Up to 40% of a game's total sales occur in the first month, according to the SSRN Electronic Journal. ??Consequently, the best strategy for studios is to ensure their titles launch with a bang. Some strategic marketing is necessa??ry to achieve this. Piling up good reviews from critics and gamers is also vital, meaning it's essential for games to launch in a polished state.

Over the years, a few titles have missed the mark terribly, resulting in catastro?phic launches. The following list contains some of the worst offenders?? in gaming history.

2024 addendum

To borrow a common internet adage, it's like Concord read this list and said, "Hold my beer." As such, we felt it would be a good time to add to this list. It felt as though it would remain ?incomplete without what is currently the most talked about crash.

But rather than slotting in Concord and calling it a day??, I'm going to also add a couple of my favorite launch failures. Smangeliso already did a bang-up job on compiling some of the worst, so those are left untouched.

Jurassic Park Trespasser Jank

13. Trespasser - Jurassic Park

The move to 3D graphics was a painful one. Over-ambition was common, and nowhere was this more obvious than with Trespasser, a game based on the Jurassic Park franchise. The lead-up to the launch promised a game that used a real-time physics engi?ne and artificial intelligence that would make dinosaurs flock together and act based on their specific needs.

Trespasser was technically impressive when it launched. However, the game was rushed so urgently that every promised feature was only technically implemented. Dinosaur AI,? for example, wasn't ready for prime time, so the dinosaur's anger was cranked up to maximum, and that was it. The real-time physics and inverse kinematic animations resulted in the thunder lizards staggering around drunkenly. It's hilarious, it's easily o??ne of my favorite terrible games.

SimCity 2013 Offline

12. SimCity (2013)

The first SimCity was released in 1989 and became one of the most influential games in the history of the industry. It practically created the city-builder genre and laid the groundwork for all kinds of management games. Makes sense that EA would be the ones to screw that up. The publisher decided that the once single-player city builder should have a multiplayer element, and that was enough to warrant an always-online requirement for SimCity (2013). Previous botched attempts at always-online had soured the already mixed ??feelings on the requirement, and it proved to be warranted when many players had difficulty downloading, connecting, and staying connected to play the game.

It didn't stop at the online issues, however. Many changes to the SimCity formula were not well received, such as an almost microscopic map size to build on and mindless traffic that players would put through veritable mazes of streets to demonstrate their insistence on taking ?the most direct path, rather than an easily acceptable and better alternative. Three years later, EA would remove the always-online requirement, but at that point, it was far too late.

11. WWE 2K20

The WWE franchise has had a long presence in the gaming scene, and titles like Smackdown! vs Raw 2006 and SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain are ?memorable games that successfully replicate the testosterone-flooded action of sports entertainment.

When WWE 2K20 launched in October 2019, day-one buyers ended up with a game sporting atrocious graphics that looked like they belonged on a PS3. The gameplay wasn't any better, and the numerous glitches made WWE 2K20 a pain to play. The game's terrible reception was one of the reasons WWE 2K21 was canceled. It was for the best, as when the franchise returned with WWE 2K22, it achieved double its pred??ecessor's launch sales?.

10. New World

Amazon's New World hit stores in September 2021, and the launch was nothing but chaos. Servers were flooded, resulting in players waiting for hours before they could start playing. When people were eventually able to play, they d??iscovered that while the core game was good, it was also plagued with game-breaking glitches. Since release, plenty of updates have been pushed out, and the game is in a better state, but ??it failed to be the enduring classic that Amazon was likely aiming for.

9. Anthem

When Anthem was announced, the flashy marketing successfully caught the attention of the gaming world. Unfortunately, when Anthem launched in 2019, it was immediately critically panned. Critics and gamers alike complained about many elements, including boring missions, technical g??litches, poor performance, and excessive grinding. The game failed to meet EA's exp??ectations, and future developments for it were cut in 2021.

8. The Last of Us Part 1 (PC)

Though the PS5 version launched without any major issues, the PC port of The Last of Us Part 1 has been nothing short of a disaster. Players were greeted with techn??ical issues and absurdly long loading times, making the game unplayable for some. Since launch, many have pointed the finger at Iron Galaxy, the studio Naughty Dog entrusted with the port. It won't be the last time the studio appears on the list, so there may be some truth to ??the accusations.

7. Fallout 76

In 2018, Bethesda took Fallout online with Fallout 76. The game promised to allow players to explore dystopian settings with friends, which is an idea that has great potential. When Fallout 76 launched in November 2018, it was far from what gamers expected, resulting in the PC version scoring a measly 52 on Metacritic. Due to the bad press, many gamers stayed away, and as a result, Fallout 76 had lower launch sales numbers than Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas.

6. Batman: Arkham Knight (PC)

Arkham Knight's PS4 and Xbox One versions were developed by Rocksteady Studios, and the PC port was handed off to Iron Galaxy. This proved to be a mistake. When Arkham Knights launched on PC, it crashed constantly and featured techni??cal issues tha??t rendered it unplayable for many.

The situation got so bad that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment suspended sales of the Wi?ndows version of the game in June 2015 while developers worked on patches to fix the game. Though the game has improved plenty,? the historically disastrous launch won't be forgotten any time soon.

5. eFootball

The free-to-play sports game eFootball was released in September 2021. The co?ncept wasn't a bad one, though the execution left a lot to be desired. Gamers were?? met with atrocious graphics, endless technical issues, and visual bugs that have made for some hilarious screenshots. With a score of 25 on Metacritic, it is one of the lowest-rated games of all time.

4. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition

When it was revealed that the GTA trilogy would receive a remake, excitement wa?s high. Launch day arrived in November 2021, and gamers were less than satisfied. The trilogy was rife with technical issues, ugly character models, and visual errors, which should have been spotted during the QA phase of development. To placate fans, Rockstar offered the original trilogy to all customers who had purchased the rem?ake via the Rockstar Store.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a title that has been a ubiquitous fixture in gaming for years, and not always for good reasons. When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020, the experience was so bad droves of gamers demanded refunds, and Sony eventually pulled the game from the PS Store. Fortunately, the story doesn't end?? on a sour note, as developers have worked hard t??o improve the game, and after several patches and updates, the game is one of the most enjoyable open-world titles on current-gen consoles.

Screenshot by Hello Games.

2. No Man's Sky

Like many other titles on the list, the developers made plenty of big promises before the game's release. When No Man's Sky launched, gamers realized that many of the promised features were missing, and the performance was poor. There was plenty of outrage, though Hello Games didn't abandon No Man's Sky. Instead, developers got to work releasing patches and updates that slowly but surely improved the game. Today, No Man's Sky is a ?bestseller available on almost all platforms.

Concord Servers going offline

1. Concord

Concord's failed launch was so severe that it will probably be studied for years to come. It was enough to warrant an update on this list. It was reportedly the result of years of work and millions upon millions of dollars, and lasted two weeks before it was pulled from marketplaces with a refund being issued to those who had bought it. At least one report suggests that Sony dumped $400 million into the project and was betting on it being the future of the brand. Take that with a grain of salt; it hasn't yet been substantiated. However, the live service sector of the industry is packed to the gills with people hoping to be the next Fortnite, and simply dropping an expensive game in there is not enough to capture the crowd. Whether or not Concord ?reappears in some form in the future remai?ns to be seen.

There's n??o shortage of games with failed launches, and the future will feature plenty more. From these cases, we learn that although delays may be frustrating, terrible launches are far worse. We also see that even the worst launches don't have to spell the end for a game so long? as developers persevere.

The first of Dawntrail’s Savage Raids are coming on July 30 and with so many people diving in, there are some elite raiding groups who take things to the next level and vie for the world first clear - here’s how you can watch th?is epic battle as it happens.

World First clears in FFXIV don’t come with any physical reward, or even in-game titles. Ther?e’s nothing more to this battle of the raiding experts than obtaining? bragging rights, but that doesn’t make these world first races any less exciting to witness or their accomplishment any less impressive.

If you want to watch the raiding groups battle through AAC: Light-heavyweight (Savage), each team will likely be streaming this on their own Twitch channels, but there’s one channel taking the spirit of The Arcadion and adding their own commentary to the mix - MogTalk.

The MogTalk stream will be raising money for Extra Life 4 Kids, a charity which backs local childrens hospitals to help ens?ure children with illnesses get the best of care, so simply ?watching this stream will be not only helping you to figure out the mechanics, but also helping others - so why watch anywhere else?

This World First Race comes after the champions of Pandaemonium, Neverland, signed up with Echo Esports, who boast many World First titles in World of Warcraft. Neverland will indeed be competing in this Arcadi??on World First Race, and in my opinion they’re definitely one to watch.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvOCv2FzYak

There will be plenty of other teams facing off against N?everland, including RAT and likely Aether Group 3, in the battle to be the first team in t??he world to clear the content, although the full list of those competing is not known at this time.

If you want to watch, MogTalk will be streaming the event at ?the following times on July 30, although these times are subject to ?change:

  • July 30

    • 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (PST)
    • 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. (EST)
    • 5 p.m. - 12 a.m. (BST)

The Arcadion raids have thus far been dubbed the most challenging raid series in FFXIV history by a lot of players, leading to some discourse between fans as to whether they’re too difficult. However, the Savage Raids are sure to live up to their name and I for one can’t wait to watch the teams take on the kille?r m?echanics.

Watching the World First Races is not only an exciting community moment in itself, but it can also be incredibly illuminating in helping to prep yourself for your own dive into the new Savage Raids. You can witness all of the mechanics, all of the retries, and admittedly s?ome epic failures along the way safe in the knowledge that your own gear condition (or your sanity) is not at risk.

One trio - Shifty, DiazBiffle, and Sage - dominated Warzone's competitive scene in 2023, until the departure of Sage earlier this year. The remaining duo might have already found their third though, adding one of the most decorated players in Warzone history.

