Plus a few other deals

Plane tickets are ?expensive. If you want to go che?ck out the Himalayas, you're looking at several thousand dollars. "In this economy?!," Steven might scoff.

A more affordable route to world tourism is through Ubisoft's rendition in Far Cry 4.?? It's half-off on Amazon for the day, ringing in at a reasonable $30. Tha?t's seems like a fair price for a honey badger to maul your face off.

Amazon ha??s a few other deals going on too that might pique someone's interest. There are even some common amiibo on modest discount for anyone that's balked on picking them up until now.

Or just keep on riding on elephants, that's cool too

Already tired of everything Far Cry 4 has to offer? You're in luck, because Overrun, the latest batch of content for Far Cry 4, is available today.

This is a more multiplayer-focused endeavor, with a brand new PvP mode in which two factions (the Rakshasa and Golden Path)?? compete to score points across two rounds by controlling zones that are active at a specific time. Basically, if you're interested because of the name or the fact that you get a dune buggy, keep all that in mind if you're more of a "fly solo" person.

Additionally, there are four new map??s included. You can pick up the DLC on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. If you've been itching to match up against other players rather than sad little AI dudes, now's your chance!

Keys were purchased with stolen credit cards

Just over a week after Ubisoft deactivated digital copies of Far Cry 4 purchased through various third-party resellers, the publisher has reactivated copies of the game that have been played in some capacity and has permanently deactivated the rest. Apparently, the codes in question had been purchased from Origin using stolen?? credit cards, leading to the mass deacti??vation.

"We are working with EA to prevent situations like this from happening again, and we will continue to deactivate keys that are found to be fraudulently obtained and resold," Ubisoft said in a statement to Game Informer. The k??????????????????????????eys in question came from sites such as G2A, a peer-to-peer code selling website.

G2A's marketing manager, Marek Zimny, spoke to Destructoid back in January regarding the mass code deactivation. "G2A is well aware of this process and will do everything possible to compensate for that. For users who have made transactions without G2A Shield, we will check if the corresponding merchant was responsible for the withdrawal of the code," Zimny said. "If so, these users will get a compensation."

Ubisoft reiterated the importance of buying codes from less shady retailers (like Amazon) or approved shady retailers (like GameStop). "We strongly recommend that players?? purchase keys and downloadable games only from the Uplay shop or ?trusted retailers."

This one isn't free

In addition to the free Assassin's Creed Unity DLC out today, Far Cry 4 is also getting an add-on. Escape From Durgesh Prison ?is a timetrial of sorts, where you race the clock to best your friends on leaderboards.

The DLC supp?orts solo and co-op play, and will feature permadeath, where you have to restar?t the entire mission over again after a failure. If you purchased the Season Pass ($29.99) you can pick it up for free, or pay $9.99 for the privilege, which seems steep.

Two wonderful things

We already knew that Far Cry 4's level editor was an open invitation for masterpieces to be made. That much was evident after this goat butt stabbing video surfaced. But??, some people are making more serious playgrounds.

One of the finer examples is this fairly faithful recreation of the opening area of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. It still has all of Far Cry's animations and mechanics strapped to it, but picking off guards with a silenced pistol looks so wonderfully Metal Gear.

Far Cry 3 was one of my favorite games of 2012. It didn't stray too far from the normal sandbox conventions set b?efore it, but gallivanting around beautiful island vistas and flying about with wingsuits was sweet.

For some that wasn't enough, though, and for those folks, Far Cry 4 won't ??be enough either. Bu?t for me, it's still pretty damn fun.

Far Cry 4 (PC, PS3, PS4 [reviewed], Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Release:  November 18, 2014
MSRP: $59.99

Away from the archipelago ??of the Rook Islands, we now find ourselves in the vast expanse of the Himalayas in a land called Kyrat. The new protagonist, Ajay Ghale, has returned to his homeland to spread his mother's ashes in Kyrat at her request. The only problem is Pagan Min, the ruling warlord. Min has history with Ajay's family, and knows he's coming. Ajay is thrown in the middle of an all-out war between Min and the Golden Path, a resistance movement led by Ajay's father, thus sparking the narrative and giving you reasons to shoot things.

This time around Ajay is a bit less in-your-face than Jason was in Far Cry 3, and the game is more enjoyable for it. Ubisoft deliberately downplays most of the main character's dialog, and while Ajay isn't quite a silent protagonist, he doesn't say a whole lot. While I'd definitely prefer a well-written, vocal lead character, Far Cry 4 puts the spotlight on the supporting cast, allowing players to focus on the ??action at hand from Ajay's position as someone simultaneously new to Kyrat, but not quite an "outsider??".

