The first ever savage-tier 24-player ‘Chaoticâ€?Alliance Raid is coming to Final Fantasy XIV on December 24, and this Christmas is going to be all about taking p?art to get sweet, sweet rewards.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait until then to figure out the specifics, such as unlock requirements, how to queue, or even how the reward system will work. All of this information was graciously given during the 83rd Live Letter from the Producers on November 1??. So, without further ado, let’s get ?into the details.

How to unlock The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)

The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) in Final Fantasy XIV

According to the information we’ve already been given, unlocking The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic?) won’t take much additional effort outside of completing t??he main story because it will become unlocked after you’ve completed the following quest:

  • Level 100 MSQ quest “Dawntrailâ€?/li>

When it’s unlocked, you’ll be able to queue ?via either the Raid Finder, which is accessed through the Duty Finder, or through Party Finder. As this is high-level and brutally punishing content designed f??or those who already participate in Savage or Ultimate duties, it will be on the same menu.

How many players are needed for The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)

The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot via FFXIV/YouTube

According to information given during the Live Letter, the first Chaotic Raid can technically be completed with as few as 12 players, provided those players are part of a preformed team. However, just because it can be completed with 12 players, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it should be completed with 12 players.

The duty difficulty is balanced and optimized for the full amount of 24 players, so rocking up with 12 players is likely to be something to strive for in the long run rather than something to try on day one. There ar?e definitely teams out there who could climb that mountain and come out victorious, but for the average player, it’s likely to be a huge challenge.

According to Yoshida (with translations provided by Iluna Minori on the FFXIV Discord Server), the Chaotic Raid sits somewhere between The Dragonsong’s Reprise and The Omega Protocol in terms of ?difficulty. Apparently, mechanics will be coming thick and fast, so players will need to adapt their speed and movement according?ly.

?With that in mind, the party composition for Chaotic raids will be ?identical to that seen in regular alliance raids. That means you’ll need three parties made up of the following roles:

  • 2 Tanks
  • 2 Healers
  • 4 DPS

Rewards for The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)

So far, we know that there will be a number o??f rewards up for grabs for completing The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic). While the specifics of some of them have not yet been revealed (minions and hairstyles), we do have some information about the mounts a??nd gear that will be dropped.

Firstly, the Chaotic Raid will reward a number of Tokens. These can then be traded for drops that are more on the rare side. However, everything that can be gained with Tokens will be avail??able as a drop when completing the duty.

iLvl 730 gear

While iLvl 730 gear is already available in FFXIV, it is locked behind the AAC Light-heavyweight Savage Raids. So even if this new gear isn’t a step up in terms of stats, it is nice to hav?e another source for max iLvl gear.

It’s also a solid alternative if you’re not a fan of the cur?rent max iLvl gear; there’s definitely a different look to the gear that will drop from the Chaotic, some of which can be seen above.

Tile mount

The exact name of this mount is not yet known, ??but it is ess??entially one of the tiles that appear during the Raid itself. For anyone who is familiar with a specific tile mechanic that has previously been used, this will give them some idea of one of the mechanics to expect from the Raid.

This mount also features an action that causes the player to panic before th?e mount disappears from beneath them.

Have you ever wanted to become the Cloud of Darkness? Well now you can with the Cloud of Darkness mount. Yoshida showed off how this mount looks with his Lalafell, and with just his head sticking out,? I can only imagine how this looks with a Roedagyn floating around inside.

How does the bonus reward system work in FFXIV?

The bonus system in The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot via FFXIV/YouTube

For the first time, there will be a bonus reward system that centers around ??the Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic). There will be two different types of bonuses, one of which is more reliable than ??the other.

First-time duty bonus

Just like when you run any dungeon or other duty in FFXIV, the new Chaotic Raid will featur??e a bonus that rewards additional Tokens if one or more players are new to the duty. Naturally, this means that if you’re diving in on the first day (December 24??), then you’ll get a hefty number of Tokens for your troubles.

Limited time bonus

The limited-time bonus is ??slightly more complicated, and if you’ve ever farmed for light during a Relic Weapon grind, then you’ll know what to expect. At certain times, a DC may?? have a limited-time bonus applied to The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic). This will be different for each DC, so you might want to think about getting to grips with the DC travel system.

During this limited-time bonus, the number of Tokens that drop will increase, and the drop rate of items will also increase. If your DC has t?his bonus applied on release day, then expect a lot of ??international visitors.

As part of the announcements at the end of the Live Letter on November 1, Final Fantasy XIV has revealed that it will once again collaborate with mobile game War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius to bring new items into both games.

Whereas previously, only War of the Visions benefitted from receiving Visions Cards of familiar FFXIV characters like Y’sh??tola, this time around, both games will receive items from each other.

As part of the collaboration event, which is scheduled to take place at some point during December, Final Fantasy XIV players will be able to get their hands on a couple of new glamour sets. Sadly, these won’t come from any kind of in-game event quest, but they will be available for all players on the FFXIV Online Store.

For who play as a male character, there will be the Mont (King of Leonis) set, complete with fur collar, red cape, and rather shiny boots. For those looking for something more feminine, the Machérie (??Queen of Hourne) set will be availab??le to purchase. The set features a white and red dress, which is quite similar to some previous White Mage artifact gear, and long boots.

It’s unknown as of yet how much these glamour sets will cost?, whether they’ll be gender-locked, or if they will be dyeable. If they follow the same pattern as previous character-specific sets, the likelihood of being able to change their colors is slim, but I choose to live in hope.

For players of the mobile game War of the Visions, some all-new Dawntrail Visions Cards will be available. The images shown are of Thancred and Y’shtola, who were available during the previous collaboration event, so it’s uncertain whether just the cards look different or if n??ew characters will be involved.

This event will begin in Japan on December 1 and run until December 23. For the rest of ?the world, it will kick off on January 7 and ?run until January 28.

It’s not very often that I get to make a joke that works on a literal level, but Final Fantasy XIV has given me the opportunity ?to say “go and touch gra??ssby teaming up with Logos to make a full set of camping gear.

This bizarre and unexpected, though not entirely unwelcome collaboration was announced at the very end of the 84th Live Letter on November 1, and it’s not the onl?y strange choice for a collaboration that was revealed, but more on that later.

Logos are a Japanese outdoor brand, but they do ship their products worldwide, meaning that the items included in this collaboration are available to all, for a price. Logos tents range in price from around $100 USD to around $3,000 USD, although the FFXIV-branded one is unlikely to reach those hefty sums. It looks to be a solo tent, perhaps? capable of fitting two peop?le, so around $100 USD is my best guesstimate.

Other things included in the collaboration seem to be a Coole??r, a couple of different camping chair designs, a foldable table, a variety of smaller camping utensils and too??ls, and a cart you can drag everything around in. I’m not saying it would make for the cheapest holiday, but at least you’d be camping in style.

Pre-orders for the collection will begin on Novem?ber 15.

Schwarzkopf x FFXIV hair dyes
Image via Square Enix

This wasn’t the only bizarre collaboration announced during the Live Letter. Final Fantasy XIV has also teamed up with Schwarzkopf to bring out a range of Eorzea-inspired hair dyes for Eu??ropean players. As someone who constantly fights the urge to dye my hair the next bright color, this is not helping my willpowe??r in the slightest.

Three colors were shown during the stream: deep red, pink, and green. I’ve had a lot of experience with Schwarzkopf Live hair colors, and the shades aren’t new additions. I’ve actually used all of them previously and can verify how good they are. However, the boxes do have characters from FFXIV on them, and all of them have had a slight redesign.

The hair dyes will ?be available in supermarkets, drug stores, and online retailers after the following dates, depending on your location:

January 2025:

  • United Kingdom
  • Denmark
  • Sweden
  • Republic of Ireland

February 2025:

  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Czech Republic
  • Slovakia
  • Hungary
  • Bulgaria
  • Romania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Serbia
  • Latvia

June 2025:

  • Slovenia
  • Croatia

September 2025:

For fans of Final Fantasy XIV, there’s good news from today’s Live Letter 84 the 7.1 C??rossroads patch will be released on November 12, and it brings a whole new ran?ge of content to dive into, as well as some much-needed updates.

As always, additional translations from today’s Live Letter are provided by Miuna over on the FFXIV Discord server

As the Live Letter did, let’s kick this off with? the latest trailer for patch 7.1:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb08eqW1QQo

Obviously one of the most awaited additions with Patch 7.1 is the continuation of the Dawntrail MSQ, which will continue until patch 7.3 according to Yoshida. The ongoing story will see us learn more about Sphene and Zoraal Ja, his son, and possibly the ide??ntity of?? his biological mother.

There will also be a new dungeon added as part of the MSQ Yuweyawata Field Station. Although not much was said about the dungeon itself, Yoshida said that it would be less challenging than the current Expert dungeons. However, they’ve done “something differentwith the last boss which may come as a surprise. Exactly what they've done re??mains to be seen, but this definitely sounds omi??nous, to say the least.

Coming in patch 7.1

Along with the additional MSQ quests, we’ll also have a lot of new content to dive into. Here’s everything that’s coming i??n 7.1, and what we know about it thanks to today’s Live Letter:

Echoes of Vana’deil: Jeuno - The First Walk

The Echoes of Vana'diel: Jeuno - The First Walk in Final Fantasy XIV

We were given some in-game glimpses of Echoes of Vana'diel: Jeuno - The First Walk during the Live Letter, including some sneak peeks of the first boss, Prishe of the Distant Chains. Armed with huge fists and some interesting new mechanics, she’ll defin?itely be a challenge to take down, at least to begin with.?

We were also told that while the area is an Alliance Raid Dungeon, it will also serve as an ?event map, so players will be able to explore and take in everything. This means that we’ll also be able to use the area for?? screenshots, which is definitely much appreciated because it looks stunning.

Gear rewards from Echoes of Vana'diel: Jeuno - The First Walk in Final Fantasy XIV

The gear drops from the dungeon are pleasingly black, although they can also be dyed quite nicely. Yoshida said that they worked closely with the FFXI team to decide which job got which gear.

