If you're a fan of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis (which, according to SteamCharts, is about 2000 of you), then you're getting to start the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth hype train a little earlier than most.

That's because Ever Crisis has kicked off a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth crossover event, which will let players experience aspects of the game in the unique mechanical style of Ever Crisis.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis x Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Crossover Event Details

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth crossover event runs from February 16 to March 3. In the event, players will take on the roles of Cloud and Sephiroth in Mt. Nibel using footage from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

In addition, there are some unique rewards players can get, as announced by Square Enix:

Originally released in 2023, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is an RPG that retells the entirety of Compilation of Final Fantasy VII in a chapter-based structure. In an era of gaming becoming more and more defined by hardware and availability limitations, it's the only place players can easily experience some aspects of Compilation, such as the PS2-era shooter Dirge of Cerberus and the delisted mobile game Before Crisis.

In the grand scheme of the FF7 media juggernaut, Ever Crisis feels like a mostly forgotten monstrosity, thanks to middling reviews (we gave it a 4) and a launch that was restricted to Android & iOS for the first three months.

Our very own Timothy "The Wordsmith" Monbleau wrote about his feelings on Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis when it was released on mobile devices a couple of months ago. I've also had the chance to play quite a bit of it—well, completed all the original content in the title, at least—and can say everything he mentions is pretty on point. Even though the idea of more FF7 is always appealing...this isn't the way to do it. FF7:EC feels like a gacha game was developed and then a FF7 skin was thrown onto it.

However, I know even with the warning, some people just want more Final Fantasy. Even though you could previously access Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis through emulators like BlueStacks, this will be the first time it's easily and officially available on PC. New players who jump in on the Steam version will also get the pre-order rewards that were available on mobile. The rewar??ds will help you get a jump start on progressing through the early missions, so it's a cool touch that they are giving the rewards to PC players as well.

There's no release date yet for when Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will ??actually go live on Steam. According to the Twitter post, the release date will be announced soon.

In a year of critically acclaimed games, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is certifiably a mobile title that came out. Billed as “another possibility for a remake,�Square Enix hyped up the game's PSX Final Fantasy nostalgia while kind of hiding the fact that it was, in fact, just a gacha game. For presumably that reason, many Final Fantasy fans vocalized their wish to see Ever Crisis on PC and consoles, and it looks like they’ll ??get ??some of what they asked for.

Square Enix announced via social media that a Steam version of Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is in development. While details are sparse, we do have confirmation that data will transfer between mobile and PC versions of the game. Otherwise, we don’t have much to go off of here. Square Enix hosted a live stream that sh??owed a shot of Cloud and Aerith on a PC screen (pictured above), which is something, I suppose.

Don’t make me cry, sis

Honestly, seeing this news this morning filled me with such deep confusion. There are free-to-play mobile games where a PC/console port makes sense, like Another Eden. However, as someone reviewed this thing, I can say Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis does not fit that environment. It is a title that, at best, works as something you kind of pay attention to wh??ile you kill time. Outside of incredibly specific niches, like someone who livestreams the game, I don’t know who this PC port is for.

I do understand that, leading up to release, many fans wanted this one absolved of mobile exclusivity. But that was also when many believed this was more of a straightforward remake and not just a gacha game. It’s certainly not a title that benefits from busting out ??a controller, I’ll say that much.

Admittedly, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is an easy game to clown on. Even outside of gacha or pay-to-win arguments, competing games like Honkai: Star Rail are just wholesale better. However, it isn’t enough of a disaster-piece to be interesting for that reason, either. Making a weird, convoluted, auto-play MMORPG out of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim? Now there’s a mess. Ever Crisis just feels like something that will live and die with less fanfare than its fallen brethren like Mobius Final Fantasy.

Anyway, I digress. For those who enjoy Ever Crisis and still want that PC port, I hope this version of the game sates you. No release window has been ??revealed at this time.

