Russia argues rainbow soccer jerseys are dangerous to children

Russia is at it again. Russian MPs have sent a letter of complaint to the communications oversight and state consumer protection agencies asserting that FIFA 17 may be in violation of Russia's 2013 "gay propaganda" law that claims the presence of positive h??omosexual material in media will do "harm to children's health and development."

In this case, it was EA giving out a free rainbow calcio kit that led to Communist MPs sending the letter. EA gave away the digital item in support of the Rainbow Laces campaign meant to combat homoph?obia, biphobia and transpho?bia in the sport.

According to The Guardian, Communist MP Valery Rashkin says the family-friendly-rated game needs to be investigated by the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications to ensure it is in compliance with the 2013 law. Following that, authorities should order the developer to, "introduce changes to the programm??ing code or the age classification of this information product, and if it refuses, adopt corresponding restrictive measures."

FIFA 17 could even end up banned in Russia. United Russia MP Irina Rodnina told Russian newspaper Izvestia that authorities need to "verify the possibility of distributing this game on the? territory of the Russian Federation," noting, "Every state has its internal laws and order; they need to be obeyed."

EA is doing another one of those extended trials

We don't typically do much FIFA talk around these parts, but I know you're out there. I know some of you are into these games! If you've held off on this year'?s installment but are willing to set aside the time and storage needed to download an extended trial, this is the news for you.

On Xbox One and PlayStation 4, FIFA 17 will be free to download and play from Thursday, November 24 at 10:00am Pacific until S??unday, No??vember 27 at 11:59pm Pacific.

There are caveats, of course: this isn't the entire unrestricted game (it's "all in-game features, Ultimate Team, and a portion of The Journey game mode") and there's a 10-hour limit on your play time (though seemingly only on Xbox One). What's more, "EA Access subscribers who played FIFA 17?? during the pre-release limited time trial may not have?? full access to the 10-hour free trial."

With that in mind, this could be a good way to gauge your interest in the game and determine if the full version is worth getting yet at Black Friday pricing. Your story mod??e progress will carry over.

Viking veto

One of this year's feel-good stories in soccer (football, fútbol, the beautiful game) was Iceland's run to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016 earlier this summer. The tiny Nordic country improbably made it through the group stage before ousting England in the round of 16. During that upset, 99.8% of television watchers in Iceland were reportedly tuned into the match. Some 10,000 people showed up to a rally spot in Reykjavik to honor the squad with the Viking-Clap after its loss to France.

Despite all this momentum for the Icelandic national team, it will not appear in FIFA 17. According to the BBC?, Iceland rejected EA Sports' offer of $15,000 to cover trademarks and image rights. Geir Thorsteinsson, president of the Football Association of Iceland, said "They are the ones buying these rights, and they almost want it for free. I really feel if we are giving away rights, or offering rights, it has to be proper negotiations and fair fees." Iceland made a counter-offer that was not accepted by EA.

For comparison's sake, FIFA 17 will feature 47 national teams at launch. India is the lowest-ranked country to make the cut at 148th in the world. Iceland currently sit?s as the 27th best i?nternational squad.

EA Sports has not yet offered comment about this matter. FIFA 17 is set to release next week. While Iceland is sure to be left out at first, don't discount the ??idea that it'll be added in later. If the player-base turns this into enough of A Thing, EA just might pony up the cash that Iceland fee?ls it deserves.

Details arise right before EA's E3 conference

[Update: EA announce??d "The Journey" with a really hokey live actor playing Alex Hunter. Haha, E3 has be??gun!]

Much like the NBA 2K "MyCareer" mode, EA is adding in a similar "Journey" gametype to FIFA 17. Based on this new trailer we have an idea of how it will play out -- with you starring in the role of Alex Hunter, the newest Premier League ??star.

A bit more info is available on the official site, which states that you can play any club, and will interact with other pro players and premiere league managers. Promising "emotional highs and lows," the story will allegedly be altered based on your choices (including how your team views you). There's even a 'lil Mass Effect dialogue wheel.

This all sounds like the typical hype, but if done well, it could be a nice gateway into the FIFA series for new players. Think of the drama!

No gameplay in this trailer, naturally

Like Rory McIlroy PGA Tour before it, this year's FIFA will use the Frostbite engine. Well, on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, that is -- the last-gen PS3 and Xbox 360 versions aren't going to, which presumably mean??s they'll be sticking with the old Ignite engine. I'd keep my expectations in check.

FIFA 17 will hit all five platforms on September 27 in North America and?? Sept. 29 worldwide.

Last year at E3, EA had Pelé tell us stories. This year, the company won't have its usual presence on the show floor with a big, loud booth, but it will still have its upcoming games playable off-site and hold a press conference. That's streaming Sunday, June 12 at 1:00pm Pacific. ?May G?od have mercy on us all.
