-focused DLC, with the second season pass arriving ??in early 20??23. Ground Battle is the second add-on for the second pass (what is this, the 2010s?), and the third and final DLC will presumably come out sometime later in 2023.

Rock the Dragon

There was a pretty big surprise for all Senzu Bean lovers this weekend, as Bandai Namco dropped a reveal for a brand new title in the dormant fighting game series Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. The new title did not receive an official title, release date, or platform reveal,? but we did get a brief teaser.

The short, one-minute teaser features footage from some classic Budokai Tenkaichi titles being played on a CRT television, before the image blows up into fullscreen HD with protagonist Goku going Super Duper Super Saiyan, (or something). This clip is then followed by the brief message "Get Ready for Battle... A New Sparking Begins". Dragon Ball Sparking! is, of course, the series Japanese moniker.

Originally developed by Spike Chunsoft and launched on the PS2 platform back in 2005, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi was the first modernized fighting game set within the legendary anime universe, and saw a roster of familiar heroes and villains going at it on a unique 3D plane, replicating the hyper-dynamic look of the show. The game would receive two sequels and several spin-offs, the latest release being 2012's Dragon Ball Z: For Kinect. The series would essentially be superseded by the fantastic Arc System Works fighter Dragon Ball FighterZ, though die-hard fans have clamored for its return??.

Goku may get a gun

A new crossover is headed to Epic Games' Fortnite, and it will rock the dragon. After a ton of rumors, chatter, and speculation, it looks like Dragon Ball is arriving in Fortnite.

The Fortnite Twitter account posted this ominous image of Shenron, the wish-granting dragon, today. "Speak," it says. "Na??me your wish..."

As for now, it's not clear what exactly ??this entails. More info looks to be arriving next week, on August 16.

Speculation has run rampant over Dragon Ball arriving in Fortnite for a while. The leaker community around Epic's battle royale discovered a bunch of files that pointed towards skins and cosmetics, even including the Capsule Corp logo.

Rock the dragon

As for who's up, I think an obvious answer would be Goku. The same way you can't do Naruto and not include the major players, Goku and likely Vegeta are sound bets. I'd like some less obvious characters too, like Piccolo, Bulma, or Yamcha, but those would probably be relegated to a second pack, much like some of the Naruto options were.

I'm hoping for some kind of in-game event as well, whether it's another special map like th??e Hidden Leaf Village or possibly an in-game happening. King Kai willing, we get a Kamehameha weapon.

But I have to say, seeing some Dragon Ball content drop in Fortnite sounds pretty exciting. Growing up on Toonami instilled quite a bit of nostalgia for the series in me, and it was doubled, maybe even tripled, with the love letter that is Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Nexon's absurdist, highly enjoyable fighting title DNF Duel launched yesterday, and it wasn't even 24 hours before modders were already adding popular anime and gaming heroes into the PC edition of fast-paced ?fighter �such is the way of the FGC and its incredibly talented modding community.

The first that caught my eye was this wonderful skin of Persona 5's button-down bookworm Makoto Nijima, whose skin fits like a glove over DNF's martial arts cutie-pie, Striker. Created by modder Monkeygigabuster, the skin sees the school president rocking her "Queen" biker persona, throwing out fists and feet in keeping with her own martial arts expertise. Another popular modder, Ryn, has also opened the door for crossover fighters wanting to show up on DNF Duel's wild battleground. Ryn is already working on a fresh DNF mod, which will see Dragon Ball Z's Goku going Super Saiyan in the guise of DNF's poster boy, Berserker. There's still some work to be done to complete Goku's moveset, but he's already looking pretty comfortable. Mods such as these are made somewhat easier thanks to Arc System Works' utilizing similar software for its games. So don't be surprised if we see more Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear, or BlazBlue characters in the future.

