Earth Defense Force 6 is among the strangest games I’ve ever played. I don’t mean strange in an Earth Defense Force kind of way; I’m no stranger to EDF. To explain how fascinating this game is, I’m going to get deep into spoiler territory. There’s no way around it.

For those of you who would rather not have the game spoiled, here’s a spoiler-free summary of my thoughts: It’s Earth Defense Force 5 if one of its developers woke up from a fever dream with deranged inspiration for how to extend it by nearly 150 missions. Even if you finished EDF 5 a few months ago, you might go into EDF 6 and not see much has changed aside from more dirt, a new narrative?, and a couple of other small additions. It is not much of an ?upgrade, but you couldn’t ask for a better continuation.

But calling EDF 6 a continuation is greatly underselling it. It does, for better and worse, build directly on top of the previous game, ??but it does so in such a novel and bizarre way that you can’t help but forgive it.

Earth Defense Force 6 (PS4, PS5, PC [Reviewed])
Developer: Sandlot Games
Publisher: D3Publisher
Released: July 25, 2024
MSRP: $59.99

In terms of non-spoilers that I can tell you, I might as well cover some of the things in the trailers. Earth Defense Force 6 starts off ?a few years afte??r the last game. Humanity drove the invading Primers off. However, the war took a massive toll and left the world in ruins. With only 10% of the population remaining, humanity is struggling and failing to get society working again. There has been no rebirth of civilization.

You start off trying to protect these ruins from monsters who were left behind after the invasion. It’s established that you’re playing as the same protagonist from the last game. Even though you “savedthe Earth, only one scientist dude remembers you, and he dresses like one of the executives from American Psycho for some reason.

It’s bleak. Your commanding officer keeps commending you and your teammates for avoiding civilian casualties, even though the city you protect is just burnt-out ruins without a person in sight. Like in most EDF games, they make a big deal when the newest, hottest tech is being rolled out on the battlefield, but when it actually does, it’s just recycled mech t??orsos mounted on the back of trucks. It’s an amusing bit of self-awareness that manages to hammer home how much humanity’s victory really sucks.

At this point, the game is just EDF in grey-brown ruins. It still features gameplay centered around defeating hordes of monsters and picking up the weapons and armor that fall out of their pockets. There are four classes Ranger, Wi?ng Diver, Air Raider, and Fencer the s??ame as there was in the last two games. The new terrain isn’t pleasant to look at, but it does feel unique compared to the cities of previous games.

That’s it. EDF in wrecked cities is all y?ou get for a little over a dozen missions in the beginning.

//youtu.be/XVUhQ9lHkss?feature=shared

Okay, so now we’re going into spoiler territory,? and this is where things get really weird.

The Primers show up for a second invasion since humanity is already on its last legs. The st??orytelling gets a bit sketchy at this point, but the important detail is that humanity is fucked. ?There aren’t enough people left to mount a defense against the Primersrenewed attack.

As a last ditch, you and your fellow soldiers attempt to bring down a big, ring-like ship. However, when you destroy its flashing weak spot, you’re suddenly transported back in time. Back in time to Earth Defense Force 5.

That isn’t hyperbole. You quite literally, with no stretching of the truth, get taken back to the EDF 5 mission, "Turning Point". Some of the dialogue is tweaked slightly in a very sly way that actually ties into the new narrative, but note-for-note, the mission is exact. I could show you side-by-side screenshots of the EDF 5 and EDF 6 versions, and only the slightly different HUD would tip you off as to whi??ch was which. Even the placement of the cars in parking ??lots is the same. It is the same map, it is the same mission.

At this point, it’s hard to tell if this is extremely stupid or remarkably genius, which is generally how I’d define the Earth Defense Force series as a whole.

If you find recycling of assets from previous games vexing (I don’t know why it would), then Earth Defense Force 6 will break you.

I want to be clear: Sandlot isn’t going to make you play through EDF 5 again. Things quickly diverge. You may think that the first thing you do after arriving from the future is warn people and impart your knowledge of the enemy’s glowing weak ??spots, but there’s fat chance of that. You’re a silent protagonist, after all. What are you going to do? Communicate through ??emotes?

Instead, it’s the aliens who are trying to change the future. They send back their latest human-killing tech to make sure they win this time, and they do, so you eventually wind up right back at the start of the EDF 6 but in an even bleaker situati??on where hu?manity just lost.

As it turns out, the guy dressed like the executive vice president of the company joined you on your quest backward through time. So, he convinces you to attack the ring-ship at the same moment you did last time, which sends you back in time again to the same moment. You once again get remixes of EDF 5.

This time, everyone thinks you’r??e so damned amazing because you know the weakness to all the monsters. You’re basically Doomguy at this point; killing aliens and giant ants has been all you’ve done for years, so you’re just amazing at it. The scientist dressed like an accountant also uses his future knowledge to introduce new weapons into the EDF’s arsenal in an attempt to change fate.

And that’s what Earth Defense Force 6 is. It’s Groundhog’s Day with giant ants and bigger firepower. But what is strange?r is that it works.

My biggest problem with the Earth Defense Force games has always been the repetition of the titles. They’re invariably a million missions long, and the formula begins to wear thin. The addition of new classes, dynamic enemies that will run away or try to flank you, and lots of big glowing weak points have done a lot to stretch the formula, but by the time you hit the fiftieth mission, most of the grass has been worn down to a brown, dusty path. EDF 6 is approximately 2 million missions long (147, to be exa??ct), and this is still a problem.

Where the constant moving back in time helps things is that you’re repeatedly pushing through EDF microcosms. Each loop is still long, but it leaves you waiting in anticipation to see how ?things will be different. Humanity?? keeps getting its ass kicked, but will this finally be the loop where things change? How are they going to get out of this pickle? It’s easier to be patient when it’s only, like, 30 or 40 missions to find out.