As someone who never played Final Fantasy XI, it was reassuring to hear Yoshida say that while they were remaining true to the source, they also went out of their way to not leave players behind who aren’t so familiar with it. Another small detail that pays homage to FFXI is the fact that all enemy names will be displayed in English, even for Japanese players or others who use ??a non-English alphabet.

Hall of the Novice: Training

Updates to the Hall of the Novice in Final Fantasy XIV

We were shown a very in-depth demonstration of how the new Hall of the Novice: Training will work, and it comes with detailed descriptions of mechanics and the opportunity to take part in instanced battles to? put your knowledge to the test. This is incredibly useful for new players, and some old ones who might be a bit rusty.

PvP update

PvP updates in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot via FFXIV/YouTube

PvP will be undergoing something of an overhaul, with each job (except Pictomancer and Viper) losi??ng actions and gaining new ones. Effects have also been updated so that damage will be dealt w?hen the effect goes off, rather than when the attack is executed.

Crys??talline Conflict maps are also undergoing an update, with both Cloud Nine and Red Sands getting more clutter and objects. Yoshi did mention that this makes the paths more narrow, so obstacles and attacks may not be so easily avoided in the ?future.

P??vP Series 7 will also begin with the implementation of patch 7.1 as well, bringing new rewards on offer.

Other content

Pelupelu in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot via FFXIV/YouTube

For patch 7.1 itself, ther?e are also a couple of other things that will be added:

  • Pelupelu Allied Society Quests

    • Described as being “bright and straightforwardâ€?by Yoshida

  • The Minstrel’s Ballad: Sphene’s Burden

    • Will reward green, white and gold Wing Mount for your collection

  • The Jade Stoa (Unreal)
  • A new, final Pandaemonium quest

    • Yoshi stated that it “didn’t feel rightâ€?to add this as part of 7.0

  • Duty Support for non-MSQ dungeons
  • Doman Mahjong voiced reactions from the Scions

    • New voices will be purchased using at the Gold Saucer using MGP

  • Housing update

    • Allowing players to change the interior design of their property regardless of their location

Coming in further patches

Although the following things won’t be added as part of the main 7.1 patch, they will be added in smaller patches before 7.2. This does mean a lit?tle bit of a longer wait, but it also means we can spread out the experience and focus on one thing at a time. It's easy to get overwhelmed by content sometimes, so this is a good way to prevent that from happening.

Futures Rewritten (Ultimate)

Futures Rewritten (Ultimate) in Final Fantasy XIV

The Ultimate Raid for Dawntrail, featuring both Ryne and Gaia all over again, will be added in patch 7.11. Yoshida did mention that players might enjoy the Ultimate more if they give themselves a refresher of the?? Eden storyline, so if you’ve not played those raids through in a while, now might be a good time.

The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)

The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) will be the first savage level difficulty 24-player content ever introduced to FFXIV, and it will be arriving one week after the implementation of patch 7.15. We were given?? some in-game footage featuring Yoshida taking on the boss solo. Although he didn’t get far, and died pretty quickly to one of the newly revealed mechanics, it’s clear to see that the fight will definitely be a fun one.

The Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures

Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures in Final Fantasy XIV

Serving as something of a prologue to a brand new story arc for Hildibrand and co., the first Hildibrand quests for Dawntrail will be coming as part of patch ??7.15. There's no telling what Hildibrand will be getting up to this time around,? but commenters on the livestream commented that he looks too "handsome" and that it doesn't suit him. Not sure if I agree, but to each their own.

Other content

??The fol??lowing content will also be coming as part of future patches:

  • Nitowikwe Custom Deliveries (7.15)
  • Additional Wachumeqimeqi Quests (7.15)

    • Must have completed all prior Wachumeqimeqi Quests

  • Additional Role Quests (7.16)

    • Must have completed all prior Role Quests for Dawntrail

Other updates coming from patch 7.1

Updates

While these are perhaps not the most exciting of updates, there will also be various features either a??dded or tweaked:

  • Group Pose update

    • Added fishing poses
    • Camera controls improved when picture is rotated

  • Outfit Glamours

    • Stores specific combinations of gear in the Glamour Dresser as a single slot
    • Can be projected onto gear or added to Glamour Plates
    • Will initially support Lv. 1 glamour gear

  • Copy settings to another character

    • Copy's HUD layout, macros, config settings, and more
    • Applicable to characters on the same Square Enix account, and on the same device

  • Duty List update

    • Will display up to 10 quests at a time, as opposed to the current maximum of 5

  • Tilt Configuration

    • Added feature to show character tilting when turning
    • Enabled and disabled as desired
    • Toggling tilting on and off will also apply to mounts

  • Graphical update adjustments

    • Starting with 7.1, character-related feedback will be addressed
    • An additional phial of Fantasia will be distributed for free - only redeemable during 7.1x

Weapon Design Contest designs revealed

The winners from a previous Weapon Design Contest were revealed, although details of where we'll be able to get these from were not included. These weapons ?are all adorable in different unique ways, there's a staggering variety of kitchen utensils on offer??, and I'm suddenly feeling the urge to turn my main Dark Knight into a pretty pink princess:

In what will be very welcome news for players of Final Fantasy XIV, there is finally a release date for 7.??1 Crossroads, and we don’t have long to wait - it’s coming on November 12.

The announcement came as part of today’s Live Letter 84, during which we also had many in-game sneak peeks of new content that will be coming with the patch. With Dawntrail havi??ng released on July 2, it’s bee??n a long four month wait for the new content that has been expected and teased ever since.

Sphene's memorial in Final Fantasy XIV

When patch 7.1 drops on November 12, there will be a selection of new content to take part in. Of course, the new MSQ and FFXI-themed Alliance Raid Echoes of Vana’diel are definitel??y the things getting players most excited, but the following will also be added to keep us entertained until the next patch:

  • Pelupelu Allied Society Quests
  • Yuweyawata Field Station Dungeon
  • Minstrel’s Ballad: Sphene’s Burden
  • The Jade Stoa (Unreal)
  • New Pandaemonium quest

Sadly, we were not given news of Shade’s Triangle or Cosmic Exploration, despite players in the East having been given updated screenshots and information regard??ing the two new bits of content at events such as Fan Festivals in Korea and China. It seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we finally get some details here in the West.

We were, on the other hand, given details about a bu??nch of new content that players can dive into come November 12, as well as a new trailer that gives some hints about the direction that the story of Dawntrail is heading in:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb08eqW1QQo

According to Yoshida, while the story of Endwalker was essentially finished in 6.0, they’re returning to their old method of keeping a story going for longer than a single patch, and Dawntrail’s story will co?ntinue until patch 7.3. After that, we’ll start on a new story, although the same characters will likely be involved and embarking on a new adventure.

Final Fantasy XIV is one of those games that drags you into the setting and leaves you simply wanting more. Thankfully, there are a lot of dif?ferent merchandise items that can bring that love of Eorzea into the real world.?

If you, or someone you love, is an Eorzeaphile, there are a lot of incredible gift options out there. The holidays are fast approaching, and if you’re looking for the perfect Final Fantasy XIV-themed gift, I’ve got you covered.

For the purposes ?of this list, I’m only going to include official merchandise that can either be sourced directly from the Square Enix store, or through Aitai K??uji, who imports official merchandise from Asian countries.

Azem’s Crystal keychain

Any FFXIV player will tell you that Azem’s Crystal is incredibly important to them. The WoL is the reincarnation of Azem, and during Shadowbringers, it was discovered that Ardbert was the same on the First. It’s for this reason that the WoL was the only person who could see him. It’s oddly soothing to carry this connection to FFXIV with you wherever ??you go, and will be a tou?ching gift for any player.

If you have a device that is capable of being charged wirelessly, then you’ll appreciate this wireless charging pad. Complete with Azem’s Arcane Circle, which will be familiar from every 8-man trial duty in FFXIV, now you can charge your device in style. The light-up design illuminates when something is being charged??, and stays lit up for three minutes after the device is removed.

FFXIV TTRPG Starter Set

There's no better time to sit down with family and play a board game than during the festive period, and the FFXIV TTRPG Starter Set comes with everything you could possibly need to bring the world of Eorzea to your family tabletop over the holidays. Both the Player Book and Gamemaster Book are included, as well as pre-made character sheets for anyone who may be less familiar with the way things work in FFXIV

FFXIV Fluffy Slippers

With the weather changing and nights getting darker, there’s no better feeling than stepping into a cozy pair of slippers and curling up in the warmth of home. These FFXIV fluffy slippers inject a little bit of Eorzea into daily life, and there are a couple of different designs to choose from. The Moogle design is attached to white slippers, while the Namazu design comes on grey ones.

Elpis Flower Pendant

You can’t go wrong by giving your favorite lady a stunning piece of jewelry, and they don’t come more gorgeous (or meaningful) than this Elpis Flower Pendant. Elpis flowers are canonically known to represent hope, and anyone who has played through Endwalker will instinctively remember the scene at the end of the universe when Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus came to their side and manifested a?? carpet of Elpis flowers from the WoL’s mind every time they touch the pendant or catch sight of it in the mirror.

Encyclopaedia Eorzea

There isn’t a Final Fantasy XIV player in the world who wouldn’t love to know more about the world of Eorzea and beyond, and the Encyclopaedia Eorzea collection is the perfect way to learn everything there is to learn. There are three volumes, each covering details from s?eparate expansions, and the images inside are completely breathtaking.

Unbreakable Bonds Silver Pendant

For anyone who has paid close attention to Naoki Yoshida over the years, this pendant will be very familiar, as? he wears it almost religiously. It will also be familiar to anyone who has gone through the heartbreak that is the death of Haurchefant during Heavensward. According to the description on the Square Enix store, this pendant represents the fact that “though a shield may break, the bonds of friendship can never be brokenâ€?

Does the Eorzeaphile in your life constantly have coins in their pockets or littering the surfaces of the house? If so, there’s no better way to gather these coins together and save up for something special than depositing them all into this Namazu Coin Bank. It originally debuted at the Japanese Fan Festival back in 2019, but now it’s available? for all through the Square Enix stor?e.