On April 11, Sage stepped away from OMiTGG and stopped competing in Warzone, leaving Shifty and DiazBiffle without a teammate despite previ??ously winning the 2023 WSOW Global Final in dominant fashion. In Sage's absence, the remaining duo went out and made a huge splash by landing Tommey as a potential replacement.

Tommey is currently the highest-earning Warzone player of all time, and previously spent 10 years as a professional CoD player. Last season, Tommey placed third at the 2023 WSOW Global Final, won the Stage 2 Final, and placed second in the Stage 1 Final. Looking at thei??r stacked resumes, it should come as no surprise that this n?ew squad found immediate success in its first official tournament.

In the Oh Mama $30,000 tournament, the trio finished second and received an extra cash prize for getting the highes?t kills game. Ironically, the squad that came in first was Tommey's former teammates Almxnd and Newbz, with replacement HisokaT42.

This won't be the last time these two stacked trios go head to head at the top of leaderboards, and it sets up a compelling rivalry moving forward. Based on previous years, the WSOW usually tends to start in June. If the competition uses the same format for 2024, and this new trio of Tommey, Biffle, and Shifty decide to stick it out, we could be in store for an electrifying head-to-head matchup on the biggest stag?e.

ImperialHal reached the mountaintop with TSM in 2023, securing an Apex Legends Global Series Championship title. However, a historic five-year run with?? the organization is officially ending.

In the Year 4 ALGS regular season split 1, TSM finished 13th place, arguably lower than most fans expected. Then, at the Year 4 Split 1Playoffs LAN event that ended on May 5, TSM finished in 1?7th, marking another disappointing performance. Those results played a significant role in ImperialHal deciding to make a change.

"To put it as bluntly as possible, it had nothing to do with money, it had nothing to do with contracts, it had nothing to do with TSM management, ImperialHal said. "It felt like there was a change needed."

As for what's next, ImperialHal confirmed that he will be teaming up with Zer0 and Genburten on Dark Zero in place of eSikezz, who will now be a free agent. It was also revealed that Zer0 will be the in-game leader for the new squad. After a fi??rst-place finish in the regular season and placing second at the Year ??4 Split 1Playoffs, Dark Zero will be one of the favorites in Split 2, which is scheduled to start on June 1.

"I understand that people will be like it's one bad LAN there's no reason to be so sporadic and make a huge move," ImperialHal added. "But I feel like a majority of my decisions when it came to my career like who to pick up and who to join has been pretty spot on ever since the begin?ning because all I want to do is win."

Imperial leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to top at TSM. With the organization, the decorated pro built ?up an impressive trophy cabinet, including wins at th?e 2019 X Games and 2019 Preseason Invitational and multiple playoff triumphs. TSM has yet to confirm who will be stepping in for ImperialHal to flank alongside Reps and Verhulst.

With recent changes to the structure of Call of Duty esports, commenters and critics alike are looking to figure out how we got here. Now, 100 Thieves founder Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag has weighed in on why he thinks franchising fell s??hort for the Call of Duty League.

Activision recently re-committed resources to competitive CoD on April 16 by reaching a new agreement to support organizations more in the future, but the future didn't always look so bright. Before striking a deal, rumors circulated, questioning if the league could financially survive, and Activision found itself entrenched in a $700 million legal battle with OpTic Gaming over? an alleged ?"unlawful monopoly" over the Call of Duty League.

A key part of the deal was canceling entry fees and a full refund of $25.1 million entry for the 12 organizations who originally paid. A?s a result, this opens the door for organizations to join the league that previously couldn't pay the hefty fee. Nadeshot argues that this would be a pivotal factor in determining if competitive CoD will reach the same highs as i??n years past.

ranked
Image via Activision.

"I actually think it's the competitive format of franchising that has hurt esports, not the actual franchising," Haag said. Before forming the CDL in 2020, Activision formed the Call of Duty World League in 2016. Teams participated in Open tournaments, and a select few qualified for CoD Champs. Because of the franchise entry fee required to join the CDL, competitive CoD no lon?ger held open tournaments and cut down on the number of events per year.

Nadeshot proposes that the league return to the competitive way CoD s??tructured tournaments before franchising. "There are 12 CDL teams. We have five open bracket tournaments a year and then CoD Champs for the sixth event of the year. Then you have the open bracket, where four tea??ms come out of the open bracket and then are placed in pool play with the other 12 CDL teams," said Haag.

Activision has not revealed plans for how the league structure will change following the new deal for the 2025 season. However, organizations have already expressed interest in joining the CDL if there is an opportunity. Activision's concessions in the new r??evenue deal are an?? admission that change needs to be made, and Nadeshot's suggestion could be the best way to ensure financial security for the league moving forward.

Apex Legends has had what might be its biggest hacking incident yet. During the Apex Legends Glo?bal Series tournament this weekend, a number of pros were given tools like wallhack and aimbot mid-match by hackers, prompting the tournament to halt any further play.

Hackers give pro Apex Legends players cheats

A few pro Apex Legends players were afraid to con?tinue playing during their ALGS event recently due to these hackers. This wasn't a case of pros intentionally u?sing hacks, though; instead, a third-party source looks to have hacked the game and started giving cheats to the players mid-match. As a result, a few well-known pros gained the ability to see through walls or aimbot.

//twitter.com/Genburten/status/1769530771969065324

As you might expect, players were blown away that it was happening, and a few posted their live reactions to Twitter. Not only did the hacks ruin the competitive nature of the ALGS, none of the players wanted to continue. Many players just stopped shooting and were likely worried about being accused of cheating live on stream. The result was a stop to the tournament, and a great many players and fans being extremely worried about the state of cheating in Apex Legends.

How did the ALGS get hacked?

After being forced to end the tournament and find a solution for the future, the event-runners had this to say in a Tweet:

"Due to the competitive integrity of this series being compromised, we have made the d??ecision to postpone the NA finals at this time. We will share more information soon."

In response, a video game cheat prevention organization, called the Anti-Cheat Police Department, advised caution in playing further Apex. Easy Anti-Cheat Tweeted about the issue, claiming there isn't an RCE vul??nerability being exploited.

Update (5:48 p.m. ET): Epic has now publicly confirmed it's looked into the issue and have confirmed it to ??be unrelated to Easy Anti-Cheat. "We are confident THERE IS NO RCE [sic] vulnerability within EAC being exploited."

Two prominent members of OpTic Gaming have filed a lawsuit against Activision. Per Bloomberg Law, the lawsuit alleges Activision and the Call of Duty League created a monopoly on competitive CoD.

Activision both owns Call of Duty and runs the Call of Duty League, a professional league where OpTic Gaming competes. The pending lawsuit was filed by H3CZ, the founder and longtime CEO of OpTic Gaming, as well as Scump, a now-retired pr??ofessional CoD player and current member of OpTic's content creation team.

Why are H3CZ and Scump suing Activision?

Hector "H3CZ" Rodriguez and Seth "Scump" Abner filed a lawsuit against Activision, alleging the company created a tournament monopoly in Call of Duty. Previously, tournaments were run by Major League Gaming, Gamestop, Checkmate Gaming, and other companies to allow players to compete at nearly any level. Since the inception of the CDL, the OpTic members are alleging Activision has created the only place high-level competitive Call of Duty players can compete.

According to the lawsuit:

"Activision's acquisition of Major League Gaming in late 2016 already had resulted in an extreme concentration of the professional Call of Duty market. Activision then cemented a complete monopoly over the professional Call of Duty market by refusing to ?grant licenses to organizers and operators of other commercial Call of Duty competitions."

But Rodriguez accuses Activision of more than just a monopoly. The founder and longtime CEO also says Activision forced him to sell the majority of his company. In addition to a $27.5 million entry fee to get into the CDL, the suit says Activision demanded an "unconditional 50% share of the revenue the team generated from ticket sales, sponsorships, and other revenue streams." Those who did not give in to these demands were allegedly cut out of the professional CoD market.

After reacquiring OpTic Gaming in 2020, Rodriguez sought to enter the Activision CoD League as the sole owner of a team. The lawsuit alleges that Activision refused to approve him as the sole owner, which forced H3CZ to partner with billionaire investors in 2021 to get back into the competitive Call of Duty scene. Cond?itionally, the partnerships granted those billionaires a 92.5% ownership share in OpTic IP LLC. Rodriguez says the asset "has had a private market evaluation of at least $100 million."

"Activision told Rodriguez that his team could participate in the new Activision league only if he 'partnered' with billionaire investors that satisfied Activision’s preferences. The terms of that forced partnership were, of course, financially devastating to Rodriguez, as Activision reasonably foresaw," the lawsuit says.

Scump also claims even after r??etirement from the CDL, Activision uses its "monopoly power to prevent these former players from accepting vast categories of revenue opportunities related to professional Call of? Duty."

Activision's response to the OpTic Gaming lawsuit

The company quickly responded to the pending lawsuit with the full statement below via Bloomberg Law:

"Mr. Rodriguez (aka OpTic H3CZ) and Mr. Abner (aka Scump) demanded that Activision Blizzard pay them tens of millions of dollars to avoid this meritless litigation, and when their ??demands were not met, they filed. We will strongly defend against these claims, which have no basis in fact or in law. We are disappointed that these members of the esports community would bring this suit which is disruptive to team owners, players, fans, and partners who have invested so much time and energy into the Call of Duty League’s success."

OpTic members are seeking more than $680 million in damages

Collectively, H3CZ and Scump seek more than $680 million in damages from Activision.

This is not the first time this particular (former) pro player has been outspoken against Activision and the league itself. In 2020, Abner tweeted the following, claiming all CDL players were forced to sign a contract on the spot if t??hey wanted to play.

I didn't hear no bell...

Every fighting game franchise owes an unpayable debt to Street Fighter.

Oh, sure, Street Fighter wasn't the first slugger on the block, and we can tip our hats to forerunners such as Technos' Karate Champ and Irem's Yie Are Kung Fu for pioneering the genre itself. But, inarguably, it was the 1991 arrival of Capcom's Street Fighter II that truly popularised the one-on-one fighter on a global basis, reinventing competitive g??aming, garnering millions of sales in the arcade and home market??, and galvanizing itself as one of the premier franchises in history.