The fact that the narrative also has you break from the seriesusual super-competent but otherwise common soldier approach also helps you feel powerful. Each time you get sent back to EDF 5, your commanding officers and fellow soldiers become more and more bewildered and impressed that you know how to shoot at obvious weak points. It’s easy for a protagonist to get lost in the story of a world getting burnt to cinders beneath the heel of an unstoppable threat, but Earth Defense Force 6 slowly builds you up until you are clearly a worthy adversary against a world-ending i?nvasion.

Earth Defense Force 6 railgun

That’s not to say that the storytelling is any better in EDF 6. Pretty much every development is told through conversations on the radio that you’re not any part of. Much of the dialogue is entirely daft to the point where you can’t tell when it’s being deliberately ridiculous and when it’s trying to be somewhat serious. On other occas?ions, it’s difficult to know if? a character is trying to communicate important information or if they’re making an in-character, off-base observation that isn’t based in the reality of the plot.

You can, at least, catch enough of the gist to underst?and what is going on. Tannoy is just a very distracting way of telling? a story.

It’s extremely disjointed. Things never really flow from one mission to the next, and NPCs rarely mention previous events. It also does that thing that happens in every EDF where you can’t kill something until it’s the designated time to do so. It’s impressive that Earth Defense Force 6 (and all games in the core series) tell grand stories without the use of cutscenes, setpieces, or relatable characters, but it doesn’t mean it does it particularly well.

Earth Defense Force 6 teleportation towers

Going into Earth Defense Force 6, I didn’t expect I’d spend this much time talking about the narrativ??e. If I listed what I love about the series, its story would be extremely low on that list. However, it’s amazing how much a different narrative framework improved the formula. The gameplay is still extremely repetitive, and the constant feed of new monster types only does so much to keep it fresh. But the constant unpredictable twists and turns gi?ve reason enough to dig through its almost 150 levels. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, it pulls out something completely bizarre.

That said, I still wish Sandlot would shake things up. A metagame framework, like something from an XCOM game, would do a lot to lift up the destruction and violence. Failing that, we’re long overdue for a new Robot Alchemic Drive.

Earth Defense Force 6 is easily the best game the series has seen so far, and it attains that title in an unexpected way. While its gameplay could be charitably described as a continuation of EDF 5 (or a complete rehash, if you want to be mean for some reason), the way it uses its narrative to repeatedly spin things in surprising ways drastically changes the feel and flow of the mission-to-mission gameplay. It’s still the same loveable mix of possibly deliberate tokusatsu campiness and jank, but something’s different this time. If you've never been able to decide if the EDF series is completely stupid or remarkably brilliant, this will keep you wondering, but also ?fasci??nated.

You can sink dozens to hundreds of hours into Helldivers 2, but at some point, you will feel burnt out. So, if you want to play other games like Helldivers 2 to continue the action, check our list below.

Games to play if you like Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 is an amalgamation of a bunch of other games in one, but these games encapsulate some of the ??greatest aspects of it. Whether it’s by killing hordes of enemies, being ultra-patriotic for your world, or be??ing a badass who can come out on top against all odds, any of these titles will be a hit for fans of Arrowhead's wildly successful game.

Earth Defense Force 5

Alien invasion? Check. A huge arsenal of weapons to take them down with? Check. Over-the-top gameplay with little downtime between huge firefights? Check. Earth Defense Force 5 should be on your radar if you’re into all-out horde shooters like Helldivers 2. If you can get?? some friends together for a cooperative session, it’ll be some hilarious, chaotic fun.

Even though the sixth installme?nt of the franchise?? just came out, EDF5 is the more ??definitive experience?? until things go better for 6.

Duke Nukem 3D

The Duke Nukem franchise definitely started to get sour after the 90s and it’s a shame. 3D was the last solid iteration of the series, and it shows, being a boomer-shooter that stood alongside the greats like Doom, Marathon, and Turok in the 90s.

There’s a reason why Duke Nukem 3D got a port to later consoles in 2016 in the 20th Anniversary World Tour game. It washes away the sins of Duke Nukem Forever from 2011.

Deep Rock Galactic dwarves

Deep Rock Galactic

It’s a bit of a stretch, but Deep Rock Galactic is one of those games that reminds me a lot of Helldivers 2. You and your teammates are insi?de a hub, perfecting builds, seeing what you need next to progress, and planning your next mission.

Once the setups are complete, you all dive in together inside a mine and complete all sorts of objectives with lots of vermin to deal with along the way. The gameplay loop is very much the same as Helldivers 2: prep your squad, go into a m??ission with modifiers and stuff to kill, and ext?ract with stuff chasing you.

Doom Eternal Best FPS Games 2023

Doom reboots (2016, Eternal)

Doom is just one of those franchises that is all about badassery. You’re a man of few?? words, but lots of rage. Killing all sorts of demons with your arsenal or ev??en your bare hands has never felt so good.

So, if you want to kill a bunch of stuff without your character yapping after every little injury, the Doom reboot games are a must-cop, especially with The Dark Ages coming soon.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

Boltgun is a game that encapsulates the magic of the 90s with its aesthetic, but also a fu?n blend between modern and retro boomer shooters. You’re here for the fun shooting and satisfying ways of taking down whatever the game throws ??at you.

When your thirst for Daemon Blood has been quenched, this might be what you need to go back to serving Democracy on all needed fronts in Helldivers 2.

Left 4 Dead 2

Helldivers 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 have lots of similarities when it comes to t??he core aspects of how they run. They both have procedurally generated levels like enemy spawns and a game? director, or a ‘masterthat adds variations per mission like drops and difficulty modifiers.

You can play these two games a lot and get a bit of variety every time you fire up a new session. While the core gameplay loop is the same, it’s the small variations that make you keep coming back. Plus, ??the whole zombies aspect and training en??emies is so rewarding.