Final Fantasy XIV often has promotional events with Taito, an arcade game company exclusive to Japan. There’s everything up for grabs from plushies, to Job-specific light-up Mouses, and everything in between. Unfortunately, these can be quite hard to get if you’re not in Japan, but Aitai Kuji offers them for a relatively low price.

If you’re looking to import something that you regularly wouldn’t be able to get, then this Moogle Sweater is definitely worth the effort. Usually exclusive to China, the blue and white color sche?me is adorable, and ?you will definitely be warm and cozy if you put this sweater on. Bear in mind that the sizes are based on Chinese standards, so you might want to take some measurements to clarify what size you need.

FFXIV Cookbook

There are a lot of delicious-looking meals in Final Fantasy XIV, and the FFXIV Cookbook al?lows you to take them out of the game and put them on the table to enjoy. With beautiful photos of the dishes that are sure to make you hungry, and clear instructions th??at are easy to follow, there’s nothing in this cookbook that can’t be made. I pull mine out at least once a week, and you probably will too.

Silkie Desk Cleaner

This is possibly the most random thing on this list, but it might also be the most useful. If you’re sick of dust between the keys on your keyboard, this Silkie Desk Cleaner is a godsend, and I use mine at least twice a week to dust off the keys. The tail is detachable to allow for easy cleaning, a??nd the ta??il poof is super soft. When it’s not being used to clean, the Silkie looks adorable as an ornament on the shelf.

If there’s one thing you’re always going to be in need of in Final Fantasy XIV, it’s Gil. It’s the main currency in Eorzea, and whether you’re shopping for gear to increase your iLvl, glamour items, or minions, you’re going to need it and a lot of it.

It’s fair to say that some things, especially sought-after things like mounts and minions, are ludicrously expensive to buy. It’s also f??air to s??ay that crafting is, as it’s widely acknowledged, the best way to make piles of Gil very quickly.

I’ve wracked my brain, thought back to my early in-game experience, and I’ve come up with some ways to make Gil without crafting in FFXIV. It’s worth remembering that none of these are likely to ?make you a Gillionaire, unless you get very lucky, and some are more effective than others. But hey, any m?oney is good money, right?

Treasure Maps are good for making a quick buck

A door within a Treasure Map dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

If you want to make a quick buck in FFXIV, one of the best ways to do i??t is by running Treasure Maps, especially high-level ones such as Loboskin and Br'aaxskin Maps.

While you won’t always spawn a portal upon? using a Map or get lucky in the dungeon itself, there’s always a chance that you’ll get a rare minion or sought-after material from a chest inside. They also give hefty sums of Gil as a reward on their own, so they’re?? worth exploring.

A word of warning: if something particularly valuable comes up, like a minion or rare material, and you have the opportunity to gamble, don't do it. This is a painful lesson, and one that cos?t me 20 million Gil at one point, so please don??'t make the same mistake!

Before you can take part in the Treasure Hunt, you’ll need to complete the level 36 quest “Treasure and Tribul??ationsâ€? which can be picked up by talking to H’loonh in Eastern La Noscea (X:21.1, Y:21.1).

Work towards your weekly challenges

The Challenge Log in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

After completing the level 15 quest “Rising to the Challengeâ€?(head to Li?msa Lominsa Upper Decks and? talk to I’tolwann (X:11.4, Y:11.0) if you haven’t done this yet!), you’ll gain access to the Challenge Log.

This log is split into different categories, including Battle, Crafting & Gathering, and Levequests. While some challenges reward other currencies upon completion, such as Wolf Marks or MGP, most will provide you with a nice chunk of change (either 1,000 or 2,000 G??il) ??when completed.

The Challenge Log refreshes at the same time as the general weekly reset, 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, so make sure ??you complete them before this happens, or you’ll miss out on free Gil.

Be the ‘adventurer in need/h2>

The Duty Finder window showing Adventurer in Need in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

When running daily roulettes, it’s always a good idea to check which type of player is classed as “in need.If you queue for a Duty as this type of Job (Healer, ?Tank, or DPS), you’ll gain a significant boost of EXP, and also Gil as well. As you can see from the image above, the reward is pretty hefty, so it's always worth dabbling in different classes so you can always play the Adventurer in Need role.

You’ll only recei?ve ??this boost if you queue for a duty with less than the required number of people in your party. If you are queueing with three friends for a Dungeon roulette, this buff won’t apply.

Levequests are repetitive, but they come with monetary rewards

A Large Scale Levequest in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

I’m the first person to admit ?that doing Levequests is not my idea of a fun time. However, some of the higher level Levequests offer a comparatively huge amount of Gil when you consider how little effort i?s involved.

This is especially true fo?r Large Scale Levequests, available only in Foundation. Some of these Levequests offer a reward of more than 10,000 Gil per completion, so they’re definitely worth doing.

You get t??hree Levequest Allowances every 24 hours of real time up to a maximum of 100; what you do with them is up to you. I’d suggest using them if you have them because otherwise, you’re just missing out on free Gil for very little effort.

Hoard and sell everything

Selling items to a vendor in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

Whether you’ve been grinding out dungeon runs, tackling FATEs in the overworld, or your retainers have returned from a venture with items in tow, almost everything can be sold for a profit in FFXIV. It’s ??unlikely that you’ll gain anything of significant value by any of these methods, though it does happen, but you will be able to amass a lot of items.&nb??sp;

If you don’t want to mess around with the Marketboard, you can simply head to any vendor who? sells items for Gil and select the “Buybacktab in the pop-up window. Either click and drag items from your inventory into the vendor’s pop-up window or right-click the item in your inventory and click “sell

If you’re comfortable using the Marketboard, it can be a good place to sell stacks of items, especially high-level items that you’ve gathered yourself. Even if y?ou’re opposed to Crafting, you should definitely look into Gathering. It can be relaxing to zone?? out, listen to music, and pile up the materials in your inventory.

And if you’re up for a little bit of dodgy trading, keep an eye on item prices on different servers by utilizing tools such as Universalis. Items ??can often be purchased cheaply on other servers and sold for a profit in your home ?world. I know it feels scummy, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do, sometimes.

Make the most of your FC credits and GC seals

Grand Company desk in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

There are a couple of things that you can do with your FC and GC seals to transform the currency to Gil:

  • Stock up on GC seals by trading in usually untradeable dungeon gear, and as long as you’ve reached the rank of Captain, you’ll be able to buy Materiel Crates. These contain minions and mounts, which can sometimes be pretty valuable.
  • Use your FC credits to purchase items from the OIC Quartermaster. These items can then be sold on the Martketboard for Gil. Miniature Aetherytes are a safe bet here, as Estate owners need them to teleport directly to their house.

You can also purchase some materials which will be needed by Crafte?rs, some of which can also be sold on the Marketboard.

Keep an eye on Moogle Treasure Trove events

Itinerant Moogle in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

Invariably, Moogle Treasure Trove events offer at least one popular item, which can then? be sold on the Marketboard for Gil. Usually, this is a minion or mount, so keep an eye on which are available in each event.

Take the Hunt for Goetia, for instance, which is currently underway. One of? the rewards is the Alte Roite Prism, which is ??usually worth a pretty penny, and the Early to Rise hairstyle, which many players choose for their character. These are good items to purchase using Tomestones, set aside, and then sell later when demand increases again.

Side quests might not make you rich, but at least it’s something

A map with side quests in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

There are hundreds of side quests in Final Fantasy XIV, and ??every single one of them rewards at least a handful of Gil upon completion. While it might only seem like pennies, clearing out an en??tire zone of side quests will increase your coffers by a pretty hefty sum.

Yes, they’re tedious at times, and if you’re not careful, y??ou’ll s??pend more teleporting around the map than you earn by doing them. However, if you’re really stuck and dedicate yourself to flying rather than teleporting, you can earn enough to buy yourself something pretty when you get back to a city state.

New patch? New money making opportunities!

Meteor in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail
Screenshot by Destructoid

This is especially true at the start of a new major expansion, as we've recently seen with the addition of Dawntrail. However, it applies to eve?ry single patch that adds new content. New patches bring new items, and at least for a little while, those items will be incredibly sought ??after and spike in price.

While you're running new dungeons or trials, for example, think twice before using that minion that you rolled high on. Sure, it might be c?ute, and it might be something that you want, but if you're looking to make some Gil, I can guarantee that you can make at least 100k by selling that minion on the Marketboard. Trust me, you're going to be running that dungeon time and again, and the mi?nion will grace you with its presence once more.

On a similar note, pay attention to what crafters need to make new recipes, especially Master Recipes. If you're here, you're not likely?? to be crafting yourself, but there's nothing stopping you from gathering, and new resources always see a spike in price on the Marketboard immediately after a pa??tch.

Bicolor Gemstones and Shared FATEs are your ticket to (relative) riches

Shared FATEs in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail
Screenshot by Destructoid

This ties into the previous point, but I'm giving it a section of its own to hammer home the point. Bicolor Gemstones are a goldmine. Whether you use th??em to purchase Gemstone-exclusive materials to sell or you purchase Bicolor Gemstone Vouchers, you'll be able to make money off of them.

With that in mind, and I cannot emphasize this enough, you should definitely do your Shared FATEs. For starters, they reward Gil just for completing them, but you'll also earn up to 40 Bicolor Gemstones depending on bonuses and your level of participation. Materials cost ??l??ess than 10 Gemstones each, while Vouchers cost 100 each.

Immediately after Dawntrail dropped, these Bicolor Gemstone Vouchers were selling for around 250k each, and they're still currently selling for around 100k each, depending on which world you play on. On the materials side, those items are always sought after, and because they're exclusive, players who need ??them quickly have no choice but to buy them on the Marketboard.??

Halloween is fast approaching and as always (well, except for 2022 when it was held in January due to delays), FFXIV’s All Saintsâ€?Wa??ke is filling Eorzea with the spooky spi??rit of the season. This year’s event rewards are particularly nice, and here’s how you can get everything.

The Night of Devilry set is a glamour set comprising five pieces (head, hands, feet, torso, and legs), and it perfectly sums up the season. It’s fully dyeable (yes, even the horns) with two dye slots, so there’s endless possibilit?ies for?? customization as well.