The real star of the main event is easily Pagan Min himself, played to perfection by Troy Baker in one of his best turns yet. His outfit, mannerisms, and actions all make him a villain worth pursuing, and he steals the show every time he's on-screen . Even the in-game guide is written by Min, offering up some humorous takes on the? lore. His army has some more flavor than your typical mercenary crew found in most sandbox games as well, with proper in-world context to justify their outfits and abilities.

The story itself takes place over the course of 32 campaign missions, which will no doubt take ages to complete as you get distracted by pretty much everything else. There's 24 outposts to take, over 200 collectibles to find, radio towers to scale, and 100 extra quests to complete. There's also two major characters in the campaign to side with, and choosing one over the other will change the course of the story slightly and give you access to different missions. Of course, I spent the first 20 hours hunting and completely ignored the story. Just like Far Cry 3, it's very easy to get distracted here.

There are also a small number of "Fortresses" to take, which are basically bigger and tougher outposts with individual alarm systems. The developers even hint in-game that you should complete story missions to weaken them first or take them by way of co-op (which I'll get to later), but it's an awesome feeling to carry on as a one-man army. Even if you haven't earned enough skills to say, take down the H?eavy units with a stealth kill, you can still work around it by systematically going around them to take everyone else out, then cut the alarms and improvise. They're like miniature puzzles to solve, and are easily one of the stronger points in the game.

Taking them also affects the meta-story in Far Cry 4, as it stops the ongoing attacks to the outposts you've already claimed in that particular region. At f?irst I was kind of annoyed that outposts could be reclaimed by the enemy, especially since losing one takes away a hard-earned fast-travel point. But after two of my posts were stolen I was emboldened to take the fort at any cost, which was a pretty awesome feeling and led to a real sense of accomplishment.

It's this mechanic and the increased count of dynamic e??vents that attempt to make the conflict in Kyrat seem more authentic. While in the end it's still all very "gamey" and not truly organic, the experience never really feels dull. At nearly every turn some random event could happen, drawing you into an exciting car chase, or a rescue op to save a comrade from a army of honey badgers, when what you originally planned to do was hunt some docile little animal.

By the end of the story you may no?t care so much about the Golden Path, but you'll remember all of your personal stories and interactions with the characters.

Once again the developers have nailed the actual shooting mechanics, and driving is improved this time? around with the "auto-drive" button that lets you hand over the steering to the AI -- allowing you to take in the sights, make a sandwich, or focus on shooting your sidearm while riding. Movement is still very open, as a heap of different travel options are out there including various cars, hang gliders, rudimentary flying machines, and even a grappling hook that has the power to scale mountains and swing from specific catch points. Elephants are fun to ride and stomp around with, but they're even more fun if you're watching them from a distance as they make ragdolls out of the enemy.

Due to the mountainous layout of the region, everything in Far Cry 4 is more vertical. For the most part getting around isn't inherently difficult, but the mountains themselves can often obscure parts of the map, which makes them feel like gates to prevent you from getting to a location faster. It all opens up more as you explore and unlock more fast-travel locations, but there was something special about the vast seas of Far Cry 3 that really resonated with me.

While I personally prefer the less hilly setting of Far Cry 3, the exotic locale of Kyrat does have its perks?. Not only is the wildlife more interesting, but the lore actually feeds more into the region in general, giving it more of a purpose than most sandboxes. It's also beautiful on a current-gen system (especially during the Shangri-La dream sections), with long draw distances and incredibly impressive setpieces. The map most certainty does not have a cheap feel to it -- you can see for what feels like miles, and it's almost all accessible.

Don't expect a whole lot from the Elephant (defense) and Tiger (offensive) split skill system though, as it unfortunately feels like a copy and paste from Far Cry 3's tree. While the rest of the game makes an effort to forge its own identity, the actual skills are still uninspired, to the point where some of them weren't even worth picking up in the first place (not once have I found shimmying steal?th kills or a faster repair ability essential). Karma on the other hand is actually a nice addition, offering a more traditional way to "level-up" with the locals by going out of your way to help. In return, you'll get better deals on items and weapons as well as better assistance from the AI out in the wild.

