The gaming landscape as a whole has greatly shifted from the good days of the single-player games and the split-screen co-op, to a more online-oriented strategy. It's not the case that these games just don't exist,? obviously, but the big-picture look drives us more and more toward online-focused, multiplayer experiences. That's fine if done well, but we'll always need great single-player campaigns, so let's honor the best of the best. Easy task??.

Below, I've outlined 15 of the best games you can play by yourself. While some of these may have a co-op campaign or some online functionality, those aren't their driving factors. With that in mind, let's go ahead and break down th?ose top picks, spanning console and PC generations new and old.

15. Baldur’s Gate 3

Please don't take Baldur's Gate 3'?s "low" ranking in my list of best-ever single-player games too harshly??.

I just think it's too early to find a more permanent placement as BG3's very young, and I still, admitt??edly, have to get many more hours into the RPG so I can properly gauge its grandeur. Please see this awkward placement in this ranking as me just putting a pin oi it ?and betting that this will be an all-timer. Perhaps even one higher on the list in a future update.

14. The Witcher 3

Even though its rather simplistic combat mechanics leave its action paling in comparison to the likes of the Souls series, that's the only nit I have to pick with The Witcher. And not doing one thing as well as one of the best series of games ever made can't be that big of a problem. Everything else is there, from gorgeous graphics to a captivating story fi?lled with dozens of memorable characters.?? Also, the DLCs could probably take a few ranks, too. But I'll limit it to one.

Truth be told, just hopping on Roach and going on a roadside trip alone to see all the moving vegetation will release more hap??py brain ch??emicals than most games out there.

13. Final Fantasy VI

Allow me to spoil it for you right now: you won't find Final Fantasy VII higher than this. This is the only Final Fantasy game on this list, and it w??as a pretty tough decision to make.

Wanna know what's weirder? I actually would've gone with VIII, and I know various loyal soldiers at Destructoid who would have my back. Still, even I have to accept that if there's one game in the series that came closest to doing everything right, that game is VI. It might look old as heck nowadays, but I'd argue that its 2D art style holds up better than VII's, and its gameplay mechanics definitely beat VIII's. Final Fantasy VI remains as crisp as ever, and its soundtrack is also one of the best in t?he series.

12. Portal

You either love or loathe puzzle games, a challenge that the people at Valve triumphed over very easily by making a puzzle game that's both fun and funny.

Underneath a simple level structure, Portal hides layers and layers of some of the best gaming mechanics and overall writing I've ever seen in a game. Oh, and yeah, there's always the fact that the Portal ??mechanics themselves were never before seen almost wizardry-type stuff back when it came out and still remain puzzling to this day.

Play it now, play it ten years from now. Portal will never get old.

11. Titanfall 2

Please don't let Titanfall 2's supposed emphasis on multiplayer fool you. As far as I'm concerned, that's all just extra fluff that pulls ??you away from one of the best campaigns of all time.

Despite being rather short, there's no wasted time here. Those five or so hours will have players finding one awesome new mechanic p?er level, enjoying some of the best setpieces in the history of gaming, and, perhaps, crying because?? of a robot.

10. Sid Meier's Civilization IV

Though the series was only about midway into its journey back in '05, I'd argue that Civilization 4 was likely its highest point yet.

Even if I'm wrong, I can at least hope you'll forgive me for snubbing your favorite game in the series. That's bec??ause all games in the series are responsible for the "just one more turn" curse that has destroyed so many of my nights I would've otherwise spent sleeping. Oh, and because doesn't go absolutely Nuke-crazy on t??his one.

9. Hades

If you're looking for the perfect balance between fun and challenging gameplay, then Hades is the game for you. Hades is trial and error perfected. It a??lso features a beautiful art style, fun dialogue, superb gameplay, and gor?geous animations, if that helps.

Even the people who were already used to the marvelous games by Supergiant were surprised by the quality of this one, so it's quite a blast to start this one if you've never touched the team's other bangers like Transistor or Bastion.