Serious Sam Collection artwork
Image via Croteam

Serious Sam Collection (PS4, Xbox One, Switch) or Fusion (PC)

The first three mainline Serious Sam games are the best in the series and are more than enough to give you a few dozen hours of intense gunplay, gore, and hilarity. Fighting all sorts of weird, wacky, and fever-dream-esque enemies will definitely scratch that Helldivers 2 itch.

While weapons in this game actually pack a punch and can easily destroy dozens of enemies in seconds, that transition between this power fantasy and back to Helldivers 2 is going to be rough.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite review 2
Image via Cold Iron Studios

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is like a more serious version of Helldivers 2. It’s very faithful to the Aliens franchise, from the world-building, the weaponry, and the enemies you fight. If you like t??o blast these Xenos and the Synths into smithereens, you need to get this game.

Also, instead of large, open-area instances, you’re in more linear missions fighting waves of enemies. Ge?ar up with different classes, perks, and weapons, and set off to missions with either two bots or two other players.

Broforce Forever Header
Image via Devolver Digital

Broforce

Broforce is a lot different from all the other games on this list. It’s not a shoo??ter game, but rathe??r, a 2D shoot-em-up game featuring hypermasculine versions of movie characters from the 80s and 90s.

The narrative is all about the same as Helldivers with its over-the-top political sa?tire. You serve under an ultra-nationalist USA and basically liberate a bunch of countries overseas assuming control of many different iconic movie characters. Go into a mission, die from random stuff, and make it out with explosions and hilarity.

Starship Troopers Extermination
Image via Offworld Industries

Starship Troopers: Extermination

This list wouldn’t be right without the franchise that heavily inspired Helldivers 2. From the bugs and extreme patriotism, Starship Troopers: Extermination is going to (hopefully) make sure our devo??tion to quelling alien filth stays strong, especially with Rico aiding you?? in your war efforts.

Just a tad bit different from Helldivers 2, Starship Troopers has this base-building aspect to the game, adding som?e slight variation to just heading face-first into an endless horde of sci-fi bugs.

If you want to keep that momentum going after running for your life, killing sci-fi hordes of enemies, and devoting yourself to ironic, extremist causes, none of these g??ames can go wrong.

I received my pre-release key for Earth Defense Force 6 on Monday of this week. Do you know how many missions these games typically have? We're talking around 40 hours, at least, and I'm lucky to be awa??ke for that many hours in?? a week.

The marketing materials even say that this is the biggest one yet in terms of mission count. I’d say that I believe it, ??but it’s really hard to tell. The narrative pacing is so choppy in these games that it’s hard to say what part of the arc (if there is one) you’re even at. Big bad baddies get introduced and th?en taken away until later. Super weapons are developed and then disappear. It’s hard to get a handle.

That might sound like a complaint, but there’s a lot about Earth Defense Force that you just take as-is. They’re far from the most sophisticated games, and any attempt to push them more in that direction would threaten their charm and appeal. So you either accept all the rough bits and just enjoy blasting ants into orbit, or you don’t. Earth Defense Force 6 doesn’t change that one bit.

Earth Defense Force 6 (PS4, PS5, PC [Reviewed])
Developer: Sandlot Games
Publisher: D3Publisher
Released: July 25, 2024
MSRP: $59.99

EDF 5 restarted the seriescontinuity for, like, the fifth time if we include the games that weren’t developed by Sandlot. EDF 6 continues from there. It picks up a few years after the invasion depicted in the previous game, and things absolutely suck. The world is in ruins and humanity is completely failing in any effort to try and re-establis?h society.

The setup is different, placing you in crumbling cities fighting off the remnants of the aliens who were left behind, but it will be excruciatingly familiar if you played any of the previous games. You start off with a tiny arsenal, fighting small groups of easy enemies, and things grow from there. If you’ve been playing since 2007’s Earth Defense Force 2017 like I have, the opening missions where you’re just taking ou?t a few ants w??ith a peashooter will have gotten really boring by now.

Also, definitely skip the tutorial. It has a prologue where you and a scientist dressed like a banker get moved to a new military base. The commanding officer gives you this massively long and boring speech. Then you’re given a quick run??down of some extremely obvious controls. The only information that might be slightly necessary is that you play as the same protagonist as the previous game, and the man dressed as an accountant used to mak?e weapons.

//youtu.be/HwtaYENREEY?feature=shared

Once again, you have four classes. There’s the straightforward Ranger, the shapely Wing Diver, the supportive Air Raider, and the mechanized Fencer. Each one has a completely different playstyle, which is especially useful in multiplayer. However, the EDF game?s have never really had much strategy to them, so? while each feel and play quite different, the difference isn't hugely impactful.

You’re once again fighting ants, which eventually give way into weirder enemies. There are plenty of?? new foes to face off with, but it’s the same flow.

The narrative is strangely compelling. Story is not something you typically play EDF games for, considering a lot of it is told through scratchy, one-sided radio conversations with fantastically over-acted voiceovers. It’s just as clumsy in Earth Defense Force 6, and while it’s n??ot exactly well told, it twists in ways that I didn’t expect. I’m almost on edge wondering what is going to happen next.

Earth Defense Force 6 ruined city.
Screenshot by Destructoid

On the other hand, I can’t stress enough how much EDF 6 is like EDF 5. The graphical upgrades are ??s??o minor that you might not even notice them. It still looks like a PS3 game with a 4K texture pack.

In fact, if I had to name a single new feature that was added, I could only tell you that there’s a new sub-weapon slot. Of course, new weapons and monsters have been added, but that’s just what you’d expect from a continuation. If EDF 6? wasn’t such a massive game, I’d say it should? have just been an expansion pack.