How to get the Night of Devilry set in Final Fantasy XIV

Complete “The Aether-starved Ahrimanquest

To begin this year’s event quest, “The Aether-starved Ahriman head to Old Gridania and find the Pumpkin-headed Apparition at Mih Khetto’s Amphitheatre (X:10.2, Y:9.4)

They’ll delve into the history of All Saintsâ€?Wake, and express their desire to see the festivitie??s enjo?yed by not only the living, but the ghouls as well. Unfortunately, while most of the ghouls and ghosts are happy not to prey on mortals, one is not so willing to give up their spooking ways.

Papa Gruff in Final Fantasy XIV

Make your way to the Greatloam Growery and talk to Papa Gruff (X:8.0, Y:8.3) to find out what’s going on. It turns out that Philcox, his single-eyeballed friend, is not very happy with the new method for aether-obtainme??nt, and it’s up to us to change his mind. As he’s run off, you’ll need to search for?? him.

You’ll be given a pretty ?substantial area to search, but you can find him pretty easily by heading south from where you were. He’s standing at (X:8.2, Y:10.1).

Philcox in Final Fantasy XIV

After talking to him, use the sootheemote to calm?? down his anger, and he’ll tell you the real reason that he’s unsure about the aether-gathering method.

To complete this first quest, head back to Mih Khetto’s Amphith?eatre and talk to the Pumpkin-headed Apparition again. You’ll be given a dialogue choice, but both options lead to the same conclusion, so it doesn’t matter w??hich one you choose.

Complete the “All Fiends Sated on All SaintsWakequest

Philcox in the Night of Devilry outfit in Final Fantasy XIV

Although Philcox is now fully kitted out in the Night of Devilry set, you’ve still got some work ahead if you want to get it yourself. To begin the second of this year’s ??event quests, talk to Philcox, and then it’s time to head out in search of some troubled souls to aid. Talk to Philcox again at (X:9.1, Y:8.5) and he’ll begin to accompany you.

You’ll need to talk to a few people to get through this quest, starting with the Flustered Fellow (X:11.4, Y:5.3). He’s been ?helping a lost?? little girl find her mother, but she’s disappeared, and he has somewhere he needs to be.

Philcox will take responsibility for himself, and you’ll then need to find the Distressed Damsel (X:14.3, Y:6.8). Papa Gruff has been trying to work his own magic on her, but she??’s too scared to apprecia??te his attempts.

Philcox will then use his special gift to search out anyone in the vicinity who is feeling anxious, and then head out to retrieve the lost girl's mother. Af??ter they return, Philcox will get a confidence boost and set out on his own to help others, while you’re free to return to the Pumpkin-headed Apparition at Mih Khetto’s Amphitheatre.

Talking to her will complete the quest and reward you with the Night of Devilry set, and it will also grant you access to Sneaky Hollow. To get there, talk to the Unusual Usher at (X:10.1, Y:9.2)

Every now and then, an opportunity arises in the world of Final Fantasy XIV that offers some pretty epic rewards for relatively little effort. The Golden Opportunity Screenshot Sweepstakes i?s an excellent example of this.

Between October 15 and October 28, players have the chance to enter in-game Final Fantasy XIV screenshots into a sweepstakes, and some of the rewards on offer are pretty valuable.? However, rules are strict, and it’s a good?? idea to learn them before diving into Group Pose.

FFXIV Golden Opportunity Screenshot Sweepstakes prizes

Th?ere are a total of 1,400 prizes to be given out as part of the sweepstakes, and the breakdown of prizes is as follows.

  • Gilded Mikoshi Flute - 150 winners
  • Magitek Avenger G1 Identification Key - 150 winners
  • Chrysomallos Horn - 150 winners
  • Golden Ronkan Flute - 100 winners
  • Golden Beaver - 100 winners
  • Khloe's Gold Certificate of Commendation - 50 winners
  • Gold Ore - 15 winners
  • Gold Needle - 15 winners

It’s worth noting that while some of these prizes won’t set you back a staggering amount of Gil if you chose to purchase them, th??e Gilded Mikoshi Flute alone is currently selling on North American Marketboards f?or between 50 and 60 million Gil. That’s one hell of a prize, and Square Enix are giving away 150 of them.

How to enter the Golden Opportunity Screenshot Sweepstakes

In order to enter the sweepstakes, you’ll need to take some killer shots in FFXIV’s Group Pose. There doesn’t seem to be any official word on what the Group Pose screenshot should include in terms of theme, but the go-to on Twitter currently is gold, with many people choosing to take shots in one of FFXIV’s many Treasure Dungeons.

//twitter.com/Yozora_Ookami/status/1846142973030830173

When you post your screenshot, you’ll need to use the hashtag FFXIVGoldenSweepstakes

You’re not limited to only one entry, either. You can submit one screenshot per day, although you’ll only be eligible for one prize regardless of how many screenshots you’ve submit?ted.

Before you can submit your screenshot, you?’ll need to make use of some of the stickers includ??ed in Group Pose. To do this, open up the ‘Effects/Frame Settingstab in Group Pose settings, and then select ‘Sticker Mode

Specifically, screenshots submitted will only be eligible if they include the following?? stickers:

  • Character Name
  • Display Home World
  • Date/Time
  • Area Name

Then, once you’ve submitted your entry on Twitter, you’ll need to submit it through the official form as well. There are two forms, one for North American players and another for those based in Europe. All you need to do on the form is select your Home World, enter your characters full name, and th?en link to the Twitter post of your submission.

And that’s it! You’ll be entered into the drawing to win one of the epic prizes I mentioned earlier. If you’re still unsure about anything, you can check out the full rules and all of the legal stuff over on the FFXIV Forums.

The Free Login Campaign, not to be confused with its spiritual event cousin, the Free to Play Campaign, is a periodical promotional event that rewards players who have stepped away from FFXIV for a while. It’s a way o??f enticing former players back in, and it works like a charm.

There are, of course, some requirements that need to be met before you qualify to mak??e use of this promotional event:

  • You must have purchased and registered a copy of Final Fantasy XIV on any platform
  • All characters associated with your service account must have been inactive for at least 30 days

If you meet this criteria, and you’ve been getting that it??ch that ??only a feud with a Primal can scratch, then I’ve got good news â€?between now (October 11) and October 31, you can get 96 hours of free playtime!

Remember that this 96-hour countdown star?ts the first time you log in and doesn’t pause, even if you log off. That means that if you dip your toe in for an hour on a Wednesday and then try to log back in on Saturday, you’ll be out of playtime. As such, you’ll need to use this available time wisely, and I’ve got a few pointers to make the most of the time.

Making the most of October's Free Login Campaign

You can take part in both All Saints' Wake and The Hunt for Goetia if you time your Free Login Campaign just right in Final Fantasy XIV

Coming up before the cut-off point for the campaign, two events will be availa?ble to all players, whether they have a subscription or not:

If you want to make the most of your free hours, and get some pretty badass items to boot, I’d suggest holding off on starting your campaign participation for a few days. The best time to begin, especially for those of us who are sadly a little preoccupied with the ??horrible responsibilities of being a grown-up during the week, is Saturday, October 19.

Provided you have that ?weekend free in your diary, you can cram as much activity into those 96 hours as humanly possible and probably stock up on a hefty sum of Goetia to spend with the Itinerant Moogle.

Of course, if your schedule doesn’t quite line up with this, I’d still suggest not logging in until you’ve got a couple of days spare to binge ?and trying to make the most ??of the two events taking place within the Free Login Campaign time frame.

What happens when the Free Login Campaign is over?

You'll need to subscribe after the Free Login Campaign ends in Final Fantasy XIV

If you want to play after the Free Login Campaign? is over or your 96 hours runs out before you've done everything you want to do, you'll need to subscribe again to continue your adventures in Eorzea.

If it's been a while and your memory of FFXIV's subscription costs is hazy, then check out our guide on just that. If you want to know what you have to look forward to in the coming months, we've got just the event schedule you need.

The calendar of events in Final Fantasy XIV is surging forward as always, and this year’s installme??nt of All SaintsWake will be returning on October 18.

All Saintsâ€?Wake is the annual celebration of ghosts, ghouls, and all things spooktacular within Eo??rzea, and the city states will be decked out with pumpkins, ghosties, and of course, costumed players.

This year’s All SaintsWake is dubbed “The Feast of Thanks for the Foulest Fiends and as always, the festivities will begin in Gridania at Mih Khetto’s Amphitheatre. The Pumpkin-Headed Apparition will be waiting to talk to us from 12 a.m. PST / 3 a.m. EST on October 18, and there’s no telling what he has? in store for us.

The Night of Devilry is upon us

The reward for completing the event this year is a particularly dark and spooky level one glamor set that comes fully set up with dual dye slots to customize your look at All SaintsWake. The Night of Devilry set comes complete wit?h:

  • Night of Devilry Horns
  • Night of Devilry Shirt
  • Night of Devilry Fingerless Gloves
  • Night of Devilry Trousers
  • Night of Devilry Boots

The second item, which will?? be available for purchase during the event, is the Flying Pumpkin housing decor item. It's gloriously black?, definitely creepy-looking, and perfect for the season.

You’ll also be able to purchase items from previous yearsAll SaintsWake celebrations by visiting the Bespectacled Peddler near the starting point for the quest. Last year’s rewards, the A??ll SaintsCharm emote and Wall-Mounted Vampire Bats housing item, will also be released on the FFXIV Online Store when this year’s event goes live.

As we always do, we’ll have a full guide available for ??the event when it goes live on October 18.

In light of the devastation caused to the south-eastern states of the United States by Hurricane Helene, FFXIVs automatic housing demolition function has been tempora?rily suspended on all No?rth American Data Centers.

Hurricane Helene first hit Florida on September 26 and then made its way through multiple states, destroying homes and taking lives. Many homes within the affected states are still without electricity or connection to the online world, and as such, FFXIV ?has made the decision to suspend the aut??omatic demolition of player housing.