8. Stardew Valley

Paraphrasing philosopher Henry David Thoreau, it's fine to leave the city and any current measure of success to just take it to the countryside to chill and stuff. Stardew Valley would be the video game version of that quote, if not for the fact that its sole developer ended up cre?ating one of the most successful games of all time.

It's a curse he deserves, though, a?s this immersive farm life sim can truly steal you away fr?om your life and you'll feel all the better for it.

7. Bloodborne

All Bloodborne required for success was to be Dark Souls but faster. But FromSoft didn't set out to "merely" succeed with Bloodborne. The company completely revamped the Souls genr??e for action addicts and created the most? lusciously engrossing world in the series.

You could call Bloodborne "Lovecraftian", but it just adds so much more to the table that even calling?? it the best Lovecraft-inspired creation in history feels demeaning.

Red Dead Redemption port adds 60 FPS for PS5 John Marston

6. Red Dead Redemption

I love Red Dead Redemption 2, but the simple fact that its entire plot cares more about setting up the events of the original than it does about creating a satisfying stand-alone series should leave no do?ubt over which one has the better plot.

The development of Red Dead Redemption varied from completely bonkers to nightmarish, but the resu??lt is, in my opinion, the most personal and personally fulfilling work in Rockstar's?? catalog.

5. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

Though its combat mechanics feel a little lackluster when compared to the games of today, I’d argue it’s still much more fun and immersive than Oblivion and Skyrim.

The thirst for adventure, discovery, and treasure hunting that I got from Morrowind has yet to be surpassed by a Bethesda game or by any other company and I fear Morrowind will never be beaten in that regard.

4. Grim Fandango (Remastered)

Over 25 years since its initial release and its massive commercial flop, Grim Fandango remains the funniest game I’ve ever played and the best classic adventure game in history??.

It's just a miracle that the good people at Lucasarts managed to come up with an adventure game that only fe?atures one or two awful puzzles that make no sense. While I wouldn’t recommend the original version nowadays, the remaster is ace.

3. Half-Life 2

Even though Half-Life is the one that got it started, I maintain that Half-Life 2 is the one that perfected it. By "it", I'm talking about this concept that I've made up called the "Immersive FPS", a very exclusive game genre that pretty much just features the games in the Half-Life series.

Even though it might not look as technically impressive as the more recent FPS games of nowadays, you'd be hard-pressed to find a game that immerses you so well simply via its beautifully well-realized world and its writing. Much like Portal, I believe that Half-Life 2 is one of those games that will? never age a day but you will, so think abo??ut getting to it.

Completing tears of the kingdom without touching the surface

2. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

I thought about Ocarina of Time, about Majora's Mask, and I even thought about A Link To The Past. Then I mulled over, "Yeah, but which Zelda game would I recommend to a kid of today that I didn't want to strike as completely stuck in the past?" Well, the answer would be Breath of The Wild, so I picked Tears of The Kingdom because it's Breath of the Wild but better.

You can complain that it just reuses a large portion of the area from the original Zelda game for the Switch, but, well, I really like that g??ame, so that actually feels like some sort of retro?? compatibility, which I also love.

In all seriousness, though, I do feel like Tears of the Kingdom shows Nintendo at its most ingenious, and that's saying a lot about the video game com??pany t??hat built its brand on ingenuity.

elden ring 20 million sales fromsoftware

1. Elden Ring

Even though it's only two years old, you already know damn well that no one who has played it will ever forget Elden Ring. The only reason why I'm not saying that this is the culminat??ion of everything FromSoft has been working on for the past decade is that I just know that those mad people will manage to come up with something even better next. Still, this is absolutely the most fulfill??ing single-player experience you can have right now.

... And, even with everything I've just said, I'm cool if you hate me for not having Dark Souls occu???pying this spot. I kind of hate me for that as well.