DNF Duel, which is now available on PlayStation and PC platforms, is a fighter spun-off from the Korean MMO series, Dungeon Fighter Online. As I stated in my review yesterday, it is a highly aggressive but very accessible entry to the fighting game genre, that embraces a sense of proactive combat and wanton chaos. ??The community is only just beginning to get stuck into the new title, which is surprising some players with its fast-paced nature and explosive visu??als. In general, feedback has been very positive.

Oh, and if you're wondering who is to??p tier, the answer is Everybody.

Bandai Namco is hosting four PC-only sessions starting December 3, and sign-ups are open

The curious one-versus-seven survival game Dragon Ball: The Breakers is hosting a PC beta test on Steam, so if you like the promise of an asymmetric game that lets you terrorize other players as Frieza, Buu, or Cell, then you ?should put your name in the hat.

Much like the recent Elden Ring test, Bandai Namco is now taking email sign-ups on the Dragon Ball: The Breakers website. This is a closed b??eta, and while the full game w??ill also be playable on consoles (even Nintendo Switch), this test run is limited to just Steam.

A??ssuming you do get an invite, when can you play? The sessions are fairly limited.

Here's a beta trailer to spark your interest, though I'll be honest �this idea is so out-there yet weirdly ?fitting, I think a lot of us are conceptually sold. It's more a matter of the team capitalizing on the idea and executing it well. I love that this project got greenlit.

On the survivor side, Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a race to find hidden power keys, then protect a startup system from the raider (the iconic DBZ villain) long enough to activate the Super Time Machine. The more keys you find, the quicker the startup system will go. As a backup option for whenever the raider inevitably destroys the startup system (on account of, again, being an all-powerful entity), there's a way? to use beacons to summon an emergency time machine �just one at a time! �which players can selfishly use to flee on their own or escape together. There's also an overall time limit for the match, too.

On the raider front, if every survivor is wiped out through a mix of passive and active skills, it's considered a "complete victory." I'm immediately into the idea of p?laying as Cell, who starts in larval form and munches on civilian NPCs and survivors to evolve. Every time an evolution happens, the raider can wipe out an area of the map, "and the range where survivors can move becomes narrower, making the action more tense in the latter half of the game." Cell?'s final form can do a Perfect Kamehameha, which just sounds fun.

Another mechanic I'm into: props! Survivors can use the Change skill to transform into random junk and hide in plain sight. It's often tense and hilarious. I am on the fence about Dragon Change, a limited-time ability that requires? setup but essentially lets normal folks turn into Vegeta or Piccolo for a bit. (I get why the familiar faces are here, though.)

After watching the beta rundown video, I'm glad it exists �it feels necessary. Dragon Ball: The Breakers has a lot of ideas to juggle, especially on the survivor side, and if you're going to play, it's worth getting a high-level overview before stumbling into a? live match.

Cell seems pretty terrifying when you're not a Super Saiyan warrior

Dragon Ball games usually put you in the shoes of Goku or another of Earth's heroes, fighting off threats and powering up. But Bandai Namco has announced a new game, Dragon Ball: The Breakers, that shows what i?t's like ??for the average person in the middle of all that chaos.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is an asymmetrical survival action game coming to Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC, with next-gen compatibility, in 2022. It pits seven Survivors against a single Raider, a notable villain from the Dragon Ball se??ries. The Survivors try to use power-ups, weapons, and vehicles to evade the Raider while finding Super Time Machines to escape; the Raider, meanwhile, will try to destroy the Survivors.

It's a similar set-up to Dead By Daylight and other asymmetrical survival horror games. The novelty, though, comes from it being set in the Dragon Ball universe. The Raider can play as characters like Cell, Buu, or Frieza. Survivors shown in the trailer include Oolong and Bulma. It's Dragon Ball multiplayer survival horror.

You'll be able to customize your Survivor using cosmetics you get, either via in-game credits or real-world money. Bandai Namco says that you'll also be able to link save data with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, t??hough it doesn't clarify how exactly tha??t works.

It's a pretty bonkers set-up for a new Dragon Ball game, but the more I've thought about it, it's at least different and interesting. Sure, plenty of games have told the story of Goku, but how many show what it's like to be the average person on the ground when Cell attack??s?