Street Fighter II wrote the blueprint that would be followed by every franchise eager to raise fists and feet in its wake. And while a handful of these excellent fighters would go on to achieve amazing success in their own right building communities, breaking pop culture, and raking in beaucoup bucks ultimately, they all pay homage to the king. When Street Fighter has the throne, you can't usurp it

In 2016, however, something went very wrong. That year, Capcom released Street Fighter V, bringing about one of the worst launches in the company's history. As a fighter, SFV was solid, but the launch was a disaster. Capcom delivered an uninspiring, threadbare title, lacking rudimentary features, missing trademark facets, and sporting a miserable U.I. and abominable netcode. Worse still, the title was devoid of charm and personality. It wasn't that Street Fighter V was terrible, it was... empty. Bland. An avatar bearing a famil?iar name but infused with an apathy that left its world cold and its characte??rs hollow.

In the aftermath of this maligned release, Capcom reevaluated itself. Beginning with 2017's Monster Hunter World, the studio proceeded to knock out a string of hugely successful releases, leading to what is currently the most prosperous period in company history. And this week, seven years on from SFV's notorious debut, the prodigal son returns, determined to showcase improvement, wi?n back its audience, and deliver a top-notch sequel that not only aims to surpass its predecessor, but also stake a claim as one of the greatest entries in the series' decades-long history.

Street Fighter 6 (PlayStation [PS5 reviewed], PC, Xbox, Arcade)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Released: June 2, 2023
MSRP: $69.99

Capcom has openly expressed its intent to conceive Street Fighter 6 as something of a "Make Good" for the misgivings of Street Fighter V, while simultaneously presenting a new era of evolution for the legendary series. SF6 bears the hallmarks of this evolution not only in its core fighting systems, but across every element of its presentation. This revitalized approach includes a ground-up redesign of the audio/visual aesthetic, as well as the implementation of the celebrated RE Engine, in a bold effort to present the most feature-filled launch of a Street Fighter title to date.

While "Evolution" might have been the intended term, "Polished" is a far better word to describe the precision with which Capcom has addressed its sequel. The team has not only ensured that the key elements of the fight itself are to the highest standard of player expectation, but also that all of the smaller, equally important details are also addressed. SF6 sports a better ranking system, more attractive menus, fun side activities, slicker online capabilities, battle damage, cooler Vs. screens, sportsmanship rewards, segmented downloads, improved pl??ayer profiles, and new training tools.

This is not to mention the inventive "Modern" and "Dynamic" control schemes, as well as the sequel's fantastic range of overdue accessibility features. And we're still only scratching the surface ?of the quality on display here.

Welcome to the Punch Party

For the majority of fighting game fans, "Fighting Ground" & "Battle Hub" are where it's at, packed out with an array of familiar modes including Online & Offline Vs., Team Battle, Combo Trials, Training Mode, and Character Guides. Also on deck a?re individual Arcade Stories for our World Warriors, as well as the comical Extreme Battle, which allows for chaotic throwdowns disrupted by a variety ?of modifiers.

It is in Fighting Ground that players will become best acquainted with Street Fighter 6's 18-strong roster, which features familiar faces such as Ken, Blanka, and Ryu from Streets, mixed in with fan favorites such as a (particularly foul-mouthed) Cammy and my own main squeeze, Juri. While some have balked at the concept of launching with "only" 18 characters, it should be noted that SF6 hos??ts some of the best iterations of these characters to date. Equally of note are seven newcomers all of whom are extremely inviting, and many of whom boast mechanics that are wholly new to the franchise.

It is testament to the SF6 roster that these new fighters have already been warmly welcomed by the fanbase. Marisa, Manon, Jamie, and co. have created perhaps the biggest buzz newcomers have ever received in SF history. For the first time in a very long?? time, there is not only a desire to master multiple characters, but almost a stalemate of choice when it comes to experimenting with the debutantes.

Hope you like JP. You'll be seei?ng a lot of that prick online.

Street Fighter 6 cast of skull-smackin' reprobates is given life through the sequel's trump card: it's vibrant aesthetic and full-throated personality. Boasting an "underground" vibe, SF6 feels electric, bursting with character and charisma, and awash in lurid color and bass-heavy beats. While the graffiti-inspired visuals and hip-hop flavor of the piece might not be to everyone's taste, there's no denying that SF6 has been jolted with the identity defibrillator that SFV sorely needed Just?? try to ignore some of those bars in the background raps. Woof.

Our World Warriors have genuine presence and character, emboldened with fantastic models, series-best animation, and charismatic voice work. Street Fighter 6 is dripping with personality and bubbling with dynamism. Its exciting presentation style, superbly designed roster, myriad special effects, great character themes, and sel?ection of colorful and lively arenas are the pulsating heart of?? the entire title.

It feels whole. It feels vigorous. It feels alive.

Driving Miss Crazy

Ironically, it's redundant to spend too much of your precious time describing Street Fighter 6's actual gameplay, given Capcom's confidence in having dropped three betas and a demo to the player base. (You can also read my thoughts in previous articles). But it goes without saying that, once the bell rings, Street Fighter 6 offers spirited, breathless combat, substituting a modicum of speed from its predecessors for increased impact. The RE Engine is a surprising??ly great fit for 2.5D fighting,? (whether by design or by accident), and allows for stellar animation, smooth movement and dazzling effects.

The backbone of Street Fighter 6 is the Drive System, which allows for the armored Drive Impact, the dramatic Drive Parry, and the sneaky Dr??ive Rush abi??lities, as well as an array of Overdrive moves. It is through management of this meter that the player dictates the flow of the fight, ensuring that they have the resources to stay in an advantageous position while being readily open to overspending when victory is in sight.

The key boon provided by Drive is that it provides opportunity for creativity. While SFV suffered from a prison of optimal combos which essentially saw 90% of players fight in the exact same way Street Fighter 6 forces moment-to-moment adaptation, based entirely on the given resources of the two combatants at any one time. It is through the Drive skills that we will see more varied combo routes, distinct playstyles, and character evolution in the coming years. This in itself places Street Fighter 6 over other iterations in regard to its met??a-changing potential.

And yes, I know that?? Drive Impact seems too powerful right now?... Give it time. We'll adapt.

The Ballad of Bosch

Essentially a hybrid of Street Fighter and Sega's Like a Dragon, "World Tour" sees the player create a custom avatar, (a feature that has already resulted in an abomination of ungodly creatures populating the lobbies), before dallying around cityscapes and completing subquests, all while getting into a series of random rumbles on a loosely defined "Search for Strength". As you progress through this mode, your character hooks up with each of the World Warriors, learning new techniques with which to build a bespoke moveset. Ever wanted to have Hadoken, Flash Kick, Yoga Teleport, AND Screw Piledriver? Well, have I got ??the character for you, kiddo.

While World Tour does a great job at helping players get to grips with the basics of Street Fighter, it is, ultimately, a lackluster experience. The problem lies in the narrative and its relation to the mode itself. To be clear, World Tour is not a NetherRealm-esque "Cinematic Story Mode". In fact, upon meeting each World Warrior, the player is treated to a splendid introductory cutscene, before said character chooses to basically stand in one spot and dole out text messages for the remainder of the story. None of the World Warriors interact with each other over the course of the story, generally existing only to offer up new moves, kick your ass in sparring sessions, and passive-aggress??ively accept your gifts.

Cammy did not want the rom-com DVD.

[caption id="attachment_382457" align="alignnone" width="640"]destructoid review hado pizza BUONO!! BUONO!! BUONO!![/caption]

Always the Son (Son)

World Tour focuses on the adventures of your voiceless protagonist and Everyone's Favorite New Character, Bosch a tale of stolen bus stops, a neutered Mad Gear Gang, and the sort of narrative high-stakes that see Bosch kidnapped and Luke telling you to "Go to Jamaica and bring me back a memento" in response. Remember in SFV when Alex thought Dhalsim DHALSIM was a carjacker? Well, similarly non-sequitur writing applies here. Only the delightfully heinous JP shines thro?ugh, easily donning the?? mantle of the series' most despicable villain since M. Bison.

Also... Juri seems really?? fucking depressed. If she wants coffee and a foot rub I'm here for her.

While World Tour isn't the "Street Fighter RPG" some might have hoped, it's not without its charm, and represents only one element of the package of great extra-curricular activities. The Arcade Mode unlocks lovely artwork and fun bonus stages; the combo trials are challenging; the avatar builder is hilarious in its Frankensteinian potential, and the Game Center is packed out with rotating Capcom classics, including gems Magic Sword, Final Fight, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Son Son, and others.

Hey, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo i?s here. That's w??orth the price of admission alone.

[caption id="attachment_382459" align="alignnone" width="640"]street fighter 6 juri review Image by Destructoid[/caption]

As those who have played the beta can attest, load times are lightning fast and the rollback netcode is superb, offering the tightest online in Street Fighter history. For review (PS5), I can report that SF6 sports a steady, reliable frame rate when in Performance Mode, though this is at the cost of some crispness on the character models. It should be noted that I experienced some screen tearing on my display whe?n?? I activated the "Input Delay Reduction" feature, but this may vary with monitors.

Battle Hub represents the more social nature of SF6's multiplayer portion, offered as an optional gateway to online matches. Personally, I love it, with its hilariously broken Avatar Battles, awkward emoting, ?and terrifying rogues' gallery of custom monstrosities. It makes for a neat hangout if you have no pals like me... (except for my girlfriend Juri,? of course.)

You'd probably like me to address the inevitable elephant of monet??ization, so let's do it.

Street Fighter 6 follows a seasonal DLC pattern, with the first season of post-release characters already announced. In addition, Capcom will be adopting a "Battle Pass" format for SF6, ("Fighter?'s Pass") with free and premium tracks offering rewards for players. Costumes, colors, avatar gear, and other items will be purchasable?? via "Fighter Coins" (real currency) and "Drive Tickets" (earned in-game). Each character currently has one alternate costume that can be unlocked through playing World Tour.