It is an undeniable fact that almost all games are, to some extent, commercial products. If we were not willing to spend our money on video games, then companies would not make them. With all-time classic titles like Final Fantasy 7, I often don’t think about this. Instead, I’m so swept up in the story, music, and gameplay that I forget about the cash I spent. It’s only when games like Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis come along that I remember ??that the eternal wheel of capitalism lurks behind even my most precious gaming memories.

Look, I’m not above the experience that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis offers. In my review-in-progress, I explained my robust experience with gacha games. Because lest you forget, Ever Crisis really is just a gacha game. It goes through the same motions as any title i??n this space does, and its gameplay mostly devolves into consuming Stamina and watching numbers go up. In my spicy opinion, games like this can still be fun. As long as there’s a substantive core dr??iving the experience, I can enjoy incremental grinds like these.

Well, I speak to you now as someone who has spent roughly 27 hours in Ever Crisis. I’ve cleared the main story, seen all its modes, and?? raised my team’s power level to roughly 60,000. Admittedly, this is only about a third of the?? way towards challenging the hardest content available in the game. But even if there’s an amazing experience hiding here, I’ve played enough to say that the Mako just ain’t worth the squeeze.

The First Soldier, the second time

I'm going to gloss over the basics of Ever Crisis, as I covered that in my review-in-progress. In that article, I discussed how Ever Crisis smashes Final Fantasy 7 with the “Compilation ofâ€?stories together in a frankly incohesive way. However, I didn't really cover The First Solider content, which functionally serves as Ever Crisisâ€?“originalâ€?story. Unfortunately, I ca?nâ€??™t say this did much for me.

For the most part, it revolves around introducing us to the new characters Glenn, Matt, and Lucia. It makes sense for this arc to take this angle, since it presumably lays the foundation for future updates. I just never found myself invested in this party or their mission. It adds some supplemental lore, sure, but I didn't find it interesting either in the scope of Final Fantasy 7 or on its own. It's ??not that it was terrible, ??it was just kind of boring.

It's only at the end of The First Soldier that we finally get to see young Sephiroth, who Square Enix teased prior to launch. However, without spoiling too much, I?’ll say that clearly any intriguing content here is still being withheld. The game's launch tease??r trailer states “we still don’t know Sephiroth,�and that remains true for me after playing.

Fortunately, Ever Crisis does let you choose which story to progress past a certain point. However, this winds up revealing just how little story content there is. The Final Fantasy 7 arc currently ends after Midgar, which I guess lines up with what assets the game could use from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Meanwhile, Crisis Core ends after the first Ifrit fight. Stuff like Dirge of Cerberus or Advent Children has no representation in the game so far, despite appearing in the game's debut trailer.

Systems of a Phoenix Down

As far as the actual play experience, I noted in my review-in-progress that I've kept auto battle on since it was unlocked. That never changed, though Ever Crisis does try to add depth in very small ways.

The crunchiest option here is the Criterion Dungeons, which task you with repeating the game's occasional dungeons with boss fights that escalate in challenge. This does introduce very, very lite roguelite-style mechanics where you can select certain stat buffs after each fight. However, these are ridiculously basic, like choosing whether to boost physical or magical attack. Many gacha games have experimented with these types of mechanics, and Ever Crisis doesn't compete in any meaningful way here. To their credit, Criterion Dungeons do try to incorporate some item management. But I found this offered nothing more than "heal between battles and use buff items before ??the final boss."

The other substantive option, which I imagine has the most strategic depth, is co-op. As of writing, teams can link up to take down three different bosses at several different difficulty levels, with a limited-time event boss also joining the mix as of writing. Given the way the battle system works, you could theoretically coordinate some neat strategies here. In single player, you must automate two party members even with manual play turned on. Co-op technically lays the foundation to?? let players work together as dedica??ted attackers, healers, stat buffers, etc.

However, in practice, co-op quickly become just another thing to use auto battle on. My Cloud would join two identical Clouds to take down baddies, and given that we all changed ou??????????????????????????r attack stances at identical times, I assume that everyone else was just auto-farming too. There could be a worthwhile experience at the top level, I’m just not seeing it now.