You'll be able to experience the horror first-hand when Dragon Ball: The Breakers lands in 2022. It's coming to Xbox One, Pl??ayStat??ion 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, and the Xbox and PlayStation versions will be forward compatible with next-gen consoles.

Stumble Force

Bandai Namco has announced that it is making moves to shut down support for its anime crossover fighter, Jump Force. Sales of the game, its DLC, and virtual currency will end ?across all platforms in all territories on February 7, 2022. The majority of online services for the fighter will be shutting down on August 24, 2022.

Developed by Spike Chunsoft, Jump Force seemed like a "can't miss" prospect when announced: a one-on-one fighting title that would see heroes and villains from a variety of mega-popular anime series get-together for an almighty throwdown. Starring poster guys and gals from franchises such as Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and Hunter x Hunter, Jump Force seemed like a title that would capture the heart?s and wallets of even the most casual of anime fans.

Unfortunately, upon release in 2019, it quickly became apparent that Jump Force was no Dragon Ball FighterZ, receiving universal middle-of-the-road reviews from both critics and fans. Despite building upon its stag?geringly good roster of recognizable faces, it just wasn't a particularly engaging fighter, and swiftly vanished among the better anime-infused fighting games that were on the market. Bandai Namco has not offered ??a clear reason for the shutdown, so we do not know whether juggling all of the different character licenses plays a part in its decision.

As of February 7, Jump Force and all related DLC will be delisted from the store and will remain unpurchaseable, though players who hold licenses will still be able to redownload their chosen content. As of August 24, the multiplayer lobby, clan battle, leaderboards, online news, reward center, and in-game store will all be permanently closed down. In regards to online multiplayer, players will be able to play online Vs. matches, but will not be a?fforded access to lobbies or Ranked.

Nearly four years old and still kicking ass

One of the better and most ensuring fighting games of our generation, Bandai Namco's Dragon Ball FighterZ, is now available on PC and Xbox via the Xbox Game Pass service. The base version of the scrapper is now live for all subscribers.

Released in January 2018, the Arc System Works-developed tag-fighter quickly won over both Dragon Ball fans and the general fighting game community with its compelling mechanics, stunning anime-quality visuals, and lightning-fast gameplay. a few months shy of its fourth anniversary, Dragon Ball FighterZ remains an incredibly popular fighter on both the online and competitive circuit and has �ultimately �set t?he bar for media-licensed fighting game??s, perhaps forever.

Since launch, DBFZ has seen regular balance updates alongside almost 20 additional DLC characters �almost all named "Goku." The Xbox Game Pass edition does not include any of these roster additions, but still offers a meaty roster of heroes and villains from the legendary manga/anime series. All-new superstar Android 21 is in the mix, so you'll be just fine. Players can enjoy offline and online battles, as well as DBFZ's hefty campaign and range of training and challenge modes. 'Coming this autumn'

Remember when people found evidence of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot coming to Switch, and Bandai Namco denied it? Then it was promptly announced for Switch a few months after? Good times.

Well it definitely does exist, and the publisher has reconfirmed its launch date of September 24 for the Switch platform. Note that the title of the game is Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot + A New Power Awakens Set, denoting the DLC that wi??ll be ??available at launch.

What won't be ready for launch however is the Dragon Ball Card Warriors expansion, wh??ich was doled out as a free update for the prior versions of the game. Buried at the end of the new trailer below was a notice, stating that it was "coming t?his autumn for Nintendo Switch."

Dragon Ball Card Warriors is a fully-fledged card game buried within Kakarot, and could have been a standalone download release in another universe. The above overview is actually a perf?ect introduction, and shows how deep this well goes for a mode that was added as free DLC. It even has two forms of ranked play!

I actually think this might be a Trojan Horse for a future standalone. All of the characters in Card Warriors are evergreen, and Dragon Ball fans will get this the time of day no matter when it's released. I just hope that if ??Bandai Namco does?? go down that road, it isn't a monkey's paw situation. No gacha or random paid packs please!

