Yo, She-bitch... Let's go.

Saber Interactive has launched a brand new mode for its cartoonishly gory multiplayer title Evil Dead: The Game ?The new "Splatter Royale" mode is now availab??le to download on PC and console platforms, free of charge, and offers up a fresh/rotten new take on the battle royale genre.

In Splatter Royale, up to 40 players step into the viscera-soaked world of The Evil Dead, donning the gross, splatte??riffic visage of any of the roster's demons, or, alternately, a Deadtite-turned variant of Evil Dead's many heroes. Once you've selected your death dealer, then it's off into the woods, to fight it out in an every-demon-for-thems?elves competition for gory glory.

Navigate the grim terrain, arm yourself (quite literally in Ash's case) with any and all scattered weaponry, and take on all comers in a bid to be crowned the Last Deadite Standing. There are a lot of cool characters on offer, and a massive variety of mayhem-dealing weaponry. But no matter who you chose, and no matter whether you're rocking a hammer, shovel, or the all-new grenade launcher, all entrants to the Evil Dead Splatter Royale can be sure of ??one absolute certainty: You Will Get Wet.

In addition to the new mode, a new paid DLC bundle is also available. The "Immortal Power Bundle" adds a new survivor in the shape of Ash vs. The Evil Dead's Ruby Knowby, portrayed on-screen and in-game by the former Xena: Warrior Princess herself, Lucy Lawless. In addition, the bundle contains four new skins for Ash vs. the Evil Dead stars Kelly, Pablo, and, of course,? Ash himself, as well as a new "King of the White Frost" skin for the Puppeteer class demon. The Immortal P??ower Bundle is available now, priced at $9.99 USD.

Evil Dead: The Game is available now on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms. It will be available to download for all PlayStation Plus subscribers from February 7.

Little Goody Two-Shoes himself

It's sure been a busy gaming year for Evil Dead's premier deadite slayer Ash Williams, not only has the chainsaw-bedecked smart-ass received his own brand new video game, but he is now joining the star-studded roster of Epic Games' juggernaut battle royale release, Fortnite.

Ash, boomstick and all, is one of several additions to Fortnite's annual Halloween event ?the amusingly titled "Fortnitemares".  This celebration of everything spooky and ooky kicks off across all platforms today, bringing with it themed maps, modes, characters, and weapons.  There will be a selection of free seasonal cosmetics dolled out to all players who partake in the event, with Ash Williams, Rick & Morty character ??Queen Summer, and the Meseeks ?all arriving as paid DLC. ?? Look at Ash's cute doe-eyes.

Additionally, keep you?r eyes peeled for some Gothic-looking "Alteration Altars" that will be springing up around the island, as visiting one will grant your character some limited-time werewolf powers! Cursed players will be granted new "Howler Claw" attacks, as well as a lofty double jump ability and heightened animal senses, which will allow you to track your nearby opponents with ease.  If you hear a heartbeat on the soundtrack, then watch out, as it means one of the lycanthropic beasties is onto you.

From a lacerated sky

Saber Interactive's Evil Dead: The Game gets its most exciting update since its launch today, with the arrival of the Evil Dead 2013 DLC Pack, now ?available to download on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox.

The new DLC sees Mia and David Allen, sibling stars of Fede Álvarez's great pseudo-remake, join the roster of Survivors as Warrior and Support class players, respectively. Mia ?marvelously portrayed in the movie by Jane Levy ?is a fearsome Deadite slayer when up close and personal, and sports a trait that sees her damage actually increases as her fear level rises. Mia can also unleash her own Deadite nature, as one of the few humans ever to s??urvive ?Deadite possession. Check her out in the trailer below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4wR_u6-Q2E

As a Support class character, David provides a central beacon of unwavering strength and hope for his teammates. David is equipped with healing abilities ?for both himself and his brethren ?and is also able to severely reduce the fear of characters in his vicinity. Much like in the brutal movie, David is equipped with a violent nail gun, as well as, somewhat more hilariously, dual-w??ielding syringes. These new weapons are also readily available for use by other Survivors.