All Worlds on the following Data Centers will be affected by this demoli?tion hiatus:&nb??sp;

  • Crystal
  • Aether
  • Dynamis
  • Primal

In a post on the Lodestone, it was stated that automatic demolition has been put on pause from October 2 at 1:08 a.m. PDT, and will continue indefinitely while the situation is monitored. Developers stated that it is their “sincere hope that recovery is swift, and those of you who were affected will be able to rejoin us in FFXIV soon./p>

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen automatic demolition be put on hold after the devastating effects of a natural disaster. Back in January 2024, FFXIV did the same thing after a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the Noto Peninsula in Japan. Before that, h?ousing demolition was also suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and after a previous Japanese earthquake in 2016.

Housing estates in FFXIV enter the automatic demolition status after a month of not being entered by the owner, in the case of personal housing, or a member of an FC?? in the case of Free Company housing.

With the Tokyo Game Show 2024 coming to an end, Naoki Yoshida and Toshio Murouchi have sat down and provided viewers around the world with the first sneak peak of what’s to come in Final Fantasy XIV's patch 7.1.

We now have a name for the patch, Crossroads, and as usual there are more MSQ quests and a new dungeon, Yuweyawat??a Field Station, to be completed. With its release planned for “mid-Novemberâ€? Crossroads is jam-packed with new content and features, so without further ado, let’s dive into today’s reveals.

Note: The stream was in Japanese only, and information here comes from presentation slides (which were thankfully translated) and live translations provided by Miuna in the FFXIV Official Discord server.

Echoes of Vana’diel details revealed

Revealing that he has undertaken the first play test with 24 players, Yoshida proudly showed off some scree??nshots of the upcoming Ec?hoes of Vana’diel Alliance Raid quest line:

Part one of the quest line will be called ‘Jeuno: The First Walkâ€? and the locations will be familiar to anyone who has played Final Fantasy XI. According to Yoshida, the same artists and designers who worked on these locations in FFXI have also worked on them in FFXIV, so they’re true to the source material.

It was also revealed that, to remain in-keeping with the fact that boss names in FFXI were not translated into Japanese, they also won’t be translated in FFXIV.

Embrace the chaos

The first ever savage tier 24-man ra??id is to be added in patch 7.1, aptly named “Chaotic Alliance Raidsâ€? although they may not be what you’re expecting.

Rather than going through an entire Alliance Raid with beefed up trash mobs, Chaotic Alliance Raids will instead be 24-man encounters with the final boss of the raid. The fir?st of these will be The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic), which will see players face off against a now very familiar ??????????????????????????enemy who has a whole new range of mechanics to throw at us.

That expla??in?s why she’s on the official Crossroads patch art.

Sign up for extra credit in the Hall of the Novice

A surprising, although not unwelcome reve??al from today’s Live Letter wa??s the fact that the Hall of the Novice is getting additional lessons for people to complete once they hit level 49.

These lessons will be ab?out s?pecific mechanics, including and not limited to:

  • Different types of tank busters
  • Spread markers
  • Stack markers
  • Look away markers
  • Towers

It was noted that these lessons aren’t compulsory, but were added after issues were raised, particularly from “overseas playersâ€? about those graduating from Sprout status being unaware of how some mechanics are supposed to play out??.

Dawntrail’s first Allied Society and Custom Deliveries

The first of Dawntrailâ€?/em>s Allied Socie??ty quest lines will ta??ke us to Urqopacha, and put us back in contact with the Pelupelu who reside there. Few details were given about what the quest line would entail, but it was revealed that this would be an Allied Society for Battle jobs.

The Pelupelu will be the battle job Allied Society in Final Fantasy XIV 7.1

We were also introduced to our first Custom Deliveries NPC for Dawntrail, ??Nitowikwe, who looks to be based in Shaaloani. According to the screenshots, we’re likely to be working alongside the reflections of the train crew who helped us force our way into Heritage Found.

Byakko’s making a comeback

The first of Dawntrail’s ??Unreal Trials has been revealed, and it will see players face off against Byakko once again in T??he Jade Stoa (Unreal). Little was revealed about the mechanics that players can expect, but I’m looking forward to taking another freefall down the tunnel of doom.

Yoshida also noted that now that we’ve seen the first of the Unreal Trials for Dawntrail, we can gather which direction they’re going to go in for the rest of t?he ex??pansion. It’s likely that we’ll be taking on a few more Auspices before the expansion reaches its conclusion.

Trials and Raids

The only Dawntrail Trial to ??not have an Extreme version, The Interphos, will?? now get its more difficult counterpart in the shape of The Minstrel’s Ballad: Sphene’s Burden.

We wer?e also shown some new glimpses of the next Ultimate Raid, Futures Rewritten (Ultimate), including more new screenshots of the foes we’re set to face, including what appears to be Gaia in a much more powerful form. Futures Rewritten (Ultimate) is not set to be released when the main 7.1 patch is implemented, but is expected to come one or two weeks later.

And of course, Hildibrand

Love him or hate him, at this point no expansion would be complete without him (except Shadowbringers, which seems to have done just fine without hi?m). Either way, the gentlemanly detective is back for the Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures.

From the screenshots shown, it’s clear to see? that Hildibrand and co. will be heading to Solution 9. How and why remains to be seen, but there are sure to be fireworks, and bombs.

But wait, there’s more!

There were so many new additions and updates mentioned in the one hour long Live Letter, and it’s ??impossible to gather them all together in order to pass them on. Rath??er than try, here’s everything else that was mentioned, as well as any relevant screenshots:

  • New Game+ support will be added for 7.0 including:

    • MSQ
    • Job Quests
    • Role Quests

  • Duty Support will be added for 7.0 dungeons

    • Duty Support for non-MSQ dungeons to be added at a later date
    • Duty Support to be added for Halatali

  • PVP Update

    • New actions to be added for all jobs except Viper and Pictomancer
    • Arena improvements for Red Sands and Cloud Nine
    • Balance adjustments for Frontline and Rival Wings
    • PvP Series 7 begins

  • PvE balance adjustments, although specifics were not detailed
  • Doman Mahjong update

    • Voiced reactions and commentary from Scions to be added
    • Individual voices can be chosen from a new menu
    • New voices will be purchased from the Gold Saucer with MGP

  • Housing update

    • The ability to change the interior design of your house regardless of housing district will be implemented
    • New modern and pillarless interior designs to be added
    • Changing the interior of your house can be done as often as you like at no cost
    • Items in the house when the interior is changed will automatically be sent into storage

Now, for those of us who weren’t able to make it to Seattle in time for PAX West, the hoodie is up for pre-order on the Square Enix Store, costing $74.99 USD. Available in two colors, the hoodie comes complete with an image of the hidden map from the Tour Turali website:

Back when the site first launched ahead of Dawntrail, players were left hunting for all of the map pieces and some on Reddit took things to the next level, working together to piece it together in spectacular fashion. On a personal level, this image is a special memory for me beca??use my Fiancé spent hours trying to find all of the pieces, as though the website was a game in and of itself.

The hoodie comes in two colors, maroon and light blue. Both colors have a small ‘Tural: Board of Turalismâ€?motif on the chest and the FFXIV meteor logo at the top of the left sleeve.

There are many seasonal events held throughout the year in Final Fantasy XIV, and it can be hard to keep up with what's coming and going. To help sort your schedule, we've got a rolling list of the usual FFXIV events,? timing estim??ates, and even speculation about what's to come.

Below, we'll outline the FFXIV 2024 calendar's confirmed and tentative ev?ent schedule along with some events that may have wrapped up for the year. Additionally, you can check out th?e MMO's usual calendar too, along with a little explainer on each of the year's festivities.

The FFXIV 2024 event calendar

It’s hard to give an exac??t date for every event, as the timing changes a little every year, and there’s no guessing when irregular events (such as The Maiden’s Rhapsody) may return. That being said, there are a few that (usually) loop around every year.

Ongoing events in 2024

  • TBD

Upcoming events in 2024

  • The Moogle Treasure Trove: The Hunt for Goetia (October 15 - 7.1 Release)
  • All Saints' Wake (October 18 - November 4)

Tentative 2024 event schedule

  • Starlight Celebration

Expired events

Recurring FFXIV seasonal events

While some years haven't always followed this pattern, FFXIV mostly sticks to the same schedule of seasonal staples while throwing a few new festivities in here and there. The table below outlines the usual schedule from year to year, but if you want a peek at timely announcements on newcomers, maybe pencil in time to watch the next FFXIV Live Letter stream.

Event Month Information
Heavensturn January Held in Celebration of the New Year, inspired by the Chinese Zodiac animal of the coming year.
Valentione's Day February The Valentine's event is held every year to celebrate love and romance.
Little Ladies' Day March A Cherry Blossom-themed event.
Hatching-tide April Easter event, usually involving colorful Rabbits of mysterious origin.
Make It Rain Campaign June Increases MGP earned through activities within the Gold Saucer.
Moonfire Faire August A celebration of all things Summer, usually involves activities at Costa Del Sol.
The Rising August Held to celebrate the anniversary of A Realm Reborn, usually happens during the last week of August.
All Saint’s Wake October Halloween event that usually takes place within Gridania for spooky rewards.
Starlight Celebration December The festive event which celebrates the winter holidays within Eorzea.

FFXIV events in 2024, what to expect

While seasonal affairs contain some degree of overlap, their themes, occurrences, and occasional unique mechanisms may mean some special attention or prioritization. The list below breaks down every FFXIV seasonal event, along with the types of rewards the ?festivals offer, and even a few handy links to our other, more specific breakdowns.

Breaking Brick Mountains (Dragon Quest collaboration)

This Dragon Quest tribute doesn't come along often, but it's been popping in and out of the FFXIV event rotation since the game's earliest 2.x days. The ??Breaking Brick Mountains event rewards some ti??me-limited goodies like the Wind-up Brickman minion, King Slime Crown, and Thug's Mug.

Little Ladies' Day and the Hatching-tide

This year, Square Enix revealed it would combine two events into one by celebrating Little Ladies' Day and the Hatching-tide through one questline. While that may seem like a bummer, it doesn't change much in the way of seasonal FFXIV activities. This time, you'll get the adorable pink Peatie mount, and the MMO is supplementing the unusually crammed event schedule with Moogle Tomestone activities, and by recirculating old collaborations, like the FFXV crossover.