Trunks still has one of the best entrances in anything, ever

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is still a thing, and Bandai Namco isn't missing any chances to pump out as much DLC as possible for it. Amid several large updates for the game, the publisher also just dropped its third?? major DLC.

It's called "Trunks: Warrior of Hope," and it's dubbed the "final DLC drop" for the game. The trailer below gives us a glimpse into what it entails, as the premise is set around a "familiar world with a different timeline," in which the Androids are in control. Weirdly, it seems as if Alexis Tipton is voicing young Future Trunks instead? of Eric Vale: the la??tter of which is the fan favorite.

As a reminder, the season pass is still $24.99, but hopefully we'll get an eventual "GOTY Edition" at some point. There's also th??e curious case of the Switch port, which Bandai Nam??co says doesn't exist. If it is real, and it does get announced, I can se??e them doing a GOTY version then.

Rock the dragon: but only on certain systems

Wait what? And it's gone!

In case you missed it, Bandai Namco's Latin America Instagram account (what a wild world we live in with global brands on social) had a little snafu recently. In a new ad for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot (which came out la??st year but is getting new DLC soon), a conspicuous "Switch" logo was spotted? at ?the bottom.

Now, as we know, Kakarot is only out on PC/PlayStation/Xbox. B?ut is there a Switch version in the cards, perhaps for a Game of the Year-like release bundled with that DLC? Not anytime soon, at least. Bandai Namco acknowledged the mistake, and noted that the logo was added in error.

It is strange, because Kakarot on Switch is entirely believable. It's not the most graphically intensive game, plus?, Bandai Namco has made an effort to bring a ton of games to Switch these past few years; even from ?third-party developer partners.

Although it was a "mistake" to have the logo on this particular ad campaign, I wouldn't be surprised to learn about? a port down the line.

'The Warrior of Hope'

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot launched at the beginning of 2020, and it's been steadily getting a few major updates here and there. It even got a new card game mode! But now things are winding down a bit with what is seemingly the last DLC, which will once again feature Trunks; just like the Xenoverse 2 add-on due out this month.

It's called "Trunks: The Warrior of Hope," and will feature a time-bending storyline?? that involves the? Androids winning the confrontation from the anime arc. To wit, Gohan and Trunks will defend the honor of the Earth against the Androids.

You can get a quick rundown of the setup, which involves the Androids killing several key members of the Dragon Ball cast, with Trunks and Gohan chilling on a mountainside, ready to stri??ke and have their ven??geance.

"What if..." Marvel-esque stories are perfect for this show, as there are so many directions Bandai Namco c??ould take it. And it seems like they have carte blanche to draw upon whatever timelines they want, so why not experiment more?

Warrior of Hope is due out in the "summer of 2021" still, and will put a cap on the DLC for Kakarot, unless we hear otherwise.

If you answered...2016, you are correct! Bandai Namco is showing once again that Dragon Ball games can be a decent investment, time-wise, as the?y're peddling even more DLC very soon. In addition to a free update, "Legendary Pack 1" will launch as paid DLC on March 18. It'll feature Toppo and Pikk?on, as well as a Janemba mascot.

The trailer below will give you a quick overview of what's up, with a decent chunk of footage and story bits. The publisher notes that this pack will i??nclude a "new story," and will feature Trunks battling against Fu. There's even a little teaser at the end!

Pikkon is out in spring 2021

You can believe there are three games that are still being actively developed for in the Dragon Ball Z series? Such is the power of those balls.

In addition to FighterZ and Kakarot, Xenoverse 2 (which came out in 2016) is still getting DLC! At th??is point, the roster is insanely impressive and expansive, dating back to nearly every era of the show. You have your stock big ones like Trunks, Goku, and Gohan (all shapes and sizes!), but they also delve into minor or tertiary baddies like Zarbon and Lord Slug.