The specifics regarding all of the above are expected ?to roll out in the near future.

[caption id="attachment_382453" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image by Destructoid[/caption]

You've got a lot to learn before you beat me...

While the disappointment of World Tour, and the concerning nature of monetization weighs on the title, it cannot be emphasized enough that Street Fighter 6 is a magnificent fighter. From its wide array of modes and features, through its exciting cast, new mechanics, solid performance, and impressive visuals, Street Fighter 6 is a title that radiates excellence. There was a clear commitment by the team to deliver a thoroughly engaging fighter for both the dedicated SF community as well as curious onlook??ers, and this commitment has been fulfilled, resulting in a year-best release and a legitimate GOTY contender.

Fighting games are always a tough review. Every player has their own expectations on how any given example should look, control, and flow, with distinct designs speaking to distinct players. This is why we have such a vibrant and energetic competitive scene, populated with such passionate individuals. Regardless, in Street Fighter 6, Capcom has made a declaration to redraw FGC focus onto its flagship fighting title... perhaps the flagship fighting title... and has successfully delivered an outstanding contender for this coming generation of fighting games. Street Fighter is back on the throne.

And when you come at the king, you best not miss.

While not all of the design decisions and ambitious new modes hit their mark, Capcom's commitment to producing a polished and superlative fighter is readily apparent throughout this stellar release. A compelling roster, exciting visuals, crisp performance, and thrilling mechanics ensure that this prestige sequel is set to champion local, online, and competitive scenes for yea?rs to come.

Simply put, Street Fighter 6 is one of the very best entries in series his??tory.

A decidedly strange selection of esports

The International Olympics Committee has unveiled a ra?nge of games being featured in the Olympics Esports Series, at its official Olympic Esports Week, this year in June. Its selectio??ns are, frankly, pretty odd.

The IOC has occasionally flirted with the idea of including virtual events in its traditionally physical environment. In the past, it's hosted the Olympic Virtual Series, with its 2021 event taking place ahead of the previously-postponed Tokyo Olympics. But there has historically been some resistance to mixing video games, with all its explosions and such, with the Olympic Games.

Enter the Olympic Esports Series 2023, which will culminate in live, in-person finals this June. It's set t??o feature nine events: Archery, Baseball, Chess, Cycling, D?ance, Motor Sport, Sailing, Tennis, and Taekwondo.

To be clear, it is featuring virtual events of those, us??ing specific games. Here's the way that shakes out, as w??ell as the organizing body associated with each competition.

2023 Olympics Esports Series titles

  • Archery: Tic Tac Bow (World Archery Federation)
  • Baseball: WBSC eBASEBALLâ„? POWER PROS (World Baseball Softball Confederation)
  • Chess: Chess.com (International Chess Federation)
  • Cycling: Zwift (UCI)
  • Dance: Just Dance (World DanceSport Federation)
  • Motor Sport: Gran Turismo (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile)
  • Sailing: Virtual Regatta (World Sailing)
  • Taekwondo: Virtual Taekwondo (World Taekwondo)
  • Tennis: Tennis Clash (International Tennis Federation)

Now, if you're even a somewhat-lapsed viewer of Twitch.tv, you've probably noticed these aren't the games topping the viewer charts each weekend. Games like League of Legends and Counter-Strike aren't here. Instead, it's a pretty sports-leaning production, and a bit of an odd one at that. Rather than opting for say, FIFA or NBA 2K?, those real-world sports aren't anywhere to be seen.

Some, like Chess and Gran Turismo, make a good deal of sense, but others are downright bizarre. This isn't to downplay the achievements of anyone who's good at these titles, as my Just Dance scores and Chess.com results will show I have little room to throw stones there. Choices like the simulator-adjacent games even seem in-line with the Olympics, wanting to highlight sports in a virtual environment. But there's also Tic Tac Bow, which some have pointed out has a strangely low download count, and mobile sports game Tennis Clash. It's a strange selection that feels distant from what any regu??lar esports viewer might want to tune in to watch.

The olympics of esports

Even if the Olympics are trying not to highlight the more shooter-focused sides of competitive games though, there's certainly a plethora to choose from. Rocket League is right there, having been previously spotlighted at the Commonwealth esports championships in 2022. Tekken makes a great fighting game entry; though if we're adhering to just one martial art, it would be interesting to see a bracket of Hwoarang mirror matches. (Also, I guess we're not featuring the beautifully bizarre Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game.)

It is, ultimately, a strange mixture of games that ultimately doesn't represent the current state of esports. Then again, I wouldn't have really expected it to. Most of the high-tier competitive video games have their own prestigious summits to climb, like The International or Evo. As much as I'd like to see SonicFox take home an Olympic medal, I think these communities were, and will continue to be, best served by the arenas they've built for themselves. But hey, if you want to try your hand at Olympic glory in Konami's eBaseball, registration and qualifying info is live on the Olympics' site.

MY FIGHT MONEEEEEEYYYY!!!

At the climax of this weekend's Capcom Cup, the last such tournament to be held on Street Fighter V, the publisher revealed that its next pro-season, Capcom Cup X, will have a $2 million USD prize pool, with the first crowned Street Fighter 6 champion walking away with a cool one million dollars.

Street Fighter 6, which launches on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms June 6, will be the exclusive game of Capcom Cup X, and will see players from all over the globe become literal World Warriors, catching flights to a wide variety of official tournaments in order to bag the CPT points necessary to make it to the grand finals expected to be held in early 2024. The huge prize pool is expected to see many ?players, perhaps even retirees, dust off the arcade stick and go for their moment of glory??.

//twitter.com/StreetFighter/status/1627566668821172224?s=2??0

Of course, the promotion of such a lucrative tournament also works in Capcom's favor, as it keeps hype for the new sequel high, as well as encourages large turnouts at the many events that will be held all over the globe between Street Fighter 6's launch this summer and the ultimate showdown next year. Street Fighter 6, as I have iterated many a time, is already shaping up to be a fantastic release, one that hopes to see the brand reestablish itself as the competitive fighting game.

Me? Well, while I will no doubt continue to attend every tournament I am able much as I did for Street Fighte??r V /em> I simply have far too much work to do to grab for the brass ring...

For a grand total of six payloads defended

Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch 2 engaged over 35 million players in its first month of release, it has been revealed via Activision Blizzard's most recent financial report. The team-based shoot??er sequel, which went free-to-play upon launch, hit PC and console platforms on October 4.

The number is more than double that of the title's predecessor, which pulled in some 15 million players during its first month of release back in 2016. Of course, this comparison is somewhat suspect, given that Overwatch was a full-priced title and its sequel is freely available to all. Still, the huge launch will be popular among the folks ??at Blizzard, and provides a very strong base for the developer to build upon.

Despite this success, however, the general consensus toward Overwatch 2 has been mixed. While many critics and fans have been impressed by the sequel's character models, visual effects, and new games & modes, many players have found frustrating in the overall gameplay, the influx of "no price, no stake" players, and the maligned Battle Pass mechanic, which replaces OW?'s goodie-filled loot boxes with a paid grind of rewa??rds weirdly unsatisfactory as it rolls out its drip-feed of boring extras.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGgqyer-qr4

Additionally, criticism has been leveled by some players at OW2's overall meta an incredibly aggressive slant that has seen character damage levels skyrocket, and often leaves more defensive or support players twiddling their thumbs. I, as a years-long Mercy main, have experienced this push for firepower personally. And while my Mercy skills are (modestly) great-to-excellent, I've found myself a little irrelevant in OW2 far more useful to my team as... well... anyone carrying a machine gun, frankly. I used to second Reinhardt, bu??t now I've dropped him entirely, as players are simply refusing to shield.

Of course, these are still early days. There will be a player drop-off, there will be balance tweaks, there will be a readjustment to the five-on-five team sync strategy. Overwatch 2 has clearly done ??a very fine job at pulling in the eyes and ears of players right out of the gate, but retention?? is key, and it will be interesting to see how the sequel plays out over the course of its first year.

Overwatch 2 is available now on ??PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Swi?tch.

One more round for Street Fighter V

Without hyperbole, it's safe to say that Evo 2022 was a huge success perhaps one of the greatest editions of the Evolution Championship Series ever, in fact. Returning in a physical capacity for the first time in years, fighting g??am?e fans were treated to hundreds of exciting matchups, some quality presentation, a fistful of exciting reveals, updates, and announcements, and some amazing in-ring action.

And the good times are set to continue, as it has been officially announced that Evo will be returning not only to western shores in 2023, but also in the east, as Evo Japan makes its own grand stage return next spring. The Japanese iteration of the event will take place at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba, Tokyo, for the weekend of March 31 April 2. While a full card is yet to be announced, Arc System Works' Guilty Gear Strive, SNK's The King of Fighters XV, Bandai Namco's Tekken 7, and Capcom's Street Fighter V: Champion Edition are all confirmed to be in attendance.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9I0GG0UR-k

The appearance of SFV on the main card is something of a curiosity, given that Capcom is looking at a spring 2023 release for its successor, Street Fighter 6. The Industry's Chris Moyse is still betting on a February release, but one would imagine that such a launch date (March at the latest) would be just a tad too late to see the new fighter headline the Evo Japan card. Still, it's quite clear that Capcom will want SF6 out in plenty of time to qualify for next year's Evo USA, so the pre?dicted date still stands.

Evo Japan will return in March 2023. Be sure to check out all of the fighting game headlines from the past weekend over in our round-up guide right here.

Resharpen your blade...

SNK's 2019 release Samurai Shodown is a sharp-ass game in both literal and metaphorical ways. The cult fighter successfully managed to reinvent itself for modern platforms, while retaining the very deliberate, intense, and high-damage combat style of the Neo Geo classics. Packed with interesting characters and powered by an easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master play style, Samurai Shodown is a unique fighter that deserves t??o sit within the current zeitgeist.