I am not a Materia girl

As far as progression itself, it really does stay firmly in that “grind for grinding sake�mentality. More upgrade systems unlock as you progress, but they all boil down to the same loop. Identify what you should upgrade, spot the resource you need, and then ??run the appropriate stage until you're done. Sure, it’s neat that characters earn mild skill trees to climb. But these systems don't mix up the game??play in any meaningful way.

The one exception, however, is the Materia system. And unfortunately, I don't mean that in a good way. Materia is essential, since it’s the easiest way to slap the elemental coverage on your team without performing more gacha pulls. However, crafting Materia takes real-world time, and you can only craft up to five at once. Additionally, each Materia is treated like a unique item, since they all wind up with randomized sta?ts and rarity levels. In other words, it's a gacha inside your gacha.

None of this is bad on paper, but treating each Materia as its own uni??que item quickly becomes a UI nightmare. If I just want to figure out which Materia I should optimally craft, I have to do a ridiculous amount of cross-referencing. Do I have enough of this element for my team to equip? Which type of Materia could use a better variant? How much time am I willing to spend chasing a few extra stats?

Additionally, strengthening Materia requires sacrificing your spare pieces as level-up materials. I can see the logic here, since y??ou’re rolling the dice on Materia over and over again to find on??es with good stats anyway. However, again, this requires micromanaging to make sure you aren’t chucking Materia you might need by accident. None of this is impossible, but it’s just so tedious to repeat this process ever few hours that I stopped trying to optimize it.

Rain in the desert

Now, credit where credit’s due, if there’s one thing I do genuinely like about Ever Crisis, it’s the character stories.

These unlock quite a ways into the game, and I assume they’re linked to your characters' levels. I only really used Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith, and those were the stories I had the option to experience. These are, no joke, quite good! They fill in implied gaps in Final Fantasy 7’s main story that are fun to see, even if they're kind of unnecessary. For example, Cloud’s story details his reconnecting with Tifa and explaining how, exactly, he became involved with Avalanche. The writing and cutscenes feel authentic to the original game, as if they were long-lost dele??ted scenes.

It's not just the character stories either. Even the silly beach event that went live as I type this features some decently charming writing with the Final Fantasy 7 cast. It’s 100% filler content, but I like seeing the game have fun with its cast and put them in whimsical situations. Honestly, if the game just wholly focused on original stories like these, it’d make a much stronger case for itself. I know that The First Soldier technically is trying to? do this, I just really don’t care about the charac??ters there like I do for the original cast.

Sadly, these bits are over way too quickly. You'll finish each tale in a handful of minutes, which pales in comparison to the hours of grinding you’d need to do to get there. I couldn’t even complete Tifa’s story, since it abruptly jumps from a recommended power level of 45,000 to 70,000 in one mission. It’s a bummer that FF7 fans wh??o just want to see content like this will hit walls like these. Especially if it c??auses them to pay to climb over those walls faster.

Draw a line in the Ruby Weapon’s sand

It’s tempting to look at Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis and say that because it’s a gacha, it's therefore garbage. I bet at least one person will look at the score below and say that I rated this too highly. However, I don’t think that’s necessarily fair. There is a market for these casual, long-term grinds, and Ever Crisis does meet that bare minimum. It looks and sounds great, generally runs well, and, occasionally, does deliver feelings of playing PSX Final Fantasy 7 again. I think Ever Crisis successfully accomplishes everything it sets out to do. It's just that the bar it wanted to clear is exceptionally low.