You can add Pikkon to that list now too! According to Weekly Jump in Japan, Pikkon is headed into the arena in spring of 2021. Yes, we're coming up on five years of active development for this project. It's good to be a Dragon Ball fan, as there's always something new?? to enjoy.

I still remember playing Dragon Ball Z: The Legend?? on the PlayStation for the first time and being blown away with just how many cast members it had; compared to the SNES fighters I had experienced before it. Sometimes there's something magical about stepping into the shoes of a character that's relatively obscure, but you're big on.

Coming later this year

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, like most DBZ-related media, is alive and kicking. And it's about to get its second?? major DLC pa??ck this year.

In case you missed it, Bandai Namco revealed that the second DLC is called "A New Power Awakens - Part 2," and the main gimmick is 1vs100+ battles; where your Z Fighter is facing off against a giant horde. You'll gain new abilities to boot, with potential additional content to sift through beyond the upcoming mode, which is titled "Mob ??Battle."

Now, the publisher is ready to give us our first real look at the DLC via screenshots, which we've gathered in the gallery below. According to Bandai Namco, you'll square off against Frieza (Golden) and the Friez??a Force, which seems to be the titular "mob" in th??e Mob Battle gametype.

While the first DLC was fine for what it was in many respects, this one looks a lot more enticing and way more in the spirit of Dragon Ball. I'd probably play a full game based on this concept, as long as th??e "mobs" remain interesting and dynamic. We'll see if they pull it off for this DLC later this fall when it launches.

It's out later this year

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the gift that keeps on giving: so long as you're willin?g to keep it installed and pay up.

Despite its release earlier this year in January it's still going with DLC, having hosted several free quality of life updates (like a cute time machine that lets you revisit old missions) ?and a major DLC pack. Now Bandai Namco is nearly ready to unleash "Part 2??" of the New Power Awakens add-on, and it sounds like a doozy.

Based on a new article from V-Jump (as reported by ryokutya2089 and translated by Gematsu), the DLC will contain a mode called "Mob Battle," and it sounds like every DBZ fan's dream. It's all in the name: you'll take on a group of over 100 enemies who will all take you on at th?e same time, but you'll have extra powers at your disposal to make up for it. That list of abilities includes a "Maximum Kamehameha," which I really need to see happen in-game as soon as possible.

Kakarot has its faults, but it's shaping up to be a fun trip down memory lane and then some, with the extra content. Hopefully more free updates on the way to smooth things over, because at that point it would make a killer "Game of the Year Edition" gift for any Dragon Ball fan.

Deck the Dragon

Bandai Namco has announced a free update headed to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot this fall that will add a new card-fighting mini-game to the open-world anime RPG. The "Dragon Ball Card Warriors" mode will allow players to build a deck of notable DBZ characters and abilities, before challenging each other in casual a??nd ranked online battles and monthly Budokai tournaments.

In addition, the publisher announced that a second DLC expansion will also launch for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot this fall. Following on from the previous expansion released back in April, "A New Power Awakens: Part 2" will see the Frieza Army invade Earth, ?? led by super-strengthened boss character Golden Frieza. In order to face this menace?, Goku and Vegeta will be forced to unleash their almighty Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (SSGSS) forms, before taking on Frieza in a battle of the titans.

Both the paid "A New Power Awakens: Part 2" DLC and the free card-fighting mini-game will launch this fall. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Fancy a Beerus?

Bandai Namco has released a trailer for previously teased DLC expansion A New Power: Part 1,  launching today in open-world anime adventure Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

In this first piece? of additional content, fans will see eternal rivals Goku and Vegeta team up to take down everyone's least favourite moggy, Lord Beerus, in a battle that developers promise will test players' skill-level to its absolute limits. Rocking Level 250, Beerus is not only the toughest opponent in the game to date, but will also limit the amount of stat-boosting items players can bring? to the fact. Better knuckle up for this kitty.