A Nocturne for Heroes, the FF14 x FF15 crossover

After visiting Eorzea in 2019 and 2021, Noctis returns to the realm in February 2024 for another FFXIV tie-in. A Nocturne for Heroes is one of several Square Enix RPGs that get the MMO treatment thanks to its online sibling, and this questline is a little more involved than the usual seasonal fanfar??e.

Even if for no other reason, the FFXV collab is popular for its Regalia Type-G mount. You know the one; it's the four-seater convertible that looks a bit like something out of Gran Turismo an?d a little out ?of place cruising around The Azim Steppe.

Valentione's Day

Love is in the Eorzean air once a year though perhaps more if you're standing around in Limsa. Anyway, this year's Valentine's Day event doesn't deviate from the norm, awarding players with more 2024 exclusive event items in February, including the?? Love Heart emote and Heart Chair furnishing. If you miss out, those things will inevitably join the Cash Shop in 2025.

The Maiden's Rhapsody, the FF14 x FF11 crossover

The Maiden's Rhapsody welcomes the Final Fantasy XI event back to Eorzea again as it prepares for Dawntrail later thi?s year. While it's an older questline, newer players can now indulge in a little crossover lore, plus score the fancy Amatsu glamour only available from this event.

Heavensturn

Heavensturn was the first seasonal event in FFXIV this year, running from December 31, 2023 to January 2024. This iteration of the event offered the Ryunosuke minion. To read more about the last Endwalker-era celebration, check out our guide on Heavensturn 2024.

Yo-kai Watch: Gather One, Gather All

The Yo-kai Watch collaboration for FFXIV is finally live, with the crossover event returning April 24, 2004, and running until the next expansion, Dawntrail, launches in late June.

For those who have missed the event during its previous appearan??ces, the Yo-kai Watch crossover event gives players the opportunity to take part in FATEs while eq??uipped with a Yo-kai watch to earn medals, which can then be exchanged for mounts, minions, and even weapons. The Endwalker version also added a fancy new, MGP-exclusive framer's kit.

With Yo-kai Watch celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and a new game being released in the next few months, only time will tell when this event is likely to return to FFXIV for yet another round. Perhaps next time, we'll see wea??pon additions for the Version 6.0 jobs, like Reaper and Sage.

The Path to Infernal, the FF14 x FF16 crossover

Finally, the Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI collab gets its official launch date, beginning on April 2, 2024. Yoshi-P confirmed the news at this year's PAX East, and if it's anything like those other FF-related collabs, you should hop on this quick, just so you don't wait years for its return. The FFXVI crossover event will se??e players working with Clive to defeat Eikons. Rewards for this event include:

  • Torgal mount
  • Torgal minion
  • Clive’s Attire (Metian Attire)

If you keep an eye on Final Fantasy XIV's Lodestone feed, you can get the heads up for new streams scheduled. However, we've got the details below on when FFXIV will host its next Live Letter, resources for the? last ones, and what you can expect.

FFXIV Live Letter schedule, timezones, and countdown

The next FFXIV Letter from the Producer LIVE airs during Tokyo Game Show 2024 on Saturday, September 28 at 10:50 p.m. PDT as part of the Square Enix Lineup.

FFXIV Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXXXIII (83) hit our last estimated within September, and debuts as the first event of its kind since the MMO launched its Dawntrail expansion. However, don't assume this date means radio silence from Yoshida and his team until then. Expect Lodestone updates and communication through official social channels detailing hotfixes, patches, and any FFXIV downtime.

What to expect from FFXIV Live Letter 83

This upcoming Live Letter will only be available in Japanese, but Square Enix should have presentation slides available in English. Regardless of your familiarity, we still know plenty of what to expect from the upcoming livestream as fans can look forward to details around Shade's Triangle, Cosmic Ex??ploration, the Future's Rew?ritten Ultimate Raids, MSQ updates, and more.

FFXIV Letter from the Producer LIVE 82 (includes Japanese to English interpretation)

For those keeping track, this is Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LXXXII (82). During the last broadcast on May 16, director and producer Naoki Yoshida delivered a nearly 5-hour-long presentation on upcoming changes and additions launching with Dawntrail. This included details on rewor??ks and updates to all of the MMO's older Jobs, plus peeks at the two new ones, Viper and Pictomancer.

Yoshida also noted the media tour was quickly approaching at the end of May, and that we'd see more from Dawntrail as those articles and impressions go live something to hold us over on the road to FFXIV Version 7.0. As for wh?at you can expect at the next Live Letter, we'll likely see a few things like the launch trailer, a closer look at new zones, and more progress on the graphics update.

FFXIV Live Letter language and translation resources

While the streams are created in Japanese, for FFXIV's Letter from the Produce??r LIVE LXXXI stream, Square Enix has said that it will feature a ??live Japanese to English interpreter.

This is common with the Live Letter streams but not guaranteed. For when they don't, or just if you missed the stream, Square Enix releases a digest of t??he ?Live Letter on the official forums. These summarize all the information in English.

There's no shortage of talented fan initiatives, either, as the FFXIV subreddit maintains a Discord channel of live inte?rpretations in an unofficial capacity. After the stream, fan translators typically round up or clarify those points, too, giving eager players a resource that's typically faster than waiting for the official Lodestone post.

Picture the scene: you’ve opened the Final Fantasy XIV Launcher, you press play, and an ?error box pops up containing hard to decipher details and a mysterious ??URL. You can’t get in to play, but what can you do to resolve this issue?

There are a few things to try to fix the FFXIV script error, some of which are more technical than others. It’s worth noting that simply waiting for a while and letting the issue resolve itself is a viable solution, as it usually does within the same day. However, if you’re in a hurry, here are a few troubleshooting fixes that may help you fix the FFXIV Script Launcher Error.

Try closing and restarting FFXIV to fix the Script Error

I hate to be that person, but have you tried turning it off and on again? If you’re playing through Steam, try exiting the Steam client through the task bar and opening it again, as well. Some users see to indicate this is all i?t takes to fix the issue.

Whitelist the URL from the FFXIV error

This is where things can get a little technical, but not quite?? as technical as the next option.

  1. Search for 'Internet Options' in the Start menu
  2. Open the Security tab and select ‘Restricted Sites/li>

  3. Click on the ‘Sitesbutton and paste the URL from the error in the bar to whitelist it

A possible fix for the Launcher Error in Final Fantasy XIV

This may or may?? not fix the issue, but if not, you might need to head for the last resort or simply wait it out.

Uninstall and reinstall FFXIV/Steam

Like I said, this is absolutely a last resort and should only be done when nothing else is working, or the issue hasn’t resolved itself. Many people who have encountered the s?cript error have reported that this does indeed fix the issue, although it’s probabl?y not a viable option if you encounter it fairly often.

Final Fantasy XIV fan and content creator SuperLouis64 is splashing paint on paper with a custom controller to attack enemies in Square Enix's beloved MMO. The color of paint with this Final Fantasy XIV paintbru??sh controller determines which skill is used for the Pictomancer Job; it's absolutely genius.

When SuperLouis64 brushes blue onto the surface of paper on an easel, Final Fantasy XIV queues up the "Holy in White" attack. It makes thematic sense as the Pictomancer is a new class from Dawntrail that uses a paintbrush as a weapon.

//twitter.com/SuperLouis_64/status/1833356321220960519

"I spent the weekend prototyping a Paintbrush controller for Pictomancer and I finally cracked the code!!" wrote SuperLouis64 on X. "I ended up going with t?he plan of having the player scan colors of paint and then literally PAINT to use the ability."

The content creator says there's a lot left to build, but the "prototype is amazing." It's likely this Final Fantasy XIV paintbrush controller will see its way to completion, as this isn't the first time SuperLouis64 has built a strange input for the game. He has previously made a gunblade controller made from NERF, where you shoot darts to fire at enemies and then use motion controls to swing the sword. Additionally, he's been able to punch foes using boxing gloves with the Monk class.

Those aren't the craziest things that SuperLouis64 has done in the realm of gaming. We previously covered this content creator beating Elden Ring boss Godrick with a controller made from bananas.

Another amazing feat from the gaming community includes a feat from CarcinogenSDA, who rapidly beat Resident Evil 2 Remake without taking any damage during Games Done Quick 2024.

If you’re leveling your crafters in Final Fantasy XIV, it might be a good id??ea to look into turning your favorites into Specialists. To do this, you’ll need Soul of the Crafter, which will give unique perks and actions when unl?ocked.

Soul of the Crafter works differently to Soul Crystals (or Job Stones, they’re both the same thing). Instead of automatically getting a Crystal at a certain level, you need to unlock Soul of the Crafter through a side ??quest, and then assign specific crafting classes as specialisms. It gets a li?ttle convoluted, but I can talk you through it.

How to unlock Soul of the Crafter

Lydirlona in Final Fantasy XIV

After reaching level 55 in any crafting class, you can head to Mor Dhona and talk to Lydirlona (X:22.3, Y:6.8) to pick up the quest ‘Beloved of the Builderâ€? After completing this quest, you’ll gain three Soul o??f the Crafters, which can be exchanged for specific crafting souls.

To exchange a Soul of the Crafter for a specific classes Soul Crystal, you’ll need to talk to Al??deran in the Pilla?rs (X:14.6, Y:10.7). Select which class you want to specialize in, and then give up one of the Soul of the Crafters.

How to change which classes are specialist

Alderan in Final Fantasy XIV

If you want to switch specialisms, you’ll first need to get your hands on another Soul of the Crafter. Luckily, these are pretty easy to come by and you can purchase them in exchange for Scrips from any Scrip Exchange. Currently, they cost 480 Purple Craftersâ€?Scrips each.

With a new Soul of the Crafter in hand, simply head back to The Pillars and talk to Alderan again to switch your specialism. It's worth remembering that you can only have three specialist crafting classes at any time, so yo??u'll need to choose?? carefully when deciding.

What does Soul of the Crafter do?

Becoming a specialist in a class gives unique actions in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

After?? you’ve turned the basic Soul of the Crafter into a Sou?l Crystal for a specific crafting class, that class will gain a small boost to all of its stats:

  • +20 Craftsmanship
  • +20 Control
  • +15 CP

You’ll also gain some unique actions which are only accessible on a crafting class which has a Soul Crystal. These actions all cost 0 CP, so they’re? very useful when crafting?? more difficult recipes:

Action What it does
Careful Observation Do nothing for one step, preserving the status of any actions currently in effect
Heart and Soul Allows the execution of Precise Touch, Intensive Synthesis, or Tricks of the Trade
Quick Innovation Grants Innovation for one turn

Are there any specialist recipes?