I’ll get deeper into things when I’m ready to give you a full review, but that’s the warning I want to give if you’re eager to click the purchase button on Earth Defense Force 6. If you didn’t finish EDF 5, you aren’t missing much if you just go back and play that instead. If you did finish EDF 5, and want more, then this is a safe purchase. Earth Defense Force 6 is assuredly more Earth Defense Force.

Still on course for a 2021 release in Japan

D3 Publisher has finally revealed its platform plans for the upcoming alien-bustin' sequel Earth Defense Force 6. As reported by Weekly Famitsu, The EDF will be making their grand return on current PlayStation platforms. It is?? expected to launch in Japan before 2021 winds up, with a western localization expected to follow at a later date.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysgs-dUGEmk

Of no surprise to anybody, Earth Defense Force 6 will see our favorite platoon of souped-up mech mercs battling an interplanetary invasion from a horde of creepy-crawlies, currently laying waste to the world's capital cities. For a change, right? Previously released footage sees The EDF's finest loaded for bear with hi-tech melee and ranged weaponry exterminating swarms of giant ants, spiders, wasps, and even nightmarish robotic walkers. Do these aliens not understand that The EDF are undefeatable, having protected the planet from attack on no less than five occasions!?

It's a perfectly fair comment to suggest that the Earth Defense Force franchise has settled into steady repetition, with incredibly samey gameplay and only the most minor ??of technological upgrades between each new entry. But the franchise still retains hefty doses of good, chaotic, cathartic fun. The power of next-gen platforms such as PS5 will hopefully only add the crazy, satirical action, making the bug invasion all the more skin-crawly and the EDF's arsenal of explosive weaponry all t??he more boomeriffic, (as in "BOOM!" not as in "Boomer").

That one level with all of the red ants on the beach is a stone-cold classic

I have a lot of love for the wider bug-squashing Earth Defense Force series, now and into the foreseeable future. But as some of you will ardently agree, there's a precise degree of wonkiness and charm to Earth Defense Force 2017 that really hits the spot, even as bigger and better sequels or in rare cases, surprisingly neat spin-offs roll onto the scene.

So, good news: as reported by Famitsu, Earth Defense Force 2017 is get?ting a Nintendo Switch version on October 14, 2021, in Japan. If I need to use an altern?ate Switch account to play, I will. Hopefully, though, a Western release from D3 won't trail too far.

The first screenshots from Famitsu look to be pretty close to my memory of EDF 2017, whic??h is to say it's endearingly ugl??y. The shambling floppy-armed robots still look cool.

How's this sucker going to run on a Nintendo Switch? Not that well, I'd assume. I'd shoot for "adequately." Content-wise, the Switch edition will retain the Pale Wing archetype from the PlayStation Vita's Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable.

Japan already got a Switch port of this game's predecessor, Earth Defense Force 2, on July 15. No word on that coming West y???et, either. Please send them over.

For old times' sake, here's th???e level that has always stuck with me.

Blocky Bug Bustin'

Get set for the more adorable little invasion you ever did see, as D3 Publisher, in association with Yuke's, has finally announced a western localization for the newest, pint-sized entry in the EDF franchise: Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, which will launch on PS4,?? PC, and Nint??endo Switch on May 27.

Released in Japan back in December 2020, EDF: World Brothers features the typical, chaotic, insect-invasion action that is a trademark of the franchise, only this time stylized in super-cute voxel graphics. Players build a team of comical customizable characters, before heading into battle against spiders, ants, was?ps, frogs, and other cubic c?ritters laying waste to the major cities of "Voxel Earth"... which itself is also just a big ol' cube.

While the EDF franchise isn't likely to win any medals for reinvention anytime soon, World Brothers is a very fun new take on the series "fire-and-forget" action. The spin-off title supports two-player split-screen and four-player online, and features over 100 unlockable soldier types, from Gothic Lolita maids to clowns, Godzilla cosplayers, and everything in-between. And speaking of the King of the Monsters, watch out for some truly towering boss characters, ready an??d raring to smash you back into itty-bitty pieces.

One of the quirkiest looking releases on the horizon has to be Sandlot's cute voxel shooter Earth Defense Force: World Brothers. This spin-off title to the popular EDF franchis?e will take the series' typical monster-mashing action and stylize it? with adorable voxel visuals.

As EDF: World Brothers' Japanese release approaches D3 Publisher has launched a new weekly video series, that will offer overviews of a variety of elements found within World Brothers' colorful, insect-infested universe.

The first episode, which you can check out below, focuses on the arsenal of weapons, items, and gear available to your pint-sized party of agents, as they do battle with ants, wasps, and the most adorable giant spiders you ever did see. I think it looks an absolute blast, but perhaps a little too slow-paced.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers launches in Japan on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on December 24. Fret not, a western local??ization has already been confirmed, expected to arrive in early 2021.

Don't you mean Blocko shirt?

D3 Publisher has released a lengthy Japanese trailer showcasing new footage of EDF: World Brothers, an upcoming spin-off entry in the bug-busting Earth Defense Force franchise.

Previously revealed back in June, Earth Defense Force: World Brothers will capture all of the frenetic, pulse-pounding, monster-squishing action of the EDF series, but stylised in a super-cute voxel world. As is the franchise wont, World Brothers will see players tacking an army of ants, wasps, spiders and other skyscraper-sized critters as they lay waste to some of Earth's most beloved locations and also Parliame??nt.

The new seven-minute showcase not only gives us a great look at the game in action, but also spotlights the array of wacky costumes and skins with which ??to adorn your favourite EDF operative - including ninja getup, a cat-girl maid, not Harley Quinn, not Boba Fett, and not Gundam. I think it's shaping up to be an absolute blast, and will slide perfectly into those cathartic "end of the work day" gaming hours.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers will launch in Japan on PS4 and Nintendo Switch December 24. A western localisation ha?s been confirmed for 2021.