All in all, the campaign is fantastic and completely worth buying Far Cry 4 for alone??. But wait? Isn't there multiplayer in there somewhere? W??hy yes!

Multiplayer comes in two flavors in Far Cry 4 -- a competitive five-on-five mode called Battles of Kyrat, and co-op. The former is a basically by-the-books asymmetrical versus mode, with soldiers (Golden Path) going up against a more technical mystical group (Rakshasa) gameplay that leaves both sides with different powers. One side has more raw strength, the other is more tacti?cal and can teleport, basically.

There are three modes -- Outpost (base capture), Propaganda (bomb offense), and Demon Mask (capture the flag). You've seen this all before, and you've seen it done better. Though it is a serviceable addition, I feel the same way about Battles of Kyrat as I did with Tomb Raider's multiplaye?r?? -- a zero sum gain that doesn't help or hurt the campaign. Most players will just outright skip it.

Co-op on the other hand is a bit more enticing. In essence, you can flag your campaign session and play online (or completely avoid co-op altogether by? starting your playthrough with the offline option), which lets random players or friends join your session for a bit of help or general tomfoolery. You can't play story missions together but you can enlist them to take down just about everything else in y??our game world, including fortresses.

The limitations of co-op are probably the worst thing about it (it's a pain to have to stop your crucial story progress and start up again), because it works as advertised and it's actually quite fun. It would have been great if the other multiplayer bits were scrapped entirely in favor of creating a fully featured co-op mechanic that allowed for zero discrepancies though, because the feature feels less like a groundbreaking addition and more like a diversion. As a side note, the PS3 and PS4 platforms allow you to send out 10 two-hour trials to your friends, even if they don't own Far Cry 4.

The last online component is probably the most interesting -- the map creation and selection system. Here you can craft unique maps that have a variety of objectives like horde style gameplay or base defense, and unleash your creations to an online database. It's very rudimentary and only?? supports one player (plus you have to log into uPlay to create), but it reminds me of the old PC mod days in many ways, especially with a few of?? the wacky maps that are out there right now with low-grav modifications and floating islands. I ended up playing it far longer than Battles of Kyrat, but the main event is decidedly the gigantic sandbox.

Far Cry 4 c??ould have all of the multiplayer elements stripped away and it would still be a very strong game. If you enj??oyed its predecessor and didn't grow tired of Ubisoft Montreal's open world formula, you'll have a blast living the experience again.

Poor Pagan Min. He tries ruling his regime with a positive influence, but all those terrorists are there to just, ahem, "muck" it up. Yuma looks like one tough customer

Far Cry 4 is certainly shaping up to have quite a colorful cast, with the eccen?tric self-proclaimed king Pagan Min?? and now his newly-revealed second in command, Yuma.

Yuma is a "deadly tactician" and a??cts as the general of Min's Royal Army, leading the militant forces occupying the war-torn region of Kyrat. And by the looks of things, she seems to share her boss' penchant for the c??olor pink and dyed hair.

The Himalayas look nice, too

As someone who tended to stick with the bow as the weapon of choice in Far Cry 3 -- and especially in Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon -- I like the look of the mythical Shangri-La in Far Cry 4.

In these levels, you'll fight against strange masked foes with your bow, but there's also a tiger (that can go invisible!) to provide backup on your meditative journey. My only concern is that the missions might outstay their welcome -- although that's more a general fear of open-world game design than anything to do with Far Cry 4 specifically.

Even if that does end up being the case, though, Shangri-La is breathtakin??g. And I'm not just saying that as a justification for my need to max out the skill tree.

'Here?s a palette, a brush, and a canvas. Go wild.'

Think back on Far Cry 3. Reflect on all the memorable moments you had with that game. What sticks out the most? The missions or the unscripted stuff ?that happened in the open world?

Chances are you primarily remember the unscripted stuff, mostly due to these moments being wholly unique to just you. Everyone got to experience the missions the same, but it was those open-world encounters that were special because they only happened?? to you.

With Far Cry 4, the team is looking to make it so the missions themselves are just as memorable as the open world. Mark Thompson is the narrative director on Far Cry 4 and he's the best man suited for this task thanks to his prior role as Far Cry 3's level designer.

"As a level designer, I’ve always been a storyteller," Thompson told Destructoid. "Every time you build an environment it has its own meaning, it has its own purpose, it has a story to tell just through it??s setting, architecture, and its composition. So for me storytelling is about the world and the environment and the experience that you create for people. The possibilities they create for people inside that environment.