In addition to the tw??o new characters, the DLC bundle includes a new single-player mission, "Weekend at Knowby's," which is loosely based on the events of the movie. This mission features a variant of the Knowby Cabin, complete with the terrifying blood storm that concludes the film. A brand new screamer, (which remains an obnoxious and weirdly cheap-looking element of the game), is also included in the new bundle.

Evil Dead: The Game is available now on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox. ?A Switch port is reportedly in development, though, admittedly, news has been particularly quiet on that front for some time now.

The one that got away...

Saber Interactive, developer of Evil Dead: The Game, has announced an official arrival date for Mia Allen, fan-favorite protagonist of Fede Álvarez's great 2013 pseudo-reboot, Evil Dead ?Mia will join her fellow party of survivors in the asymmetrical horror title on September 8, with her sights set on b??lood-splattered revenge.

In Álvarez's film, Mia Allen (Jane Levy), her brother David, and a party of their friends stay at the fated woodland cabin in an ill-advised plan to go "cold turkey" on her heroin addiction. Unfortunately for Mia, her incredibly unlucky pals, and a particularly hapless dog, an ancient and malevolent evil descends upon the campsite, leading to demonic possession, cruel turns of fate, a storm of pure blood, and some truly hopeless and stomach-churning viole?nce.

While Saber is yet to fully reveal Mia's in-game abilities, they have teased footage of her very nicely crafted character model, which captures the morose, no-nonsense personality of Mia, complete with her casual gothic style. Machete in hand, our girl looks more than ready to stand alongside characters such as Eric the Red, Kelly Maxwell, and, o??f course, Ash Williams himself.? In addition, brother David will also be joining the roster, trusty nailgun in hand. Mia and David will receive a full trailer at a later date, which will include a demonstration of Mia's "resistance to demonic possession."

I guess she built up an immunity...

Feast on this, Motherfucker

[Update: Literal minutes after this story went live, Saber Interactive officially revealed that Mia Allen will arrive in Evil Dead: The Game next month as part of the season one DLC pass.]

Very exciting news for fans of Evil Dead: The Game, as developer Saber Interactive appears to be teasing the arrival of a brand new DLC character. And it appears to be none of than Mia Allen, the gore-covered, deadite-smashing, skin-peeling star of the stellar 2013 reboot of Sam Raimi's 1981 horror clas?sic.

Helmed and co-written by Fede Álvarez in his directorial debut, Evil Dead reimagines the unholy tale of the absolute nightmare that besieges a group of friends staying at an isolated log cabin. With the goal of supporting Mia as she attempts to go "cold turkey" on her heroin addiction, the group instead finds themselves terrorized by an ancient evil as utterly malevolent as it i??s completely unstoppable.

//twitter.com/EvilDeadTheGame/status/15592333?89097541633?s=20&a??mp;t=fXvnL1dA8dOAzbOAC6hiuw

Mia, in particular, becomes the target of the demonic entities, and soon finds herself possessed by its will, leading her own friends to horrifying ends. While on paper "Evil Dead Remake" soun??ds like a disaster waiting to happen, Álvarez's film surprised many fans with its brilliantly vulgar photography, shameless, extreme violence, and suffocating sense of persistent hopelessness. Actor Jane Levy also put herse??lf through the wringer playing the tortured Mia, in one of those leave-nothing-on-the-table performances that don't get quite the industry acclaim they deserve "because horror movie."

Evil Dead: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer title that pits a squad of heroes ?pulled from various films across the series ?against a single player controlling the forces of the demonic Kandarian army, unleashed once again from The Book of The Dead. Launching back in June, Saber Interactive has since updated the title with new content pulled from 1992's Army of Darkness. Hopefully?, the next update will not only in?clude Mia, but perhaps some representations of the demons featured in the 2013 release.

Ash and Mia... together at last... battling side by side. While we are still left waiting for such an occurrence within a cinematic realm, I will quite gladly take ?it in the digital?? one.

Evil Dead: The Game is available now on PlayS??tat??ion, PC, and Xbox platforms. A Nintendo Switch edition is in the works, though updates on this port have been quiet for some time now.

Well helloooo, Mr. Fancy Pants...

Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games have released the first major DLC update for their multiplayer horror title, Evil Dead: The Game. Now available to download on all platforms, the content drop contains ma??ps, modes, and weaponry for you and your posse's battle with the spooky ??Deadite army.