And it looks like the cult title is getting the opportunity to take a second swing for the gold, as developer SNK has announced that it has teamed with studio Code Mystics for a new update that will implement brand new rollback netcode for the PlayStation, Xbox and PC editions of the period piece scrapper. While SamSho is a fine title from an aesthetic and gameplay standpoint, unfortunately, the online element leaves a lot to be desired. While, in 2022, you can still find people ?fighting the good fight, lag-free action is harder to come by which is a no go in such a precise, high-damage fighter.

samurai shodown rollback netcode update evo

And so, for the dedicated Samurai Shodown community and fighting game fans in general the rollback netcode update will be a very welcome addition, along with a sign that SNK has not abandoned the title in favor of some of its more modern releases. In fact, it is believed that the new update should bring online fluidity in alignment with The King of Fighters XV, which has very solid online stability once its figh??ts are underway.

No specific release date was announced for the new update outside of the general window of spring 2023. Samurai Shodown is available now on PS4, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia. Once again, the netcode update is only coming to PlayStation, PC, and Xbox?? editions of the game.

Evo 2023 is currently underway. You can check out the full schedule right here.

For the first time in a long time, the greatest fighting game players in the world, (but not me), will descend on Las Vegas for the annual throwdown that is the Evolution Championship Series, more commonly known as Evo 2022. Over the next three days, the best of the best, (but not me), will lock horns in some of the greatest fighting games currently on the market.

From Tekken 7 to Street Fighter V, Skullgirls to Granblue Fantasy: Versus, and, the game of the hour, Guilty Gear Strive, we are promised hours of intense fighting action across three days, as each game looks to crown its champion for the current EVO season. In addition, we can expect news, updates, and reveals pertaining to some of the current and upcoming fighters. Who is headed to Street Fighter 6? What surprises does GG Strive Season 2 hold? Will I ever get the hell out of Ultra Gold?

All (some) of these questions and more will be answered over the next three h?ot summer nights.

You can find the full schedule for Evo 2022 below, complete with links to the appropriate Twitch channels. For simplicity of display, times are listed in PT timezone only. Oh, and be aware that Evo is notorious for running way off schedule, so some events are likely to ?start and/or run later than expected, with stream channels also subject to change.

Tourney attendees can check out Capcom's latest

In news that, quite honestly, was something of an inevitability, Capcom has revealed that its recent Street Fighter 6 demo will be making the rounds at next month's Evolution (EVO) fighting game tournament. Attendees will be able to check out the upcoming fighter live on l?ocation at Mandalay Bay.

While trial sessions of Street Fighter 6 have been mostly confined to the press and/or Capcom's best buddies, the publisher is now beginning to drip-feed access to the public at several upcoming events, such as the aforementioned EVO and the incoming San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). I would not be surprised if, much like with Street Fighter V, we don't also see some form of closed or open beta r??olling out as we exit summer and enter the fall sea??son.

//twitter.com/E??VO/status/1?547219490508767233?s=20&t=XbidzCD5y6vvVQGjKHRCTQ

While Street Fighter fans were hit with an abundance of info (both officially and very unofficially) last month, Capcom has since gone quiet on the new fighter, with nary a new character announcement, trailer, or update to be seen. We are almost guaranteed to hear some new info at EVO, (perhaps even SDCC), hopefully in the form of a character trailer or two. In the meantime, be sure to check out our previous reports on the leaked character roster, the breakdown of Family Man Guile, and a look at the sequel's intriguing new mechanics.

EVO 2022 will take place at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay resort on the weekend of August 5-7. Tomorrow is the final day to register for the event. Street Fighter 6 launches on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox in 2023.

Yakuza heroes (don't) cameo in new DLC

You might have heard the hot scoop that Kazuma Kiryu is about to guest star in Rainbow Six Siege. Well, he isn't, but his suit and haircut sure are. Ubisoft has announced that it is collaborating with Sega to bring character skins of the Yakuza hero as well as his one-time love interest and ass-kicking partner, Kaoru Sayama to its popular online squad?? shooter.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rnZeKj9SWM

The Rainbow Six Siege Yakuza Bundle, which launches on all platforms today, includes looks for Siege's resident "Team Japan," Hibana and Echo. In addition to the character skins, new weapon skins will kit Hibana out with a Police-themed rifle skin, while Echo gets a pearl-colored rifle skin emblazoned with the legendary Dragon of Dojima. Though these are, essentially, Siege characters i?n cosplay, it's still pretty weird to see even a dollar store Kazuma carrying a gun. Later this season, a new Elite skin will see Echo transform into the wildly unpredictable Goro Majima, as teased in the above trailer.

This is not the first time Rainbow Six Siege has ventured into "guest skins" territory. Back in 2020, Rainbow squad leader Ash got her Lara Croft on, while 2021 saw Zofia don the iconic S.T.A.R.S. garb of Resident Evil's Jill Valentine. These crossover costumes are part of Rainbow Six Siege's continued progression into a wider universe of lore evolving from its nationalistic and stringently militant, roots into a more approachable, character-driven, alternate universe. Another example of this new direction lies in the icky, sci-fi sensibilities of 2021's Rainbow Six Extraction, which saw ??the counter-terrorist ??team battle a literal alien invasion.

Rainbow Six Siege and Rainbow Six Extraction are available now on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms. The Rainbow Six Siege Yakuza Bundle is available on all platforms today.

New Capcops patch notes just dropped

Back in February of this year, Capcom angered many within the Street Fighter community, particularly those who organize and participate in tournaments, with its controversial "Capcom Community Guidelines" proposal. This initiative saw the publisher attempting to exert tighter control over all publicly run Street Fighter tournaments, fro??m national gatherings to the smallest of local events.

The guidelines, some of which took legitimately positive steps forward, also raised eyebrows with their stringent rulings in regard to topics such as royalty-free media ownership, prize pool capping, a ban on merchandise sales, the banning of spectator tickets sales, and the reserved right to deny any Street Fighter tournamen??t from taking place should it not fall within the new scheme's guidelines.

capcom street fighter lisence guidelines

While one might understand Capcom's desire to ensure that tournaments and locals that feature the Street Fighter brand will be run correctly, especially given the wild west, generally unregulated nature of the FGC, many saw the rules as being less about safety and security and more about Capcom simply trying to take control of the entire Street Fighter competitive scene on all levels from local gaming bar gatherings to national tournaments with hundreds in attendance. Tournament organizers and players were quick to vent their feelings on social media, whic??h led Capcom to make a tactical withdrawal in order to fine-tune its plan.

Yesterday, the legendary developer/publisher announced that it had completed its revision of the Capcom Community Guidelines, releasing a revised version of its "Street Fighter license" initiative. Amusingly, the revised document reads like patch notes for an SFV update, with buffs an?d nerfs made to several of the guidelines' more c?ontentious rules.

capcom street fighter license guidelines

First and foremost, Capcom has stated that it will no longer take royalty-free ownership of any professional media (live streams, photos, videos, etc) that was captured at a Street Fighter tournament. This was definitely one of the most egregious and grossest demands of the original pr?oposal, so it was a must that this particular rule was stamped out with complete prejudice.

The annual prize pool cap, originally decreed to be $2,000 USD per event and $20,000 or equivalent per year, has been wavied. The prize pool cap for a single event is now $10,000. There is no longer a cap on the total amount of money that can be offered over a 12-month period. Regarding sponsorship contributions, the cap for a single event may not exceed $6,000 USD or equivalent per event, while the annual ??total cannot exceed $30,000.

Tournament Organizers may charge for spectator tickets, but the money made must be used to offset tournament costs. This would seemingly imply that any host running the tournament i??s not allowed to make a profit o?n spectator tickets, and that spectator ticket revenue cannot exceed the overall cost of running the event. If so, then smaller venues might need to pay specific attention to this ruling.

Tournaments can be run at bars and other venues where alcohol is served, provided that the tournament ?is not run by the owner of the establishment itself, nor that the tournament is sponsored? by or advertising any alcoholic beverages.

These are just a few of the most notable revisions Capcom has made to its Community Guidelines document, which you ?can check out in its entirety right here. While all of the above will likely be welcomed by Street Fighter tournament organizers, the antsy nature of having a multi-billion dollar organization hanging over your event like impendin??g danger is a little unnerving especially when such a decree has yet to be declared by the publishers of other major fighting games.

capcom street fighter license guidelines community

While it is extremely important that the FGC regulates itself in regards to player safety, insurance, rule legislation, and etiquette, many TOs might feel some nervousness at Capcom's proposals. Lest we forget, when Capcom thought that 2017's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was going to conquer the world, a leaked internal memo exposed an extremely draconian plan to practically take complete control of the failed sequel's e?ntire competitive scene.

And thus, with Street Fighter 6 just around the corner, (already predicted to be the crown jewel of Capcom's future esports dreams), it's understandable to witness the full-time organizers of the Street Fighter competitive scene eyeing these guidelines with trepidation. These are still the very early days of the initiative, and we'll see how Capcom's tentative handshake with the FGC play?s out as its "Street Fighter license" scheme rolls out over the re??mainder of the competitive year. For better or worse.

Adequately Prepared to Rock

The organizers of the Evolution Championship Series 2022 (EVO) have released an in-progress breakdown of this year's game popularity. The Top 10, listed in order of competitor entries, currently sees Arc System Works' Guilty Gear Strive in the lead as?? the most-entered title of the main tournies.

As EVO returns as an offline event for the first time in two years, the organizers have decided that the schedule will be dictated by the popularity of the games on deck. So while Capcom's Street Fighter has long been the grand finale of the weekend, we could actually see something new round out the weekend's festivities provided, of course, that Guilty Gear Strive, Tekken 7, or any other r??e??lease is able to pull in the most players.

You can check out the nine main games and their popularity (as?? of April 16) in the tweet bel?ow.