Specialist recipes are shown in the Crafting Log in Final Fantasy XIV
Screenshot by Destructoid

With each new round of Master Recipes, new Specialist Recipes are added. To craft these, the required class wil???l need to have a Soul Crystal attached, and you’ll also need to unlock the specific Master Recipe books.

As of patch 7.05, there are?? four specialist recipes:

Item Specialism required Master recipes book Recipe
Electrope Barding Armorer Master Armorer X 1 Resilient Armor
2 Softsilver Ingots

There are a lot of easter eggs in Final Fantasy XIV, the most b??eloved of wh??ich involve NPCs showing up in unexpected places. As we head into spooky season, players are just starting to rediscover a seasonally appropriate example of this.

Edda Pureheart, the NPC we’re introduced to during the main story and who later makes an appearance in Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard) and Palace of the Dead is, and I’m sorry to break it to you if you’re thus far unaware, dead. However, this ??doesn’t prevent her from making an appearance every now and then.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnR01wRDDl8

If you’re lucky, it’s possible to come across Edda’s ghost in any of the three starting city states (Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah). And I do mean very lucky, because she has a less than 1% chance to spawn in her ghostly form. She’ll stick around for a few seconds, then disappear as thoug??h she was never there. ??;

Now here comes possibly the worst part: she will only show up at 2 a.m. in one of the possible locations, and only on a rainy night. It’s fair to say that the odds are stacked against you when it comes to waiting for this encounter, but if you’ve ever tried to catch any of the particularly rare fish in FFXIV, then you should be used to this kind of hellish probability?.

Edda during Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard)
Screenshot by Destructoid

She’ll only appear if you’ve finished Tam-Tara Deepc??roft (Hard), but that’s where the certainty ends. There are conflicting tales as to when she stops appearing, with some people saying she will stop showing up after you complete level 50 of Palace of the Dead, and others saying that she will continue showing up regardless of whether you’ve completed Palace of the Dead or not.

The ghost made its first appearance alongside the addition of Tam-T?ara Deepcroft (Hard) way back in patch 2.3, but it’s definitely an easy one to miss or simply not know about. It’s understandable that a new wave of players are beginning to discover her existence, and it warms my heart that people are still talking about Edda so long after her fate was sealed.

The team behind Final Fantasy XIV is touring the world at the moment, making appearances at conventions in countries as far apart as Japan, Germany, and the US. On September 28, FFXIV will once again ?make an appearance at ??Tokyo Game Show.

At TGS 2024, FFXIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida will present the first Live Letter from the Producer since Dawntrail??’s release, and we’ll get some sneak peeks of what??’s to come from Patch 7.1.

The Live Letter will broadcast live exclusively on the Square Enix YouTube channel on September 28 at 10:50 p.m. PDT. For those on?? the East Coast, the stream airs on September 29 at 1:50 a.m. EDT. Unfor??tunately, there won’t be any English translation provided during the Live Letter, but presentation slides will be in both Japanese and English.

We already know, at least loosely, what we may be expecting from FFXIV 7.1. At previous conventions, and at the Chinese leg of Fan Festival, Naoki Yoshida discussed both Shade’s Triangle (the new large-scale battle content similar to Eureka and The Bozjan Southern Front) and Cosmic Exploration (content for crafters and g??atherers, si?milar to Ishgardian Restoration) during panels and speeches. However, little information about either of these things has thus far been revealed outside of images and vague descriptions.

Cosmic Exploration artwork as shown at the China Fan Festival

Shade’s Triangle and Cosmic Exploration are just two pieces of content on a ??long list of content that players know is on the way, but are unsure of the ex?act time frame for their additions:

  • More Arcadion raids
  • Futures Rewritten, Dawntrail’s first Ultimate Raid
  • Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures
  • Further MSQ and progress with the story of Dawntrail

These a??re just a few things that players are itching to hear more about during the first of the 7.1 Live Letters. Whatever is revealed, one thing that I'm really hoping for is a release date so I can carve out some time to play all the new content coming o??ur way.

Between October 3 and 13, Melbourne International Games Week will be taking place. As part of the festivities, Naoki Yoshida will be sitting down with Stephanie "Hex" Bendixsen to discuss the development of Final Fantasy XIV.

//twitter.com/FF_XIV_EN/status/1829444024844865900

Sadly, the event has a maximum capacity of only 1,000 in person, but if you want to be involved and watch live, the event will be streamed live on the FFXIV Twitch channel.

Of course with ??the event taking place in Australia, the time-zone difference will mean that you may have to watch at a strange time, depending on where you are in the world. The steam will be live at 1 a.m. PT / 4 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. BST on October 8.

For those who are lucky enough to attend in person, there w?ill be a free commemorative poster available as a souvenir of the eve?nt, featuring an illustration of every class:

If you’ve ever wanted a sneak peek at what goes on behind-the-scenes in terms of the ongoing development of FFXIV, this discussion is well worth tuning into. Yoshida will b?e talking about everything from his creative process, to what he’s learned over his 30 year career in development, to the futures of MMORPGs as a whole.

It will be interesting to see whether Yoshida comments on the discourse surrounding Dawntrail, and whether he provides any hints as to the future direction of FFXIV. The end of Dawntrail left the story open to so many possible paths of development, so I’m hoping to hear some tidbits of information about where the story may be headed, either from this discussion or during PAX West.

It’s no secret that Final Fantasy XIV players love getting their hands on pretty hardware that showcases their love for the game, and now HYTE has teamed up with FFXIV to give away ano??ther customize?d piece that's, as always, limited by RNG.

The custom hardware in this case is a very sleek-looking PC case, complete with Viper-themed full body illustrations on at least two of its transparent sides. It's complete with a Job icon and Dawntrail logo on the front. I can imagine this would look pretty impr??essive with some RGB LEDs?? backlighting the images.

If you’re interested in entering the giveaway for the custom Y40 case, you’ll need to be a resident of either the USA or Canada, and there is a lengthy list of different things you can do to earn entrie?s into the draw. In total, there are 11 ways to enter, providing you w??ith 22 entries total.

Each task, when completed, earns you two entries into the prize draw. The?y include the usual suspects, like?? following the brand on Twitter or other social media, or liking and sharing posts. However, there is one interesting task that caught my attention.

If you’re heading to PAX West, make sure t?o head to HYT??E’s Display. Somewhere on their signage, according to the promotional site for the giveaway, there will be a secret code which can then be input to get two more entries.

This isn’t the first FFXIV-themed gaming hardware we’ve seen in recent times, with Elsa Japan having released a couple of stunning limited edition cases back in January. In March, Xbox teamed up with FFXIV for a Sweepstakes to win an Aetheryte Xbox, which was a display piece but came with a fu??lly functioning Xbox Series X and other goodies.

Then there’s the Secret Lab chair which was released back in June and came complete with interchangeable, magnetic job icons. At this point, you could probably create a pretty impressive, fully FFXIV-themed office s?et-up if you really wanted to and if you get lucky in some giveaways.

Servers for Final Fantasy XIV are constantly shifting and changing status, and those updated labels bring perks or difficulties to players on? those servers. After the August 27 maintenance, Data Centers across North America, Europe, and Japan were tweaked, with some shedding or adding the dreaded Congested status.

With the Dawntrail rush calming down, FFXIV Worlds are undergoing their usual dance to manage player populations across all Data Centers. If you've been hoping to?? join frien??ds on another server or are just eager to create a new character elsewhere, now is the time to double-check those Server designation changes.

FFXIV World Status designations, from Congested to Preferred

Within every Data Center, individual worlds accept?, encourage, or bar new character creation entirely. For those who are unsure what all of the statuses mean, here’s a quick rundown:

Congested: Worlds with an? extremely ?high population. No new characters can be created on or transferred to these Worlds.

Standard: Worlds with a mana??geable number of players who call it home. New characters ?can (usually) be made on these Worlds, but don’t receive any perks for doing so. Character creation occasionally toggles on and off, but you should always be able to transfer.

New: A newly added Wor??ld where it is highly recommended players create new characters. Newly created or transferred characters will receive special bonuses, like EXP boosts.

Preferred: Already esta?blished worlds with a low population where new characters can freely be created and will receive the same perks as thos?e on a new world.

Changes on North American Data Centers

North American Data Centers in Final Fantasy XIV

For those playing on North American Data Centers, a few changes were made to World statuses during the ??August 27 maintenance. No changes were made to Aether, as all worlds on the Data? Center are still considered congested.

On the Primal Data Center, a North Ameri?can hub, the following Worlds are now labeled as Standard:

  • Behemoth
  • Excalibur
  • Leviathan
  • Ultros

On the Crystal Data Center, a North American hub?, the ??following Worlds are also Standard:

  • Balmung
  • Brynhildr
  • Coeurl
  • Diabolos

There are no Preferred Worlds in North America, though ??Dynamis is home to mostly those with the same perks labeled as New.

The following Worlds are now also cons?idered congested:

  • Exodus
  • Famfrit
  • Goblin
  • Hyperion
  • Lamia
  • Malboro
  • Mateus
  • Zalera

Changes on European Data Centers

European Data Centers in Final Fantasy XIV

There are no Worlds on European Data Centers marked as congested in the update, but changes still occurred. Most of the shift impacts player balance on FFXIV's L?ight Data Center, b??ut anyone looking to transfer a character should have no issue on any World for now, at least.

On Europe's Light Data Center, Standard Worlds now include:

  • Alpha
  • Odin
  • Phoenix
  • Raiden
  • Shiva

Moogle and Phantom are the only Worlds on the Chaos Data Center with the Standard Status. However, also on the Chaos Data Center in Europe, Louisoix and Spriggan are now Preferred Worlds, along with Light's Twintania.

One notable item is the Fan-tastic Cheer Set of emotes, which is currently on sale for $3.50 USD, but the individual Cheer emotes are not included in the sale and will cost you $2.00 each. Previous event rewards, such as the Reborn Phoenix mount and Phoenix Riser Attire, are not included in the sale, but that does ??leave most other? cosmetic items available at a discount.