Themed after the third mainline Evil Dead movie, Army of Darkness, (aka The Medievil Dead, aka Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness), the DLC features a much-needed new map, styled after the castle keep from the 1992 horror co?medy. Visit the fortified Castle Kandar, the notorious abandoned windmill, and the Arthurian Outpost as you and your fellow monster slayers gather the mythic artifacts necessary to banish the Kandarian Demon an?d its minions to the Netherworld.

//youtu.be/WP8NAS8J5zA

In addition to the new map, two suitably medievil weapons are being added to the in-game arsenal in the form of a powerful explosive crossbow and the Homer Simpson standard, a handy, skull-crushing mace. In addition, a brand new "Exploration" mode will let solo players explore the maps at their own pace, which is perfect for learning the layout and practicing your demon mashing skills before jumping online with highly skilled randos. All of the aforementioned c?ontent is free right now for all players.

If you're a die-hard deadite and fancy dropping some dollars on some cosmetic content, then a new character skin bundle is also available for purchase. The Medieval Bundle ($7.99) contains new outfits for Henry the Red and Lord Arthur, along with a snazzy Golden Gilded ensemble for the Necromancer Army. This bundle also contains a brand new jumpscare. You read that right, paid DLC jumpscares. The Ash S-Mart Employee Outfit and The Gallant Knight outfit are also available as separate purchase?s, priced at $2.99 each. No sign of Embeth Davidtz. Heartbroken.

Evil Dead: The Game is available now on P?layStation,? PC, and Xbox platforms. A Nintendo Switch edition is expected later in 2022.

No one would deny that the (once) cult horror franchise that is The Evil Dead is deserving of its legendary status, but it also cannot be denied that its frequent entries into the video game world have certainly left something to be desired. While each movie, from Sam Raimi's seminal 1981 classic to Fede Álvarez's great 2013 remake, has brought iconic characters, d?elirious carnage, and bucketfuls of ?the red stuff, the video game exploits of franchise star Ash Williams have never quite lived up to the series' inherent potential.

From the original bland computer game (1984), through the boring and cumbersome Hail to the King (2000), the blah Fistful of Boomstick (2003), and the tepid Evil Dead Regeneration (2005), the horror franchise has struggled to truly deliver the relentless, maddening, tongue-in-cheek chaos of its source material ?a pretty stunning feat for a franchise that features a dude with a chainsaw arm. It's been a long time since a developer took a fresh stab at The Evil Dead but, here in 2022, Saber Interactive ??is gonna give it another shot.

And thus, today we're looking at the unceremoniously titled Evil Dead: The Game, an asymmetric multiplayer experience that will pit Ash and his hapless posse of doomed friends and acquaintances against the terrors of the Kandarian Demon and its putrid, decaying soldiers, the Deadites. Will the fanbase, finally get the groovy Evil Dead experience they've dreamed of? Or is it just ??The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Err?or?

Load up your boomstick and oil that chainsaw. Let's get in ther??e... and carve ourselves a witch.

Evil Dead: The Game (PlayStation [PS5 reviewed], PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)
Developer: Saber Interactive, Boss Team Games
Publisher: Saber Interactive
Released: May 13, 2022 (Switch TBA)
MSRP: $39.99

Taking the lead from previously established horror titles such as Illfonic's Friday the 13th: The Game, Predator: Hunting Grounds, and of course Behavior Interactive's hugely popular Dead by Daylight, Evil Dead: The Game pits a party? of Survivors against a single player who acts as puppeteer to a variety of tricks, traps, hazards, and, of course, rabid, slobbering Deadites. It is the job of the four survivors to complete a series of map-based objectives: complete the Necronomicon; find the Kandarian Dagger; resurrect the terrifying Dark Ones; and then banish them, finally sending the evil back whence it came.

The Survivors are a selection of class-based characters pulled from the Evil Dead franchise. From Ash's tormented sister Cheryl and his wanker mate Scotty, to Army of Darkness' Henry the Red and Lord Arthur, and, of course, modern-day Deadite mashers Kelly and Pablo from the hit show Ash vs. The Evil Dead. Each character brings with them special attributes, abilities, and weapon expertise, so while you can hold your own with almost any ??part??y of four, savvy synergy will put the odds in your favor. I currently rock Annie Knowby ?standing proud in her boy scout shorts and woolen sock combo.