The power of music

Square Enix's premier RPG series is known for its grand story, epic battles, and outstanding graphics, but it is also known for its Final Fantasy battle themes. Across its 36-year span, the Final Fantasy series has enlisted many talented musi?cians, including Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shimom??ura, and Masashi Hamauzu.

From Final Fantasy XIII's "Blinded by Light" to the original battle theme from the first FF, here are the best Final Fantasy battle themes, ranked. Let us know your favo??rites in the comments below.

10. Final Fantasy VI - "Decisive Battle"

//youtu.be/WmBPTpvYyIY

This upbeat Final Fantasy battle theme? ups the stakes with its frenetic tun??????????????????????????e and intense drumline that keeps your heart racing. A great battle theme keeps you energized and "Decisive Battle" certainly does that. Something about the nostalgic 16-bit tone also adds so much that's lost within modern remakes of this track.

9. Final Fantasy XIV - "Torn from the Heavens"

//youtube.com/watch???v=lWtVj3OnCPc&si=EnSIkaI??ECMiOmarE

Final Fantasy XIV is known for its epic themes whenever a big battle occurs, and "Torn from the Heavens" is certainly one of those. The callback to the main theme of the series alongside its gorgeous percussion and choir makes this an unforgettable track. The stakes are raised whenever "Torn from the Heavens" is played in this grand MMORPG.

8. Final Fantasy I - "Battle Theme"

//youtu.be/uddFta0D7FY

All great series have their beginnings, and Final Fantasy I made an impression from the very start. The melody is as intense as it can get on an 8-bit system, and the flow of the piece is sublime. You'll hear how great this composition is if you check out World of Final Fantasy's interpretation of the track. It truly gives the original piece justice with a? rocky interpretation and a lovely strings throughline.

7. Final Fantasy X - "Battle Theme"

//youtu.be/aZzQLHdMkQc

With a game that's as long as Final Fantasy X, you'll want to make sure the standard battle theme is a banger. Thankfully, it is. Tidus' journey is complemented by a track with a tasty bassl??ine, an exciting clash of drums, and a riveting melody that will keep you focused on the fight. What also helps with a battle theme such as this is the unpredictable nature of the track. It keeps surprising us with alterations to the song, and for the first ten times of listening to it, you'll notice a new twist on the main melody.

6. Final Fantasy V - "Clash on the Big Bridge"

//youtu.be/1a8OirsKVbc

"Clash on the Big Bridge" used the SNES sound font to the absolute max. This battle theme has an impressive melody, a wonderful drumline, and will catch you off-guard with how fast it is. It's a blast to play on Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. The otherworldly playin?g of the introduction is also striking and catches your attention.

5. Final Fantasy XV - "Stand Your Ground"

//youtu.be/GqDeit4elR8

Yoko Shimomura is known for her work on the Kingdom Hearts and Street Fighter series but she brought her A-game to Final Fantasy XV.  The battle theme "Stand Your Ground" starts the track with an epic sweep of the strings section and doesn't let you go until the very end. It then gets followed by a glorious reference to the main Final Fantasy theme, just like "Torn from the Heavens." After that, the action gets elevated by a rambunctious array of the orchestra with the blissful ?woodwind matched with the thunderous percussion.

4. Final Fantasy VII - "J-E-N-O-V-A."

//youtu.be/G8eCJCcBelo

Whenever you hear that high-pitched synthesized intro from "J-E-N-O-V-A," you know you're in for a good time. The melody is pleasing, the drum beat elevates the action, and the bassline is a grand accompaniment to the whole piece. It's a track that sounds mysterious as Cloud and his friends are unsure o?f what li?es ahead of them. Music should help set the scene, and "J-E-N-O-V-A." does that perfectly.