The 'other' E.D.F.

It's shmup news a-plenty this week, as the latest Arcade Archives release from the retro fans over at Hamster is none other than Jaleco's early '90s endeavour Earth Defense Force, which is now available? to downl?oad on Nintendo Switch.

Released in arcades in 1991, before later being re-imagined for the SNES, Earth Defense Force is a horizontally scrolling intergalactic shmup, set in that narrative staple of 20??XX. Players pilot a state-of-the-art ship through a number of stages, taking on the invading Azyma Empire and its de??vastating master vessel, the Orbital Satellite Buster.

Check out the action in the video below, courtesy of YouTuber Martinoz.

In a new twist on many shmups of the day, Earth Defense Force not only allows the player to take several hits befor??e expiring, thanks to a recoverable shield meter, but the game also features a pseudo-"leveling" system, in which the ship's weapons become more powerful in proportion to the amount of enemies defeated.

Earth Defense Force i??s available to download now on Nintendo Switch, priced at $8.

That's the launch window for Switch and PS4 in the West

In 2021, we'll finally have a chance to squash bugs in Earth Defense Force on Nintendo Switch.

After a recent reveal in Japan, D3 has slapped an "early 2021" estimate on the Western release of Earth Defense Force: World Brothers. It's not the typical EDF aesthetic – the overgrown insects, small? soldiers, ?and destructible cities are all present in a cutesy voxel style – but chaos still reigns supreme. I'm stoked.

We've had plenty of traditional Earth Defense Force titles, so I'm down for a quirky side-step.

Dinky Destruction

D3 Publisher has released the first trailer for Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, the voxel-styled EDF spin-off revealed earlier this week. The video begins wit??h a brief overview of the series' storied history, before diving right into the pint-sized action.

In the two-minute trailer, we see a variety of different soldiers from the world's greatest fighting force laying waste to armies of ants, wasps, spiders, and other creepy crawlies across Minecraft-style replications of famous global locations. Battles take place on the ground and up in the air??, with an array of explosive weaponry and even some ninja-based melee combat. We ?are also treated to a selection of fun skins, such as a rootin' tootin' gunslinger and a kawaii maid.

I was actually a little surprised by the lack of enthusiasm that greeted the initial announcement, as I think this new design is a welcome change of pace from the typical EDF aesthetic. This trailer also appears to show that World Brothers' gameplay will be ve??ry similar in playstyle to the main series, and as such I think it looks like it could be a lot of fun. Hopefully, we'll receive news of a western localisation at some point down the line.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers is currently in development for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. It will launch in Japan later in 2020. For the more traditional EDF fans among you, Earth Defense Force 6 is also in development for a 2021 release.

But what is left to save?

It's been a big day for news for EDF fans. Not only did D3 publisher reveal the cool-looking voxel title Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, but PlayStation Blog Japan then followed up with th??e announcement that a sixth mainline sequel is already in the works for a 2021 release.

Earth Defense Force 6 - of no surprise to anybody - will see the brave men and women of The EDF take up arms once again to combat the threat of giant bugs who are rampaging through our world's capitals. In an amusingly dark storyline, it seems that the previous invasion has reduced the global populace to just 10%, and society itself stands on the brink of collapse. Furthermore, some of the aliens that came to Earth have established colonies on the planet, lea??ding to a perpetual ??civil war between humans and the new colonists.

Just to really shake things up, it appears that the bugs and monsters battled previously created nests deep in the Earth's surface, nests that are preparing to l??et loose a new wave of infestation across the planet. With hugely depleted resources, 90% of the populace wiped out entirely, and a new invasion on the way, can the EDF face up to its biggest threat yet and save what remains of M?other Earth?

D3 is yet to release a trailer for Earth Defense Force 6, but you can check out a brand new website right here. PlayStation is obviously a given, but a full list of platforms is yet to be revealed. Earth Defense Force 6 will launch in Japan at some point in 2021.

Block Busters

[Update: A selection of new screens can be viewed in the gallery below, courtesy of Gematsu.]

D3 Publisher has announced a new spin-off title in its bug-squashing Earth Defense Force series... and this one is particularly peculiar. Earth Defense Force: World Brothers will feature all the typical EDF giant-insect action we've come to know and love, but stylised in a cutesy?, voxel-graphics aesthetic.

Developed by Yukes, World Brothers will allow the player to form a team of four EDF fighters from a roster of around 100 characters, before going into battle against hordes of giant spiders, wasps, ants, and other creepy crawlies, all hell bent on taking over the planet. All of the characters, skills, monsters, and weapons have been collated from previous EDF titles, making World Brothers a celebration of the entire series. There is unfortunately no trailer as of yet, but the official website is live right here, and there is a selection of great screenshots avai??lable for your perusal at Famitsu.co?m.

I'm really digging this concept. EDF is a lot of fun at the best of times, but this unique visual style is so well-suited to the franchise' goofy action. Currently in development for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, we'll be sure to bring you more news on Earth Defense Force: World Brothers as and when it hatches.

It ain't quite LEGO: Earth Defense Force, but I'll take it.

A faster-than-expected turnaround

I would never crush a spider in real life, but in Earth Defense Force? That's a whol??e 'nother story. The only good bug is a ??dead bug, and that sentiment also goes for any robots, spaceships, and kaiju that might stand in our way. This series could continue doing its thing into eternity and I wouldn't complain.

Following a PlayStation 4 release back in April, the latest EDF game a slightly more linear take on bug blastin' called Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is launching soon on Steam from developer Yuke's. The PC version comes o?ut on Tuesday, October 15. I didn't think we'd see a port that quickly.

Like its predecessor, Iron Rain commands a full $60 price tag, but duri??ng the first week after launch, D3 Publisher will have a 20 percent discount in place. That's still not budget-game territory, though.