On the side of all that is unholy, the Kandarian demon can choose from a selection of equally unique demons, including classic Deadites, the skeletal army of darkness, the terrifying Eligos, and even the grotesque Henrietta, the hideous villain of Evil Dead II. In addition, the Demon can possess Survivors under certain circumstances, lay traps in trees and supply chests, and place motion-activated ??spawn points for their Deadites. When not controlling a specific Deadite, the Demon? whizzes around in first-person, beautifully recreating Sam Raimi's "ram-cam" effect.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po3gmy71w6A

Just me, baby, Just me

Games of Survivor vs. Demon, the decaying meat of the Evil Dead experience, are essentially fast-paced, chaotic, and understandably messy, both in a literal and technical sense of the word. While teamwork is of the essence ?at least for the Survivors ?it can sometimes lead to an exercise in frustration when your partners go a-wanderin'. Crucially, however, the core gameplay of Evil Dead is good, gooey fun, its cathartic violence and splashing cla??ret making up for its?? shallow simplicity.

Players race around a grim 'n' gloomy map, gathering ramshackle melee and ranged weaponry, and fending off the Deadites as they push through each objective. Well-timed specials, strategic teamwork, and cleverly placed traps can turn the odds in a team's favor, while the match breaks down and gets suitably chaotic as it reaches its climax. Chaos and disruption are the core themes of the Evil Dead series, and the game recognizes this, both for better and worse.

When not engaged in multiplayer action, Evil Dead offers up five single-player missions for some of its key characters, the completion of which unlocks new Survivors, alternate skins, and Professor Knowby's sinister recordings. These missions are surprisingly tough, and must be completed with a single life. They also go some way to helping the player understand much of Evil Dead's features, from its combat and class abili??ties, to its use of pickups, fear met?er management, and large, open-plan maps ?maps that are woefully easy to get lost in.

While Evil Dead does feature its?? own tutorial, it is the mini-missions that truly teach the way of the workshed.

Honey, You got real ugly

As the play sessions progress, Evil Dead: The Game begins to show its rougher edge. While developers Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games should be co??ngratulated for delivering an awesomely immersive and authentic Deadite experience, the game is kind of... well... it's a real goddamn mess.

Characters will find themselves tumbling through the environment, getting stuck on trees and rocks, or dizzily crashing into the scenery with a real disregard for recklessness. Laugh as your friend's foot disappears into a rock, thrill as you drive a car on two fuckin' wheels like Connery in Diamonds are Forever, and raise an eyebrow to a Deadite? senselessly spinning on the spot like they're about to Klaatu Berada Niktu their ass ??into the stratosphere.

There's something wholly, let's say... "PS1" about Evil Dead: The Game. You have a vault button, but it's so situational that your character will often be unable to use it to even ma?ntle a mere log. You? enter and exit vehicles with no animation whatsoever ?just "BINK" and you're in. Command prompts can be painfully unwieldy, leading to multiple instances of searching for a sweet spot to simply pick up an item or teleport into a passing car. Press a button and find that nothing happens, press it again, and it works!

I wouldn't say that Evil Dead is rushed, and it's definitely not half-ass. It's clearly a passion project for the dev squad. But it is in major need of further polish. The cameras are dizzying, weapon aiming is weak, the driving mechanics are basically "bumper cars," and the irritating "jumpscare" mechanic, (whereby a spoopy JPEG flashes on-screen, accompanied by a way-too-loud nois??e), is simply jack and shit. And jack left town. (But serious??ly, get rid of it.)

However, despite all of this "jank," as the kids call it, Evil Dead still comes with relatively high recommendations for both asymmetric multiplayer and die-hard Dead Heads. Behind the stumbles and pitfalls lies an authentic, cathartic, and fun action experience ?whether playing as a hapless survivor or a stop-motion monster. In fact, a charitable person might suggest that so?me of the aforementioned terriblenesses adds a dose o??f stupid, old-school charm to the proceedings, much like pointing out the wires or camera shadows in the original flick.