In addition to the Lord Beerus story content, the new DLC will allow players to access both Super Saiyan God Goku and Super Saiyan God Vegeta while traversing the Kakarot universe. So after Beerus kicks your ass from pillar to post, maybe adopt this form and go smash some weaker enemies to feel better about yourself. A New Power: Part 1 drops today as part of the Dragon Ball Z Kakarot season pass.

Bandai Namco's open-world anime adventure Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be getting its first major piece of DLC next week, with the arrival of the A New Power Awakens: Part 1 expansion on PC and console platforms.

The new story content will see rivals Goku and Vegeta forced to team up to take on the irrepressible God of Destruction, Lord Beerus, who is making his debut in the Kakarot universe. Set at level 250, the malicious moggy is not to be trifled with, and it will take every bit of the combined Saiyans' powers to take him down. Even Kakarot producer Hara Ryosuke had their struggles, noting that they only beat Bee??rus themselves once in ten tries. Yikes!

The story content will also give players access to two new forms, Super Saiyan God Goku and Super Saiyan God Vegeta, both of which can be used at will throughout the game thereafter. The DLC arrives April 28, and is available exclusively through the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot season pass.

Tom Nook has more bells than ever

I don't think anyone wasn't expecting Nintendo's colourful communal title Animal Crossing: New Horizons to be a success, but the reality is even more surprisin?g, as the long-awaited Switch release is abso??lutely killing it in sales, debuting at number one in the UK charts.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, in terms of physical boxed sales, New Horizons has sold more copies in its first week of launch than the launch sales of all previous Animal Crossing-branded games combined. New Horizons is also the biggest launch game in Nintendo Switch history (if you don't combine the sales of both Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield as one release).

Here in the U.K., this success has seen New Horizons debut at the top of the UK Charts, leading the Top Ten's first major shakeup in months. New Horizons is followed by another new entry, Bethesda's gut-churning Doom Eternal, which also burst onto the scene, ultimately landing? at number two.

Activision's Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled also re-entered the Top Ten at numbers seven and nine respectively. Microsoft race Forza Horizon 4 appears at number eight, while Take 2's wild-west sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 moseyed back into town at number ten. Last week's number one, Sony's Nioh 2, has already left the Top Ten, as has Nintendo's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

SSG as DLC

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot just hit 1.5 million copies sold: you think Bandai Namc??o of all publishers would just let that game sit? Nah.

While we knew that new DLC was on the way, vaguely, a new issue of V-??Jump has confirmed exactly what that first burst of add-ons entail. According to V-Jump, t??he first episode is called "A New Awakening (Part One): Whis' Training," and you can access it regardless of whether or not you've finished the game.

Whis, of course, is one of the first new characters that joined the Dragon Ball Super series in the form of its debut film, Battle of Gods. In the DLC you can train against him for XP (and subsequently fight his charge, Beerus), which in turn can help you unlock Super Saiyan God Goku, which changes your fighting style and power. According to the Gematsu translation, you can use thi?s newfoun??d glory in the main campaign beyond the confines of the DLC.

While training isn't the flashiest motif, I love DLCs w?here you can bring things back into the main game, so this sounds neat on paper.

Sword and Sorcery epic debuts at #1

Team Ninja's Nioh 2 has gotten off to an excellent start in the U.K., debuting straight in at number one in the high street retail charts, dethroning Nintendo's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX after just one week in the top spot.

The excellent mystical adventure sequel is one of few bright spots in an otherwise predictable Top Ten. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Electronic Arts' FIFA 20 continue to jockey for the top spots both titles have occupied for months, while mainstays like Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V and Nintendo's Luigi's Mansion 3 bring up the rear.

Speaking of Nintendo, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe jumped f??rom number 8 to number 2, and one can't help but wonder whether the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is encouraging the sales of "family-friendly" titles, as parents fruitlessly try and keep their children indoors.

This week sees the launch of two major releases, Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Bethesda's DOOM Eternal, both of which have the potential to secure a debut number one. The people are super excited for New Horizons, but Doom Eternal is available on multiple platforms... Place your bets, I suppose.