//twitter.com??/EVO/status/1515396124684668931?s=20&t=GUgTtw_lAwQZL3umk3_k4w

Following on from Guilty Gear Strive's top spot, a very impressive showing is being put in by SNK's The King of Fighters XV, which currently sits at number three, even ahead of Bandai Namco tournament mainstay Tekken 7. The King of Fighters, while often in attendance, is rarely one of EVO's most popular franchises, and getting the spotlig??ht on the team-based fighter could really help draw in new players and cement its status.

NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat 11 currently sits at number eight, behind niche anime fighter Melty Blood: Type Lumina and ArcSys' Granblue Fantasy: Versus. This is perhaps reflective of NRS' decision to call an end to supporting the title once it had ensured that all DLC had hit the market. While this would cause an expected drop-off for MK, seeing it resting behind cult anime scrappers and games that are years older (such as Bandai Namco's Tekken 7 and Dragon Ball FighterZ) is still surprising.

Fighting the good fight in ninth place is Autumn Games' excellent tag fighter Skullgirls: 2nd Encore, which continues to entertain hardened fighting game players with its divine visuals, an awesome score, and intense gameplay. With more updates and characters on the horizon, the cartoonish classic looks set to run and run i?nto 2023. Kud?os.

Evo 2022 takes place August 5-7 a?t the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Resort ?& Casino.

As part of th?e past weekend's flurry of fighting game news, Arc System Works anno?unced that its professional fighting game circuit, Arc World Tour, will return for another round later in 2022.

While details pertaining to dates, locations, structure remain under wraps for now, the anime fighting game developer has noted that its flagship fighter, Guilty Gear Strive will be joined on the circuit by the fledgling new slugfest DNF Duel, which Arc System Works developed alongside studio Eight?ing. Each game will offer up a prize pool of $100,000 each not too shabby for a new and unproven release.

Players will compete in both games on a national and international stage, before the finalists come together for the tour's climax The Arc World Tour Final which is likely to take place in early 2023, as the very best players for both titles throwdown for the bragging rights of Guiltiest Gear or.. erm... DNF-est DNF'er. You can check out the finals for the ARCREVO 2021 tournament right here.

Guilty Gear Strive is available right now on PlayStation and PC. DNF Duel ??will launch on PlayStation and PC June 28. Get practicing, get out there, and bag those skulls.

Japan's fighting game heavyweights will be climbing back into the ring this weekend, as an array of developers and publishers gather for yet another Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable presentation the third iteration ??of the live stream event is scheduled for Sunday, March 21.

The stream will see representatives of studios such as Guilty Gear's Arc System Works, Fighting EX Layer's Arika, Tekken and Dragon Ball FighterZ's Bandai Namco, Street Fighter's Capcom, Virtua Fighter's Sega, and The King of Fighters' SNK all in attendance, so it will?? be an all-star roster for this particular rumble.

The live-streamed event will see the publishers discuss the current state of the fighting game scene, detail future plans for competitive events, and, hopefully, show off a surprise or two for their?? respective releases. In addition, each studio will be spotlighting its own collection of fighting franchise memorabilia as part of a fun "Treasure Appraisal Project."

While previous Japan Fighting Game Publisher Roundtable events have not exactly been known for hosting any major reveals, we often receive tidbits regarding patch dates, online connectivity plans, and occasionally the odd character trailer. So while viewers would do well to ke?ep their expectations in check,  you can rest easy that we'll be reporting any pertinent news right here on Destructoid.

Japan Fighting Game Publisher Roundtable #3 takes place March 21 at 15:00 JST, which is March 20 at 23:00 PT. The discussion will be streamed live on the Arc System Works Twitch channel.

Taking the L

Capcom has found itself in the bad books of the competitive fighting game community (FGC) after proposing an official "licensing" scheme that could potentially be applied to all Street Fighter V (and presumably Street Fighter 6) tournaments?? held anywhere on American soil, regardless of size.

Round 1 kicked off on February 28, when Capcom outlined its plans for the "Street Fighter V Community License Agreement". In a nutshell, the proposed plan would require all Tournament Organizers (TOs) to apply for an official license in order to run a local or national tournament on flagship fighter Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.

All TOs running SFV would be required to officially run the event under Capcom guidelines, with Capcom suggesting that securing an official registration will add several stages of legitimacy to the tournament, while offering a sense of "insurance" in regards to prize payouts and player behavior at the event itself. Capcom would also supply TOs with marketing assets with which to promote their event, with the TO having the prestige of hosting an "official" Capcom Street Fighter tournament.

//twitter.com/ultradavid/status/14985174788??37612545?s=20&t=_CL?VhdrUARCSGdAB6HojAg

And in the blue corner

The FGC, however, does not see Capcom's plans as being altogether wholesome. Already concerned with the opening "big brother" s??alvo of having a multi-million dollar company over one's shoulder, the proposal also notes that all live streams, video, and photographs of any licensed events automatically become usable, royalty-free, by Capcom. Additionally, Capcom will have the right to limit prize pool amounts, will ban priced ticketing for spectators, ban the sale of official merchandise on-site, and could simply deny the event altogether if it does not fall within company guidelines.

Essentially, the FGC sees the proposal as being less about player security/safety, and instead believes that Capcom is simply trying to control the American competitive Street Fighter scene on all levels, from the smallest local gathering to larger, national tournaments. In response to the proposal, some TOs have already announced that they will simply no longer host SFV tournam??ents at their events, focusing on other fighting games instead. A later statement from Capcom has done little assuage concerns.

capcom community licsense

This rings a bell...

It should be noted that this all sounds incredibly familiar. Around the 2017 launch of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite a title which Capcom was convinced was going to be the biggest competitive fighter of all time leaked plans for MvC:I events featured a similar version of this licensing concept, alongside numerous other big-money plans for the competitive scene. This would not come to pass, of course, as MvC:I  failed to hit as a major league fighter. It seems, however, that Capcom's plans might now be dusted off for both the twilight year of Street Fighter V and likely the incoming Street Fighter 6.

The FGC competitive scene is far from perfect. I have personally experienced problems in regards to payouts, insults, and general poor tournament management. But I wholly understand the TOs concerns here. Aside from the ownership of assets and the dictatorial nat??ure of rules and pricing, Fighting games have always been built on their communal "grassroots" mentality. Capcom's proposals arguably risk implementing control and a sense of corporate capitalism at even?? the smallest, most private of events.

The FGC has always been proud of its "homegrown" "street" mentality, and while the scene certainly needs to see better moderation and player security, having the biggest fighting game publisher in the worl?d breathing down your neck while simultaneously handing over all of your scene's assets to them, free-of-charge, might not be the way to inspire confidence and trust between either party.

//twitter.com/jiyunaJP/status/1498520216??111751172??s=20&t=_CLVhdrUARCSGdAB6HojAg

Fight for the Future

The fighting game genre is going through yet another renaissance, with Guilty Gear, The King of Fighters, Tekken, Super Smash Bros. Dragon Ball FighterZ, DNF Duel, Mortal Kombat, Breakers Revenge, and a slew of awesome indie fighters either on the near horizon or already embedded within the competitive scene. National tournaments have more than enough games to host and competitions to run. Street Fighter is not the "be-all and end-all" of the FGC. (And I'm old enough to have seen it all go down.)

I love Street Fighter, passionately and wholeheartedly. I also want to make it clear that I understand that when a TO runs a game, it is a representative of a brand, and as such publishers will wish to have a hand in how said brand is represented. All TOs need to accept responsibility for the safety, security, and control of their players, spectators, and cash-handling affairs. It is a responsibility and should be treated as such.

Still, if Capcom doesn't tread carefully with its proposals, communicating and listening to TOs while working out what is the best, fairest, least draconian, and most rewarding deal for all parties, then Street Fighter 6 could potentially observe as rough a launch as Street Fighter V worse still, Capcom could find itself with another Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite on its hands, from a competitive stance at l??east.

Long Live the King

There is no fighting game franchise I've spent more time playing than The King of Fighters.

If you tally up the hours, the purchases, the import miles, and the sackfuls of 20p pieces, SNK's team-based slugfest has swallowed up more days, weeks, months, and years of my life than any other fighter... Any other game? Quite possibly.

I became enamored with the legendary fight franchise back in 1994. Its crossover concept, when Super Smash Bros. was but a twinkle in Nintendo's eye, was so damn exciting. By the time the series had introduced annual updates, custom team builds, and awesome original characters, (including my long-time muse, Leona Heidern), I was already hooked, whether battling on an imported Sega Saturn, a hazardously cobbled-together Supergun, or the roughshod MVS cabinet nestled snugly in my college's cafeteria. Hell, I've even played KoF on three ?separate continents. Good. Fuc??king. Times.

KoF sure doesn't look like it used to. We don't open with the "100 Meg Shock!" jingle anymore, and the market it finds itself in is as competitive today as it has been in 20 years. But, with The King of Fighters XV, SNK is putting all of its chips on the table in an all-out effort to please the veteran KoF community, build a fresh competitive scene, and a??ttract a plethora of new players to its star-studded battle royale.

So, ain't noth??ing to it but to do it... Select The Order.

Publisher: SNK / Koch Media
Released: February 17, 2022
MSRP: $59.99

The King of Fighters XV is the catalyst for decades of SNK fighting titles, an attempt to bring together the entire heritage of the KoF series for one almighty release. While not a "Dream Match" title, (such as previous releases KoF '98 and KoF '02), KoF XV nevertheless feels like a "Best Of" offering, sporting arguably the greatest roster ever assembled for a canon release. The new entry holds the KoF ser??ies' legacy in great reverence??, while making efforts to contemporize itself for modern fighting game players.

KoF XV does a fantastic job of retaining the speed, weight, pace, and overall "feel" classic King of Fighters, despite its different baseline engine and visual style. Veterans will be pleased to see the return of the series' four-button control scheme, along with time-honored mechanics such as evasive roll, Blow-Back, dashing, hyper-hops, and the devastating MAX mechanic. While KoF XIV is a title I did not delve too deeply into, I found myself immediately at home with KoF XV's controls and dynamic. Like riding a bike that?'s punchi??ng me in the face. Go with it.