I'm playing on a PS5 in 2022? but my c??haracter can't climb a shin-high rock?... Groovy?

evil dead the game review car

Swallow This

Evil Dead: The Game is a flawed-but-firm base for what may become, one day, a truly great multiplayer horror title. With more varied content and a lot of tweaking, it could easily evolve into one of 2022's most fun releases ?perfect for low-intensity Saturday night shenanigans with a gang of button-mashing buddies. At its fairly mid-tier price point, it also doesn't break the bank for those looking for loud ''n' proud head-severin', demon-mashin', saw-revvin' action... the raucous answer to the scalpel-precise Elden Ring.

As a multiplayer-centric title ?one set within a relatively niche franchise ?Saber Interactive will need to ensure that it keeps its audience swiftly engaged. Dead by Daylight has somewhat cornered the market on asymmetric horror, and if Evil Dead wishes to remain contemporary, it will need to build upon this promising launch with technical improvements and solid, engaging content. Oh?, and let's get Mia Allen in t?here. The party can't start 'til that cellar-dweller gets here.

Evil Dead: The Game is an authentic and passionate recreation of a chaotic, violent, and wildly slapstick classic. Though plaudits are deserved for the title's atmosphere and fan-pleasing references, a litany of technical hiccups, unstable mechanics, and odd design choices frequently hinder this promising release. In time, Evil Dead can become something very special. But as it stands, it still delivers a fistful of fun for?? its ravenous fanbase. Shop Smart.

This fusion works so well, it's kind of scary

As breezy as Army of Darkness can be, I don't always have time for a proper rewatch ?but this latest movie-meets-gaming creation from hilarious video editor eli_handle_b․wav sure does the trick. After highlighting their work getting Austin Powers in Mass Effect, it's only natural that we'd circle back to spotlight Ash Williams in Resident Evil Village.

(Note: if you haven't gotten to Village yet, there are some boss sp??oilers in this video.)

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSx9_iCTtSQ

After watching the Evil Dead movies far too many times as a kid (and still to this day), and running through Resident Evil Village an equally absurd amount, this video hits right. Pairing Ash's unhinged outburst with House Beneviento's freak?y family of dolls is just ri??ch.

As with eli_handle_b․wav's other edits, it's all about maximizing t?he memorable lines ?finding the right spot to squeeze in each puzzle piece without it all feeling ?forced.

While some of these YouTube memes lean into a live-action movie or TV character seeming wildly out of place for the sake of humor, I'm starting to picture Ash Williams carving up the entirety of Resident Evil Village, and its out-of-control story still (mostly) makes sense. I can see Ash getting up to a lot of wacky shit, but a castle-storming adventure feels on-brand. He totally would ham it up w??ith Heisenberg, wouldn't he?

The cheesy goodness of Evil Dead and Resident Evil Village is super compatible. It's a charcuteri??e board of horror, and I'd play the hell out of this maniacal mash-up.

Ash and friends will fight the armies of the dead on Friday the 13th

Looks like the Evil Dead won't be breaking out of hell just yet. Evil Dead: The Game has been pushed back a bit, and is now set to launch on May 13, 2022.

The Saber Interactive project has been delayed a few times now, most recently slipping o?ut of 2021 and into February. Now, this new delay knocks Ash and company's journey back into May, and oddly enough, onto a Friday the 13th date.

//twitter.com/EvilDeadTheGame/status/1487085949825785??857

Though originally aiming to be a multiplayer-oriented game, last year's delay was set to afford time for both polish and a single-player option. That way, players could take on the undead even ??without co-op pals.

The setup for Evil Dead: The Game sees Ash Williams join up with other series characters, like Eric the Red, Cheryl, Scotty, and Kelly Maxwell, to face off against demons. Players can also play as the unholy?? t?errors.

In a world where co-op games, especially those featuring the undead, are quite popular, it seems like a ripe time for some Evil Dead. This latest delay will, according to the team, give?? them the time they need to get things "just right."

There will be some Evil Dead news to come in the meantime. Alongside pre-order info, there's also going to be a new trailer in February.

So while the campy horror action will take a little more time to debut, it's probably a good thing overall. A little extra polish can help, and February is already looking like a packed month for new games. Some extra breathing room may give Ash and pals some m??ore time to shine when May 13 rolls around.