Outside the Final Fantasy 7 branding, there just isn't anything notable or remarkable here. For as much as I talked about just leaving the game on auto battle, I have no interest in meaningfully interacting with the core systems at this point. The menuing is so clunky that I don’t even want to build my team, which is typically the best part of gacha games. It’s somehow both too shallow to be interesting and too convoluted to be engaging, which is below par even by mobile game standards. In my review-in-progress, I compared gacha games to ordering a Big Mac. Ever Crisis is a Big Mac mad??e by a team who completely forgot to add any special sauce.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is just a gacha game. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, and it does offer adequate fanservice for those who love Cloud and friends. But otherwise, Ever Crisis doesn't do anything that other free mobile games already do better. Maybe it’s worth a download for bored Final Fantasy fans, but oth??erwise, you can spend both your time a?nd money better elsewhere.

By the time I spent about an hour with Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, I was hit with an overwhelming wave of familiarity. Not because of nostalgia for Final Fantasy 7, though I have fond memories of that game. Rather, it was because I have seen virtually this exact same ??game on mobile devices for the past seven years now.

Despite what Square Enix’s frankly confusing marketing might leave you to believe, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is just a gacha game. Calling it “another possibility for a remake�maybe isn’t untrue, but it's a bit misleading. Games like Genshin Impact or even Square Enix’s own Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent have really raised the bar for mobile games, so I don’t blame anyone for thinking Ever Crisis would be more than it is. But rather than reaching for those loftier heights of quality on the back of the Final Fantasy brand, Ever Crisis is a firmly complacent title. It is as g?acha as any gacha that you’ve ever played, and we need to establish that before we continue.

So in short, Ever Crisis is p?robably not the game that I imagine many hoped it would be. But what if we set all of that aside and just judge?d the game on its own merits? Does it, at the very least, function well as a simple time killer to put on your phone?

Well, now’s as good a time as any to reveal myse??lf as a gacha g??ame sicko to you all.

Reroll for initiative

My relationship with gacha games is much like my relationship with fast food. I’m never proud of having a Big Mac, but it is an itch I need to scratch here and there. During periods of my life when I had more time than money, I dipped into virtually every notable gacha game I saw just to see how meta I could make my account for free in each game. I’ve played everything from Dragalia Lost (RIP) to Arknights to Sdorica to Langrisser to BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! to�I think you get the picture.

Ever Crisis specifically comes to us via Applibot, whose bread and butter veers more towards the “put game on auto battle and watch numbers get bigger�brand of gacha games. Their most notable work nowadays is Square Enix’s NieR Reincarnation, which I did generally like. However, that one was carried by its writing and original story, which makes Ever Crisis an interesting case. Sure, jamming what appears to be the all of the “Compilation of Final Fantasy 7�into one game is an interesting hook. But Applibot is absolutely working within their usual wheelhouse here, which makes Ever Crisis feel as strange as it is unremarkable.

Learn the battle system, or not, it doesn’t matter

At first blush, I did think Applibot might do something different here. The tutorial sequence takes you through Final Fantasy 7’s iconic opening, because why wouldn’t it. You have free reign to move around and explore, plus the battle system initially appears to have some strategy. Players have to manage their ATB and select attacks that often need to count??er specific enemy mechanics. For example, boss monsters will occasionally put up shields that require certain elemental attacks to dispel.

Also, yo??u can switch between offensive and defensive stances so you can prepare for stronger attacks. I first thought this might set the stage for a combat system that could, theoretically, grow ??in complexity as the game progresses.

Then you see the main menu proper, where the game quickly turns into, again, a gacha. Those free-roaming dungeons become rarities as the game takes you through the same menu-based motions you’ve seen a thousand times. Select a stage, ??watch a cutscene, play a battle (typically involving three waves of enemies), collect rewards. Additionally, you soon unlock auto battle and X2 battle speed, both of which I have yet to turn off since. Combat is so basic that auto battle doesn’t ever do much that I wouldn’t normally do. It even stance dances perfectly and targets those enemy shields as long as you have the right elemental attacks.