"For me, and especially with something like Far Cry -- when we saw from Far Cry 3 that kind of the allure of the open world, the experience that people can have, we looked at the data from Far Cry 3 ?and we saw what people were doing. We tracked player behavior and we could see people spent just as much time in the open world as they did in the missions and the main story path," he explained.

"At the start of Far Cry 3’s development we obviously didn’t have that information ... so we start writing the story [and] the characters at the same time you start doing paper design for systems and environment. In Far Cry 3, those two thin?gs were done in parallel, but without necessarily a lot of time spent on the connection between those two experiences.

"Originally the open world in Far Cry 3 was designed to be something to do between bubbles of mission gameplay. So for it was more about changing the approach to developing everything at the same time with connectivity embedded in everything. So that everything you do in the open world is ?connected to the things that happen inside missions. The characters that you see in cinematics you see from them, you hear from them, and you can see their impact on the world outside of story moments and outside of missions."

Thompson doesn't necessarily like to say they have a story in Far Cry 4. It's more that they have? a big world that you can experience in a variety of ways. They want to leave players enough room to take away their own ?stories and moments.

"We aren’t doing anything other people haven’t done," he stated. "I’m not going to tell you we’re going to revolutionize storytelling in games, right? We’re trying to do what we think is going to be best for Far Cry based on what we learned from 3. It’s challenging in an open world to make a story have a through line that resonates, attracts, and motivates people but at the same time have this smorgasbord of distractions. It’s like trying to serve courses at a buffet resta??urant [laughs].

"In terms of the story and trying to bridge that divide between what players can do in an open world and what happens inside missions and cinema, for us on FC3 at some point someone coined the phrase 'Anecdote Factory' for the open-world experience. You can go in the game and you play for 15 minutes and you leave with two or three stories that you know won’t have happened to anyone else. You were the author, you were the witness, you saw the ev??ents happen."

However, this didn't really happen with the missions in Far Cry 3. Sure there were a handful of memorable moments, but players weren't really having conversation??s about the story because everyone was experiencing the same thing.

"No one had that personal investment, or that excitement you get when everyone is trying to one-up each other with their own stories. So for 4 in terms of the narrative -- like I said we’re not redefining or smashi?ng paradigms -- but just trying to give people that same ability to take away something personal from missions ... The game doesn’t really present choices as it were -- it’s really more about consequences. Some decisions you make sometimes more explicitly, sometimes less explicitly -- there’s definitely the idea that the choices you make have consequences.

"The theme of the whole game is about the consequences of your actions. I wanted to give the story or the narrative experience that same kind of level of consequence. The choices you mad??e have actions, and they have repercussions. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes morally ambiguous, but all the same, two people are going to meet and talk about a mission and not even realize they were both having a different experience."

It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds given th??at there's still a linear story in place. The ?people you meet in the course of the game seem to have an impact on how events unfold for players, but I just hope it's more than granular good or bad choices.

"It’s ??just about trying to engage people," Thompson noted at the end of our discussion. "Rather than us say ‘This story is absolute, you must follow it. Connect these dots and it will paint a perfect picture.’ It’s more like 'Here’s a palette, a brush, and a canvas. Go wild.’"

Keys to Kyrat

PlayStation gamers will be able to invite their friends for a round of cooperative play in Far Cry 4 even if said friends do not own the game. We've known about this for a while, but more specifics have come out of the PlayStation g??amescom 2014 press conferen??ce.

Far Cry 4 owners will get 10 "Keys to Kyrat," which can be sent to other playe??rs for up to two hours of co-op play in the gam?e's open world. Explore, capture outposts, and murder animals together.

No animal sacrifices this time

As indicated by part one of the video series chronicling the Far Cry 4 developers' trip to the Himalayan region, the?y seemingly rushed off to watch an animal sacrifice nearly as soon as their plane touched down. The second part is a bit more reserved, if you consider riding on top of buses that are likely to careen of??f the road to be a step back.

Fascinating cultural differences and dangerous feats aside, it's interesting to watch the developers comment on aspects of the area, and how they're going to incorporate them into Far Cry 4. Make sure to keep an eye out for t??he "L?ittle Old Lady Using a Step to Sharpen Her Blade" side mission.

Think I'll just play it at home, thanks

I want to play Far Cry 4 and, yeah, scaling a mountain like Everest would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip -- but playing Far Cry 4 *on* Mt. Everest? Not for me, sadly.