3. Final Fantasy XIII - "Blinded by Light"

//youtu.be/WyTRg-DJ99M

Final Fantasy XIII is arguably the most controversial game in the series, but you can't deny how awesome the soundtrack is. "Blinded by Light" is one of the best Final Fantasy battle themes because it consistently engages the player with its striking melody and ability to let every instrument in the piece shine. The guitar in the background gives it a hard edge, and the heavy use of the emotive strings section makes this theme song epic, but beautiful at t?he same time.

2. Final Fantasy VII - "One-Winged Angel"

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNms5rOaGlk

When "One-Winged Angel" plays, fear strikes the heart of every Final Fantasy VII fan. The dread-filled drums, the terrifying cluster of brass, and bewildered strings section all set the scene for the evil Sephiroth. Then there's a badass guitar throughline and the deep choir that adds to the drama of the piece. Each fight with Sephiroth is meaningful, and "One-Winged Angel" makes it next level. While the Advent Children version isn't technically from a game, it is the best version; it's in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The PS1 and Remake editions of the track also deserve praise?, ho??wever.

1. Final Fantasy VII Remake - "Let the Battles Begin!"

//youtu.be/zRHiTjce9s0

A great Final Fantasy battle theme is able to establish the danger present for your characters and motivate the player to carry on forward with the fight at hand. "Let the Battles Begin!" from Final Fantasy VII Remake successfully establishes that. The mixture of the powerful brass, thunderous drums, and emotive strings all make for a piece that truly stands out in the Final Fantasy series. Listen to it and you'll get hyped for anything: a run, pumping weights, or going to your dreaded dental appointment. "Let the Battles Begin" is a perfect battle theme, through and through, and Final Fantasy VII Remake just takes it one step further.

The last of the Pixel Remasters is taking some extra time

Five of the six Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters have launched. And for the last one, Square Enix is confirming it needs a little more time. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will launch in February 2022.

Square Enix says that in order to bring the "best experience possible," they're allowing the extra necessary time to apply final polish while finishing up the sixth Pixel Remaster. With five Final Fantasies down, Final Fantasy VI remains the final Pixel Remaster to launch, and likely one of the most anticipated given the original's place ??on so many best-of lists.

There are some extras coming too, though. New items are being added to the Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remast?er for those who pre-purchase it or pick up the b??undle. These include some Timelapse remixes of songs like "Terra's Theme" and some special wallpapers.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=5evm8hjmt8Y

The Pixel Remasters have received a mixed reception, largely due to the font used in them. Though fixes and even a patch have been implemented, your mileage will vary; but hey, they're also on PC, so mods a?re always an option.

As for the games themselves, well, the Final Fantasy VI is one of the big ones. Though there have been other ways to play it in the past, from console ports to its SNES Classic appearance, Final Fantasy VI is often heralded as one of the best in the ?series. And with the Steam Deck looming on the horizon, having a faithful pixel version playable on the go certainly has its appeal.

Hopefully we'll have a firm launch date soon, as the month of February is looking pretty dang crowded at this point. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will be launching in the same month as Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring, Sifu, Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion, and more.

The holidays are the perfect time to revisit the classics

It might surprise you to hear, but there are a lot of video games. Like, all the time. Just dozens of them. And not only this year too, but many other years?, even before yours truly was born??. Over the years, there are plenty of games, both niche interests and lionized classics, that I have just never got around to.

Last year, I started a new tradition for myself. During the holiday break, I would pick one classic game and finally play it. Last year, I chose Super Metroid. I missed it the first time around because, well, I didn't really have regular access to a Super Nintendo growing up. And even then, I didn't know anyone who was a big Metroid fan.

It wasn't until Metroid Prime, years and years later, that I'd be introduced to the series. And even longer until I'd sit down on one cold winter's?? evening, boot up Nintendo Switch Online, and set a course for the planet Zebes. And ultimately, I got to see why it's such a classic, and how it holds up even now.