"Despite the marketing of a more 'serious' tone this is still very much EDF a bug-shooting Dynasty Warriors-esque hack-and-slash at heart," Chris noted in his PS4 review. I wasn't expecting much from a Yuke's-developed Earth Defense Force spin-off when the project was first announced, so to hear that it's not just pretty to look at (it runs in Unreal Engine 4!), b??ut it's fun enough, too? That was heartening.

That said, I'm behind on EDF. I still need to play Earth Defense Force 5. Maybe one day I'll get stranded on a desert island that somehow has electricity, a PC, and Wi-Fi. Then I'll get around to Iron Rain.

The EDF Deploys! On Steam!

In a surprising bit of news, D3 Publisher has announced that intergalactic bug-stomping sequel Earth Defense Force 5 will be deploying on PC as soon as this week. Following on from its release on PS4 in December 2018, the goofy action title will launch on Steam Thursday, July 11.

One of the most recent entries in the goofy, madcap and endearingly bad sci-fi series, EDF 5 brings about yet another mass army of ants, spiders frogs and other critters to Earth?, where you, as a new recruit in the EDF, must battle alongside your comrades-in-arms in over 100 missions of glitchy mayhem.

With a choice of four distinct classes, multiple weapons and vehicles allowing for assault via land or air, and online multiplayer action, only you can prevent the extinction of the human race at the pincers of the insectoid army.

Earth Defense Force 5 is a?vailable now o??n PS4 and hits PC via Steam July 11.

EDF saves the day!

Microsoft has announced the May 2019 line-up for its "Games With Gold" selection and it's all over the place. I understand not every month can be a b??anger, but this is an exceptionally odd collection of games. Each game is from a different genre and their release dates span an entire decade. I can't even detect a common theme between these titles, other than being lesser known games.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon is the clear winner here, but Comic Jumper is supposedly pretty good. I have no idea what Marooners is, but The Golf Club 2019 is not worth your time. While the game is in a better place than when I reviewed it last year, it still ha?sn't fixed problems inherent to its design. Hitting the ball with any kind of accuracy?? is a crapshoot and the lack of progression really limits the appeal of its "career" mode.

Still, I guess t?here is some fun to be had here. It's just a big step down from previous months.

The EDF Deploys!

D3 Publisher has dropped its latest Japanese trailer for Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain. The 10-minute clip lets us catch a glimpse at some of the bug-stompin??g that awaits in this latest entry to the ton??gue-in-cheek action series.

Alongside the brave men and women of the EDF screaming and pe?rforming calisthenics (don't ask me, pal) we see "are b??rave boys" go into battle against the hordes of giant insects and monsters that are the series trademark. We can see various classes - such as Rangers and Wing Divers - in action, unleashing hi-tech weaponry against the insect menace. One soldier even rides into battle undercover atop their own giant ant!

Let's face it, it all just looks like more of the same, as is the Earth Defense Force's wont. But that's what keeps the fans happy, and no doubt the franchise' loyal troops will be beaming when Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain launches worldwide, April 11, on PS4.

Just another bug hunt

Arachnophobe warning!

Other than video games, my main passion is women dressed in suits, ??with drawn on pencil-thin moustaches movies. Whilst I haven't kept a complete tally of how many films I've watched, I know it's thousands upon thousands, with a personal best a couple of years back of about 200 in one year. I've seen a lot of the greats and most of the classics. But more importantly, I've seen plenty of the worst movies ever made.

I don't mean some crappy horror sequel from 2006. I mean truly atrocious films of no redeeming quality. Shit like The Starfighters, Zombie-a-Go-Go and Americathon. I've also seen awful films that, somehow, remain wildly entertaining; R.O.T.O.R, Voyage of the Rock Aliens, Animal Protector and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

So many times, the question is asked "What is gaming's Citizen Kane?" Aside from this being one of the very worst questions ever to leave anyone's lips, we're also yet to find a true and fitting answer. But forget the artsy classics. What I want to know is when does anybody ever ask "What is gaming's Death Wish 3?"

Well, if they ever do, you look 'em dead in the eye and you tell them it's Earth Defense Force 5, baby.

Earth Defense Force 5 review
Earth Defense Force 5
(PS4)

Developer: Sandlot Games
Publisher: D3 Publisher
Released: December 11, 2018 (NA & Europe) December 7, 2017 (Japan)
MSRP: $59.99 / £39.99

Originally launching on the PlayStation 2 as Monster Attack back in 2003, Earth Defense Force has since gone on to garner a dedicated fanbase with its B-movie tales of humble Earth soldiers versus armies of giant insects, amphibians and other monstrous terrors. It's now 2018... and things are kind of the same. Like a?? lot of video game franchises, only minor alteration??????????????????????????s have been made to the format, with the core gameplay remaining essentially comparable.

In Earth Defense Force 5, this newest re?lease in the monster-mashing series, players pick from a class and sally forth to combat the newest bug threat. There's the standard, ground-based Rangers, the slower but heavier-hitting Fencers and, hilariously, a sexy, all-women airforce known as the Wing Divers, equipped with jetpacks, plasma cannons and a short-range laser gun with a migraine-inducing firing effect.

Once you pick your character and start the training mission, Earth Defense Force 5 lets rip with its mission-based story mode. It's about 30 seconds into mission one that something becomes readily apparent. Technically, aesthetically and narratively, EDF 5 is an amusing mess.

In keeping with the spirit of the series and the overall style of the game, (but simultaneously as a cop-out for its own genuine flaws), EDF 5 is the proudest piece of trash I've played in a long time. The controls are clunky, the A.I is barely existent, the gameplay is decades old, the graphics are last-gen and, without hyperbole, the constant stream of spoken dialogue is on a par with the original release of Resident Evil.