That said, someone out there -- the one lucky person chosen by Ubisoft for its Quest for Everest contest -- is going to have a hell of a time. If you're interested in being that person, the instructions and rules for entry can be found over here. The winning video submission will be announced at PAX Prime which, jeez, will be here befo??re we know it.

I'm curious to see what tha??t "one-of-a-kin??d gaming device built to withstand the harsh conditions of the Himalayas" looks like. Sounds heavy.

So like a Norman Bates thing?

Ubisoft released an interview with Far Cry 4 executive producer Dan Hay that tip-toes around the relationship between the game's striking villain, Pagan Min, and its returned-home-to-spread-his-mother's-ashes protagonist, Ajay Ghale.

Lots of maternal stuff going on here. Can't wait f??or some psychoanalysis.

Pretty fetching, no?

Meet Ajay Ghale, your dashing new Far Cry 4 protagonist. Ubisoft has released the very first official image of the guy you're going to potentially spend hours upon h??ours chasing down and killing dudes with, and he looks like a real baller, shot caller.

After traveling to Kyrat on account of his mother's dying wish, he becomes embroiled in a civil war against the maniacal Pagan Min. That's that othe??r evil-looking blonde dude featured on the cover art that everyone Pho?toshopped.

I'm actually a fan of this character design. What do you guys think? You know what I'll be an even bigger fan of? Seeing the game in action. I just don't know? if it'll ever trump the first time I met Vaas.

Semi-auto grenade launchers anyone?

You all saw the gameplay footage of Far Cry 4, right? Well I got to play through the demo myself, specifically focused on taking over the outpost (now referred to as fortresses). We saw how to take it over from the sky at the press conference, but I decided to take things diff??erently by riding a big ??elephant into battle.

It was glorious.

The demo had us spawn right outside of the fortress gates, and I immediately hopped on the nearest elephant and had it ram right through the front door. I ran over the first couple of guards I saw, then jumped off and hid in a corner while my ??elephant went wild. The elephant will only attack whoever is attacking it. So it'll remain your buddy until you inadvertently shoot the poor beast.

While that elephant was doing its thing, I was trying to explore all the new features of Far Cry 4 while I had the chance. I went up to a car on a hill and saw that you can now cut the breaks, and doing so will make the car immediately?? roll down the hill. You're damn right I filled it up with C4.

Next I used ??some throwing knives to take out guards silently. I got spotted being too overzealous with the knives, so I used my big old MG and sawed-off shotgun to deal with the ever growing amount of guards coming in.

Then I found it. The big beautiful semi-auto grenade launcher. It's exactly as it sounds. Just?? be careful in your rage lust as I quickly ended getting killed, partly because I opened up the weapon wheel by accident and ??selected the meat bait. Yeah you can lure predators to you with meat now.

After my hands-on time I learned a little more about the sharing system that's going to appear on the PS4 and PS3. You can invite your friends on PSN to help you play the game in co-op even if they don't own a copy of the game. This system as I learned will be limited in some sort through a ticketing system. Exact specifics weren't given, but it sounds li?ke you'll be able to share the game with a handful of people, over say ??all 100+ people on your friends list.

Far Cry 4 is building on Far Cry 3, and exp?anding on it in all sorts of ways. I??'m excited for more, but until then I really enjoyed what I got to play.

Just let me ride an elephant

You can decide how big of a grain of salt you want to take this phrase with, but Ubisoft "accidentally leaked" the first story details for Far Cry 4 by "inadvertently" putting a page for the game on the company's store. But, the Internet sees all, and of course, some keen eye caught it.

Here's the description, as Ubisoft tells it:

Hidden in the? majestic Himalayas lies Kyrat, a country steeped in tradition and violence. You are Ajay Ghale. Travelling to Kyrat to fulfill your mother’s dying wish, you find yourself caught up in a civil war to overthrow the oppressive regime of dictator Pagan ?Min.

Explore and navigate this vast open world, where danger and unpredictability lurk around every corner. Here, every decision counts, and every second is a story. Welcome to Kyrat.

Ubisoft didn't outwardly state it, but the protagonist's name makes it sound as if he'll be Indian or Nepali. Also, the game's creative director tweeted that whoever's featured on the co??ver art isn't the player and isn't white, despit?e looking incredibly white. Even though this is shrouded in mystery at the moment, I'm sure it won't be long before everything's cleared up.