So, this year, I'm already making plans on what I'll be playing for the holidays. I'm a little torn, and so selfishly, part of this blog is asking for advice. On one hand I'm looking at hitting some of the classic Final Fantasy games that had passed me by, specifically Final Fantasy VI.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2wXLCIpFRg

On the other hand, though, I'm intrigued to finally see firsthand what Planescape: Torment is all about. It's constantly referred to as a pillar of the genre, especially for those who—like myself—like the storytelling and dialogue parts of their RPG. Since I've fallen in deep with Baldur's Gate 3, the desire to play Planescape has grown even more.

It's odd, sometimes. I think for a while I felt a li?ttle ashamed because, whether for my age or just never having them available, I missed out on some classics. There was a piece of the gaming library that I had knowledge of, sure, but never firsthand experience.

But with my holiday classics, I realized it was a little gift I could look forward to every year. I'd get to set aside some time and see these games for the first time, with the fresh eyes I wish I could have for some of my own favorites. Sure, I had missed some ??classic video games the first time around. But?? getting to treat myself to a classic marathon years later has been its own reward.

So are there any classic video games that h??ave slipped you by? Any plans to use the holidays, or maybe just some weekends in the coming weeks and months, to finally check them out??????????????????????????? Let us know down below.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is Final Fantasy VI, otherwise known as the best Final Fantasy, i?s now available on Steam. The bad news is it's a port of the hideous?? mobile version.

As for while the mobile versions of classic Final Fantasy games look so terrible, developers Bill Stiernberg (Cosmic Star Heroine) and Lars Doucet (Defender’s Quest) have explored this subject in great detail, mostly finding fault with inconsistent ar??t that renders the ?whole thing a clashy mess.

You can find nicer-looking iterations on PlayStation Networ??k and Nintendo's Virtual Console, but if you're dead set on playing this on PC (and you're anti-emu?lation), this is option that exists.

Likely another $16

Final Fantasy VI is coming to PC, but it's the mobile port with the new art I hate (and some people don't! That's fine!) so Final Fantasy VI GBA port it remains, for me.

The latest port was telegraphed last month and supported by its appearance among all those leaked Steam releases. Now it's got a proper page on Steam and a December 16 release date. The mobile version goes for $16 and so does Final Fantasy V on Steam, so expect to pay that.

Probably the ugly mobile port

Final Fantasy VI is on its way to PC, a new PEGI rating suggests.

While Square Enix has not made any official announcements regarding the matter, the publisher has re-released a number of classic Final Fantasy games on the platform recently.

If precedent if followed, this is likely an enhanced version of the mobile port, rather than the original game or a full-blown remake, as we've seen with the PC editions of Final Fantasy IIIIV, and V.

Square initially released the role-playing game on SNES in 1994, and has since brought the title to PlayStation, Game Boy Advance,  and various digital storefronts. In 2013, Square Enix released an unnecessary remake of sorts for iOS devices (which cam??e to Android the following year).

The mobile version is currently available for half-off ($7.99 down from $15.99) via Google Play.

Art style still questionable

Just a heads up, everyone; Final Fantasy VI, which was recently ported to Android, is now available on iOS devices from the App Store for $15.99.

The android version of Square Enix's RPG launched nearly a month ago, and received criticism from fans regarding its art style -- this, coupled with several issues including a game-breaking bug, didn't really help much.

Anyone planning on getting this despite all that?

Also, a questionable art style

The Final Fantasy VI Android port launched merely a week ago, but players seem to have already encountered a rather?? troublesome glitch, leaving those affected unable to? progress.

As of right now, Final Fantasy VI will crash for a large numbe?r of those who make it to the cutscene showing the fight between Kefka and General Leo -- which is more or less ??halfway through the game. Because of this, it's practically impossible to continue on playing.

Over on Google Play, Square Enix has confirmed that they are now aware of this issue and that fixes "are forthcoming." They'll also be correcting that bloody "Esper" typo along with a fix t?o correctly disp??lay the icon for Sabin's Blitz ability.

Anyone who's bought this game? been experiencing any issues? From what I've been told this port could use a general stability update.