The player and their put-upon squad of soldiers are flung into battle with en masse armies of giant ants, spiders, mecha-wasps, flying toads, drones and other some weirdies I won't spoil here. Gameplay is simply mindless, you just open fire and don't stop, as th?e enemy falls through walls and floors in its de?sperate attempts to reach you.

Every one of the 100+ single-player missions follows a similar M.O: run to the squad of "monsters" (the characters keep saying "monsters" every few seconds, in what is clearly an intentional joke and a legitimately funny one), and wipe them off the ?planet. Sometimes these hordes will spawn from generators, which must also be destroyed. Keep you and your crew alive, destroy the weird, glitching ma?ss of beasties, and once you've caused enough wanton destruction, you're good, soldier.

Classes, weapons a?nd gear level up as you progress, with the in-game arsenal expanding to feature various types of weaponry and armour. Surely including sniper rifles in a game like this is some kind of punchline though, right? Vehicles also come into play as the missions progress, so if you ever wanted to be chased by a horde of jumping spiders, whilst on a motorbike, w?ith a rocket launcher, brother, have I got the game for you.

Earth Defense Force 5 review

At every turn, something about the game is just bad. Power-up crates simply vanish on pick-up. Monsters block the camera, get stuck between buildings, or even wander straight past yo?u and off into some far-flung corner of the map. Your A.I. brothers-in-arms have zero initiative, walking backwards into battle, or facing the wrong way whilst talking to you. For all intents and purposes, D3 Publisher has put out a game that, whilst still above the standard?? of a no-budget indie-title, is still a snug fit for the latter's trappings.

But, despite all this, EDF 5 carries with it a baffling magnetism and charm, a sort of shrugging self-awareness about its own crapness. It's like Sandlot know they don't have the budget to make Marvel's Spider-Man, so instead just made their game the cheesiest, most comically broken and ??balls-to-the-wall chaotic shooter on the market.

We've established EDF 5 is Not Great. We've also established that the game is willing to meet the player halfway with "Hey, we both know this is rubbish, but let's have some fun with it, yeah?" But wha?t happens to that joke when you're paying top dollar; money that could be spent on better games? Therein lies the real question of recommendation.

When the game is goofily poor, as well as being legitimately repetitive, dated and janky (stuttering frame-rate and awful cameras are no joke), is it still worth your cash? I think it's fair to claim that EDF 5 will please most of its dedicated fanbase, who have long come to terms with the franchise' mindless mayhem and less-than-stellar technical prowess. But for everyone else, this campy, cathartic nightmare is only worth grabbing on a rental, or in a sale. Unless you're a hardened EDF'er, do not pay $60 for this game.

Earth Defense Force 5 review

Earth Defense Force 5 is certainly not boring, and is entertaining in short bursts. I think there is an insane gaming experience here that has to be played to be believed. But, looking at things a little more sensibly, if you have the cash to purchase a video game this month, there's some genuinely amazing titles on the market. I'm first in line to cheer for the concept of "So Bad it's Good" - definitely in effect here in  EDF 5 - but the price has to be right, lest the ultim?ate jo??ke be on you.

It has been a long time since I've played a game so self-aware of its own flaws, yet so proud to embrace, even celebrate them. This alone makes Earth Defense Force 5 worthy of a few hours of your time. But at the end of the day, they are flaws, and there are many of them. So while there is fun to be found in this latest bout of intergalactic mayhem, just make sure you pay a fitting price for the ticket to ride.

You're gonna have to kill all those damn pests again because they just won't stay away. They're like bed bugs or silverfish,?? except they're perfectly capable of destroying all of earth. How's that for stakes raising?

The extermination starts soon. During a Tokyo Game Show event today, D3 Publisher announced that Earth Defense Force 5 will launch in North America on PlayStation 4 on December 11, 2018. Maybe this is the time you'll really kill them all dead for good. I mean, it definitely won't be, but maaaaaybeeeee...

Fresh out of TGS

It's about the one-year anniversary of the first time we learned about Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain. In those 12 months since its Tokyo Game Show 2017 reveal, D3 Publisher hasn't said much this EDF spin-off thing.

Here's what we know about Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain: It's being developed by Yukes rather than Sandlot. There's a more serious and realistic tone to this game (as realistic as giant alien ants can be anyway). And, it'll release in the West sometime next year, missing its original projection of 2018.

You know what else? It looks pretty damn good for an Earth Defense Force game! The second trailer just released ahead of TGS and it properly conveys how ludicrous this series is, even with this game's more straight-fa??ced approach. Also, Godzilla's friendly face is back. How reassuring.

If that's not enough for you, D3 Publisher also has th?is mega gallery of 60 new(ish) screenshots. Peruse at your leisure. Whatever gets you amped up for the impend??ing insecticide.

It's making an appearance at TGS

There's a pair of new EDF games on the horizon, and while we've seen plenty of Earth Defense Force 5, the more mysterious of the two, Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, has remained quiet.

Ahead of Tokyo Game Show, D3 has confirmed a 2019 launch for Iron Rain in the West. Both titles will be playable at this month's show, ?so we can expect to see more soon.

Here's a trailer from last year. The project is in development at Yuke's, not Sandlot, and while you're still blasting away at giant insects, Iron Rain is ??tonally differen?t -- and also easier on the eyes.

I'm not completely sold on the maybe-too-serious voice-overs, but the new creature designs and production values are on-point. Those d??epth of field and lighting effects are real nice. And good on them for sneaking in a bit of silliness with that whispered "Unforeseen enemies have arrived" line.

I'm long overdue a replay

I'm happy to see 2008's Prince of Persia make it to Xbox One via backward compatibility.

At the time, it was a departure for the series and that understandably led to divisiveness among Prince of Persia fans, but gosh dang if it isn't a pleasant sight even a decade later. ?My memory of the game is generally positive but mostly fuzzy, so having it accessible on Xbox One will be lovely.