New to the party is the Shatter Strike, which trades meter for a hefty single blow. I have previously likened this to Street Fighter IV's Focus Attack, putting its victim in a defenseless crumple state. Blow Back can still be activated from block, providing a useful combo breaker while propelling the opponent a good distance for that all-important reset. EX moves, Supers, MAX Supers, and the fantastically cinematic Climax Supers; KoF XV is packed with meter-eating mechanics. Add cancels, Super Cancels, and Climax Cancels to the mix, and you have an impressively deep combat system, requiring some of the most complex and efficient?? meter management in the current fighting game scene.

However, as much as this is a boon for expert KoF players, it also works somewhat against SNK's hopes of roping in newbies. In an era when the notoriously complex Guilty Gear chose to strip back its difficulty and tight input restrictions for Guilty Gear Strive, KoF XV retains its hefty learning curve, tight input windows, an??d plethora of movement mechanics, potentially wa??rding off fresh meat.

Thankfully, the "Rush" system should help starters find their footing. Rush allows players to activate simplistic auto-combos into Supers with a few simple button presses. When first starting out, Rush can help players understand the pace and flow of KoF, while also dropping endorphin-releasing strings of attacks. Elitists may scoff at the very concept of Rush, but for getting ?players up-and-running, it's an important mechanic. We need to kick that front gate wide open, not deadbolt it.

As a brief summary for a complex subject: KoF XV is a solid, tight, and incredibly exciting fighting game. It sports a stacked and unique roster of characters, a litany of offensive and defensive mechanics, and is loaded with complexities and potential but in regards to welcoming players, it's still something of a matter of "trial by fire", despite its best?? efforts to onboard newcomers.

Ever since the franchise transitioned to 2.5D, KoF's biggest fight has been with the fans, many of whom are disappointed with SNK's move away from pixelated visuals. One can hardly blame the naysayers, KoF XIII was, quite simply, one of the greatest looking fighting games of all time. But in an age of Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat 11, and Tekken 7, and with the company coffers running low, SNK chose to pull the plug on its expensive legacy looks, replacing its hand-drawn sprites with more easily produced 3D models.

There's no denying that KoF XV's character models have received a major polish from KoF XIV. Everybody looks sharper and better-textured. Bright colors pop and animations flow smoothly, though there's an admitted awkwardness to certain walk cycles, which can be reminiscent of skating (and I'm not just talking about ice-loli Kula). The new character models such as the mysterious Dolores and the returning Elizabeth Blanchtorche are excellent, while the boss characters are among the series' most ambitious designs in years. In general, characters created specifically for KoF XV look fantastic, while returnees from KoF XIV simply sport impressive "digital facelifts".

One element in which The King of Fighters stands far and ahead of its contemporaries is in its gorgeous visual effects. From the luscious emerald flames of Ash Crimson, to the iridescent rainbow glow of Elizabeth's air-slicing abilities, KoF XV has dazzling specials and characterful supers. Hardly the most important e?lement of a fighter, but it sure helps add to the hype.

It's unlikely that the call for KoF to return to its traditional style will ever cease. Hell, I'd love to see this here roster recreated in KoF XIII's beautiful hand-drawn visuals. It simply isn't going to happen, and while that is a disappointment, it's unfair to bitterly state that King of Fighters XV looks bad. It looks different, sure, but it looks great.

Part of the fun with KoF is checking out who fits best into your dream trio. With KoF XV's huge variety of strikers, zoners, grapplers, and rushdown experts all sporting distinctive looks and personalities there is a lot of enjoyment to be had meeting the 39-strong roster. A deep training mode offers all of the tools expected from any modern fighter, while a slim but challenging trial mode sets up a handful of technical combos for each character on the r??oster.

The Story Mode quite heavily hyped by SNK marketing is a bit of a bust, offering little more than a few CGI sequences peppered between what is, effectively, a standard Arcade Mode. Additionall?y, the narrative itself is blah, essentially a retread of the Orochi Saga with Shun'ei, Isla, and Dolores? playing Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru respectively. On the brighter side, each team has its own custom end sequence, while special custom teams unlock artworks and other fun extras. But, for the most part, KoF XV is relatively thin on single-player content.

One of KoF XV's raddest features is the DJ Station, which I'm now demanding for all fighting games. This mode allows the player to customize the entire soundtrack of KoF XV, picking from hundreds of tracks from the entire franchise and other SNK releases such as Metal Slug and Samurai Shodown. Want the KoF XV Pao Pao Cafe to have the Pao Pao theme from KoF '94? You can. Want the character select screen to have the awesome character select theme from KoF XIII? You got it. Once the alternative OSTs scor??es are unlocked (via story mode wins) you can customize the entire soundtrack to your liking.

Bring back that ear-ri?pping?? Neo Geo synth! Sounds great and also Ow!

Competitive players will be pleased to hear that KoF XV has a range o??f tools to make for easy setup of tournaments. Players can auto-save up to 15 custom teams, along with setting up brackets and rulesets, registering player names, and even changing in-game billboards to sport the name of your tournament or scene! Very cool. Ranked, Casual, and Lobby matches are ?all supported for online play, with online training and sparring also available while you wait in line to get your ass handed to you.

I was unable at press time to experience KoF XV's online modes, which sports the much-vaunted rollback netcode. I played the most recent KoF XV beta? for an entire weekend and found that, for the most part, my online experience was slick, responsive, and lag-free. This is provided I faced opponents sporting L??vl.4-5 connections. Lvl.3 connections were a dice roll. Lower levels featured frustrating input delay, though there is an input deficit option for such encounters.

I will update this review in a week's time with my post-launch e??xperience of the full release.

The King of Fighters, despite its legacy in the pantheon of fighting games, has always been an underdog. It was back in 1994, and it still is in 2022. With The King of Fighters XV, SNK has taken bold strides to punch through that ceiling, wi??th a notable effort to produce the biggest release in the franchise'??s history. As to whether the new title will have what it takes to go global, pull in fresh audiences, or blow up the competitive scene... Well, that's another matter.

If KoF XV builds a strong online presence, powered by reliable netcode, a dedicated player base, and generous support from SNK, then there's no reason that it can't find its niche amongst other fighters of the ninth generation. The King of Fighters is literally tit?led after royalty, ?and, some 30 years later, it's high time that it started living up to its moniker.

The King of Fighters XV represents SNK's strongest efforts to reignite the flames of its most prestigious franchise. With fantastic fighting action, a compelling roster, splendid visuals, and revamped online options, KoF XV is a treat for both series veterans and the fighting game community at? large, though newcomers may still find themselves dizzied by its myriad mechanics and steep learning curve.

Worlds is back and better than ever

The Pokémon World Championships is one of the biggest events in esports, and this year, it sounds like it's getting an upgrade. After the tournaments were canceled for the past few years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pokémon Unite will finally be making its debut at Worlds in August of 2022. If that wasn't good enough news, The Pokémon Company also disclosed in a producer letter that Unite will also be getting a new tournam??ent mode to prepare for the game's debut at Worlds that will "even the playi??ng field for players, regardless of their held item grades."

This isn't the first time the event has seen changes, as the original Worlds only featured the Pokémon trading card game. Mainline Pokémon video games were added in 2009 (with a different game being played every year), while Pokkén Tournament got its own championship series in 2016. It was also announced last year that Pokémon Go would be added to the 2022 World Championships as well, along with Unite, so it sounds like?? thi??s year, the event is going to be bigger than ever.

In addition to the news about Worlds and the tournament mode, the producer letter also announced that Pokémon Unite will soon support additional languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi, Russian, Thai, and Turkish. The Pokémon World Championships already welcomes players from all around the world, so hopefully these language updates can help even more players be part?? of the f??ranchise's largest event of the year.

This is all we know so far, so make sure to keep an eye out for any more updates about Worlds and Pokémon Unite's new tournament mode. And of course, jump in-game and start practicing, be??cause qualifying rounds are just around the corner, and August will certainly be here before we know it.

Operation Complete

Big news from the world of Rainbow Six Siege, as veteran designer and current Creative Director Leroy Athanassoff has announced that he is stepping down from the role. Athanassoff?'s departure comes as the popular team shooter prepares to embark on its seventh year of operation.

"I wanted to let you know that due to personal reasons, I will be leaving my role of Creative Director on Siege to pursue other opportunities at Ubisoft," said Athanassoff in a statement. "This isn’t a decision I make lightly I love this game and?? this community, and I’m so proud of everything our team has accomplished together over the last two years but I’m confident that it’s the right one, and the team has given me their full support. Don’t worry, I won’t be going too far, and I have a feeling that my journey with this incredible game is far from over."

"I want to thank Alex (Karpazis), the entire Siege team, and you our amazing community for an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait to see where Siege goes next!"

rainbow six siege leroy roster

Athanassoff has worked on the Ubisoft multiplayer shooter since its rocky inception back in 2016. Starting out as a designer for the title, Athanassoff responsibilities within the Rainbow Six Siege universe grew alongside the title's popularity. Athanassoff would become the Game Director for Siege in the summer of 2017, before eventually taking up the role of Creative Director in 2020, following the departure of team leads Xavier Marquis and Alexandre Remy.

Under Athanassoff's directorial leadership, Rainbow Six Siege has grown from a relatively grey online shooter to an example of excellence in the genre. Athanassoff's turn at the head of the table has seen Rainbow Six Siege reach beyond its "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six" roots, with a heavier emphasis placed on appealing, charismatic, and engaging characters, as well as deep lore cinematics, a refocus on esports, and an increasingly inclusive and LGBTQ positive roster of operators.

In opening up Siege's world, lore, characters, weapons, and gameplay, Athanassoff has only served to broaden the horizons of what "Rainbow Six" can be, while simultaneously adding heart and character to its explosive and chaotic universe. Athanassoff's contributions toward making Siege the spectacular title is it today still enjoyed b??y millions of players cannot be underestimated.

rainbow six siege leroy iana

In Athanassoff's stead, Ubisoft has appointed Alexander Karpazis as the title's new creative director. A Ubisoft veteran since 2017, Karpazis has most recently worked as a designer and art director for Rainbow Six Siege, and is thus partly responsible for the game's transition from grumpy dude-bros in dusty warehouses to a more colorful cast of characters within an overall more welcoming visual design. It will be interesting to see what Karpazis brings to the role as Siege enters the first season of Year 7.