The good news is that the game doesn’t use a Stamina system to progress through the story. The “bad�news is that it does use a Stamina system for all the supplemental stages you’ll need to run to strengthen your team. Character upgrade items, equipment upgrade items, items to increase level caps, it’s all here in full force. I put “bad�in quotation marks because I do prefer Stamina systems over the hours-long grinds that gacha games without them tend to devolve into. It’s still all dancing around a time-gated system, and I’m sure you know where your t??olerance lies when it come??s to that by now.

Final Fantasy 7 The Abridged Series

As for the story itself, I honestly dread the idea of anyone first experiencing Final Fantasy 7 like this. While the PlayStation-style graphics are charming, the structure of the game quickly devolves into Final Fantasy 7 Cliffs Notes. Sure, that intro stays faithful to the original. Then you meet Aerith on the street, get some text summaries, fight some bat?tles, and next thing you know you’re at Seventh Heaven talking to Tifa.

The entire game seems to focus mostly on the major scenes, letting all the in-between fall to the wayside. If you’re the type of person that’s still mad that Tom Bombadil wasn’t in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, you’ll have a rough time here.

Additionally, the way the game integrates the “Compilation of�content isn’t particularly coherent. As you’re progressing through the Final Fantasy 7 story, you’ll make your way to crashing down into Aerith’s garden in the church. You see Reno of the Turks chasing after you, and then�it’s Crisis Core time? I mean, I could understand the game shoot?ing over that way if they at least finished this immediate arc. It’d make sense to play as Zack after Aerith mentions him at the playground. But here?? it just cuts off any momentum the story had built up.

I’m less versed in Crisis Core and the rest of the Final Fantasy 7 extended universe, so I can’t specifically explain how those plots measure up compared to the originals. But overall, Ever Crisis seems more intent on giving Final Fantasy 7 fans some nostalgic feels than doing these stories justice. I think there’s a place for that kind of experience, but I don't think Ever Crisis quite pulls it off so far.

Let’s talk Gacha

Of course, I’m sure the big question here is just how bad the gacha is in Ever Crisis. It’s, well??, definitely a weapon gacha. Honestly, the way the game introduces its gacha is one of the most abrasive I’ve ever seen in a gacha game. And in ??this genre, that’s saying something.

When you’re introduced to the system, you’ll see a series of banners. There are the banners you can roll on with paid currency, which of course show up first. Then there’s the Featured banner, which introduces a lot of rules. Here’s where you roll on weapons for your protagonists to use, but only by doing 10-pulls can you collect stamps. Every 10-pull can grant anywhere from 1-12 stamps, which fills out your Stamp card. Collect 12 stamps, and you can earn a speci?fic costume.

This is the only way you can earn costumes, which do not appear in the gacha and do increase stats. However, this isn’t to be confused with getting weapons from the stamp card, which just guarantees a certain weapon will appear in?? your pull and isn’t an actual bonus. Also, don't mix this up with Ticket pulls, which operate on a different banner and?? don’t grant stamps. So actually it doesn’t matter if you 10-pull or not here, just make sure you know what ticket you’re actually using, because there are several different ones (including many that cost real money). Still with me?

I understand all of this now, but getting there was a journey. Generally speaking, if I need to study a monetization system like I’m deep in a Wiki learning how to play a Souls game, it’s probably too complicated. There’s also an element of FOMO to this too, since stamp cards expi??re with no indication that your stamps will carry over afterwards. Many gacha games feature “pity�systems that work like this, but few lock unique items like costumes to them. I have zero doubt this exists to get you to spend ??more so you don’t miss out on that cool Cloud outfit you’re so close to getting.

Grind it out

Having said that, even though the game coaxes you to spend money, I’ve done just fine as a free player. As mentioned above, I’ve kept the game on auto battle and have progressed easily. I have to press my Limit Break b?uttons so they're timed properly, but t??hat’s it. If you’re stuck, you just have to identify which resource you need to strengthen your character or weapon and go to the right stage to farm it. This will eat your Stamina, but the game gives Stamina restoration items out like candy. I’m literally farming things as I type this.