Phials of Fantasia and Dyes are also included in the ?sale, so it may be a good time to stock up on your ??favorites. You can even get hitched at a discount, with Eternal Bonding items included in the sale. On the other hand, Tales of Adventure (level or story skip items) are not included.

Obviously the more expensive an item is regularly, the bigger the savings, but if you’re wanting to make the most out?? of the sale, now is ?a good time to get the following items:

Item Normal price (USD) Sale price (USD) Saving (USD)
Fantasia (x5) $45.00  $31.50  $13.50
Lunar Whale $42.00  $29.40  $12.60
Garlond GL-IS $37.00  $25.90  $11.10
SDS Fenrir $29.99 $20.99 $9.00

The Rising 2024 has come to Final Fantasy XIV, and Limsa Lom??insa is the host?? city for this year's celebration of those we’ve lost, and the future we’ve yet to experience.

The reward for completing this year’s event quests is the Brushed-up Krile minion, along with some fond memories and another encounter with the most familiar face to any Final Fantasy XIV player.

This is the firs??t of two event quests to complete for the Brushed-up Krile minion, and you begin by talking to the Wandering Minst?rel in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X:11.3, Y:13.7).

He’ll send you off to talk to a Yellowjacket called Ayoyo, who has been put in charge of this year’s firework display in remembrance of those lost on the Carteneau Flats. You’ll find her in the Coral Tow??er (X:11.3, Y:6.1). Remember to take ??the stairs to your right as soon as you enter the building and go downstairs.

Then, you’ll need to speak with Ayoyo ?again at the Aetheryte Plaza (X:9.2, Y:10.9), before talking to four NPCs in Hawker’s Alley:

  • Swozblaet (X:8.4, Y:11.5)
  • Middle-aged Mariner (X:7.4, Y:11.9)
  • S’dhodjbi (X:6.3, Y:12.0)
  • Misty-eyed Skygazer (X:7.1, Y:12.6)

Once you’ve spoken to all of them, head towards the location where Ocean Fishing sets sail and wait at the destination (X:3.5, Y:11.9). A cutscene will play, then you’ll need to head back to the A??ftcastle to talk to the Wanderin?g Minstrel again to complete this first quest.

Speak to Ayoyo to start the next quest, then head back to the Coral Tower and talk to the Wandering Minstrel outside (??X:11.2, Y:7.1). After the cutscene, talk to Ayoyo again before heading off to the Anchor Yard (X:7.7, ??Y: 14.9)  to parley with the pirates.

All that’s left to do is talk to Ayoyo, then the Wandering Minstrel. They’re both very close by in the Anchor Yard, and th?en you’ll enter into the final cutscene of this year’s event to get your one-on-one encounter with Yoshi P and your Brushed-up Krile minion.

Once you’ve finished this quest, ?make sure to interact with the destination marked “The Anchor Yardto get some encounters with familiar faces from the past.

Final Fantasy XIV has extensive amounts of lore, and none is more potentially confusing than the stories behind the Umbral Calamities. These Calamities have changed the world, brought worlds colliding together, and left legacies i??n their wake.

There have thus far been eight Umbral Calamities, most of which seem to center around a particular element. Some ??are definitely more well known than others, but all of them should be re??membered.

The First Umbral Calamity

The First Umbral Calamity is what marked the beginning of what we now know as The Source. It’s also known as the Calamity of Wind, and much of what we know about it comes from the Moogles. In the tale of Good King Moogle Mog XII, we learn about a time when the Moogles filled the skies before it became the battleground of a war b??et??ween the gods.

The Second Umbral Calamity

I imagine the Second Umbral Calamity to have resulted in a world much like Heritage Found in Final Fantasy XIV

The Second Umbral Calamity was caused by kingdoms on The Source battling over territories. Also known as the Cal?amity of Lightning, this one was mostly caused by mankind's own greed, but that didn’t make it any less devastating.

After the wars between kingdoms destroyed the nature of the land around them, volcanoes began to erupt, causing long-lasting darkness to engulf the world. In this darkness, a huge lightning storm began and lasted for a year and a day, sending the people into underground caver??ns in search of safety. While down there, they began pr??aying for salvation and these prayers are said to be the first form of magical incantations.

The Third Umbral Calamity

Also known as the Calamity of Fire, the Thir??d Umbral Calamity was a result of a massive shift to religion after the discovery of magic and the downfall of many of the world's kingdoms. Corrupt and powerful, the Churches led the people into holy wars, witch hunts, and eventu??al genocide.

Tired of the wills of man, the gods are said to have punished the people. The sun became enlarged, and the earth became scorched and arid, leading people into famine. This Umbral Calamity is thought to be why Thanalan is now a desert, with discovered fossils leading many to?? believe that ??it was once lush and filled with greenery.

The Fourth Umbral Calamity

As we reach the Fourth Umbral Calamity, the stories may start to be??come more familiar. Also known as the Calamity of Earth, the Fourth Calamity occurred when Amon, then a scientist, attempted to revitalize his nation by bringing the first Allagan Emperor, Xande, back to life.

Forging a pact with the Cloud of Dar?kness to open a portal to The Void, Xande imprisoned the primal Bahamut within an artificial satellite which became known as Dalamud. The plan was to funnel Bahamut’s Aether into the Crystal Tower, but the ground? below it collapsed under the force. This, in turn, led to massive earthquakes and even the crumbling of mountains.

The Crystal Tower was swallowed by the earth beneath it, encasing?? Xande inside.

The Fifth Umbral Calamity

The Key used by the Lalafell to escape the Fifth Umbral Calamity in Final Fantasy XIV

The Fiffth Umbral Calamity is perhaps the most mysterious of?? all the Calamities. Little is known about what caused it. Otherwise known as the Calamity?? of Ice, the Fifth Calamity began with the Age of Endless Frost.

Eventually, this Endless Frost froze over the seas and Mi’qote tribes began to migrate en masse. The ?Lalafells who resided on Aloalo Island used the artifact we now know as the Key to escape into an unknown reflection, becoming known as the Milalla.

The Sixth Umbral Calamity

Bri??nging an end to the War of the Magi, which had been ongoing for more than 250 years, the Sixth Umbral Calamity is also known as the Calamity of Water. A devastating flood, thought to be caused by the overuse of the land’s aether, swept over Eorzea and destroyed both the cities of Nym and Mhach.

While the people of these cities fled to higher ground, magi from both Amdapor and Mhach worked together to find a new type of magic which would not drai?n aether from the world, giving birth to Red Magic. This seemed to quell the destruction, bringing the Sixth Umbral Calamity to its end.

The Seventh Umbral Calamity is perhaps the most well known to anyone who plays Final Fantasy XIV, as it was the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn.

Due to the fact th?at the previous Calamities had corresponding elements, the people of The Source thought that the worst was behind them. But then the Garleans, hungry for conquest, soug??ht to use Dalamud to cause massive destruction in Eorzea.

In their attempts to gain territory, they dragged Dalamud out of the sky, not knowing that it was a??ctually a Satellite encasing Bahamut. As Dalamud neared the surface, Bahamut erupted from his imp?risonment and caused massive devastation, particularly on the Carteneau Flats.

Louisoix Leveilleur, grandfather to both Alisaie and Alphinaud, worked together with the Circle of Knowing in an attempt to protect what was left of Eorzea and its people. As they prayed to the symbols of the Twelve, Louisoix transformed into the Phoenix, spearing through Bahamuts chest. Dying, Bahamut dr??agged Louisoix down into the earth with him and tempered him to his ??will.

The Circle of Knowing survived, and went on to become the Scions of the? Seventh Dawn.

The Eighth Umbral Calamity

Image via Square Enix

The Eighth Umbral Calamity happened only in the alternative timeline during the early Sev??enth Astr?al Era (after the Sixth Umbral Calamity). Garlean forces unleashed a deadly gas called Black Rose against the people or Eorzea. This gas had the correct aspect to feed from the light-aspected aether of The First, which was swept into The Source and Rejoined.

The Eighth Umbral Calamity not only destroyed everything in Eorzea, but also the Garlean Empire as well. Survivors, including Cid Garlond, went on to figure out a method of returning to The Fir?st before it was rejoin??ed. This research was eventually passed down, allowing for the re-awakening of G’raha Tia in the Crystal Tower 200 years after the Calamity.

Unfortunately, due to time flowing differently on The First, G’raha arrived 100 years ahead of schedule and had to hide behind th?e identity of the Crystal ??Exarch, awaiting the right time for the Warrior of Light to arrive in The First and quell the effects of Black Rose.

In the roster of annual events in Final Fantasy XIV, few come?? with such heartwarming stories as The Rising. Every year in August, director and producer Naoki Yoshida appears as an in-game character to express his thanks for continue??d support, along with a few inspirational words of encouragement.

The Rising celebrates the anniversary of FFXIV's rebirth as A Realm Reborn, after the end of Version 1.0. It’s a chance to not only share in the celebration of what will this year be the 11th anniversary of A Realm Reborn, but also to remember those who perished during the Seventh Umbral Calamity despite the efforts of Louisoix on the Carteneau ??Flats.

In 2024, FFXIV's The Rising event runs from August 27 at 3 a.m. EST until September 11 at 11 p.m. EST, and you’ll be able to begin the event quest by talking to the Wandering Minstrel in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks. There aren't many clues on the Lodestone yet about the contents of this year’s event quests, but the tagline is “Flowers bloom o??ver the o?cean, breathing the perfume of the past

Regardless of what the event entails, as always, there are some rewards up for grabs if you take part. This year, you’ll get the Brushed-up Krile minion for particip??ating, which is utterly adorable and a rare glimpse of Krile without her almost surgically attached hood and her newly obtained Pictomancer weapon.

There’s also a secondary housing item, likely purchased for Gil from the event vendor. The Rising Table Lamp is a slightly bizarre choice and doesn’t quite scream ‘The Risingto me, but it probably won’t be too expensive and I’m sure my specified event items Retainer won’t mind holding on to it for me until?? I can find a use for it.