Rainbow Six Siege Year 7 is expected to l??aunch at some point in March 2022. The Six Invitational 2022 tournament is currently scheduled to take pla?ce between February 8-20, 2022.

Rough start to Street Fighter V's twilight year

Capcom has announced that it has decided it will be canceling the Capcom Cup 2021 event, which would have seen the best Street Fighter V players from the 2021 season gather for the final showdown. Already delayed from its typical November slot, the rise in global COVID-19 cases has forced Capcom to, sensibly, err on the side of c??aution and cancel the gathering completely.

"The team did not come to this decision lightly, as we know what Capcom Cup means to the community and the players who trained so diligently to qualify," explains Capcom in a sighing statement. "The entire esports team offers our sincerest apologies. Please know we ??shar?e your frustration, as we wanted nothing more than to have this event return in a big way, but the health and safety of the players and everyone involved is our highest priority."

Of course, we have been here before, not 12 months ago. And, much like the 2020 edition of the event, the Capcom Cup 2021 will now play out as a remotely distanced online tournament. The Cap??com Cup VIII finalists will compete in an online capacity which, while not ideal, will at least afford the contenders a finale for?? the year-long effort.

It's a tough start to a year that not only sees Street Fighter V enter its twilight season, but also sees the Street Fighter franchise celebrate its 35th anniversary. The somewhat stripped-down logo for which, (depicted above), was revealed this past weekend. This year will also see Capcom reveal its next Street Fighter project. While assumed by many to be Street Fighter VI, these words are yet to b??e specifically uttered by Capc??om.

We'll have to wait and see exactly ?what The World Warriors are bringing to the new generation.

Dig out that neon sunblock

It's freezing today here in Blighty. Straight freezing. So I have little recourse but to jot down a few words about the sun-baked world of Windjammers 2, in a desperate attempt to feel those '90s rays, warm sands, and Global Hypercolor shirts. It's been such a long, long wait for Dotemu's Day-Glo sequel, but our roster of international contenders are finally ready to hit the beach when Windjammers 2 finally launches on PC and consoles January 20.

In order to plug these last few weeks in what has been a years-long journey, Dotemu has released a neat 30-minute documentary looking at the development of the new game. The video spotlights the talented team of designers an?d developers tasked with taking Data East's classic 1994 arcade and revitalizing it for a brand new generation bringing the disc-flinging action up to speed while retaining the exciti?ng action and devil-may-care attitude of the '90s original.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI0F5CkYR40

Windjammers 2, first unveiled waaaay back in 2018, hopes to capitalize on the franchise's latter-day resurgence, which has seen the multiplayer title become a mainstay of major fighting game tournaments such as EVO. Due to its "easy-to-play hard-to-master" gameplay, as well as its lurid and attractive visual style, Windjammers has won over a community of brand ??new players, all of whom are no doubt tingling with anticipation for the new sequel.

Starring a roster of 10 uniquely skilled characters (including six returning characters) Windjammers 2's gameplay includes new arenas, revamped gameplay, and dazzling new EX moves. The sequel will feature ??both single and multiplayer modes, as well as crossplay between Xbox and PC platforms. It already looks like a faithful recreation of the original, and Dotemu has more than proved its pedigree at bringing back the classics for new g??enerations of players and hardware. Frankly, it's probably the closest I'll be getting to the beach this year, so let's do this.

Windjammers 2 launches January 20 on ?PS4, PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia.

Giddy up, gamers

Long gone are the days where only the highest octane shooters and MOBAs make a name for themselves as esports now, as long as any aspect of a title can be turned into a game that's competitive in nature, it too can become a spectator sport. Stardew Valley is a perfect example of this, as its creator held a tournament to complete various in-game tasks for over $40,000 in prize money. I personally love that indie games are breaking down the dudebro culture that is still pervasive in the esports scene, and now Farming Simulator has also been added to those ranks.

Apparently, this isn't news to those in the know, because the Farming Simulator League has been going strong since 2018, where the ?name of the game is who can stack hay bales the fastest. Which like, yeah, what else did you expect it to be?

The League's third season is coming to a close this weekend, when the world championships will be taking place. The tournament will incl??ude eight different teams compe?ting for a prize pool of â‚?00,000.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaekYYSLMQI

So what exactly does a match look like? (Or is it a game? Round? Help me out, Farming Sim enthusiasts.) First the teams go through a pick-ban phase, where they can choose which pieces of equipment will be sidelined this is similar to how the competitive League of Legends teams ban certain Champions. Next, the players take turns picking out their equipment, which is used ?to bale and stack hay, and then the g??ame finally starts, where players race around the map collecting as much hay as they can and delivering it back to their barn.

It sounds sim??ple in theory, but in practice there's a ton of strategy that goes into it, just like any other esport. There are other mechanics involved, too, like power-ups and bridges, which adds even more complexity.

I was never much of a sports fan, so esports aren't really my thing either, but it's cool to see how this part of the gaming community has grown over the past few years. Farming Simulator certainly wasn't the esport that we ??expected, but it sure as hell is the one that we deserve.

Send your best monster off to fight the world's finest

Two classic Monster Rancher games are getting their deluxe ports brought over to the West next month. And to mark their arrival, Koei Tecmo has announced a special Monster Rancher tourna??ment, dubbed the Monster Koushien W?orld Battle.

The first Monster Koushien was held in 1997 at the?? Tokyo Game Show. Ever since, it's been the representative tournament for the monster-raising series, and it's being held this year in a global fashion.

When Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX launches on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, you'll have the o??ption to participate in the tournament. Sim?ply raise a winner and upload their data to a special server, where the top players in the world will be decided.

More details will arrive in the future. The store pages for the Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX releases have also gone live, on both the eShop and Steam.

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX are ports of the original Monster Rancher games, brought forward to modern systems. It's not a remaster, so go in expecting that same P??layStation 1 style from the original entries. That said, if you enjoy raising a monster, managing training and health, and then competing in the arena, it's still that Monster Rancher.

It's been ages since I first played these games, and I have to say, I'm looking forward to diving back in. I don't know if I'm quite up to snuff against the greatest raisers and trainers in the Monster Rancher world, but maybe I can teach my Mocchi or Suezo a few tricks by tournament time. And if these ports work out, then I can maybe hope beyond hope for a port of the Monster Rancher Battle Card g??ames. There are dozens of us who played them, and they are pretty good!

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX arrives on Nintendo S?witch and PC via Steam in the West on Dec. 9, 2021.

But that's just fine, says developer Riot Games

It might be one of the biggest esports scenes in the digital gaming sphere, but mega-popular MOBA League of Legends is yet to turn a profit as a sport in over 10 years of operation. That's according to comments from LoL developer Riot Games.

Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post (as reported by GamesIndustry.biz) Riot Games' head of esports John Needham openly admitted that League of Legends' competitive scene simply hasn't been profitable for the company in the decade since its initial launch. Importantly, Needham notes that profit for Riot isn't a key goal of the LoL professional league, and apparently has never been a key focus of the competitive scene at all. Moreso, the goal is to make it profitable for sponsors, teams, and the professional players themselves, in order to keep the scene at??tractive and sustainable.

"We like to call ourselves the future of spo??rt," Needham told The Washington Post. "That’s what we think we’re building [...] If I can’t make esports a great business for teams and our sponsors, then we’re not going to last long. We’re very much thinking about, 'How do we make the entire ecosystem profitable?'"

It doesn't take a business wiz to understand that League of Legends as a professional sport might not bring Riot Games profit directly, but is one hell of an advertisement for what has become one of the biggest video games on the planet for the best part of 10 years. Through its competitive scene and myriad tournaments, Riot Games can make announcements, show off new characters, drop rad music videos, and generally introduce players globally to the world of LoL. It ?might not make any profit, but the ensuing merch and in-game sales no doubt cover the spread. If Riot can ensure that the competitive scene breaks eve??n, then the studio will be sitting pretty, at least financially, for years to come.

Quake III pulls ahead, wait a minute!

I'm a huge proponent of gaming history and preservation. I lived through a lot of eras of gaming, and remember it all. The LAN cafes and people going crazy over Quake III. People in my area trying to make it big in the fighting game community in local tournaments, and the bourgeoning Halo regional scene. And of course, the national phenomenon of StarCraft overseas. It was all fascinating to watch, bu??t this very quick and enlightening esports growth chart visual aid really drives home how big some of these games were, and currently are.

Posted on Reddit by PieChartPirate, the esports growth chart starts at 1998 and ends in the present era, cataloging prize pools. At what is essentially the dawn of esports, Quake II, QuakeWorld (now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time), and StarCraft Brood War were at the top of the charts. In just one year Brood War completely shoots ahead, followed closely on its heels by Quake III Arena, which was gaining massive popularity with the rise of online play. Amazingly, Quake III pulls ahead, but the ominous Counter-Strike appears.

In just several years, starting around 2003, Counter-Strike pulls ahead by a long shot and dominates by at least a million dollars (if not more) until 2014. At that point its reign is over, as League of Legends, StarCraft II, and Dota 2 are all in position and gaining popularity. From then on, given the massive amounts of cash Valve injects into the latter, it's Dota 2's game to lose. CS Go enters the fray as the second-highest total prize pool placeholder, followed by Fortnite in third and League in fourth.

There are so many stories told in this esports growth chart: each of which probably deserves its own symposium. One of my favorites is the low-key appearance of Age of Empires II in the early 2000s, and the fact that Descent 3, a game I played mostly alone, had a $50,000 prize pool. It's also sobering to just sit down and realize how much money Valve makes in a day, an?d how their chokehold over the esports scene has lasted nearly two decades.