Microsoft also added the surprisingly dark side-scrolling shoot-'em-up Sine Mora (which has since been re-released) and Earth Defense Force 2025, a game you're either Very I?nto or will straight up ignore.

New EDF5 footage has me ready to deploy

So long as Sandlot keeps making Earth Defense Force games, I'll keep showing up to play them.

On the UFO-filled horizon we've got Earth Defense Force 5, which is set to bring endless giant insects, towering kaiju, and new "human-looking aliens" to PlayStatio?n 4 later this year in the West.

This ridiculous on-brand ??trailer is just what I needed to close?? out my week.

I cannot and will not get over the giant frog men. They're too good. The EDF series rehashes a lot of con??tent, but new elements like that hel??p offset repetition and I still inherently enjoy the grind.

Looks like the rain is holding off for now

Speaking in the latest issue of Famitsu, D3 Publisher have unfortunately announced that their upcoming bug hunt Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, will not be hitting ??its scheduled 2018 release date.

Joining a plethora of titles that have been pushed back to 2019, the new EDF adventure needs more time to fine-tune its trademark blend of fast action, monster mayhem and weird, comedic overtones. Iron Rain is not being developed by series stalwart ?Sandlot this time around, instead being built by Yukes, in an effort to give the series a fresh new look and feel?.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain was announced for the PS4 at last year's Tokyo Game Show, but it looks like there's still a ways to go before we can get back to saving the world from giant ants an?d other such creepy terrors.

Just another bug hunt

D3 Publisher have announced that Earth Defense Force 5 will be touching-down in North America this Summer, bringin?g all the gooey, high-octane action that has become the series trademark.

Earth Defense Force 5, which launched in Japan December 2017, continues the tradition of pitting heavily-armed squadrons against wave after ??wave of alien invaders, mainly consisting of giant insects and reptilian kaiju creatures. Players can combat the hordes on foot or in a variety of land and air-based vehicles.

No specific date was given for its North American debut, nor was Europe mentioned in D3 Publisher's announcement. But we will, of course, keep you up-to-date as more information become??s available. In the meantime, you can check out an amusing, bizarre preview for the Japanese release below.

The only good bug is a dead bug

For all its jank and clunkiness, Earth Defense Force 2017 is a game worth cherishing. Just hearing its name pop up makes me want to dig out my copy and play that one beach level with a million red ants. I love how their carcasses soar. I love the way t??he robots flop about. This game ??is such mindless joy.

As of today, it's possible to play EDF 2017 on Xbox One through backward compatibility. And for all you Sonic Adventure 2 ??fans out there, 2012's Xbox Live Arcade version is also now supported.

'You can all sleep well tonight!'

It wouldn't be Tokyo Game Show for me without a new EDF trailer. It just wouldn't! We've got four and a half minutes of footage from Sandlot's latest entry, Earth Defense Force 5, and it's a hoot.

The battle scene at 2:35 with the hulking humanoid invaders really sealed the deal for me, to say nothing of the Gigantic Unloader Barga mech repeatedly cloc?king a kaiju in the face at 3:40.

Will I grow tired of blasting the (mostly) same old insects? Not anytime soon! Which is good, because on top of EDF5, there's also Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain in the pipeline for next year.

Ant music

This morning's Tokyo Game Show brings news that giant bugs and terrifying mechs are set to plague the planet once more, as D3's long-running kaiju-battle series Earth Defense Force is getting a new sequel for PS4.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will see the elite monster-stompers of the EDF ch??arge headlong into battle to clear the planet of huge insects, aliens, robots and other threats, armed with a mass array of explosive weaponry, and even some new tech, such as as slick tank and some airborne power-armour.

A tr?ailer was also released alongside the news, narrated by an uncannily familiar voice, can yo??u place it?

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain will launch on PS4 in 2018.

The EDF deploys!

D3 Publisher has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming PS4 game Earth Defense Force 5, which has turned out to be a real treat.

I always love trailers li?ke this to have a little fun while showing off the game. It's got everything you could need! Comedy, action, drama, giant alien bugs, mechs, and explosions! In addition, D3 Publisher h??as shared some more details about the game in the description of the video.

"Humanity, rise up and oppose your fate!

In 2013, 7 years after Earth Defense Force 3, the long-awaited sequel Earth Defense Force 4 arrived on the scene bringing the ultimate in despair and exhilaration. In 2015, new missions were added and the game took the battle to the PS4 with more content and intensity than ever before as Earth Defense Force 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair.

Now, in 2017, prepare yourself for a whole new fight in Earth Defense Force 5, an all-new? tale of invasion by unknown alien forces and?? humanity's confrontation against them.

The 5th installment in the series brings with it the shocking arrival of a humanoid enemy! Is humanity destined for destruction in the face of this unprecedented threat???

Humanity, rise up and overcome your despair! Oppo??se your fate!"

Truth be told, I've never played an Earth Defense Force game before. It seems like it has everythi?ng I would enjoy in a game, but every time one comes out, I either completely forget or another title I was waiting for comes out and I buy that instead. Maybe that changes with this one.

Currently the game only has a summer 2017 release window for Japan. However, given the English subs in the trailer, we should receive an international rel?ease window as well soon.

A tale of bugs and men, eternally retold

I can only imagine what it's like to watch a trailer for Earth Defense Force 5 without knowing what the series is about and why, for the right type of person, it's a damn good time despite looking like an outdated mess. "Why do they chant 'EDF! EDF! EDF!' in the comments? Who are these people?"

This video serves as a decent intro to the game by sum??marizing the different cla?sses, previewing the new giant frog men and humanoid alien boys, and retaining the series' outlandish humor.

Notably, while Earth Defense Force 5 is?? set for a ??PlayStation 4 release this year in Japan, today's video from D3 Publisher has English subs. It's only a matter of time before we get a release window, too.