It's $15.99 now on Google Play

Take a gander at the above header. Look familiar? That's Final Fantasy VI on mobile devices, and to say it looks interesting is an understatement.

Somehow Square Enix has managed to take the beautiful SNES original and make it look like a flash game, and is selling it for $15.99 on Google Play. This new port evidently has more than "reworked" visuals as well, touting features like touch screen prompts for moves like Sabin's Blitz abilities. To make matters worse, it appears as if there's a typo [??Esper is correc??t] in the game's intro sequence.

I'm generally pretty positive when it comes to the Final Fantasy series as of late. XV looks interesting. I'm anticipating Lightning Returns. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is one of the best MMOs on the market right now. But t??hen something like this happens, and it just makes me upset, folks.

Original music in the style of 16-bit boss battles

Retro game inspired music speaks to me (as I'm sure it does for many of you), and while I do enjoy a good remix/remake/remaster here and there, a lot of my favorite pieces are original compositions. Electronic music creator Mark Reichwein appears to agree, and he is putting together an entire album done? in the style of Super Nintendo boss battle themes.

Reichwein stresses that these are not to be remakes of the music from twenty years ago, but original pieces done in the style of various '90s era games, using the sounds from those games. He already has tracks based from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI completed, and is seeking funding for the rest of the album. Naturally, I'm most looking forward to what he can do with the sounds of EarthBound.

The album is planned to have at least seven tracks on it, but depending on how much money the Kickstarter campaign raises, it could increase to up to twelve tracks. Inte??restingly, for the bonus tracks, backers will get a vote on which game he ??will emulate for the final product. Neat.

A Final Fantasy VII re-release of some kind could appear in the future

Final Fantasy VI, arguably the series' zenith, hasn't been milked and re-released to the same extent as other titles in the franchise. Even the harder to obtain Final Fantasy V has come to iOS. Well, no more, says Square Enix, because an updated version of Final Fantasy VI is coming to iOS and Android this winter, Square director and producer Takashi Tokita told Kotaku today.

"It is basically like a remake of the original VI," Tokita said, "But there have been some enhancements. The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle system?s have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."

The visuals will also see a smoothing out like the somewhat uncanny-looking Final Fantasy V iOS. Speaking of doing things with legacy titles, when asked if the Legacy series could include games from VII on, Tokita responded, "We are aware that we have tons of VII fans. We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy pro??ject works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

C'mon! Do the Final Fantasy Victory Dance, complete with fist pumps, as role-playing classic Final Fantasy VI is available on the PlayStation Network today. One of the finest videogames ever made is now ready for play on your PSP ??or PS3 for the?? price of $9.99.

This is the Final Fantasy Anthology version, which we first saw in 1999. I was happy to get it then, and I'm just as happy to see it again now. This game blew my freaking mind when it first came out, and it still holds up really well today. World-class operas, creepy ghost trains, sky-shaking summons, steampunk mechs,?? Moogles and the amazing Kefka. What a killer game.

Speaking of the "Victory Fanfare," I love how the Final Fantasy VI version is disco themed. If you want to fist pump along, there's a ??15-minute (!) loop after the jump.

The Final Fantasy port train keeps a-rollin'!

Square Enix has good news for PS3 and Wii owners who, for some ludicrous reason, have yet to play Final Fantasy VI. First up, the FMV-loaded PlayStation update will be arriving on Japan's Game Archives this Wednesday?. Given the ease with which one can create a Japanese PSN account, international folk who want a piece of this action shouldn't be discouraged.

Of course, if you want your game in English, head on over to the Virtual Console. Both Japan and PAL territories have already gotten their FFVI on, and now it's time for US fans to get a little somethin' somethin'. Naturally, this will be the Final Fantasy III-lab??eled version as it appeared on the SNES, but I doubt nostalgia buffs will be splitting hairs over that. There's no announced date, but we shouldn't have to wait too long.

Show of hands: who has yet to play this game?