Ever Crisis automates so much for players that the only strategy really comes from identifying what you need to grind. Hitting the “recommended party�button does all your team building for you, right down to outfitting your party with the elemental coverage you need. And for the most part, the story content has been a cakewalk. I’ll need to see how the later stages of the game play out, but you certainly don’t need to pay-to-win. Don’t get me wrong, you absolutely can pay-to-win, I ?just haven't hit a wall that mandates it. Someone who just wants to see the story ??should get through fine for free.

I will say that, for a game that almost completely centers around its grind, it really needs to streamline its menuing. I often find myself tapping around for far too long just to, say, toss upgrade materials into a weapon. Even accessing your main grind stages requires more tapping and scrolling that most games of this variety require. I’m used to it now, but for a 2023 gacha bearing the Final Fantasy name, it feels outdated.

It ain’t all bad, I guess

It’s not like Ever Crisis completely lacks redeeming qualities. It obviously looks and sounds great, even if it does reuse several assets from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. And while the story takes many shortcuts, it is charming to see the extended Final Fantasy 7 world presented in that PlayStation-inspired graphical style. The cutscenes themselves don’t cut corners, even if the overall story does. It still looks downright quaint compared to, say, Genshin Impact, but the appeal is there.

Additionally, these more passive gacha games do kind of work. I mean, there’s a reason we see so many of them on mobile devices. It’s a primal “watch numbers go up and feel happy brain chemicals�kind of experience, similar to an idle game. For someone who wants that, Ever Crisis does the trick. It’s one for people who want to play something but also want to rewatch The Office for the seventh time.

However, the question for me becomes “why would I want to play Ever Crisis instead of other gacha games that do the exact same thing?�And honestly, aside from the Final Fantasy fan service, I’m struggling to find the answer. It’s a pretty game, and it’s the newest one on the block. But beyond that, I don't know what to tell you. Ever Crisis is another possibili??ty for a remake, but so far, I’m good with the one we already got.

I still want to give Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis a fair shake before declaring a verdict. While I’m a decent ways into the game, I haven’t seen how the game might evolve at the upper thresholds of its available content. In the vast world of Square Enix gacha games, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is undoubtedly one of them. The Final Fantasy VII mobile spinoff has attracted ample curiosity since its original announcement, given th?at it aims ??to functionally remake the original game alongside the �a href="//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compilation_of_Final_Fantasy_VII" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compilation of�titles. But with Ever Crisis�/em> latest trailer, Square Enix reminds us that the upcoming RPG will add some new lore ?too.

The big feature here is CG footage of an undoubtedly boyish-looking Sephiroth. With the text “We still don’t know Sephiroth�flashing on the screen, it appears we might see a more heroic side of the iconic Final Fantasy villain. Take a look for yourself.

The crisis of playing Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis comes at an interesting time in the mobile game market. Ever since MiHoYo blew everyone’s minds with Genshin Impact, the bar for free-to-play titles on the platform has exponentially increased. To Square Enix’s credit, they have put out some bangers since then. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a legitimately good RPG?, with a remarkable ?lack of FOMO by market standards.

On the other hand, Square Enix has also developed a reputation for axing titles the minute they stop becoming profitable. Final Fantasy VII: The First Solider went offline shortly after a year, and titles like Echoes of Mana and Final Fantasy Record Keeper have recently seen shutdowns. It’s on??e of those things that comes with the free-to-play territory, unfortunately.

As for Ever Crisis, our own Eric “Beefy Buster Sword�Van Allen tested it during Summer Games Fest 2023. It seems like there’s definitely something here for Final Fantasy VII fans, even if the combat looks basic. For my part, I’m worried that Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will just be “a gacha,�albeit with some sick fanservice and visuals. It’ll at least be worth a curious look, though. I know I always like to have a go-to game on my phone to pass the time while waiting for Dentist appointm?ents.

You can (not) re-do

The story of Final Fantasy VII has expanded well beyond the bounds of the original PlayStation RPG. Through the spin-offs and the remake, the world of FF7 has become expansive. But rather than continue to build up, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis f???eels like it's re-centering the lens on the original story, albeit with a few extra touches of its own.

Ever Crisis is a single-player mobile RPG that's billed as a bit of a retelling of Final Fantasy VII. It's a chapter-structured RPG that will go back over the events of the original game, alongside Crisis Core and some new story elements included from FF7 Remake writer Kazushige Nojima.

In the demo I played as part of Summer Game Fest 2023, I went through the classic intro to FF7. I got to see how exactly this plays out, and where Ever Crisis adheres to—or differs from—its original text. It's an interesting way of re-experiencing this tale, for?? both newcomers and old fans alike?.

The planet's dyin', Cloud

If you've played Final Fantasy VII, either the original or the remake, you remember how the first mission goes. Cloud, Barrett, and the crew infiltrate the Mako Reactor, set up the explosives, fight a giant robot, and escape just in the nick of time. It's a great intro, and it still works in Ever Crisis.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is set to re-tell the original FF7 story, but that doesn't mean it isn't taking some bits from newer versions. The in-game portraits are gorgeous, adding a lot of character to the dialogue-heavy sections. And once you're in battle, the normally PlayStation-style sprites turn into Remake-style models.

It makes Ever Crisis feel like a compilation, which I guess is kind of the point. The world of not just Final Fantasy, but Final Fantasy VII specifically, is huge at this point. To that end, having a mobile RPG that lets you re-experience the original FF7 story i??n a slightly abridged format seems like a great way to onboard new players.

Cue the fanfare

As for the actual battling, it feels best summed ??up as solid, but nothing too involved or interesting. An ATB meter builds up over time, letting you execute commands that have different ATB costs noted along a bottom row.

In my demo, there was a tension between cashing in ATB for Braver or magic, or holding onto it in case I needed some quick healing. It's a decent system, but not very i?n-depth. Maybe more options open up as more characters are added and tougher enemies show up. But for these ?fights, it was pretty straightforward.

And that really leads into my greater questions about Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis. Pre-registration is currently open, and the plan is to roll out the original FF7 story. It will have in-app purchases, which appears to include gacha elements around weapons and costumes for characters.

Any monetization element can make players wary. I'm curious to see what this will look like, and how necessary those elements will feel in the final game. I recently got way into Honkai Star Rail a?t launch, for example, but fell off as ??the content roll-out started.

A history of Fantasy

Still, with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth set for early 2024 and rising interest in Final Fantasy in general, I like the idea of making the original FF7 easy to pick up and play. It's a core piece of this series' legacy, a??nd though it's already been ported to tons of platforms, this method just add??s a new way of experiencing—or re-experiencing—the story.

So Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis might feel like a re-tread, but a welcome one. What I've learned from the demo is that you really don't have to twist my arm to get me to play more Final Fantasy VII. And if you're in a similar boat, Ever Crisis might be worth at least a shot when it arrives for mobile.

Square Enix, having not learned much from the past, is apparently taking on the mobile market again with another Final Fantasy VII spin-off.  During today's Summer Game Fest presentation, we got a new update on Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, in development for iOS and Android platforms.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is something we've been looking forward to for a while -- initially announced last year, this new title will bring the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII timeline to mobile platforms as a single-player, episodic experience. Hello Crisis Core!

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most expan??sive game universes ever created. It covers games?? across multiple platforms, remakes, and movies. It can be hard to keep up with everything that's happened in it, but Square Enix is looking to change that.

Coming to iOS and Android, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will retell the entirety of the FFVII timeline as a single-player, episodic game. Just to be clear, this will relive the events of the original Final Fantasy VII and all of its compilation titles. That includes Advent Children, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, and Dirge of Cerberus.

Ever Crisis will also feature new story elements surrounding the founding of SOLDIER written by Kazushige Nojima, the story and scenario writer for Final Fantasy VII Remake. The game will launch in ??2022 as a free-to-play title with optional in-game purchases.
